The results of the cyanide-operations, given in detail in the following paper, show the progress that is being made at the Minas del Tajo. The old pan-amalgamation process, in operation up to and including 1905, while paying a profit on high-grade ores, was no longer able to treat profitably the ores in sight at that time; hence an alteration in the process was imperative. A search through the available literature shows that the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has not been systematically studied. This seems rather odd because all three elements are fairly abundant and have better than average corrosion resistance; however, they have high melting points, which makes experimental work difficult. Cobalt and nickel form a continuous series of solid solutions and each metal dissolves about 7.5 per cent silicon. Many ternary alloys have been studied and the results have been published in a great many different ways, but to present such data in a short but clear and understandable manner is still a problem. The following pages describe the results of the study of 76 alloys from which the partial ternary diagram (Fig. 1) of the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has been drawn. The alloys were chosen according to the plan in Fig. la by taking definite ratios of cobalt and nickel, such as 70 Ni, 30 Co or 40 Ni, 60 Co, and adding silicon in various percentages. Each section was studied in detail by means of thermal analysis and microscopic examination, but only two of these detailed sections were thought necessary in the point perspective drawing to give a comprehensive picture of the liquidus, solidus and solid transformations that take place over the temperature ranges studied. Complete thermal analyses and microscopic data are given in Table 1. Experimental Procedure The alloys were prepared from metals of commercial purity, as follows: electrolytic nickel 99.60 + 0.35 Co; chemically purified silicon 99.79 per cent plus impurities of Fe 0.027, A1 0.008, Ca 0.014, C 0.004, N² 0.10; and cobalt 98.82 per cent plus impurities of Ni 0.42, Fe 0.12, CaO 0.27, S 0.012, Mn 0.10 and SiO² 0.15. It should be noted that the largest impurity in cobalt is nickel, one of the alloying elements. IT has been known for several years1 that certain alloys of the Konal type, containing commercial cobalt (99.32 per cent C0 and 0.42 per cent Ni) and varying amounts of ferrotitanium, exhibit very high tensile strengths at 600°C. However, their pro-portional limits and yield points are rela-tively low. Published data1 for the alloys quenched in water from 950°C. and then tested at 600°C. are summarized in the upper section of Fig. I. Similar specimens that were aged at 650°C. for 72 hr., after quench and prior to testing at 600°C., gave the results shown in the lower section of Fig. I. In the present work the investigation of the properties of these materials has been extended by a study of the tensile deforma- tion characteristics in moderately long-time tests at 600°, 700° and 800°C. after quenching from various solution tempera-tures. The structure of GaAs-Ge heterojunctions prepared by a back-melting process was studied by X-rav diffraction, melallographic, and electron-micro-analyzer techniques. The boundary region between the GaAs and the germanium was found to consist of a four-layered band. A discontinuity between the two inner bands was brought about by solidification occurring simultaneously from the GaAs and the germanium side. The junction material OH either side of the central discotinuity was found to have grown as a single Crystal with the orientation of the parent substrate. It was found essential to determine the GaAs-Ge phase diagram. This was accomplished by a series of alloys containing 0 to 40 wt pet GaAs. Over this range the diagram is a simple eutectic with the eutectic point at 74 wt pet Ge and 845 C. The limiting- solubility of Coils in germanium was found to bc less than 5 wt pet. The Kossel divergent-beam X-ray technique was used to study orientation relationships across the boundary lager. A great deal of effort has been recently expended on the electrical properties of heterojunctions. Little attention, however, has been given to the metallurgical variables which may be of importance in the formation of the junctions. The present work was undertaken to investigate some of the more pertinent metallurgical aspects of interface-alloyed GaAs-Ge heterojunctions. Such parameters as solidification processes, composition gradients, orientation effects, and the accommodation of crystal structures have been the objects of study in this program. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Phase Diagram. The phase diagram of the GaAs-Ge pseudobinary system was determined by means of cooling curves. A Bridgeman furnace was employed with the center section maintained at 1200°C and the upper section at 800°C. Melts varying from 0 to 40 at. pct in GaAs content were used. Each charge was incapsulated under a two-thirds atmosphere of argon in a carbon-coated quartz tube. Five min in the furnace hot zone provided rapid melting and homogenization. The capsule was then removed to the cooler portion of the furnace. Cooling times were of the order of 3 min. The resulting homogeneous microstructure indicated that equilibrium conditions were obtained by this procedure. Formation of Heterojunctions. Rectangular parallelepiped single-crystal samples were cut with the large faces of either the (l00), (110), or (111) orientation. The remaining four surfaces were also cut to specific orientations to permit accurate relative orientation of the GaAs-Ge pairs. The

