A variety of chemicals offered by Armak were evaluated as dewatering aids for aqueous slurries of silica sand, sparsand and feldspar; an established commercial dewatering aid was used as a control. A number of Armak’s potential dewatering aids yielded lower moisture retention values than did the commercial product on all of the mineral samples. In addition to the chemical dewatering evaluations, some of the mechanisms involved in the removal of water from these mineral samples were examined.

EARLIER studies of the dependence of creep on structure1 and of the dependence of creep rupture on creep behavior2 did not include detailed discussion of the phases present in the specimens under examination. It is of interest to determine the nature and amounts of such phases present since it is well known that these are dependent on composition, heat treatment and creep conditions.3 This investigation has therefore been undertaken to identify these constituents and to determine their relative amounts. This report presents the results of this investigation and describes an improved "extraction replica" technique developed in the course of the work. The composition of the Type 316 austenitic stainless steels studied in this investigation is given in Table I. The specimens were solution treated at 2000°F for 1/2 hr and water quenched. Those specimens subjected to prestrain at room temperature Methods for extracting precipitate particles from materials for electron and X-ray diffraction analysis have been described by Fisher,4 Smith and Nutting: and Booker and coworkers.6'7 Electrolytic extraction methods have been described by Andrews and Hughes.8 The first two methods have been used at this Laboratory, but have not proved satisfactory for many problems requiring X-ray diffraction analysis. It has been difficult to remove the replicas or to avoid tearing them during removal. These difficulties are overcome by backing the replica with a water-soluble plastic such as Dupont 51-05 Elvanol (polyvinyl alcohol). The backing increases the thickness of the replica so that it can be mechanically stripped from unloosened particles without folding or tearing. This procedure eliminates the stripping of wet replicas, which usually have a low tear strength. By stripping replicas after drying, it is possible to extract partially loosened particles which otherwise would remain imbedded in the metal. The modified method is as follows: after the specimen is polished, it is etched for 60 min in modified glyceregia consisting of 30 ml glycerol, 7 ml nitric acid, and 4 ml of hydrochloric acid. The sample is then washed, air dried, and coated with a 20 pct Baker and Adamson 1611 collodion (85 pct amyl acetate by volume) film. After the collodion film is dry (about 15 min), the sample is again etched in the modified glyceregia for 50 min, washed with isopropyl alcohol (to prevent dissolving the collodion) and air dried. A very thick coat of polyvinyl alcohol (about 50 pct solution "Elvanol Dupont 51-05" in water) is poured over the sample and is permitted to dry for about 24 hr. The composite film containing the precipitates is then stripped from the specimen and floated, polyvinyl alcohol side down, in water (at about 50°C) until the polyvinyl alcohol dissolves. This usually takes about 15 min. Should any of the polyvinyl alcohol remain on the replica, it does not give a crystalline diffraction pattern and therefore does not hinder identification of the precipitates. The extraction replica, floating in water, is picked up on a glass fiber and mounted in the Debye-Scherrer camera for X-ray diffraction analysis. Concentration of the etchant, and also etching time, had to be increased for several of the samples. Fig. 1 shows two extraction replicas taken from different areas of spec. M74-37; X-ray analysis showed a strong diffraction pattern of M23C6 and a medium one of u phase. A

This paper proposes an unconventional, simple, and practical method of measuring mining-induced ground stresses with hydraulic borehole pressure cells. The method is a direct ground stress measuring technique. It does not require the value of deformation modulus for back-calculation of stresses; instead, it directly measures the ground stress in situ. The applicability and practicality of the technique are shown by two case studies. The technique may be applied to monitoring a stress buildup that may lead to mine roof failure or to rock and coal outbursts.

WITH a realization of the rapidly increasing importance of automatic stokers as a medium for domestic heating, the Anthracite Institute Labo-ratory has conducted extensive investigations, over a period of several years, to determine the various outstanding characteristics of stoker design and performance. The purpose of this paper is to summarize these findings as a guide to current practices. STOKERS INVESTIGATED One or more models of the underfeed stokers listed below were included in the various phases of this investigation: Beckley Gilkoal Burnwell Iron Fireman Combustioneer Motor Stokor Electric Furnace Man Norristown Super-Stoker Erie Heat Generator Whitney Fire Ball (Tests Incomplete.) Fuel Saver Principles of Construction.-The operating principle of the leading makes of underfeed stokers is similar (Fig. 1). A plungers, or slowly revolving worm2, conveys the buckwheat or rice sizes of anthracite to the center of a specially constructed tuyere pot where air is admitted to the coal. through suitable ports of varying design. As the fuel burns, it is slowly forced to the outside circumference of the tuyere by the pressure of the incoming coal; eventually the ash falls over the edge of the pot, either entirely by gravity or aided by mechanical sweepers. In at least one model, the entire firepot revolves. While various special details have been included in the design of a number of stokers, they do not affect the ,general principles as described above, and therefore have not been included in this discussion.

