A GLANCE at the list of papers1 that have been published since 1920 on the general subject of flotation suggests the variety of ideas that exist regarding the underlying cause of the phenomenon.' Among these ideas, we find several coherent theories, but none that adequately and completely explain the phenomenon. Ralston2 and Bains3 suggested an electrical theory which has to do with the attachment of mineral particles to a bubble by the attraction of unlike electrical charges. This theory has its root in the fact that a bubble of air in pure water is electrified in such a way that the surface is negatively charged while the body of the water is positively charged. This result, which was first discussed by Helmholtz, also obtains when the water contains anything except a high concentration of hydrogen ions, or ions which are trivalent or tetravalent. The theory also holds that the mineral particles have positive charges on their surfaces, and so there is attachment between bubble surface and mineral particles by the old law of electrostatics, which states that unlike charges attract. CONTACT ANGLE AND OIL ATTRACTION The contact angle-the angle formed by a fluid-fluid boundary when both are in contact with a solid-has been indicted several times for complicity in the phenomenon of flotation. This angle is supposed to indirectly measure the surface energy of a solid. Thus if we have two fluids in contact with a solid, we may express the difference between the two fluid-solid tensions as equal to the fluid-fluid tension times the cosine of the angle between the two fluids.4 If the two fluids are in contact with the solid, this is, no doubt, an excellent way of establishing relative surface energies. However, in flotation, we deal with substances which are not wetted by water. What assurance have we, then, that the angle

Ordinarily age-hardening is thought of as being associated with a limited solubility of one metal in another. Much less has been written about the type of age-hardening that attends the formation of superstructures. Solid solutions generally have a disordered or random arrangement of atoms; that is to say, in a unit cell, such as that of the face-centered cubic lattice, there is no distinction between atomic sites. Atoms of a given metal may occupy cube corners or face centers. Under certain conditions, however, some alloys develop what is known as an ordered structure. In this case, cube corners would be occupied by only one type of atom and face centers by another type. Associated with this ordering process are many interesting changes in physical and electrical properties. Moreover, in many instances the alloys become susceptible to age-hardening. From the evidence now to be described, it appears that age-hardening in 14-carat gold alloys is due to the formation of both a superstructure and a precipitate. Alloys of the metals gold, silver and copper were known in antiquity. The available knowledge regarding their constitution has been ably summarized and extended by Sterner-Rainer,' Jänecke,2 Carter,3 Wise,4 and Coleman.5 Despite the long familiarity with these alloys and the numerous investigations of their properties that have been made, there is still much that remains unexplained. It has been known for a long time that the hardness of these alloys is closely related to the rate of cooling. Similar changes have been observed in the binary gold-copper systemI6 one alloy of which corresponding to the formula CU³AU, has been the subject of a careful and competent report by the English investigators, Sykes and Evans.7 They have established the fact that the shift of atoms from the ordered to the disordered condition takes place in some critical temperature range. At temperatures above the critical range the structure is random, and at temperatures below it the structure is ordered. No difference between these two structures is revealed by the microscope. Both have a face-centered cubic lattice and complete solubility, so that there is no evidence to suggest that the changes in properties are associated with a phase change. The more slowly the alloy is cooled, the higher is the degree to which the ordering process proceeds and the more marked is the increase in hardness. As experimental data were accumulated on I4-carat gold alloys, several contradictions arose. Certain observations tended to confirm the existence of a superstructure, while other observations seemed to be inconsistent with such a transformation. Present Investigation As a focal point about which to develop this subject, it is expedient to consider first

Biotite, magnetite and quartz feldspar separates from rocks around porphyry copper deposits in the Highland Valley have been analyzed for copper, zinc and other related trace and major elements. Results show high copper concentrations in mineral samples close to mineralization, with a strong positive correlation with whole-rock copper contents. Zinc, on the other hand, shows no cleat-cut systematic relationship to mineralization, although there is a subtle decrease in the dues obtained for anomalous biotite samples. Manganese, cobalt and nickel in biotites show similar patterns as zinc. Using a sulfide-selective leach, it is show that the enhanced copper dues in mineral samples proximate to mineralization can be accounted for by the presence of minute inclusions of sulfides. In contrast zinc seems to occur in isomorphous substitution for femic elements, in a form that is leachable by hydrothermal activity. Results also show that copper content of biotite has a positive correlation with the modal proportion of biotites and their iron contents, whereas a negative relationship with manganese is apparent Geochemical contrast for copper between background and anomaly is not better in mineral fractions than whole rocks, consequently the use of minerals as sampling media shows no obvious advantage for mineral exploration purposes in the Highland Valley district.

