A coal preparation plant built with conventional materials only might be able to do an efficient job of preparing coal, but its maintenance costs would be high and emergency shutdowns frequent. To remedy this situation special materials are being used, either in original plant construction or for replacement of conventional materials. The special materials vary from high-strength and abrasion-resisting steels and stainless steel alloys to ceramics. They include hard surfacing welding rods, rubber refractories and some of the newer plastics, the merits of which are cited by the author. A coal preparation plant, limited strictly to the use of conventional materials-for example, mild steel, cast iron and ordinary rubber-could, no doubt, do an efficient job of preparing coal, but the high cost of maintenance and increasingly frequent emergency outages would soon force the operator to seek relief by introducing special materials such as alloyed steels, oil-resistant rubbers and hard-surfacing welding rods.

HYDROGEN embrittlement of steels has recently attracted much attention because it is asso- ciated with a variety of failures, especially those of aircraft structural components.' For instance, one of the undesirable properties of the ultra-high strength steels used for landing gears is their pronounced susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement during plating. The presence of hydrogen in these steels becomes particularly apparent through delayed or sustained load failures of parts which have been subjected to low loads for an extended time. The State of Ohio is among the pioneers in the production of oil and gas. Numerous anticlinals, such as the Macksburg, Cow Run and Newport, have been thoroughly developed, and the pools found in connection with them are quite in accord with the structural theory. Numerous oil and gas pools found in the Berea sand, however, demand a different explanation. The study of these pools belongs to the sub-surface geologist, as it is possible to understand the factors controlling "off-structure" accumulations only after a careful study of well records. By carefully analyzing the various conditions over a large territory, it is possible to understand the otherwise meaningless mass of data that one may have at hand, and put it into tangible shape, from which various conclusions may be drawn. The territory here discussed includes Belmont, Guernsey, Muskingum, Noble, Monroe, Morgan, Washington, Athens and Meigs counties, containing the majority of the prolific oil and gas pools of the Carboniferous system in southeastern Ohio. The general dip of the strata is to the southeast, the entire territory lying on the northwestern flank of the Appalachian geosyncline. The best known oil- and gas-producing horizon in the territory is the Berea sand, which lies near the lower part of the Mississippian, with the Sun-burry shales (the coffee-shales of the driller) above, and the Bedford shales below it. The Bedford is underlain by the thick Ohio shales. The Ohio and Bedford contact is considered to be the dividing line between the Carboniferous and Devonian systems. The Berea is one of the most persistent of recognizable oil and gas horizons; its outcrop has always been found in its expected place, and it has always been penetrated whenever the drill went deep enough. It is not expected, however, even of the most uniform formations, that no lithological variations should occur, and the Berea is no exception. Nevertheless, there appears to be a certain regularity in its variation, the main features of which directly affect the accumulation of petroleum.

The phase diagram of the Ta-Zr system is presented with a discussion of the methods used in its determination. The solidus contains a minimum at 1820°C near 25 wt pet Ta. A complete solid solution exists at elevated temperatures between tantalum and ß zirconium. This solid solution decomposes monotectoidally at 800°C and 12 wt pet Ta. The maximum solubility of tantalum in a zirconium is slightly less than 2 wt pet, and decreases with decreasing temperature. The solubility of zirconium in tantalum is 5 wt pet at the monotectoid temperature and about 2 wt pet at room temperature. THIS investigation was part of a program of research on refractory metal alloy systems having potential application in nuclear reactor technology. Preliminary prop-ess has been reported in the Ames Laboratory annual research reports.l Most of the previously reported work on the Ta-Zr alloy system consisted of partial phase diagram investigations and the determination of the mechanical properties of the zirconium-rich alloys. Anderson eta1.2 studied alloys containing up to 30 wt pet Ta as part of an investigation of several zirconium alloy systems. These investigators also determined some of the mechanical properties of the alloys at room temperature and 650°C. In a discussion of Anderson's work, Pfei13 suggested that the bright phase in the microstructures of the intermediate alloys is a tantalum-rich solid solution or an intermediate phase in a matrix of ß zirconium solid solution. THIS study was undertaken to round out an investigation on the effects of solid environments on the brittle fracture of zinc single crystals.' In the previous work it was demonstrated that the presence of a surface film increased the cleavage strength of crystals whose basal planes were oriented almost parallel to the tensile axis by some 43 pct. This increase was observed to be independent of the type of surface-coating material, as well as of thickness of film above a certain small critical value (about 200 to 300A). These observations were described sat- isfactorily by a dislocation-pile-up-at-a-barrier model of brittle fracture2 in which twins modifying the dislocation path act as barriers, their increase in number and homogeneity of distribution brought about by the presence of the surface film. From previous work reported on the strength of ductile metal crystals as affected by gaseous and liquid environments,3 it may be concluded that the effects of these media are present only when the environment produces a surface film on the initially clean-surfaced crystal, or when it has a disintegrating effect on a previously existing surface layer. Similarly, it might be expected that an increase in cleavage strength of initially clean zinc crystals (xo = 3", A, - 28") will result only when the gas or liquid reacts with the crystal to produce a solid, adherent surface film. IT