The yield drop that occurs in tantalum, Cu-AZ. and Ag-Al was investigated as a function of strain rate and at several temperatures. From the strain-rate dependence of the yield drop an activation volume was calculated and found to agree with that obtained from differential strain-mte tests. The temperature dependence of the yield drop can he explained in terms of the parameter temperature divided by activation volume. The yield drop is attributed to the rapid multiplication of dislocations during their motion. THE yield-point or yield-drop (upper yield stress minus the lower yield stress) phenomenon has been the subject of numerous investigations1-9 in both bcc and fcc metals. Also, there is no dearth of theoretical explanations10-20 to account for the yield-point phenomenon. The present explanations can be divided into two categories: the concept of dislocation locking and subsequent unlocking and the concept of multiplication of dislocations due to their motion. The Vottrell10,11mechanism of locking and unlocking, as applied to bcc metals, is the best known of the three proposed locking mechanisms. The two additional mechanisms, short-range order (SRO)7,16,17 and Suzuki-type locking,14,15 have been employed to account for the existence of yield points in fcc metals. The experimental evidence supporting the locking of dislocations, especially in bcc metals, is well-established. The dependence of the yield point on interstitial concentrations,' the kinetics of strain aging,2 and the observations by electron-transmission microscopy18 are some of these experimental results. The number of experimental observations supporting dislocation locking in fcc metals is not as extensive as in bcc metals. The unlocking of dislocations, which actually is supposed to account for the yield drop, is by no means well-established by experimental results for either bcc or fcc metals. The similar temperature dependence6 of the yielding and plastic flow is one of the experimental factors that cannot be explained in terms of the unlocking of dislocations. The mechanism based on the rapid multiplication of dislocations has been proposed by several investigators. 18-20 Johnston and Gilman19 have proposed a detailed model of yielding, which was later employed by Hahn21 to predict quantitatively the yield drop in iron. This mechanism was discussed in a previous paper22 and several limitations were pointed out. In the same paper it was shown that an activation volume could be obtained from the strain-rate dependence of the yield drop and that a correlation existed between the activation volumes obtained from the yield-drop tests and from differen-

INTRODUCTION In 1975 278x10 3 tonnes of zinc was consumed in the United Kingdom, of which 69.3x10 3 tonnes was obtained from secondary sources. Of this secondary zinc 37.7x10 3 tonnes was used in brass making, the remainder was used in non metallic applications - eg oxides and salts. Many forms of zinc-bearing wastes arise, for example as galvaniser's drosses and residues, fumes from ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical processes, and filter cakes from rayon manufacture and metal finishing. In the case of zinc-bearing dusts and fumes, the quantities available for recycle are at present restricted by the failure to collect them efficiently, hut environmental factors are leading to improvements in gas cleaning, with the result that quantities collected will increase and then exceed those required for the production of chemicals, so that some dusts may either have to be dumped or processed to metal. The recovery of zinc from steelmaking dusts is practised in W. Germany (1) and Japan (2) employing processes based on reduction in rotary kilns in order to produce sponge iron and a zinc- rich oxide suitable for feeding to the zinc-lead blast furnace. Although the zinc-lead blast furnace is the only zinc-making process used in the UK, no similar treatment of steelmaking dusts is carried out, a pilot scheme was tested by the British Steel Corporation, but development was abandoned for economic reasons. It appears to be cheaper to pelletise suitable dusts and export them for treatment elsewhere.