IT has long been common knowledge that workers in anthracite are prone to develop a disabling disease of the lungs. Some of the earliest scientific contributors dealing with anthracosis were: Pearson1, in his report in 1813, on the coloring matter of the bronchial glands and black spots in the lungs; Stratton2, in 1838, who first termed the condition anthracosis; Greenhow3, who reported to the pathological society in 1865, on the Black Lung of the Collier, and Pick4 in 1870, who reported on the chemical composition of the ash of a collier's lungs. Visconti5, in 1870, is accredited with being the first to use the term "silicosis" to denote the pathological condition of the lungs resulting from the inhalation of silica. Rovida6 confirmed the reports of Pick and Visconti in 1871, in his report on a case of silicosis and chemical examination of the lungs for silica content. The relationship of pulmonary infection, as associated with disabling pneumoconiosis affecting the coal miner, has frequently been discussed. While most reports have emphasized the role of infection, there has been some disagreement regarding the prevalence of tuberculosis among those suffering from anthracosis. The report by Wainwright and Nichols7 in 1905 has frequently been cited to show that the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis among coal miners was -less than that among the general population. It was their opinion that pulmonary tuberculosis was more prevalent among the miners' families than among the miners themselves.. Collis and Gil-christ8, in 1928 in their study of the Effects of Dust upon Coal Trimmers, concluded that among such workers there was an excess of deaths from bronchitis and pneumonia but not from pulmonary tuberculosis. [ ] ENGINEERING research consists, broadly speaking, in the investigation of the effect of the variations in a number of factors on some property of a product or characteristic of a process. The unambiguous description of the product or process requires that the property or characteristic be expressible in quantitative terms. For the purpose of practical control, it is likewise desirable that the independently variable factors governing the product or process be quantities, although this ideal goal is not always attained. Maximum efficiency-i.e., the attainment of the maximum amount of reliable, useful information relating to the influence of the factors on the property of the product or characteristic of the process, for the least expense-is an important requirement for the satisfactory operation of a research organization. Obviously, a necessary condition for the attainment of maximum efficiency is an adequate knowledge of the specialized field in which the experimental research lies. While necessary, this condition is not sufficient. Proper attention must also be given to the general principles of experimental design together with the modem methods for the analysis and evaluation of experimental data. The present discussion is confined to a single design, the so-called "factorial" design. This design is of special interest in that it attains its goal, maximum efficiency, by directly departing from the

