T HE 121st meeting of the Institute held in New York City, February 16 to 19, 1920, was a great success despite vicissitudes of weather of unusual severity. On account of tremendous snowstorms, only two members of the Canadian contingent arrived, and several of our members from the west arrived thirty hours late. Two weeks prior to the meeting, the heaviest snowstorm in 34 years wrecked the surface transportation in New York; and it was only by special dispensation that arrangements were effected, with the New York Street Cleaning Department to clear away 39th street in front of this building so that vehicles could reach the curb. The total registration of members and guests was 1138.

THE geologic structure of the Idaho phosphate field has an important bearing on the classifica-tion and the exploitation of the lands that contain phosphate. Maps and structure sections1 recently made available show that the phosphate is mainly preserved in downfolded or downfaulted areas. Since the phos- phate beds are generally rather soft and lie between harder and thicker formations they have been forced to adjust themselves to these formations during epochs of disturbance of the earth's crust, so that they are frequently affected by minor folds and by faults which may help exploitation by producing undue thickness at certain places or may hinder it by cutting out the phosphate at other places where according to expecta-tion it should be present. A particularly important structural feature which affects both the distribution and the exploitation of the phosphate beds is the great Bannock overthrust by which one or more slices or blocks of the earth's crust have been pushed over other blocks like ice cakes on a pond. Thus in this region a great flap of folded rocks lies across other rock structures for a distance of approximately 35 miles. Most of the commercially accessible phosphate deposits, shown in the maps that accompany the report cited, are in this flap, which con-stitutes the upper block of the overthrust. In some places, however, the phosphate in the lower block is also accessible. In both blocks post-phosphate rocks exposed at the surface here and there indicate that phos-phate beds may lie at greater or less depth below. The presence of the Bannock overthrust beneath much of the area reported is known by the occurrence of windows in the upper block both within the quadrangles mapped and in areas farther west. The portions of the lower block exposed in these windows show stratigraphic dis-cordance with the surrounding formations. The depth of the fault plane at most places, however, can be told only by drilling or actual mining. Some of the folds in the upper block are relatively deep and it seems fairly certain that the phosphate that may originally have been present in their deeper parts has been removed by thrust faulting. The estimates of phosphate reserves in folds liable to be affected by the Bannock overthrust may therefore need ultimate revision depending on the depth of this fault plane, as it may subsequently be ascertained.

COMMENCING in 1922, each year a lecture has been presented to the Institute of Metals Division at this February meeting. The range of subjects has been very broad. Some speakers have dealt with the most advanced work in the very heart of the science of physical metallurgy. Others have stimulated our imaginations by discussing the most recent progress in related fields of science. Others have told us of the latest art, which is at any moment of greater practical importance than the latest science, of metals. I feel that this broad precedent in the choice of subjects will justify my choosing to talk about some of the prosaic details of how, during the last generation, industry has effectively organized research to accelerate progress in our own and all other fields of science and related art. A number of years ago I visited one of this country's well-known research laboratories and had the pleasure of chatting for a few minutes with its equally well-known director. Being particularly interested at the time in the organization problems connected with industrial research, I broached that subject. My host stated in effect that he didn't believe in organized research. He was, of course, resorting to a rhetorical hyperbole to point out the danger of overorganization which can so easily drift into regimentation and destroy individual initiative. Actually nearly all of us, much as we cherish our personal freedom of action, believe in organization because the history of progress in every field of human activity has been a history of men learning to work together, to cooperate, to create an efficient division of labor. We use organization to achieve this coordination. At the same time our form of organization must not stifle individual initiative or it will prove a deterrent rather than an aid to accomplishment. Research, too, must be organized for greatest achievement but especial skill and care are perhaps needed to avoid stifling the initiative of the individual workers. I have, of course, followed with keen interest and much benefit the vast amount that has been said and written on this subject in the past twenty years but I still find new stimulation in discussions with my good friends working in this field. It is my hope that this discussion may serve a like purpose. It would be ungracious not to make due acknowledgment to the many able contributors to this particular phase of human progress, but their very number and the great volume of their writing makes it impossible to trace to any one individual a particular significant and valuable idea. I shall content myself therefore with this general acknowledgment and with acknowledgment of the specific debt that every research man owes to those who have so ably kept before the public, and in particular before industrial executives, the place of research in the modern scheme of things. Secondary Twinning. - When there is reason to believe that the twinning has been produced subsequently to the original formation of the crystal, or crystalline mass, as, for example, by pressure, it is said to be secondary. Thus the calcite grains of a crystalline limestone often show such secondary twinning lamella?. The same are occasionally observed (Ilc, 001) in pyroxene crystals. Further, the polysynthetic twinning of the triclinic feldspars is often secondary in origin. This subject is further discussed on a later page, where it is also explained that in certain cases twinning may be produced artificially in a crystal individual - e.g., in calcite (see Art. 282).