Deformation studies have been conducted at room temperature on single crystals of magnesium and magnesium alloys with thorium and with lithium. Single crystals oriented to suppress shear on the easily activated basal slip systems were deformed by plane-strain compression. Compression along the C axis was accommodated by {1011} banding. Compression perpendicular to the unconstrained c axis activated {1012} twinning, and, after virtually complete twinning, deformation continued by {1011) banding in the twinned material. Compression perpendicular to the constrained c axis was accommodated by the simultaneous operation of (1012) twinning against the constraint and (1011 ) banding. Although this orientation was favorable for {1010)(1210) prism and {1011}(1~10) pyramidal slip, these modes were not observed in pure magnesium or in Mg-0.5 pct Th. However, {10i0)(1~10) prism slip was observed in crystals of Mg-4 pct Li during compression perpendicular to the constrained c axis. Fracture in all materials occurred parallel to (1124) or {l~il) depending on the orientation and composition of the specimen. THE mechanical behavior of the hcp metals is strongly anisotropic. Although several slip systems have been reported the slip is cpmmonly in the directions of closest packing, the (1210),' and this does not produce strains parallel to the c axis. Hence the inherent anisotropy. The deformation mode most easily activated in magnesium at room temperature is (0001)(1210)- basal slip. Also {1010}(1~10) prism slip and {1011)(1210) pyramidal slip have been reported, primarily at elevated temperatures.2"4 However, at room temperature the shear stresses to activate the prism and pyramidal modes are roughly a hundredfold greater than that required for basal slip.'j4 Thus prism and pyramidal slip may be expected only under special conditions of loading. Strains normal to the basal plane can be produced by twinning, however. Many twinning modes have been reported for magnesium,' with (1012) twinning the most common and relatively easy to activate. Magnesium can deform by (1012) twinning when stressed along the c axis jn tension, but not in compression. In contrast, (1011) twinning is activated by compression along the c axis and not by tension. In addition to primary twinning, secondary twinning or slip can occur within the reoriented material of primary twins.' In general at least five independent shear systems must be active to bring about an arbitrary shape change such as that in the individual grains of a deforming polycrystalline material.' Because basal slip can_ provide only two independent shear systems and (1012) twinning can only accommodate an extension of the c axis, other deformation modes must be active in magnesium for an arbitrary shape change to occur. The purpose of this investigation has therefore been to study the various deformation modes in magnesium at room temperature, with special emphasis on those modes that are less easily activated. The effect of the alloying elements, thorium and lithium, has also been investigated. In polycrystalline aggregates, unambiguous identification of deformation modes is extremely difficult and the direct evaluation of the resolved shear stresses to activate them is not feasible. On the other hand, uni-axial tension and compression experiments on single crystals may not activate some of the- deformation modes because basal slip and/or {1012) twinning cannot be suppressed in most orientations. However, it should be possible to activate all possible deformation modes using oriented single crystals and plane-strain compression. Identification of active deformation systems and evaluation of the resolved shear stresses required to activate them should be facilitated. Wonsiewicz and Backofen have recently completed an investigation of the plasticity of pure magnesium crystals at various temperatures utilizing plane-strain compression and selected crystal orientations. This technique has also been used in the present work. The seven orientations selected for study are indicated in Table I. Plane-strain compression along the c axis (orientations A and B) should activate some deformation mode _other than basal, prism, or pyramidal slip, or (1012) twinning. In orientations C and D, prism or pyramidal slip would be expected to take place. When the compressive load is applied perpendicular to an unconstrained c axis (orientations E and F) the three slip modes should be suppressed but not (10i2) twinning. In orientation G, basal slip should occur.

