The Henderson Mine started production in 1976 utilizing a unique, push-pull, mine ventilation plan. As the mine expands in size, the mine ventilation requirements will increase and a more comprehensive system for maintaining ventilation will be needed. A computer simulation study was completed and has resulted in a revised, systematic, mine ventilation plan which is being implemented as mine development proceeds. Based on the computer simulation study, the new ventilation plan takes into account mining of the orebody simultaneously from both the 8100 and 7700 production levels. Present experience and empirical data indicate that volumes of air needed to adequately ventilate both production levels cannot be obtained utilizing the existing mine layout. The total volume of air needed for the mine excluding haulage tunnel will increase from 708 m3/s (1 500 000 cfm) to 1652 m3/s (3 500 000 cfm), thus a new No. 5 exhaust shaft and connecting drifts are being developed to expand the mine ventilation system to service both production levels. The original ventilation plan for the 7500 haulage level was to bring air from the No. 2 and No. 3 intake shafts and exhaust it through the 94X raise to the 8035 exhaust level and then through the No. 1 exhaust shaft to surface. Control of air volumes in loading drifts was initially planned to be achieved by air doors and air curtains. Air doors on the 7500 level require large cutouts, expensive installations and constant maintenance. The computer simulation study indicates that air- flow in the 7500-level production drifts can be con- trolled exclusively by air curtains which are less expensive to install and more effective in regulating airflows than air doors. Air from the 7500 level can be exhausted through a new raise to the new 7635 exhaust level and then through the new No. 5 exhaust shaft.

No wildcat operations are recorded from France during the past year, and no new discoveries have been made. In northern Africa, in Morocco, some prospecting continued in the Gharb and Tselfat regions. Only very small production or shows were found. At the close of the year one cable-tool well (depth 400 meters) was drilling in the Tselfat district, and one rotary well in the Gharb. In Tunisia one well was drilling at Sloughia. Refinery building has been active under the new petroleum law, no less than six plants now being under construction. At Pechelbronn, it is estimated 130 wells were drilled, of which 73 wells, or 56 per cent, were productive. Total drilling was 45,000 m. One new Jurassic horizon was discovered. In the mining area approximately 17,500 m. of new gallery were driven. Production at Pechelbronn for the first nine months was as follows: From wells, 233,013 bbl.; from mines, 164,815 bb1.—a total estimated production for the year of 532,000 bbl. Production at Gabian was 3780 bbl. for the year. In Algeria production from Tliouanet was small, being estimated at 6510 bbl. This production is from Helvetian sands (Miocene) around a salt plug. Italy Production for the year was 211,500 bbl., an increase of 62 per cent over that of last year. Drilling to the extent of 97,000 ft. was done mainly by the A. G. I. P., the government company in the Province of Emilia. More locations are being tested in this area, where geophysical results have shown indications of buried uplifts. Oil has been encountered on two of these structures, at Fontevivo and Podenzano, but the wells have given trouble with salt water. The chief producer is the Societa Petrolifera Italiana at Salsomaggiore and Valezza. The production is from sand lenses at relatively shallow depths. New concessions of 2000 hectares were granted at several points in the Po Valley, and geophysical work is being carried on. The A. G. I. P. is working on a five-year program of exploration to test new areas.

Copper oxide ore may be leached at all sizes from run-of-mine down to pulp, and consideration must be given to all available methods in determining the most economical one. Heap leaching was evaluated in a pilot plant at Gaspe Copper Mines, Ltd. which was designed to simultaneously leach two 1200-ton dumps of ore. The plant was operated for two years, in part under severe winter conditions. Two modes of leaching were investigated: acid leaching in which sulfuric acid was added externally to the leach solution, and pyritic leaching in which pyrite concentrate was added to the dump and acid was generated in situ by bacterial action. The pilot plant operation is described, and the results are compared with laboratory data obtained in 6-in.-diam columns. It is concluded that pyritic leaching offers certain operating advantages over acid leaching when copper is recovered by cementation in that iron buildup in the solution is prevented.

