Discussion of the paper of R. H. RICHARDS and BOYD DUDLEY, JR., presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 97, January, 191.5, pp. 67 to 72. R. H. RICHARDS, Boston, Mass.-I believe that the manner of working for efficiency in almost all lines is to study the conditions of highest efficiency, and then to measure what is being clone. We can then see how near we have approached the highest efficiency. Spigots in practice often use many times the water theoretically needed. There are places where that is necessary for safety reasons. There are, however, places where it is unnecessary, and in these places it seems to me that this work of Mr. Dudley's will be a great help to the mill man to arrive at the greatest economy of water and highest efficiency. INTRODUCTION The Friedensville mine is situated in Upper Saucon Township, Le- high County, Pennsylvania, in the southern central part of the Allentown quadrangle of the United States Geological Survey, approximately 5 miles southeast of the City of Allentown and 4 miles south of the City of Bethlehem. Zinc was first discovered in the Friedensville area early in the 19th century and several mines were operating during the latter part of the century. Zinc oxide was produced in 1853 and zinc metal in 1859. All mining in the area ceased in 1893 chiefly because of an unfavorable economic situation caused by a severe ground water problem and competition from the higher grade ores in New Jersey. Property acquisition by the New Jersey Zinc Company began in 1899 and periodic exploratory drilling was carried on until 1940 when sufficient reserves were proved for development of a mine. Shaft sinking was undertaken in 1947 and, due to severe hydrologic conditions, was not completed until 1952. Production began in 1958 and today the mine is producing about 64,000 tons of zinc concentrate per annum. The concentrates are trucked to the Company's smelter at Palmerton, Pennsylvania, approximately 30 miles north of Friedensville. The mine also produces from its mill tailings industrial and agricultural grades of limestone for commercial markets.

A Technique for the Preparation of Thin Films of Two-Phase Alloys Suitable for Use in Transmission Electron Microscopy In order to obtain foil sufficiently thin to permit transmission electron microscopy of two-phase alloys, particularly alloys in which the second phase is present as a very finely dispersed second phase, a technique has been developed to permit the thinning of these materials without either the large degree of pitting present in the electrochemical or chemical thinning process or the slicing of the second phase particles accompanying the mi-crotoming process. The metal or alloy to be thinned is first ground to initial sheet thickness of approximately 0.002 in. by hand grinding on 4/0 emery paper. This starting sheet of material is then reduced in cross section by an air-abrasion technique using an S. S. White dental abrasive unit. This unit consists of a supply of compressed CO, which provides a stream of high velocity gas impinging on the metal surface. Incorporated in the machine is a hopper-type of device in which fine abrasive particles of alumina are introduced into this high velocity gas stream. The abrasive particles are irregular in shape, approximately 30 across. If any particles are introduced into the sample during thinning, they should be readily observable. Impingement of this gas abrasive mixture on the metal surface causes rapid removal of the metal in a rather uniform manner. The rates of metal removal may be adjusted by both regulating the gas pressure and amount of abrasive material introduced into the gas stream. By moving the gas stream abrasive mixture slowly about the specimen or sheet surface, a large area of the sheet may be uniformly reduced to a thickness which is then suitable for use in transmission electron microscopy. Attendant with this metal removal is a result in cold working of the metal surface due to the impingement of the abrasive particles. The resultant foils, therefore, if made from materials which are desirable to view in the annealed condition, have to be subsequently heat treated. If the alloy from which these foils have been made has been initially heavily worked or deformed during manufacture, then no subsequent heat treatment is, necessary as in the case of the SAP-type alloys. Following this initial abrasive thinning technique, the material is then given a final electropolish which is just sufficient to remove any oxide which has formed on the metal surface during the abrasion technique. Care has to be exercised in this technique to make sure that none of the attendant problems associated with the chemical or electrochemical removal process are encountered. An electrolyte solution which has been found suitable for aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP materials is one containing 78 ml of perchloric acid, 120 ml of distilled water, 700 ml of ethanol, and 100 ml of butylcellosolve. The current density used is 1 amp per sq cm and a polishing time of 3 sec on each side of the foil is used. Extreme care must be used in choosing the current density and time to ensure that just the oxide film on the specimen is removed. Times or current density which are greater than this will lead to perforation of the film due to the removal of the A1,0, particles or a complete loss of the film due to complete solution of the matrix. Once the oxide film is removed the specimens must be kept in alcohol until placed in the microscope to prevent any further oxidation. Fig. 1 shows -an electron micrograph at X28,000 of a thin foil of an aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-type alloy prepared using this technique. The alloy consists of a matrix of commercial purity aluminum containing a very finely dispersed second phase of aluminum oxide flakes. In the electron micrograph, the dark patches are the aluminum oxide particles. The lighter portions of the micrograph are the aluminum matrix. Within the aluminum matrix, the dislocation structure of the alloy is clearly visible. This structure consists of intersecting twin boundaries and single dislocations. No abrasive particles were observed in the samples. In addition, thin films of commercial purity aluminum were prepared using this method and observed in the electron microscope. Here also, there was no evidence of abrasive particles introduced in the samples. The technique presented provides a satisfactory method for the production of thin films of aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-type alloys for use in transmission electron microscopy where none of the usual thinning techniques appears to be satisfactory.

