There are some simple theoretical approaches to pillar design but they leave much to be desired. There are also more complex theoretical approaches, but at this time the most realistic approach is to go into the mines and observe and measure how real pillars are performing under real conditions; to allow the information thus gathered to ferment in our minds - then to project the behaviour of those pillars into our new designs and mining techniques, probably with no formulas at all. Examples, from half-a-dozen different mines, show how a simple- minded approach, through observation and measurement, led to changes in pillar design which often contradicted the textbook but made very significant contributions to mining safety, efficiency and costs. The good news is that we know a lot more about pillar design than we realize. We have, between us, looked at millions of pillars of all kinds, under all conditions, but we have overlooked what they are trying to tell us. We can take problem situations and turn them into opportunities and, in that way, become better stewards of the resources which have been given to us.

AT the Tulsa meeting of the A. P. I., the following reso-lutions, expressive of the policy of that organization, were among those adopted: RESOLVED, That we endorse the conclusion of the Federal Oil Conservation Board in its report of September, 1926, that the prevention of the waste of gas incident to the pro-duction of oil is of paramount importance in the conserva-tion and economical production of oil, and the president of the Institute is requested to appoint a committee of seven to devise and suggest to this board, or the executive com-mittee, such measures as will enable the industry, while continuing to meet the consumption requirements for pe-troleum and its products, to conserve in its natural state such reserves of petroleum as may not then be required for consumption. RESOLVED, That the president of the Institute appoint a committee of seven to formulate and recommend to this board or its executive committee, at the earliest practicable date, a program of legislation; Federal and State, to be advocated by the Institute giving sanction and effect to agreements by oil producers for the curtailment of produc-tion in pools where and during periods when there is over-production, having for their purpose the economical and orderly production of oil.

Whether we have occasion to think of it or not, an adequate and economic supply of energy fuels is vital to each of us. It is interesting to look ahead at the way in which fuels from supplementary sources will begin to enter into the energy mix to help meet the long-term national energy needs. From 1947 to 1965, the average annual rate of growth of energy consumption was 2.7%, with total energy demand in 1965 being equivalent to 54 quadrillion Btu's. During this short period of 18 years, the cumulative output of coal in the U.S. was 9.6 billion tons; natural gas, 193.5 trillion cu ft; and crude oil, 45.9 billion bbl. During the next decade and a half the nation's energy requirements are expected to grow at an average rate of 3.3% yearly, with consumption of energy expected to reach an annual rate of about 88 quadrillion Btu's by 1980, or 63% over the 1965 level.

THE problem of the proper size and capacity of the open-hearth furnace has been a predominant issue ever since its inception some sixty years ago. The original furnaces, built in 1868 at Landore, England, were only to 3 to 4 tons capacity, and from' this there has been a steadily increasing and almost uniform rate of expansion until furnaces producing 300 tons are in successful operation today. At the end of the first half of this 60-year period, or about the year 1900, 50-ton furnaces we're common. Up to this time the problems of expansion had been largely those relating to suficient capital and the engineering development of larger units. But as 75, 100-ton and larger furnaces were proposed apprehension grew and other questions assumed leading consideration.

NORWAY'S metallurgical development, which has extended over many centuries, is intimately associated with that country's unique topography and climatic conditions. It is a rugged mountainous country, with a most irregular shore line, bordered by thousands of islands forming a natural protection for shipping. There are an endless number of lakes, and innumerable rivers and waterfalls, many fed by glaciers and melting snow. Rainfall is abundant. Though half of the country is north of the Arctic Circle, it is warmed by the Gulf Stream, so that the average temperature is about 45°, or 20° higher than other parts of the world in the same latitude. THE interdependence of nations in regard to mineral supplies has grown apace with the expanded needs of industry, with depletion of reserves, and with advances in technology. This increased mutual dependence raises many questions of foreign economic policy of special importance in our postwar planning. Realization of the urgent need for the development of a general mineral policy broadly based on national requirements led to discussions of the problem between officials of the Department of State and myself, as a result of which it was suggested that I make an informal and unofficial canvass of the views of mineral specialists of the country on foreign mineral policy.

