This paper gives the derivation of a practical formula for the calculation of slopes in seismic reflection prospecting. The derived formula is an approximation and can be used where the slope of the reflecting horizon is less than 250 ft. per 1000 and the depth to the reflecting horizon is greater than 2500 ft. The slope of sediments in oil regions is generally considerably less than 250 ft. per 1000. This is particularly true of the Gulf Coast, with the exception of the salt domes, which usually have the sediments at a greater slope than 260 ft. per 1000. Derivation In Fig. 1, o represents the image of the shot point a. Then the length of the path acb is equal to ob and ae'd is equal to od. In the triangle aob, p is equal to ob, x is equal to , and c is equal to ao. The angle u is the apparent dip of the reflecting horizon. Angle oab is equal to (90" - u). At the time this matter first came up in 1912, the National Malleable and Steel Castings Co. had seven basic-bottom open-hearth furnaces in its plant at Sharon, Fa., using fuel oil, then costing about 2½¢ per gallon. The fuel was satisfactory but its cost fluctuated widely, therefore the use of pulverized coal, which had been successful in the cement industry and in some metallurgical furnaces, was suggested. After a thorough investigation, and an actual trial on one of the open-hearth furnaces, to be certain that the siliceous ash in the coal would not seriously affect the basic slags, the management of this company approved its adoption and a complete installation was started. The conclusion had been reached that the success of the operation depended on pulverizing the coal to greater fineness than had thus far been accomplished, and all equipment was chosen with this in mind. A coal drier was deemed essential, and one of ample capacity and efficiency was selected, which has done all that was expected of it, working without failure and with very small maintenance cost, and is still in operation. Pulverizers The company demanded a pulverization of at least 90 per cent through a 240-mesh screen, with consistent results, and a machine was chosen that was grinding other materials than coal to the fineness desired. The control of fineness was obtained through a vacuum separator, and was governed by the size of the separator and the number and construction of the valves necessary to expand and direct the air current. These valves can be set to obtain any degree of fineness desired, and the result is consistent. Two machines were installed, each capable of producing 2½ tons per hour, 95 per cent through 240 mesh. These machines have done everything expected of them, have run continuously, and are still in operation. An experimental study has been made of the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron and liquid Fe-C alloys using levitation melting and a rapid quenching device. Iron alloy droplets were equilibrated with nitrogen gas at 1 atm pressure, quenched, and analyzed. Previous techniques for studying the Fe-C-N system have produced data which me in marked disagreement. This disagreement is due largely to errors caused by reaction between the molten alloy and the crucible material. With the levitation procedure, errors from this source have been eliminated and precise solubility data obtained for temperatures between 1450° and 1750°C. C-N interactions in molten iron have been expressed in terms of first- and second-order free energy, enthalpy, and entropy parameters. ALTHOUGH the solubility of nitrogen in iron base alloys is in general small, the effects of nitrogen on the properties of steel may be quite profound. For most purposes nitrogen in finished steels is undesirable, particularly in the low-carbon grades, since on cooling to room temperature the solubility limit of nitrogen in the steel may be exceeded and this can lead to embrittlement and loss of ductility on aging. On the other hand, nitrogen can improve the work-hardening properties and machinability of steels while in certain stainless grades nitrogen is important in order to stabilize the austenite phase. It is, therefore, desirable that one should be able to predict the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys. To do this, information is required concerning the interactions between nitrogen and the various alloying elements which may be present in liquid iron. There have been several investigations of these effects in recent years1"7 and the interactions between nitrogen and many elements dissolved in liquid iron are now known to a high degree of precision at steel-making temperatures. Unfortunately, a number of iron alloy systems which are of interest in steelmaking have been difficult to deal with by the experimental techniques generally used for this type of investigation. Among the most important of these are the Fe-C alloys. In