Although the extractive metallurgist has not yet tackled the problem of getting blood out of a stone, he must, when faced with the mini- metal values of today's ores, believe that this ultimate miracle will soon be expected of him. Even assuming that some plausible professor at one of the few remaining minerals industry schools could persuade the National Science Foundation to sponsor such a sanguine research project, the funds might have to go begging for want of a graduate metallurgist. Falling enrollment in fields devoted to nonrenewable mineral resources, long a matter of grave concern to educators, is now recognized as a problem of great national consequence urgently needing a solution. While the law of supply and demand might eventually be expected to right the imbalance of engineers, time is not on our side and action to correct the shortage is required now.

The distribution of silicon between liquid silver and Fe-Si-C alloys has been studied at 1420oand 1530°C. The data are consistent with earlier studies. New data of Hager on the liquidus lines of the system Ag-Si and the distribution data are used to obtain the activity coefficient of silicon in both liquid phases. Data on the heat of mixing in iron permit accurate extension to 1600°C. Equilibrium data involving SiO2 and silicon in liquid iron together with revised data on the free energy of SiO2 are used to fix the activity of silicon in the infinitely dilute solution. The binary system exhibits strong negative deviation from ideality. At infinite dilution ? Si at 1600" is 1.25 x 10'3, and at concentrations up to NSi = 0.4 the slope d InySi/dNSi has a constant value of r; = 13. It is found that logysi in the ternary solutzon is approximately but not exactly the same function of Nsi + NC as of NSi in the binary. The results are consistent with currently available data on the free energy of Sic and its solubility in molten iron. LIQUID solutions of the system Fe-Si-C have acquired considerable importance as the laboratory prototypes of blast furnace hot metal. Equilibrium studies involving such solutions and slags approximating those of the blast furnace have yielded useful information concerning the thermodynamic properties of blast furnace slags. In studies of this kind great importance attaches to a knowledge of the thermodynamic activity of silicon in the solution as a function of temperature and composition. An attempt was made by Chipman, Fulton, Gokcen, and askey' to evaluate all of the pertinent data on this system and to deduce the desired relation between activity, composition, and temperature. These authors published data on the solubility of graphite and Sic in molten Fe-C-Si solutions and on the distribution of silicon between liquid iron and liquid silver. They showed further how the activity of silicon in very dilute solutions in liquid iron could be calculated from equilibrium data involving the molten alloy and solid SiO,. These calculations rested on the published thermodynamic properties of SiO, in- cluding its heat of formation which at that time was recorded as -209.8 kcal. This value has been under suspicion for some time and has recently been replaced by the concordant results from two independent laboratories2,3 which place the heat of formation of a-quartz at -217.6 kcal. This revision necessitates a re-evaluation not only of the activity of SiO2 in slag but also of silicon in molten iron. It is the purpose of this paper, therefore, to recalculate the activity of silicon, and in furtherance of this objective to present new data on its distribution between liquid Fe-Si-C alloys and liquid silver. HEAT OF SOLUTION OF SILICON IN IRON In order to determine the effect of temperature upon the activity coefficient it is necessary to know the heat of solution of silicon in iron as a function of composition. This is found in the data of Korber and Oelsen4 shown in Fig. 1. The curve corresponds to the following equation, which is of a form suggested by Wagner:5 Here AH is the heat absorbed in kilocalories in forming one gram atom of molten alloy from its molten elements and the N's are atom fractions. The relative partial molal enthalpies of the components, each referred to its pureliquid state and defined as zFe = aFe - PFe and zsi = HSi — -psi, are shown graphically. At low concentrations zSi = -28.5 kcal, in agreement with Kijrber and Oelsen's computation. This is in good agreement with the value of -29.3 kcal obtained by Chipman and Grant6 using an entirely different method. ACTIVITY AT INFINITE DILUTION From the known free energy of SiO, it is possible to obtain the activity of silicon in dilute solution in liquid iron from equilibrium studies. The heat of formation of a-quartz is —217.6 kcal and the heat capacity and entropy data are given by Kelley and ~ing.' The free energy of formation of ß-cristo-balite at temperatures above the melting point of silicon is expressed by the following equation: Si(Z) + O2(g) = SiO2 (crist); AF" =-226,500 + 47.50T [I] The value of the deoxidation product for silicon [%Si] x [%O]2 at 1600°C according to Gokcen and chipmans is 2.8 x 10"5, in agreement with results of Hilty and Crafts.9 More recent works of Matoba,

The Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory at North Carolina State University is engaged mainly in applied nonmetallic mineral processing research to assist the North Carolina mining industry. The laboratory helped to bring the flotation process to North Carolina feldspar. spodumene, mica and phosphate producers and it maintains a versatile batch and pilot plant. The conservation of mineral resources through improved processing methods has been the object of most of the laboratory's projects. Current laboratory work is sponsored by three feldspar companies, the State of North Carolina, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This work is aimed at reducing the amounts of feldspar tailings in the Spruce Pine area. Mineral dressing techniques are applied to these tails to reclaim salable mineral products such as feldspar, mica, quartz, and to make a more uniform material for possible ceramic and other applications.

Since start-up in 1906, Bingham had been a rail pit, beginning with steam locomotives and converting to electric locomotives in 1923. Ore production was maintained by effective utilization of avail- able rail equipment. From time to time, as it became necessary to deepen the pit and as stripping ratios increased, studies of alternative material haulage systems such as diesel locomotives, conveyor belts and trucks were made. Conversion from rail haulage with electric locomotives could not, however, be justified. Because of a gradual decline in ore grade, a program was approved in 1963 to raise ore production to 108,000 tpd. The decision posed a serious problem: due to built-in inflexibility and other limitations, a parallel expansion of the rail haulage system was impractical. (Track and trolley wire relocation causes greater shovel downtime than required for normal maintenance; instability of the dumps and the resulting additional track maintenance increases greatly as the daily volume of waste material increases.) Studies indicated that economically the most favorable course of action would be the replacement of rail haulage on the upper levels of the mine by truck haulage.

SUMMARY A detailed analysis of nickel, copper, and cobalt recovery from manganese nodules shows simple rates of return of 9-15% in 1985. A sulfur dioxide roast process yields a slightly better return than an ammonia leach technique. Nodule tonnage predictions tend to be over-optimistic and more conservative forecasts show that market penetrations are only significant for cobalt and manganese. However, cobalt prices are unlikely to fall to the level of nickel. Between now and 1985, cobalt is expected to be in balanced to tight availability. INTRODUCTION Deep-ocean manganese nodules are one- to two-inch concretions which cover 2040% of large areas of the ocean bottom. Commercial targets far these black, potato-like nodules are located in the North Pacific at water depths of 5,000-6,000 m. in a belt roughly midway between Hawaii and Mexico. However, good grade nodules are not solely limited to this belt as areas southwest and northwest of Hawaii, as well as in the Indian Ocean, contain concentrations of acceptable grade manganese nodules. Some 90% of the nodules are found half-buried on the deep ocean bottom. A siliceous-ooze host soil combined with low sedimentation rates, certain ocean currents, and possible geo- thermal effects are favorable factors far nodule formation. Improved safety, economy, and flexibility-which translate into increased productivity-promote the case for greater utilization of diesel-powered equipment in underground coal mines. On the other hand, opponents of diesel use say that the alleged health hazards are not worth it. Who's right? The continuing debate was the focus of a special "Diesels in Underground Coal Mining" session held during the SME-AIME Fall Meeting in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., last September. Looking at the record to date, there are more than 20,000 diesel-powered units operating in underground mines throughout the world; more than 1000 are in Western European coal mines and 10,000 such units are in North American mines. Surprisingly, of the 10,000 North American units, only 200 are utilized in US underground coal mines.

In view of the great interest now taken in the tests of castiron and details of foundry practice, with the number of investigators at work, and recent improvements in the methods of research, it would seem that the time is ripe to attempt the solution of some of the many problems with which iron founders have to contend. Recent papers and discussions on these subjects* have opened up s large field for investigation, and have emphasized the importance of many considerations generally overlooked. With the view of promoting a comprehensive and systematic discussion, I have attempted to tabulate, in conveilient form, some of the most important points for investigation, on the general plan suggested, with such good results, by our former President, H. M. Howe, for the discussion on the Physics of Steel, at the Virginia Beach meeting, last year. This table can, no doubt, be modified or enlarged to advantage, and put in shape to serve as a guide or reminder to all who are interested in this line of work. INTRODUCTION The production of fines is an unwanted side-effect in most crystallization processes. The definition of “fines" is relative to the size of the desired product and varies from <30 mesh for coarse KC1 fertilizers to subsieve organic material produced by salting-out pro- cesses. Sometimes a well-developed fines distribution is necessary in the production of large crystals, e.g. the fines removal stream from a potash crystallizer. The production of fines is usually not desired in a crystallization separation step. However, product purity can either improve or degenerate with a decrease in crystal size depending on the relative importance of product washing vs mother liquor occlusions in determining over-all purity. Typically, both washing efficiency and mother liquor occlusions decrease with decreasing particle size. Fine crystal distributions have historically been difficult to measure and categorize; however this situation is changing rapidly with the use of electronic particle counters of the electrical zone- sensing or light scattering type. In fact, fine-crystal measurement is perhaps the key to better understanding and control of coarse- crystal crystallization processes. The fine-crystal distribution carries much useful information from which nucleation and growth rates can be inferred. The purpose of this paper is to briefly discuss a few crystallization processes in which production and/or measurement of fines is important and to categorize the process conditions which yield a fine- crystal product.

