Nothing is more important to life-plant and animal-than phosphate. Its compounds are essential to the energy functions of all living systems and for the formation of bones and teeth. Animals get their phosphate from eating plants and other animals, or domestically from feed supplements. Plants get their phosphates from the soil. Man's most important use of phosphate is for fertilizer; approximately 95% of the world's phosphate rock production is consumed by fertilizers. Most of the balance is processed in electric furnaces into elemental phosphorus, the important raw material for making industrial phosphates. Recovery of uranium from phosphates has been possible but not widely used. However, recent significant developments have generated interest in such recovery in the US and elsewhere. Phosphate occurs in all igneous and sedimentary rocks, and in all fresh and salt water. However, economical recovery is limited to deposits where natural concentration of the phosphate mineral has occurred. Occasionally natural concentration is great enough that the material can be used as mined; generally, however, the ore is low grade_ and must be concentrated. Phosphate rock is produced in 31 countries. Fig. 1 shows the location of major phosphate rock producers as well as some of the known phosphate deposits not yet in production. In the last decade the world phosphate industry has experienced steady growth. World production rose from 98 Mt of phosphate rock in 1973 to 140 Mt in 1982. Fig. 2 shows the growth curve of rock production and graphically illustrates the almost straight-line rise since 1945 in both US and world production. Table 1 gives the breakdown, by countries, of world rock production, 1974 through 1979. Table 2 shows US rock production by producing areas. Definitions of Terms Used in the Phosphate Industry Phosphate Rock: Commonly called rock in sedimentary deposits and apatite in igneous deposits. Those expressions generally include any mined, or mined and beneficiated, fluorine-containing calcium phosphate used as the raw material for the next stage of manufacturing. The average phosphate content in rocks is 0.1 to 0.2% P2O5, as documented by McKelvey (1973). About 200 minerals contain more than 1 % P2O5. However, the important mineral in igneous rocks is fluorapatite, [Ca5 (PO4),3 F], containing about 42% P205 and 3.8% F2; in sedimentary rocks the important mineral is francolite, a carbonate fluorapatite containing up to 2% molecular CO2. Both are in the apatite family of minerals. Most phosphate rock, whether beneficiated or not, is a fine-grained material. The expression phosphate rock has no relation to its phosphate content. For example, phosphate rock from Idaho used in the production of phosphorus may contain about 24% P205, whereas rock from Morocco may contain 36.6% P2O5. Phosphorite: A deposit of phosphate directly or indirectly of sedimentary origin, which is of economic interest. Improvements in the X-ray method of measuring liquid saturation and saturation distribution are presented. Two identical direct current amplifiers have been added to measure continuously the intensities of the X-ray tube output and the beam which has passed through the core under test. The ratio of these intensities is automatically recorded on a modified Brown Electronik Recorder. Arrangements have been made to drive the core automatically and in synchronism with the recorder chart so as to give a continuous curve showing the variation of liquid saturation along the length of the core. By determining the ratio of the two X-ray beam intensities simultaneously the measurements are made essentially independent of small fluctuation in voltage and current supplied to the tube. This improved technique has been used for investigating the fluid distribution along the length of cores and core assemblies when one fluid is displaced by another. Typical results of these studies are shown. INTRODUCTION In a previous publication' a method was described for measuring the oil saturation in cores which was based on the absorption of X-rays by the fluid content of the core. While that technique is capable of yielding accurate results, the original apparatus was not especially convenient for determining the fluid distribution along the length of a core. This was primarily due to the slow response of the amplifier and galvanometer and the necessity of making a point by point survey of the material under investigation. It was, therefore, not only possible for sections of the core having a variable or unusual saturation distribution to escape observation entirely, but changes in output of the X-ray generator between readings on the unknown and the monitor introduced errors in the measurements that could be avoided only by further stabilization of the source or by taking a large number of readings. This paper describes a method and apparatus for recording continuously and automatically the intensity of the X-ray beam that is transmitted by a core. The variation of saturation with time at a given section of the core may thus be found, or by scanning the core by driving it in synchronism with the recorder the saturation distribution may readily be determined. As indicated in the previous paper, the X-ray method possesses an advantage over the weighing technique in relative permeability experimentation in that the core need not be removed from the holder for the purpose of making a saturation measurement. Furthermore, the actual distribution of fluid and the effects upon that distribution of inflow and outflow heads may be investigated. And errors due to gas bubbles or loss of liquid that are frequently sources of error in volumetric methods of saturation determination are avoided. PRINCIPLE OF THE METHOD The energy in an X-ray beam that has passed through an absorbing material is expressed by the well known formula: E = E0, e-cd (1) where E, is the energy in the incident beam, µ the mass absorption coefficient, c the density or concentration of absorbing material, and d is the length of path of the beam in the absorber. The coefficient µ varies with the wavelength of the radiation as well as with the absorbing material. The output of an X-ray tube varies in an approximately linear manner with the tube current, but to the second or higher power of the anode voltage. Moreover, the quality or wavelength distribution of the radiation varies with the voltage.