Why Perlite Expands: Perlite is known to contain some dissolved or combined fluid, probably water, which is lost when the material is heated to fusion. It is generally agreed that when particles of this volcanic glass are heated to fusion in such a way that vaporization of this water into steam takes place at the same time as the glass becomes soft, the steam puffs up each particle into a mass of glass foam. It is a simple matter to expand perlite under a blow torch for demonstration purposes, but in commercial installations, the problem is made more complicated by the necessity of making efficient use of both raw material and fuel, and producing an expanded aggregate conforming to close specifications for size distribution and density, using many different types of perlite rock. The ability of a given operation to fulfill these requirements depends upon the proper handling of four variables. They are: (1) the nature of the perlite rock used, (2) the heating time taken to get the perlite particle up to its highest temperature, (3) the size of the particle, and (4) the maximum temperature the particle reaches. Types of Perlite Rock: Perlite may be classified in many ways, but the characteristics most easily correlated with its behavior in furnaces are its softening temperature, its effective water content, and its "liveliness." Actually there is a close correlation among these three characteristics so it is possible to describe a perlite using any one of them. Lively perlites always have low softening temperatures and high effective water contents, whereas the deader perlites have higher softening temperatures and lower effective water contents. These softening temperatures run from 1400°F to above 2000°F and the effective water contents run from over 2 pct down to 0.2 pct. Included in the category of lively glasses are the green pitchstone from the Edgar claim in Superior, Ariz., the red pitchstone on the Animas highway south of Lordsburg, N. THERE is very little useful material in the litera-ture on the construction of manometers, so each experimenter must devise his own instrument. I have experimented for a number of years and have finally built one that is satisfactory. If we are to obtain accurate friction factors in mine-ventilation problems we must use accurate instruments. The most simple and convenient instrument for the mea-surement of small pressures is the inclined manometer or U-tube. By changing the angle at which the tube is set, any desired magnification of the pressure reading may be obtained. The first question in regard to the manometer is: What liquid shall be used? Alcohol, in my opinion, is the best. It does not cling to the glass and it does not attack the rubber tubes. The next problem is the setting of the instrument at the proper angle. One method is illustrated in Fig. 1. The base plate AC is made horizontal by a level bubble. The plate AB, which carries the U-tube, is hinged at A. The angle z which AB makes with the horizontal may be made any value by pinning the end B at the calculated position on the arm CD. Such an instrument may be designed to read directly in inches of water if a liquid of constant specific gravity is used. If the specific gravity varies, a calculation is necessary to convert the reading into inches of water.

In the above ?o represents the instantaneous strain on loading, ?t the limit of transient creep, ?S the steady-state creep rate, t the time, and ? a constant leading to the exhaustion rate of transient creep. It was noted that this equation was similar in form to that proposed originally2 by McVetty. This type of equation was also suggested by Andrade and Aboav3 in studies of the shear strain of cadmium. Calculation of the constants ?o, ?t, ?, and ?s, in Eq. [ l] is somewhat involved due to the slight complexity of this relationship. In the paper by Garofalo a computer approach based on a least-squares analysis was recommended. Such an approach involves a trial and error solution but when a computer facility is available the difficulties in this calculation are of little consequence. It does mean however that the evaluation of this type of equation would become quite tedious if computer facilities were not available. Some recent studies have identified a fairly straightforward method for calculating the constants in the Garofalo equation. Exploration work in 1932 in the Rocky Mountain region, which includes the states of Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico, resulted in the discovery of one new oil field, Cut Bank in Glacier County, Montana; one new gas field, Craig in Moffat County, Colorado; and the definite outlining of a second gas field, Piceance Creek in Rio Blanco County, Colorado, in which there had been drilled but one small gas well prior to 1932. During the year, 95 producing oil or gas wells were completed, giving new initial production amounting to 188,000,000 cu. ft. of gas and 176,420 bbl. of oil per day for the region. By far the largest part of this new production of both oil and gas was developed in southeastern New Mexico, mainly the Hobbs field. However, the Dry Creek field of Carbon County, Montana, contributed over 5000 bbl. of; new oil production. Sixty-two wells were abandoned during the year but of this number only 10 promising structures were nonproductive. The remaining 52 wells had little to recommend their drilling from a structural or strati-graphical standpoint. Eighty-eight wells were suspended in the region' during 1932 before the tests had reached their individual objective horizons. Many of these suspensions were due to financial difficulties and it is possible that several of the operations may be resumed at a later date. At the close of the year, 54 wells were actively drilling, 54 were shut down and there were 20 rigs and locations in the five Rocky Mountain states. The accompanying table gives details of drilling and production.