is the purpose of this paper to describe a method used to determine the corundum contents of samples of hard crystalline gneiss containing both corundum and red garnet. A chemical analysis of the rock for alumina would not fix the amount of corundum because at least three other constituent minerals of the rock, mica, feldspar, and garnet, contain alumina combined with silica. In making gold alloys possessing certain physical properties, such i~nportant factors as corrosion resistance, color, hardness and melting points must be considered. All of these requirements depend directly upon the composition. It is possible to obtain the same colored gold alloy by using different compositions, but in doing so one may bring in some undesirable property. Other investigations have been carried on in this field by F. E. Carter,' E. M. Wise12 and L. Sterner-Rainer2 To make a complete study of the effect of composition upon these properties, a systematic investigation was carried on involving a range of copper content from 85 to 65 per cent. Elements such as zinc, silver and nickel were used to replace in part the copper content. The gold content in all the alloys remained constant. Only 10-karat gold alloys of those containing 41.6 per cent gold will be considered. All of the alloys were made in an induction furnace. Each alloy was cast in a 3 by 1/4 by 3/4-in. ingot. The method of obtaining the melting points and making color determinations was described in a previots paper.4 The Rockwell B scale with the 1/16-in. ball and 100-kg. weight was used for all hardness determinations. The submersion of test pieces in concentrated nitric acid is one of the standard corrosion tests used in the optical trade. A test piece in the 50 per cent cold-worked condition, % by 2 by 0.045 in., is blanked from a skip using a die, and the weight loss per square inch of surface is taken as a means of comparison. The time for this test is 2 1/2 hr. of actual submersion of the test picce in the acid. This standard test was applied to all of the 10-karat gold alloys discussed in this paper. The tensile tests were made upon strips of the dimensions shown in Fig. 1. The test pieces after blanking were annealed at 1300" F. for 20 min. and cooled in air. Thc "drop of the beam" method was used in determining the yield point, as there was a very marked "drop" when the yield point was reached.

JOULE-THOMSON coefficients for two natural gases were determined at pressures up to 600 lb. per sq. in. throughout the temperature interval between 70° and 310°F. From these primary data and available information relating to the isobaric heat capacities of the components at infinite volume, the heat capacities of these gases were computed throughout the above-mentioned range of pressures and temperatures. The enthalpies of the gases were computed as a function of state and the results compared with values obtained by several methods of prediction currently available. The results are presented in graphical and tabular form.

THE mining engineer is being more generally called on to examine and report on properties where the introduction of mechanical loaders is proposed, and as the use of these labor-saving devices presents an entirely different problem from that of hand-loading, an outline of procedure is herewith pre¬sented based on five years of intensive field experience in making such studies. It is impossible to outline an examination which will cover every condition but the most important variables are noted and the re¬port may be amplified or abridged to suit individual mine requirements. There are, of course, exceptional cases in which a single minor variable will determine the final conclusion; the result of mechanical loader application can be, estimated within close limits by considering all variables listed and taking into account the sum of all those found to be applicable to the property under examination. It is necessary that a high degree of accuracy be exercised in the analysis of conditions, and that a relatively narrow margin be figured on all estimates of tonnage outputs and costs. In making an examination for this purpose the data as to company name, business address, name of mine, geographical location, rail or water connections, type of mine (whether shaft, slope, or drift), and the name of seam should, of course, be included, to be followed by the minimum, maximum, and average thickness of seam, a brief description of the charac¬teristics of the coal, the impurities contained, location of regular impurities or partings, together with nota¬tion as to quality, uses, and-markets for the coal. It is also necessary to make cross-sections of the seam so that face preparation may be studied in an effort to eliminate all regularly-occurring impurities at the working place. The possibilities for further cost re¬ductions by the removal and gobbling of partings under¬ground before mechanically ? loading out a face are sufficiently great to warrant careful study and analysis. The classification of the mine from the standpoint of gaseous or non-gaseous operation will determine the general type of electrical equipment needed. A notation regarding the power whether generated at the mine or purchased, together with the amount, voltage, and type of current available is necessary since these matters determine the exact type of elec¬trical equipment to be used. A brief description of the ventilating system, giving type of fan, amount. of air delivered, water gage, and whether force or ex¬haust type, will enable the engineer' to figure venti¬lating requirements per man under mechanical loading practices. The pitch of seam in degrees, the pitch of working faces, and a brief description of rolls or horsebacks should be included, as these affect the efficiency of mechanical loading and, therefore, the economic re¬sults obtainable. -Notations should be made as to the amount of water found in working faces, and whether pumping, sprinkling or rock-dusting methods should be considered. As the character of the floor affects the operation of the machine at the face if a cater¬pillar-tread type, its hardness should be determined, and also whether impurities consisting of floor ma¬terial are likely to be loaded with the coal. The char¬acter of the roof and overlying stratification determine the mining system and width of roof span at work¬ing faces. It therefore directly regulates the amount of tonnage to be loaded by machines without a move from one place to another.

