Use of coal thermal dryers has steadily increased since 1928 when one of the predecessor companies of the present Consolidation Coal Cu. constructed a complete preparation plant with thermal dryers. Today there are about 25 additional preparation plants that, all together, use over 65 individual thermal dryers of almost every type. The thermal dryer is a heat generator and the unit may have a separate furnace or a firebox that is an integral part of the dryer. It is also a materials handling device that allows an intimate mixture of wet coal and hot gases with instrumentation for temperature control and. in some cases, the more difficult flow rate of hot gases. The materials handling portion of the dryer is subject to the normal wear and teal of any similar device plus effects of heat, water vapor, moisture: and, sometimes, acid. With present emphasis on air pollution. most fine coal dryers have wet scrubbers.

The Oil Shale Corp. (TOSCO) is investigating the application of its oil shale retorting technology to coal processing in its 25-tpd retorting pilot plant. Low temperature char, with a high heating value, plus tar and gas have been produced from high moisture content, low heating value, subbituminous coal. The process, which has been named the TOSCOAL process, uses heated ceramic balls to provide the heat for retorting the coal. One ton of as-mined, subbituminous coal produces approximately 1/2 ton of char, 1/2 barrel of tar, and 1600 standard cubic feet (scf) of gas when the retorting is conducted at 970°F. Properties and yields of the products are presented and compared with Fischer assay yields.

The device here described has been found useful in sampling foundry-iron, and there is no reason why it should not be equally useful in sampling other metals, which are not too hard to be drilled with a breast-drill. It consists, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, of an ordinary plumber's gas T (without bead) of about 1/2-inch in internal diameter, over the leg of which is snugly fitted a small tin cup, about If inches deep, to catch the drillings which are made by use of a breast-drill with a 1/4-inch twist bit, working through the arms of the T. The forward arm of the T is filed down to a blunt edge, over which is stretched a short piece of rubber tubing projecting a little beyond the end. The bottom of the inside of the front arm of the ? is filed down to a slope, to facilitate the passage of drillings into the tin cup. The rear arm of the T is fitted with a tin ring, projecting about 1/4-inch, for the purpose of holding in place a stiff spiral brass spring, which serves to press the sampler firmly against the metal to be drilled. The other end of the spring is supported against a shoulder of the breastdrill. The projecting rubber prevents the loss of any drillings, and also the falling of sand from above into the sampler. With ordinary care there need be no risk of getting particles of rubber into the sample. It is, of course, not possible to get a fair average sample of drillings, representing a pile of foundry-iron, by taking drillings from any one or two pieces, because of the frequently mixed character of the iron. This observation applies more particularly to the sampling of iron as it is broken and piled at the foundry, than to sampling at the works, where, if the furnace is working regularly, a few pigs may fairly represent a whole cast. As we all know, the electric-furnace operation consumes practically 100 pct cold steel scrap. This is in contrast to the operation of the open-hearth furnace, in which 40 pct or more of the charge may be hot metal. The problem of quality of scrap for the electric furnace is really twofold, and in the interest of simplification may be described under two headings: (I) physical specifications, (2) chemical composition. Shipment of electric-furnace scrap to meet required physical specifications is a relatively easy task. The scrap dealer is accustomed to preparing material to certain sizes and shapes. His employees readily execute orders when they are given in terms of length, width and thickness of the material to be loaded.

DURING research currently in progress the need arose for interplanar angles and planar spacings to analyze crystallographic data obtained from hcp yttrium. In the absence of such existing information, a program was written in Fortran-11 language and processed on an IBM 7074 computer. The program and results have been assembled in report form to make them generally available.' Of the possible combinations of, only those most frequently encountered were employed. The ranges of h, k, and 1 involved were: However, not all combinations and permutations of the above appear in the tabulation because redundancies occur in several cases. Nevertheless, fifteen types of planes and all their equivalent planes have been included, giving a total of 109 sets of Miller-Bravais indices.

