BOLIVIA still remains among the oil countries that have proved oil acreage but no production which is being marketed. No steps have been taken during the past year to provide facilities for transport of Bolivian oil to market nor are any known to be contemplated for 1930. The only active operator to date is the Standard Oil Co. of Bolivia, subsidiary of the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey. The potential production from completed wells is practically unchanged from the 1928 figure of 6000 bbl. daily. As far as is known, there has been only one completion during the year 1929. This is the Machareti well, which is about 50 km. north of Villa Montes along the road to Charagua. The well is reported at about 250 bbl. daily initial production. The gravity of the oil is not known but is presumed to be about 40" Bé., the average for the region. The Standard Oil Co. of Bolivia has five strings working on various parts of its concession. No new locations have been made definitely. Company Activities There was no change in the situation of American holdings in Bolivia during 1929. The oil rights of an English company, acquired under a special colonization contract with the Bolivian Government, are being negotiated in New York and may mean the entrance of another of the large American oil companies in Bolivia. The Sucre Syndicate sold its holdings to the Standard Oil Co. of Bolivia during the past year. .A local company called the "Aguila Doble" was formed during 1929 to drill a well or wells near the town of Cochabamba on structures mapped by a local geologist. It is reported that the Government is buying about one-fourth of the capital stock of this company for 500,000 Bolivianos (about $180,000). The company has not yet raised sufficieht funds to buy drilling equipment so that no operations have been started. According to the statements published in La Pas, this company has acreage on seven anticlinal structures near Cochabamba. This area lies about 8500 ft. above sea level on the eastern Hank of the Andes Moun-

DuRing recent years, tremendous strides have been made in the economical use of coal. This has resulted in, and to some extent has been a result of, making the fuel specifications more and more rigid. For this reason, all producers have found it necessary to improve their preparation materially, both as to sizing and the elimination of impurities, either by more effective preparation underground or at the tipple and cleaning plant, or both. This cause and its effect in all producing fields seem likely to continue for several years at least. The splendid inherent qualities of the Pocahontas and New River coals are known all over the world, but their good reputation is only partly due to inherent qualities, and to natural conditions which generally favor loading coal comparatively free from impurities; it is due in large measure to the care and skill used, either with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to ship products consistently low in ash. The first coal from the West Virginia smokeless fields was mined and shipped near Quinnimont, on New River, in 1871, while the first shipments from the Pocahontas field were in 1883. The development of both fields progressed rapidly. At first activities followed the main lines of the Chesapeake & Ohio and Norfolk & Western railroads, and were extended later as branch lines were built from these roads. The Virginian R. R., about 1907, opened up the Winding Gulf territory, which has since become a large producer of smokeless coals from the Pocahontas and the New River measures. Early Cleaning Methods In the early days, the tipples were simple wooden structures, with bar screens for separating the fines from the lump coal. All cleaning was done by the miners at the face, or by pickers in the railroad cars. Gates were provided in the chutes by which the flow of coal could be stopped when necessary while the pickers raked the surface of the coal in the car and picked out the impurities. A large percentage of the fine coal or slack was used for making coke at the mines in beehive ovens. The

PetRoleUm seepages are known in Alaska at four localities, all on Pacific seaboard. These, named from east to west, are Yakataga, Katalla on Controller Bay, Iniskin Bay on Cook Inlet, and Cold Bay on the Alaska Peninsula. Besides these, a petroleum residue has been found near Smith Bay on the north Arctic coast of the Territory. At Katalla, Cold Bay, and Iniskin Bay there has been some drilling for oil, and in the first field several productive wells have been opened up. Alaskan petroleum, so far as its composition is known, is a refining oil, with paraffin base and low sulphur content. Most of what is known of the geology of Alaska oil fields is based on the investigations of Dr. George C. Martin, of the United States Geological Survey. A, G. Maddren, of the same service, has recently made a reconnaissance of the Yakataga oil field. The data to be here presented are chiefly taken from the following publications: G. C. It appears that in the earlier days of anthracite coal mining, 1824-25, the Lehigh region mined 76 per cent. of all the coal sent to market. During the same period Wyoming sent 12 and 5 per cent. respectively, whilst the Schuylkill sent 11 and 18 per cent., the number of tons marketed being in those days very small indeed. In the year 1828 the Schuylkill region mined over one-half of all the coal sent to market, and continued to do so for thirty years (with the exception of the year 1831), until 1858 ; since that date the production has declined very