The development of solvent extraction processes over recent years has led to their application on an increasing scale in metal extraction plants. The author's company has recently been awarded a contract for the design of the world's largest solvent extraction plant based on pump-mix mixer-settlers. The plant is designed to extract copper from a leach liquor and has an aqueous throughput of 12,000 imperial gpm. The design is based largely upon data obtained from the company's own research laboratories, where work has been undertaken on mixer impeller design, baffle design. settler area, organic entrainment recovery, etc. Investigations have been conducted into the effects of mixer impeller speed, recirculation rates, phase continuity, phase ratio, etc., on extraction efficiency, settler area, and organic entrainment losses. The implications of the results of this work on the design of a large plant using pump-mix mixer-settlers are discussed and the techniques used in overcoming certain scaling problem are outlined.

Rocks of the Precambrian Shield of Rusk County, Wis., were recognized as a favorable host for volcanogenic base metal deposits by personnel of Bear Creek Mining Co. Most of the county is covered by a thick layer of glacial drift: consequently, geophysical techniques played a prominent role in the exploration program conceived and initiated there in 1966. The original work on three Precambrian exposures was followed by an airborne electromagnetic survey and subsequent ground follow-up. A geophysical evaluation of air-borne anomaly F-22 defined a target which was interpreted as a massive sulfide body. Numerous potential field and electrical tools were utilized to describe the geometry and physical properties of the target. Drilling confirmed the massive sulfide interpretation and eztentually outlined a 6 million-ton copper deposit.

From data found in the literature, a method has been derived for calculating hardenability of titanium alloys from their composition. A single graph gives the contributions of each alloying element. These are simply added to a base hardenability for unalloyed titanium. Results agree satisfactorily with measured harden-abilities. RECENTLY the importance of hardenability of titanium alloys in permitting attainment of high strength and hardness has become apparent. If a titanium-base alloy has adequate hardenability for the section size and quenching practice used, it can generally be heat treated to high strength and hardness either by simple quenching or cooling from temperatures near the ß transus, by quenching and tempering (aging), or perhaps by direct isothermal transformation of ß1,2 If the hardenability is inadequate, high strength cannot be attained. Preliminary charts translating hardenability requirements for shapes quenched in various media into terms of Jominy end quenched hardenability specimens or ideal round sizes are now available for titanium alloys." The method proposed in 1942 by M. A. Grossmann for calculating hardenability of steels from composition has proved to be of great practical value.' It appeared worthwhile to see whether, using information available in the literature, a corresponding method for calculating hardenability of titanium-base alloys could be derived. Data No systematic experimental study of the hardenability of titanium-base alloys has yet been made. There is available, however, a considerable quantity of scattered data bearing on hardenability. Some investigators determined Jominy curves on one or several alloys. Others reported as-quenched hardness for specimens of a few alloys cooled at various rates or in various media. Still others gave the as-quenched hardness for systematically varied composition, using one or several cooling mediums. The measurements utilized in this work were limited to hardness. Strength measurements were not used because a low strength may reflect high hardness combined with brittleness. Since, in general, the hardness of titanium alloys goes through a peak as the cooling rate is varied from extremely fast to extremely slow, the cooling conditions at which peak hardness was found were taken as the measure of hardenability.1,2 When as-quenched hardness was found to drop as the content of an alloying element (believed to increase hardenability) was raised, this was taken as an indication that the cooling rate was faster than that giving peak hardness; otherwise, the hardness should go up because of solid solution hardening. Also, if the hardness increased on tempering at low temperatures, this was again taken to indicate that the cooling rate had been faster than that giving peak hardness. Many of the data did not indicate precisely the cooling conditions for peak hardness but merely set a maximum or a minimum bound, or a bracket. Since the sizes of specimens quenched and the location of the hardness readings were not always given, it was occasionally necessary to estimate reasonable limits for them. Only the nominal compositions were available in some cases. As quenching from below the ß transus is equivalent to starting with a mixture of a and ß phases, whose individual composition would differ from the overall composition of the alloy, only measurements after quenches from above the ß transus were used. Hardness measurements on samples heated during metal-lographic mounting were also discarded. Because of their bulk, the data used will not be reproduced. They have been or will be published elsewhere.5-22 Approach All data were first translated into terms of ideal round size. For conversion from Jominy or quenched round or sheet, the author's graphs were used." For a few furnace cools or helium quenches where cooling rates were given, conversion was made on the basis of equal cooling coefficient.23 Plots of ideal round size for peak hardness against percentage of alloying element were next made for

