WILLIAM BAYARD HEROY, Director of the Institute since 1935 and Vice-President for the past year, has been active in both geological and engineering circles of the petroleum industry for many years. "Bill," as he is generally called, was born in New York City in 1883, and graduated from the department of geology at Syracuse University in 1909 with a Ph.B. degree. Immediately he joined the U. S. Geological Survey, where he established an enviable record during the next eleven years. While with the Survey he acted variously as chairman, chief, and advisory engineer for a variety of Governmental bodies, many concerned with power.

INTRODUCTION In this gapes, the author will describes to development of Yubari New coal mine. The construction set about since October 1970, and commenced from June 1975 in winning. The problems for development are next four: 1) There were no outcrop of the coal bearing strata, but the development was instituted against the deep coal seam occurrence at 800 m below the surface. 2) In order to the coal seams occured the deep level from the surface, threr had very difficult problems, i.e. temperature, earth pressure, methane etc. The countermeasure to solved them, were foundation of the development. 3) The construction was afflict with the inundation in high pressure, due to cement grouting and excavating alternately, overcame the difficulties. 4) The construction was finished by the encourage of national investment, in spite of the enterprise was weaken constitution from the energy revolution since 1960's. Ishikari coal field is situated the west side of the Hidaka mountains, where runs north to south at center of Hokkaido, northern district of Japan. It's width is 40km in east and west, and length is 110km in north and south.

A new Military, Engineering School has been established at Camp A. A. Humphreys, Virginia. This camp was used throughout the summer and fall of 1918 for the Engineering Officers Training School in preparing engineer officers for the United States Army. The camp and the courses prescribed were laid out on an ambitious scheme, which since the armistice has been signed, have been directed wholly, toward the permanent establishment of an Engineering Training School for Officers of the regular Army. Those young officers who were graduated from Nest Point at the end of a two-year course, necessitated by the emergency, have been ordered to Camp Humphreys to complete their engineering education.

The determination of manganese by precipitation with potassium chlorate from a solution in concentrated nitric acid, filtration through asbestos, and solution in a reducing agent whose excess is estimated, is open to the objections that the filtration and subsequent solution of the binoxide are apt to be very slow, and that the asbestos may (according to Troilius), unless perfectly purified, affect the titration. In the following modification, filtration is avoided. I give the method as I use it for Bessemer steel. In an 8-ounce Griffen beaker dissolve 1 gramme drillings in 15 c.c. nitric acid (1.2 sp. gr.). Evaporate to 5 c.c.; add 20 c.c. concentrated nitric acid and precipitate with chlorate as usual, avoiding a large excess; then add about 60 c.c. warm water, and 10 c.c. of the oxalic solution; stir until of a clear light yellow color, and titrate with permanganate while the solution is at about 80' C. The binoxide should dissolve immediately when the oxalate isadded. The titration is rapid, and the end-reaction, though transient, easily caught after a little practice. The standard solutions used are: 15 grammes crystallized ammonium oxalate to a liter, and 1.6 grarnmes potassium permanganate to a liter. For standardizing the permanganate, to 10 c.c. of the oxalic solution is added 50 c.c. of hot water, and a solution of 1 gratnme of steel in concentrated nitric acid, from which the manganese has been removed by potassium chlorate and filtration through asbestos. In a marked departure from conventional practice, the Power Plate process combines the two unit operations of leaching and electrowinning into a single continuous step for direct recovery of copper from sulfide concentrates, cement copper, copper scrap, and copper oxide slurries. Considering how environmental controls are pre- venting development of smelters for additional capacity or new construction, the Power Plate process provides a welcome pollution-free alternative to the smelting-electrorefining routes. And its low capital investment and low operating costs also recommend it to copper producers who are now using or investigating various hydrometallurgical methods.