It was found that despite the similarity of chemical analyses of different titanium carbides used as base materials for cermets, the physical properties, especially transverse-rupture strengths, of test bars were different. Hence this metallographic study attempts to link physical properties to micro-structures. It is shown that microstructure, grain shape, and grain growth are functions of three interrelated factors: 1—powder production procedure, 2—surface conditioning of the particles, and 3—impurities either contained in the original powder or acquired during ball milling. An explanation is offered for the "coring effect," long observed, but heretofore of unknown origin. The explanation is based on assumption of an oxide film and on chemical analyses which substantiate these findings. TITANIUM carbide has become in recent years a material of great interest in the high temperature field. Consequently, many manufacturers in the United States and Europe are producing titanium carbide for cermet applications as well as for additions to the well known tungsten carbide tools. All present commercial processes of titanium carbide production utilize the chemical reaction of titanium dioxide and carbon to form as nearly as possible stoichiometric Tic. This reaction is carried out in three ways: 1—in a menstruum of molten metal,' 2—in the solid state, either in a protective atmosphere2 or in vacuum;" or 3—in an are-melting operation. In spite of the fact that the pure carbides obtained in these operations are almost identical chemically, the physical properties vary considerably when they are combined with a binder (Ni, Co) to form cermets. This fact led the authors to examine metal-lographically nickel-bonded titanium carbide in order to find the possible reasons for this behavior. Materials and Methods Five different titanium carbides were used in this investigation. They are identified in Table I. The first four materials were used in the as-received condition. Material E, received in lumps, was crushed to —100 mesh and carried through a flotation process in order to bring its graphite content in line with the other products. A Galagher flotation cell was used with pine oil as frothing agent. The chemical analyses of the investigated materials are given in Table 11. The binder used was carbonyl nickel of 9 to 14 microns particle size, supplied by A. D. Mackay. The materials were ball milled at a ball to charge ratio of 6:1 using procedures described under "Experiments and Results." All particle sizes mentioned are averages determined with a Fisher Sub-sieve Sizer. Test bars (lx0.40x0.16 in.) were prepared by 1—hot pressing to 85 to 95 pct of theoretical density at pressures between 1 and 1½ tsi and temperatures from 1600" to 1800°C, 2-—-cold presssing after 3 pct camphor had been added, or 3—wet pressing, both 2 and 3 at pressures between 5 and 10 tsi. All pressed bars were sintered in a vacuum of 105 to 10-6 mm Hg for 2 hr at 1350 °C. Transverse-rupture strengths were determined by breaking on a Baldwin Universal Testing Machine over a 9/16 in. span. Densities were measured by water displacement. The preparation of the specimens for micrographs was done according to Silverman and Doshna Luscz." All magnifications are at X1000. A sodium picrate electrolytic etch was used. Experiments and Results The influence of ball-milling procedure, ball-milling medium, pressing procedure, and sintering procedure on the microstructure of 80/20 — TiC/Ni were investigated. Ball Milling of Materials A, B, and C in a Steel Mill: Figs. 1 and 2 show microstructures of hot-pressed and vacuum-sintered test bars of materials A and B after the respective materials had been ball milled to 2.1 microns particle size in a steel mill and mixed with 20 pct Ni binder. Material A (Fig. 1) shows considerable grain growth. Also evident is a tendency of the carbide grains to coalesce. The density is 98 pct and the low transverse-rupture strength of 111,000 psi is probably caused by many large grains and an unfavorable packing factor. Almost all grains show a slight indication of "coring." Material B (Fig. 2), although showing grain growth, still has many small particles and a better distribution of binder and carbide due to the relative absence of the coalescing tendency. "Coring" can be observed in almost all grains. The high transverse-rupture strength of 179,000 psi and the density of 100 pct are believed to be due to the many small grains completely surrounded by the binder phase. There is also a