This paper is the third of a series treating of the relations of ores of the metals to igneous rocks. The first' outlined the general problem; the second2 proposed a classification of lode ores, and showed how the distribution of the deposits is in a certain measure controlled by the contour of the roof of the parent batholith. A number of mining districts were discussed, the examples being selected chiefly from group 2 of the classification. The proposed classification of lode deposits, briefly stated, is as follows: 1. Cryptobatholithic: near hidden batholiths which have not yet been exhumed by erosion. 2. Acrobatholithic: in and near cupolas or domes of batholiths—the high points of larger underlying masses. 3. Epibatholithic: on batholiths, near their rims, but below eroded cupolas, or below the highest points of the roofs. 4. Embatholithic: among closely-spaced outcrops which probably are parts of a single bathohth. The outcrops of invaded rocks predominate. 5. Endobatholithic. in and near roof pendants of large batholiths. The invading rocks predominate. 6. Hypobatholithic: in deeply-eroded batholiths, where even roof pendants have been eroded. Deposits of certain metals on the roofs of the batholiths are much more numerous in some positions than deposits of other metals, and the horizontal zonal arrangements of lodes of different metals are shown characteristically only in certain groups. In a large measure, also, the character of the fracturing and metallization is determined by the position on the roof of the batholith. The disseminated copper ores in porphyry constitute a clearly-defined type. All the deposits of these ores, as far as known, are in group 2. They appear to have been formed only in and around small upward projections of the parent granitic masses, and not low on the walls of the

The cost of tunneling is highly sensitive to the rock characteristics through which the tunnel is to be driven. These characteristics affect in a major way the rates at which tunnels and shafts can be driven and the degree to which the openings must be supported to maintain them in a permanent stable condition. Tunnel and shaft design and cost criteria have been computerized, permitting estimates of tunnel-shaft systems to be made directly from inputs of rock mechanics characteristics and other data. Curves of quantities of steel, rock bolts, and other rock support items as related to tunnel size and rock quality designation are presented. An illustrative example of the use of the program in calculating the cost of a hypothetical tunnel system is included.

BRINE was discovered at Avery Island, La., in 1790, but it was not until 1862 that rock salt was found about 13 ft below surface-the first discovery of rock salt on the continent. Maximum elevation of the island is 152 ft and elevation at the shaft 31 ft. The mining level is 530 ft below elevation at the shaft and the shallowest salt about 12 ft below surface. A shaft was sunk in 1869 when the mining operation started. In 1898 the present shaft was sunk, and the mine has been operated by International Salt Co. ever since.

THE value of carbon ratios in determining the boundaries of possible oil deposits appears to have passed the hypothetical stage. The theory that the ratio of fixed carbon in pure coals is an, invariable index of incipient metamorphism in both, surface and underground rocks and that it may be applied in defining the limits of petroleum, advanced by David White,1 has been received with keen interest by many petroleum geologists. Detailed isocarb maps have been prepared of the Pennsylvanian area of North Texas and Eastern Oklahoma by M. L. Fuller.2 A similar map of the coal-bearing area of West Virginia is given here. An isocarb3 is a line showing an equal fixed-carbon percentage, pure coal basis; the term has been proposed by David White to supersede a less expressive nomenclature. The term carbon ratio is applied to the percentage of carbon in pure coal after water and ash have been eliminated. As a comparatively small number of analyses have been made on this basis, it is usually necessary to compute the ratio by dividing the fixed carbon of the proximate analysis by the sum of the fixed carbon and volatile matter of the same analysis. Many thousands of proximate analyses have been made by the West Virginia Geological Survey, covering nearly every county in which coal is found. Numerous others have been made by the. POLISHING pure zinc differs somewhat from polishing less reactive metals. The problem is not that of finding a suitable reagent, but rather of producing the polish in such a way that the surface remains polished after it is removed from the polishing bath. In other words., the anodic film that is vital to the polishing mechanism' must be tightly adherent and nonporous. It is usually desirable that it be thin. Polishing solutions consist of proper proportions of an acid and a strong oxidizing agent. In electro-polishing, the external circuit acts as the oxidizing agent. The proportions are critical because the essential surface film must be maintained at approximately constant thickness during the polishing process. In the case of zinc, chiefly two oxidizing agents, chromic and nitric acids, have been used. The simplest polishing reagent is concentrated nitric acid. However, it has certain disadvantages. It tends to pit: an excessive amount of heat is evolved during polishing; and the oxide film that it produces is not very stable, so that the polished sur-