THE writer's first experience with flotation was during World War I, in the beneficiation of Alabama graphite schist ores. One plant used a cone with a peripheral overflow; dried ore was distributed by a rotating disk onto the surface of the water. No reagents were added. The flake-graphite film floated along with some fine silica. Dewatering screens separated the flake. Naturally unit capacities were low but results were satisfactory. Minerals Separation mechanical flotation machines were used in another graphite mill. Pine oil was added directly to the head cells, with very good results. All the graphite concentrates from both types of flotation were carefully refined after drying by passing through burr mills, followed by very close sizing on sifters. In March 1927, the writer ran a very successful flotation test on minus 28-mesh, deslimed, Tennessee brown phosphate "sand,"[t] using a mechanical laboratory machine built in the shops of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., through the courtesy of Ernest Klepetko. The machine was soon converted to a subaeration type, with improved results. This phosphate research program was greatly enlarged and led to the formation of the Phosphate Recovery Corporation. The development of nonmetallic flotation followed rapidly. The first flotation machine for beneficiation of phosphate was installed in January 1928, in a pilot mill, by International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, at Mulberry, Florida. These machines were Minerals Separation, 24-in., subaeration types, with weir control of pulp between cells. The sand bleeders were very small-about 1 ¼ -in. diameter. As the feed contained 15 to 25 per cent plus 28-mesh material, the cells choked up frequently. This was corrected by cutting a 2 by 6-in. bleeder opening above the impellers, at grid level, which short-circuited the coarse fractions directly into the feed of the next cell. The matter of size classification and grinding was a considerable problem, which does not come within the scope of this article. Because of the troubles noted above, cascade-type roughers were installed in the second flotation plant, built about 1930. Experimental cells had been tried in 1928. General plant layout is shown in Fig. I and details of the cascade construction in Fig. 2. The cascade installation in plant No. 2 gave good results and eliminated troubles due to choke-ups and coarse feed. The capacities and metallurgical results equaled those of the modified 24-in. Minerals Separation flotation machines in plant No. I The objections to the cascade installation are the floor space and mill height required. During 1914 and 1915, extensive experiments were conducted at the concentrator of The Detroit Copper Mining Co. of Arizona, at Morenci, Ariz., in order to test the relative grinding efficiencies of the Marathon, the Chilean and the Hardinge Mills. The Marathon mill used in the experiments was the first one ever built by the manufacturers; and since this was the first time that it was given a thorough tryout, with such remarkable results, the data have been assembled in the following paper and submitted in the interests of the milling profession. Description of the Flow Sheet The concentrator flow sheet, as it existed at the time of these tests, is shown in Fig. 1. The total mill feed, as delivered from the crushing plant, had as its maximum size 1-in. material. This material was screened dry on Cole Zig-Zag screens fitted with 4-mesh openings; the oversize going to one pair of coarse rolls, the undersize to five Wilfley tables fitted with Butchart National riffles. The coarse-roll product was elevated and screened wet on Zig-Zag screens fitted with 4-mesh openings, the undersize going to the five tables mentioned above and the oversize to one pair of fine rolls. The fine-roll product was elevated and screened together with the coarse-roll product; so that, before any concentrating operations took place, the total mill feed was reduced to pass a 4-mesh screen. After concentration on Butchart-riffled tables, the tailings from these tables passed to de-sliming hoppers, where two products were formed, viz., an overflow and a discharge. The discharge constituted the feed for the Chilean mills. It contained 16 per cent. slime (—200 mesh) and 3 parts of water to 1 of solids. IN the study of the rare earths at the authors' laboratory, methods have been devised for preparing pure rare earths and many of their properties'- have been determined. Very little information is found in the literature on the properties of europium metal, which is the scarcest of the naturally occurring rare earths. Since we have recently prepared europium in appreciable quantities, we are in a position to describe the method of preparation and some of the properties of this metal. Metallic europium was first prepared by Klemm and Bommera who heated a mixture of potassium and EuC1, in vacuo, and obtained a mixture of europium metal and KC1. Trombe4 electrolyzed a molten salt bath containing NaC1, KC1 and EuC1, and collected the europium in a molten cadmium electrode as a cadmium alloy. The cadmium was subsequently removed by distillation but the properties of the residue indicate that pure europium was not obtained. McCoy attempted to prepare europium by distilling mercury from europium amalgam, but the stability of the Eu-Hg intermetallic compounds prevented a complete separation of the two elements. The preparation of very pure europium was suggested by previous work in this laboratory1,4 in which ytterbium and samarium were prepared by heating the respective sesquioxides with lanthanum metal turnings to 1450°C in vacuo and distilling ytterbium and samarium from the mixtures. Subsequently, small test experiments showed that europium also could be prepared by this method. A more detailed version of this method was used in the work described in this paper. Klemm and Bommer3 found by X-ray analysis that the metal had a body-centered cubic (bcc) structure with a lattice constant a, = 4.582 ± 0.00A (converted from kX units), with a bulk density of 5.30 g per cu cm. They found europium to be weakly ferromagnetic. Spedding, et al,7 found a,, to be 4.606 ± 0.001A. Barrett' showed that the bcc structure persists throughout the temperature range 5 to 3000K with a, at 5, 78, and 300°K being 4.551 ± 0.003, 4.551 ± 0.004 and 4.577 ± 0.001A, respectively. Trombe1 described europium as being iron gray, malleable, about as hard as neodymium and not attacked by cold water. He estimated the melting point to be between 1100 and 1200°C. MANY existing ore deposits of valuable metals have been worked out in their upper surface levels and the continued productivity of these mines is dependent on their extension to greater depths in the earth. The maximum depths at present reached are about 6000 to 8000 ft. below the surface, with no evidence of an impoverished ore vein. These mines are widely distributed; some of the best known are in South Africa, Brazil, India and in the western sections of the United States. Among the factors which increase the difficulty of working these mines at increasing depths are hoisting, rock pressure and temperature. The manner and effectiveness with which these problems are met will, no doubt, determine in a large measure the ultimate depths to which any mine can be profitably worked. The most critical of these three factors at present is the increase in temperature with depth. The high temperature and humidity in many of these mines at present is severely detrimental to the health of the workers and greatly hampers their efficiency. Some have almost reached a condition in which the human system cannot survive. The problems involved in the cooling and ventilation of mines have all been ably analyzed and presented in previous articles. For this reason, only a resume of conditions affecting the cooling and conditioning of deep and hot mines will be given in this paper before attention is directed to possible methods of improving atmospheric conditions in the working levels.