THE classification and preparation of non-ferrous scrap metals is a subject of interest to every individual and corporation that employs in its processes of manufacture non-ferrous metals and alloys and accumulates in such manufacture scrap from these materials for disposition in the form of turnings, borings, short ends, punchings, clippings, grindings, washings, etc. All too frequently the disposition of such scrap is left to individuals who have no knowledge of the subject either from a metallurgical or a commercial standpoint, or both. Much money is thus lost which with a little more intelligent effort might be saved, and in this day of fierce competition and small profits such an opportunity cannot be ignored. Does mine-sampling show the commercial value of a coal, and if so, how should it be done? This question is often asked, but seldom answered. During the past summer, while engaged in securing coal for the Government coal-testing plant at St. Louis, I had an excellent opportunity to obtain information on this subject, and the results seem to furnish an answer to the questions propounded above. Sampling for the Geological Survey Coal-Testing Plant. In organizing the work of the testing-plant, it was decided that coal in car-load lots only would be accepted for testing, also that this coal should be loaded under the immediate supervision of a representative of the plant, so as to be certain that the car-load sample would be representative. As an additional check on the work, two mine-samples were to be collected from each mine visited, and these samples, as well as the sam¬ple from the car when it was received at the testing-plant, were to be carefully analyzed at the chemical laboratory, which was established in connection with the plant and operated under the direction of Prof. N. W. Lord, of the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Mine-Sanmhling:-Mine-samples were collected with great care by me and my assistants, Messrs. J. Shober Burrows, John W. Groves and Frank W. De Wolf. The dominant idea in the regulations which were adopted for mine-sampling was that it should be done in such a manner that the sample would have the same composition as the commercial output of the mine. .

MANY methods for the determination of gold or silver, or both, in cyanide solutions have been published, which with care in manipulation, and modification in some cases, will give results that are satisfactory. It is possible to classify or group these methods as follows: 1. Evaporating the solution in a porcelain or agate-ware dish containing litharge,1 or in a "boat" made of lead foil. 2. Forming a lead sponge containing the precious metals by means of zinc shavings,2 zinc dust,3 or a piece of aluminum.4 3. Decomposing the cyanide solution with an acid and precipitating the precious metals by the use of one or a combination of some of the following: Copper sulphate,5 sodium sulphite,6 hydrogen sulphide,7 cement copper.8 4. Precipitating the silver by zinc dust held in a Hooch crucible and determination with a standard solution of sulphocyanate.9 5. Electrolysis.10 6. Colorimetry.11

This report on the Central mining district of New Mexico is the partial culmination of an intensive U.S. Geological Survey effort dating back some 30 years. Robert M. Hernon went to Silver City in 1948 to finish a detailed restudy of the district that had been started in the thirties by Samuel G. Lasky. He was joined by William R. Jones in 1951, and Jones took over as project chief when Hernon resigned to do consulting work in 1953; it was under Jones' guidance that most of the work was brought to completion or nearly so ( 17, 22-24, 26-30). Hernon returned to the Survey in 1958 to work in .the southern Appalachians. Early in 1965 Jones urged that Hernon be reassigned to the Silver City project to help complete the Professional Paper report on the ore deposits of the Santa Rita quadrangle as well as to take over preparation of the report on the Central district for the Graton-Sales volume. This reassignment was approved, and Hernon began work on the present report. By late June he had completed most of it in draft form, and on June 28 Jones and Hernon left Denver for a short trip to Silver City to fill in a few gaps and to reacquaint Hernon with activities in the district, which he had not visited for 12 years. Late in the afternoon of June 29, 1965, as Bob and Bill were 85 miles short of their destination, their jeep collided head-on with a truck that was attempting to pass another vehicle in a cloud of dust. They both died instantly. As the most recent surviving member of the Silver City project (1958-1962), I was given the honorable though rather sorrowful task of putting the Hernon-Jones report "in shape" for publication. Fortunately the manuscript was already in good shape, so that the task has consisted of little more than minor reorganization and editing, and of preparation of the illustrations, abstract, and bibliography. The sections on wall-rock alteration had been left for Jones to complete in the light of his recently intensified interest in alteration geochemistry (25), and it is in these sections only that. the report may fall short, for they have been filled in from a 1958 manuscript by Jones on the ore deposits of the Santa Rita quadrangle that he intended to revise considerably. The shortcomings, however, are largely in the interpretation, not in the field data. As a brief but accurate summary of what was known about the geology of the Central mining district in 1965, this report stands as a fitting testimonial to the scientific dedication of two exceptional men.

