In recent years the constitution of the high-silver aluminum-silver alloys has been extensively investigated. Hansenl has reviewed the literature to 1935. More recently, Obinata and Hagiya,2 Hofmann and Volk,3 Taziri4 and Tishchenko5 have confirmed the general features of the phase diagram in the region around 25 atomic per cent aluminum. In this paper we present the results of high-precision measurements of lattice constants of the silver-rich alpha solid solution in the homogeneous range and the neighboring two-phase regions. These results are used to establish the nature of the solid solution, the identity of directly measured densities with those calculated from lattice constants and the homogeneity limits of the alpha solid solution with respect to three different neighboring phases. A study of the earlier investigations indicated that the last two subjects in particular required new and accurate data. Experimental Procedure Preparation of the Alloys.—The alloys were made from high-purity silver and aluminum. The silver was "Proof Silver," 99.999 per cent pure, supplied by the U. S. Metals Refining Co. The aluminum was 99.97 per cent pure (contained Si, 0.009 per cent; Fe, 0.0016 per cent; Cu, 0.004 per cent) and was supplied by the Aluminum Company of America. The lattice constants of these two materials have been reported by Jette and Foote.6 Weighed amounts of the two metals were placed in alundum crucibles and melted in vacuo in a high-frequency induction furnace. The melts were allowed to cool in the crucible, the ingots thus obtained weighed about 10 grams. These ingots were then filed clean, hamered, again cleaned and given a homogenizing anneal in vacuo of from 6 to 15 days at temperatures ranging from 500" to 695°C. The ingots were air-cooled from the annealing temperature. Lattice-constant Measurements.—Carefully prepared filings for X-ray analysis were sealed into evacuated quartz or Pyrex tubes and annealed for various periods of time at suitable temperatures. The furnaces used were vertical, rapid-quenching furnaces, the samples being quenched by crushing the sample tube under water by means of a heavy plunger. The general X-ray technique has been previously described6 The cameras were of the symmetrical, back-reflection, focussing type. Ka, radiation from a cobait-nickel alloy target was used. The wave-length values were taken from the second edition of Siegbaum's book.7 A correction for the index of refraction was applied and the lattice constants were calculated by the method of Cohen.8, 6 The lattice constants were calculated to a common temperature of 25°C., using the value of the linear expansion coefficient of pure silver as 18.9 X 10-6. WHEN the present Chairman of the Coal Division, A.I.M.E. applied for membership in the Institute 28 years ago one of his endorsers was Howard N. Eavenson, with whom he has now been associated as a partner in a Pittsburgh consulting coal - mining engineering firm for 22 years. Back of that association was some ten years of operating work in Kentucky. Mr. Alford was born in Philadelphia on Dec. 11, 1887, and was educated in Quaker schools, graduating from Swarthmore with an A.B. in 1909, later receiving a B.S. and an E.M. from the University of Pittsburgh. In the summers of 1907 and 1908 he had his first taste of coal mining as a chainman for the U. S. Coal and Coke Co. in Gary, W. Va. Upon graduating in 1909 he got a job on the by-product coke ovens of the Illinois Steel Co. at Joliet, Ill., but a year later went to Kentucky as superintendent of the Shamrock mine of the St. Bernard Mining Co., by which company he was employed for the next ten years. Successively he was assistant chief engineer, chief engineer, and assistant to the president. His duties were varied, including all the engineering duties commonly associated with coal mining, both underground and on the surface, construction of washing plants, prospecting, reports on new properties, power plants, safety work, and labor relations.

NO one questions that it is technically possible to achieve the controlled release of atomic energy in a form that can be converted into heat or electricity. However, before this is actually an accomplished fact a great amount of work must .be done. This work falls into two general classifications: research and engineering development. At present a research program is under way in this country, co-ordinated and directed by the Atomic Energy Commission, which, as time goes on, will uncover fundamental knowledge of this new science that is essential before industrial applications of atomic energy are practical. Undoubtedly therefore, as the store of available knowledge increases, a time will come when answers to the many questions relating to practicality of atomic energy in industry can be determined with reasonable certainty. That the application of atomic energy in industry will eventually be proved practical is assumed. What then are the engineering problems that must be solved before the first practical electric power generating station can be built?

LITERALLY from the four corners of the earth, from Jerusalem and China, from Mysore and Uganda, as well as from geophysicists in the United States, came contributions from workers in magnetic and electrical geo-physical methods, most of them unfortunately unable to be present themselves. The most lively discussion centered on the phenomena of natural potentials in the earth, dealt with in M. B. R. Rao's paper from Mysore, and in Parke Dickey's contribution, which he presented in person. In the oil fields, the weak potentials observed in sedimentary strata traversed by bore holes have traditionally been ascribed to phenomena of electro-filtration and electro-capillarity. Research tending to refute this theory was presented by Dickey, who reported the existence of natural potentials in core samples, and between strata exposed in underground workings. This precipitated a lively discussion as to the possible role of electro-filtration, selective adsorption of ions by mineral particles, and electrolytic potentials, in the production of this phenomenon.