This paper, embodying information acquired by the writer in his work in connection with the Geological Survey of Minnesota, is presented by permission of the State Geologist. Historical.—On November 16, 1890, the workmen of Captain J. A. Nichols, of Duluth, Minn., encountered in a test-pit on the northwest quarter of section 3, township 58, range 18, west of the fourth principal meridian, the body of soft ore now called the Mountain Iron mine. Hard ore, chiefly magnetic, had been known for many years on the Mesabi range, and explorations made by Mr. E. W. Griffin, of Minneapolis, near the falls of Prairie river in T. 56-24 and T. 56-25, and by John Mallmann, at the Mallmann explorations, T. 59-14, had revealed some hard hematite interbedded with quartzite and low-grade soft ore; but this was the first discovery of merchantable hematite on the range. Captain Nichols had been exploring more or less along the range for some two years. To him and to the Merritt brothers, of Duluth and Oneota, who, unshaken in Faith by the discouraging reports of explorers, miners, experts, and geologists, had persevered in the search for ore, great credit is due for the final success, and large rewards have accrued to them already.

IN 1903, T. M. and E. H. Alvord, of Marblemount, Wash., built a soapstone-grinding mill in the Skagit River Valley and are reported to have produced "ground talc" during 1904 and 1905, shipping to the paper mills in Wisconsin. Between 1916 and 1920, the Western Talc Co. built and operated a talc-grinding mill north of Mondovi, on the banks of the Spokane River, in eastern Washington, and sold powdered talc to the Inland Empire Paper Co. of Spokane. ? The most active develop-ment in recent years has been by two companies in the Skagit Valley-the Skagit Talc Company, Inc., which has been sawing soapstone block for the soda-recovery furnaces of the pulp and paper companies, and the Asbestos-Talc Products of Washington, Inc., at Burlington, which has been mining and dry-grinding a soft serpentine for the structural filler and insulation trade. Many prospects have been opened in the northern part of the state on both sides of the Cascade Mountains, and these activities undoubtedly are the forerunner of an industry that promises to attain considerable magnitude in the North Pacific States. At the present time, talc is imported from California for use as paper filler, and soapstone block from Virginia for use in the soda-recovery furnaces. A small market has been created locally for tailor and foundry:, pencils, stove grills, and block soapstone for art objects. The results of the present study, as yet incomplete, indicate that the use as a refractory and as a ceramic filler and flux can be expanded.

THIS paper relates entirely to the casting of brass under fluid pressure in steel dies. Die castings of metals and alloys of low melting point have been available for many years but the development of brass die castings has been relatively recent, occurring within the past five years. The successful development of brass die castings has resulted from the availability of alloy steels that would give satisfactory life as dies and the development of suitable die-casting machines. The melting point of copper is 1084° C. (1983° F.) and of a high brass about 900° C. (1652° F.), as compared to 327.5° C. (621.5° F.) for lead, 419.4° C. (786.7° F.) for zinc and 658.7° C. (1217.7° F.) for aluminum, temperatures that are indicative of the casting temperatures required for the various types of alloys, of which the melting points are somewhat lower than those of the pure metals.