Most previous work on sedimentation of coal 1 and mineral 2-3 suspensions has been conducted in graduated 1-liter glass cylinders of 6-cm diam. With this type of large container it is often difficult to see through the suspension and tedious to perform a large number of tests. Furthermore, the heavy glass walls and the graduation lines of glass cylinders cause internal and stray reflections, respectively. To obviate these difficulties, an Atlab Emulsion Viewer from Arthur H. Thomas Co. was adopted as an alternative apparatus. Equipment: The viewer," shown in Fig. 1, consists of: 1) a stainless steel frame rack holding 21 flat-bottom Nessler tubes or an ungraduated replica 1.64 cm ID and 1.80 cm OD, 2) a movable masked 150-w lumaline lamp behind the tubes, and 3) a scaled glass panel with 100 vertical divisions in front of the tubes. The tubes are snugly held by springs in slots formed by spacer bars, which also serve as shields to eliminate stray light. The lumaline lamp is mounted behind a slit in a movable housing so that it can be positioned behind the suspension to be examined. The lowest or 100-divi-sion line on the front glass plate is leveled with the upper side of the bottom of all tubes. The scaled portion of each tube, roughly 19 cm high and 40 ml in volume, is used to study coal and mineral suspensions. Procedure: The following procedure was used in many tests. A 1.6-gm sample of dry coal was mixed with 16 ml of distilled water in an ordinary test tube and allowed to stand for three days, with occasional shaking to insure thorough wetting of all particles. The slurry was transferred to a Nessler tube and diluted to 32 ml. The pH regulator and flocculating reagent were added, and the slurry was diluted to reach the uppermost or zero-division line. The tube was immediately stoppered and inverted downward and up again ten times during a period of 35 to 40 sec. The lumaline lamp was turned on during the inversion period. After inversion the tube was quickly returned to the viewer rack. The time elapsed for each 10-division drop of the demarcation line between solid and liquid was recorded by stopwatch until the 80-division line was reached in the zone of compression. Additional readings were taken at 15, 30, and 60 min after settling began. The clarity of the supernatent liquid was observed also. As the settling rate became considerably slower at the 75-division line, it was convenient at this time to start the next test in a separate Nessler tube. This was continued until the suspensions in any number of the 21 tubes were tested. An attempt was made to correlate the experimental results between the Nessler tube and a 1-liter glass cylinder. Table I shows that coal particles settle much faster in the cylinder than in the tube, which has a large wall effect.' The correction factor for the tube impedance is 1.662 2 0.145 at the 40-division line in the hindered settling zone, and 1.614 & 0.139 at the 75-division line in the compression zone. This rough correlation was established by dividing the pulp height of each container into 100 divisions and comparing the settling rates of the two containers at the same divisions. Tests were also performed to determine the accuracy of the viewer. The results, not presented, showed that error was within 10 pct.

Designing a tailing dam is a major step toward fully integrated mill operation. In the case of large concentrators considerable planning is necessary, and the site of the tailing disposal area may very well dictate the location of the concentrator itself. Before a suitable location can be selected several pertinent factors should be investigated: estimated life expectancy of the mine and, if possible, approximate total tonnage; knowledge of daily mill capacity; and the possibility of future mill expansion. In addition, the area should be able to store tailing for many years and, from a cost and maintenance stand- point, gravity flow will probably be desired.

In accordance with the usual custom, manuscripts to be presented at the next meeting of the Institute must be in the hands of the, Secretary before July 1, 1917. Manuscripts to be properly distributed in advance of the meeting must be in the hands of the Secretary before June 1, 1917. At the last meeting of the Institute 45 papers were presented, and 42 of them were actively discussed. This experience makes us believe that advance distribution is the best possible means of getting a good discussion of papers and of securing for them the interest of the members of the profession. It will be impossible, however, to give the papers proper distribution if they bare not received before June 1, 1917.

