IT is recognized that ingot structure is important in determining the quality of finished steel. Such elements of ingot structure as the size, shape and distribution of primary crystals; the size, shape and distribution of shrinkage cavities; the degree and kind of segregation (both macro and micro); the distribution of nonmetallic impurities and gas cavities are each the result of solidification phenomena. These structural features vary with variations in ingot practice: Their control requires a knowledge of their correlation with the variables of ingot practice. The structures of full-sized commercial steel ingots have been studied extensively by the Steel Ingots Committee of the Iron and Steel Institute.1 This work has contributed much to our knowledge of ingot structure and the factors that control it. These investigations of necessity have been limited in scope because of their costliness and the great amount of time required. Studies of the structure of small steel ingots have not been very satisfactory because of the rapid rate of freezing of the ingots. Their structures are thus difficult to resolve and to interpret. Medium sizes of steel ingots in the ranges of 150 to 500 lb. do offer opportunity for study, but their cost also becomes greater and their use less expeditious. Experimental models for the study of steel-ingot structure have been made of nonferrous metals. Gathmann2 used lead-tin alloys and reported that they were satisfactory for determination of the location of the major shrinkage cavities and the "planes of weakness" resulting from the pattern of crystallization. Certain features of mold design have been illustrated by these results. Bezdenezhnihk3 has used copper and aluminum ingots similarly and has shown the effect of mold-wall thickness on the depth of columnar grains. These studies of nonferrous models have been useful, but their results have been limited because the analogy with steel ingots obviously is not a close one. Model wax ingots have also been useful in pointing out important features of mold design. Gathmann4 watched the solidification of wax ingots, through a glass-walled mold, and has reported the effects of mold type on the location of the shrinkage cavities. Segregation was simulated by using a mixture of paraffin and stearine and adding a red dye that on freezing segregated preferentially to the stearine. Brearley5 also used wax models to determine .the effects of some of the principal features of mold design. Carlsson and Hultgren6 used stearic acid to show that the columnar crystals of ingots tend to slope upward progressively from the mold wall toward the center of the ingot. The basic equations for the flow of gases, compressible liquids and incompressible liquids are derived and the full implications of linearising then discussed. Approximate solutions of these equations are obtained by introducing the concept of a disturbed zone around the well, which expands outwards into the reservoir as fluid is produced. Many important and well-established results are deduced in terms of simple functions rather than the infinite series, or numerical solutions normally associated with these problems. The wide range of application of this approach to transient radial flow problems is illustrated with many examples including: gravity drainage of depletion-type reservoirs; multiple well systems; well interference. INTRODUCTION A large number of problems concerning the flow of fluids in oil reservoirs have been solved by both analytical and numerical methods but in almost all cases these solutions have some disadvantages — the analytical ones usually involve rather complex functions (infinite series or infinite integrals) which are difficult to handle, and the numerical ones tend to mask the physical principles underlying the problem. It would seem appropriate, therefore, to try to find approximate analytical solutions to these problems without introducing any further appreciable errors, so that the physical nature of the problem is retained and solutions of comparable accuracy are obtained. One class of problems will be considered in this paper, namely, transient radial flow problems, and it will be shown that approximate analytical solutions of the equations governing radial flow can be obtained, and that these solutions yield comparable results to those calculated numerically and those obtained from "exact" solutions. It will also be shown that the restrictions imposed upon the dependent variable (pressure) are just those which have to be assumed in deriving the usual diffusion-type equations. The method was originally suggested by Guseinov,1 who (a) postulated a disturbed zone in the reservoir, the radius of which increases with time, and (b) replaced the time derivatives in the basic differential equation by its mean value in the disturbed zone. In this paper it is proposed to review the basic theory leading to the equations governing the flow of homogeneous fluids in porous media and to consider the full implications of the approximation introduced in linearising them. The Guseinov-type approximation will then be applied to these equations and the solutions for the flow of compressible and incompressible fluids, and gases in bounded and infinite reservoirs obtained. As an example of the application of this type of approximation, solutions to such problems as production from stratified reservoirs, radial permeability discontinuities; multiple-well systems, and well interference will be given. These solutions agree with many other published results, and in some cases they may be extended to more complex problems without the computational difficulties experienced by other authors. THEORY In order to review the basic theory from a fairly general standpoint it is proposed to limit the idealising assumptions to the minimum necessary for analytical convenience. The assumptions to be made are the following: 1. That the flow is irrotational. 2. That the formation is of constant thickness. 3. Darcy's Law is valid. 4. The formation is saturated with a single homogeneous fluid.

