The elements aluminum,' arsenic,2 silicon,3 tin2 and vanadium,~.~ when used in relatively small amounts as alloying elements, seem to have a beneficial effect on the magnetic properties of iron—i. e., they increase the maximum permeability and decrease the coercive force—whereas there are definite indications that boron,5 carbon,6 nitrogen: oxygen," phosphorus16 sulfur6 and titaninum,~ as well as the metals of and adjacent to the ferromagnetic group, nickel,~ cobalt,1° copper," and manganese,% have a detrimental effect on these properties. The effects of calcium4 and magnesium4 are small, if any, while the effect of chromium12 in small amounts is unknown and in large amounts is generally detrimental. THE Three Kids mine, some six miles east of Henderson, Nev., is in a typical southwest desert area, with high dry summer heat and cool to cold winter seasons. The manganese deposit was located during World War I.1 During this period 15,000 to 20,000 tons of ore assaying up to 41 pct manganese were shipped. Interest in the deposit was not revived until the middle thirties, when experiments on the ore were initiated. Test work indicated possible recovery of only 70 pct by flotation, but in 1941 additional work was done at the Boulder City pilot plant of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and also by M. A. Hanna Co. As a result, the Manganese Ore Co. was formed and a plant utilizing the SO, process was constructed. Numerous operation difficulties ensued, and the plant was closed when the manganese situation in the country eased.

A NEW method for concentrating the flake mica either from present washing plant tailings or from new feed has been developed. In this paper, flake mica refers to that which occurs in weathered granites, alaskites, pegmatites, and schists in a form too fine to be considered sheet mica. It ranges in size from 1 in. or more down to 200-mesh or finer and occurs with kaolin, quartz, and partially kaolinized feldspar. Scrap mica, a term often used indiscriminately to describe everything other than sheet mica, will be used to denote the waste product from sheet mica mines and fabricating plants. Both flake and scrap mica are used in the mica grinding plants to produce wet-ground or dry-ground mica, although some flake mica recovered from clay mining operations is fine enough to be marketed without grinding.

Having worked on the thermodynamics of air/liquid-water mixtures passing through the surface fans of deep mines, I find this paper of great interest and congratulate the authors on producing it. There are two matters, however, deserving discussion. First, the authors have described the classical theory of fog formation with fogging occurring at "supersaturation." In fact, the process of fog formation begins well below 100% humidity. The more strongly hygroscopic nuclei in the atmosphere will attract water molecules and begin to grow at a relative humidity perhaps as low as 70%. The process is a dynamic one with both condensation and evaporation taking place throughout the mixture on microscopic liquid surfaces. As saturation is approached, the rate of condensation accelerates rapidly producing the familiar reduction in visibility. Hygroscopic nuclei are present in all natural atmospheres and under the appropriate conditions of pressure and temperature, will produce clean fogs. However, if the air is polluted by particulates from combustion or other processes then the resultant coagulation with growing liquid particles may produce dense (and sometimes photochemical) smogs. It is this process that is likely to occur in underground mines when moist air is cooled below dew point. Second, the authors have summarized very well the individual measures that might alleviate the problem. In particular, I agree that neither heating nor refrigerating the air, by themselves, provides a satisfactory solution. However, there is a combination of these that provides a neat and effective control of fog formation. This involves a small, self-contained refrigeration unit within a duct but without the usual external heat rejection facility. The air is cooled below dew point and, hence, dehumidified on passing over the cold evaporator coils. The heat from the condenser is rejected back into the air down-stream from the water eliminator, as shown in [Fig. 1]. The duct configuration can be designed to create good mixing at the outlet.

