DURING upwards of three thonsand miles of canoc-travel in South America, including several mishaps, the writer has unfortunately lost his book of notes taken during the year 1894 in Dutch Guyana, or Surinam. But a year spent in a foreign country, visiting its principal mining properties, is necessarily productive of indelible memories and impressions, and some of these may be of interest to the Institute. The Guyanas include British, or Demerara, Dutch, or Surinam, French, or Cayenne, and the Disputed Territory, or that portion of Brazil on the northeast coast of South America. After passing the picturesque mountainous coasts of Colombia and Venezuela, one reaches a low, flat mud-bank which extends far out into the sea, so that from the steamer, over a couple of leagues of turbid, shallow water, one call just see the dismal outline of the pestilential "bush" that fronts the Caribbean sea, clear around to the mouth of the Amazon. Here, iii the order mentioned above, are the Guyanas. So much has been said about this out-of-the-way section during the late excitement over the Venezuela boundary question, that the historical part of the subject may be advantageously condensed. Gold-mining in the Guyanas is altogether placer-mining, and is of the same general nature throughout; hence by describing the methods in use in Surinam and the results there achieved, ail idea will be given of the work throughout the field. The product of this section is about three to four millions of dollars annually, mostly from Demerara, not because of superior richness of its placers, but as a result of its very much larger population, which exceeds twice the aggregate census returns of both Surinam and Cayenne. ThE solution of a diatomic gas such as 0, or N2 in a metal usually follows Sieverts' law; i. e., Here C is the solute concentration at equilibrium and P, the gas pressure. The proportionality constant Ks is also the equilibrium constant for the reaction 1/2 02 (at pressure, P) - 0 (in solution at [21 concentration., C). to use oxygen as an illustrative gas. Sieverts' law is therefore interpreted to indicate that diatomic gases go into metallic solution atomically and that the solute "gas" atoms interact negligibly with each other. Of course, this interpretation is strictly valid only over the temperature interval in which the reaction indicated in [Z] can be investigated. At temperatures several hundreds of degrees below this interval, the possibility of interactions between solute atoms is conceivable. Indeed, from internal-friction measurements some evidence for the existence of groupings of oxygen atoms in tantalum solid solutions was presented a few years ago.1,2 Over a range of solute concentration, the experimental oxygen internal-friction peak in tantalum, measured as a function of temperature at constant frequency of vibration, can be described as the sum of two elemental peaks, each corresponding to a separate relaxation process. At 0.7 cps, the height of the elemental peak found at 137°C is proportional to the oxygen content, whereas the height of the one at 162°C varies as the square of the oxygen concentration. The 137°C peak was presumed to arise from the stress-induced ordering of oxygen atoms among various classes of octahedral sites in the manner proposed by Snoek.3 The 162°C peak was attributed to a somewhat similar stress-induced ordering process, in which each oxygen atom was interacting with a neighboring oxygen atom. Similarly, the experimental peak due to nitrogen in tantalum can also be described as the sum of two peaks. The height of one varies as the nitrogen concentration and the other as the square of this quantity. In fact, some evidence of solute interactions exist for all oxygen and nitrogen solid solutions of Group V transition metals. However, the interaction energy was not obtained previously for any alloy. The determination of this quantity, as a part of a more intensive study of the interaction between oxygen atoms in solid solution in tantalum, is reported in this paper. The following article is based on observation of college graduates entering the steel industry in technical work made during the Past 25 Years, the first five of which were spent as a college instructor in two engineering schools, and the last 20 in the employ of a large steel company that has hired hundreds of engineering graduates for steel-mill operations. The college graduates encountered during this period have come from many colleges representing schools in Eastern States, Midwestern Universities, many Southern colleges, and many smaller colleges and normal training schools mostly in western Pennsylvania and Ohio. The college training of these students for engineering work naturally has varied widely and the educational qualifications of the entrants have been in many ways different. It was found at an early date that graduates of standard engineering colleges were much more adaptable than graduates in science from