A METHOD was recently devised to indicate two or more successive stages of the migration of grain boundaries in aluminum, and to record the direction of the migration. This technique was used for the study of the various types of boundary migration occurring in high purity aluminum.' The method employs alternate annealing and electrolytic etching treatments, repeated as many times as desired. All successive sets of grain boun- dary positions revealed by the various etches appear superimposed on each other. The last etch is designed to leave an oxide film on the surface which is optically anisotropic. The orientation of the oxide film at each point is determined by the orientation of the underlying aluminum grain. When viewed with polarized light using crossed nicols and a Biot-Klein quartz plate, grains with differing orientations appear in different colors, as described by Hone and Pearson.' Since the adoption by the U. S. Bureau of Standards several years ago of specifications for standard 100- and 200-mesh sieves, frequent requests have been received that this Bureau test and certify sieves of other sizes than these. With a view to the adoption of a series of standard testing sieves which might be of use to all industries making fineness tests, this Bureau for two years has been studying the question of such a standard screen scale. Various scales that have been proposed were considered, and information was sought of representative firms in the various industries interested as to their requirements. Manufacturers of sieves have also been consulted as to the desirability of different screen scales and the practicability of their manufacture. As a result of this study of the question, a conference was called at the Bureau of Standards, Apr. 20, 1916, of representatives of various committees of the American Society for Testing Materials, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Institute of Mining Engineers, American Foundrymen's Association, Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, American Water Works Association, American Institute of Metals and the American Spice Trade Association; also representatives of the Committee of Revision of the U. S. Pharmacopæia, the U. S. Geological Survey, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the U. S. Office of Public Roads and Rural Engineering, the U. S. Office of Grain Standardization and the U. S. Bureau of Standards; also representatives of a number of private firms engaged in industries in which sieves are used, such as the glass, the drug milling, the abrasive, the asphalt, the mining, the spice, the chemical, and the graphite industries; also representatives of the firms in this country manufacturing wire cloth and sieves. FEB. 17-The past month found the average citizen backed off just a little more into his blind corner staring glassily at hydrogen bombs, unbalanced budgets, John L. Lewis, more inflation, a rising wave of strikes, the country's only active battleship on a mudbank, a famous scientist in gaol as a traitor, a favorite actress on a Roman holiday, and rising mountains of potatoes, butter and eggs begging for destruction. About the only bright spot has been industrial activity and employment, but even these are menaced by the coal shortage. Most industries have orders on hand or in prospect to warrant high operations for some time to come. The trend of the Reserve Board's production index is upward except as strikes may interfere. There has been heavy buying at the seasonal merchandise shows, particularly in furniture and house-hold goods. The demand for goods of this kind illustrates greater confidence in the Spring outlook than was generally felt a year ago. Further, the demand also reflects improved market positions due to curtailment of output and reduction of inventories in 1949 and sustained consumer buying power. It demonstrates the strong support that is given directly to many businesses, and indirectly to all, by the phenomenal construction activity that is now under way. The Commerce Department places the number of new dwelling units started in 1949 at the new all-time high of 1,019,000.

I have used for about two years, in the laboratory of the Joliet Steel Company, a rapid method for the determination of phosphorus in iron, steel, and ores, which possesses one or two features sufficiently novel to warrant description. In general, it is the method described by Mr. Benjamin B. Wright (Transactions, vol. x., p. 197), involving the precipitation of the phosphorus by means of molybdate solution, and its estimation in the yellow precipitate by reduction of the molybdic acid, and titration of the resulting oxide with a standardized permanganate solution, according to the principles laid down by Werncke (Fres, Zeit., vol. xiv., p. 1). In the use of this method, I had difficulty at first in obtaining a yellow precipitate of reasonably uniform composition. It is a well-known fact that, to secure this result, the conditions of precipitation must not vary. The principal condition is temperature; and acidity, concentration, proportion of nitrates and chlorides, and time, are important elements. I am aware that uniformity in these conditions has been obtained to a reasonable extent by many chemists,. so that they are enabled to use with success, methods based on the