PROPERTY of Malartic Gold Fields Ltd. is situaated in the great clay belt in the northern part of the Province of Quebec. This belt represents the floor of the glacial lake Barlow-Ojibway. The clay blanket has a gently rolling, almost flat surface, with here and there projecting knobs and ridges that outline the large irregularities of the surface on which the clay was deposited. At irregular intervals glacial eskers dominate the landscape. The ore-bearing country rock is covered by strata of clay, sand, and silt to a depth varying to 40 ft. There are serious structural problems when it is necessary to place loads of unequal intensities on this surface to support buildings and machinery for a modern mining plant. Earlier mining companies and their engineers paid little attention to the science of soil mechanics, partly because they believed it unnecessary and partly because they knew little of the subject. The results are evident in some of the tottering structures in older camps. Careful analysis of soil problems is well worth-while, since cost of foundations may vary from 20 to 50 pct of the final cost of a structure. Low operating and maintenance costs can be achieved only in this way.

Until recently, probably the best means of sampling airborne dusts has been the impinger method. Dust-laden air is drawn into a sampling tube, and the particulate matters separated from the air and collected in the liquid in the impinger. A sample of the suspension is prepared on a slide and counted through a projection microscope. This method is simple and reliable, but it does suffer drawbacks. Since the collected particles must be counted visually, results of the dust count are not immediately available at the time the sample is taken. This seriously impedes studying the effectiveness of dust inhibitors, such as water sprays, or making adjustments in equipment. Greatest disadvantage of all, however, is the tedious task of counting particles in the sample. With the growing desirability of taking more samples, the effort involved in making these counts is a real factor in the cost of dust control. Finally, it is generally recognized that impinger dust counts can be related to health hazard only for specific kinds of dust and under similar conditions. This is because the rather complex mechanism of dust damage depends so much on size distribution of the dust. THE ore from the Butte mines of the Anaconda company is quite siliceous; that is, it contains considerably less iron than is needed for the fluxing of the silica. The direct smelting of this ore, therefore, requires the addition of considerable fluxing material. The only flux available in sufficient quantity at Anaconda is limestone containing no metallic minerals. This necessarily makes the direct smelting of the ore so expensive that it is more profitable to subject the ore to a preliminary treatment by concentration. However, as the losses in the concentrator were very high, compared with the losses in the blast furnaces, it was found, by calculation, more profitable to send ores containing more than a given percentage of copper to the blast furnaces, in spite of the higher costs of treatment. The dividing point was dependent on various factors, the chief of which was the prevailing market price of -copper. It was customary, therefore, to segregate the ore as mined into two classes. Ore in the first class generally contained 5 per cent. or over of copper;: this was sent directly to the blast-furnace department. Second-class ore contained less than 5 per cent. of copper, and averaged around 3 per cent.; it went to the concentrating department. With the introduction of the flotation process, it was found possible to maintain an average recovery, as concentrates, of 96 per cent. At the same time, the cost of reverberatory smelting was very materially decreased by the use of pulverized coal. These two changes in practice made the blast furnaces unable to compete with the reverberatory furnaces on a cost basis. The distinction between first-.and second-class ore was therefore abandoned, and the ore was treated by concentration. Obviously, on ores as high in iron as the Butte ores, the concentrator, produces a product that is self-fluxing; in fact, it is possible to produce a