TEN years ago a broad knowledge of aerial mapping, coupled with a smattering of geology, qualified one to speak on the subject of the appli-cation of aerial mapping to geology. Today, with aerial maps a common tool in the hands of expert geologists on every continent throughout the world, it would be nothing short of presumptuous for the author of this paper, who is not a geologist, to give any geological statements on his own authority. Relatively, today we are only purveyors of general geological gossip, with a definite case here and there by way of illustration. But we can present a story of the really marvellous strides that have been made in the evolution of aerial mapping, built around a skeleton of geological tidbits, from which some useful conclusions may be drawn. The average geologist goes about reading his aerial maps much as one would approach the problem of deciphering a cryptogram. To begin with, typical key expressions appear in recurring sequences and under certain conditions. If once the meaning of these isolated bits of infor-mation can be ascertained, the message begins to take meaning. In a similar fashion, the geologist works out his key from aerial maps of territory with which he has some familiarity. He learns that a certain type of thin, white line may mean a vein of quartz. He sees that a certain change in the photographic tone of vegetation on the ground reflects two kinds of soils on opposite sides of, a contact. He sees that a certain type of alignment of topographical features often means a fault. He learns that by the erosion pattern .he can frequently distinguish soft formations from harder ones. And so, bit by bit, he ties together the information of the picture with his experience on the ground until he develops a reasonably creditable capacity of interpretation. Through the complete gamut of surface conditions, ranging all the way from flat, arid, exposed desert terrain to dense jungle, or rugged mountains, the evidence from which the geologist must make his inter-pretation varies with bewildering profusion. The quality of photographs which are obtainable may range from perfect pictures in the desert to almost useless smudges in the steaming jungles. One thing he has learned with certainty-the airplane carrying its mapping camera is a superb reconnaissance tool, only awaiting his ingenuity in correlating the pictures with the ground to simplify most exploratory problems.

An attempt to duplicate Rawdon and Mutchler's experiments showing a reversal of hardness with continued rolling gave negative results, indicating that the phenomenon is not general but depends, probably, on local conditions of rolling. IN A recent paper, Rawdon and Mutchler1 gave some exceptionally interesting results on the Brinell and scratch hardness of severely cold-worked metals. In their work, they found that, on continued cold rolling, the metal hardened up to a particular point and then reversed and became softer; this was true for both Brinell and scratch hardness values. The generally reported behavior2 of metals, with respect to Brinell tests on cold-worked material, is that the metals harden up to a certain point and then, on further cold rolling, no change in Brinell hardness occurs. Jeffries and Archer3 state that there is little difference between the scratch hardness of annealed and cold-worked metals; the work of Faust and Tammann4 also indicated no difference between-the hardness of annealed and cold-worked copper. Rawdon and Mutchler found, when they plotted the reduction ratio (initial thickness divided by thickness after rolling) against the hardness value for the cold-rolled material, that the hardness number increased up to a reduction ratio of about 3 and then decreased and became even smaller than that for the annealed metal. This behavior was reported for both scratch and Brinell hardness; Figs. 1 and 2 show their results for Brinell hardness on the metals for which they published data. This is an exceptionally interesting phenomenon, if it occurs under all conditions of rolling, and would have an important bearing on the practice of cold

