TIE Pioneer mining district, better known as the Superior district, from its principal town, is located in Pinal County in south-central Arizona about 80 miles east of Phoenix and 22 miles west of Miami. The average elevation is about 2800 ft. in the valleys and the summits of the ranges reach 2000 ft. above this. Superior is situated on the north bank of Queen Creek where it emerges from one of those ranges into a more or less basin-shaped valley. The drainage of Queen Creek is to the southwest and the flood waters spread out and lose themselves in the desert northeast of Florence, the county seat of Pinal County.

THE introduction of the tungsten-carbide bit and the single-use bit to the mining industry has had far-reaching effects on the advancement of drilling techniques. Six years of testing these new bits has disclosed new factors not previously considered. The mining industry, which is ordinarily slow to change, has accepted the new methods of drilling as a possible relief for the reduced manpower available to the mines. In 1950 an extensive program of testing was begun at the Calloway mine of the Tennessee Copper Co. to gather data on rock-drill bits and drill steel: When these tests are concluded the information should be sufficient to establish a drilling program. The scope of this article is a progress repor the years 1950 and 1951. The deposits of the Ducktown, Tenn. mining district are massive sulphide replacement lenses in folded and metamorphosed Cambrian schists and graywackes. The primary ore consists of pyrrhotite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite with minor amounts of zinc blende, bornite, specularite, magnetite, quartz, chlorite, and iron-magnesium-lime silicates. The deposits are high-temperature hydrothermal replacements. The drilling conditions vary from a hard highly siliceous rock to the softer material of the ore body, thereby giving a range of hardnesses to be considered. Single-Use Bits Test work was done first on two single-use bits to determine life expectancy, costs, rate rate of penetration, gage wear, and ease of use. Batcheller, we are able to give the following extracts from a letter written by Mr. Caetani: It has been a nice idea of yours to collect for me all those scraps of news I received a few days ago and to send me such a long interesting letter. In four years war I have had practically no news. Burch wrote several times but several of his letters were lost and so mine. I believe I even wrote to you. Much has changed since our last days in Telluride; here and there many have disappeared. Of myself I will tell you in a few words: for a year I was in Cadore(?), where I had the good luck to do to the others what they wished to do to me, and had good luck on my side. Then I went to Macedonia for 5 months, did little fighting but lost my faithful fellow officer and companion.

Mrs. W. Y. Westervelt, Director of the New York Section, reports an interesting meeting at her house- on May 12. Dr. Cecile Griel, special worker of the division for work among foreign-born women of the National Board of the Y. W. C. A., spoke. As the Americanization Committee under Mrs. Scobey is planning an energetic campaign, Dr. Griel's stirring appeal was timely and suggestive. While Dr. Griel cited the usual avenues of approach to our alien population through the school children, the needs of the baby, sewing classes, English classes, etc., her especial appeal was for correct psychology on the part of the workers. She deplored the condescension, implied or expressed, so often manifest in persons attempting Americanism, work and emphasized many times the importance of an understanding heart and mind. At the close Mrs. Scobey brought forward plans for practical work to be done by the New York women, of which I hope to give some details next month.

Sublevel stoping was first developed in the Michigan iron mines many years ago. Since that time this method, and modifications with long hole drilling, have been used in a number of non-ferrous mines and have been described in various papers and articles. With a few exceptions, the operations where sublevel methods have been applied are producers of large daily tonnages from ore bodies of considerable size. In selecting mining methods for small properties or relatively small detached ore bodies, sublevel methods often have been overlooked. The method has been used success- fully in relatively small operations at Copper Canyon, Nevada, and, more recently, in mining small ore bodies at Darwin, Calif. As a result of this experience, we believe that a review of the general procedure, the advantages noted, and the results obtained will be of interest to many operators of relatively small mines.

In the May 1959 issue of [=] the authors reported on the gyrotheodolite as used for determining azimuths in surface and underground work. Further research has led to the development of a new type of gyro instrument, the band-suspended gyro attachment, which is essentially an upset gyro attached to the top of a theodolite. The new gyro attachment is light enough to be mounted on any angle-measuring instrument if the design of the telescope standard permits. Gyrotheodolite units have been used to transfer meridian lines underground in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, although they have not been used extensively in the U.S. In other parts of the world, however, they have been adopted as the standard surveying instrument by mining engineers.