steadily in comparison with the other regions, until, in 1876, it was only 34 per cent. Wyoming, in the year 1820, was mining 40 per cent., but the production of all the regions was very small; in six years it declined to 5 per cent., increased to 34 per cent. in 1831, declined to 10 per cent. in 1838. Since which time the increase has been gradual, until 1873-75 Wyoming produced over 50 per cent. of all the anthracite coal sent to market. In 1867 the production exceeded that of Schuylkill, and has continued to do so since that time. In the year 1876, during the existence of the "coal combination," Wyoming lost 9 per cent.; during the same time Lehigh gained 7 and Schuylkill 2 per cent. over their relative production of the preceding year, the decrease of Wyoming being two and a half million tons, the increase of the Lehigh one million, the decrease of the Schuylkill nearly three-quarters of a million. The extraordinary production of the Lehigh region at a time of decreased demand and in opposition to an agreement with the other regions to limit the supply to the supposed demand mas the cause of the disagreement which ultimately broke up the combination of the great coal-producing and carrying companies. SiR Humphry Davy's epoch-making treatise delivered on Nov. 9, 1815, before the Philosophical Society of London, first announced and demonstrated a flame safety lamp for detecting methane in mine air. Coal mining was known in England as early as 1180, more than 600 years before the advent of a safe lighting and gas-detecting appliance. Mining, no doubt, took place first in outcrop coal, and danger from gas did not become apparent until the workings became deeper and more extensive. Davy's lamp did much to increase the safety of miners, and a modified Davy lamp is still widely used for detecting the presence and approximate amount of combustible gas in mine air. No factor in coal mining has improved more rapidly during the past 15 years than safety measures. This progress came about not only as a result of the workmen's compensation laws now in force in most of the states of the Union, but because the research work of the U. S. Bureau of Mines had demonstrated some dangers incident to coal mining which were not considered to be serious matters prior to that time. Electric power and explosives are necessary but potential hazards in American coal mines. A general mechanization program is now under way, while the mines are growing deeper and more extensive. Consequently ventilation problems are more complex and a demand has been created for positive detecting devices for carbon monoxide as well as methane. Scientists and manufacturers, working hand in hand during the past 10 years, have invented and developed appliances which make systematic and effective examination of mine air possible. The object of this paper is to describe briefly the approved testing devices in use today, with the hope that they may lead to the saving of life. Two Groups of Dangerous Coal Mine Gases Dangerous coal mine gases may be placed in two groups: (I) those that are dangerous because of their explosive properties, and (2) those that are dangerous because of their toxic properties. Methane (CH4) is the important gas of the first group, and in so-called gaseous mines constantly exudes from the coal and rock; it may accumulate and form an explosive mixture. Nonmetallic rock and mineral products are so diversified that any generalizations regarding the industries based upon them are of doubtful value and can be misleading. They are geared to every phase of the national economy and respond sensitively and immediately to any economic change, but the responses vary with the individual products. They are also affected by political and competitive factors to a degree that is disconcerting and, at times, ruinous to operators, owners, and stockholders of mineral properties. It is not unusual to find these special factors functioning in reverse of general trends insofar as individual products are concerned. As this summary is being written in the final weeks of 1949 production statistics for the year are not complete, but it is obvious that few, if any, new production records will be set, and that 1949 level, will, in general, be lower than those of 1948. The decline in output is not alarming and reflects in large part the tendency of users, who have been finding sources of supply more dependable to rely on prompt deliveries rather than on inventories to meet immediate needs. Except for the government's program of stock piling which, insofar as it has worked at all, is of more direct interest and benefit to foreign than to domestic producers, industrial inventories have been further reduced, and the neater balance between production and consumption has freed capital for the manufacturer and has cut down the serious hazard of substantial inventory losses. There are no quantity products and only a few special products that cannot be supplied in quick response to current demands. Normal development of a few nonmetallic industries has been retarded by the government's unpredictable application and irrational interpretation of antitrust laws, and by extension of preferential tariffs to new countries and new products. Synthesis is likewise a potent threat. in certain fields, but otherwise it is difficult to make a review of 1949 read much differently from a review of 1948. Changes have been qualitative rather than quantitative, except for a few operations that have been pinched out by the relentless competition that characterizes many of the industrial mineral industries.