THE growth of and profession depends on meeting and solving new problems. It is a continuous process. &apos;A period free from new, or hitherto unknown, questions will be a period of arrested development in the profession it affects. The present generation has witnessed a&apos; mechanical development that has been truly marvelous: Almost every day marks the advent of a new, or the improvement of an old; process, method or machine. Wonders are now commonplace. The impossible is regularly accomplished. Yet, with all our progress in every realm of science and with our development in the engineering field, advances which have made possible the marvelous growth in industry, we have not made commensurate gains in methods affecting the human factor. Without the cooperation of the worker, we shall always fall short of our goal in a mechanical or statistical sense. If we do not make the individual members of the human family strong, healthy, happy, and ambitious for better things for themselves and their children, we will have failed utterly, for that is the real reason for our existence as men and the purpose of our organized effort as an engineering group. AN extremely successful meeting, under the joint auspices of the Ohio Section and the Iron and Steel Committee, was held at Cleveland on April 19 and 20, about one-half of those in attendance being from the Cleveland district and the other half from a distance. The morning session on April 19, C. K. Leith presiding, was opened by the presentation of the ad-dress of which an excerpt is printed on the opposite page. In the subsequent discussion R. A. Allen pointed out that the meeting had not been called "to blow the lid off the tariff" since that is only one of the many problems connected with the wisest utilization of man-ganese, and it was the purpose of this meeting to con-sider all those interdependent problems. The purpose of the tariff was to develop an adequate domestic sup-ply, and that result had not been accomplished. An-other important problem, linked with the tariff, is the need for assuring, while we are at peace, an adequate war supply of manganese, and at present this country has no such policy. D. F. Hewett said that his 3-months&apos; trip in Europe last summer had impressed him with the fact that England had once been in the position United States now is in, of being the principal world&apos;s producer of all the more important minerals and with a declining reserve had gone on a free-trade basis. No one pointed out that, with the exception of tin, the present relative position of England is due more to an increase in pro-duction in other countries, rather than to a decrease of domestic production. J. Sharshall Grasty referred to recent development work-in Virginia where of 30 per cent easily concen-trated manganese ore about 300,000 tons has been blocked out and possible and probable ore amounting to 700,000 tons more is indicated.

IN the study of the rolling recrystallization of face-centered-cubic metals, a most unusual observation is the frequent occurrence of a sharp re-crystallization texture of cube orientation. Although the general conditions under which this texture occurs are known,2,3 its origin is still not well understood. Based on the observed relationship between the {110}<112> deformation texture and the (113}<211> recrystallization texture, regardless of the effect of alloying elements2,4,5 or the symmetry of the deformation texture,&apos; there is a strong indication that a specific component of the deformation texture is related to a specific component of the recrystallization texture. Using the rotational reorien-tation relationship as a means of correlating the deformation and recrystallization textures, it was proposed that the deformation component which related the cube texture has {358)<523> indices."&apos; The investigation reported here was undertaken to seek experimental evidence for the validity of this proposition. Experimental Procedure Two copper single crystals having an initial orientation within 2" of (358) [523] indices were prepared in the manner described in Ref. 5. The purity of the copper was between 99.94 and 99.97 pct. The original dimensions of the crystals were as follows: specimen A, 0.465 in. thickness, 0.844 in. width, and 0.955 in. length; specimen B, 0.535 in. thickness, 1.120 in. width, and 1.36 in. length: Rolling was done on a laboratory rolling mill according to the following schedule: 0.010 in. per pass to 50 pct reduction in thickness, 0.005 in. per pass to 70 pct reduction inthickness, 0.002 in. per pass to 85 pct reduction in