preference to form spherical grains with material A, while most grains of material B preserve their angular shapes. Material C, of which no picture is given, stays between A and B in every respect. Rounding of some grains can be observed as well as coring, but the latter to a lesser degree than with material B. Its densification is good and the transverse-rupture strength obtained is 142,000 psi. During 1941, the total production of crude oil in New York state was 5,185,000 bbl. This represents a small increase over the average for the past five years. From 1921, when the annual production of the state amounted to only 988,000 bbl., there was a regular annual increase in production (excepting one or two years) until the 5,000,000-bbl. mark was reached in 1937, After more than 20 years of oil recovery by flooding methods, it was generally believed, until a few months ago, that the rate of production was nearly at its peak and within a few years the fields would experience a gradual decline as the thicker sands became exhausted and the thinner ones could be worked only at increasing costs. As a result of the present emergency, however, unusual efforts are being made, in spite of higher costs of operation, to increase the output of Pennsylvania grade oil, to which the New York product belongs. Since most of any increased production would be obtained by flooding, and since floods travel slowly, no large increase in production can be expected for some months to come. During the first year, 10 or 15 per cent increase could be obtained, but maximum production, an increase of perhaps 40 per cent, could not be expected until some time during the second or third year. In the Allegany fields, which account for two thirds of the state's oil production, 1246 wells, including water-intake wells, were drilled during the year; 390 more than in the preceding year and 590 more than in 1939. It is evident that much of the best oil territory has already been developed. As producers move toward edge properties and thinner sands, returns will be smaller, whereas costs remain the same or, under war conditions, become higher. It is estimated that at least 60 million barrels of oil is in sight and will be produced from the thicker sands by present recovery methods. In the thinner sands and edge properties, some 35 million additional barrels can be produced at a profit only if prices become higher. In view of the fact that there is little hope of finding new oil pools in New York, one of the future problems of the oil producer will be to obtain adequate returns for increased production costs. The year started with a posted price of $2.15 per barrel of crude. There were five successive price increases until the high of the year was reached at $2.98 on Aug. 14. Eight days later the Office of Price Administration directed that the price be reduced to the June level of $2.75 a barrel, which remained in effect to the end of the year. With rising costs of operation, it is feared that many of the smaller properties cannot continue production unless the Federal price cut is revoked. During the year, Allegany Refiners Inc., a local enterprise founded in 1933, with plant at Bolivar, western Allegany County, increased its refining capacity from 1000 to 1500 bbl. daily. At the same time equipment was added to make the plant a complete lubricating-oil refinery, including facilities for the refining of wax into the finished product. One of the chief difficulties with which the operator of a coal washing plant has been forced to contend is the handling of the very fine coal. First he has the problem of separating the fine coal from washery water. This is usually accomplished by the use of settling cones or Dorr thickeners: in either event the separated fine coal contains a high amount (40 to 80 pct) of water and, somewhat loosely, dependent upon the size of the coal particles present, may be known as sludge or slurry. His second problem is the satisfactory further dewatering of such separated sludge and/or slurry.

By a simple method of cutting out these names and addresses and pasting them directly over the corresponding names in the annual list of members, the record can be kept practically up to date, and the value of the list correspondingly increased. For this purpose the changes of address have been printed only on one side of the page. The names of new members, being in italics, are readily distinguished from the others, and can be pasted in approximate alphabetical order on the margins of the pages.