A broad definition of' "Mill Design" might cover everything from the first tentative choice of general process to the final structural details for construction. The first phases are mainly concerned with metallurgy and economics and the final stages with the mechanics of putting the selected equipment together into an integrated plant. It is the purpose of this article to discuss only data, derived from laboratory testing, that contributes directly to design of the milling plant itself, and only the plant design phases that are influenced by laboratory testing. Most ore beneficiation testing is devoted to determining recoveries, grades of products, elimination of impurities, reagent and supply requirements, etc. having little to do with physical plant design although these factors are of prime importance in the evaluation of a mining project.

The performance of a water-drive reservoir having a gas cap depends primarily on the movement of the gar-oil and oil-water contacts. The movement of the contacts during production depends in turn on fluid withdrawals and how the reservoir pressure changes as fluids are produced from the reservoir; that is, on how effectively the aquifer maintains pressure by replacing withdrawals. inasmuch as pressure changes, fluid withdrawals, contact positions, and produced gas-oil and oil-water ratios are interdependent, the analysis and prediction of the performance of a reservoir produced in a given way must take into account this interdependence throughout depletion. This paper presents an analysis which, within the limitations of the assumptions made, yields an engineering approach to predicting future performance based on reservoir pressure and production history. The most significant assumption is the method of extrapolation of future gas-oil and water-oil ratios. The extrapolation procedure smoothly increases both ratios to preselected values as the remaining oil column undergoes a specified decrease in thickness. This preselection is made on the busis of previous field experience in depletion of similar reservoirs under similar conditions. For computing future performance a vdumebic balance L combined with the differential equation defining pressure distribution in the aquifer to obtain positions of water-oil and gas-oil contacts. From these positions are extrapolated produced water-oil and gas-oil ratios. Reservoir performance can be investigated when oil production rates are dependent upon various factors including the performance of the reservoir itself. Examples of practical application of the procedure are included. INTRODUCTION To predict performance of water-drive reservoirs with gas caps and thin oil columns, it is necessary to describe the motions of the fluids within the reservoir during the entire production period to depletion. These motions depend on the pressure changes and on the withdrawal of oil, gas and water. Production of oil from the oil zone primarily causes water to move in to take its place; production of gas from the cap tends to cause oil to migrate into its place. In addition, the volumes of oil and gas remaining in the reservoir depend on changes in the pressure, since a decrease in pressure causes fluid expansion, gas liberation and oil shrinkage. A method of relating the future pressure to total withdrawals is used to describe the motions of fluids within the reservoir under conditions arising in possible modes of production. The analysis is based on two relationships and will reduce the problem to one amenable to digital computation. The first of these concerns the dependence of the pressure distribution in the entire aquifer furnishing the water drive upon the total reservoir withdrawals. This dependence is dictated by the permeability distribution and the extent of the aquifer; at present, such information is most readily obtained from the performance history by means of the resistancecapacitance reservoir analyzer. The second relation involves withdrawals, pressure in the reservoir, and movement of oil, gas, and water within the reservoir. The analysis is subject to certain simplifying assumptions that are necessary to permit solution of the problem. A comparison of the methods of this paper with those presently practiced is pertinent. One method of analysis is to use the reservoir analyzer to predict reservoir behavior based on aquifer characteristics determined from production history. Inasmuch as the total withdrawal rate depends upon the gas-oil and water-oil ratios, which depend in turn upon, among other things, the positions of the gas-oil and water-oil contacts, these ratios must be assumed in advance. In this paper these ratios are, instead, related to the computed positions of gas-oil and water-oil contacts. Thus, our method can be applied to problems in which the oil production rate is limited by produced gas-oil ratio, or to problems in which it is desired to determine the variable gas injection rate that will maintain the gas-oil or water-oil contact stationary. These problems cannot be worked satisfactorily on the analyzer. Another method presently used is based on a paper by Hurst.' THE equilibrium between titanium in liquid iron and titanium oxides