The United Verde Copper Company's mine is at Jerome, Ariz. The orebodies arc of the schist replacement type, the main sulfide mass being a large lens-shaped body approximately 7 acres in cross-sectional area. In general, the mineralization is found along the iron schist contact, with the orebodies extending about 1000 ft. along this contact and varying from a few feet to 250 ft. in width. Three types of ore are mined; schist porphyry and the so-called "heavy" or "massive sulfide" ore. Approximately 50 per cent. of the total tonnage mined at present is of the latter class. A representative analysis of this ore indicates 42 to 46 per cent. sulfur. Because of the high sulfur content, blasting in this ore is an extremely hazardous operation. not only does it endanger the lives of men who may be in the mine at blasting time but it also becomes a potential fire menace when timber is in close proximity to shots being fired in these massive sulfides. The origin of the fires of 38 years ago, embers of which are glowing to this day, may perhaps be attributed to dust explosions due to blasting in the massive sulfides of those early square-set stopes. Dust Explosions Dust explosions in coal mines are a common source of mine disasters. That such explosions may be of common occurrence in metal mines is not generally known, but it is known that metal-mine dust will explode and such explosions have been investigated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station. Samples of "heavy sulfide" ore from the United Verde mine were used in the tests. After studying the results of the tests it was concluded1 that: 1. Dust explosions were initiated in sulfide ore dust in the gallery with a charge of as low as 75 g. of 60 per cent. gelatin dynamite. 2. The exploding dust generated considerable pressure.

THE high copper price during the war stimulated the capacity to produce far beyond a possible normal consumption. The curves in Fig. 1 show this. The line YZ indicates, what the world production and consumption of primary copper nor-mally would have been, had not the 3 war upset the rhythm of industry. Granting that the maximum world production of 3,150,000,000 lb. in 1917 was obtained by crowding both the equipment and the grade of ore mined, yet in many instances addi-tional capital was invested, upon which the producer will be driven to earn at least a reasonable interest. During the period of deflation, or C liquidation, which we have entered, the consumption of copper will nat-urally be below the normal. Fig. 1 shows the actual consumption ex-pressed-in per cent. of normal : 1919, 96 per cent.; 1920, 94 per cent.; 1921, 70 per cent. The copper industry, consequently, faces: (1) Potential over-production capacity; I (2) Diminished consumption. To deny the existence of these factors would be illogical. To minimize the menace of this potential producing capacity might lead to regret. All past attempts at artificial control have not proved very successful. Obviously the remedy is to increase, if possible, the consumption of copper to a point where these factors cease to be dangerous. In ultimate analysis, this means: Produce an article so cheap and so good that no one can afford to use substitutes. The problem can be solved by: (1) Re-ducing price; (2) Improving product offered.

The area for which oil and gas developments in South Texas are reported for 1940 in this paper covers the same counties that were included in the reports for 1938 and 1939, with the addition of LaSalle County. LaSalle County is includcd in the Laredo district of South Texas, which totals seven counties for that district. The Corpus Christi district remains the same, with nine counties. The two districts together comprise what is known as the South Texas area for this report. Continued exploration along established trends and beyond proven field limits during 1940 provided South Texas with new fields and new producing levels at a rate of discovery fairly comparable with the high records set during recent years. The wells drilled in the counties within this district (including LaSalle) numbered 1656, approximately 8 per cent below the 1801 figure of last year. However, rank wildcats totaIed 336, an increase of 17.5 per cent compared to the 286 drilled in 1939. Therefore, since new field discoveries numbered 25 in 1940 against 29 in 1939, the rate of new field discoveries in 1940, based upon rank wildcats drilled, was I/I3.4 while that of 1939 was I/9.86, which shows a decrease of about 25 per cent in the rate of new fields. The rank wildcat tests in 1940 gave the following results: 18 produced oil, 4 produced distillate with gas, 3 produced. only gas, and 3r1 were dry holes (Table 5). Of the 1320 tests drilled in already proven fields or as extensions to pro+en areas (representing a decline of 12.8 per cent from last year's total of 1515 tests), 1048 produced oil or distillate, 60 produced gas and 212 were dry holes (Table 4). Of the producers, 50 found new sands or crude-in-distillate-sands in existing fields. Among the several fields subjected to extensive development were: Colorado, Jim Hogg County; East White Point, San Patricio and Nueces County; Rincon and Sun, Starr County; Glen, Webb and Zapata Counties; Wade City and Orange Grove, Jim Wells County; Stratton and South Clara Driscoll, Nueces County, and Aransas Pass, San Patricio and Aransas Counties. The development of important crude reserves on structures formerly considered primarily distillate fields has probably been the most important phase of the year's operations in South Texas. The Rincon, Stratton, Agua Dulce, Wade City, Odem and Robston fields provided the new crude sand discoveries. At some places crude production was opened by exploratory wells that found new sand horizons; in others by flank wells that found already discovered distillate sands sufficiently low to provide crude production. Rincon, Starr County, with its multiple sands, is now believed to be one of South Texas' largest crude-oil reserves. Offshore drilling showed important results during the year, including the discovery of two new submerged fields and the extension of the East White Point field into offshore Nueces County.