THIS paper will include a brief discussion of Prof. Howe's paper on The Supposed Reversal of Inheritance of Ferrite Grain Size from that of Austenite.1 The general subject of grain refining in steel and iron will also be treated. The conclusions reached are stated in the following hypotheses which are discussed more in detail below. 1. The ferrite grain size in pure iron, the ferrite and pearlite grain size in hypoeutectoid steel, the pearlite grain size in eutectoid steel and the cementite and pearlite grain size of hypereutectoid steel are not inherited from the grain size of the mother austenite. 2. The only structural feature that is generally inherited from the austenite of hypo- and hypereutectoid steels on cooling through their transformation ranges is the position of the excess ferrite or cementite at the austenite grain boundaries, sometimes causing complete and sometimes incomplete networks which outline the old austenite grain boundaries. Rapid cooling through the transformation range will cause the non-inheritance of this structural (network) feature. 3. The austenite grain boundaries themselves are nearly always effaced in all steels and also in pure iron during the Ar transformations. 4. The grain-size refining of steel and iron is brought about by the combined. effect of non-inheritance of the transformation products on either heating or cooling, i.e., the austenite transformation .products do not inherit their grain size from the austenite on cooling through the transformation range for does austenite inherit its grain size from the products which form austenite on heating. 5. In general, in both iron and carbon steel the larger the austenite ,grain size, the larger will be the grain size of the transformation products on cooling. This, of course, assumes all other conditions constant except the austenite grain size. An exception is found to this general rule in very pure iron such as electrolytic iron. 1n this instance small austenite grains may form very large ferrite grains on cooling through Ar3.

THE improvement, in the quality of cast iron by means of alloy additions has been a metallurgical accomplishment of recent years. Work in this field has shown that chromium is one of the most effective of such additions but, in general, the influence of chromium has been studied only in. connection with other alloying additions, with irons other than foundry irons, or with relatively high percentages of chromium. The present study was initiated for the purpose of determining the influence of small additions of chromium (0.25 to 1.00 per cent) on the quality and resultant properties of cast irons of various foundry grades. The effect of small chromium additions on cast iron was investigated with particular reference to casting characteristics, hardness vs. section, strength, machinability, heat resistance and structure. MATERIAL TESTED Three separate types of cast iron were investigated as to the effect of small chromium additions. The first series of these irons was prepared from remelted foundry cast iron at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, and the other two -series consisted of cupola melts made under usual operating conditions. The first series was made by melting 30-lb. charges of foundry scrap iron containing - 2.86 per cent carbon, 2.72 silicon, 0.50 manganese, 0.062 sulfur and 0.794 phosphorus in a carbon resistance furnace. The chromium was added as high-carbon ferrochrome just before pouring. The irons were cast at approximately 1250° C. (2282° F.). The analysis and physical properties of these irons are given in Table 1, test 1. The second set of cast irons was made in a cupola in accordance with normal practice, 'the charge containing approximately 42 per cent steel scrap and the chromium additions being made to the ladle. Analysis and tests of these heats are shown In Table 1, test 2. A small amount of copper was present in heat C of this series.

INTRODUCTION. A LARGE number of papers and reports dealing with the coalfields of Montana have been published + during the last 30 years, but the information is much scattered, appearing in many technical and scientific journals and in government reports, in many cases inaccessible to those most interested. In recent years, especially since 1905, ,our knowledge of the geology and coal contents of the important fields of the State has been much increased. Fairly specific and detailed information is. at hand on all of the principal coal-bearing areas. The fields for which data are not at hand are small and inaccessible, and their omission will not materially affect an estimate of the coal resources of the State, viewed as a whole. The paper here presented is a summary of existing information, all sources having been freely utilized in its preparation. The viewpoint adopted is that of the geologist, rather than that of the engineer or colliery operator, because by far the greater portion of the coal areas present have had only the most meager development, making information that, will aid in prospecting and opening the at present little used coal lands of paramount importance to those interested in the coal fields of the State.