Investigations were conducted by the lndiana Geological Survey for some dry methods of bene-ficiating low-grade gypsum ore. Seventy-two batch and continuous flow tests were performed with a roller mill, rod mill, pebble mill, electronic color sorter, electrostatic separator, and an air separator. Approximately 650 size analyses and 550 chemical analyses were performed during the investigation. Batch samples were tested by the Survey, and most of the continuous flow tests were handled by com-mercial laboratories. INTRODUCTION Although many companies producing gypsum have been interested in dry beneficiation, very little information has been published in the past. One of the most comprehensive investigations was reported by the Canadian Department of Mines.5 Other reports of interest have been published by the Canadian Department of Mines,' the South Australian Department of Mines,2 and the U.S. Bureau of Mines.3 Some beneficiating practices, such as hand picking, selective mining, crushing and screening, milling, and air classifying, were already in use in the Canadian industry prior to MacPherson's investigations.5 MacPherson examined the effect of tabling, air separation, screening, flotation, electrostatic separation, calcining, washing, and various types of milling, in his efforts to eliminate dolomite, limestone, and small amounts of silica and clay from the gypsum ore. RAW MATERIAL Gypsum and anhydrite occur within the lower part of the St. Louis Limestone (Mississippian) in southwestern Indiana. Gypsum in single beds 10 or more ft thick occur at Shoals, Martin County; near Freedom, Owen County; near Bloomfield, Greene County; and in the Devonian strata of LaPorte County. Only the Shoals deposit has been exploited commercially. The western edge of the Shoals deposit is contaminated by a continuous bed of shale, about 1 1/2 to 2 ft thick, near the top of the evaporite and by thin continuous strata or irregular masses of carbonate rock. The low-grade material used in these investigations was obtained from the waste pile of the National Gypsum Co.'s plant at Shoals. The waste ore averaged about 67.4% gypsum and was contaminated by various amounts of shale, dolomite, and limestone. All the material had been previously crushed and screened to minus 1 1/4 to plus 3/8 in. X-ray analyses of powdered, sedimentated, gly-colated, and heat-treated samples of the shale showed that it was composed of slightly structurally disordered illite, Fe-rich chlorite, and very finegrained disseminated silt. The clays and silt were partly cemented with carbonate material. Light-gray argillaceous limestone and gray or brown porous dolomite made up most of the carbonate rock contamination. Crushing Characteristics: The rate unweathered gypsum, carbonate rock, and shale reduce in size was determined by crushing handpicked samples in a rod mill and screening at minus 100 mesh (.0059 in.). Fig. 1 graphically represents the data. These data indicate that carbonate rock should be relatively easy to separate from gypsum, but that shale should be difficult to separate from gypsum by differential crushing. Controlled Samples: Eight rod mill tests of hand-picked samples of mixed gypsum and shale and mixed gypsum and carbonate rock were made. Sample weight and crushing weight were standardized, but the scalping screen size was varied from 3 to 10 mesh (.265 to .0787 in.) in order to obtain the optimum purity and recovery. The data obtained from the tests (see Table I) illustrate that the relatively hard carbonate rock allows appreciable beneficiation (13.6 to 18%), but the low strength gypsum and shale allows only minimal separation (3.1 to 7.5%).* Semi control led Samples: During the investigation considerable slaking of the shale was noted when the ore was subjected to alternate wetting and drying. As demonstrated in laboratory tests, as much as 76% shale can be removed by two cycles of wetting and drying in a 48-hour period with subsequent screening at .265 in. Five ore samples, stockpiled and weathered, were screened, rod-mill crushed and rescreened at .157 or .187 in. with excellent results (Table 11).