THE analyses given in Table I. were made several years ado at my request at a plant using Lake ores. The, are of two furnaces, one making basic, the other Bessemer pig-they gave 6 casts each in 24 hr., also two flushes of cinder between each cast. They- are offered simply for the sake of reference as, so far as I know, it is unusual to find so frequent fall analyses made and none are on record. The variations iii manganese-content in the first and second flushes on the basic furnace are interesting, if no more than a freak-the first flash being invariably higher in manganese. The Tynagh mine of Irish Base Metals Ltd., a subsidiary of Northgate Exploration Ltd., of Toronto, Canada, is situated one mile from the village of Tynagh in County Galway, one of the western counties of the Republic of Ireland. Mining has been carried on in Ireland since the Bronze Ages, but, apart from a reference in the 1859 Geological Survey records to much earlier mining attempts, mining has not been a feature of the Tynagh area in recent times. The present ore body was discovered by geochemical techniques in 1961. Following a diamond drilling programme to delimit the orebody, a pilot plant was operated at the property in late 1963 and early 1964. Construction of the 2000 tons per day treatment plant began later in 1964 and production commenced in December, 1965. The orebody contains both sulphide and 'oxide' ores and these are treated to produce, by flotation, a variety of lead concentrates, a zinc concentrate, and a bulk lead-zinc concentrate, which are shipped to several European smelters. The term "oxide ores" is used here to mean all ores which contain economically important amounts of the oxidised minerals of lead, zinc or copper. THE ORE The ore body lies on the northern side of a major east west fault between sandstone and limestone; it is a boat shaped mass of residual or secondary ore lying over primary sulphide in limestone. A detailed investigation was made of the phase diagram of silver-zirconium, particularly in the region 0 to 36 at. pct Ag. The system was found to be characterized by two intermediate phases Zr2Ag and ZrAg and a eutectoid reaction in which the -zirconium solid solution decomposes into a-zirconium and Zr2Ag. It was found that impurities in the range 0.05 pct from the iodide-type zirconium were sufficient to introduce deviations from binary behavior, and that with partial removal of these impurities an increase in the a-phase solid solubility limit from 0.1 to 1.1 at. pct Ag was observed. The phase diagram of the silver-zirconium system is of interest as an example of alloying a transition metal from the left side of the Periodic Table with a Group IB element. Silver would normally act as a univalent metal, its filled 4d-shell remaining undisturbed during the alloying. However, there is a possibility that some of the 4d electrons might transfer to the zirconium. An insight into such a question can occasionally be obtained by comparison of phase diagrams. The silver-zirconium system forms part of a more complete review of various solutes in zirconium in which these valency effects were studied.' Earlier work on the silver-zirconium system was done by Raub and Enge1,2 who investigated the silver-rich alloys. After the start of the present experhents, work on this system was reported by Kemper3 and by Karlsson4 which for the most part agrees with the phase diagram presented here. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were prepared by arc casting on a water-cooled, copper hearth with a tungsten electrode and in a pure argon atmosphere. Uniform solute composition was attained by multiple melting on alternate sides of the same ingot. Progressive improvements in the vacuum conditions inside the apparatus during the course of the experiments reduced the Vickers hardness increase of the pure zirconium control ingot from 10 to 20 points, observed initially, to negligible amounts at the end of the experiments. Such hardness changes in zirconium are a well known indication of purity. For example, -01 wt pct additions of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon increase hardness by 6, 10, and 3 VPN respectively. '9' Further verification that the final casting technique did not add a significant quantity of impurities was obtained when pure zirconium was arc cast and then isothermally annealed in the vicinity of the allotropic transition. The transition was always observed to take place over the same temperature range as in the original crystal bar. The alloy ingots were annealed in sealed silica capsules for times and temperatures which varied between 1 day at 1300°C and 60 days at 700°C. The best method found to prevent the reaction of the zirconium with the silica was foil wrapping of molybdenum or tantalum. With this method, samples of pure zirconium were found to be unchanged in hardness after annealing for 3 days at 1200°C. In most of the experiments the protection of these foils was supplemented by an additional layer of zirconium foil inside the molybdenum or tantalum foil. The alloys, foil, and the capsule were outgassed at pressures in the range 10 to l0-7mm Hg in the temperature range 800" to 1100°C before each anneal in order to remove hydrogen and other impurities, and to provide a