DURING an investigation of high-strength manganese bronze by the Engineering Division of the Air Service, at McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio, particles of a "blue constituent" were noted in the microstructure of most of the bronzes examined. The constitution of the simple copper-zinc base alloy is still a matter of dispute in spite of the fact that the copper-zinc series is one of the oldest industrially important groups of alloys, and has received the early consideration of scientific research. The diagram, according to the most recent work,1 is shown in Fig. 1. The disputed questions involve the termination of the beta field and the line at 470° C. The earliest experimenter, Roberts-Austin, detected an arrest in some of his cooling curves at approximately this temperature and ascribed them to the formation of a eutectic; it has since been proved that there are no eutectics in this series. Shepherd2 was unable to detect any thermal arrests at this temperature; his diagram was essentially as shown in Fig. 1, except that the line at 470° C. was omitted and the beta phase carried down to normal temperatures. Later, Carpenter and Edwards,3 by a very painstaking research, definitely established the authenticity of the line but attributed it to the breakdown of the beta constituent into a eutectoid of alpha and gamma. Microscopic evidence of the formation of the eutectoid is doubtful and it seems more likely to be due to an allotropic change in the beta constituent as shown by Fig. 1. At least for practical purposes, it is more convenient to think of the structure of a 60-40 brass as a mixture of alpha and beta prime crystals rather than alpha plus an unresolvable eutectoid of "apparent beta" as it has often been called.

The stress-strain behavior of zinc single crystals was measured over a strain range of 10-6 to 10-2. The phenomenon of macroyielding was observed in detail and plastic strains were detected at almost zero-stress. Closed hysteresis loops were observed during loading and unloading in the strain region of about 10-5. From the hysteresis a frictional stress on the dislocation of about 6 psi was obtained. A preliminary analysis indicates that impurities are primarily responsible for the friction. Nonelastic Strains as much as 10 -4 were recovered depending on the amount of prior deformation. Part of the recovered strain occurs instantaneously upon unloading and the remainder occurs at zero stress. The time dependence of the recovered strain was measured. THIS investigation is concerned with the details of plastic deformation preceding the ordinary yield point as measured with the usual strain sensitivity of about 10-4. The approach leads to internal friction observations in the hitherto neglected frequency range below 10-1 cycles per sec. It is believed that if the phenomenon of macroscopic yielding is to be understood, then the stress-strain curve in the neighborhood of the macroyield point should be greatly magnified. It may then be possible to determine whether macroscopic yielding is a unique event or whether it is a process which begins gradually at a lower stress. In the case of low-carbon steel a unique event obviously occurs at the macroscopic yield point as indicated by a drop in the load, but copper appears to exhibit a gradual transition from the elastic to the plastic state. In zinc the yield point is rather abrupt although the data indicates that some plastic deformation precedes large scale yielding.' One of the purposes of this investigation is to determine whether there is an abrupt transition from the preyield microstrain region to the region of macroscopic deformation. Such a rapid transition would support the concept that there is a critical stress for yielding. The concept that yielding is a unique event associated with such phenomenon as activating a Frank-Read source, freeing the dislocation from solute atoms, dislocations cutting through dislocations, or dislocations moving freely by one another, has been expounded widely on theoretical grounds. It is hoped that highly sensitive measurements of strain in the neighborhood of the macroscopic yield point will shed some light on the event known as the "Yield Point". EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1) Specimens—High-purity zinc was cast into spherical graphite moulds in air and grown into spherical single crystals by the Bridgman method under a positive pressure of Argon gas. Spectro-graphic analysis of cleaved sections from four crystals showed a purity of 99.994 pet Zn. The specimens were acid machined with an 1/8 in. gage section in a form similar to those used by Parker and co-workers.2 Bausch type grips were fastened to the specimen by Epon VI adhesive. The specimens were oriented so that only [1120] (0001) slip occurred. Fig. 1 shows two of the specimens in the grips. Prior to each test, the gage section of the specimen was given a concentrated HNO3 chemical polish followed by alcohol rinsing and air blast drying. 2) Test Method- The shear tests were performed on an Instron testing machine and the experimental set-up was made very "hard". Strain could be measured to a sensitivity of 10 -6 by means of a capacitance gage extensometer. The design and calibration of this type of extensometer to measure microstrain, as applied to pure shear and tensile tests of metals, will be the subject of a separate paper—therefore, only a brief account will be presented here. Seven iron alloys ranging from 5 to 12 pct Ni and 5 to 14 pct Cr were studied. All alloys transformed to bcc massive martensites. Tempering increased the strengths , probably because of relief of residual stresses generated by the martensite transformation. The major strengthening mechanism appeared to be solid-solution hardening by nickel and chromium. Studies of the work-hardening behaviw, of the effects of prior austenite grain size, and of the effects of changing strain rate and test temperature gaue results very similar to iron or low-alloy steels. Increasing nickel contents markedly improved the toughness at subzero temperatures. Studies of the flow properties did not, however, indicate the reason for the beneficial effect of nickel on toughness. The marine atmosphere corrosion resistance of the alloys was improved primarily by chromium additions, but increasing nickel contents were also beneficial at low levels of chromium. J\ number of maraging and PH stainless steels are strengthened by precipitation hardening in a low-carbon Fe-Ni-Cr martensite matrix. To some extent the resultant properties of these steels must depend upon the properties of this matrix. The present study therefore was conducted to evaluate the transformation characteristics and mechanical properties of a series of Fe-Ni-Cr martensitic ternary alloys. A limited evaluation of the corrosion resistance of the alloys in marine atmosphere was also made. ALLOY PREPARATION Seven 100-lb air induction melts were prepared using electrolytic iron, nickel, and chromium metal additions. The initial Fe-Ni charge also contained 0.05 wt pct graphite to produce a carbon boil during melt down. After melting of the base charge, the heats were refined with 0.1 wt pct additions of manganese, silicon, aluminum and titanium and poured into cast-iron molds. The ingots were homogenized at 1250°C and uni-directionally hot-rolled to 2-in. plate. They were then homogenized another hour at 1250°C, and unidirection-ally hot-rolled to %-in. plate at a finishing temperature of approximately 1050°C. The compositions of the heats are given in Table I. Two additional heats were prepared as 40-lb vacuum-induction melts using electrolytic iron, nickel, and chromium metals, and commercially pure molybdenum chips. A carbon boil, and 0.1 wt pct additions of aluminum and titanium were again employed, but manganese and silicon were not added. The heats were converted to %-in. plate using the procedure described above. The compositions of these heats are included in Table I.