FOR several years an investigation has been in progress in the research laboratory of The American Brass Co. to determine the thermal and electrical conductivities of most copper alloys of commercial importance and several of scientific interest. This paper contains such data on the binary alloys of copper with silicon, aluminum, manganese and nickel, and on a large number of ternary or more complex alloys. Some interesting general relationships between the thermal and electrical conductivities for all copper alloys at all temperatures are pointed out. The data for the copper-zinc, copper-phosphorus and copper-tin binary systems have already been publishedl 1,2 † except for the electrical conductivity at 200° C., which is given in the appendix of this paper. LITERATURE ON THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF COPPER ALLOYS The papers referred to above contained a summary of the figures available in 1929 for the thermal conductivity of copper alloys. There is given in Table 1 herewith a selection of the data that have appeared since that time. The measurements of Hanson and Rogers3 are particularly interesting since they cover a series of alloys in the alpha solid solution range and show the effect of heat-treatment. Their alloys were tested as annealed castings, and are not therefore directly comparable to the worked alloys measured in the present investigation, although the difference is small. Bailey's determinations4 were carried out on the alloys used by Lees5 in 1906, and extend his results to higher temperatures. It is most unfortunate that the alloys were not analyzed, for the approximate compositions given are hardly sufficient identification of the

The Holden mine operated by the Chelan Division of the Howe Sound Co. is on the east slope of the Cascade Range in north central Washington on the south slope of Railroad Creek valley at an elevation of 3500 ft. The mine may be reached by a 40 mile boat trip from the town of Chelan which is at the southern tip of Lake Chelan, to Lucerne at the mouth of Railroad Creek and an 11. mile bus ride up Railroad Creek to Holden. A11 freight and concentrate is moved over this route to Chelan Falls on the Columbia River which is on the railroad four miles below the town of Chelan. The mine is now producing 2000 tons of gold, copper, and zinc ore per day which is treated in the Holden mill. Gold-copper and zinc concentrates are made, the first of which is shipped to Tacoma, Wash., and the latter to Kellogg, Idaho, for smelting. Ore is broken by long-hole blasting using the Noranda system which has been modified to meet local conditions. Until recently, blastholes have been drilled by diamond drills. Now a partial substitution of percussion drill holes, drilled with tungsten carbide insert bits, is being made. Geology The ore body occurs as a replacement deposit in a highly metamorphosed series of sedimentary rocks, mainly gneiss and schists, in a shear zone several hundred feet in width and of undetermined length. Commercial ore has been found in mineable widths of 25 to 100 ft for approximately 2500 ft along its strike. The commercial minerals are chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and gold. During the period of mineralization considerable silicifica-tion took place giving the ore an abrasive drilling characteristic. Following the period of mineralization, numerous dikes were introduced into the ore body. The earlier ones were of granite composition having a width of a few inches up to 80 ft. These were followed by much younger, fine grained basic dikes which usually do not exceed 2 ft in width. Development of Percussion Blasthole Drilling Equipment Test work with the 1½-in. tungsten carbide bit was carried on in development headings for several months early in 1947. The short life of the bits, because of gauge loss caused by the abrasive nature of the rock, prevented its adoption for this use. However fast drilling speed and ability to drill a long uniform hole suggested its use for drilling blastholes in competition with diamond drills as diamond costs were steadily increasing and exper-ienced drillers were difficult to obtain. The 1½-in. bit was the largest available at the time initial test work was started with sectional steel. The 1½-in. hole limited the diameter of the steel thread and coupling which could be used. Type F couplings were first used but because of the small thread section excessive breakage of the steel was experienced. Type H couplings were tried next. In order to use this coupling which is 15/8 in. in outside diameter, it was reduced to 1 3/8 in. giving 1/8 in. clearance between the coupling and the hole. Rod breakage at the thread was substantially reduced but some coupling breakage was experienced, however the overall performance was considered satisfactory (see Fig 1 for illustration of coupling and thread). Early test work with the 1½ in. bit indicated machines of piston diameters larger than 255 in. would cause inserts to loosen or break. It was found however that the additional weight of the sectional steel cushioned the blow enough to prevent bit failures when 3-in. Leyners were