Substructures in explosively deformed and annealed ß brass have been examined by electron microscopy. In the explosively deformed condition, the structure contains a large density of straight screw type dislocations. Subsequent annealing up to 300oC produces low angle boundaries, which are characterized by superlattice dislocations, and expanded and contracted nodes. Evidence is given where two a(111) superlattice dislocations combine to form two a(001) superlattice dislocations. It is also shown that annealing at 400°C the networks disappear and that quenching from 400" C produces square and circular prismatic dislocation loops that lie on (100) and (111) planes, respectively. THE purpose of this work was to determine the effects of explosive deformation and subsequent annealing in a superlattice using electron microscopy. One of the first observations of explosively deformed structures was made by Hornbogen1 on a iron. Hornbogen found that screw dislocations were most prominent in the explosively deformed structure. He explained this result by suggesting that the edge components of dislocation loops move with the velocity of the shock front leaving a trail of extended screw components. Kressel and Brown2 observed explosively deformed Fe3A1, which is basically a body-centered type of superlattice in terms of dislocation geometry, and found that, as in the case of iron, screw dislocations were most prominent. It was also observed2 that, in cold-rolled and explosively deformed nickel, screw dislocations did not predominate, but rather a uniform network of dislocations was present in which the orientation of the dislocations was random. (Cell structures also have been observed by Nolder and Thomas3 for copper and by Johari and Thomas* for nickel). Kressel and Brown2 discussed the difference between dislocation morphology for bee and fee metals in terms of dislocation mobilities. They suggested that edge dislocations have a greater mobility than screw dislocations in bee metals but not in fee metals. Thus, the idea offered originally by Hornbogen1 is not valid since it should apply equally to fee and bee systems but does not. The results of recent work by Mikkola and cohens on explosively deformed Cu2Au are consistent with other observations for fee metals. They found that dislocations were randomly arranged but there was no significant cell formation. At high shock pressures, deformation twins are produced in fee metals.' High pressures in bee metal should induce the bee — fee transformation while the metal is under pressure. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The Cu-Zn alloy used in this work contained 51.4 wt pct Cu. An aluminum single crystal cold-rolled from (110) [1121 essentially retains its initial orientation after 99.6 pct reduction in thickness. The orientation of the recrys-tallized grains of this material can be described in terms of crystallographic rotations about principal poles of deformation texture. DURING the study of the recrystallization of a copper single crystal cold-rolled from a (110) [112] initial orientation, the orientation of the re-crystallized grains could be derived by a 30" rotation of the orientation of the cold-rolled matrix about its <111> poles.&apos; The present investigation was undertaken to extend the work done on copper&apos; to an aluminum crystal also cold-rolled from a (110) [112] initial orientation. Experimental Procedure The procedure of this experiment was similar to that reported for copper.&apos; An aluminum (99.998 pct) single crystal rod* 1 % in. in diameter was grown in back-reflection technique.&apos; The specimen (1.20x 1.004x0.6787 in. thick) was then rolled along the [112] direction. The final thickness was 0.0028 in., giving a reduction in thickness of about 99.6 pet. Specimens were cut from the rolled strip with scissors, and approximately in. of disturbed metal was removed with Tucker&apos;s reagent. The rolling edge remained intact. The specimens were sandwiched between two graphite plates and annealed in a lead or lead alloy bath which was electrically heated. Pole figures were constructed using the techniques previously described.&apos; Specimens were electrolytically polished4 and etched with 47 pct HNO8, 50 pct HC1, and 3 pct of 48 pct HF. The electrolytic polishing method and etching reagent employed for aluminum specimens were not entirely satisfactory and the microstruc-tures could not be studied in any detail. Results and Discussion The octahedral pole figure of cold-rolled aluminum strip is plotted in Fig. 1. The <111> poles spread in the transverse direction approximately 8" for the highest intensity areas. The spread in the transverse direction can be related to a rotation about two <110> directions lying in a plane containing the rolling direction and rolling plane normal. The two <110> directions and a scale of rotation for the <111> poles are shown in Fig. 2. The amount of rotation is consistent for three of the four <111> poles, about 35" to 40". I 2] STEPHEN ROYCE, * Crystal Falls, Mich.Having examined and reported upon the Steep Rock Lake property