At a large meeting of the members of the American Fund for French Wounded it which Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt presided and at which Mrs. B. Girault Lathrop, President of the Paris Administration A. F.F. W., gave a most interesting address, special rows of seats were reserved for the members of the W. A. A. I. M. E. Those who were unable to be present will be glad to hear that Mrs. Lathrop complimented our organization on having supplied the largest dispensary operated by the A. F. F. W. and the Red Cross in northern France. The A. F. F. W. is going to erect an American Memorial Hospital at Rheims and it is hoped that the one hundred beds in the hospital will be endowed in memory of the men who gave their lives for the liberty of the world. It will be possible not only to endow beds, for which sums of $6000 each are needed, but also to give, as. memorials, sun- parlors at a cost of $10,000 each, two roof gardens at $5000 each, a laundry at $10,000 and a garage at $10,000. The New York Section has undertaken to endow a heel in memory of members of the A. I. M. E. who gave their lives in the Great War. Perhaps other Sections or groups of Sections may wish to do the same thing, or if no other Section cares to assume so much responsibility possibly individuals may like to join the fund already growing in New York, in which case they should send their contributions to Mrs. W. Y. Westervelt, 1 Lexington Ave., New York, N. Y.

Small-scale mines are today expected to provide much of the increased production of metals and coal this county demands. But in fact the category of larger mines tends to grow in number and size faster than the category of smaller mines. Larger mines show the highest productivity, the lowest injury frequency, and the lowest costs. Lower cutoff grades can be wed in larger mines. The paper describes how the production level affects the choice between different types of loading, haulage, and hoisting equipment; how the increased production level in a mine results in lower production costs per ton; and how this affects the profitability of mining deposits with various ore grades. The future trend is expected to favor larger and larger operations.

Solutions to the diffusion equation for a line source located anywhere in a region bounded by a circular discontinuity are presented. Such solutions follow automatically from the Green&apos;s function presented by Jaeger.4 Petroleum industry applications of this problem would include transient compressible fluid flow in porous media bounded by a discontinuity. Since several recent papers have treated the subject in less general form, it would appear that many workers in this area of the petroleum industry are not aware of Jaeger&apos;s work. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM In several trearments1,2,3 of the transient flow of compressible fluids in porous media it was convenient to consider a region to be bounded by a circular discontinuity. In such a region (Fig. I), the properties in Region 1, r < a, are constant but different from the properties in Region 2, r > a. Hurst, l using the Laplace transform, obtained solutions for a line source located in the center of such a porous medium. The purpose of this work is to point out that a much earlier paper by Jaeger4 presents the solution for a line source located anywhere inside the discontinuity. The assumption is made that a line source may be used to approximate a well. In the following material it is convenient to use the terms source and well as being equivalent; however, the reader should remember the distinction in applications. THE observations here following are the result of an examination made as to the feasibility of extending the South Mountain Railroad from Pine Grove to Waynesborough, and of the commercial value of the ore through which such extension would be made to pass. The road at present built and in operation has a junction with the Cumberland Valley Railroad, half a mile east of Carlisle, and extends southward to Pine Grove, a distance of 176 miles. The extension proposed will add to it near 27 miles, making its total length 44$, more than 23 of which will run through, or in close proximity to, beds of ore. The oil shales of the Green River formation were deposited in an inland lake which contained abundant plant and animal life. A high percentage of sodium bicarbonate existed in the lower water layers. Digestion of the kerogen-rich mud accumulating on the lake floor lowered the pH of the interstitial waters and precipitated the sodium minerals dawsonite and nahcolite in the kerogen-rich mud. After about five million years of existence, uplift of land areas around the lake caused an influx of clastic sediments which filled up the lake. Continued tectionics gently folded the basin and caused fracturing of the kerogen-lean oil shale. Nahcolite existing in the fractured lean oil shale was dissolved by subsurface waters leaving a tremendous aquifer in a portion of the oil shale. The extent and porosity of the "Leached zone" aquifer is dependent upon the percent of kerogen and nahcolite originally deposited in the oil shale.

Meramec Mining Co., a joint venture of Bethlehem Steel Corp. and St. Joe Minerals Corp., mines and pelletizes iron ore at the Pea Ridge mine. The Pea Ridge property is located near Sullivan, Miss., about 113 km (70 miles) southwest of St. Louis. The ore body was delineated in the mid-1950&apos;s by St. Joe during a lead exploration program. The first test holes drilled on the Pea Ridge magnetic anomaly revealed the presence of a large magnetite deposit; further drilling in 1956 and 1957 confirmed that the ore body was mineable. Meramec Mining Co. was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began late in the year. Production began in April 1964. The ore body is overlain by about 400 m (1300 ft) of flat-bedded sediments. It is tabular, about 800 m (2600 ft) long and up to 180 m (1600 ft) thick. It dips about 80° and is of unknown depth. The ore is mainly high-grade magnetite with small zones of specular hematite. The wall rock is a Precambrian rhyolite porphyry.