W. C. Leslie (Edgar C. Bain Laboratory for Funda mental Research)—This investigation, with its com bination of high-purity metal, calorimetry, and metallography, will serve as a model for annealing studies for a long time to come. The evidence for a competition between recovery and recrystalliza-tion is particularly convincing. The demonstration of edge-nucleated recrystallization was so clear that it may obscure the necessity for other types of "nucleation" sites; otherwise, single crystals of aluminum could not be recrystallized after cold work. At least three types of sites have been found to operate in iron: 1) high-angle boundaries, probably in the same manner as in aluminum, 2) matrix sites, 3) inclusions or second-phase particles. In each instance, the cells developed during cold work and perfected during recovery are the "nucle for recrystallization. Observations by ourselves and others of the dislocation structure of cold-worked metals and of the structural changes that occur during annealing have led us to doubt the validity of the basic assumption of the Lucke-Detert theory, and of the modification developed by Gordon and Vandermeer, that during recrystallization of a metal containing foreign elements in solid solution a high-angle boundary is ad vancing into a cold-worked matrix having a random distribution of solute atoms. We contend that an es sential part of the cold-working and annealing of solid solution alloys is the trapping of solute atoms by the low-energy "wells" afforded by individual dislocations and by dislocation arrays. If cells are formed during cold work, the cell walls are stabilized by this concentration of solute atoms. Thus, solutes inhibit recrystallization not only by decreas-ing the rate of high-angle boundary migration, but also by preventing the formation of high-angle boundaries by subgrain growth or coalescence, i.e., solutes can inhibit both "nucleation" and growth. In addition to stabilizing the dislocation Structure, the solute-dislocation interactions may produce clusters of solute atoms which are not as readily assimilated into the recrystallized grains as are individual solute atoms. There is an additional complication. The dislocation structure formed upon cold working a dilute solid solution may not be the same as that formed during cold working of the pure solvent metal. The solute can either enhance or minimize the formation of cells during cold working. Both effects have been observed in binary alloys of iron. The annealing process is inextricably connected with the mechanisms of strain hardening and solid solution hardening. Although the correlation between experimental boundary migration rates and the predictions made from the theoretical equations are impressive, it should be mentioned that in at least four other instances (Pb-Ag and pb-Au,15, Fe-Mn,16, Fe-Mo)17 the agreement was rather poor. In brief, while it is probable that the migration of high-angle boundaries is held back by solutes in the manner described, this is only a partial explanation of the total effect of solutes upon recrystallization of cold-worked alloys. Paul Gordon and R. A. Vandermeer (author's reply)— The authors first wish to thank Dr. Leslie for his compliments of this work. It is perhaps worth pointing out that some of Dr. Leslie's remarks are directed toward subject matter covered in two earlier papers in our work.18,19 We agree with Dr. Leslie's main contention that the exact nature of the metal structure in the vicinity of a boundary should have an effect on the boundary migration. The theory of Lucke and Detert does not take such detail into account, nor does it account for orientation effects on the migration rates. We assume that since our data checks the theory so well, the effects of detailed structure are statistically averaged out by the polycrystalline techniques used just as are the effects of orientation factors.

The model which Birkimer has developed to explain the increase in fracture strength of brittle, rock-like materials with increasing rate of loading may have some applicability. It should be noted that since his analysis presupposes elastic behavior he could equally well express his result as an increase of stress to fracture with increasing strain rate, a fact which is well known. Certainly his experimental results do not contradict his strain rate to the one third power law. On the other hand, we do feel that the data are insufficient and inadequate to establish the relation- ship definitely. 'In metals, the whole fracture picture is greatly complicated by concomitant plastic flow and, in rocks, by the presence of macroscopic flaws and inhomogeneties. Both lead to uncertainties as to the state of stress during the fracture process. He quotes in support of his theory Rinehartfs results on rock in which the latter found that under impulsive loading by explosives, rocks appear to be many times stronger than under static loading. We suspect that the observed increase has little specific relevance to the theory which Birkimer puts forward. Rinehart's measurements were made by spalling rocks using a sawtooth shaped stress wave of known intensity and duration. The rise time of such a pulse is essentially zero, certainly less than 0.1 microseconds, so that it is not possible to apply Birkimerfs theory quantitatively. We favor attributing the increase in fracture strength to two factors. First, the action takes place very quickly in an exceedingly thin region so that statistically the probability is small of encountering one or more of the large flaws that contribute so significantly to the reduction of strength of most rocks under tension. It is also conceivable that the compressive wave that has just passed by the region of fracture has strengthened the rock by collapsing some of the larger flaws. Second, the state of stress obtaining at the time of fracture is not all that existing when the

The paper gives an account of the factors influencing the stability of coal mining tunnels and goes on to examine various bases of support and lining design of such tunnels in relation to geological and mining conditions. The different types of coal mining tunnels are compared and comments made regarding the factors influencing their choice and basic design features. Foremost amongst design considerations is the design method and special thought has been given to the validity of different formulae as related particularly to UK Carboniferous geological conditions. Emphasis is placed on the role of the stress field in relation to tunnel stability. Shape of mining tunnel has been investigated and conclusions drawn regarding the merits of different commonly excavated geometries from a stability point of view. Detailed design aspects pertaining to determination of tunnel lining strength and resulting stability are critically examined and current design methods are compared. Data from UK mining tunnels are included as the basis for comparison of these design methods.