and vicinity on several occasions for clients, and having kept in touch with the operation from 1938 on, the writer offers the following discussion of the valuable paper by Messrs. Roberts and Bartley, which was so kindly prepared in response to the writer&apos;s earnest request, made as a member of the Committee on Mining Geology. ORIGIN OF THE ORES The writer wishes to express complete agreement with the authors that the origin of these deposits was replacement action by hot ascending sulphide solutions of igneous origin, gaining access via the limestone and dolomite breccia channels, and acting mainly to replace the dolomite and limestone breccia with hematite and hydrated hematite. Some replacement in adjoining greenstones and tuffs by the same solutions may also have taken place, but the latter occurrences may represent replaced iron formations originally bedded in with the volcanics. Iron formation in the same relationship to volcanics is extensively developed on the western Menominee Range of Michigan, in the Middle Huronian belts; also appears in similar relations on the Vermilion Range; and is abundantly exposed in the same stratigraphic position no farther away than the southeast arm of Steep Rock Lake itself. Furthermore, the writer&apos;s classification of drill cores, made June 11, 1938, on the prop¬erty, contains the following, for hole 8, in the original strike of the A ore body: "332-342 ore; 342-350 much-leached sugary chert with thin ferruginous slate bands." This is a typical iron formation. The ore in this first group of holes (Numbers 6 to 13, incl.) is described in the writer&apos;s 1938 notes as follows: "The ore is hard, massive hematite with some limonite, and shot through with many small vugs." The breccia forms in the float ore and in the drill samples were also noted. As a field classification this does not check badly with Professor Schwartz&apos;s microscopic work. Notes supplied by Mr. Neeland, then geologist at the exploration, show: "Hole 23 has some iron formation, not logged yet." It appears therefore that there is some iron formation at the exploration, much iron formation in similar stratigraphic position in the vicinity, and iron formation similarly located as to volcanics on the Vermilion and western Menominee Ranges. Certain of the holes, notably Holes 25 and 27, showed some specular hematites resembling those known to be formed from cherty iron formation elsewhere. Hence the writer concludes that at least a small part of the Steep Rock ores results from replacement of iron formation. By far the greater part of it is, as the authors say, clearly a replaced limestone and dolomite breccia, with the breccia outlines still preserved in much of the ore, and all of the replacement is by hot ascending waters. The self-diffusion coefficients for a iron have been deternzined between 980° and 1167° K using Fe55 as the tracer. With decreasing temperature the diffusivity was found to decrease more rapidly than predicted by the Arrhenius equation in the region of the Curie temperature. The diffusion coefficients obtained well above the temperature of the magnetic transformation are more precise ard differ substantially from all the previously reported values. In the temperature region beginning at least 50" above T,, the diffusion coefficient is given by D = 118 (±2) exp 1 HE self-diffusion coefficients for a iron have been reported previously as the result of four independent investigations The general lack of agreement and the poor precision of most of the previous work prompted the redetermination by the present authors. The possible effect of the onset of ferromagnetism upon the diffusivity5 provided an additional impetus for this investigation. The earlier measurements of Birchenall and Mehl1 gave low values for the diffusion coefficient at temperatures below the Curie temperature, Tc. However, the precision of these measurements is not sufficient to establish an indisputable correlation between the low values and the magnetic transformation. The results of this investigation along with all the previous ones are shown in Fig. 1. EXPERIMENTAL Small rectangular samples, approximately 1 by 0.5 by 0.3 cm, of high-purity iron (Vacuum Metals Corp., "Ferrovac") are first heated in hydrogen at 900°C for24hr in order to remove possible trace amounts of dissolved carbon and oxygen. METALLURGISTS - or at least metals - have been of central importance in most of the inventions that have shaped the course of man&apos;s history. From the first Bronze Age tools to the iron armor of the Roman soldier, the cannon, cast type for printing, the steam engine, the electric motor and modern electronic devices, technological progress has revolved around some particular property or comb nation of properties selected from the metallurgist&apos;s repertory. The recent utilization of the energy of the atomic nucleus (currently for military purposes alone but with great constructive implications for the future) is no exception to this, although the use of uranium and plutonium in metallic form is of secondary importance, since the