Measurements of the electrical conductivity, the thermal electromotive force, and the deviation from stoichiometry by thermogravimetry were made on ferrous oxide (wüstite) single crystals as well as on poly-crystalline samples in the temperature range of -900" to 1330°C. In the region defined by T 2 1000°C and 1.05 5 O/Fe 5 1.10 the electrical conductivity was shown to be proportional to the sixth root of- the oxygen partial pressure and to be linearly dependent on the deviation from stoichiometry. The absolute Seebeck coefficient of single and polycrystalline wüstite was shown to be independent of temperature in the above region and a p to n transition of the Seebeck coefficient was observed at O/Fe = 1.09 in polycrystalline wüstite. Analysis of the results showed that the predominant defects in wüstite in the above region were doubly ionized cation vacancies. The analysis also ruled out the existence of complexes of the type postulated by Roth, except that below 1000°C there is some evidence of 'association of defects. Of the three oxides of iron (FeO, Fe3O4, Fe2O3) only FeO (wüstite) can exist within a wide range of the ratio O/Fe. This has been shown by several investigations of the phase diagram using for instance chemical analysis of quenched samples'-4 or thermogravimetric measurements. 5,8 Darken and Gurry's1 data for example in the temper- ature range 1100o to 1400°C show that the lowest O/Fe ratio obtainable for FeOl +. is about 1.045 and that the existence range extends to O/Fe = 1.20 at 1400oC. On the basis of detailed analysis of thermogravimetric measurements made by Vallet and Raccah6 the existence of three varieties of wüstite at elevated temperatures was suggested by these authors and by Kleman. It is well-established that wüstite has a NaCl structure with vacant cation sites.3, 8 From a neutron-diffraction study of wüstite samples quenched to room temperature Roth9 concluded that defects in wüstite are mostly complexes composed of two cation vacancies and one interstitial cation in a tetrahedral site. The atomic arrangement in the vicinity of such a defect is similar to that in magnetite, where each occupied tetrahedral site is surrounded by four vacant octahedral positions disposed at the corners of a tetrahedron, so arranged that each vacancy is shared by two tetrahedral cations. Thus there is an average of two vacancies per interstitial. Recent X-ray diffraction measurements made by Smuts10 on quenched wüstite samples confirmed the results of Roth's neutron-diffraction experiments. Roth's model of defects in FeO can be regarded as a solid solution of Fe3O4 in FeO; salmon1' used this defect model to calculate the activity of Fe3O1 in FeO at high temperature and claimed good agreement with the results obtained experimentally by Darken and Gurry.' Each missing cation in wüstite is accompanied by two trivalent cations, thus preserving charge neutrality. The "holes" which differentiate between the Fe 2+ and Fe3' states of the ions in octahedral positions can overcome the attractive field of the cation vacancies, and are then free to move through the crystal as charge carriers. P UBLZCLTY and engineers do not mix. In the very words of my subject, there is an apparent contradiction. In the past, publicity has been abhorrent to the engineer. It seems to be true that the engineer, because of his training or his background, has developed a state of mind which omits publicity. At any rate he has done a poor publicity job for himself. The average engineer is self-conscious; he ought to be class-conscious. If T should ask the men in this hall to get up one by one and tell who they are and what they have done, there would be an instinctive reaction in the mind of each man-a feeling that this was out of place. If I should ask each man to get up and tell something about his neighbor, I should find that each neighbor, once he got acquainted with the man next to him and understood what he was doing, would be as human and as generous-hearted in telling about his brother engineer as is any professional man.

Experiments of previous investigations have indicated that calcium-copper alloy, when used as a deoxidizer for molten copper, results in a sound copper casting of good physical and electrical properties. Braden-berg and Wiensl have obtained successful results in casting sound copper using calcium for deoxidizing. Masing2 has obtained deoxidized copper of high density and high conductivity by use of calcium. Pratt,3 in 1907, patented the use of calcium for the deoxidation and degasification of copper. Schumacher, Ellis and Eckel,l in 1929, conducted a series of experiments on deoxidizing copper with calcium. They concluded that so long as there is only a small percentage of residual calcium the mechanical and electrical properties of the copper deoxidized are not impaired, and the deoxidation is thorough. For this investigation, a copper-calcium alloy high in calcium and 10 variously deoxidized copper ingots were prepared. The investigation concerns itself with the casting properties and structure of these variously deoxidized ingots, their working and annealing characteristics, and the resulting physical and electrical properties of the worked materials. Preparation of Special Copper-calcium Alloy and Experimental Ingots For use as a deoxidizing agent, an alloy of copper and calcium with fairly high calcium content was prepared, by melting pure electrolytic copper in a graphite crucible in an ordinary gas-fired pot furnace. The molten copper was kept well covered with calcium chloride slag. Small chunks of calcium were wrapped in thin copper sheet, placed on the end of a graphite rod and plunged down into the molten copper and thoroughly stirred. Upon completion of the calcium additions the crucible content was poured out into a cake about one inch thick. Analysis of this alloy gave 4.4 per cent calcium. In planning modem-day mining operations, management needs to pass from the area of subjective decision-making to an area of objective decision-makirlg. Planning procedures currently being practiced by many mine managers depend primarily on common sense and trial-and-error methods which oftentimes never reach optimum solutions. For this reason, an attempt is made to provide an understanding of linear programming to solve production planning problems. More