STUDIES of the transformation of austenite at constant subcritical temperatures have been numerous since the work of Davenport and Bain.1 Considerable information has been obtained on low-alloy steels and on high-carbon alloys containing undissolved carbide or graphite at the austenitizing temperature. Little is known of the isothermal transformation of austenite containing in solution large amounts of both carbon and a single alloying element. In this investigation four steels containing one per cent carbon and with chromium in the range 3 to 9 per cent have been examined with the view to establishing the fundamental character of the isothermal reactions when all carbon and chromium are initially in solution in austenite. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys The chemical compositions of the steels investigated are given in Table I. The 4 per cent Cr alloy is a commercial steel. The other steels were made by the Carpenter Steel Co. as 50-lb., induction-furnace heats and rolled to 5/8-in. round bars. Bars were softened at 650° to 700°C. before the specimens were cut. [ ] Metallographic Method Most of the lines on the transformation diagrams presented here have been placed on the basis of the microscopic examination of partially reacted specimens. Thees specimens were approximately ½ by ¼ by 1/8 in. in size. Specimens of the 9 per cent Cr steel were held 10 to 12 hr. at 1200° to I225°C. before quenching to the various subcritical temperatures. The other steels were held for 2 to 2 ½ hr. at 1200°C. before quenching. These treatments, carried out in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen, produced an austenite grain size larger than A.S.T.M. No. I, some grains being 1 to 2 mm. in diameter. There were a few undissolved carbide particles in some specimens of the 9 per cent Cr steel. It is believed, however, that any errors in the results due to incomplete solution of carbon and chromium in austenite are negligible; that is, austenite compositions may be considered as being those listed in Table I. It is scarcely necessary to point out the important functions of water in the mining operations of man, especially in the State of California, where sluicing and hydraulic mining have been practiced on such a grand scale as to arouse the opposition of the agricultural interests. But the role which water and ice have played in mining or excavating on their own account is not so apparent. The alluvions of existing rivers, and the higher gravel-beds left by ancient streams, are doubtless the result of running water; but how far these gravelly materials owe their origin primarily as rocky debris and fragments of veins to glacial erosion, it is difficult .to determine. Yet we see on every side in our higher mountains unmistakable evidences of the cutting, crushing and eroding effects of glacial ice. We note that mountain-summits have been reduced in height and shaped into rounded and dome-like summits. We know that the general contour of the hills of New England, of the Highlands of the Hudson, and of the mountains of northern New Jersey, is due to glacial carving. The same is true of the Laurentian hills of Canada and of the mountains of all northern regions. And we recognize in the vast deposits of so-called " drift," which are spread out over the surface of the northern States, the chips and debris from the glacial workshops. Thus we cannot avoid the conclusion that there was an enormous amount of cutting and excavating in glacial times, and that vast quantities of veinmaterial and of ores and metals must have been liberated by ice-action.

ALTHOUGH the Andean mountain belt, which contains almost all the metal deposits of the other South American nations, does not enter Brazil, this country is rich in mineral resources, for in area it accounts for half the continent and geologically it contains almost all of the Brazilian Shield. This great mass of ancient rocks has been relatively stable for a long time and forms a great area of plateaus and highlands interrupted only by the syncline which carries the Amazon River across it to the sea. Lowland Brazil - the great flood plains of the Amazon. Tocantins, Paraguay, and Parana Rivers-is of no interest to the miner, and in fact supports but a small proportion of the country's population. The highland area is divided into unequal parts by the Amazon River; the north half is underlain by the north lobe of the Brazilian Shield which extends into Venezuela as far as the Orinoco, and into the Guianas, and is known as the Guiana Highlands. Mineralization appears to have been weak in the Brazilian portion of these hills. In fact most of the ore deposits are to be found in the States of Minas Gerais and Bahia, although the neighboring states of Sao Paulo, Pernambuco, and Piauhy can also boast of some deposits. Goias and Matto Grosso are as yet incompletely prospected but are considered to contain reserves for the future.