WELL known to every metallurgist is the fact that different production schedules will profoundly affect the character of annealed metal strip. Yet the number of conditions [ ] that may be wrought by different combinations of rolling and annealing schedules is so myriad that despite the continual research that is being applied to this subject, the complete picture is not yet known. Copper, like all other metals, during the process of rolling or annealing, develops certain crystallographic configurations which should not be dismissed as being too impractical, for the crystallographic condition existing within the metal is a principal influence upon both the external mechanical properties and the behavior of the material [ ] when it is subjected to such operations as bending, flanging, drawing, and so forth. The age classification of the mineralized veins of the Butte district, as given by Weed and Sales, was tacitly accepted for many years. Weed, whose field work was completed in 1906, divided the copper veins into groups of four ages.' In 1913, Sales modified Weed's classification and assigned all mineralized veins (including the silver-zinc veins of the border or "peripheral" zones) to three periods of fracturing and mineralization. Both writers based their classifications mainly on the relative ages of the observable faulting whereby the veins of a so-called "earlier" system are intersected and offset by those of a "later" system. Nevertheless they possess structural and mineralogical characteristics in common which indicate that they are of the same age. The writer has maintained since 19143 that these vein systems were formed during one general period of mineralization along a network of intersecting fractures of approximately simultaneous origin and that the existing offsets are largely due to postmineral faulting. Leith,* takes cognizance of the accumulating mass of data relative to the simultaneous formation of intersecting fracture systems and says, referring to ~utte: "It now appears that the mineralization accompanying them (individual structure systems into which the veins have been grouped) is substantially of one period, indicating that the successive structural movements took place mainly within the period of mineralization." This paper presents the results of certain structural experiments which suggest a modified interpretation of the published data on the Butte district. The interpretation is substantiated by the writer's observations in the Butte mines and is offered with the hope that it will reconcile the structural with the mineralogical conditions existing in this most interesting district; also, that it will emphasize the importance of a

Instability of rock slopes may occur by failure along pre- existing structural discontinuities, by failure through intact material or by failure along a surface formed partly along discontinuities and partly through intact material. Although certain fundamental failure modes are recognized, the mechanisms of slope failure are varied and complex. Such mechanisms are governed by the engineering geology conditions of the rock mass, which are almost always unique to a particular site. An understanding of failure mechanisms requires a knowledge of the physical, mechanical and strength properties of the intact material and discontinuities which make up the rock mass, as well as the structural geology and hydrogeology. These engineering geology parameters also must be evaluated with respect to the slope geometry to determine failures which are kinematically possible. Only after obtaining a reasonable appreciation of the possible failure modes can a rational mechanical stability analysis be carried out. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional failure mechanisms should be considered in assessing the design of rock slopes. Simple analyses methods are used initially to identify those possible failures which could control slope stability. More complex and detailed analyses usually are required for a few critical failure modes which could control stability, or where a more complex type of failure mechanism is envisaged. Complex failure mechanisms are usually identified when assessing previous slope failures. More detailed information concerning slope geometry and engineering geology parameters must be acquired where analyses must be more rigorous.

