Since the first major mine development, the company has continually looked for ways of improving drifting methods. The planned increase in production to 60,000 tpd, and the lack of trained personnel, requires new development methods to maintain this high production rate. In order to finish the drifting on the 2015 and 2075 levels, a total of 59,000 ft is required, or two years at the present rate.

For this vast program, the explosives industry was well prepared. THE DeHoff method' of analysis of ellipsoids of constant shape provides a quantitative metallo-graphic technique whereby the actual size distribution of the ellipsoids may be determined from polished and etched random planar sections. This method provides a useful metallographic tool since it appears to be the only method available for determining the size distribution of nonequiaxed second-phase particles. This method, however, assumes that the type of particle being studied is known to be either oblate or prolate of a fixed minor to major axis ratio, q. This, in general, means that one assumes either oblate or prolate ellipsoids of a given q and checks the total volume and surface area of the second phase as determined from the particle size distribution to values of these quantities determined by other techniques. Suitable check methods may be point counting, lineal fraction, and areal fraction methods for obtaining the total volume and the Smith and Guttman2 method of intercepts for obtaining the total surface area. If the initial guess at particle shape and q were incorrect, i.c., the volume and surface information obtained from the particle size distribution data does not agree with those values obtained by other techniques, another assumption must be made and the particle size dist distribution must be recalculated. A current study in this laboratory has involved a large number of these calculations. To facilitate the handling of the calculations, the DeHoff method was programmed in the FORTRAN language for an IBM 1620 computer. The purpose of this note is to briefly describe this program. The complete program along with a list of variable names, a sample input, and a sample output may be obtained from the senior author. Basically, the program provides for the calculation of particle size distributions for a series of q values for both oblate and prolate ellipsoids for each set of input data. The total volume of second-phase particles per unit volume are calculated for each calculated particle size distribution. The output of the program is arranged to allow a rapid comparison of the calculated volume and surface values to data obtained by independent check measurements. A condensed flow chart of the program in the notation of DeHoff1 is given in Fig. 1 The calculation of the number of particles per unit volume in the jth size class, Ni, according to the DeHoff method' is: where k(q) is the shape-correction factor given by DeHoff as a function of q for both oblate and prolate ellipsoids, A is the size-class increment, k is the number of size classes, ni is the number of particles in the ith class on the planar measurement surface, and B(j,i) are the saltykov3 coefficients which correct for measurement surfaces which do not pass through the major and minor axes of the particles. The values of /3(j,i) are included as a two-dimensional array in the program. Particular values of k(q) are included in the program in increments of q of 0.05. The first calculation is carried out for q = 1 (spheres), the second for q = 0.95 oblate, the third for q = 0.95 prolate, and so forth. The number of q values chosen for the calculation is determined by a control card in the input for each set of data.

All available data concerning risk as it applies to scaling up pyrometallurgical plants, processes, and equipment are determined to estimate the statistical chance of success. Random numbers are assigned to all data in order to avoid any chance of bias. The data bank is organized in such a way that an estimate can be made of the degrees of risk involved over a wide range of circumstances. Included are duplicating existing designs and large commercial installations based on smaller commercial installations, pilot models, or bench models.

CLARENCE N. FENNER.-Mr. Gelstharp, chief chemist of the Pitts-burgh Plate Glass Co., has directed my attention to the fact that that company was using optical pyrometers obtained from the Leeds & Northrup Co. several months before the members of the Geophysical Laboratory arrived at Charleroi. I am glad to make this correction. The chief object of my paper was to emphasize the necessity of careful temperature control in the making of optical glass and to describe the kind of tests to which an optical pyrometer should be subjected at a glass plant in order to obtain information regarding the closeness with which its readings correspond with true temperatures under the condi-tions which prevail in each particular case.