has been studied by Hadley and Derge.' They have shown that a minimum occurs in the oxygen content of the metal between 0.1 and 1.0 pct Ti, but its exact level was not fixed. The oxide phase in this minimum range was principally TiO, containing some iron oxide. On the other hand, for concentrations above 5 pct Ti the oxide phase was TiO and the oxygen content of the metal increased rapidly with increasing titanium content. From their observations and the free energy of Ti0 and TiOz reported by Kelley and ah,' it is possible to derive approximate values for the activity coefficients of titanium and oxygen in liquid iron-titanium alloys and the conditions for equilibrium in steel deoxidation. Neglecting possible departures from the stoichio-metric composition, the condition of equilibrium with Ti0 may be expressed as follows: TiO= Ti_ + C) log K = log NTl + log [% O] + log yTi + log fQ Here as a matter of convenience the titanium concentration is expressed in mol fraction while that of oxygen is in weight percent. The activity coefficients are yTi and fo. The value of log fo approaches zero as the concentration of titanium approaches zero, while that of log yTi approaches a limiting value of In Fig. 1 the sum of log NTi + log [% 0] is plotted for mol fractions of titanium between 0.05 and 0.50. The smooth extrapolation gives a value of —4.15 which corresponds to log K — log y:i . We therefore have the equation: According to the data of Kelley and Mah,' the free energy of formation of Ti0 at 1900°K is -82,400 cal. The free energy of solution of half a mol of oxygen in iron, taking 1 pct 0 as the standard state, is -29,300 cal. From these we write: From these equations the activity coefficient of titanium at infinite dilution in iron is found to have a value of 0.011 or log y°. = -1.96. This is only an approximate value but is certainly better than the estimated 0.05 in Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking To obtain approximate values for the activity coefficient at intermediate concentrations, it is as- sumed that log yTi(l is constant and equal to -1.96. This corresponds to a value of E;: = 3 In yTi/aNTi = 9.0 which is not unreasonable We now have the value for the activity of titanium and the percentage of oxygen in equilibrium with TiO. It is therefore a simple matter to calculate the activity coefficient of oxygen which is shown in Fig. 2. The effect of titanium is rather large, being comparable to that of vanadium, but not so large as has been reported for aluminum. The slope of the line at low concentrations corresponds to E: = aln yo/ aNTi=-0.37. At concentrations below 1 pct Ti the deoxidation constant and oxygen content for equilibrium with TiO, can be calculated from the foregoing data and the free energy of formation of TiO,, which according to Kelley and Mah is -144,600 cal at 1900°K. The free energy of solution of oxygen has been given; that of Ti to form a dilute solution with 1 pct Ti as the standard state is RT ln (0.5585 y:i/47.9) = -34,800 cal. From these data we find (for concentrations in wt pct): TiO, = Ti + 2 -0; hFTgO0= + 51,200 cal log if =-5.89 The interaction coefficients, concentrations being expressed as wt pct, are e;: = alogfTi/a[% Ti] = +0.048 and e:' = a logfo,/a[ojTi] = -0.187. The calculation gives the following results which, in view of the impurity of the oxide phase, must be regarded as approximate:

IN the course of another investigation the lattice parameters were determined for a series of compositions of tin in copper. Ten-gram samples of the alloys were made from spectroscopically pure tin and copper. The metals were weighed and placed in graphite capsules (previously fired at 5500°F) which were then sealed individually in evacuated vycor tubes. The tubes were mounted on a spit, transverse to its axis, which continually rotated the melts in a furnace. After homogenizing, filings were made of one third of each slug by filing off a complete cross section. A 325-mesh sieve was used to obtain the powder for the X-ray determination. The sieved powders were annealed in vacuo at 600°C for 24 hr to remove the cold work, and then quenched. The lattice parameters were determined with a flat-plate back-reflection camera using CuKa radiation (A., = 1.5405A, A,? = - 1.5443A). With this radiation the (331) and (420) reflections appeared close to the focusing region. As reference lines were used the same reflections from pure copper powder, between which the (420) lines of all these alloys are situated. The variation of the systematic error over this angular range was found to be less than the estimated experimental error ±0.0005A which is indicated in Fig. 1 for all but the sample with 8 pct Sn. As a check some of the powders also were examined in a regular Debye-Scherrer camera with the Straumanis film mounting. The parameters were here evaluated by extrapolation against cos2? to ?= 90o. The results are shown in Fig. 1 where the lattice parameters in Angstrom units are plotted as a function of weight percent of tin. The reflection lines for the 8 pct alloy were not clear at first, perhaps due to coring. Several measurements were made after different annealing programs on two separate