significant properties are those of the nucleus and not of the electrons responsible for metallic behavior. THE METALLURGIST AND ATOMIC ENERGY The metallurgist has a role of central importance to play in the future development of atomic energy. Not only must he make and shape the fissionable materials themselves, but he must also develop auxiliary materials to withstand the extreme conditions imposed on nuclear reactor components by the high heat-transfer rates needed for efficient utilization of the fuel and by the perplexing but interesting effects of radiation on the structure and properties of materials. It is doubtful if there is currently any other field potentially more rewarding to a young metallurgist. Quite apart from the all important but relatively short-range considerations of national security is the vision of the effect on civiliza-

DENSE-MEDIA processes utilize the familiar laboratory float-and¬-sink procedure on a commercial scale. Just as wood chips float on water and sand sinks, so coal floats and refuse sinks when placed in a medium intermediate in specific gravity between the coal and refuse. Liquids intermediate in specific gravity between coal and refuse used in commercial plants are of four types: (1) Organic liquids of high specific gravity-halogenated hydrocarbons; (2) dissolved salts in water; (3) pseudo liquids obtained by suspending solids, such as sand, in water, and (4) fluidizing a mass of sand or other solids by air currents. Those most widely used for cleaning coal are solutions of calcium chloride in water and a suspended-sand pseudo liquid. Laboratory float-and-sink testing is an intermittent operation during which every opportunity is given for particles lighter than the medium to float and particles heavier to sink. Commercial processes are con¬tinuous, vertical and horizontal currents of the separating medium occur as either part of the process or unavoidedly produced by the intro¬duction of feed and withdrawal of products, so that the exact separation of the laboratory technique is not duplicated by commercial processes. However, separations close to the theoretical are obtained in commercial machines by careful technical control of the process. Most machines in commercial installations are crowded to get as much out of the equipment as possible, so that careful technical control is necessary to get the recoveries and grade of product desired. Sizes usually cleaned are plus %6-in. or plus 3-in. in the United States and plus 36-in. in Great Britain. Coal as small as 1 mm. has been cleaned in some experimental installations. The separation of coal from refuse in sizes finer than about % in. is made difficult by viscosity effects and hence at the present time cleaning is confined to the coarser . sizes. The problem of making a building unit combining the necessary physical and mechanical properties and good thermal insulation has been foremost in the minds of architects and ceramic and construction engineers for many years. This paper presents the results of studies on thermally expanding shales or clays to produce lightweight cellular products suitable for making building units. An expanded clay block suitable for building purposes should be large enough qo that substantial savings may be effected in labor costs in laying the wall. The permeability should be low and it should have sufficiently good "dry-wall" characteristics to permit exposing the exterior surface to the elements, and to permit plastering directly the inside wall surface. The thermal conductivity should be low and the mechanical properties should be adequate. Obviously, a unit possessing satisfactory qualities for constructing an - outside wall would be satisfactory for interior walls and for back-up purposes. The results of studies on bloating various shales or clays† and the properties of the expanded products are reported. In another paper1 basic factors involved in bloating of clays are discussed. Manufacturers of ceramic products, partitularly structural clay, may encounter bloating of the ware during burning, and precautions must be followed to avoid this phenomenon. About 1927 the C. F. Burgess Laboratories, Madison, Wis., while carrying on an investigation for the American Face Brick Research Corporation, conceived the idea of intentionally bloating clay while holding it in a restrained condition, with the hope of producing a unitary cellular mass. Work was carried on until about 1931, when studies were terminated because of business conditions. These studies were continued later by The Western Brick Co., Danville, Ill., which developed a process of "inwardly expansive bloating."² The major purpose of the latter investigation was to produce back-up tile to compete with concrete blocks made from Haydite or cinder aggregate. Haydite is a light-weight aggregate formed by heating certain clays or shales rapidly in a rotary kiln. While the investigations at the C. F. Burgess Laboratories or at Western Brick Co. were not carried far enough to lead to the commercial production of material for the construction of walls, particularly outside walls, they showed that certain clays could be thermally expanded and that it was possible to produce a material of low permeability with a large percentage of the total voids or cells closed. commencing in 1939, the Ozark Chemical Co. sponsored a research program at Battelle Memorial Institute for the Purpose Of determining whether it is technically feasible to make thermally expanded building units, and specifically to get answers to the following questions:

It has been observed that upon invasion of a sand containing oil or gas and connate water by mud filtrate the hydrocarbons are more rapidly flushed by the filtrate than is the connate water.&apos; In time, it appears that the following displacement pattern emerges: oil (or gas) is being swept ahead by connate water which, in turn, is pushed by invading fluid. Eventually the connate water may have "banked up" sufficiently to form a zone of appreciable thickness leading the invading front. In the extreme case, Fig. 1 shows how the situation will develop.&apos; Immediately adjacent to the borehole (radius r) there is a zone, the invaded zone proper, where the connate water has been flushed out completely and which contains only residual oil or gas and mud filtrate. This zone (extending out to a radius ri) grades more or less abruptly into the next (thickness A), which contains only residual hydrocarbon and connate water. Beyond it, again more or less sharply bounded, extends the virgin formation with the original interstitial water saturation Sw. The various saturations are indicated in Fig. 1. The three zones generally will be marked by resistivity contrasts owing to their different fluid contents. As the connate water is usually more saline than the invading fluid, the second zone having a high connate water saturation forms a concentric cylindrical ring or annulus of low resistivity R, around the borehole.&apos;,&apos; It will be referred to as the "low zone." Fig. 1 shows schematically the resistivity profile. It is clear that the phenomenon of a low zone could not occur in invaded water sands. The presence of a low zone, therefore, would be a qualitative indication of a hydrocarbon-bearing formation. Granted that the phenomenon is real, if it were pronounced enough to be detected, one might thereby have a means of locating oil or gas in the ground. This is the aim of the "displacement logging" method.&apos; In any case, the presence of a low resistivity zone will affect the reading of electric logs. Using conventional log interpretation techniques, one must be aware of this and, if necessary, correct for it. Whether correction or detection should be the goal will depend primarily on the magnitude of the effect. The type of log which is likely to be affected most is the induction log. The current pattern of an induction log is concentric with the borehole. Any concentric ring of low resistivity, therefore, will tend to become crowded by current lines. This zone of maximum current density will obscure the relative contributions to the current conduction by other portions of a bed making, for instance, the contribution of the virgin formation less significant and thus detracting from the value or the induction log as an R, reading device. The present note is intended to ascertain the maximum possible effect of a low zone in the extreme case portrayed by Fig. 1 on three commercially available types of induction logs, sc., 5 FF 27, 5 FF 40 and 3 F 60. Type 5 FF 27 or 5 PF 40 is currently run in conjunction with a 16 in. normal and SP log. This combination is gradually replacing the regular electric survey (two normals and one lateral) as a standard log in many areas. On the basis of the scheme of Fig. 1 (sharp boundaries between successive zones), the thickness of the low zone may be computed for various amounts of infiltration measured by the ratio of invaded zone diameter to hole diameter D,/d. Referring to Fig. 1, we can set up a material balance for the water displaced from the invaded zone proper and the water present in the low zone. The volume of connate water displaced from invaded zone upon flushing by mud filtrate is: V1 = e p (r2 - r2) ? Sw . where c = bed thickness ? = porosity Su, = original connate water satu-ration. Since so many different curves have been published for the solid solubility of zinc in aluminum, it seems desirable to definitely establish the correct curve by two or more independent methods. The curve published in part I1t was based entirely upon X-ray measurements because the other methods employed at that time were not satisfactory. The present paper (the seventeenth of this series on high-purity aluminum alloys) describes the determination of the solid solubility of zinc in aluminum by the measurement of electrical resistivity at temperature and by microscopic examination. Since the publication of our part I in 1932, an investigation of the solubility relations in the aluminum-zinc system has been reported by Schmid and Wassermann2, who obtained their solubility results from lattice-parameter measurements on heat-treated and quenched specimens. The diagram that they published is shown in Fig. 1. In this investigation they also found by X-ray measurements that the parameter of the gamma phase changed continuously with zinc content and at such a rate that it would be identical with that of the beta phase at 60 atomic per cent zinc. It was concluded therefore that the beta and gamma phases, from the point of view of structural relationship, are one single phase. They also suggested a gap of immiscibility between 270" and 350" C. The complete boundary in this region could not be determined satisfactorily by the method employed and therefore was not shown in their diagram. Aluminum-zinc Alloys Materials Used.