Strength, permeability, and deformational properties of a rock mass are influenced and often controlled by the geological discontinuities within the mass. These properties are often determined by physical tests conducted within and on portions of the rock mass under consideration. Any extrapolation of these test results to other portions of the rock mass assumes that a similar pattern of discontinuities, having similar properties, exists throughout the region of extrapolaion. A survey in which various joint properties of interest are measured may be conducted to sample the joint population of the mass. Suitable data manipulation and handling techniques are developed to permit the definition of the joint population of the rock mass. The validity of the extrapolation of test results may then be assessed.

THE test of the English cupellation furnace should be so supported that the cupeller can change readily the elevation of the test, and at the same time watch the litharge channel. It is also important to raise or lower either side, independently of the other, in me of uneven wear of the side walls or of the breast. If the refined silver is poured from the test, it is much better to control the lowering of the test from the front than to raise the back by screws or a lever. In order to enable the cupeller to manipulate the test with one hand, when the litharge is running, and to pour the refined silver from the test without aid, I have altered the common support to the test, as shown in the accompanying drawing. The common method of supporting the test is by four screws, working in cross-bar nuts beneath the test. The points of the screws set, into the test plate upon which the test rests. These screws are usually worked by pounding or pulling upon the heads, which may be either small pulleys or straight bars, as shown on the back screws in the drawing. The Lo Aguirre ore deposit of Sociedad Minera Pudahuel is expected to have a life of 12 years, producing 16,500 mt per year of copper cathodes. The total copper content of the ore ranges from 2% in acid-soluble form to 2% as sulfides. Sociedad Minera Pudahuel chose TL leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning as the processing steps to give low investment and operating costs. Design and operating criteria of the TL leach plant have been obtained in an experimental program carried out since 1974. Bench scale tests indicated that 90% of the oxidic copper and 35% of the sulfidic copper could be extracted to give 5 gpl copper by treating crushed ore with acid, curing, and rinsing in a column with a dilute acid solution containing ferric sulfate which is requllred to solubilize the sulfides. These results were verified in a pilot plant which combined leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. Raffinate was recycled to the leaching circuit after oxidation to regenerate ferric ion. Refinements in the processing have resulted in significant improvements in extraction to give 95% to 98% recovery of the oxidic copper and 55% and 60% of the sulfidic copper. The plant is expected to give this degree of recovery. As a consequence, the original plan to include a concentrator in the plant has been abandoned.

DURING the latter part of the year 1932, the Servico Geologico e Mineralogico do Brasil ordered four magnetic field balances with tem-perature-compensated magnetic systems and a photographic recording apparatus for the registration of the diurnal variation. These instru-ments were delivered during the early part of the year 1933 and a short time later were taken to Santa Catherina for use in the field. Before the field work was begun, a series of experiments was carried out to determine the behavior of these new instruments under existing field conditions. The recording instruments were mounted in an under-ground chamber and their sensitivities checked by means of a Helmholtz coil. The field instruments were then mounted at fixed stations and readings were taken to determine the diurnal variation and compare it with the photographic records. The data obtained with the horizontal field balances were concordant but that obtained with the vertical component instruments showed a considerable divergence. This divergence was of such a magnitude that it was necessary to spend considerable time in determining its cause and finding a means of improving the functioning of the instruments. This paper presents the results of our observations on these systems and the conclusions at which we arrived; also the means we took to partly elimi-nate the difficulty until new systems could be ordered from Germany.

Geological Survey published the data on the Central Mining District collected by Lindgren and Gratonl and by Paige2 much new information has been obtained by development and mapping, but none of it had been published until recently when Kniffin3 published on Fierro, Lasky4 on the Ground Hog mine, Thorne5 on Santa Rita and Landon6 filed a thesis on the Fierro-Hanover-Santa Rita area at the University of Chicago. During the years 1927-1930 much of the writer's time was spent in mapping the geology and ore deposits of this district, particularly in the area of the zinc deposits at Hanover. Some of the data collected are presented here. Previous publications have been freely drawn upon and additional data used that were generously supplied by L. M. Kniffin, Wilfred Wright and Gerald Ballmer. Thanks are due Augustus Locke, Samuel G. Lasky, Kniffin, Wright and Ballmer for suggestions and critical readings of the manuscript, and to the Empire Zinc Co.