THE refractory linings of open-hearth steel furnaces above the bath line are subject to severe wear not only from the heat caused by the combustion of the fuel and the reactions of the bath, but also from the melting action of the gases when not controlled and directed, and from the scouring of the oxides, etc. with which the products of combustion are charged. The framework that encases or binds the furnace is made up primarily of an iron or steel pan in which the furnace proper is built, side and end buckstays, and tie-rods. The expansion and contraction are so great and variable that the bindings may be subjected to severe stresses unless the tie-rods are carefully adjusted in heating up the furnace, but they are most affected by direct heat and usually become deformed from that cause when the lining is worn thin and, sometimes, when sections of the lining fall in and expose some of the framework. A deformed framework displaces the skewback of the roof arch and tends to distort or crush the roof. Bent buckstays deform the front wall, causing the door frames to stand away from the lining so that the gases burn between the lining and the frames, destroying both of them. Frequently the frames are attached to the buckstays; then when the latter bend the frames usually break. Preventing the distortion of the framework and maintaining the economy of the refractories are real factors in the cost of steel making. Not only does the cost of general repairs and reconstruction add directly to the cost of steel produced, but the time lost in making repairs cuts clown the steel production and increases the overhead expense of both the furnace shop and its allied foundry or mills. Many years ago water-cooled equipment applied to iron blast furnaces made it possible to increase greatly not only the size and production of the furnaces but also the life of the lining. It also cut down the loss from frequent repairs. IN a paper presented to the American Institute of Mining Engineers, September, 1904, entitled ? Improvements in the Mechanical Charging of the Modern Blast-Furnace,"' I showed the great fault of mechanical charging-devices to be that the materials charged by the dumping of the skip were separated, the coarse materials having high velocity, and the fine, low-thus giving paths of low resistance through the stock in the furnace, which resulted in unequal distribution of the furnace gases, unequal reduction, slips, scaffolds, irregular cutting of the. inwall, " off " iron, and increased fuel-consumption. I showed how this could be prevented by rotary distribution, through which the irregular distribution in one layer charged is compensated by charging the subsequent layers from successively varied positions of the charger, and becomes practically eliminated when the angle between two successive positions is a little more or less than an even fraction of a full circle. Of all the devices then on the market, the nearest approach to the ideal arrangement was found in the Brown distributor, a full description of which was given. The one defect pointed out, however, was the difficulty of maintaining so much mechanism on the top of a blast-furnace. Since the presentation of that paper, I have designed a very simple form of rotary distributor, which may be applied to any form of double-bell charger, retaining the perfect gas-seal, which is so admirably obtained by that construction. In these days, when detailed investigations of stratigraphy, structure, and sand conditions so frequently result in the discovery of new oil fields, and applause from oil companies and the public, geologists do well to walk humbly, and punctiliously to admit that the geologic principles controlling the distribution of oil and gas have as yet been discovered only in part, and that what remains yet to be learned is probably vastly more than what is already known. The few experiments already attempted have been fragmentary, and somewhat desultory, and however positive each of us may be with respect to certain theoretical conclusions, many of the fundamental questions as to the origin and mode of occurrence of petroleum are subject to radical disagreement. Of the chemical changes attending the generation of petroleum from organic matter, little is actually known. Most of the postulated formulas are liable to be misleading, through ignorance of essential factors. Open-minded-ness is therefore a prime essential at the present stage of our science. Nevertheless, adopting the hypothesis that oil originates in some manner fundamentally connected with the organic theory, and in possible departure from such open-mindedness, the writer will pay no attention to the so-called inorganic theory, since every attempt to apply this theory to the study of old oil fields, or to the discovery of new ones, affords cumulative evidence of its inadequacy. In this paper, some of the factors affecting the occurrence of petroleum that the writer believes worthy of consideration by the prospector for oil in any new region will be discussed. Some of these, which arc less generaLly understood, will be considercd somewhat in detail. Other points, the significance of which cannot now be determined, require more field study, and for that reason are here brought to the attention of the field geologist. On the other hand, certain theoretical points which do not bear especially on the oil possibilities of a new region will be given little or no attention. The main topics that will be discussed are: (1) sufficiency of carbonaceous detritus and residues in the oil-forming rocks; (2) stage of carbonization of the organic matter in the oil-bearing formations; (3) folding of the strata; (4) thickness of sedimentary formations; (5) conditions of deposition.

A commercially available microprocessor-based system capable of monitoring 512 channels has been interfaced with monitors for radon, working level, air velocity, and fan power. The basic system utilizes both 280 and 8080 microprocessors in a desktop central processing unit (CPU). CPU hardware includes keyboard, video display (CRT), and disk drive; a printer is used to keep permanent data records. Signals from all channels are transmitted to the computer in digital form where they are processed for alarm status. Software developed for the system allows for audiovisual alarms in the event of low and high readings, rate change, change of state, or communica- tion failure. Up to six channels can be continuously displayed on the CRT for current readings. Shift reports and trend logs may be generated to help the ventilation engineer determine average working levels and ventilation effectiveness. Additional software permits the operator to program command sequences which may be used to automatically restart fans after a power outage.