used. Rods used with the 1½-in. bits were 7/8 in. q. o. for sectional steel and 1 in. q. o. for all chuck pieces. In May 1948, 2-in. tungsten carbide bits became available and test work was immediately started. The 2-in. hole approximated the AX (1 15/16 in.) diamond drill hole which was being used exclusively for blastholes and permitted their substitution for diamond drill holes in a ring without alteration of pattern, burden, or explosives. Hydrofluoric-hydrochloric acid mixtures have been successfully used to stimulate sandstone reservoirs for a number of years. Hydrofluoric acid (HF) has a specific reactivity with silica which makes it more effective than HCl for use in sandstone. Kinetics of the reactions of HF have been studied to determine the related effects of reservoir composition, temperature, acid concentration and pressure on the spending rate of HF. Secondary effects from by-product formation are noted and described. Predictions are made concerning the improvement in productivity resulting from HF treatment of skin damage. The kinetic order of HF reaction in sandstone was experimentally determined to be first order, i.e., the reaction rate is proportional to concentration. HF reacts faster on calcite than on clay, which, in turn, is faster than the reaction rate of HF on sand. Static conditions retard the HF reaction rate. As HF is forced into cores, there is a temporary reduction as a function of flow rate and acid concentration. Extensive deposition of calcium fluoride in acidized cores was not observed. Although some CaF, was defected, it was not considered a major source of damage in cores containing moderate amounts of carbonate. Other fluosilicates could be potentially more dangerous than CaF, in reducing permeabiliry. INTRODUCTION Hydrofluoric acid has been widely used in stimulation treatments since 1935, when mud acid was introduced to the petroleum industry. Originally, this hydrochloric-hydrofluoric acid mixture was intended to remove mud filter cake, but it has since been successfully applied to many other oilfield problems. Mud acid treatments have been unusually successful in sandstone reservoirs where hydrochloric acid is unreactive due to a lack of enough calcite in the formation. The relatively small amount of hydrofluoric acid present (2.1 per cent) reacts with sand grains, clays and traces of calcite which are generally present in sandstone reservoirs. Since hydrofluoric acid (HF) is the key to mud acid success, this research effort has been dedicated to gaining a more thorough understanding of the basic chemical and physical principles involved as HF reacts. Hydrofluoric acid's reactivity with silica makes it unique in application. Other mineral acids such as hydrochloric, sulfuric or nitric are unreactive with most silicious materials which comprise sandstone formations. A typical sandstone reservoir may contain 50 to 85 per cent silicon dioxide, more commonly called sand or quartz. Hydrofluoric acid reacts as follows: 4HF + SiO2 + SiFO + 2H2O The silicon tetrafluoride (SiF,) is a soluble gas, in some ways similar to CO2, and is capable of undergoing further reaction when held in solution by pressure. These reactions will be considered in detail later. Kinetics of the reactions of HF have been studied to determine the effect of reservoir composition, temperature and pressure on the spending of the acid. Secondary effects from by-product formation have been noted and described. The individual reactions of HF on quartz, glass and clay are reported. Mathematical correlations have been drawn, then applied to studies of HF spending in cores obtained from actual producing sandstone formations. The research reported herein is only the beginning of a continuing approach to better understanding and use of HF in petroleum reservoirs. THEORY AND DEFINITIONS Through the years, a concentrated effort has been made to understand the effects of many variables on hydrochloric acid (HCI) spending in limestone. Hendrickson el al., have given mathematical relationships for HC1 reactions which made possible the engineered approach to acidizing. The same variables—temperature, acid concentration, formation composition, pressure and permeability-porosity relationships—which affect HC1 behavior in limestone also govern HF behavior in sandstone. Insoluble by-products of HF reaction have been isolated and identified. Their effect on fluid flow has been measured under varying conditions in an attempt to evaluate the extent of possible damage and means of eliminating it. In general, HF follows the same reaction paths as HCI. It will react with limestone and dolomite with speed and ease. Thin sections of acidized cores show the reaction of HF with limestone or calcite faster than its reaction with either clay or sand. When HF reacts with calcite (CaCO,), theoretically, calcium fluoride (CaF2) is precipitated, and has been blamed as a major cause of reduced permeability. On the other hand, pH and pressure such as that encountered in an underground formation under acid treatment definitely retard CaF2 formation,' so the whole question of CaF, deposition in wells is a subject for study.