COAL research during 1942 was directed in an important degree toward the solution of problems of wartime importance. A wider selection of coals for carbonization to meet the increased demand for coke, and the improved utilization of lower-grade coals for boiler fuel were made possible by fundamental studies on cod and ash behavior that had been started several years ago. The coal industry's interest in the work of the various laboratories brightened significantly as results were demonstrated on smokeless combustion in stoves, on stokers without coke trees, and on pulverized firing of forge furnaces. In Au-Ag alloys the critical resolved shear stress Tc. at room temperature is essentially a parabolic function of atomic concentration:' the 50 at. pct Ag-50 at. pct Au alloy is about 10 times stronger than the pure metals. This strengthening occurs in spite of the similarity in valence and atomic size. Solid-solution strengthening in fcc metals is characteristically greater at low temperatures than at room temperature. In Ag-10 at. pct Au and Au-10 at. pet Ag; r, (20.4K)/Tc (300°K) is 2.3 and 2.5. respectively.- compared to 1.2 in pure silver.3 Suzuki' and Flinn5 explained the alloy strengthening at room temperature as a combination of Suzuki locking and short-range order hardening. The agreement between the computed and measured strengthening was very good: however, in Ag base-A1 alloys Hendrickson and Fine6 concluded that Suzuki locking resulted mainly in a yield drop effect. Recent reviews of the solid-solution strengthening in fcc metals by Fleischer2 and Haasen8, 9attributed the strengthening at room tenl-perature to the combined effect of atom nlisfit and change in shear modulus 011 the long-range stress field surrounding a dislocation. The parameter used by Fleischer was The shear tnoduli of Ag-0 to 6 at. pct Au alloys were measured by Pur-wins. Labusch. and Haasen.In While addition of 4 at. pct Au caused an appreciable increase in the C,, elastic constant. there was a decrease on increasing the solute to 6 at. pct Au: C,, and C :: were not measured in the 6 at. pct alloy. The greater solution hardening at low temperatures implies the presence of short-range interactions between the solute atoms and dislocations These include size and electronegativity effects. Whether the extra alloy strengthening at low temperatures is due to locking or friction hardening is still a controversy."".' In the present research the stress-strain behavior of Au-Ag single crystals containing 1 to 5 at. pct Ag and 1 to 5 at. pct Au was measured vs strain rate and temperature down to 4.2' K. Particular attention was paid to yield drop effects. These have not been previously reported. PROCEDURES The alloys were supplied by the Engelhard Industries. Inc.. as strips 0.050 by 0.250 by 12 in. The compositions are given in Table I. Single crystals were grown under static vacuum using a traveling molten zone technique. An 8,000-ft experimental field well was utilized to conduct flowing pressure gradient tests under conditions of continuous, multiphase flow through 2 3/8-in. OD tubing. The well was equipped with 10 gas-lift valves and 10 Maihak electronic pressure recorders, as well as instruments to accurately measure the surface pressure, temperature, volume of injected gas and fluid production. These tests were conducted for flow rates ranging from 75 to 936 B/D at various gas-liquid ratios from 105 to 9,433 scf/bbl. An expanding-orifice gas-lift valve allowed each flow rate to be produced with a range of controlled gas-liquid ratios. From these data an accurate pressure traverse has been constructed for various flow rates and for various gas-liquid ratios. A comparison of these tests to Poettmann and Carpenter's correlation indicates that deviations occur for certain ranges of flow rates and gas-liquid ratios. Numerous curves are presented illustrating the comparison of this correlation with the field data. Poettmann and Carpenter's correlation deviates some for low flow rates and, in particular, for gas-liquid ratios in excess of 3,000 scf/bbl. These deviations me believed to be mainly due to the friction-factor correlation. However, Poettmann and Carpenter's correlation gives excellent agreement in those ranges of higher density. This was as expected and predicted by Poettmann. He pointed out that their method was not intended to be extended to those ranges of low densities whereby an extreme reversal in curvature occurs.l As a result of these experimental tests, correlations using Poettmann and Carpenter's method were established between the friction factors and mass flow rates which are applicable for all gas-liquid ratios and flow rates. Definite changing flow patterns do not allow any one correlation to be accurate for all ranges of flow. INTRODUCTION The ability to analytically predict the pressure at any point in a flow string is essential in determining optimum production string dimensions and in the design of gas-lift installations. This information is also invaluable in predicting bottom-hole pressures in flowing wells. Although this problem is not new to industry, it has by no means been solved completely for all types of flow conditions. Versluys,2 Uren, et al, 3 Gosline,4 May,5 and Moore, et al,6,7 were all early investigators of multiphase flow through vertical conduits. However, all of these investigations and proposed methods were very limited as to their range of application. Likewise, many are extremely complicated and therefore not very useful in the field. Only in the last decade have any significant methods been proposed which are generally applicable. The most widely accepted procedure in industry at the present time is a semi-empirical method developed from an energy balance, proposed by Poettmann and Carpenter8 in 1952. Their correlation is based on actual pressure measurements from field wells. Accurate predictions from this correlation are limited to high flow rates and low gas-liquid ratios. Although this method will be discussed in detail later, it should be pointed out that two important parameters, namely the gas-liquid ratio and the viscosity, were omitted in their correlation. The viscosity was justifiably omitted since their data was in the highly turbulent flow region for both phases, and most wells fall in this category. The gas-liquid ratio was incorporated to some extent in the gas-density term. In 1954, Gilbert9 presented numerous pressure gradient curves obtained from field data for various flow rates and gas-liquid ratios for the determination of optimum flow strings. However, no method is presented for predicting pressure gradients except by comparison to these curves. Baxendell, et al,10 proposed a method based on Poettmann and Carpenter's procedure