INTRODUCTION Health physics as a profession really got a significant start during the Manhattan Project of World War 11. The Health Physics Society has recently published its 25th anniversary issue of the journal (June 1980). There was concern over radiation exposures during and after uranium production, especially about radium and its daughter products [Jackson 19401 and, as evidenced by the frequency of articles in the literature, there still is. The reason for this concern was expressed by Harley as "Workers engaged in the mining and pro- cessing of radium-bearing materials are exposed to dusts of the parent, to radon, and to the radon daughter products. In- haled radioactive particulates may be retained in the lung or redistributed to other organs of the body. Relatively minute de- posits of radioactive substances, particularly alpha emitters, have been clearly shown to be the etiological factor in a variety of injuries to industrial and re- search workers. " [Harley 1953] Emphasis in measurements has been placed on radium in water and radon in air, since these are the principal mobilized phases; however, it should be kept in mind that radium-containing particles do become suspended in air as aerosols and radon absorbs in liquids. Much of the uranium mining and production is being carried out aboveground. The principal difference between underground and surface (pit or leach) mining of uranium is the reversal in the relative importance of roles for the types of radiation dose. For aboveground the major radiation exposure is external gamma ray, whereas for underground it is internal alpha; for aboveground, the whole body penetrating is of greater importance than the lung alpha dose. AS a result of the politics involved and the law- suits for any and all diseases as being occupationally- caused, today , more than ever before, the successful performance of the activities connected with uranium production--before-, during-, and after-the-fact-- must include the provision of first class radiation protection. Such protection can be achieved by good measurements, thorough risk evaluations, and adequate controls. Meeting the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) philosophy necessarily entails the determination of what is reasonable exposure. The necessary and sufficient elements of radiation safety under the ALARA dictum require a hard look at the dose versus effects data. There are times when the health physicist needs to make decisions of judgement rather than compliance with a well-defined regulation value. In order to facilitate such decisions, the real world must be separated from opinions that are merely artifacts of statistical variation and from the unprovable "what ifs" that are slanted to question the morality of any non-Luddite. UNITS VOCABULARY FOR DOSIMETRY There have been many radiation quantifying and dosimetric units introduced in the past. Fortunately, most of them did not catch on enough to become required knowledge for reading the health physics literature. The unit definitions necessary for our purposes here are the following: -curie (Ci)--unit of radioactivity equal to 3.7 x 10 10 disintegrations per second Webster&apos;s 19711 or the quantity of radionuclide that undergoes 3.7 x 10 nuclear transformations per second. Environmental levels of radioactivity are usually measured in picocuries (10-l2 Ci) per cubic meter for air and in picocuries per liter (pCi/~) for water and sometimes for air. .roentgen (R)--exposure dose of x or gamma rays that gives 1 esu of charge (either sign) to 1 cc of dry air @ STP. The roentgen is equivalent to an energy absorption of 86.7 ergs/g of air [Gloyna and Ledbetter 19691. .rad--radiation absorbed dose of 100 ergs per gram of absorber. The SI unit for absorbed radiation dose is the Gray; 1 Gy = 100 rads. orem--radiation absorbed dose of 1 rad times the quality factor (QF) for that radiation. The QF is 1 for x rays, gamma rays, beta rays, and posi- trons. For heavy ionizing particulate radiation, QF is a function of the amount of energy trans- ferred per unit length of travel, i.e. , the linear energy transfer (LET); the values of QF:LET in keV/um are as follows: 1:<3.5; 1-2:3.5-7; 2-5:7-23; 5-10:23-53; and 10-20:53-175 [Morgan and Turner 19 671 . For radiobiology, relative biological effectiveness (RBE) is recommended for use instead of the quality factor above that is for radiation protection: the RBE is the ratio of the dose of 200 kVp x rays to the dose of radia- tion in question (both in rads) to cause the same