Continuous seven- and nine teen -filament close-packed silver-steel filamentary composites mere tested in tension. For purposes of comparison, the tensile behavior of the composite was predicted from the measured properties of the individual com-ponents. It was assumed that the axial strain is the same in both components and that the contribution of each component to the composite flow stress is proportional to its volume fraction. Good agreetnent was obtained between the observed and predicted tensile behavior. However, the composite elongation at fracture was about twice that observed when the individual steel wires were tested alone. Composites in which the filaments were widely spaced failed by the consecutive fracture of the filaments. In composites with closely spaced filaments, a composite instability preceded frachcre. These effects are explained in terms of a lateral restraint to the necking of the filaments which develops in the deforming composite. TWO-COMPONENT or composite materials are increasingly being developed and used as structural materials. Of all the composite geometries used, the filamentary configuration has proved to be the most successful. Polymer-bonded fiber-glas, the most common of the filamentary composites, has been investigated most extensively to date. One explanation of the behavior of fiberglas1 suggests that the load transfer between the glass fibers and the polymer matrix occurs primarily through friction. Bond separation between the fibers and the matrix is presumed to occur at very low stresses. Subsequently, only frictional bonding can provide for the transfer of load from the matrix to the fibers. The force normal to the fiber-matrix interface which gives rise to this friction is assumed to arise from the matrix shrinkage which occurs during solidification. The behavior of metallic filamentary-composite materials would be expected to differ from that of fiberglas in several significant aspects. Residual stresses resulting from differences in thermal contraction can be kept to a minimum by proper heat treatment. A strong wetted bond is formed between the two phases. In brazed joints,2 for example, the interphase bond is sufficiently strong that the weaker material will fail before separation occurs at the interface. Most metal filaments can undergo appreciable amounts of plastic deformation before failure. Failure by plastic instability or necking frequently occurs in metallic filaments, but not in glass fibers tested at room temperature. Differences between the behavior of fiberglas-polymer and metallic filamentary composites have indeed been observed in composites containing various types of metallic filaments in a silver matrix.3,4 At strains of the order of 10-2 pct, all the deformation was accommodated by the silver matrix. Hence, the strength of the composite depended only on the fiber concentration and not on the nature of the fiber. At higher strains, the strength of the composite increased when filaments with higher work-hardening rates were used. Surface slip line observations on a silver-mild steel composite that had been stretched 4 pct showed that an appreciable amount of deformation occurred in the filaments. Work on tungsten-copper filamentary composites5 has shown that the ultimate tensile strength for varying filament fractions followed a linear mixture rule. Assuming that the axial strains in both filaments and the matrix are equal, this linear mixture rule can be expressed as: The subscripts c, f, and m refer to the composite, filaments, and matrix, respectively. A and V are the area and volume fractions of each component. sc and of are the ultimate tensile strengths of the composite and the filaments. sm is the flow stress of matrix at a strain equal to the elongation at failure of the filaments. However, the tungsten filaments can undergo only a limited elongation before they fracture without an appreciable reduction in area. A composite containing more ductile filaments might indeed deviate from this linear mixture rule for the ultimate tensile strength, since filament failure by necking might be arrested by the matrix. SPECIMEN PREPARATION Specimens were prepared from 0.8 pct carbon steel piano wires of 0.015 in. initial diameter. BAUXITE, at first considered as a mineralogical curiosity without importance, now attracts daily increased attention from mineralogists, geologists, and manufacturers. The metallurgy of aluminum, which has entered with the advent of electrolysis upon a new phase within the last few years, requires every day larger quantities of pure alumina, and this can only be obtained from bauxite, which is, of known substances, the richest in free alumina. Bauxite has been mined since 1872 in France, whereabout 200,000 tons have been produced, and where, as a natural consequence, its deposits, qualities, and applications have become known. Within a few years past, discoveries of important deposits of bauxite have been made in the United States and Canada, and this almost entirely new subject has thus acquired an additional interest for the mining engineers and metallurgists of the American continent. Edward Leonce Dufourcq, mining engineer, President of Dufourcq & Co., Inc., New York, and Assistant General Manager of the Teziutlan Copper Co., New York, was attacked by bandits and mortally wounded on Wednesday, Apr. 16, while trying out a' gasoline motor car on a line of railroad between Teziutlan and the company's mine, twelve miles away. Word of his death was received Friday by Mrs. Effie Mason Dufourcq of 227 Riverside Drive and by D. C. Brown, Vice-president of the Teziutlan Copper Co.