Evidence is produced below to show that the carbide "Mn,C," reported by Kw,and ersson' is really a mixture of two carbides. One is an Fe-Mn carbide which is probably isomorphous with hexagonal Mn15C4, reported by Bouchand and Pruchart.' The othev is a tetragonul Fe-Mn carbide with cell dzmensions close to those reported previously by the author3 for an Fe0.1Mno. carbide. IN a recent investigation several Fe-Mn carbide specimens, each weighing about 5 g, were prepared in a manner previously reported.3 Debye-Scherrer X-ray photographs were taken of at least two samples from different parts of each specimen using a 114.6-mm-diam camera. The exposure time was 2 hr using filtered chromium radiation, a tube voltage of 35 kv and a tube current of 10 ma. In the case of one specimen, which contained nominal weight percentages of iron, manganese, and carbon of 9.40, 84. 6,, and 6.0, respectively, duplicate chemical analyses indicated f1.2 and 5.5 wt pct C to be present in the two samples taken of the specimen: no graphitic carbon was detected. One powder-diffraction pattern of this specimen indicated the presence of the tetragons: carbide reported earlier,3 (a = 6.772A, c = 9.427A), plus cementite (O), plus an unknown structure. THE responses to the request of the Finance Committee have been coming in with gratifying results, .but there have also been about a dozen letters received objecting in various ways to the voluntary subscription. These can be summarized as: First.-That the dues should have been increased, and thus impose the same burden on everyone. This would not have met the present situation, as under the constitution no increase could be effective until 1922. Second.-The Institute should 'live within its means, and reduce its expenses to correspond with its income. As far -as possible this was done by deferring the publication of Volume LXIV until 1921, although the papers published in that volume, were presented at the meeting in February, 1920. It is to avoid being obliged to do this again that the subscription is asked, as we feel that it is, a duty we owe to our membership_ to give them the papers presented at as early a date as possible.. Our financial situation is due to the very large increase in the cost of publication; owing to the high price of paper and printing. The cost of paper is now decreasing, and we hope that there will be' wage adjustments that will permit a lower cost for printing. Under present conditions each volume of our TRANSACTIONS costs three times as much as it did in 1917 and we would be able to publish only one' volume per year. Third.-That there are too many papers published that are 'of no interest to the writer of them .complaint.-This is undoubtedly true, but it must be remembered that the membership of the Institute includes all branches of mining and metallurgy and that all these branches are entitled to be' represented in our TRANSACTIONS by papers.

THIS nation has been depending upon the Lake Superior iron ranges for most of its iron ore requirements for over half a century. Furthermore, it can continue to draw the major portion of its ore requirements from the same source for another century or more, but to accomplish this, great changes must take place in the present ore mining industry. Preliminary preparations for these changes are now underway and in the next few years decisions of far-reaching importance must be made. But to understand the situation, it is first necessary to know something of the nature and occurrence of the Lake Superior iron formation. So far as is known, the merchantable grades of iron ore remaining in the various Lake Superior ranges are as shown in Table 1, which shows that

BENEFICIATION of iron ores from the blast-furnace point of view means more than the usual enrichment of the iron contents by the removal of a large part of the clay, carbonic acid gas, silica, or moisture of the natural ore; it includes all these, but it also embraces several other mechanical .processes made , necessary by the exacting requirements of present-day blast-furnace practice. The increasing use of iron- bearing by-products, to as much as a third or more of the total ore burden, has introduced still another series of processes for improving the blast-furnace ore burden. As we look back over the past three decades of blast- furnace practice 'in. this country, we see that many of the blast-furnace troubles were directly due to lack of proper preparation of the iron ore burden,, and we realize that beneficiation in one form or another would have remedied the trouble.