THIS subject may be controversial. Personal preferences influence the final selection of cyclones, and side issues such as costs, floor areas, head room, and ease of replacing worn parts all enter the picture, but the following comments and data should apply to most cyclone selection problems. Broadly, the uses for cyclones in wet classification may be divided into three fields: 1) Open circuit operation, for two products, in which feed rate and sizing vary and the products vary. For example, feed may be divided into a sand product and a slime product. 2) Open circuit operation, for two products, in which feed varies, one product to have constant sizing. This calls for adjustment in either the apex or the vortex aperture. 3) Closed circuit operation, the finished product to have constant sizing. Most classification jobs fall in this category.

Power requirements for a piece of mobile mining equipment are largely dependent on the set of conditions in which they must operate. These conditions are isolated and key parameters are identified. The effect of operating conditions on power determination is investigated. A simulation technique is developed to predict ranges of power demands for off-highway haul units as an archetype, permitting the analysis of changeable operating conditions. This program uses given data, conditions, and probabilities and ranges to solve for individual components of power, which can then be summed. By adopting such a technique, a systematic and rational determination of power is made possible. The usefulness of this basic approach in the determination of power requirements for other mobile mining equipment is emphasized.

MINE hoisting ropes can be loaded to capacity only when the strength of each component is exactly known. Characteristic curves provide this information. When load and rate of acceleration are specified for an individual rope, the characteristic curve assumes a predetermined shape. The factor of safety, is the value drived by dividing the breaking strength of the rope by the total stress on the rope where it goes over the sheave wheel. Total stress is made up of the weight of skip and cage, weight of ore, weight of rope between sheave and rope clevise or attachment, friction load, and acceleration force. Bending stresses are neglected in this discussion, as sheaves and drum di- ameters are assumed to be large enough to reduce these stresses to a negligible value. Fig. 1 gives a family of characteristic curves for 13/8-in. improved plow steel hoisting ropes of 6 x 19 or 6x21 construction with hemp core. The curves will hold for all rope sizes of this specified quality when they are subjected to an acceleration rate of 1.608 ft per sec2. As acceleration rates of most deep shaft hoists are close to this value, this family of curves is presented as a standard. Deviation is slight for other rope sizes. Note that for 0, which is the most important, the deviation is within the width of the line on the graph. In a comparison of values for ropes of 5/8-in. and 21/4-in. diam the deviation ranges from a maximum 1.2 pct at 0 ft to 0.6 of 1 pct at 5000 ft. The value of 5.55 is the same for all ropes at 2500 ft. The tabulated columns to the left of the curves are values of total connected load for each size of rope from 5/8-in. to 21/4-in. diam inclusive. With each of these connected loads the safety factor characteristic curve for the rope will be as indicated.