The Bingham Canyon Mine, located 48 km (30 mi) southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, is operated by Kennecott Copper Corporation's Utah Copper Division. This operation is the world's largest open-pit copper mine and produces 96 000 tons (106,000 st) ore and 327 000 tons (360,000 st) waste each day. This material is loaded by large electric shovels and transported by both truck and rail haulage. To meet the requirements of the Clean Air Act of 1970 (as amended), new facilities for the control of smelter emissions were required and are now nearing the final stages of construction. The facility will be capable of treating all the output from the mine, some 2,530 tons (2,789 st) per day of combined concentrate and precipitate. Costing $280 million and necessitating the replacement of reverberatory furnaces with continuous smelting vessels, the plant, with its massive and complex gas handling and acid-making facility, is required to remain on-stream with the minimum of pollution control equipment outages to conform with Federal Regulation 52.2325. As part of this giant effort, the smelter planning team and supervisory staff considered that new, well organized, highly flexible, readily available maintenance information was essential to assist the maintenance personnel in the performance of their duties.

Considerable progress has been made during the past year throughout the Russian petroleum industry. Perhaps the most remarkable achievement is the execution of the programs set out by the Central Planning Bureau of the Department of Commerce. These programs have been increased twice during the past operating year, necessitating drilling the richest reserves, instead of developing gradually as originally planned. The fulfillment of the set-out programs during the past few years makes therefore the present five-year plan of considerable importance to the international oil statisticians in approximating actual supply conditions up till 1933. The production of all Russian fields increased by 14,200,000 bbl. as compared with the 1927-1928 operating year, while the next year's program anticipates a further increase of 15,700,000 barrels. It appears therefore that production for 1932-33 will total 187,000,000 bbl., or approximately double that of the operating year just closed. It is also evident that the old fields are counted upon to produce only about 67 per cent. of the total, the new fields, not yet discovered, to furnish the balance of 33 per cent. (New York meeting, February, 1913.) IN the study of ore deposits water plays a very prominent part. The small group of igneous ores involve it least, but in all the rest it is an invariable feature. The ground-water, therefore, is perhaps as appropriate a subject for discussion before a session of the American Institute of Mining Engineers as any topic which might be selected. The theme is if anything the more appropriate, because two very important contributions to it have already appeared in the Transactions. The great essay in 1893 of Franz Posepny,1 systematized and classified the subject, and was doubtless not without its influence in leading to the presentation in 1900, by C. R. Van Hise, of an important contribution entitled Some Principles Controlling the Deposition of Ores.2 We all recall the discussions of 10 or 12 years ago, and the interest in these themes which then prevailed in the Institute. They are collectively accessible in the separate edition wisely assembled by Dr. Raymond, and now to be supplemented by the Emmons Volume. Views have been progressing in the past decade or more, and new evidence has been brought to light. A general summary and concise statement may, therefore, not be without interest.