Much has been said and written about the various uses of die castings, their applications in the various industries and their advantages and disadvantages. Examination of this literature, however, fails to disclose any data concerning the effect of temperature upon any of the physical properties of die-casting alloys. The uses and applications of die castings are so numerous, and of such a varied nature, that far too lengthy a manuscript would be required to list all of them. Brief mention of some specific cases will suffice to illustrate the temperature ranges in which certain die castings function. Automobile hardware, such as hub caps, door handles, radiator caps, etc., can be used as one example. Castings of this type are constantly exposed to varying climatic conditions, temperatures ranging from below zero to upwards of 100" F. Refrigerator parts, such as ice-cube trays, etc., form another example. Approaching the other temperature extreme, we encounter conditions such as are found in kitchens in which oven-heat indicator parts, cooking utensils, waffle grids, etc., embody use of die castings, where temperatures as high as 500" F. are often met with. Because of this variation in service temperatures, it was felt necessary to ascertain the effect of these temperatures upon the physical properties of die-casting alloys. The Charpy impact test was chosen first because of its simplicity, and because of the fact that brittleness is more likely to be objectionable in die castings than hardness or other physical properties. Alloys Investigated Two types of alloys were used in this investigation—zinc-base and aluminum-base alloys. Two alloys of each group were included. Those most generally employed in the industry at present were selected. Alloys A and B are of the same nominal composition, and correspond to A. S. T. M. alloy XXI, containing 4 per cent aluminum, 3 per cent copper, 0.1 per cent magnesium, and the balance zinc of 99.99 per cent

The transition from Larger word type computers to the small byte oriented micro-computers has allowed specialized software to be placed directly under the control of the people requiring solutions. In addition, with the advent of interactive graphics, many complex geological and mining engineering problems can be solved graphically, thereby further forcing obsolescence on larger computers. Although the industry has not yet caught on or taken full advantage of this fact, some companies have begun to move in this direction. One such case is the Coal Evaluation System presently in use at Manalta Coal Ltd. in Calgary, Alberta. This system, designed to allow interactive analysis of simple to complex coal deposits, leads one from geophysical/core log data, to geological modelling, strip or open pit design, equipment selection, cost estimation, and cash flow analysis. The micro-computer system used is portable, stands alone, and costs less than $120,000. It is the purpose of this paper to present the coal evaluation system and its development methodology which maximizes the use of the newest computer technology. Further, in order to illustrate the practical application of the system, an example application based upon a large operating coal mine will be discussed.

THE geophysicist is interested greatly in the resistivities of different formations or parts of the earth's crust; sometimes he is interested in a single figure in the nature of an average, or what may be called the effec-tive resistivity, of all the formations or parts of the crust at a given location to a certain depth. Conversely, the engineer whose work is concerned with the coordination of power and communication lines in such a manner as to avoid electrical interference between these two types of facilities is concerned very much with this effective resistivity; to a lesser extent he is interested in the resistivities of individual forma-tions. In connection with his work the coordination engineer often estimates the effective resistivity; of the earth from measurements of the mutual impedances of lines; in other instances he derives front measure-ments of a different type the resistivities of different layers of the crust and synthesizes these to obtain an estimate of the effective resistivity. In connection with problems concerning the coordination of power and telephone lines, measurements from which earth resistivities can be estimated have been made at many points in the United States by the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. and its associated companies, in cooperation with various power companies and with railroad companies having electrified sections of line. Other such measurements have been made by the Joint Subcommittee on Development and Research of the Edison Electric Institute and the Bell Telephone System. A study has been made of the correlation of these data with the ages and types of materials of the strata of the earth's crust at each of the test locations. The purpose of this study has been primarily to provide information to assist in predicting the order of magnitude of effective resistivities to be used in the preliminary consideration of problems con-cerned with the coordination of power and communication lines. To make the results of such a study, most useful, it is essential that the geo-logical data to be secured when such a prediction is wanted be readily obtainable. VERMICULITE is a name used to describe micaceous material that exfoliates when heated. It is hydrated magnesium-aluminum-iron silicate. The chemical composition, color, physical appearance, and degree of exfoliation vary. COMPOSITION, PROPERTIES, AND ORIGIN Vermiculite has the characteristic micaceous structure of basal cleavage and readily splits into thin laminae, which are soft, pliable, and inelastic. The monoclinic crystal faces are often marked by triangular lines at 60° and 120°. Hardness is 1.5; specific gravity, 2.2-2.7; luster pearly to greasy; colors, amber, bronze, reddish brown, dark green, and black. Feel is soapy, particularly when wet. When heated it exfoliates by expanding at right angles to the cleavage into long wormlike pieces (the name vermiculite is from the Latin veamiculari, to breed worms). This important characteristic of expansion is believed to be a mechanical separation of the layers when the contained water is converted into steam. Warping of the unit layers may also contribute to the expansion. The increase in bulk volume of commercially prepared material is 8 to 12 times but individual flakes may increase in size more than this. Pure vermiculite is a distinct mineral and has the structural formula (OH), (Mg,Fe)3 (Si,Al,Fe)4 010.4H20. It rarely occurs in this pure form, but generally as a mixed mineral of varying structure. One explanation is that the mixed material is composed of unit layers of inter-stratified pure vermiculite and biotite. The essential difference between the two is that unit cell structure of vermiculite contains a layer of water molecules whereas the biotite cell contains potassium instead of the water. The water content of the mixed vermiculite is less than that of pure vermiculite but more than that of biotite. Pure biotite does not expand when heated. If the proportion of biotite layers in a vermiculite is too high it will adversely affect the degree of exfoliation. Within a given deposit, the great mass of material may approach a definite com-position with local areas of greater biotite content. It is not uncommon to find also small pockets of pure biotite but these are generally segre-