the past, two methods have been widely used for determining nitrogen solubilities: the Sieverts' technique, in which the amount of nitrogen required to saturate a given mass of liquid metal at a particular temperature and pressure is measured volumetrically, and the sampled-bath technique in which liquid metal held in a crucible is equilibrated with a gas phase containing a known partial pressure of nitrogen, and samples drawn from the melt are quenched and analyzed. These two methods have been discussed in detail elsewhere.5,8 With the Sieverts' technique, errors may be introduced from the following sources: i) Gas adsorption on metal films which have condensed on the cooler parts of the reaction chamber. ii) Uncertainty in the determination of "hot volume" calibrations. iii) Crucible-melt interaction, particularly if a gaseous reaction product is formed or if the melt becomes contaminated with material from the crucible walls. The sampled-bath method may also suffer from errors due to reaction between the melt and the crucible material. In addition, there is the possibility that gas may be lost from the sample during solidification and cooling. In the present investigation, the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys has been studied by means of a new technique based on the use of levitation melting equipment and a rapid quenching device. In addition to the fact that problems of the type outlined above are avoided, this particular approach has the following advantages: i) The high-frequency current induces vigorous stirring within the levitated droplet so that gas-metal equilibration is rapidly attained. ii) The gas phase surrounding the melt can be changed very quickly and is easily controlled. For example, a droplet may be levitated in helium, deoxidized in hydrogen, equilibrated with nitrogen, and quenched, within a period of 15 min. ii) Melts can be readily under cooled or superheated, thus extending the effective temperature range of an investigation and allowing temperature-dependent data to be determined with a high degree of precision. Excellent reviews of levitation melting techniques and their application to physical-chemistry studies at high temperature have been published recently by Jenkins et al.,9 Peifer,10 and Rostron.11 In the present investigation a levitation melting technique has been used to obtain data for the solubility of nitrogen in pure liquid iron and liquid Fe-C alloys at temperatures between 1450° and 1750°C. Discussion of the paper of JOHN M. CALLOW, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 108, December, 1915, pp. 2321 to 2339. R. H. RICHARDS, Boston, Mass.-I think there is one note which would be interesting to have recorded in connection with this paper, and that is another form of flotation machine. The Minerals. Separation machine has a vortex action, with a vertical shaft and a propeller. This new frother has been developed for the Copper Queen Co. at Bisbee, Ariz. It has a horizontal shaft and a paddle wheel for a frother. It has eight cells, I think, all connected underneath in one continuous tank, and the only separation of the cells is in the upper chambers where the froth is. When this paddle wheel goes around it throws out the froth and the sand goes to the bottom and drifts over from the first to the second cell, where it is paddled again, and comes out with its froth; the sand goes to the third cell where it is again beaten. In that way the sand is continually drifting toward the last cell, while each new froth remains in its own cell. You can see in the working of this machine just the same effect that you see in Callow's machine, i.e., the earlier cell has the darker or richer froth, and the latter has the lighter or poorer froth until you get to the farthest one-which has very little froth, and is very light. Bethlehem, Pa.-Speaking from the metallurgical standpoint, it is quite desirable, in many cases, that the oil be removed from the concentrate in order to facilitate the metallurgical work, and I think attention should be directed to the desirability of removing from zinc sulphide concentrates the oil which interferes with their subsequent roasting. The value of the oil is not large; in Mr. Callow's plant, for instance, it would be $20 a day, and it may be possible that a process might be developed which, within the limits of the value of the oil, would remove it, and thus facilitate the metallurgical treatment. LEONARD WALDO, New York, ,N. Y.-The question came up about a year ago as to why-Mexican crude was not an admirable oil for flotation. I have never heard any satisfactory answer to the question. The Mexican crude has the peculiar property of comparative freedom from dangers of fire, a very great reluctance to part with its water, and a specific gravity almost identically the same as water.