The pllnse diagvam for the NaF-AlF3 system was used to calcutate an ionic model for the NaF-AlF3 system. Assuming an ideal solution,a series of simultaneous equations expressing equilibria be-tween solid and liquid phases at the euleclic, perilec-tic, and melting points were solved for the activities of the ionic species, the dissociation constants, and the entropies and heats of fusion. The calculations suggest the existence of A13F1415 ions in addition to the F-1+AlF6-3 , and AlF4-4 ions previously proposed by others. The calculaled valnes give better agreement with vapor pressures than the previous model without Al3Fl14-5. Additional possible vefinements of the model are proposed. CRYOSCOPIC1 investigations and density data2 for the NaF-A1F3 system have previously been used to study the dissociation mechanism of Na3A1F6 and to derive equilibrium constants for its dissociation to NaF and NaAlF,. Depending primarily on the heat of fusion assumed for cryolite, the dissociation constants ranged between 0.02 and 0.18 from cryoscopic studies, and from 0.09 at 1273°K to 0.16 at 1363°K from density data. In most cases the values were unable to reproduce satisfactorily the experimental liquidus lines very far on the A1F3 side of the Na3A1Fe composition. This suggested the existence of at least one other ionized compound in the melt besides NaA1F4 in the Na3A1F6-A1F3 side of the system. This is assumed to be liquid Na&13F14 (chiolite), which is already established as a stable solid in phase studies of this system. MODEL FOR THE MELT The melt is assumed to be an ideal solution with ion activities equal to anion fractions. The only cation in the model is sodium so that Temkin and simple anionic activities are identical. Although the compounds are completely ionized to Na&apos; and the respective anion in the melt, molecular rather than ionic notation is used throughout this work. The Na3A1Fe is assumed to dissociate to NaA1F4 and NaF as in the former model, and Na&13F14 to dissociate to Na3A1Fe and NaA1F4. Other valid dissociation equilibria can be written involving these four compounds, but all of these can be obtained by combinations of the two described dissociation reactions and, thus, are automatically considered in these calculations. The model allows for no free AlF3 so that compositions for NAIF3 > 0.5 (mole fraction A1F3 on the NaF-A1F3 basis) cannot be treated. The question of the existence of free AlF3 in the melt will be discussed again later. The constants in the model were evaluated from points along the entire known liquidus line of the NaF-A1F3 system. Previous work employed only the liquidus line or densi- ties near the Na3A1F, composition. The liquidus line compositions used in the solution of the model are from unpublished work by Mr. P. A. Foster, Jr., for compositions between the Na3A1F6 melting point and the Na&13F14-A1F3 eutectic, and from the published works of Grjotheim,1 Phillips,3 and Foster4 for the remainder of the system. The relationships used in solving for the desired dissociation constants and heats and entropies of fusion are listed in Table I, and the points along the liquidus line at which each apply are indicated to the right of the relationships. The mole fractions of each of the separate species in the melt are symbolized by N. Relationships [I] and [2] are the respective dissocia-ation constants, Kl and K2, of Na3AIF6 and Na5A13F14 for this model. For simplicity, these constants will be assumed to be independent of temperature. Relationship [3] follows from the assumption of the ideal solution. The expression relating the values of N to the experimental values of NAIf3, is given in Relationship (41. Relationships [5], [6], and [7] each state the equilibrium between a compound in the melt and its pure solid phase for the portion of the liquidus lines where it precipitates. The heats of melting, AH,, and entropies of melting, AS,, used in [5], [6], and [7] are assumed to be independent of temperature. The compositions and temperatures of all five invariant points (two melting points, two eutectics, and one peritectic) along the liquidus lines from NAIF3 = 0 to NAIF3 = 0.5 were employed in the solution. The eutectic and peritectic compositions were particularly useful because each of these is involved in one more equation than other points along the liquidus lines and thus reduces the number of points required to solve for the constants. Also, their use assures that the inflection points in the derived liquidus line will correspond exactly with those on the experimental liquidus line. The total number of equations is 5k1 — 1, where n is the number of experimental composition points used. The number of unknowns is 4n + 5 (4n- 3 values of N, 3 values each of AH, and AS,, and 2 values of K). Thus, six points must be used in the solution to obtain an equal number of equations and unknowns. The one additional required experimental composition was taken on the liquidus line between the Na3A1Fe melting point and the Na3A1F6-Na5A13F14 peritectic. Previous work indicated this was a difficult portion of the curve to fit. The temperature used for the point was 1161°K, the same as for the NaF-Na3A1Fe eutectic. This choice of temperature gave two points with identical NNa3AIF6 values which simplifies the algebraic solution. The second point at this temperature is denoted 1161°&apos;K. PROCEDURE FOR SOLUTION OF EQUATIONS Values were assumed for NNa,AIF and NNaF at the NaF-Na3A1F6 eutectic at 1161°k. By an iterative procedure, the corresponding values for NNa5A13F14 and NNaAlF4 at 1161°K were determined from 131 and 141. A value was assumed for NNaAlF4 at 1161°&apos;K and

AMERICAN pioneers first discovered "commercial" salt in western New York State. Geologists gave the classically correct name of Salina to the salt bearing strata of New York. Rock salt occurs in rocks of approximately the same age and stratigraphic position as New York&apos;s Salina "group", to the south and southwest, in western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and northwestern West Virginia. Sodium chloride and associated salts occur in brines throughout much of the same area as the rock salt. Brines also are found in areas well beyond the margins of that under which the rock salt lies, especially to the west in Ohio and to the south in West Virginia. The occurrence of the brines in the same area as the rock salt is almost always coincidental rather than indicative of a physical association.