Production of oil within the state of Pennsylvania in 1940 was slightly more than the 1939 total, and this increase was due entirely to the new flush Music Mountain field south and west of the main Bradford pool. The influence and magnitude of Music Mountain production will be separately described, inasmuch as it is an important producing unit within the state. Production Bradford Field The production listed herein for Bradford field includes only the part of the field that is within the state of Pennsylvania. Approximately 4000 bbl. per day, or 10 per cent of the total Production of Bradford field comes from Cattaraugus County, New York, and should properly be attributed to production obtained within the New York state area, although locally and economically the Bradford field, situated both in New York State and Pennsylvania, is included as a single statistical unit. The 1940 average production in the Bradford field was 34,831 bbl. per day, as compared with a daily average in 1939 of 35,340 bbl., or a decrease from 1939 of 509 bbl. per day. The decrease in production from the Pennsylvania portion of the Bradford field would have been more pronounced if a portion of the crude from the Music Mountain field were not included with the statistics for Bradford field. The decline can be attributed largely to the fact that more properties of lower average recovery were being drilled in 1939 and 1940 than in previous years, and apparently a subnormal amount of drilling occurred in 1938 and 1939, when about 2100 wells were drilled each year. The full effect of the 1940 drilling is not felt immediately and undoubtedly will affect the producing period of 1941. It appears probable that the water-flood area in the Bradford field has reached a definite peak unless some unusual economic condition should cause abnormal prices and an excessive rate of development such as occurred in 1936 and 1937. Virtually all of the production in the Bradford field was obtained by water-flooding methods, as natural or stripper wells are uneconomical and air and gas repressuring have not proved so efficient as water-flooding as a secondary recovery method. Central and Southern Pennsylvania Central and southern Pennsylvania produced a total of 4,604,763 bbl. of oil during the calendar year of 1940; that is, an increase over the 1939 total of 166,728 bbl. The daily average production was 12,581 bbl., or an increase over 1939 of 422 bbl. per day. Table I includes the total oil production for the state of Pennsylvania for the years 1937 to 1940, inclusive, and the daily average for each of these years. A surprising development during the year was the continued high demand for petroleum products and the high level of crude oil charges to the stills. Generally speaking, the petroleum industry during 1946 succeeded in producing a greater quantity of crude oil and petroleum products than in any of the war years, and considerably exceeded the production of any prewar year. Daily crude still charges averaged between 4,700,000 and 4,800,000 bbl per day for 1946 and about equaled the 1945 record, although most pessimistic 1945 guesses, predictions, or fears ranged, for 1946, from only 3,900,000 to 4,400,000 bbl per day. In spite of the high crude charge to the stills, total stock of crude oil was higher at the end of the year by some 7,000,000 to 8,000,000 bbl. A similar story holds regarding stocks of the principal refined products. Gasoline on hand at year's end was two to three million barrels lower, and was considered low for the expected demand during the coming high consuming season, while stocks of light and heavy fuel oils, although some higher than a year previous, hardly reached a comfortable level. The trend in gasoline of high octane number, which has resulted in a marked rise in. the antiknock quality by the end of 1945 (five or six numbers higher than during the war and one number higher than the prewar quality of civilian motor gasoline of 1941) was abruptly arrested by an acute shortage of metallic lead for manufacturing tetraethyl lead. Government action in the form of lead price control, rationing, and the setting of octane ceiling specifications to conform to the reduced ethyl lead compound available were enforced until abrogated at the end of the year. It will be interesting to see how rapidly the octane levels will resume the rising trend, as more metallic lead slowly becomes available for making greater quantities of ethyl lead compound. As octane quality rises over present levels the disadvantage of the refiner without catalytic cracking equipment will increase. Gasoline made by catalytic cracking, without addition of ethyl lead, approximates 77 octane by the official ASTM Motor Method test, compared with 66 for gasoline generally similar in volatility made by the older thermal cracking operation. Catalytic gasoline shows an even greater improvement in the Research octane number, the comparison being roughly 86 Research versus 71 Research octane for the thermal cracked product. This higher differential in Research octane is credited by many, although not universally so, as contributing to better road performance, and consequently resulting in a more desirable product marketwise. In some parts of the country a premium of roughly one fourth cent per gallon is now being paid for gasoline with higher Research octane made possible by including catalytic cracked product in the final blends. The primary use of a portable crusher, i.e., a crusher mounted on crawlers or tires, in the rock and mining industries is to reduce costs by permitting the substitution of conveyor belt haulage for truck or track haulage. The usual sequence of operations in surface mining is drilling, blasting, loading, haulage, and crushing. Haulage is normally accomplished by truck or track-mounted cars, the latter method being used for the longer distances. However, by using a portable crusher in the pit, the sequence of operations would be changed so that the crushing stage would occur before haulage (Fig. 1). Such a sequence would permit the use of conveyors to replace the more expensive truck or track haulage methods. Since most quarry and open pit operations normally require a crushing stage, the only additional costs incurred will be due to the investment required to purchase or construct a mobile arrangement for a crusher. But this factor has to be weighed against the advantages to be gained by conveyor haulage. As shown in Fig. 2, transportation of material by belt conveyor over short distances is less ex- pensive than by truck. The inclination of the belt has no effect on belt speed; consequently, the hourly tonnage moved remains the same. Conversely, the output rate of trucks as expressed in tons or ton- miles per shift decreases proportionally to the haulage speed, which is considerably slowed by the steepness of the road (Fig. 3a). Although maximum possible grades and maximum economic grades of haulage are greater for a belt than for a truck (over the same total lift), the longer haulage distances favor the use of trucks.