Two special tools for recovering gamma-ray probes and logging cable from drillholes have been designed by Ohm and Bunker and constructed by Ohm. Though intended specifically for U. S. Geological Survey equipment, they may be used with other equipment of the same general type. Fishing Tool for Probes: A fishing tool of the overshot type (Fig. 1) was designed to retrieve logging probes (sondes) that become disconnected from the logging cable and are trapped in the drillhole. When the tool slides over the top of the gamma-ray probe, studs on the bottom engage the shoulder near the top of the probe (Fig. 2), which is then pulled to surface. The barrel can be constructed from brass or steel tubing. Wall thickness is not a critical dimension, but the tool should be heavy enough to sink through mud or water in the drillhole. The internal length of the tool must be enough to prevent interference with the upper end of the probe head as the tool slides over it. The design of the probe head used by the USGS required a minimum free space of 2 1/2 in. inside the fishing tool, which was made 7 1/2 in. long to increase the weight. The lower end, which engages the shoulder of the upper end of the probe, contains three studs placed at 120" around the circumference of the tool and held in the engaging position by the tension of a spring wire. The studs can be made of any metal, such as steel, having high tensile strength. As the tool slides over the probe the studs are pushed outward from the center against the spring tension, allowing the tool to slide into position below the shoulder of the probe head. The spring tension forces the studs inward into the engaged position after they pass the shoulder. When the tool is raised the studs stop against the shoulder, preventing the tool from sliding up over the top of the probe. Once it engages the shoulder of the probe it cannot be freed until both probe and fishing equipment are recovered from the drillhole.

Few authors of treatises and papers on engineering subjects hare given adequate attention to topographic maps. The statement applies especially to mining engineering in all branches. Even those who have discussed such maps have treated the subject only in a general way. Therefore it is proposed to outline in this paper a few of the uncommon yet important relationships which topographic maps and their by-product, structure-contour maps, have to modern methods of mining investigation and development when the facts depicted on such maps are properly interpreted. Topography, as suggested by the etymology of the word, means a detailed description of particular places. Written descriptions have been found less effective than the pictorial representations, therefore attempts have been made in various ways to picture the surface features of places. Lines and shading have been used, hachures drawn, and, finally, the contour topographic map. To a large extent this style of map is the result of the demands of engineers. It is designed to meet their needs far more than those of the man untrained in engineering. In fact,. the average man obtains a better idea of the topography of an area from the hachure system than from contour maps. Since the maps have been made chiefly for the use of the engineer, they ought to meet his demands on the one hand, and, on the other, should be used by him to the fullest extent. Such maps, when properly made, accurately portray a portion of the earth's surface and should present the topography better than a personal examination of the area without a map could present it, because the person making such examination views only a limited portion of the surface at a time, and estimates distances only roughly with his eye. Let the engineer consider carefully the fact that in many instances the topographic map is superior to a personal examination of the surface features of a property because the map is based on careful instrumental measurements, whereas the eye gives imperfect data because it can be used merely for the estimation and

Very useful general relationships between operating parameters and the operating results for open- and closed-circuit grinding under steady- state conditions are described. The basic idea of the developed methods consists of the introduction of a known reference state. The relations derived from very simple approximations to individual processes allow one to evaluate fineness and mass flow of the desired state after changing the parameters (feed rate, fineness of the feed material, mill length, transport behavior through the mill, classifier characteristics). It was also possible to derive some general relationships, e.g., * an equation for the influence of the operating parameters of the mill on the fineness of the mill output * a criterion to establish if the desired state of a closed grinding circuit is steady state at all * a possibility to substitute the common influence of the transport behavior of the mill and of the classifier by-pass fraction with the coarse stream on the mill outlet product by means of a fictitious worse transport behavior. The applicability of the described methodology to many problems in grinding practice, including questions of controlling grinding circuits, is demonstrated by some examples. In particular, a working diagram of the standard closed grinding circuit has been established.

HOW much can the mine operator afford to spend on his coal burning boiler plant? The usual answer is as little as possible and still get the job done. Thus, attention must be focused on the spot where excessive costs are most likely to arise - the materials handling end of the job. Boiler plants consuming less than 30,000 tons of coal annually can be controlled to the point where costs for handling coal and ashes are under $1.00 per ton. There is a wide selection of coal and ash-handling systems that can be used in smaller boiler plants to provide labor savings and convenience required if management is to accept coal as fuel.

The development of long-term plans and schedules for strip mines now faces many companies, especially those developing large properties in the West. The rule of mining the lowest strip ratios first, while delaying equipment acquisitions and recouping investment the fastest, sometimes creates the situation where stripping ratios are too high in the latter years of mining operations. A program concept taking life of mine return on investment into account is developed in this paper to optimize mine scheduling and equipment acquisition. In addition, quality considerations (heat content, ash, sulfur, and washability) can be considered by including the appropriate blending constraints to meet contract requirements.