Previously published experimental data showing that both collectable and non-collectable sulfide films may be formed on chrysocolla were analysed, and chemical mechanisms were proposed for the formation of the films. A special technique was developed by which the quantity of sulfur adsorbed was determined for samples sulfidized under different conditions of pH and soluble sulfide concentration. The data on sulfur adsorption were used together with the expression for the equilibrium constant for the proposed reaction to indicate the validity of the chemical mechanism theory. A recent paper 1 about contact angle studies on chrysocolla reported the effects of pH value and sodium sulfide concentration during sulfidization upon the character of the surfaces produced. In each experiment the surface of a specimen of chrysocolla was prepared by grinding it with fine abrasive and washing it in tap water. The specimen was then placed in the sulfidizing solution for 10 min, rinsed in tap water, treated for 15 min in a solution containing 30 mg of potassium amyl xanthate per liter, rinsed in distilled water, and tested for air adhesion in a contact angle apparatus. The results, when plotted as in Fig. 1, showed an island representing conditions giving air adherent or collectable surfaces surrounded by conditions giving non-collectable surfaces. Particular interest may be attached to the region of non-collectability to the right of and above the island in Fig. 1, and to the boundry curve separating these two regions. It is apparent that at any pH from 4.0 to 6.0, where a collectable surface may be produced, a sufficient increase in the sulfide concentration results in a non-collectable surface. Thus it appears that too much soluble sulfide has a depressing effect upon the mineral, just as it has in sulfide flotation. This paper presents some speculations regarding the chemical mechanisms by which the collectable and non-collectable sulfide films may be formed and reports on a physical-chemical study intended to support these speculations. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The experimental results presented in the previous paper were analysed in several ways in an attempt to understand better the chemical mechanisms involved. For several points on the boundary to the right of the region of contact in Fig. 1, molar concentrations of H+, OH-, HS-, and S= ions, as well as various ion concentration products, were calculated. The iron ores mined by LKAB in the north of Sweden have excellent beneficiation properties. This gives LKAB a favorable position as regards the production of low silica pellets for direct reduction. LKAB has concentrated on developing and marketing grades of pellets for the Midrex-Purofer-HyL process group, i. e., such direct reduction processes carried out in a shaft furnace or a static bed using reformed natural gas as a reducing agent. The paper deals with properties and quality demands of iron ore pellets for such processes. Matters such as the effect of the residual magnetite in the fired pellets on the degree of metallization, the amount and composition of the slag phase in the pellets, the mechanism of the disintegration during reduction, the state of swelling of the pellets during the conditions prevailing in these processes, the importance of the porosity, the improvement of the reducibility and lowering of the sticking tendency of the pellets by small additions of suitable additives, and the influence of the pellet size are discussed. A special test procedure for direct reduction pellets has been elaborated by LKAB. Thus, three metallurgical properties are routinely determined separately, namely reducibility, reduction strength, and sticking. The test methods are described. Finally the present and future LKAB pellets for direct reduction are presented with respect to chemical analyses and metallurgical properties.
