The Transactions of the Institute contain nothing, as yet, on the subject of pocket-compasses; and in the belief that American miners, explorers, geologists, and engineers will gladly welcome any infor mation about new forms of apparatus, simple in construction and adapted to rapid use, I offer a short description of an improved French combination pocket-compass, which, if once introduced into use, would seem likely to supersede similar instrumens of older pattern. The instrument in my possession I owe to the kindness of M. G. de.La Bouglise, of Paris. The frame of the compass is a double-bottomed box, 2 1/2 inches square and 9/16 of an inch high, made of white metal, and with its sur faces very carefully planed. The sides of the box make true right angles with each other. Two sides are parallel with, and two are normal to, the north and south line of the principal graduation. The bottom is accurately planed, so that the instrument will lie true on a plane surface. A glass, 2 3/8 inches in diameter, is set in the top plate. The graduation for the needle is engraved on the upper face of a ring, connected with the flat disk, in which the center-pin is in serted. Between this disk and the bottom of the box there is a hollow space a quarter of an inch deep. The needle is 1 7/8 inches in length, and can be balanced by means of a small sliding piece of metal. The graduation extends from 0° to 360°, reading from right to left. The stopping of the needle is effected by a screw, A, on the side of the box near the handle, H (Fig. 1). There is also a clinometer attachment, the graduation for which is engraved on the upper face of the silver-plated disk. The compass has two sights. The north sight, B, is a simple pin, a little more than an inch high, which, when not in use, is kept folded down, and is partially protected by the exterior sliding-plate, C. ZINC smelters in the central western. States have established a very high standard of purity for blende-concentrates, viz., zinc 60, iron less than 3, and lead less than 1 per cent. The very low percentage of iron is made possible by the blende containing less than 0.5 percent of isomorphous iron sulphide and by the sparing occurrence of pyritic material in the large blende-deposits of southwestern Missouri and southeastern Kansas. The blende in these districts occurs in sub-Carboniferous limestone, and is associated with chert, residual clay, calcite, pyrite or rnarcasite and bitumen. The different minerals are coarse and therefore readily separated by mechanical washing from the blende, with the exception of pyrite and marcasite, as blende has a specific gravity of from 3.9 to 4.1, marcasite, from 4.85 to 4.90, and pyrite, from 4.95 to 5.10. The common procedure of dressing the ores is to crush in a breaker, size in a trommel with 0.5-in. holes, pass the over-size through roughing-rolls and then jig the ore, now reduced to 0.5 in. maximum size, in roughing multiple-sieve jigs. The products of these are waste-tailings, sine-discharge coarse concentrates, side-discharge coarse middlings and bottom-discharge fine middlings. The coarse concentrates are sent to the market. The coarse middlings are crushed in middlings-rolls and brought back into the system by feeding into the main trommel. The fine middlings are cleaned upon finishing-jigs. READERS of this journal are familiar with the danger of coal-dust explosions in mines and with recommended means for preventing them. The subject was treated in a paper by R. R. Sayers in the January 1943 issue, as well as in several previous articles. Similarly the danger of dust explosions is generally recognized in the handling of grain dust, flour, starch, sugar, and other carbonaceous products. However, until recently, few people realized that an analogous, real explosion hazard exists wherever dust suspensions of certain finely divided metal powders are formed. This lack of knowledge was in part due to the fact that until a few years ago only a small number of metal powders, such as aluminum, magnesium, zinc, iron, and tungsten, were produced, in comparatively small volume, and partly because information on the explosibility of metal powders was lacking.

Over the past ten years, analysis of the acceptability of face ventilation systems has been based on numerical criteria rather than solely a study of air flow and methane patterns in the face area. This type of analysis has become possible primarily because of the instrumentation and mathematical models developed by the Ventilation Division, Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). To properly use these mathematical models, large amounts of methane and airflow data must be collected in the face area during mining activities. To supplement underground testing of face ventilation systems, a full scale model of a face area was built. This model includes a full scale model continuous miner, a face ventilation system, a gas release system, and a remote methane detection system. The remote methane detection system consists of an array of twelve methane sensors located throughout the face area. Data from the sensors are transmitted to strip chart recorders. Methane, air quantity, and other data collected during a test are entered into a computer for analysis. This paper presents the data entry system, the models used for data analysis, the test results, and the application of these results to a face ventilation system.