For alloys which are in practice heat treated to obtain increased strength, such as steels, duralumin, copper-beryllium, and others, the treatment usually involves heating to a relatively high temperature. At such temperatures the grain size of the product is largely determined by grain growth. Even in metals and alloys annealed merely to relieve work hardening, recrystal-lization is generally followed by a certain amount of grain growth. Thus, effective grain size control, which is often of great practical importance in manufacturing processes, depends on the grain growth behavior of the material used. Despite its importance, grain growth has been the subject of few investigations of a fundamental nature. The term "grain growth" has been used to designate a group of related, but distinctly different, phenomena. The two most important and best known of this group are illustrated by the following example. Curve a in Fig I shows the increase of the average grain size of a copper-beryllium alloy, containing 2 pct Be and 0.15 pct Co, with increasing annealing temperature. The time of annealing was 2 hr. The grain size was quite uniform in all specimens. The results of a similar experiment with an alloy containing 2 pct Be and 0.31 pct Co are shown by curve b It is seen that for any annealing temperature below T, the grain size was smaller than. in the previous case. Grain growth became slower with the higher Co content. This "inhibiting" effect of the higher Co addition was associated with the appearance in the microstructure of fine, light blue particles of the CoBe phase. Up to temperature T, the structure of the inhibited alloy (curve b) was just as uniform as the structures represented by curve a. However, after annealing at T or at higher temperatures, the inhibited alloy showed some extremely large grains (much larger than the grain sizes developed by the uninhibited alloy with low Co content) mixed with the small grains according to curve b. The presence of these mixed or "duplex" structures is indicated in Fig I by the vertical lines branching off curve b. The type of grain growth occurring in uninhibited Cu-Be alloys (curve a) has been most frequently and best investigated in brass. This type has been designated as "normal grain growth,'' while the grain growth phenomena occurring in inhibited materials were, at times, referred to as "abnormal grain growth." However, since the latter term has been applied occasionally to the phenomenon of critical recrystallization, which also results in large grains although by an entirely different mechanism, in the present paper a different nomenclature has been adopted in order to avoid confusion. Published data on the equilibria of carbon in binary Fe-C austenite with H2-CH4 and CO2-CO gas mixtures are used to obtain the constants of an equation repre -senting the activity coefficient of carbon throughout the stable austenite range of temperatutre mid compositiotl. Calculated values for the solubility of graphite are found to be in agreement with the best-published direct observations. Its heat of solution is 10,680 calper g-atom. The free energy of formation of cementite is culculated from the equilibrium compositions of austenite and of gas. Its entropy and heat of formation are also obtained. BASIC knowledge of the high-temperature properties and treatment of steels is contained in the Fe-C diagram and its extensions for the effects of alloying elements. The application of thermodynamics to the Fe-C system, with addition of alloying elements, can serve to simplify and systematize this knowledge. The points of beginning are the binary fee solution, austenite, concerning which our information is reasonably complete, and the binary carbide, cementite. Further studies must include the other phases of the binary system, a and liquid, and for these an accurate knowledge of the ? phase boundaries is essential. These studies should provide a firm base for systematic study of the effects of alloying elements on all phases of the system, their transformations, and precipitation phenomena. With the aid of the simplifying thermodynamic concepts of activity coefficients and interaction parameters it is to be hoped that the results of these studies will be amenable to computer solution thus making the information on multicomponent systems more readily available than would be possible in multidimensional diagrams. INTRODUCTION IN the study of metallographic specimens in the electron microscope, there is need for a method of locating the same field in both the light microscope and the electron microscope. This need arises chiefly from the fact that in the electron microscope the magnification and degree of resolution are so much higher, and the field so much smaller than in the light microscope that it is often difficult, if not impossible, to identify positively what is being observed. The difficulty is increased by the fact that, because a transparent film replica of the metal surface must be used in the electron microscope, micro-constituents can be identified not by their color but only by their texture and contours. For these reasons it is desirable to obtain a series of photographs showing the same field in both microscopes in order that the appearance of common microstructures and micro-constituents in the electron microscope may be identified and catalogued for future reference. The need for a method of locating the same field in both microscopes arises also when it becomes desirable to enlarge in the electron microscope for more detailed study a particular interesting structure observed in the light microscope. Using the standard polystyrene-silica1,2 replica technique, in which the silica film replica is fished from the ethyl bromide on a 1/3 in. diam 200-mesh specimen screen, the possibilities of locating a particular area on the film in the electron microscope are rather remote. The desired structure may be obscured by the wires of the specimen screen