The report of which this paper is a summary was made in 1890 for the Compania Investigadora Mexicana y Americana. Since the region examined covers 900 sq. kilom., chiefly of wooded arid rocky hills, almost without roads, and for the most part uninhabited, While the examination had to be made in two months, of which period more than 15 days were continuously rainy, I need not say that this account is not complete and thorough. I. Geography and Topography. The center of this zone, 19 kilom. SW. of San Luis Potosi, is situated in lat. 21° 24' N., and long. 2° 3' W. of Mexico City. The altitude ranges from 1866 m. (that of San Luis) to . 2816 m. (that of the Realito mountain), in the Sierra de Sail Luis. The topography is hilly—partly wooded, partly bare. The principal more level areas are the Bledos valley on the south, and portions of the haciendas of Tepetates, San Fran cisco and Santiago, on the west. The water-supply is scanty. The two streams that cross the Zone, the Santiago and Bledos rivers, carry water nearly the year through, though much reduced in the dry season. Other streams are torrents of less importance. All the waters of the valley and Sierra of Sail Luis arc absorbed or sink, not passing beyond Soledad de los Ranchos. The Continental di vide is within the Zone, some waters going west to the Pacific, others east to the Gulf of Mexico. II. Geology. Concerning the geology of this district I condense the fol lowing from the memoir, Las Minas de Guanajuato, prepared for the Minister of Fomento by Senor Pedro Lopez Monroy, mining engineer, with which I am entirely in accord. THE purpose of ore dressing is to separate the rough ore into one or several valuable concentrates and a discarded tailing. The first step is to crush the ore so that the resulting particles may be individually valuable or worthless. The next step generally has to be a sizing operation, because the property by which concentration is effected depends on the size of the in-dividual mineral particles as well as on their physical properties. These two effects may cancel each other if a preliminary sizing is not resorted to. Sizing is accomplished by screening or classifying. Screening depends almost solely on the dimensions of the particles; classifying depends also on the specific gravity of the particles and the viscosity of the settling medium in which the classifying operation is conducted. Classification, therefore, is to a certain extent a con-centrating operation as well as a sizing operation. Before the days of concentration by flotation, the available screens were mechanically poor. As a result classification was employed for sizing in the range. of comparatively coarse sands (table feeds). In recent years, the advent of stage-grinding to flotation size has brought about the development of good screens, which are more economical than classifiers down to about 20, -mesh. With decreasing size at which separation is to be made, screens become increasingly uneconomical, while classifiers become increasingly economical. The line of demarcation between the respective fields of screening .and classification is, therefore, fairly sharp. With the development of processes of concentrating finely comminuted ore, the need for classifiers or other sizing devices operating so as to make efficiently a split at a very fine size has become increasingly apparent. Such classifiers might be termed de-slimers, from the fact that they separate a material having a slimy ap-pearance from one having the characteristics of a sand. Sizing-tests are carried on by means of testing sieves, the finest of which have apertures of about 1/500 of an inch. The 200-mesh sieve, which has an average open-ing of 0.0029 linear inches is generally considered the limit of practical test-sizing. As a result, little is known of minus 200-mesh material and the advantages of classifying concentrator feeds within the minus 200-mesh range has been overlooked. An extension of the -present sieve scale beyond the 200-mesh screen is given in Table 1.

EVEN though the world has not been crying for more copper for the last three or four years there has been some important mill and smelter construction. Discovery and development of large new high-grade copper deposits in Africa has led to the construction of extensive reduction facilities there, prominent among which is the concentrator and smelter of the Rhokana Corporation at N'Kana. Northern Rhodesia. The 3000-ton concentrator adjoins the central shaft. A little over half a mile to the southeast, at an altitude of 40,010 ft., is the smelter, designed on the site by 1. H. Wynne. It is arranged primarily to treat N'Kana copper concentrates, but can also handle concentrates and direct-smelting ore from outside sources. Excavations were started late in 1930; concrete was first poured on Jan. 6. 1931; and the first blister cop¬per was cast on March 1.9, 1932, less than fifteen months later. During this period, which included several months of heavy tropical rains, some 10,000 cu. yd. of concrete was poured and 41000 tons of structural steel erected under the supervision of construction engineer, A. Ek, with a labor force of 60 to 30 Europeans and about 300 natives. The steelwork was fabricated by Head Wrightson & Co. in England, and the boiler plant equipment furnished and erected by the International Combustion Co. Ltd.