Measurements of the heat effects on addition of various solid phases of InSb to a solution calorimeter have confirmed the existence of a new high-pressure plzase InSbQII), which was jormed at 37 kbar and 623°K. The heats of formation of InSbQ), InSbfl), and InSb(111) have been measured and the heats of transjormation of InSb(1) to InSb(1l) and InSb(Iii) and of 'InSb(ll) to InSb(iiI) at atmospheric pressure and 78°K have been determined independently. Other thermodynamic properties of these phases, the phase boundary InSb(i)/InSb(ll), and the relative positions of the triple points are calculated. The pressure-Dolume term is shown to be more critical than the internal energy difference in making the phase InSbQ) less stable than InSb(II) at high pressures. Observations on partially transformed specimens suggest that the transformation of' metastable InSb (III) takes place in the two steps InSb(lll) — InSbQI) and InSbQI) — InSb(l). The compound InSb can exist as several phases depending on the temperature and pressure. The phase InSb(I), which is a semiconductor having the zinc-blende structure, transforms into the phase InSb(11) at a pressure of about 23 kbar and room temperature.'-3 The phase InSb(II) has the 6 tin structure,4-6 is metallic, and becomes a superconductor below 2.lok7 An orthorhombic phase of InSb has been reported to occur above a pressure of approximately 30 kbar at room temperature.' This phase is also a superconductor below about 3.4k9 The phase InSb(I1) is retained at atmospheric pressure if it is quenched to 78°K under pressure,6,7 but tends to transform at higher temperatures and does so explosively above approximately 210ok,7 A value of the heat of transformation of InSb(1) to InSb(II) at 210°K and atmospheric pressure has been reported.' A concurrent publication'0 reports evidence for a new solid phase InSb(III), which was formed by annealing InSb above 58 1°K at 37 kbar, above 560°K at 52 kbar, and above 473°K at 65 kbar. Specimens of InSb(II1) had a superconducting transition temperature of 4.lo ± 0.1oK. X-ray diffraction patterns also indicated the presence of a new phase. In this communication, thermodynamic properties of the phases InSb(I), InSb(II), and InSb(II1) are reported and discussed. The phase boundary InSb(I)/InSb(II) and the relative positions of the triple points are calculated. 1) EXPERIMENTAL 1.1) Preparation of Specimens. Specimens of the high-pressure phases of InSb were prepared in a belt-type high-pressure chamber by a tichnique described in detail elsewhere.'' Charges of 0.6 to 0.8 g of Cominco semiconductor grade InSb were used. The temperatures were measured with a chromel-alumel thermocouple, the hot junction of which was within 0.5 mm of the specimen. The specimens were heated under a pressure of 37 kbar for 1 hr at 723°K (which is well above the liquidus) and quenched to room temperature. One set was annealed at 523°K and another set at 623°K for 20 to 24 hr. These annealing temperatures were chosen because 523°K was below and 623°K was above the temperature of the transformation of InSb(II) to InSb(1Tl) at 37 kbar.10 The specimens were then cooled to 125°K by passing liquid nitrogen through the jacket of the belt die before the

Getting optimal performance from flotation cells can, in many cases, be critical to a project's economic viability. Simple testing procedures can sound early warning signals as well as maintain optimum recoveries from the flotation cycle. The materials required for a simple testing laboratory include: (1) pH meter or pH paper, (2) bottles of reagents used in plant flotation, (3) stop watch, (4) calibrated eye droppers. (5) laboratory flotation machine (1000-g tank, open impeller), (6) froth collection pans, (7) magnifying glass, (8) sizing screen sufficient to retain 10% of the flotation feed coarse fraction, (9) sizing screen for the size particles at which desliming of the plant flotation feed is to take place, and (10) a set of screens covering the complete range of feed particle size.

THE object of this paper is to present a theory of the formation of fissures which seems to be supported by all available data. The investigation is, in the main, an exact one, and irregularities of the rock-structure are generalized. From the conclusions drawn a general classification of fissures is made, and this should be of practical use in the comparison of mineral deposits. The theory also throws some light on the equilibrium of the earth's crust and the depth of action of surface-waters. Incidentally, additions are made to the theory of earthquake-slips. Former Theory. It has been previously pointed out that the '"jointing" of homogeneous rocks occurs in two sets of planes, at right angles to one another, and making angles of 45° with the directions of greatest and least principal stress.' The theory by which this fact is explained does not, however, account for fissures and faults, because normal faults are usually more vertically, and reverse faults more horizontally, inclined than 45°. The "jointing law" is based on the following axiom: "In a homogeneous mass under pressure, rupture must take place on the lines of maximum tangential stress." 2 This law applies, with fair approximation, to the tests on jointing which can be made in the laboratory, and as nearly as can be expected to the natural jointing-planes in rock-masses, where the stresses are not very great; but it entirely fails to account for fissure-fractures.