—Electrolytically refined aluminum3 was used in preparing the alloys for the work reported in this paper. Chemical analysis showed the following impurities: 0.004 to 0.005 per cent silicon, 0.006 to 0.008 per cent iron and 0.005 to 0.006 per cent copper. Also,

AS a result of the study of social problems to which so much thought has been given in this country and Europe in the last half century, many employers of labor have come to think that some provision should be made for their workingmen in case of injury. There has been a growing tendency so to administer the laws governing industrial pursuits in these countries as to add self-interest on the part of capitalists, to the plea urged by humanity, that every possible care should be taken to guard the workers from accident; but as no care can guarantee immunity, there is a necessity to supplement these precautions by some method of providing pecuniary aid that shall be available when disabling accidents do occur. It was once a favorite idea of theorists on political economy, that in the ideal state of society every man should take care of himself, and that the less care or control there was assumed by any man over others&apos; private affairs, the better; but this gospel of selfishness has had its day, and it is now generally recognized that in the existing state of affairs the stronger and richer cannot escape the duty of being to some extent, the keepers of their less fortunate brethren ; and, on the other hand, that an assumption of care for them involving to some extent an exercise of authority, is not a thing to he necessarily and always resisted. Out of these convictions, many efforts for the amelioration of the condition of workingmen have grown—which or one result have produced various plans which combine the con-

An investigation of the behavior of inclusions in steel several years ago1 led to the conclusion that some of the commonly occurring inclusions in steel have appreciable solubilities, particularly in liquid steel. In the belief that further study and clarification of this matter was warranted, a laboratory study of oxides in liquid steel was started. These oxides are generally the result of deoxidation treatment, and the basis of an understanding of their behavior must be, therefore, the behavior of the deoxidizer in liquid iron. The Fe-Si-O system was selected for the first study, and the apparatus used and experiments conducted are described herein. Apparatus The apparatus is shown in Fig. r and the system is shown by diagram in Fig. 2. Furnace, A lmosphere Commercial hydrogen (1) passes through an orifice (2) into a manometric system that measures the tankside pressure (3) and the back pressure (4) in the system. A water trap (5) guards against excess tankside pressure. A by-pass with stopcocks (6 and 7) is provided, so that the hydrogen can be routed directly from the tank to the furnace if desired. When stopcock 7 is closed and stopcock 6 is open, the gas proceeds through the conditioning train, of which the first unit is a furnace (8) that contains platinized asbestos at 350°C. The temperature is measured by a thermocouple and potentiometer (9) and is controlled by a slidewire resistance (10). In this furnace fres oxygen is converted to water vapor. The exiting gas passes over a water bath (11) kept slightly below boiling temperature by an auxiliary heating unit (12). This unit also heats a surrounding copper coil (13) containing water, and the heated water rises through a collar (14)

This paper reviews recent developments in the application of classification practice to the origination of fine-grinding flow sheets and traces the history of the mechanical classifier from its initial application for separating cyanide process sands and slimes down to its present six or more distinctly different applications at copper concentrators; it undertakes to show also, by reference to diagrammatic fine-grinding flow sheets and accompanying operating data from nine copper concentrators in western North America, the advantages gained from improved classi-ficiation flow sheets at these properties in terms of reduced grinding costs, improved flexibility of operation or increased recovery. Comparison is only made between different fine-grinding flow sheets at a given plant and no attempt is made to compare different concentrators, on account of ore variations and differences in metallurgical objectives sought,. The adoption of