suitable container for the high purity, inert atmosphere, which is essential in the annealing of zirconium. The temperature measurements were made with Pt/Pt + 10 pct Rh thermocouples calibrated frequently during the experiments against the melting points of zinc, aluminum, silver, gold, and palladium. For the longer anneals the sum of various temperature errors was generally well within ± 2°C. For short-time anneals and during thermal analysis the overall temperature error is considered to be within ± 0.5°C. The compositions of the alloys from the quenching experiments were determined by chemical analysis at Johnson Matthey and Company, Ltd., under the direction of Mr. F. M. Lever. The actual metallo-graphic samples were individually analyzed in every case, and prior to the analyses two or more sides of each specimen were examined to insure that the specimen was not segregated. The sum of the solute and solvent analyses was in each case within the range 99.9 to 100.1 pct. In the course of the experiments, minor impurities in the range 0 to 500 ppm were found to have significant effects on the zirconium-rich portion of the phase diagram. THIS paper presents the design and operation of a frothmeter capable of measuring the frothing characteristics of pine oils and other frothing reagents. The experimental data show that the froth-ability of pine oil is governed by: 1—rate of aeration, 2—time of aeration, 3—height of liquid column, 4—chemical composition of pine oil, 5—pH value of solution, 6—temperature of solution, and 7—concentration of pine oil in solution. The effect of mineral particles on the behavior of froth also was studied, and the results can be found in a separate paper.' The results also show that the relative froth-abilities of pine oils in the frothmeter generally correlate with those in actual flotation, provided that other factors are kept constant. In addition to pine oils, the other well-established flotation frothers were tested, and the results are included. In this paper, compressed air frothing is the frothing process performed by means of purified compressed air, whereas sucked air frothing is the frothing process accomplished by purified air sucked into the glass cylinder by a vacuum system. The term vacuum frothing denotes that froth was formed by degassing of the air-saturated liquid under a closed vacuum system. Apparatus The frothmeter, shown in Fig. 1, is capable of re-producibly measuring the volume and persistence of froth as well as the volume of air bubbles entrapped in the liquid and is capable of being used for compressed air frothing, sucked air frothing, and vacuum frothing. Fig. la shows that for compressed air frothing, the apparatus consists of an airflow regulating system, 1-3; a purifying and drying system, 4-8; a standardized flowmeter to measure the rate of airflow from zero to 500 cc per sec, 9; and a graduated glass cylinder, 13; equipped with an air regulating stopcock, 10; an air chamber, 11; and a fritted glass disk to produce froth, 12. The fritted glass disk, 5 cm in diam and 0.3 cm thick, has an average pore diameter of 85 to 145 microns. The pyrex glass cylinder has a uniform ID of 5.588 cm and an effective height of 63 cm. The inside cross-sectional area of the glass cylinder was calculated to be 24.53 sq cm, or 3.8 sq in. For sucked air frothing, Fig. lb shows that the apparatus for compressed air frothing is used again, with the following modifications: 1—compressed air and its regulating system, 1-3, are eliminated; and 2—a vacuum system, 16, equipped with a vapor trap, 15, and a vacuum manometer, 17, is added. The vacuum system can be either a water aspirator or a laboratory vacuum pump. Any desired rate of airflow can be drawn into the glass cylinder, 13, by adjusting the opening of the air regulating stopcock, 10. The sucked air stream is cleaned by the purifying and drying system, 4-8, before entering the glass cylinder, 13. When this setup is used for vacuum frothing, the air regulating stopcock is closed. The frothmeter has been used for almost 3 years and has proved to give reproducible results, as illustrated in Table I. With a magnifying glass and suitable illumination, the frothmeter also can be used to study the attachment of air bubbles to coarse mineral particles.' Experimental Procedures Except where otherwise stated, the data presented were established by means of the compressed air method. The volume and persistence of froth were recorded respectively at the end of 4 and 6 min of aeration at a constant rate of airflow of 29.3 cc per sec, which is equivalent to 71.6 cc per sq cm per min, or 462.6 cc per sq in. per min. The aqueous solution for each test, containing 1000 cc of distilled water and 19.2 ± 0.5 mg frothing reagent, was adjusted to a pH of 6.9 0.2. The volume of froth is expressed as cubic centimeter per square centimeter and is equivalent to the height of the froth column (the distance between the bottom and the meniscus of the froth). The volume of froth was obtained by multiplying the height of froth by the cross-sectional area of the glass cylinder, 24.53 sq cm. Before each test, the glass cylinder, 13, was cleaned thoroughly with jets of tap water, ethyl alcohol, tap water, cleaning solution, tap water, and finally distilled water.