The morphology and growth rate of ice grown in supercooled water are markedly affected by convection of the water. A dendritic ice sheet with water flowing past the dendrite tip exhibits deflection of the dendrite spine toward the upstream direction, accelerated growth of secondary spines on the upstream side, and suppression 01" secondaries on the downstream side. Flow causes a thin disk to become corrugated, the corrugations being parallel to the flow. Flow causes an increase in the growth rate of the ice. IF a small seed of ice is placed in slightly supercooled water, it grows initially as a disk with the axis of the disk parallel to the c axis of the ice crystal.' It appears that growth in the c direction is inhibited, while growth occurs with equal facility in all directions in the basal plane. It appears that growth rate as a function of interface temperature is very nearly equal for all directions similarly oriented relative to the c axis. Subsequent to the discoid growth, branching occurs and dendrites develop. The primary dendrite spines grow parallel to the six equivalent a axes of the crystal. Secondary, and in some cases, tertiary spines also grow in these directions. The highly anisotropic: dendritic growth indicates that there must be some finite difference of growth rate for different directions in the basal plane. These differences must be quite small, however, since if they were large, the discoid mode would not occur. Hence, it was expected that the dendrite growth direction could be deflected from the crystallographic direction by perturbation of the thermal field at the dendrite tip. Experiments were done in which perturbation of the thermal field was accomplished by causing the supercooled water to flow past the dendrite tip. The flow direction was perpendicular to the c axis of the crystal, and was perpendicular to the primary spine of the unperturbed crystal. Supercooled water was supplied by a 15 cm cubical copper box, which was refrigerated and insulated so it could cool water to temperatures down to —2oC, and maintain the temperature constant to O.l°C for the duration of a run. A lucite box containing dry air was employed to prevent condensation. Ice of the desired orientation was provided by the seed holder shown in Fig. l(b). This device was made of lucite, and had a reservoir in which ice could be frozen by placing it in a freezer. This reservoir com-unicated with the outside only through a narrow gap between two sheets of lucite. The seed holder (after ice had been washed off its exterior) was immersed in the tank of supercooled water, the narrow gap terminating in a slot in the top of the flow channel. Ice growing through a thin water layer in the gap between the two sheets of lucite was oriented so its c axis was perpendicular to the sheets. This orientation is an application of a growth phenomenon2 which causes ice growing along a smooth solid surface in supercooled water to orient itself so its c axis is normal to the surface. NOT long ago I was called upon to conduct some experiments on the treatment of ores from the New Cornelia copper mine, Ajo mountains, Arizona, for the Calumet & Arizona Copper Co. The problem was a very interesting one and contained some unusual features. Incidental with this problem was the utilization of a large amount of low-grade pyrite in the Bisbee mines of the company, provided this could be accomplished by any feasible method. The New Cornelia mine is situated 45 miles south of Gila Bend, the nearest railroad point, on the Southern Pacific Railroad. It is about 160 miles, almost due west, from Tucson. This section is one of the most arid in the United States. The normal annual precipitation, as given by the United States Weather Bureau covering a period from 1870 to 1901, is 3 to 5 in. During June and July, 1913, the records kept by the company gave the following results. These are all I have available, but they show the enormous evaporation that can be expected, which may be a factor in leaching operations on a large scale.

Owing to the high conductivity of the steel shell, the temperatures which were taken on the outside were not representative of the two temperatures resulting from heat flow through the insulating brick. The following resolution was passed by the Military Engineering Committee of New York on April 12, 1917. Copies are being sent to each member of Congress and to each of the five members in every State forming the committee representing, the five National engineering societies which carried on the industrial census under the direction of Howard Coffin. The Committee is urging every man to wire his Congressman and his Senator, asking him to do everything in his power to obtain favorable action by Congress on this resolution: Whereas in any large army to be created for the war, engineer troops will be needed in large numbers, and Whereas they should be officered by skilled engineers only, and Whereas the composition and training of such troops differ so much from the composition and training of non-technical troops that they should be organized under one central authority rather than under many scattered authorities. Now, therefore, be it resolved: That the members of the Senate and House of Representatives be requested to insist that all new units of engineer troops be organized and maintained by the War Department and not by the individual States.