On the banks of Huzzah Creek there is a roadhouse where a group of Ozark folks were whiling away a Sunday afternoon last spring. "How about some of that 'Who Broke the Lock Off the Hen House Door,' " suggested Spinny. The old man obligingly picked up the fiddle and began the sprightly tune. His long, seamed face had ruddy cheeks and a grey stubble jaw. A thick fedora was pushed back off his scraggly hair and he wore a heavy jacket. It was 73 degrees fetchin up for 75 on that May afternoon, so naturally he sweated. The Ozark is fiddling country. The natives, to whom a half dollar looks as big as a manhole cover, put great store by fiddling, along with the other fine things of life such as fishing and horse raising. On the wooded hills, 1200 to 1700 ft above sea level, there are numerous tumbling streams with plump fish, and in clearings along the roller coaster roads are long-legged, frisky looking horses. People in the Ozarks have a reputation for self-reliance. However, they are cheery and friendly to strangers. Trespassers are very seldom shot at-except if they do something wrong or by accident.

The term lineage was first introduced by Buergerl to denote dendritic branches, grown from a crystal nucleus during solidification from the liquid, with imper- fections in alignment of the order of 10 : to 10-4 cm. These imperfections are associated with distortions of the dendrites caused by the subsequent solidification of the inter-dendritic filling and are illustrated in Fig I. Buerger etched zinc single crystals made by the Bridgman3 method to develop this dendritic pattern and show lineage microscopically. Since maximum crystal growth in face-centered cubic metals occurs along the [IT] directions,2 lineage would appear in copper as small deviations of dendritic branches from these directions. Elam4 and others5"8 reported etching effects resulting from coring along the cube face traces of various copper alloy crystals. These traces were used by Samans8 to orient single crystals. Williamson9 noted a "lined structure (in alpha brass single crystals) consisting of an ordered arrangement of etch pits" which were probably traces of {IOO} planes but somewhat uncertain because they were never straight (that is, apparently lineage). Greningerl1 described the distortion and multiplicity of Laue spots in back reflection X ray photograms of copper single crystals showing lineage. The present investigation -includes metal-lographic, X ray, and property studies of lineage in large grain and single crystal specimens of copper. Preparation of Specimens specilnens 10 in. long 35 1/2 in. diam of oxygen-free copper (o.F.H.c.) (99.985 pet) were' melted vertically in graphite crucibles under an atmosphere of commercial nitrogen purified through a gas train including sulfuric acid, potassium chloride, magnesium chiorate, hot copper chips and phosphorus pentoxide. After a temperature of 1200°C had been maintained for 1/2 hr, the furnace was turned off and the specimens cooled at a rate of about 150°c an hour' This method of direct solidification was used by Greningerlo to produce single crystals with marked lineage and in this investigation produced a fair yield of single crystal specimens in

SINCE 1950, when perhaps two or three cyclones were being tested in Arizona, the number in use has grown to about 100. Most of these have come into operation within the last two or three years, and according to information supplied by various mining companies, the number will continue to grow for several years more. In mills that have been recently constructed, cyclones dominate the fine classification field, removing grit from lime slurries, producing smelter flux, reducing concentrate thickener overloads, classifying molybdenite in grinding circuits, and conditioning flotation feed. Four major copper companies are now testing cyclones in primary grinding circuits, and one concentrator soon to begin operation will classify entirely with cyclones. In at least two instances these versatile machines have been given a vital role in the construction of tailings disposal systems.

The following tables show the analyses of ores from nearly all of the mines which will produce over 10,000 tons of ore each during the season of 1890. There are many small mines now in the course of development, some of which may become large producers. Many of the mines produce several different grades of ore, but the analyses given in the tables are fair averages of ore such as the respective mines can deliver. Most of these analyses were obtained from the agents of the respective ores, and are averages of the season of 1889. One can state positively that over 75 per cent. of all the iron-ores of the Lake Superior district will average over 60 per cent. of metallic iron. During the past 34 years this region has produced about 48,137,421 tons of ore, the different districts contributing about as follows: Marquette District,. 29,754,057 Menominee " .10,415,859 Gogebic " . 6,622,194 Vermilion " . 2,342,991 Miscellaneous,. .. .. 2,320 In the year 1889, the product of all the districts was nearly '1,300,000 tons. The product of the entire region for the season of 1890 may exceed 9,000,000 tons. This large amount of ore is shipped to the lower lake ports, from Escanaba, Marquette, Two Harbors and Gladstone.