THE Eötvös torsion balance permits the measurement of certain second derivatives of the gravity-potential, which are known as the gradients of gravity and the curvature values for an, equipotential plane of gravity. These quantities are influenced on level ground by the configuration of the masses underneath. Hence, the torsion balance has gained great importance for the location of geological structures and thus indirectly for the discovery of oil and other mineral deposits. If the ground is not level, however, the measurements become more difficult, because the superficial mass-irregularities also produce more or less considerable disturbances. It is necessary, therefore, to determine the shape of the surrounding topography by leveling as well as by consulting topographic maps and to compute its influence upon the torsion balance. The correction thus determined is called, in general, the topographic correction; it is composed of two constituents, the terrain correction and the cartographic correction. The terrain correction would be that part of the topographic correction as derived from the direct leveling of the area surrounding the station, whereas the data for the computation of the cartographic correction are obtained from a topographic map, usually beginning with a radius of 100 meters, as under most circumstances it is difficult to level along a larger concentric circle about the station.

The Smallwood mine, owned and operated by the Iron Ore Co. of Canada, is one of the largest ore producers in Canada, producing about 15 million tons of crude ore per year. Located in the Labrador Trough near, Labrador City, Newfoundland, the open-pit operation has ore consisting chiefly of specular-hematite, with some magnetite. The magnetite content of the ore as a mineral percentage is small, but it is of considerable importance in ore grading because of its effect upon milling. Being harder than specular-hematite, magnetite increases grinding time and milling costs. Specifically, higher grade magnetite (greater than 15%) usually occurs as fine grains in a fine grained siliceous rock matrix (also as larger octahedra in carbonate bands). This tends to increase the overall breaking strength in the crude ore; consequently, the hourly mill rate and the weight recovery decrease. At the same time, because of its relatively high iron content, the magnetite does contribute to the amount of iron in a block of ore. Were the concentration of the magnetite relatively constant, its presence would be of less consequence, for appropriate adjustments could be made in the milling operations. However, the quantity of magnetite present for any run of ore varies considerably; it is the magnetite prediction for a block of ore that constitutes the greatest problem in grading. THE PRESENT ORE GRADING METHOD Ore for the Smallwood mine is graded by a computerized block grading routine (using 50 x 50 x 45-ft blocks) that applies simple weighted (inverse-distance) averaging to ore grades. The results of the block grading program are not reliable with respect to magnetite concentration. Factors responsible for this poor estimation are (1) the structural setting of the deposit, and (2) mineralogical relationships. Neither of these general factors are given adequate consideration by present methods.