Both a graphical and an analytical technique are presented for calculating stream compositions and temperatures in adiabatic staged systems in which solids travel countercurrently to a gas stream. Such a system might be a tower containing several plates, on each of which the descending solid is fluidized by the rising gas stream. Examples are presented in which chemical reactions occur, including the oxidation of SO, by a solid catalyst and the gaseous reduction of iron oxides. COUNTERCURRENT staged processes involving reactions between solid and gas streams are becoming more common. These operations are generally carried out in a series of beds of fluidized solids, with each bed or "plate" acting as a stage. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of such a series of stages located in a column, down through which a solids stream moves from stage to stage counter to a rising gas stream. Typical reactions carried out in such systems are the dehydration of aluminum trihydrate, the calcining of limestone, and the gaseous reduction of iron oxides. Calculation of the performance of these counter-current systems rapidly becomes more complex with increases in the number of stages and in the number of chemical reactions occurring. Calcula-tional procedures for isothermal operations of such systems have been described.4 Actual tower operations, however, are generally adiabatic, and in consequence far from isothermal. The object here is to present both graphical and analytical techniques applicable to such adiabatic towers operating continuously and in steady state. In this introductory discussion, the graphical techniques presented are of the McCabe-Thiele type, rather than of the Pon-chon type. In all the examples presented, it will be assumed that both thermal and chemical equilibrium are attained in each bed. The assumption that the gas and solid streams leaving each bed are at the same temperature as the bed is in accordance with the familiar behavior of actual fluidized solid systems. Chemical equilibrium, on the other hand, is not necessarily attained in any given stage between these two streams, even with deep beds, since reaction rates may be slow. In the last section of this paper, discussion is presented of methods suitable for use when chemical equilibrium is not attained. The adiabatic tower in Fig. 1 has "n" stages numbered from 1 to n, starting with the bottom stage as number 1. In analyzing this tower's performance, it is important to express gas flow rates in terms of a key component or element which remains completely within the gas stream throughout the tower. Similarly, solid flow is best expressed in terms of a key compound or element which remains within the solid phase throughout the tower. Thus, in burning limestone with a hot flue gas, the gas flow might be expressed as G, the pound mols of nitrogen flowing through the tower per unit time, while solid flow might be expressed as S, the pound atoms of calcium in all forms in the solid stream per unit of time. Defined in this way, both G and S are constant throughout the tower. The enthalpy of the gas and solid streams are now best expressed in terms of these key components. That is, the gas stream enthalpy H is expressed as Btu in the total gas per mol of the key component in the gas. Similarly, the solids stream enthalpy h is expressed as Btu in the total solid stream per pound mol (or pound atom) of the key component in this stream.

TO the author's knowledge, only one satisfactory high-resolution technique for etch-pitting dislocations in Cu-Zn alloys has been published.' In that account, pits in 70/30 brass single crystals were produced by etching electrolytic ally in a 30 pct orthophosphoric acid bath. Thereafter, observations were made from surface replicas by electron microscopy. The method of pitting and observation permitted the high resolution necessary for the distinction of individual dislocations in arrays of pile-ups. However, no comment was offered concerning the possibility of obtaining pits which are amenable to optical resolution. Moreover, for adequate results, the electrolytic pitting process is invariably preceded by a polishing stage which could obscure the surface features of interest. Consequently, it would be desirable to be able to delineate, by solely chemical means, dislocations which could be detected by both optical and electron metallo-graphic techniques. This was achieved by the simple expedient of modifying two etchants reported by young2 to reveal dislocations on the (100) planes of pure copper. Single crystals of 70/30 a brass, described previously,3 were sectioned to provide a surface parallel to a set of {100) planes, mechanically polished, and subsequently electropolished at 2.4 v in a solution comprised of 2 parts H3PO4, 4 parts ethanol, and 3 parts water. The inclusion of ethanol tended to inhibit nonuniform surface attack. Etch-pitting was effected by a 2 to 3 sec immersion in a 70 pct aqueous solution of HNO3. The samples were then washed in a fast-flowing stream of water, and rinsed further in distilled water, and ethanol, before drying. It is important to note that this reagent should be either used immediately after mixing, or, if allowed to cool, reheated to about 35°C prior to use. No pitting was obtained at room temperature. Typical results are shown in Fig. 1 where (a) is an optical view of the pitted surface and (b) is an electron micrograph of a silicon monoxide replica shadowed with tungsten oxide. The former is characteristic of a somewhat longer etching time (-6 to 8 sec) which varied with bath temperature. Similar pits accrued from a 1/10 aqueous dilution of another of Young's solutions2—2 M FeC1,6H20 and 7.8 M HBr.