the flotation process in recent years, and especially the development of selective flotation, has brought a demand for much finer grinding than formerly. This has caused much thought to be given to grinding efficiency, and today there is hardly a mill where the grinding flow sheet is not under close study and subject to frequent changes. When closed-circuit grinding was introduced into metallurgy some years ago, its value was recognized at once, and since then the combination of mills and classifiers has been regarded and operated as a grinding unit. Apart from variations in both the grinding and classifying elements of this unit, there have been many variations in grouping tried by different mills to suit varying conditions of ore and plant limitations. Although operators feel that in most cases their present flow sheets are on trial, and the data on present work are often incomplete, we have felt that a discussion of the progress that has been made and an endeavor to show present trends and their results should be of use to the profession. We have therefore prepared flow sheets of some of the larger mills with which we have been in contact and present them with available data as to their results, in the hope that they may be of service now rather than later when practice may have become more standardized and more complete records and analyses have been made. THE history of the froth flotation of coal is relatively short. The flotation process was applied to fine-coal cleaning about the time of the end of World War I. Coal flotation finds more widespread use in Europe than in the United States and is used on a commercial scale in nearly all major coal-producing countries in the world. In Fig. 1 the general arrangement of a froth-flotation plant at a British colliery is shown. GENERAL FEATIJIEES OF THE PROCESS Application The flotation process is applicable to the cleaning of the fine sizes, particularly minus 48-mesh coal, although it may be used on sizes as coarse as 1/8 in. Since most cleaning processes usually are not effective on sizes smaller than 48-mesh and certainly not effective on minus 100- mesh, the froth-flotation process offers a solution to the problem of cleaning these sizes. This process consists-of agitating the feed pulp with a small amount of reagents, usually 1.0 to 2 ½ lb. per ton of feed in the presence of water and air; the reagents help to form small bubbles that collect on the particles having a greater affinity for the bubble surface than for the water surface, in this case the fine coal, and the bubbles buoy these particles to the surface to form the frothor concentrate. Slate and shale particles remain wetted and suspended in the water to be drawn off as tailing. The frothers commonly used in coal flotation are cresylic acid, pine oil, and alcohols. More expensive frothers, used in ore flotation, work satisfactorily but do not compare with these cheaper reagents for over-all cost. Collectors- used are low-grade petroleum fractions, such as cheap, partly refined fuel oil, or lubricating oil, sometimes mixed with small amounts of kerosene. Birmingham - A City With a Future COURTING new industries is the time honored duty of the chambers of commerce; but Birmingham, until recently, has done its courting without the benefit of troubadors. This is all changed now for the iron and steel industry is singing an enticing song about steel priorities for new industries from Birmingham&apos;s own mills. Along with the increasing industrialization of Birmingham there has been a marked influx of industry into the Southeast and neighboring areas in the south central states which augurs well for business in Birmingham. This important stronghold of the foundry industry (consuming 95 pct of Birmingham&apos;s merchant pig iron in 1950) has been the source of important announcements about additions to steel ingot capacity. The virtual abolition of basing point pricing gives the Birmingham iron and steel industry an advantage in the South&apos;s new markets. This means more business for Birmingham, but the problem of raw materials supplies is posed.

For many years large mining companies were able to finance nearly all of their capital requirements from internally generated funds. However, during the last decade, funds needed for capital expenditures, dividends, and scheduled debt retirement have grown faster than cash flow. As a result the minerals industry has had to rely increasingly on other sources of funds. Getting the capital for new mining projects is a challenge, particularly for smaller companies. New methods of financing and new variations to old methods have been developed and more are needed. Commercial banks are short-term lenders. By policy their loans are limited to low risk loans-those made solely on the borrower&apos;s general credit, and secured loans where cash flow is sufficient to provide repayment within a comparatively short term. To maintain liquidity, banks prefer to make loans of less than seven years&apos; term. If a longer loan is needed an insurance company or pension trust may take the long-term part.