Recrystallization and grain growth in thoria dispersed nickel and nichrome were recently studied by Webster as a function of temperature and deformation. The unexpected part of these results was that specimens which had received heavier deformation developed greater resistance to recrystallization. Retardation of recrystallization was accompanied by the formation of voids around thoria dispersion. To explain these results, Webster suggested that the formation of void around the particles increased the effective size of thoria particles. This resulted in greater impediment to the grain-boundary migration and as a consequence the recrystallization of the matrix is retarded. In the present note an alternative and more probable explanation for the effect of voids on recrystallization is presented. The exact mechanism of void formation in thoria dispersed nickel or nichrome is not known. However, it is reasonably certain that it must be preceded by the stress concentration in the matrix around thoria dispersion during the deformation.'' The resulting stress concentration must be sufficient enough to supply the surface energy for the new surfaces created. Further, the decrease in the strain energy of the matrix surrounding the potential void nucleus must be larger than the surface energy of the newly created surface. The release of strain energy due to formation of crack results in a strain free cylinder of the material around the voids.13 If the void formation is not localized, at few points only (as is the case here), this process may lead to considerable amount of release of strain energy of the matrix. The pattern of recrystallization behavior of single phase homogeneous matrix as well as the matrix having a second phase dispersion is same except for the fact recovery and recrystallization are more clearly delineated.14 In general, the recrystallization temperature is lowered (i.e., recrystallization is easier) with increase in the amount of cold work. This is due to the increase in stored energy in the matrix with increasing amount of deformation. If somehow there is a relaxation of strain energy in the matrix, the recrystallization should become difficult because of the decrease in the amount of stored energy available for recrystallization. Since the formation of voids leads to a decrease in the strain energy of matrix, the recrystallization of the matrix would be inhibited due to the formation of voids during deformation prior to recrystallization. It has been observed by earlier workers15'16 that the presence of preexisting voids in a matrix retards the recrystallization. The essential issue here is how do the voids act to produce this effect. If the voids influence recrystallization only by blocking the grain boundary migration, then the effect should be maximum when they are present almost exclusively along grain boundary. These conditions are obtained during high temperature deformation. However, the voids produced due to creep along grain boundary are not able to prevent recrystallization17 suggesting that they are not effective in blocking grain boundary movement. Recently it was shown by Davies and Williams that the voids can act as sinks for vacancies." As a result the processes dependent on vacancy diffusion like recovery, recrystallization, dislocation climb, and so forth, will be hindered. This fact may be responsible for inhibition of recrystallization during subsequent deformation and annealing cycles. It is to be noted here that there is a large difference between the density of voids in creep experiments and the other experiments where retarding effect of voids on recrystallization is seen. The voids in former may number up to l04 to l05 per sq cm whereas in latter cases the voids density is typically around 1010 to 1013 per sq cm. It appears that the decrease in supply of vacancies in creep is insufficient to adversely affect the recrystallization due to low void population. The author is grateful to P. Das Gupta and S. P. Ray for helpful discussions. Author's Reply D. Webster Tiwari appears to have misunderstood the nature of grain boundary-particle interactions. Tiwari (quoting Cahn) states that second phase particles become more effective as they become smaller, therefore as the voids in TDNiC make the thoria particles effectively bigger their ability to resist grain boundary movement is impaired. This particle size argument was originally proposed in the form of an equation by Zener 20 years agol9 and is not necessarily valid as is discussed below. However, assuming it is valid, it predicts a greater boundary restraining effect by smaller particles simply because their combined cross sectional area is greater at a constant volume. If the number of particles remains the same and their effective size increases, as in the present case, Zener's equation predicts a greatly reduced grain size. This is because the effect

Chemical processing of ores has gained new im¬petus in recent years. The reasons are many. They range from the need to process ores that are difficult to beneficiate to the avoidance of pollution. Although many think of chemical processing as a hydrometallurgical operation there are other techniques. An example is chlorination. Chlorination, although examined and discarded by many investigators, is again being considered as a means of extracting uranium1, treatment of silver-lead ores2, and the recovery of base metals from pyrite cinder and ores3. Segregation roasting of copper and nickel ores, a process similar to chlorination, is another chemical treatment being revived.