Nowhere can there be found a more misleading statement than the old one that "Iron can be manufactured cheaper in the South." During the past decade ironmakers and users of iron have heard varied and sundry stories of the wonderful resources of the Birmingham district, including abundant ore and coal fields, cheap labor, a wonderful climate and similar industrial Utopian statements. Birmingham represents the major portion of the iron business in the South, and as Birmingham fares so goes the iron business of the South. The intent of this paper is to shed some light on the actual conditions surrounding ironmaking in the South, especially in the Birmingham, or North Alabama, district. By a presentation of facts it is desired to point out that the "cheap iron" of the industrial South is a thing of the past, primarily because of increased labor cost and because labor is radically different in performance to what it was years ago. Also, because most of the raw materials needed in ironmaking that would be classed better than inferior are gone. Important Factors The several important factors that have been responsible for this change are : 1. Shrinkage of the iron business in the South. 2. Increased labor cost. 3. The development of the South, with an industrial trend, without a substantial increase of its own iron-consuming market. 4. Increased freight rates, which has narrowed the market that might be reached from this district. 5. Depletion of the better grades of raw materials, both ore and coal. Anomalous geological features in the coal and surrounding strata of a mine in northern West Virginia have fractured and deformed an inherently weak roof rock prior to mining. Horizontal stresses, as much as six times greater than overburden related horizontal stresses, have induced cutter roof failure. This failure was distinguishable from rock deformation associated with geological anomalies because it was induced by mining. The characterization of these features has allowed for the prediction of zones of unstable roof rock and the determination of failure trends on gateroad stability. Geological anomalies included clastic dikes and a narrow zone of sandstone roof. Clastic dikes, representing intrusions of shale and claystone, were invariably accompanied by local roof rock instability, and often formed the boundaries of roof falls. Shale was the dominant roof lithology except where a small sandstone occurred in the northwest portion of the longwall mining area. The sandstone occurs in two phases: a sandstone-filled channel, 5-m- thick and 60-m-wide, which eroded and replaced the shale roof and the upper part of the coalbed; and a sheet sandstone unit which was crossbedded to interbedded with the underlying shale. Horizontal stresses are naturally relieved through the initiation of cutter roof failure. This failure may extend from a few meters to several tens of meters horizontally, and from a few centimeters to several meters vertically. Orientations of entries and crosscuts has a greater influence on the direction and total length of cutter roof failure at the rib-roof intersection than does the principal directions of the in situ horizontal stresses. Seventy-four percent of the cutter roof failures occurred along the rib-roof intersection. Orientations of cutter roof failure away from the rib- roof intersection were clustered in the north-south direction and may have been influenced by the horizontal stress field.

In view of the importance of the application of scientific principles to the production of oil from the reservoir, the Production Staff of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. (late Anglo-Persian Oil Co.) has been engaged for some years on an intensive program of research on the physical properties of crude oil. Problems involving the retention of crude oil in capillaries and fine fissures demanded for their solution a knowledge of the surface tension and specific gravity of the crude under reservoir conditions, and it is the purpose of this paper to describe briefly the methods adopted for the determination of these properties, and to present the more important results. A detailed article was published in volume 1 of the World Congress Proceedings (1933). Surface-tension observations on crude oil regassed at high pressures with natural gases have been made in the past by Beecher and Park-hurstl and Swartz2, but up to the time of the investigations in Iran no one seems to have carried out experiments with gas-saturated crude direct from the reservoir and kept at its original pressure. Results obtained in this manner are obviously of greater practical value for solving problems connected with the reservoir. Method of Measurement No apparatus for the measurements, under the pressure conditions involved, was available, and a suitable instrument had to be designed and constructed in the Fields workshops. Careful consideration of the matter led to the adoption of a method for measuring the surface tension which did not involve a knowledge of the specific gravity of the oils under the working conditions: the main reason for this being that up to that time no accurate determination of the specific gravity had been made under these conditions.