D R. CHARLES W. ELIOT, the great educator and philosopher-he of the five-foot book shelf-recently gave expression to a thought I had long been cherishing as a private opinion, when he said: "It is obvious that standardization has become a dangerous adversary of progress in both education and industry." This idea must have been more widespread than either of us knew, for some five years ago a writer of verse for one of the comic papers dealt with it at great length. I will quote only a few of his stanzas to illustrate his understanding of "A Standardized Existence" : A visitor at large, I stand Beneath a standard sky- Where everything is standardized To please the standard eye. The solubility of nilrogen in liquid binary alloys of iron with Litanium. zivconium, columbium, vanndiurn, and tantalum was measured for alloy composiLions up to the solalbility limils of lhe alloy nitrides. All five alloying agents were found to decrease markedly the activity coefficient of nitrogen in liquid ivon. The metal/nitvogen mole ralios in the alloy nitrides formed were generally .found to be slighlly greater than 1.0, but in no case greater than 1.5. From the experimental data, the standard free energies of fortmation of titanium and zir-conium nitrides have been calculated for the Lemperaluve range 1550° to 1750 C. The solublily Products for columbium, tantalum, and vanadium nitrides are also reported. A number of research investigations have examined the effect of refractory metals on the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron. Although data on zirconium are not available, investigators are in agreement that titanium, vanadium, columbium, and tantalum markedly increase the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron. This fact alone makes desirable the acquisition of thermodynamic data for these elements in liquid iron. Since refractory metals are known to be stable nitride formers, they have been suggested as steel denitrifying agents, and some of their nitrides have recently been considered as containment materials for liquid iron and iron alloys. Most available thermodynamic data for these metals relate to their dilute concentrations, but effective thermodynamic treatment of these applications requires data at concentrations near the solubility limit of the alloy nitride. Although some work has been done at relatively high alloy concentrations in liquid iron (particularly for vanadium 2,3 and titanium 2,4), the results have been somewhat contradictory. Disagreement may be partly attributed to the fact that the compositions of most refractory metal nitrides have been shown to be nonstoichiometric, and to vary 2,5-8 depending on the temperature and nitrogen gas pressure with which the solid nitride phase is in equilibrium. One purpose of this study consequently has been to determine the compositions of the refractory metal nitrides precipitated from a liquid iron solution. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Rao and Parlee2 and Evans and Pehlke 9 have discussed the technique for measuring the solubility product of an alloy nitride phase in liquid iron by finding the point of departure of the nitrogen solubility from Sieverts' law. The method consists of measuring the solubility of nitrogen in a melt of iron containing a known concentration of a second metal as a function of the nitrogen gas pressure over the melt. In this study the second metal was one of the refractory metals titanium, zirconium, columbium, vanadium, or tantalum. When the nitrogen pressure at which the refractory nitride forms is reached, a deviation of the measured solubility of nitrogen in the melt from Sieverts' law is observed in the form of a "pressure halt." The concentration of nitrogen in the melt associated with this breakpoint in the nitrogen-absorption curve is then used to calculate the nitride solubility. The Sieverts method was used to measure nitrogen solubility as a function of nitrogen pressure and temperature. The experimental equipment for this technique has been previously described in detail. 1,9 Charge materials used were vacuum-melted high-purity iron (Ferrovac-E) and the best commercial grades of the refractory metals obtainable (in all cases at least 99.8+ pct pure). Recrystallized alumina crucibles were used to hold all melts except those containing zirconium, for which zirconia crucibles were necessary. Temperatures were measured by a disappearing-filament type optical pyrometer sighted vertically downward on the melt surface through a 1/4-in.-diameter sight hole in the crucible lid. By means of a technique previously described, 9 in which the refractory-metal nitride was precipitated at one temperature then redis-solved by raising the temperature 50°C and precipitated again at a higher temperature, it was possible to obtain data over a temperature range of up to 200°C on a single melt. In these days of high wages, high cost of supplies, and high taxes, operators are even more inclined to accord consideration to innovations or improvements, and many go so far as to employ men to conduct special investigations and make studies for the purpose of advancing production. One of these great leaders in the busy world of oil is Wallace Pratt, of the Humble company, who has been called to a position as director and member of the executive committee of the Standard Oil of New Jersey. Production in the Argentine in 1930 amounted to 1,415,099.7 metric tons, which converted into barrels of 42 gal., using the factor of 6.29, amounts to 8,909,773 bbl. This is a decrease of 481,613 bbl. from the 1929 production, which was 9,391,386 bbl. The production for 1930 was divided among three fields, as shown in Table 1. Hofman and Demond, particularly as we observe from their experiments that these gentlemen recognize the usefulness of the Seger cones, and that this method of determining temperatures in the furnaces of the ceramic industry and in the tests of refractory clays is valued, not only in all parts of Germany, but also in other countries. Permit us to say, with reference to the crucibles employed in tests for refractoriness, that we have used of late, besides the magnesia crucibles, also those made of Zettlitz kaolin, with the addition of alumina, previously calcined, with regard to which we beg to refer to our article in the Thonindustrie-Zeitung of December 9, 1893.