The Du Pont Magazine for August and September gives the following interesting information regarding recent progress in the use' of explosives. Blasting -Clay.-"The place where I tried blasting down clay for a brick yard had been worked for some years by old-time pick and shovel method. There was a large shallow pit, irregular in shape, with a perpendicular face at one end. I put down a line of holes 3 ft. deep and 6 ft. back from this face, loading each hole with one and one-half car-tridges of Red Cross Extra 40 per cent. dynamite. The charges were connected up to a blasting machine circuit and fired electrically. "Two of these shots kept the brick yard men very busy for two days taking out the loose clay. "I am convinced that if any brick yard man will try this method he will always have a blasting machine and dynamite on hand thereafter, because it cuts labor cost almost in two to get down the clay in. this way." In some clay pits the practice is to blast a large amount of clay in the fall, allowing it to freeze and thaw through the winter. Such clay is much easier to puddle in the spring than freshly dug or blasted clay. When the clay contains stones, the blasting loosens them and makes their separation-easy. Well-Drill Holes in Quarrying.-The well drill or cable drill method of working a quarry face is now in quite common use. The use of large drills is constantly increasing among quarrymen. In fact the growing tendency is for large machinery of all kinds such as mammoth crushers, steam shovels, etc. Volume is what is wanted nowadays. The advantages of the big drill over the piston driven drill are numerous. By carrying the holes the full depth of the face the stone is loaded and treated on one working floor. It eliminates the cost of bench cleaning. Loading operations are less frequent, thus lessening the danger. Stone can be shot down in greater volume and in better shape, making it economical to use a steam shovel. No bench cleaning makes it safer for the men. It is cheaper and can be used in outlying and temporary operations where the cost of installing a power plant would be out of the question. It permits a greater spacing of bore holes and eliminates the necessity of "squibbing" or springing. In this method usually holes from 4 in. to 6 in. in diameter are drilled the full depth of the face from 15 ft. to 2,0 ft. apart, and as far back and the whole face shot down at one time. The cost of well drilling may vary all the way from 20 cents to 75 cents: per foot, and in extremely hard rocks up to $1.50 per foot.

The plastic flow of .molybdenum was studied in compression at temperatures below the ductile-to-brittle transition in tension. It was found that molybdenum is ductile in compression at all temperatures down to —196°C. The yield strength continues to increase with decreased test temperature below the tensile ductile-to-brittle transition temperature range. Difficulty was encountered in correlating the experimental data obtained with existing theories of plastic flow. THE body-centered-cubic metals as a group show a rapid and very large increase in yield strength with decreasing test temperature.' It is of fundamental importance to the understanding of the mechanism of plastic flow that this general characteristic be examined carefully. Unfortunately, brittle fracture in low-temperature tensile tests prohibits the measurement of flow properties at very low temperatures. By using compression tests, fracture can be suppressed and the plastic flow of the bcc metals can be studied far below their tensile ductile-to-brittle transition temperatures. Molybdenum was chosen for this experiment and plastic-flow data were obtained down to —196°C.

In continental Europe the feldspar jig is used almost exclusively for cleaning the fine sizes of coal; it operates with an artificial bed, made up generally of pieces of feldspar or of any other hard and heavy rock with good cleavages. A primitive form of this machine requiring close supervision was used in this country years ago, but output was small. The modern machines are generally air-pulsated Baum-type jigs, with capacities up to 150 tph, and treat sizes from 3/s in. to 0, usually previously dedusted or deslimed. These jigs are equipped with very accurate and sensitive automatic controls insuring satisfactory operation even at low separating gravity and with feeds irregular in quality and quantity. This paper will deal more particularly with coal cleaning separation, but the technical studies apply equally to all minerals.