THE benefits derived from stabilization of industry that might possibly be attained through some scheme of centralized economic planning have been much discussed of recent months, and opinions on the subject range from those who believe that some agency like the War Industries Board would be practicable to create and wholly beneficial in effects, to those who are equally convinced that none of the suggestions so far advanced are at all practicable, or likely to be productive of more of good than of evil. The discussion has been on the general topic, but-many of those who have written or spoken on it have introduced economic problems of the pinera1 industry; for example, Newton D. Baker, who referred to the coal industry in his address on economic planning at the Williamstown Institute of Politics on July 31, and then went on to say, "Industrial progress is made by the development of new things, but new things upset the equilibrium of any plan. Who could have planned the industrial effects of the development of the railroads, or the economic changes which you have seen attend the development of the internal combustion engine. Obviously, unless we are prepared to put world economics in a strait-jacket and, like the encyclopedists, write its full history on the theory that further progress is impossible, no such plan could be made for nations which are forging ahead as is entirely rational for nations which are still catching up."

LONGHOLE drilling with a heavy type percussion Leyner drill, jointed steel rods, and a tungsten carbide insert bit was investigated while drilling and working a quartz barite brecciated rock. Procedure and practice were developed and its suitability for tackling pillar and sill recovery proven and extended to regular stoping at Torbrit. Torbrit, as the name implies, is a contraction of the Toric property and the Britannia Mining & Smelting Co. Ltd., the former owners. This silver property, with minor amounts of lead, zinc, and rarer sulphides of little or no economic value, was discovered in 1916 from an outcrop in the Kitsault River, 18 miles north of Alice Arm Post Office, in the Portland Canal Mining District, B. C.

The Parachute Creek member of the Green River formation in the Piceance Basin, Colorado, contains vast reserves of oil shale, nahcolite, dawsonite, and other accessory minerals. The dry alkali process of sulfur dioxide removal using nahcolite (naturally occurring sodium bicarbonate) has great potential A room and pillar mining scheme has been designed to extract a nahcolite zone occurring at a depth of 472 m, from the lease application area of the Yankee Gulch joint venture. Geotechnical parameters affecting mine design will be discussed. A preliminary development plan for mining at the rate of 1000 t/d will be described in detail.

At Kidd Creek, the annual production of 4.5 million tonnes of ore has been achieved primarily with sublevel blasthole stoping. This mining method has allowed underground operations to meet the designed production capacity while maintaining an outstanding safety record. To achieve this goal, rock mechanics principles have been integrated into each facet of mining in the planning stage, in the production stage, and in various stages of ground support. This paper evaluates the two adopted mining sequences based on ground stress patterns, blasting control, ground reinforcement, backfill support, and numerical modelling for stope stability at the mines.

Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada Limited has been mining tantalum ore from the Bernic Lake pegmatite dyke since 1968. The shallow nature of the dyke and relatively high strengths of the various rock types led to the choice of a room and pillar mining method. Rock mechanic studies have indicated that the original pillar dimensions of 50 feet x 50 feet are conservative for existing rooms. Therefore, a plan to reduce the size of pillars using rock mechanics instrumentation to monitor the resulting stress on pillar remnants and stope backs was devised. The paper describes the test work done on the rock types within the pegmatite dyke. The use of Irad stress cells and extensometers in monitoring the stress in pillars is described. The actual results of the program to date are presented.

In aqueous solution, an oxide surface is considered to consist of positively charged surface sites, MOH, neutral surface sites MOH, and negatively charged surface sites MO-. From the mass action law, equations for the distribution of these sites have been derived in terms of the hydrogen ion concentration in solution and the point of zero charge of the oxide. Experiments on the flotation of futile were carried out with sulfonates and amines which are collectors that physisorb, and with oleate, which is a collector that chemisorbs. Flotation response was found to correlate with the site distribution model. A similar correlation was found with published data on iron oxide potation.

THE Coal Division undertook its most ambitious program this year at the New York meeting, with six full' sessions and a luncheon on Monday which had a record attendance and at which the newly elected officers for the Division were announced. Eugene McAuliffe, president of the Union Pacific Coal Co., Omaha, Neb., was unanimously selected as Chairman; J. B. Morrow, preparation manager of the Pittsburgh Coal Co., as Vice-Chairman; and H. E. Nold, Ohio State University, Secretary. During the past year two new and interesting activities were conducted by the Division directed at stimulating the interest of junior and student members. Reports were presented at the luncheon meeting by the chairmen of these commit¬tees. J. B. Morrow. chairman of the paper prize awards, and H. N. Eavenson reported on the work of the mining machinery manufacturers fellowship, the work on which was completed the first of the year. Several excellent papers are expected from these two groups for the next meeting of the Division to be held in Pittsburgh some time in the fall. The regular six-session program was filled from start to finish with interesting papers and much discussion, but unfortunately not enough time for the latter. The papers covered the field of prospecting, mining methods, preparation, utilization, mechanization, and safety, and all through the program we were constantly reminded of the value and need of research in the coal industry.