The writer has been interested in determining the mineralogic dis-t,ribut.ion of silver in the base-metal ore of thc Ground Hog mine of the Asarco Mining Co. in the Central mining district of New Mexico.' This ore consists of a varitextured mixture of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena and pyrite in a quartz gangue. The average ore contains 14 per cent of zinc, 9.5 per cent of lead, 5 per cent of copper, and 10 oz. of silver per ton. Generally it is accepted that the silver in ores of this type, in which no definite silver minerals can be recognized, is contained in the base-metal minerals. Published assays of pure mineral specimens from many districts show that each of the base-metal minerals contributes in some degree to the total silver content of the ores, and to determine the proportionate amount contributed by each mineral in any specific ore it has been the practice to assay selected specimens of each mineral, the purity of which has been determined microscopically. There being no such assays available for the Ground Hog ore, and it being impracticable to have enough of them made to give average results, the writer resorted to a mathematical attack upon composite assays of large quantities of ore and concentrates. Surprising results were obtained, and it is the threefold purpose of this paper to present these results, to describe the mathematical method used, and to point out the value of using this method even when assays of pure specimens are available. Value of the Mathematical Method The obvious way of attacking the problem would be to separate cleanly large quantities of ore into its component minerals and then to determine the average silver content of each mineral by assay of representative samples. Since an absolutely clean separation is not feasible, it has been the practice, as mentioned above, to assay pure specimens of the different minerals. No one will contend seriously that the silver content of a base-metal mineral is constant throughout any particular deposit, and it will

To date. utility company underground storage of gas has generally been restricted to depleted dry gas fields. The Playa del Rey project is probably the first to successfully store gas in a partially depleted oil reservoir with the recovery of large volumes of pas at high rates as the main objective. Oil recovery has been a secondary consideration. Problems encountered unusual to those of storage in a dry gas zone were: (1) the removal and retardation of formation of emulsion. (2) the upstructure movement of fluid during withdrawal periods which formed fluid blocks, and (3) reservoir shrinkage resulting from encroachment of edgewater. The solution of these problems as outlined in the paper has resulted in increasing the withdrawal rate from the original design capacity of 4,000 Mcf per hour to the current 10.000 Mcf per hour. Additional increase is anticipated as the operations continue. Migration. reservoir performance. operational procedure and a historical record are included to make this a resume of the project from its war-time inception in 1942 to the first of 1952. INTRODUCTION The Playa del Rey underground gas storage project is probably the first project in which gas has been stored in a partially depleted oil reservoir, with the recovery of large volumes of gas at high rates as the main objective and the recovery of oil a secondary consideration. Problems unusual to those of storage in dry gas zones have made this a pioneer endeavor. The total storage capacity of approximately 1,500,000 Mcf of this reservoir is small in comparison with other underground gas storage projects. However. by study and experiment the deliverability into transmission lines. operating at pressures in excess of 150 lbs., has been nearly tripled in the past three years. to the current 10.000 Mcf per hour late, without the use of compression. It is anticipated this rate will gradually increase as additional fluid is removed from the formation. LOCATION AND HISTORY Playa del Key is located on Santa Monica Bay about two miles south of the beach commuity of Venice and 15 miles southwest of the renter of the City city Los Angeles. Fig. 1. The discovery well was completed at 6,194 ft in 1929. An upper zone at 3,905 ft was found on June 18. 1930. Townlot development was very rapid and by the end of 1930 there were 141 producing wells in the field. The Union Oil Co. completed a lower zone well south of the Townlot Field in May, 1931, which was believed to be an extension, until additional drilling of about 50 wells during 1934 and 1935 indicated this area to be a separate accumulation as shown on Fig. 2. The lower oil horizon, which is now the storage zone, had no original gas cap and is believed to be a continental detrital deposit of conglomerate that accumulated in valleys and depressions of a weathered schist high. which later subsided and was overlain by an impervious nodular shale. This type of formation has rapid variation of porosity. permeability and thickness due to lack of sorting action common to marine deposition. and the uneven surface of the original schist high. Production was limited on the upstructure sides by the pinching out of the conglomerate, and downstructure by edgewater. Unrestricted production, together with high permeabilities, led to large wastage of gas from this new area as facilities were not available for transport of gas to market. The decline was very rapid and by 1942 the portion of the new area south of Ballona Creek was nearly depleted. FOUR portraits have recently been hung in the rooms of the Institute, in recognition of four illustrious men with whom we, as mining engineers and metallurgists, may claim fellowship. LUTHER. Martin Luther is often spoken of as a miner's son; but it is less generally known that John Luther, his father, was, in a small way, a metallurgist as well as a miner, and that Martin Luther himself, in his youth, worked in a forge or bloomary established by his father at Mansfeld, Saxony. Since this is the only manual occupation on his part of which we have any record, it is fair to assume that the great scholar and reformer derived from his work in this department the practical familiarity with the conditions of human labor so abundantly evinced in the homely illustrations which accompany even his serious arguments, and in the witty apothegms of his famous "table-talk." At the same time, I must confess that 1 have not been able to find in any of the works of Luther distinct allusions to mining or metallurgy. KÖRNER. Theodor Körner, a student at the Mining Academy of Freiberg, Saxony, threw himself into the German War of Freedom in the first decade of the 19th Century. He was a poet of no mean rank ; and his " Song of the Sword " is one of the great lyrics of literature. This poem was written but a few days before he died in battle. In many respects, Körner may be compared with our American hero Theodore Winthrop, who similarly met a glorious fate, and left behind him prophetic indications of genius, of which his premature death prevented the complete fulfillment. I am informed by a member of the Institute that Körner's admirable collection of minerals is still preserved at Dresden.