Monotonous flood planes flanked either side of the road as we drove in the embassy car from the airport to downtown Seoul. We crossed the brown waters of the Hann River, meandering over mud flats. A great, gnarled tree bore beautiful fall colors of gold. "That is a Ginko Tree, the oldest living fossil, probably a hundred million years old;" said Jean W. Pressler. Compared to other cities of the Far East, the traffic in and around Seoul was sedate. Few motorcycles or bicycles, and little superfluous horn tooting. "This is the best season in Korea. We have long beautiful springs and falls," said Pressler, chief of the mining branch of USAID, and he continued with a briefing on the country.

THE state of Kansas had a daily average crude-oil production of about 87,000 bbl. at the beginning of the year. This showed a steady but consistent decline during the 12 months, so that the daily average production at the end of the year was slightly over 68,000 barrels. GREENWOOD COUNTY THE most active development in Kansas during the year was in Greenwood County, in a line from near Sallyards in T 25-R 9 to east of Madison in T 22-R 11. The main part of this development has been in a succession of pools beginning at the south with the Polhamus pool in 34-24-9 and 3 and 4-25-9; Thrall pool in 28, 29, 32 and 33-23-10; Burkett pool in 13, 23, 24 and 26-23-10; Seeley and Wick pool in 22, 27, 28,. 32 and 33-22-11 and 5, 6, 7, and 8-23-11; Frohm pool in 11, 14 and 15-22-11; Madison pool in 31 and 32-21-12 and 6, 22, 12 and 1-22-11. Some of these pools have two or more sands, locally called Bartlesville and Burgess Sands. They range in depth from 1850 ft. near Madison to 2450 ft. near Sallyards, the general dip being to' the west. The thickness of these sands run from 20 to 100 ft., the initial production of the wells being 50 to 1000 bbl of 40-gravity oil or better.

A study of micro structural characteristics of a 30 pct Cr, 42 pct Ni, 26 pct Fe alloy has been correlated with its behavior in creep and rupture tests at 1400°, 1600°, and 1800°F. Nitrogen pickup observed at 1600" and 1800°F was associated withfissur-ing of specimens prior to fracture. IN studying the high-temperature characteristics of a nominally 30 pct Cr, 42 pct Ni, 26 pct Fe alloy certain anomalies were observed, namely: The alloy had greater stress rupture and creep strength at 1800" than at 1600° F for time periods beyond 550 hr. As placed in test, this alloy was nonmagnetic. After test, some specimens were found to be fairly magnetic. The gain observed in magnetic response was not solely a function of time and temperature of testing. This is a report of the observations and a recounting of the results of studies made in an attempt to explain the behavior of the material under investigation. MATERIAL AND PROCEDURE All test material was taken from a production size heat of an experimental alloy melted and processed using commercial practice and having the following percentage composition: C Fe Cr Ni Ti 0.05 25.83 30.13 41.59 0.41 Al Mn Si S Cu 0.42 0.75 0.45 0.011 0.34 The material was tested in two conditions, namely mill-annealed and grain-coarsened. Mill annealing, which consisted of heating to about 1900° F in a continuous furnace for about 30 min and air cooling, gave a grain size of ASTM 8 and finer. To produce the grain-coarsened condition, mill-annealed material was soaked for 2 hr at 2050°F in a laboratory furnace and air cooled. This resulted in an ASTM grain size of 4 to 5. Rupture tests were carried out at 1400, 1600, and 1800° F in accordance with ASTM procedures. In tests where only rupture life and elongation at fracture were determined, specimens of 0.252 in. diam and 1 in. gage length were used. In tests where creep curves were obtained, specimens were of 0.375 in. diam and 4 in. gage length. Several of the tests under relatively low stress were discontinued short of rupture. Three low-stress tests are still in progress at this writing. Structural changes which occurred during testing were determined from examination of the tested specimens by light microscopy and X-ray diffraction. THE growth of the spirit of progress and mutual aid which motivated the founders of the Institute sixty years ago in Wilkes-Barre was vigorously demonstrated at the sixtieth anniversary meeting held there on May 22. Committees headed by Cadwallader Evans, "resident director" of the Institute, and Paul Sterling, chairman of the local section, had arranged for a full-day tour of the northern anthracite field, so that the hundred and fifty members and guests who had come for the celebration of the anniversary might see the changes and progress made in that field in recent years. More than forty automobiles were in line in the cavalcade which left the Westmoreland Club at nine- thirty. Operations visited were fully described in the May issue of MINING AND METALLURGY, so it is enough to say that after a seventy-five mile drive through the beautiful Susquehanna Valley and over the rolling green hills of northern Pennsylvania a stop was made for lunch at Forest City. Carey, Baxter and Kennedy, contractors at the stripping operations there, had provided, in the shelter of tents, a well-prepared luncheon and other refreshments. The return trip was made by way of Scranton, arriving at Wilkes-Barre at five- thirty.