FEW phase diagrams of alloys composed of two transition metals have been adequately studied, probably because of the high melting points involved. Transition metals are the elements that have inner shells incompletely filled with electrons. They comprise groups IIIa to VIIIa of the periodic table, including more than half of all metals. We have chosen to study two systems whose comparatively low melting points allowed the alloys to be melted in a molybdenum resistance furnace. The nickel-palladium system proved to consist of a simple series of solid solutions, but iron-palladium manifested several remarkable features. The main characteristics of the latter diagram were decisively established, but lack of time prevented precise determination of phase boundaries. The gamma to alpha transformation in this system is unusual and warrants further study. Grigorjew1 determined the liquidus and solidus of the iron-palladium system by thermal methods. He found a minimum melting point, but no eutectic. He also found that palladium lowered the gamma to alpha and raised the gamma to delta transformation temperatures of iron, with a complete series of solid solutions existing between gamma iron and palladium. His measurements also indicated a compound or super-lattice near the composition FePd3. Jellinghaus2 found that annealing at 500° C. greatly increased the magnetic coercive force of an alloy of composition FePd. X-ray dif-fraction photographs showed that a tetragonal ordered phase had formed during the anneal.

Changes in magnetic properties with particle size are used to study the precipitation process in a Cu-Co alloy. In particular, the effect of a field during aging in producing anisotropy is shown to occur entirely during the growth of the particles, after precipitation is complete. HEAT-treatment in a magnetic field is done commercially to improve the magnetic properties of a number of materials. These can be divided into solid-solution alloys and precipitation alloys. The Permalloys are representative of the first type, and magnetic annealing greatly increases their maximum permeability. On the other hand, in precipitation alloys such Alnico 5 the important result is an increase in maximum energy product. The effect of the field in all cases is to bring about an additional magnetic anisotropy, uniaxial in nature, which makes the hysteresis loop more upright when measured in the direction in which the field was applied. The structural origin of the anisotropy brought about by magnetic annealing is not well understood. In the solid solution alloys, one possible explanation is based on ordering.' Another possibility is the orientation of like-atom pairs.' The precipitation systems known to respond to magnetic heat treatment are Alnico 2, in which the effect was first discovered," Alnico 5, cobalt ferrite (oxide),' and Cu-Co alloys.3 n these materials, the field affects the precipitation process itself in some way. Introduction Of the techniques reported for cyanide removal from effluents, alkaline chlorination is the most common (Fisher and Wasser, 1969; Reidt, 1969). Shortcomings with this technique are the high reagent costs, chlorine contamination, and potential formation of cyanogen chloride. Chemical oxidation methods are also not suitable to remove cyanide from effluents containing sulphides in suspension, such as flotation tailings. An inexpensive method for removing cyanide, combined cyanide and related species from waste waters has been developed in Inco laboratories. The method is based on the use of sulfur dioxide (or a sulfite), lime, and air as the reagents. The decomposition reactions of cyanide, combined cyanide, and related species are catalyzed by copper in solution. Complete removal of cyanide species, most of which are oxidized to cyanate, is obtained by treating copper containing cyanide effluents with sulfur dioxide-air mistures while maintaining the pH between 6 and 10 with addition of lime. The new approach can also be applied to selective destruction of cyanide and combined cyanide in effluents containing sulphides in suspension, such as pyrrhotite. Again, a sufficient amount of dissolved copper must be present or added. Metals and precious metals present in the effluents are recovered as hydroxides by adjusting the pH of the treated effluents to about 9-10. Using the new method, the anionic species are removed in the following order: Free CN- > Complex CN- > Thiocyanate The above removal sequence is unusual as oxidants such as chlorine and ozone oxidize thiocyanate preferentially over the combined cyanide.