IF all of the 14 million tons of kaolin produced in Georgia through 1949 had been mined from a single deposit 20 ft thick, it would represent a mined-out area of less than 1 sq mile. This measure of depletion is in such strong contrast with the large size of the area shown in Fig. 1, from which most of the output has come, that there has developed an optimistic outlook concerning future supplies of kaolin equal in grade to that already mined. Dozens of mines are widely but not evenly distributed within this area, which consists mostly of parts of Twiggs, Wilkinson, and Washington counties. There are scarcely half a dozen kaolin mines elsewhere in the state that have been appreciably productive, although the areas in which they occur may have good possibilities. Most of the efforts to find new deposits, therefore, will be confined to the area shown in Fig. 1, for it is here that the industry has established its facilities, and prospecting is encouraged by relatively numerous outcrops and opened deposits of kaolin.

NAPOLEON'S dictum that an Army travels on its stomach has not changed in this present war, but the things an Army's stomach calls for would be more than strange to Napoleon. Today one of the main articles of diet for the mechanized army is oil and gasoline, and the chief and most efficient source of 'apply overland is the pipe line. It was a flexible 4-in. pipe line that supplied the voracious appetite of tanks, trucks, jeeps, and planes across the North African desert. and it is the 1800-mile pipe line from Calcutta to Kunming, Yunnan Province in China, the longest in the world, that supplied oil and 100-octane gas for the trucks, tanks, Jeeps, and planes fighting on the Assam-Burma-China front in recent months. The Howe Coal Co. is mining the Oklahoma Lower Hartshorne bed which ranges in seam thickness from 38 to 42 in. and pitches approximately 7° to the northeast. The raw feed to the cleaning plant averages about 20% ash and 1.10% sulfur, being reduced in the cleaning process to 4.8% ash and 0.9% sulfur with a free swelling index of 8 or 8%. This coal rivals the Pocohantas seam in chemistry and coking characteristics but has better fluidity than the Pocohantas seam coal. The coal is presently being prepared for the Japanese steel market in an 85-tph pilot plant designed and constructed by Roberts & Schaefer. The cleaning-plant flowsheet is discussed in detail.

The St. Helens mining-district, indicated in sketch-map, Fig. 1, is chiefly in Townships 9 and 10 North, Ranges 5 and 6 East of the Willamette meridian, in Skamania county, Wash. There is no railroad or even a wagon-road at present connecting it with any base of supplies; access is usually by wagon-road for about 50 miles from the town of Castle Rock to Spirit lake, and from that point by pony-trail from 6 to 10 miles farther. STANDARD raises at Homestake are 150 ft long. Raises of more than 150 ft, driven with the use of a cage and hoist, are considered long raises- some have been driven more than 900 ft. Long raises have eliminated the need for access drifts on each level when transfer and ventilation raises are driven. These timbered cage raises, 7x9 ft in cross section, include a rock compartment and a combination cage, pipe, and manway compartment. To prevent excessive weight on the timbers, 10x10-in. bearing beams are cemented into hitches cut in the rock at 150-ft intervals. The beams also hold back timber movement caused by daily drawing of rock through the rock compartment.