specifically, a linear programming model is proposed to solve the production scheduling problem as it was found to exist in the crushed stone industry. Optimal production scheduling is of prime concern here, since the industry has to cope with seasonal demands for its products. The solution, as determined through the application of the model, provides management not only with an optimal production schedule but also with the following information regarding the improvement of existing facilities: (I) the location of bottlenecks which limit production and profit; (2) the directions in which the company i fixed equipment should be expanded or modified; and (3) the evaluation of unused resources. Future trends in stone production will quite likely parallel those in the construction industry. Continued record expenditures for structures such as dams, highways, and buildings are the reasons for this accelerated growth. Production forecasts for the next decade are predicted to be around one billion tons with an approximate 7% annual increase. The problem of increasing production from 570 million tons in 1966 to 1 billion tons by 1976 offers no small challenge. This situation is further compounded by other problems and economic factors. Population expansion, government regulation, labor agreement, and changes in technology wd cause managers and operators to be confronted by many more complexities than characterize present-day operations. Some of these. problems and economic factors are: (1) In some metropolitan and other urban areas, easily accessible sources of stone are almost depleted. Transportation costs will be a prime concern of the industry. (2) Population growth has forced residential expansion to a point where many quarry operators must conform to urban and suburban regulations. (3) Government regulation in regard to air and water pollution, noise, and reclamation as well as zoning developments necessitate that crushed stone producers keep abreast of changing conditions and requirements. (4) The crushed stone industry operates under pressure of a highly competitive situation. Every company's objective is to retain a favorable marketing position by exercising great attention to production and marketing costs. This is rather difficult, since the crushed stone industry is one segment of modern mining which has to cope with a seasonal demand for its products. Among the problems posed here, the one of exercising great attention to production and marketing costs is of current interest to management. Under seasonal demand conditions, this problem creates further difficulties for managers who need to plan and forecast. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Various methods of Operations Research have been developed to handle a problem whose genesis is explained above. It is very seldom, however, that these quantitative means are used in practice by the mining industry. This paper describes the use of Operations Research methods to solve a production planning problem when demand is seasonal. The seasonal production planning problem is an important one because of the substantial costs associated with changing production, employment, and inventory levels to adjust to seasonal sales patterns. Most companies try to operate within reasonable levels of employment changes and hold inventories within storage capacities. In general, little or no attempts were made to develop minimum cosl schedules or to provide objective means to compare various production policies. The density of liquid plutonium was determined, by a pycnometm'c technique, from 664 to 788°C and exhibited a temperature dependence, which could be expressed as:. P= C17.63 - 1.52 x 10-"t] +0.04 g per cc where t = OC. These density values compare favorably with the values previously obtained by a technique utilizing Archimedes' principle. The apparatus and method were evaluated when the densities 0.f molten tin and bismuth were measured and found to be in agreement with accepted literature values. PLUTONIUM or an alloy of plutonium in the liquid state has been proposed as a fuel for a fast-breeder type nuclear power plant.' Since knowledge of the liquid density of plutonium is required for the proper design of such a system, this study was undertaken. In addition, the density and volume expansion coefficient of liquid plutonium are of interest for comparison with these same properties of the six allotropic modifications of the solid metal. Comstock and GibneyZ were first to report a value for the density of liquid plutonium. The value for only one temperature, 665"C, was calculated from data obtained by the radiography of the meniscus, Fig. 3. Recently, the density at a series of temperatures has been reported by Knight,3 who obtained his values by using a differential volumeter, and by 01-sen, Sandenaw, and Herrik, who obtained their values from measurements of the loss in weight of a tungsten bob immersed in the liquid. The general impression regarding the preparation of merchantable anthracite is that it is confined to a colossal, grimy structure, called a " coal-breaker." This name is a misnomer; for the desired result is not to break the coal, but to prevent its being broken. Preparation may be said to begin at the face of the chamber, with the mining and loading of the coal. Local conditions vary, not only ill the same field or basin, but also in the same mine, so that there is no fixed empirical rule governing the method of blasting or cutting coal. Tests should be made, when possible, to determine the explosive, or the mechanical coal-cutter, which will produce the largest percentage of what are locally known as " lump " and " prepared sizes " of anthracite. The prepared sizes are those mostly consumed for clomestic purposes. All other sizes might be called by-products of the anthracite industry; for they are not especially desirable, being the degradation resulting from the mining and handling of a brittle or laminated material. Being low in volatile combustible matter, anthracite burns most successfully when nearly of a uniform size, permitting the easy passage of air through the voids. This accounts for the large number of sizes into which the coal is separated. Table I. gives the various sizes, the diameter of ring over and through which each size is made, and the usual purpose for which it is employed.