Petroleum refining, like other industries in the United States in 1940, focused much attention on its duties and opportunities in the field of national defense. In crdiiter-distinction to the situation during the World War, the industry is well constituted as to existing equipment, processes, and capacity, together with planned additions, to handle any demands that may be made upon it by the defense program needs. Evident throughout was the growing sense of ability to manipulate oil molecules for the production of materials not hitherto considered as being available commercially from petroleum. The development and application of catalytically induced reactions on a broad front is one of the distinguishing characteristics of refining progress during the year. In the hands of the refiner, catalysis has developed into a most important means to secure higher antiknock motor fuels and 100-octane fighting grade aviation gasoline in greatly increased quantity. One illustration of the importance being assigned to catalytic refining is the construction by the Houdry group of an experimental laboratory at a cost of $7'307'30'3, to be staffed with over 100 research men7 solely for the purpose of studying catalytic reactions. In the aviation gasoline picture a modification of specifications by the Government widened the field from which acceptable fuel can be secured, and the continued expansion of the alkylation process in itself promises to go far in filling the demands expected from 50,000 fighting planes. It is conservatively estimated that eyen now the industry can turn out 1,300,000 gal. of 100-octane aviation gasoline daily. The upper limits of octane numbers for regular grades of motor gasoline reached in 1939 were not exceeded, but the average octane number approached the upper level more closely. A survey made of the 1940-model cars showed no rise in average octane requirement of the engines. The trend throughout the year was for greater reliance on the A.S.T.M. method for octane determination. The "1939 Research Method" is less widely used, although still considerably in evidence; the older L-3 method seems to have lost considerable ground and to be on the way out. Re-forming Capacities Increased Interest continued to grow apace in re-forming low-octane naphthas into high-octane gasolines. Some additions, although not great, were announced in thermal re-forming capacity. Interest in catalytic re-forming was greatly stimulated by the technical success of the operation of the converted hydrogenation unit at the Bay-way, N. J., rehery of the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, mentioned in last year's review, and also by the knowledge that recoverable proportions of toluene are present in the hydroformed (catalytically

(written discussion ?).-This paper is a real contribution to technical science; it will make it' easier to think accurately about the inner workings of a blast furnace. I was rather surprised to read that the authors regarded as a new discovery the idea that a molten mixture of CaO, A1203, and Si02 is a molten solution of the compounds of these oxides rather than of the oxides in each other. Surely no. chemist with an active respect for the known facts of chemical affinity could believe that these oxides could be melted together without forming compounds, and that these compounds would then dissolve in one another. This work does, however, help to establish what it was supposed must be true. I think it is worth while, in the light of the work of the Geophysics Laboratory, this work of the Bureau of Mines, and that of previous investigators, to visualize what happens as a charge passes down through a blast furnace, thinking especially of the slag-forming materials. These are chiefly kaolin (Al203.2SiO2.2H2O), quartz, and limestone. These substances do not undergo much change until the limestone decomposes at about the middle of the furnace, whereupon the chemical affinities of CaO and SiO2 must begin to he active; especially if there is any amorphous Si02 present. This forms CaSiO3, and the SiO2, CaSi02 and Al2-032SiO2 then come together to form the binary and ternary eutectics so well located by the work of the Geophysics Laboratory. No matter how much lime has been charged into the furnace, the formation of this eutectic will start it about the same height in the furnace and the gangue will start to get pasty at the same height. UNDERSTANDING of the diffusion problem has recently been furthered by the analysis of Birchenall and Mehl.1 They pursued the problem of the variation of the diffusion coefficient with composition for non-ideal solid solutions. Their analysis follows the tradition of Wagner,2 Jost,3 Dehlinger,4 and Darken,' who assumed the net flux of dif¬fusing material to be proportional to the gradient of a quantity related to free energy. The basic assumption in Birchenall and Mehl's formulation of the problem is that the net flux of diffusing material is proportional to a thermodynamic activity gradient. To estimate the applicability of the derived relations, they corrected the diffusion coefficients of carbon in austenite by utilizing Smith's' activity data for carbon, and the diffusion coefficients for zinc in copper with activity data computed from the vapor pressure measurements of Hargreaves.7 The corrected coefficients for carbon were virtually independent of carbon concentration. For the diffusion of zinc in copper a moderate variation of diffusion coefficient with concentration remained after the correction. The problem of diffusion can be formulated in another way than that used by Birchenall and Mehl. The method is that of chemical rate theory and has been used by Eyring and his coworkers8,9 as well as by Eyring and Zwolinski10 in a discussion to Birchenall and Mehl's paper. As yet the method has not been applied to substitutional solid solutions. On the basis of their assumptions, Eyring and Zwolinski derived a relation between the diffusion coefficient and activity that is identical with that of Dehlinger and Darken but which does not correct for the variation of the diffusion coefficient with concentration as well as does the relation derived by Birchenall and Mehl. It was thought that the theory of diffusion would be more complete if the inconsistency between the two analyses could be rationalized and if diffusion in substitutional alloys were analyzed on the basis of the concepts of the chemical rate theory. CHEMICAL RATE THEORY According to the theory of absolute reaction rates8 the reaction [A,+A2+ ... +.A;->X,+X2 +...