My connection, under a commission from the Councils and Board of School Control of the city of Scranton, Pa., with a recent investigation of mine-caves and the resultant damages to surface-improvements, has led to the preparation, at the invitation of our Secretary, of the present paper. It is notorious that there are, in the anthracite-fields, frequent subsidences of the surface, due to the removal of the coal beneath. No particular attention is paid to such occurrences, unless they happen to injure surface-improvements. Many caves have happened in Scranton and its viciuity, which hare excited but little remark, since they have generally caused no serious damage. In August, 1909, a cave occurred in the Hyde Park section of the city, generally known as the West Side, which nearly destroyed school-house No. 16 and considerable adjacent property. Fortunately, there were no pupils in the building at the time; but the thought of the possible result, had the usual number of pupils and teachers been present, aroused the public to the gravity of the situation; and the School Board employed engineers to investigate the case. Two reports were made by separate sets of engineers, which differed in some particulars. These differences were pointed out in the public press and magnified, and the consequent agitation of the subject was taken up and greatly exaggerated by some of the metropolitan newspapers, giving to uninformed people the very erroneous impression that the whole city of Scranton was in danger of sinking into the bowels of the earth. All this tended to affect the credit of the city and to depress real-estate values. The matter was considered at a joint meeting of the Board of Trade, the Councils, and the School Board. The Hon. J. Pegmatites occur in abundance in certain areas of South West Africa and in adjacent parts of northern Cape Province in the Union of South Africa. Some of the pegmatite deposits were prospected before World War I, and intermittent mining was done during the period between the two World Wars. The deposits of the Jooste lithium mines became an important source of lepidolite, and beryl, columbite-tantalite, wolframite, and other minerals were produced. Since World War I1 prospecting and mining have been carried on vigorously, with the result that South West Africa produced nearly 3000 tons of beryl during 1949 through 1953, together with more than 40,000 tons of lithium minerals, chiefly lepidolite and petalite. Small amounts of tantalite, columbite, and other minerals have also been produced during the postwar period. Most of this mineral production has come from two pegmatite areas roughly outlined in Fig. 1. One is the Karibib-Omaruru area of north central South West Africa. The second is the northeastern part of the Orange River pegmatite area, which extends into adjacent parts of Namaqualand, in northern Cape Province of the Union of South Africa

The Pierrefitte mines, situated in the South of France, in the district of the Hautes-Pyrenees, owe their name to the fact that the first mining operations of any extent, and of comparatively reccnt date, were carried out in the neighborhood of the village of Pierrefitte, which is a branch terminus of the Midi railway. The Pierrefitte mines, however, embrace a wide extent of country and several different concessions, on most of which comparatively little exploration-work has been done. The portion of the property presently to be described is a zone running roughly E—W., over a distance of about 5 miles from the valley of Cauterets to the valley of Estaing, the ridge dividing these valleys being a spur of the main chain of the Pyrenees, and running more or less at right angles to it. According to local tradition, which various indications tend to confirm, these mines are of ancient date, the first workings being attributed to the Romans, who are supposcd to have sought not only the lead but also the silver which is contained in the ore. Old slags have been found in the neighborhood which might well have been produced from the cupellation of lead-ores. These old workings, while of considerable extent at times, do not seem to have extended beyond a depth of 100 ft., even this depth being somewhat exceptional. The old notarial records of the district show that mines were known to exist, and that they were even worked, in the sixteenth century, but since the mines were abandoned (by the Romans or others) considerably prior to this period, very little