This truly remarkable machine was built on a preliminary scale in May, 1895. The first full-sized table was built by Mr. A. R. Wilfley, and was used in his own mill in Kokomo Colo., in May, 1896. The first table sold for installation was placed in the Puzzle mill, Breckinridge, Summit county, Colo., in August, 1896. The mill enthusiasts at first hailed it as the cure for all the ills that flesh is heir to in the milling line. A little later it was found to make losses which were serious, and on this account the table succeeded only to a limited extent in displacing the vanners of the gold-mills. Still later, mill-men in a number of districts throughout the country made special studies of the faults of the machine, and devised a number of ways of grouping supplementary machines to overcome as far as possible the losses, and at the same time retain the benefit of the extraordinarily large capacity accompanied by the production of clean concentrates for which the machine has become so justly famous. I hope to make an exhibit of some of these methods in an appendix to my book on ore-dressing which is now in preparation. These experimenters have not written up the subject, and if they possess all the facts they have not given them out for the benefit of the mining profession at large. The object of this paper is to obtain the facts and to present them so clearly that their bearing can be seen by all. To this end two complete series of tests have been planned. One (the present paper), to study concentration of galena in presence of quartz; the other (to follow shortly), to study concentration of chalcopyrite in presence of quartz. Hydrologic and economic criteria figure in many obvious ways in water resources development, but they are rarely linked quantitatively, and most of the applications are pertinent only to the case in point. In the preparation of a regional plan for the massive program of groundwater development in the Punjab, situations have arisen where the choice among two or more alternatives was made by analyzing the economic implications of critical hydrologic parameters. Two of these situations which are of more or less general interest are described herein. The first involves basic development policy, i.e., the question of whether groundwater development should be based on the demand of the economy, or the conservation concept of safe yield. The analysis demonstrated that mining of groundwater is clearly indicated for areas where alternative supplies are unavailable. The second problem involves integrating hydrologic data into an economic model to determine optimum well design. From an analysis of all pertinent factors, a simple nomograph was derived for determining well specifications on site during construction. The nomograph can be modified for use in any alluvial terrain. In the Northern Zone of the Indus Plains —the region known as the Punjab- Pakistan is proceeding with integrated development of water and land resources on a scale never before contemplated. The heart of the development plan is a massive program of groundwater development to supplement canal irrigation supplies and to provide drainage relief to the irrigated lands. By the close of 1966 about 2500 high-capacity wells were in operation and furnishing the water supply and drainage requirements for nearly two million irrigated acres. The development plan calls for the construction of a total of nearly 30,000 wells with an aggregate capacity of 120,000 cfs by 1980. This is part of an integrated program eventually affecting over 20 million acres of irrigated lands. [This development program is administered by the West Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) for which the firm of Tipton and Kalm-bach, Inc. serves as regional planning consultant for the Northern Zone. The material presented herein is derived from planning studies which have been made in connection with the preparation of a regional development plan for the Northern zone.] Pakistan is proceeding with this large-scale development of land and water resources at a time when she is at the threshold of an almost calamitous population growth. Furthermore, she is attempting this development at a time when most of her usable land is already occupied and her food demands exceed current production. Here in the Northern Zone is one of the largest continuous areas of irrigated land in the world, easily irrigated, with a warm, dry climate and ample potential supplies of surface water and groundwater. Except for an abundance of land and labor, other primary resources are lacking or in very limited supply. The agriculture sector so dominates the economy that only by means of an effective development of the agricultural resources can other sectors grow and contribute to a viable economy. Because of inadequate irrigation, farming here has not effectively participated in the twentieth century revolution in agriculture, and only by means of massive development of potential supplies can Pakistan catch up. Capital for any kind of mass development must come from the outside. But the overriding restraint to development of the land and labor resources is the availability of water. The design and construction of cross-country pipelines for fluids such as crude oil appears relatively simple compared to the complex problems encountered in slurry systems. Considerable effort has been expended in hydraulic research laboratories in an attempt to improve the understanding of slurry behavior. This effort has been rewarded with considerable success and is best illustrated by the large number of slurry systems now planned or under construction. However, slurry transport in pipelines is still, in many instances, more of an art than a science. In order to minimize the risk factors in the construction and operation of large scale slurry systems, studies are frequently conducted in pilot scale test loops such as the one at the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute. The pilot scale projects are designed to provide the basic engineering data necessary to design slurry transport pipeline systems. Usually three slurry solid concentrations are pumped at various line velocities and optimum slurry densities and velocities are determined. Critical velocities, friction head losses, power requirements, and so forth, are also determined from measurements and calculations. Wear tests are also strongly recommended and anticipated pipe wear rates in inches per million tons of solids reported.