or unrecognizable at the high magnification. A solution to the problem would be provided if a specially designed specimen screen, containing an opening which could be absolutely identified and quickly located in the electron microscope, could be fastened to the silica film replica in such a position that the desired field on the specimen would be located at the identifiable opening in the specimen screen. The design for such a specimen screen, a method for producing it, and a technique for fastening it to the silica film replica are described below. DESCRIPTION OF METHOD The Specimen Screen A simple design for a specimen screen containing an opening easy to identify and locate in the electron microscope is one with two lines of openings at right angles in the form of a cross. Such a screen is shown in Fig I. The opening at the center of the cross is identified easily and can be located quickly in the light microscope and in the objective image of the electron microscope. The specially designed specimen screens for this work were produced in quantity by electroforming. BACKGROUND OF SURFACE MINING Surface mining refers to the process of removing the material (over- burden) overlying a coal seam and exposing the coal so that it can be loaded out and conveyed by trucks or other methods to the preparation plant or other facility. Surface mining has not always been important in the coal industry. In the early 1900s, almost all of the coal mined in the United States was mined by underground methods. In 1900, about 192 Mt (212 million st) of bituminous coal were mined and less than 1% was mined by surface methods. The development and use of larger equipment has allowed surface mining to gain prominence throughout the years. Table 1 shows the total production of coal by mining method in the United States for ten-year periods since 1920 and indicates the growth of surface-mined coal production. Surface mining will undoubtedly continue to account for a large percentage of the coal production in the US for many years because: 1) The capacity of surface mining excavators has continued to in- crease. Today, mining companies are using shovels (see Fig. 1) which are able to move up to 137.6 m3 (180 cu yd) in each bite and draglines (see Fig. 2) which move up to 168.2 m3 (220 cu yd) in each bucketful. 2) Increasing tonnage from the thick western coal seams is being produced by surface mining methods. 3) Surface mining has normally had lower costs and a better safety record than underground mining. 4) Surface mining normally recovers a much higher percentage of the coal reserve than can be recovered by underground mining. 5) Some coal measures can best be extracted by surface mining

LOADING efficiency depends on cycle capacity of the loader, conditions of the mine, and mine organization. Cost of operation is the final criterion. Two types of loaders are analyzed-the boom shovel and the tractor-excavator. Studies were made in an open pit at Kimberley, Nev., where shovels are the production units and the tractor- excavator is a clean-up loader. The report deals mainly with the analysis of cycle and output. Problems of pit organization are not acute. (Other studies included in the original report and omitted here covered tractor-excavator application underground.)

In powder metallurgy it has often been observed that shrinkage may occur in one direction and growth in another during sintering. Even in long-time sintering experiments the rate of shrinkage may be different in different parts of the compact. In the fabrication of some parts requiring a constant permeability it is even questionable in some cases whether pressing from one direction should be attempted. These observations require for their interpretation a more detailed study of green or pressed density than has heretofore been available. Usually average density measurements of the whole compact are made and in some cases carefully cut sections are measured. A different approach to the problem was first mentioned by Rakowskil and also used by Balshin.2 Balshin's diagram is reproduced in Fig I and schematically shows the result of pressing three layers of metal powder with fine intervening layers of graphite. The retarding effect of the die walls and a qualitative example of the density distribution is evident. More quantitative information about the distribution of density within a cold-pressed powder compact would be useful in showing the variation in density in as as influenced by the type of poKder, shape of die, lubricatioll during the process, and other variables. Furthermore, information about the cracking of cold-pressed compacts may be obtained from an analysis of the stress distribution within a, powder compact, and some information about the stress distribution can be obtained in turn from the derlsity and strain distributions. A more detailed report on some of the present experiments appears in reference 3. Present Investigation In order to ascertain the density gradients in cold-pressed metal powders, a deformable lead grid within the powder was employed. After pressing in cylindrical di" the ejected compact was radiographed, giving a pattern of the deformed grid. From the radiograph density and deformation from point to point is readily measured. From the radiograph strain distribution and stress trajectories were also determined. The latter also permits the determination of the coefficient of friction at the die wall. This technique indicates that the densest Part of a compact pressed from one side is at the top outer circumference and the least dense region at the bottom circumfercnce near the stationary plunger. For Some heights of compacts the density at the axis is such that the lower density is at the top rather than at the bottom. SO irregular a density distribution is due primarily to die-wall friction. As the ratio - diameter to height of compact is increased the die walls play a correspondingly smaller role. More uniform density