The oil industry was very active in Wyoming in 1936, in contrast to the several quiet years preceding. Production for the year again increased about 7 per cent, following an 8 per cent increase in 1935. During the year, 85 oil wells were completed, compared to 55 in 1935. Three gas wells were completed in 1936, and three in 1935. At the end of the year 45 wells were drilling, as compared to 55 drilling at the end of 1935. Two new oil fields and one new gas field were discovered in Wyoming during the year. In the year 1936 Wyoming produced 14,475,431 bbl. of oil, a gain of 1,001,081 bbl. over the 1935 figure of 13,474,350. This increase, in the main, was due to the taking of light oil from the newly developed Sundance sand pool at Lance Creek, and from the new fields, Quealy and Medicine Bow, which contributed their first production this year. Most of the other old fields either were partly shut in in competition with the new fields, or showed a normal decline. This was especially noticeable in the black-oil fields, where production had been slowly but steadily increasing for a number of years. During 1936 black-oil production decreased approximately 100,000 bbl. as compared to 1935. The only black-oil field to show marked increase was Garland, which managed to take the market from less favorably located fields. The production of Wyoming in 1936 was 11,358,757 bbl. of light oil and 3,116,674 bbl. of black oil. Salt Creek, with a production of 6,015,000 bbl., is still the largest single oil-producing field, accounting for 42 per cent of the year's total production. Lance Creek, an old field, with newly developed production in the Sundance sand, reached second place this year for the first time in its history, with a production of 1,878,486 bbl. Lance Creek production will almost equal that of Salt Creek in 1937, if the present rate of production is maintained during the coming year. Oregon Basin, a large black-oil field, held second place in 1935, but owing to a greatly lessened demand for its production, dropped back to third place in 1936. Every new mining district has had its own peculiar experiences in inventing and experimenting upon new methods for the various operations of mining, and more particularly in the processes of crushing and dressing ores. As a matter of course, during this period many old things have been reinvented, patented, and cast aside, there to remain until at a future day other geniuses shall bring them forth again as new. In this respect the Copper Region of Michigan has not been behind other mining centres, and probably in no other part of the country has more money been expended in devising new machines and improvements upon old ones for the crushing of the rock. The appliances for washing the sand have not been so varied, simply for the reason that, having but one mineral, or rather metal, of high specific gravity to separate from rock material which varies but little in its character in any one mine, it requires much less care than is necessary in most mining centres of the world. At the beginning of operations in that district most of the work was in the control of Cornish miners, who introduced the simplest of Cornish mills, namely, wooden stem pestles, with wooden shafts and cams. These were well suited to the small mines, and particularly to the limited means of transporting more expensive machinery. As these facilities improved, they were enabled to change to iron, and to vary their patterns of rods, shafts, cams, and mortars. The most approved pattern, finally obtained, is the square or round stem, with collar adjustable by means of keys. In its present form it is a bar of cold rolled shafting, an eye in the top, an adjustable collar with key-plate and keys, the head and a shoe of chilled iron. The stem is fitted into the head by a slight taper. The battery has heretofore been of wood, lined with chilled cast plates, and bed-plate of the same, but within the past year the California pattern has been introduced. The screens are of sheet-steel, drilled with 16 holes to the inch. During this period of trial and gradual improvement in the pestle stamps, in the years 1855-6, the Ball steam-stamps were introduced, and after years of labor and expense, have been made the most efficient and powerful machines ever yet used for the purpose. Up to the present time, the terminus of the Lehigh Valley Railroad has been at Phillipsburg, N. J., opposite Easton, passengers connecting there with New York by the Morris and Essex (D. L. and W.) and New Jersey Central lines; freight and coal being forwarded by the Morris and Essex to tide-water at Hoboken, and by the Central Railroad to Elizabethport and Port Johnson ; also, by the Belvidere and Delaware connections through Trenton to South Amboy.