The first use of graphite is lost in the mists of time. It was used by primitive man to make drawings on the walls of caves and by the Egyptians to decorate pottery. As early as 1400 A.D. graphite crucibles were being made in the Haffnerzell district of Bavaria. Through the Middle Ages graphite was confused with other minerals, especially galena and molybdenite. Two common names that are still used for the mineral are "Plumbago," meaning leadlike, and "Black Lead." The latter name implied that graphite is either composed of lead or at least contains a large percentage of it. Gessner is credited with having recognized it as a separate mineral in 1565, but its composition was not determined until 1779, when Scheele demonstrated that graphite oxidized to carbon dioxide, thus proving its carbon constitution. In 1789, Werner named it "graphite" from the Greek word "graphein," meaning to write. The United States has long relied on foreign countries for its graphite supplies. This reliance has been due more to the lack of suitable domestic graphites than to any particular preference for buying minerals overseas. Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) graphites were imported as early as 1820, and Madagascar graphites have been imported since the properties on that island were opened up about a hundred years later. Mexico has long supplied the United States with most of its requirements for amorphous graphite. Physical Properties and Classification Graphite is found in laminated, flaky aggregates disseminated in schistose rocks. It also occurs in veins and exhibits a foliated or fibrous structure. Graphite is a black lustrous mineral that crystallizes in the hexagonal system, with rhombohedral symmetry. The crystals have tabular form and are six-sided; the faces are commonly striated. The flakes have perfect basal cleavage and are opaque. When well crystallized, the flakes have a black metallic luster while the amorphous material is black and earthy, with a microcrystalline compactness. The flakes feel greasy. Graphite is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. It melts at approximately 3500°C and sublimes at about 4500°C. It is combustible in the presence of oxygen between 620° and 670°C, but is stable and chemically inert at ordinary temperatures.

Tensile data for coarse grained aluminum Polycrystals suggest that the "grain size" effect is not due to dislocations piled up at grain boundaries but rather is primarily a relative size effect due to surface crystals being weaker and less confined. STUDIES directed at interpreting hardening of poly-crystalline metals normally identify their strain hardening properties with those in some particular type of single crystal.1"4 The recent recognition in face centered-cubic metals of a nearly linear stage with rapid hardening occuring at comparable rates for both polycrystals and single crystals, suggested that the same process or processes determine both cases and hence that there exists some justification for the use of single crystals to understand polycrystals. Further evidence for the above view may be found by an approach initiated by Chalmers:5 By using bicrystals of controlled orientation it is possible to begin to assemble a polycrystal and also to study grain boundary effects in detail. In this way it has been found that a single grain boundary affects easy glide but not the subsequent stage II hardening.6 This result suggests that a sensitive way to observe grain boundary effects in polycrystals would be to vary grain size and measure easy glide. As will be seen, easy glide is only possible for coarse-grained samples, and hence the results will serve to fill in the gap in measurements between single crystals and bicrystals on one hand and fine-grained polycrystals on the other. One problem inherent in comparing single crystals with polycrystals is the uncertainty as to what slip systems are acting in a polycrystal. To compare the two types of samples, rates of shear hardeninn---L. on the acting -planes are needed. and these may be computed only if it is known what particular systems are active. The acting systems were examined for a coarse-grained polycrystal and it will be shown that the systems supplying the preponderance of slip can be determined with little ambiguity. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Twelve samples of aluminum were prepared by chill casting into a heated graphite mold, followed by annealing at 635° ± 5°C for 24 hr with an 8-hr fur- nace cool, and finally either etching7 or electropol-ishing.' The samples, with a 7 to 10 cm length between grips and 4.4 by 6.6 mm in cross section, were deformed at a strain rate of about 3 10 -3 . per min in a tensile device which has been described elsewhere.5 The composition was reported by Alcoa as 99.992 pct Al, 0.004 pct Zn, 0.002 pct Cu, 0.001 pct Fe, and 0.001 pct Si; nine samples were deformed while immersed in liquid helium and three in air at room temperature. The stress-strain curve for one of the samples (P-1) deformed at 4.2 "K has been reported previ~usl~.~ This sample was selected for determination of active slip systems. Eighteen of the crystals were examined by optical microscopy to determine the angles of slip line traces and by X-ray back reflection to determine orientation. By this means the slip planes were determined and the resolved shear stress factors for possible slip systems could be computed. Finally each sample was sectioned so that after etching, the number of crystals could be counted for each of ten newly exposed surfaces. The average of these ten values will be termed n, the number of crystals per cross section. Values of 11, varied from 1.9 (nearly bamboo structure) to 12.7. Sketches of typical cross sections appear in Fig. 1. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: SLIP SYSTEMS 1) Determination of Acting Slip Planes—The stress axis orientation and operative slip planes in eighteen crystals of sample P-1, as determined by slip line traces and crystal orientation, are summarized in Fig. 2. For one of the crystals two planes had a common trace. so that the traces alone did not distinguish which plane or planes were slipping. However it was found that the stress resolving factor for the primary system was 0.386, .while that for the most stressed system in the other plane (indicated bv the dotted arrow) is 0.138. It will be assumed tgerefore that only the primary plane acted. Since the orientations were determined after extending the samples 4 pct, the stress axes may be rotated from their original value by as much as 2 deg in some cases. Measurements of the electrical conductivity, the thermal electromotive force, and the deviation from stoichiometry by thermogravimetry were made on ferrous oxide (wüstite) single crystals as well as on poly-crystalline samples in the temperature range of -900" to 1330°C. In the region defined by T 2 1000°C and 1.05 5 O/Fe 5 1.10 the electrical conductivity was shown to be proportional to the sixth root of- the oxygen partial pressure and to be linearly dependent on the deviation from stoichiometry. The absolute Seebeck coefficient of single and polycrystalline wüstite was shown to be independent of temperature in the above region and a p to n transition of the Seebeck coefficient was observed at O/Fe = 1.09 in polycrystalline wüstite. Analysis of the results showed that the predominant defects in wüstite in the above region were doubly ionized cation vacancies. The analysis also ruled out the existence of complexes of the type postulated by Roth, except that below 1000°C there is some evidence of 'association of defects. Of the three oxides of iron (FeO, Fe3O4, Fe2O3) only FeO (wüstite) can exist within a wide range of the ratio O/Fe. This has been shown by several investigations of the phase diagram using for instance chemical analysis of quenched samples'-4 or thermogravimetric measurements. 5,8 Darken and Gurry's1 data for example in the temper- ature range 1100o to 1400°C show that the lowest O/Fe ratio obtainable for FeOl +. is about 1.045 and that the existence range extends to O/Fe = 1.20 at 1400oC. On the basis of detailed analysis of thermogravimetric measurements made by Vallet and Raccah6 the existence of three varieties of wüstite at elevated temperatures was suggested by these authors and by Kleman. It is well-established that wüstite has a NaCl structure with vacant cation sites.3, 8 From a neutron-diffraction study of wüstite samples quenched to room temperature Roth9 concluded that defects in wüstite are mostly complexes composed of two cation vacancies and one interstitial cation in a tetrahedral site. The atomic arrangement in the vicinity of such a defect is similar to that in magnetite, where each occupied tetrahedral site is surrounded by four vacant octahedral positions disposed at the corners of a tetrahedron, so arranged that each vacancy is shared by two tetrahedral cations. Thus there is an average of two vacancies per interstitial. Recent X-ray diffraction measurements made by Smuts10 on quenched wüstite samples confirmed the results of Roth's neutron-diffraction experiments. Roth's model of defects in FeO can be regarded as a solid solution of Fe3O4 in FeO; salmon1' used this defect model to calculate the activity of Fe3O1 in FeO at high temperature and claimed good agreement with the results obtained experimentally by Darken and Gurry.' Each missing cation in wüstite is accompanied by two trivalent cations, thus preserving charge neutrality. The "holes" which differentiate between the Fe 2+ and Fe3' states of the ions in octahedral positions can overcome the attractive field of the cation vacancies, and are then free to move through the crystal as charge carriers. Experience over a 3-year period in Bethlehem Steel Corporation's plants has demonstrated the reliability of open-hearth roofs of bonded sprung-arch constructzon with burned basic brick. The design principles lor constructing these roofs include a minimum hot-strength requirement for the basic brick, expansion allowances that extend the full roof thickness, structural members to control arch contour, and a specified minimum roof rise. The greater stability of bonded roofs is explained in terms of the basic stress patterns of ring constrution and bonded construction. PRIOR to the development of successful sprung-arch roofs of basic brick, the majority of open-hearth furnaces in the United States were operated with sprung-arch roofs built of silica brick. Although many silica roofs used on open-hearth furnaces were ring-arch construction, Bethlehem Steel Corp. used bonded-arch construction because of its greater stability. In ring construction, each ring of brick is separately keyed and comprises an independent arch with the straight joints between rings traverse to the longitudinal axis of the furnace. In bonded construction, the bricks are laid in rows starting from the skewbacks so that the straight joints run parallel to the longitudinal axis of the furnace. Each brick in a given row is laid so that it spans the joint between two bricks in the row beneath it. Thus, the transverse joints across the arch are broken and the arch rings are thereby interlocked or bonded. When basic roofs were first being developed, the basic brick that were available had low hot strength. Such brick could not be safely used in