+X; EqI] is viewed as taking place in two steps. First the reactants A1, A2, . . . A[i] combine to form an activated complex M with which they are in equilibrium; [A, + A2 + .. . + Ai = M. Eq 2] Second the activated complex decomposes to give the products X1, X2. . .. Those familiar with mill-practice understand the work required of an average bucket-elevator, but I wish to call special attention to the wear on the buckets. I have been studying in what manner the life and service of the bucket might be improved, and I feel that an adjustable lip, attachable to each bucket without the aid of rivets, will be of material advantage. For illustration, consider the feed-elevator of a typical mill in the Cæur d'Alene district. The ore is carried by water in a launder from the feed-rolls and dumped in the " boot" of the elevator, directly in front of the ascending bucket. Middlings from the return-rolls are similarly handled. Under this condition the bucket not only carries the ore, but also picks it up, and this latter requirement determines the life and service of the bucket. It might be said that it would be better practice to convey the feed to the elevator and dump it directly into the bucket, but at one mill at which this plan mas tried the results were disappointing and the rubber belt was badly worn. The wear of the bucket is confined to the lip and the corners which have to pick up the material. When the lip on a corner of a '7- by 12-in. malleable cast-iron bucket is worn down about 3 in., the bucket is of no further value as a carrier and has to be replaced. The worn bucket, containing about three-quarters by weight of the metal of the original bucket, has a scrap value of about 10 per cent. of that of a new bucket. During the post-war period, and particularly during the past few years, coal production has been maintained at a reasonably constant level. This is in contrast to the greatly expanded demand for oil and natural gas. Certain markets for coal, such as the railroad and for home heating, have tended to decrease, but this decline has been offset by an increase in demand for other uses, particularly for electric power. Since the United States has very large reserves of coal and relatively limited reserves of natural gas and oil, from the conservation viewpoint, it would be better if the increased demand were to fall more heavily on coal. Where coal has lost certain markets, the decision has not always been made on the basis of price, and, in fact, in many instances, the markets have been lost where coal could show a price advantage. There are various reasons for this situation but it can be attributed in the main to the preference of certain consumers for the convenience offered by liquid and gaseous fuels. In the production of chemicals such as benzene, phenol, or ammonia, coal still plays an important role. As co-products from coke-oven operations, a wide variety of aromatic chemicals are available. In recent years, however, the production has not been sufficient to supply the demand, and it is not profitable to build coke ovens to make chemicals unless there is a market for the coke as well. As a result, the petroleum industry is beginning to take a stronger part in the production of aromatic chemicals. Natural gas has almost displaced the coke-oven water-gas machine for the production of hydrogen for the synthesis of ammonia, as well as for the synthesis of methyl alcohol and other oxygenated compounds. This information is not new and is given here only as a basis for the discussion of the broad significance of the development of the gasification process. It is clear that if coal is to regain some of its old fuel markets, as well as to maintain a position in the field of chemical synthesis, processes must be available for converting coal to the type of fuel the customer wants, and for a cheap method of furnishing gaseous raw material to the chemical industry. The operation of coke ovens and water-gas machines is not the answer to this problem for at least two important reasons: (1) the limited supply and relatively high price of good coking coals, and (2) the relatively high costs of the combined operations of coking and manufacture of water gas.

INTRODUCTION United Nuclear Corporation and Homestake Mining Company are partners in a major uranium mining and milling venture near Grants, New Mexico. The partnership was formerly called Homestake-Sapin Partners and was recently renamed United Nuclear-Homestake Partners (UN-HP). The mill, originally built in 1958, had a capacity of 1,650 tons per day. With subsequent improvements and the addition of the adjacent Homestake - New Mexico Partners mill, the UN-HP mill is currently rated at about 3,500 tons per day. The individuality of off-highway trucks is largely determined by a number of truck components that include beds, frames, and suspensions. With the exception of tires, these features are generally standard equipment and the mine operator gets "what comes with the truck." With the advent of larger trucks, more complicated haul profiles, and sophisticated production control systems, a new truck support-component industry is rapidly appearing. The impact of the new options for off-highway trucks can be significant in terms of future fleet performance. Innovations include "Mesabi" radiator cores that reportedly offer greater engine temperature control; load indicators that insure proper truck loading at the shovel; and digital communication systems that signal truck status in the haulage cycle. An understanding of tires, brakes, and newly introduced support components is necessary before an optimum choice of truck can be made

No review of underground mining should begin with anything but the new world safety record set at the Grace underground iron mine of Bethlehem Steel at Morgantown, Pa., on Friday, November 12. There had not been a disabling injury (an injury which keeps an employee away from his next scheduled shift) for 550 working days. In all, 2,660,080 man-hours had been worked by nearly 950 employees without a disabling injury. The record was wrested from Johns-Manville's Jeffrey mine at Asbestos, Que. At 3 p.m. Friday, December 3, miner Stanton E. Friend was completely buried under several feet of coarse rock, fortunately sustaining only cuts and multiple abrasions. But with his fall, the accident- free period came to an end at 2,778,600 man-hrs worked without a disabling injury-the new record!