THE rate of the high-temperature oxidation of pure copper has been measured repeatedly by numerous investigators. It appears to be generally agreed: (I) that at constant temperature, after the initial stages of oxidation have been passed and the scale has attained a substantial depth, the film thickness increases in proportion to the square root of the time of oxidation; and (2) that for any given period of oxidation the logarithm of the square of the film thickness is proportional to the reciprocal of the absolute temperature of oxidation.&apos; These relationships are explained upon the basis that the rate of diffusion of copper to the external surface of the film is the controlling factor in establishing the rate of growth. Extensive studies have been devoted also to the mechanism and rates of the early stages of oxidation. There is thus available a reasonably well established theory of the oxidation of pure copper upon which to construct an explanation of the more complex oxidation of copper alloys. Few general principles have as yet emerged from the chaos of observations that have been reported in the field of the oxidation of alloys.2 It is evident, however, that the copper alloys may be divided into two main groups, whose oxidation characteristics are distinguish able. The first group, composed of the alloys with the noble metals, forms substantially pure copper oxide scales; the alloying element is concentrated within the residual metal, and sometimes particles of almost pure noble metal are found in the scales completely surrounded by copper oxide. In the second group, composed of the alloys of copper with the baser metals, the alloying element appears as an oxide in the scale, often in greater concentration than in the alloy itself and sometimes to the exclusion of copper oxide. The oxide scales of the latter class have been found to be made up of one, two, and sometimes more distinguishable layers of which the innermost is often metallic in character, composed of particles of the oxide of the alloying element embedded in essentially pure copper and known as the subscale or zone of internal oxidation. The need for a thorough quantitative study of these modes of oxidation is evident. Since it is apparent that several mechanisms must be cooperating to produce the complex oxide scales found on copper alloys, the analysis of the process into its several simple operations should prove instructive. Fortunately, it is possible experimentally to produce internal oxidation in the absence of an external scale; this permits the isolation and intensive study of one of the steps in the oxidation process. The active development of the vast East Texas oil field, the attendant effects of the rapidly increasing flow from its prolific wells and the efforts to bring order out of chaos precluded or dwarfed other oil development in Texas during 1931. In a paper by Dr. F. H. Lahee1 presented at the October, 1931, meeting, the early history of the East Texas oil field is described and the sequence of events in connection with its development and efforts to control its production up to Sept. 25 is narrated. At that time the Railroad Commission of the state reduced the production of the field to a maximum of 400,000 bbl. per day by restricting the allowable daily production per well to 185 bbl. By further reduction in the daily production per well to 100 bbl., the field was held below that maximum figure during the remainder of the year. Meanwhile, as a result of an injunction against the Railroad Commission, its authority in the field was superseded on Oct. 13 by the Governor of the state, and after that date production was controlled directly by his orders issued under authority of martial law. Suits to contest this authority were brought in the Federal courts and were pending at the close of the year. On March 5, 1931, as a result of the East Texas production, posted prices for Mid-Continent 40&apos; A.P.I. crude slumped from $1.07 to $0.67. As East Texas production continued to mount, posted prices in East Texas were reduced to $0.37 on June 3 and $0.22 on July 8, although in that field most of the oil was sold for much less, bringing the producer and royalty owner as low as $0.025 per barrel. Northeast Texas To the information contained in Dr. Lahee&apos;s paper, it can now be added that the East Texas field has produced over 105,000,000 bbl. and registered about 3700 successful completions during 1931. There may be some merit to the recent prediction that a large part of the field will have passed its flowing period by the middle of 1932 unless

IN discussing the problem of abnormal magnetic polarization, C. A. Heiland1? emphasized the unfortunate fact that our knowledge of the geological and physical conditions relating to such occurrences is very limited and that a more detailed insight into their physical causes would be extremely valuable for interpreting measured anomalies. He also pointed out that to arrive at quantitative physical formulas that would express the conditions that cause abnormal polarization many more occurrences of the kind would have to be recorded. The first part of this paper is a contribution to such descriptions.