sprung-arch construction without some means of suspending them. With the development of higher firing techniques by brick manufacturers and the recently introduced direct bonded bricks with high hot strength, the use of burned basic brick in sprung-arch roofs became feasible. The availability of high hot strength basic brick coupled with the potentially lower cost and proven stability of bonded construction prompted Bethlehem's Research Department to study the possibility of using basic brick in bonded roofs. With the full cooperation of plant ceramic engineers and open-hearth superintendents, particularly in 3 years of fur-nace trials, we developed the design criteria for bonded roofs and the corresponding property requirements for the basic brick that are discussed in this paper. DESIGN PRINCIPLES OF SPRUNG-ARCH BRICK ROOFS Stresses in Fixed Arches. A sprung-arch open-hearth furnace roof is generally built on rigidly held skewbacks. The constraint of the fixed support at each end adds a bending moment to the horizontal and vertical reactions at the ends of the arch. Fig. 11 shows the positive direction of forces acting on an arch fixed at both ends. Fixed arches can be analyzed when the members are continuous and have elastic properties. However, brick are inelastic, and arches built with individual brick segments cannot carry tensile stresses. Therefore, for practical solution of brick arches, empirical formulas have been derived from elastic theory that place design restrictions on arch dimensions to avoid development of tensile stresses. McDowell2 cites three main conditions for stability in sprung brick arches: 1) the thrust line of the arch should be maintained in the middle third of the thickness to avoid tensile stresses and resulting open joints in inner and outer curves of the arch; 2) the angle between the line of thrust at any joint and a line perpendicular to the joint must not exceed the angle of repose between brick; and 3) the maximum pressure at any point must not exceed the strength of the arch materials at furnace operating temperatures. The first and third conditions are particularly important in designing sprung-arch basic roofs because of the comparatively low hot strength of basic brick. According to McDowell's equation, if the thrust line is maintained within the middle third of the arch thickness, the unit pressure is obtained as follows: where p = unit pressure in psi, F, = resultant thrust normal to skewback in pounds per foot, t = arch thickness in inches, and z = distance in inches of thrust line from arch axis. When the resultant thrust normal to the skewback acts along the arch axis, z equals zero and unit pressure is simply the thrust divided by the cross-sectional area. If the thrust line moves to the limits of the middle third of the arch thickness, beyond which tensile forces would develop, z then equals one-sixth of the arch thickness and the unit pressure is double that when the thrust line is acting

AS these annual occasions in honor of Henry Marion Howe continue through the years: there is progressively less likelihood that the lecturer will have had personal knowledge of Dr. Howe. The present speaker is one of those who unfortunately had no opportunity to come under the inspiring presence of this great metallurgist. A review of Howe's work shows it to cover a comprehensive range of interests and to evidence an impressive richness of detail. Not only was Howe at home in the laboratory, but he was familiar with the processes of iron and steel making and had a real understanding of them. His writings include much that is descriptive of processes with a wealth of material that is becoming of increasing historical value. He recorded his studies of the theoretical aspects of processes and published at least two process classifications, one in 1890 that was lengthy and somewhat theoretical, and a second in 1906 that was more of a practical listing. Wide as Howe's field of interest was, it is significant of the circumstances of his time that he gave- little consideration to raw materials or to their effect on iron and steel making processes. In 1933, Waterhouse, Howe lecturer for that year, presented a descriptive summary of the major steel making processes, and in 1946 Joseph discussed the blast furnace process. Otherwise Howe lectures have not dealt with processes as major subjects. In today's lecture, with no effort to describe the mechanical arrangements of iron and steel making facilities, it is proposed to examine the essential technological elements of the processes, to explore the inter-relation of these elements, and particularly to seek recognition and understanding of those factors which determine why certain processes are or are not used. The discussion of this lecture will deal with the major well-known large tonnage processes, with only such attention to processes of minor tonnage and special character as may be warranted for explanation by contrast. Subject to the errors of generalization and the shortcomings of condensation involved in presentation limited to a single hour, it is proposed to examine broadly but intensively those operations which convert raw materials into steel. It is an innovation for a Howe lecturer to discuss the raw materials of the iron and steel industry, but the changing circumstances of passing years intensify the influence of raw materials on processes and require the metallurgist to be alert for the process adjustments that may become advisable or mandatory. For a half century the metallurgical processing of iron and steel has followed a surprisingly straight path, but this does not necessarily mean that there are no curves in the road ahead.