A SHORT and accurate method for the estimation of manganese in iron and steel is of great advantage to Bessemer works, and I think it may be of interest to some of the members of the Institute to give in detail the process in use in the laboratory of the Edgar Thomson steel works. The process is based on the reaction first described by Beilstein and Jawein.* The steel, spiegel, or iron is dissolved in strong nitric acid, sp. gr. 1.4. Evaporation to dryness is not necessary, unless the amount of silicon is large, as in the case of certain pig irons. Then, as a clogging of the filter in the subsequent filtra¬tion is apt to follow, dissolve first in a dish in hydrochloric acid, quickly evaporate to dryness, redissolve in the strong nitric acid, boil, and while boiling throw in crystals of chlorate of potash from time to time. In both production and refining operations of the oil industry many processes are controlled by the gas-liquid phase relationships of the hydrocarbon mixtures of interest. The quantitative behavior of fractionating or distillation columns and stills depends on the changes in the equilibrium distributions of the hydrocarbon components between the gas and liquid phases as the pressure or temperature conditions may vary along the length of the column or as the gross operating parameters and compositions are varied. In oil producing operations the nature and amount of gas phase developed within an underground reservoir as it is being depleted and its pressure declines also involve the basic equilibrium gas-liquid phase interactions. The influence of surface conditions of temperature and pressure and various separation procedures on the nature and amount of stock tank oil and natural gas recovered from a given well stream is likewise determined by the same basic phase equilibrium characteristics of the hydrocarbon systems. Such equilibrium separation of the gas and liquid phases in a well stream is of importance both in establishing optimum separator conditions for obtaining maximum stock tank oil yields and in the general problem of crude stabilization. The phenomena involved in these problems and their quantitative aspects can, of course, be established in each individual instance by appropriate laboratory experimentation. It has been found, however, that by associating with the individual hydrocarbon components functional characteristics de- scribing their individual gas - liquid phase equilibrium behavior, the phase properties of the composite mixtures can be predicted by mathematical computation. These characteristics have been termed "equilibrium constants", or "equilibrium ratios"," and are defined by the general equation: where K, is the equilibrium ratio for the jth component, y, is the rnol fraction of that component in the gas phase, and xj is the corresponding mol fraction in the coexisting liquid phase. Considering the Kj as representing available and measurable properties of the individual components of a mixture, and as defined by Eq. (l), it is readily shown that in a coexisting gas-liquid system the rnol fraction concentrations of the individual components in the gas phase, y,, and those in the liquid phase, x,, are given by the expressions: where the nj are the corresponding rnol fraction concentrations in the composite system, and ng is the mol fraction of the whole which is in the gas phase. The basic unknown in Eq. (2) is n,: which gives the gross separation between the gas and liquid phases. This may be determined in principle by imposing the requirement that the sums of the mol fractions in both the gas and liquid phases are unity, i.e. by the equations: The solution of the equivalent Eqs. (3) lying between 0 and 1, when inserted into Eqs. (2), provides a complete description of the compositions of the coexisting gas and liquid phases. While the Eqs. There are four main requirements to be considered in selecting a wire rope that will provide the best service. A proper choice is made by correctly estimating the relative importance of each of these requirements and choosing a rope with qualities that will best enable it to withstand the combination of destructive forces expected under continued service. A Good Rope Choice Matches Strength with Stress A wire rope should be (1) strong enough to sup- port the maximum load anticipated with a proper safety factor, (2) able to withstand bending and to resist bending fatigue without failure of the wires, (3) able to withstand surface abuse such as abrasion, pounding, and wire scrubbing, and (4) able to take abuse such as crushing and distortion.

As predicted a year ago, owing to the discovery in 1936 of crude oil on the west flank of the south end of Tuner Valley in the eastern foothills of Alberta, 50 miles southwest of Calgary, and the drilling activity that resulted, the production of crude oil in Canada during 1937 showed a very substantial increase over the previous year. The production from other parts of Canada is relatively small and shows slight variations only from year to year. The production of crude oil in Canada and the production in Alberta, the main producing Province, is shown in Tables 1 and 2.

The recently completed modifications and additions to Reserve Mining Company's taconite concentrating process incorporate a totally new control system. Design of the new control scheme is centered on reliability, versatility, centralization, and optimization. The design objectives were achieved through a distributed control system based on a network of independent field located microprocessor based control system connected to a central control room. Operation of each micro-processors can be interrogated and modified from the central control room by the operator or by either of two computer systems. The two computer systems handle logging, alarming, specialized sequenced controls, and complex process optimization routines.

This paper will discuss an application of multivariate discriminant analysis to aid in predicting mineral potential from regional geological data and information on mineral deposits, with particular emphasis on the use of the logistic discriminant function. Logistic discriminant analysis is a generalization of standard discriminant analysis in that the discriminant analysis becomes applicable under a much wider class of distributions. As a practical example, the standard multiple discriminant analysis and the logistic discriminant analysis are applied to data from the Bathurst area in the Appalachian region of Canada and the results are compared with one another.