St. Joe Minerals Corp. has a long operating history of utilizing rubber-tired, trackless mining equipment in its Southeast Missouri Lead Belt underground mines. The company's first completely trackless mine, Hayden Creek, was opened in 1952, employing rubber-tired drill jumbos, electric shuttle cars, and articulated diesel trucks. The trucks were comprised of a conventional scraper tractor unit matched with a rear-dump rock wagon. These machines featured the first true earthmover tires to be used underground by St. Joe. The articulated truck concept proved to be very successful, and constitutes an increasing portion of the underground haulage today. St. Joe's second completely trackless mine, the Indian Creek property, was opened in 1954; conventional 9.1-t (10-st) rear dumps were used for haulage. Main haul roads were designed to be wide and fairly level to accommodate speeds of 32-40 km/h (20-25 mph).

It is well-known1-4 that Fe-Si alloys from approximately 9 to 27 at. pct Si show an ordered structure of the Fe3Si type at room temperature. Recently Meinhardt and Krisement,' through an investigation of Fe-Si alloys at room temperature by neutron diffraction, discovered that at 10.8 at. pct Si ordering of the FeSi type occurs while above this composition the normal Fe3Si-type superstructure appears. This FeSi type of ordering was also found by Davies8 as indicated by X-ray diffraction measurements on an Fe-8.7 at. pct Si alloy. Meinhardt and Krisement7 extended their neutron-diffraction work and determined the phase-boundary temperatures for both FeSi- and Fe3Si-type ordering. More than 400 members and guests registered for the 146th General Meeting of the Institute held in Mexico City Nov. 9 to 15, inclusive. Of these, 250 came by special train or automobile from 24 states of the Union, and the others were resident in Mexico. Mexican Government officials, headed by Manuel Santillan, Sub- secretary of the Department of National Economy, acting in. behalf of the President of the Republic, and including the Secretary of Foreign Relations and the Governor of the Federal District, were most hospitable in their official welcome and provided splendid entertainment of various kinds. A reception was tendered by Hon. Josephus Daniels at the U. S. Embassy. Among other hosts were officials of a number of large operating companies, including M. H. Kuryla, of the Real del Monte company; Jules Lacaud, of the CompaiLia Minera de Chontalpan; and Harry Wright, of the Consolidated Steel company.

MOST people believe that rare metals are always, scarce in nature, expensive to make, and therefore useless despite some miraculous properties which might make them a cure-all. There are' some metals, which are quite frequent in nature, such as zirconium, which are called rare only because our present methods for making them are elaborate, thus forcing the manufacturer to sell them at a high price. There are also truly rare metals, such as gallium, which do not occur frequently in ores, but are easily reducible from their oxides. In these cases the price of the concentration operation is the decisive factor. The distribution of the elements in the earth's crust is no indication as to the availability of a metal; the concentration operation is the critical factor. Concentration is frequently obtained in the course of metallurgical operations for the extraction of other metals, and the rare metal may be enriched in by-products, flue dusts, mother liquors or precipitates from electrolyte purification as are indium, thallium, selenium, and tellurium. A periodic table of the rare elements may serve as a basis for discussion of their properties and to establish a program. (Table 1.)

I. DESCRIPTION OF THE CLINTON ORES AND ASSOCIATED POCKS. THE Clinton rocks in Stone Valley comprise (1) thick layers of deep-red shale, (2) layers of reddish-gray shale interspersed with beds of sandstone and thin beds of extremely fossiliferous limestone, and (3) yellowish-gray shales alternating with thin layers of olive-colored shales. These layers of shale are all very thin and are at no point massive.1 A bed of gray-white sandstone varying in thickness from 12 to 30 ft. occurs in the tipper portions of the Clinton shales. This is called the ore sandstone, a name given to it by Rogers and adopted also by the Second Pennsylvania Geological Survey. It is the surest guide to the presence of the iron-ore bed, which lies below its lower edges at distances varying from 10 to 20 ft. This ore sandstone, in the valley, lies generally at very low inclinations, but often is locally subjected to considerable changes in dip. At its outcrop this ore sandstone weathers very easily and yields a rather sparse crop of stone, Composed of dirty, iron-stained boulders. Upon the roads these boulders are quite well rounded, and bear fragments of crinoid stems and other fossil forms. The ore sandstone exhibits at many points evidences of former movements in this very great thickness of the shales, and as it is the only stratum in this series competent to transmit and record stresses due to structural movements, its evidence is of considerable importance in determining the occurrence of movements in times past.