Much has been written about the energy fuels including their standing with respect to reserves, their delivered Btu costs, their potential in the electrical generating market and their capabilities to meet a burgeoning demand. Yet, when all factors are placed in their proper perspective, the spiraling electrical energy market alone should guarantee each fuel a better than average market for the foreseeable future. In fact, a study made by the U.S. Federal Power Commission on the spare capacity utilities have on hand indicated that 39 of the 181 major utility systems had less than 10% reserves on hand at the end of 1969. Fuel supplies are critically low in some areas, especially in the Southeast, South Central and Midwest areas of the U.S. In other systems equipment shortages resulting from faulty equipment or delays in getting new equipment deliveries causes power failures during peak loads. In addition, lack of labor curtails the erection of some new facilities and prevents many other facilities from operating at capacity.

The discovery of the auriferous cement gravel deposits in and near Deadwood Gulch, Lawrence County, Dakota Territory, in 1876, created a mining excitement, and rush to the Black Hills. Numerous ten and twenty-stamp mills were built on Deadwood Gulch; Central City and the town of Deadwood sprang into existence, and became the centres of the mining industry of the Hills. Gold quartz deposits were subsequently discovered and located on a so-called mineral belt, extending from Whitewood Creek on the south, to Deadwood Gulch on the north. A northerly group of these quartz locations was purchased in December, 1877, by parties in San Francisco, who formed a company, incorporated under the name of the Father de Smet Consolidated Gold Mining Company. This company immediately commenced the work of exploration The deposits were proved to be extensive, and easily mined, but it was found that the ore, on an average, would not yield more than $10.00 per ton* of 2000 pounds. • At this trine the cost of supplies and materials in the Hills was high. Miners' wages were $3.50 per diem, and custom mills charged $6.00 per ton. The successful working of mines on "the belt" necessitated cheap milling. Wrought Hadfield steel was tested in axial tension at from 100° to —196°C, to determine flow and fracture stresses as well as conventional properties. Ductility and related properties, such as fracture stress, decreased continuously with temperature. Peculiarities during straining indicated possible martensite formation or mechanical twinning. THE mechanical properties of austenitic manganese steel have been summarized by Avery and Day,' including the low temperature tensile properties reported by Hadfield and coworkers2,3 " These data show the material to be brittle at both liquid oxygen and liquid 'hydrogen temperatures. Avery and Day report considerable ductility measured by Charpy V-notch tests at —100°F (-73°C). Since the review of low temperature properties by Seigle and Brick' show face-centered cubic structures, other than Hadfield steel, to be ductile at low temperatures, it was felt that a study of tensile properties, between the reported intervals, should show whether the decrease in ductility was a gradual decline or an abrupt drop beginning at some intermediate point. X-ray examinations were made in an attempt to shed further light on the mechanism of work hardening of austenitic manganese steel. The presence of a magnetic constituent has been found by Hall" and by Avery, Homerberg, and Cook." Krivobok7 demonstrated the growth of magnetic constituents on reheating cold-worked specimens. Hadfield2,3 ' and Goss found no a iron. The steel from which the specimens were taken was commercial hot rolled % in. diam rod of electric furnace steel.