THE etched microstructures of cold-worked alpha brasses, after reduc-tions in excess of about 20 per cent, exhibit dark lines or markings, which have been termed "deformation bands," "etch bands," and "strain markings." The terms will be used synonomously in this report. The markings are similar in their general appearance to etch figures found in cold-worked iron, aluminum and other cubic metals but in certain respects may differ noticeably. At reductions of from about 20 to 50 per cent in brass, they appear as straight dark lines of irregular spacing and at random directions in different grains, but apparently intimately associated with definite crystallographic planes, usually {111}, in each crystal. At higher reductions, the markings on the rolling plane tend to appear in a direction transverse to the rolling direction in all crystals but may bend away at considerable angles, particularly near grain boundaries. Samans,1 on the basis of X-ray and micrographic studies of two single crystals of brass, rolled to a 50 per cent reduction, showed that the lines of deformation were the edges of thin mechanical twins parallel to octahedral planes. Barrett and Levenson2-4 have made comprehensive studies of the deformation of iron and of aluminum. They show that in these two metals the deformation markings originate by division of the original homogeneous crystal into banded areas differing in orientation by an amount that increases with the degree of deformation. The markings thus cannot be twin bands, and Barrett, in a review of this subject,2 attributed Samans' results on brass to an accidental choice of deformation that left the bands in approximately a twinned relationship. On the other hand, Mathewson5 has suggested that in some cases mechanical twinning offers a better rationalization of the coverage of some (111) pole figures of worked brass than the assumption of band rotation into sym-metry positions. Considering next a deformed and annealed alpha brass, the most striking aspect of its microstructure is the multiplicity of twin bands.

IT is obvious that details such as the physical and chemical properties and methods of heat-treating of the materials mentioned must be omitted in a paper on the subject of materials used in oil-refinery pumps1. Only sufficient identification is given to enable the reader to find additional information from already published data. Also, the subject covers many operating conditions, but only the most important services can be discussed here. To the oil refiner, the pumping equipment is of vital interest. Practi-cally every refinery operation, from the charging of crude oil to a dis-tillation unit to the shipping of refined products, involves some form of pumping machinery. Intermediate refining stages involve a great variety of pumping machinery to carry out successfully the aims of the refinery technologist. Temperatures at which oils are handled vary from -50° F. to 900° F. Pressure may vary from subatmospheric to 2000 lb. per, sq. inch. The selection of the proper materials involves a careful consideration of the conditions under which the particular pump must operate. The four most important considerations are temperature, pressure, corrosion, and abrasion or wear. Consideration of temperature may be divided into three parts: (1) extremely low temperatures of the order of -50° F.; (2) temperatures at atmospheric or slightly above; (3) temperatures from 200° to 900° F. Pressures fall into two groups: (1) pressures reached by ordinary trade pumps of the order of 200 lb. per sq. in., (2) extreme pressure conditions involving pressures as high as 2000 lb. Noncorrosive and corrosive oils can be treated differently. Under the latter falls corrosion in the presence of water, which will occur up to 250° F. The second type of corrosion occurs in high-temperature pump-ing equipment, with temperatures from 450° to 900° F., largely caused by sulfur compounds. THE writer has dealt with the effect of various methods of melting copper upon the gas content of the metal.1 The copper referred to in his in his earlier paper was melted in the foundry both in the oil furnace and the electric furnace. As the metal, did not measure up to conductivity FIG. L -INGOT OF OVERPOLEP COPPER. standard, the term "casting copper" was applied to the material in the title of the paper. It was thought that some information in regard to the gases in a sample of overpoled copper might also be of interest, and through the courtesy of C. R. Stevens, superintendent of the copper mill of the Westinghouse Elec. & Mfg. Co., such a sample was obtained. The metal was chill-cast in the form of an ingot about 7 in. long, 2 ½ in. deep (from the base to the raised surface of the ingot) and from 1 3/8 to 1 7/8 in. wide. A photograph of part of the ingot is shown in Fig. 1. The effect of overpoling on the surface of the metal is here quite clearly shown.