With a mine output as high as 5000 tpd and mill capacity of 7000 tpd, the uranium mining and milling complex owned and operated by Kerr-McGee Nuclear Corp. in the Ambrosia Lake area is the largest in the U.S. and is likely to remain so for some time. Next year, Kerr- McGee expects to have in production another mine in Section 19 of the Ambrosia area-and will begin ore production in 1976 at its new $15-million mine at Church Rock, located northeast of Gallup, N. M., where the company has already completed the shaft work and is in the early stages of project development. Ore from Church Rock will be transported to the company's facilities at Ambrosia Lake for processing. Kerr-McGee's existing eight mines in Ambrosia Lake go to depths of about 800 to 1500 ft to tap the various horizons of uranium-bearing sands in the Westwater Canyon of the Morrison formation.

In 1938, Kanter' revealed that the steady-state creep rate of low-carbon iron alloys could be correlated by an activation energy expression, where the activation energy for creep, Qc, was found equal to about 90.0 kcal per mole for most of the alloys investigated. He suggested that creep at high temperatures might be controlled by some sort of solid self-diffusion process since the value of Qc was about equal to the known value for self-diffusion, Qd. Correlations were not further attempted along these lines until many years later, when new evidence2-8 was presented suggesting that Qc = Qd for many metals. This equality now appears to be established for ten metals (Al, Pb, Ni, Mg, Cd, In, a Fe, y Fe, Cu, and Au). This experimental fact prompted several investigators to postulate various mechanisms of dislocation motion which would yield an activation energy for creep equal to that for self-diffusion.7-9 Possibly the most accepted theory is that based on dislocation climb7 where a dislocation is envisioned to surmount a barrier by an atom-vacancy exchange process, thereby "climbing" from one slip plane to another. Such a model would suggest that the steady-state creep rate, i, should be directly proportional to the rate of self-diffusion, D, for a given creep stress. In order to more clearly reveal the relationship between creep and diffusion, and to eventually determine the correct model, it would be desirable to obtain data showing correlations between i and D, rather than with a comparison of the temperature coefficients, Q. It has been known for some time that the self-diffusivity of iron atoms is greatly decreased when body-centered-cubic (a) iron transforms to face-centered-cubic (y) iron. This has been ascribed to the more close-packed structure of y iron. The diffusivity ratio at the transition temperature is Da/Dy =350. Correlations of creep data for a and y iron5 reveal that the creep rates under a given stress at the transition temperature differ by about the same ratio (ea/ey 2 200). It would be difficult to reconcile these results on any other basis than that the diffusivity of atoms probably controls creep of iron in some very direct way. No other published data on other allotropic metals appear currently available for further checking such a possible correlation between i and D. Thallium transforms from a hexagonal close-packed (a) structure to a body-centered-cubic (ß) structure at 230°C (503°K) and the self-diffusivities of the two structures have been determined by shirn.10 His results are plotted in Fig. 1 where it will be noted that Dß/Da = 25 at the transition temperature. It would appear desirable, therefore, to determine the creep rates of polycrystalline a and ß thallium at the transition temperature, as well as determine

A TOTAL eclipse of the sun is a brief, exciting spectacle witnessed by most men but once or twice during a lifetime. But to an astronomer an eclipse of the sun is an event of utmost scientific importance. For then, certain phenomena of the sun normally obscured by the brilliant glare of sunlight become spectacularly visible. For over seventy years prior to 1930 astronomers vainly attempted to discover a means of observing all of these eclipse features of the sun without a natural eclipse. But in 1930, through the genius of the French scientist, Bernard Lyot, astronomers met final success. Dr. Lyot invented a new kind of telescope known as a coronagraph, which made possible photography of all of the eclipse features of the sun. In 1940 Harvard University completed final testing of its Lyot-type coronagraph. the only one in the Western Hemisphere, and shipped it to Climax, where Donald H. Menzel, of Harvard College Observatory, supervised its establishment on the southeastern edge of the mining community of the Climax Molybdenum Co., with whose help and advice the modern residence and telescope dome of the observatory were constructed. Ever since that summer the station has been operated by me, first as a graduate student, and now as a staff member of Harvard College Observatory.

A NOVEL practice in the bituminous coal industry is the accelerated method of burning coal to ash used in the laboratory of the Fidelity washery of the United Electric Coal Companies, Du Quoin, Ill. Development of this method has supplanted the tedious float-and-sink process for plant control at this plant. In normal operation the plant operators have available within thirty minutes the accurate ash percentage of the coal loaded in the railroad cars and can therefore make adjustments to maintain a practically uniform quality of washed coal, regardless of the variations in washery feed.