nontechnical schools. The engineering students seemed to be more suited to actual work in steel plants and in general were better able to grasp a knowledge of the operations they observed. However, although the graduates of engineering schools have had somewhat better training in physics, mathematics, and engineering, it has been a general and continual observation that most of the students employed have had inadequate training in the fundamental sciences. Since this discussion relates entirely to metallurgical engineers it should be emphasized that students taking metallurgical engineering courses in college seem to be poorly trained in organic chemistry-physics, physical chemistry, thermodynamics, and any higher form of mathematics than simple calculus. It has been noted frequently that young engineers faced with problems in a mill that involve some mathematics generally flounder badly, and that they have little conception of physical chemistry. Another common deficiency lies in the young graduate's lack of knowledge of where to look for the more detailed literature on any subject. He reverts instinctively to some college textbook whose coverage is usually very elementary. It is recommended that such textbooks contain a bibliography of the source literature. and that students be taught to use the original data. Many of the students had had previous courses in college dealing with metallurgical work such as steel melting, metallograhy, etc.r but it was found that their grasp of these subjects was extremely sketchy. It was soon realized that an ordinary engineering graduate could be taught more about steel melting and manufacturing processes in a few weeks in a plant than he could learn in a college course on such subjects. A similar statement may be made regarding the ability of students to conduct laboratory work. Their lack of technique and skill in handling equipment and setting up experiments was soon apparent. The effect of clustering on the superconducting properties of Al-Zn alloys has been studied by the ballistic induction techniques. The superconducting critical temperature, T,, changes when zinc-rich clusters are formed. The change in T, depends on the concentration and may be positive or negative, but always correlates with an effective decrease in the solute concentration of the alloy. Reversion after clustering effectively returns a 5 at. pct Zn alloy to the quenched state. These methods might be use&lly extended to the Al-Mg system, where X-ray data are difficult to obtain. In very dilute Al-Zn alloys, as in other tin,' indium, aluminum,2 or tantalums base solid solutions, there is a decrease in the superconducting critical temperature, Tc, roughly proportional to the temperature independent resistivity, i.e., -0.2°K per pS2cm. With increasing solute concentration, the T, generally reaches a minimum and then increases4 to a value well above that for the pure solvent. The change of T, with solute concentration follows an empirical formulation involving two constants which correlate with the scattering cross section of the impurities. As will be shown below, the Al-Zn alloys more concentrated than 1or2at. pct do not follow the empiricism, probably because they are unstable even when rapidly quenched.5 However, it seems possible to study at least the later stages of solute clustering by precise measurements of the 1', following various thermal treatments. A few experiments on quenched alloys, aged alloys, and tests on reversion are reported here. The heat treatments selected for obtaining the quenched and aged states were mainly deduced from the work of Dash and Fine.6 For the quenched state, specimens were homogenized at 480°C, quenched to -160°C, and immediately transferred and mounted in liquid nitrogen. Measurements on the superconducting properties and residual resistivities were then made at helium temperatures, after which the specimens were aged at room temperature for 3 to 5 hr, i.e., much longer than the time required for clustering to be essentially completed. The superconducting properties and residual resistivities were once again examined. To reach the reverted state of the A1-5at. pct Zn alloy, the aged specimen was heated for 5 min at 200°C and then tested as above.

IT may perhaps seem to you that I have deviated from sequence by having entered into the narration of this arrangement of the bellows, but, although they are not furnaces or vessels for containing the melts, they are essential agents for bringing to port the bark of your labors. Returning to our regular pathway, and supposing that, besides making the moulds, you have melted and cast not only statues and bells but also guns, it is true that a certain procedure is required in order to finish them. For this you should have the moulds full, and they should have come out very well, for in truth reason does not allow that they turn out otherwise for one who uses precaution. [II2V] Then you have taken your casting from the pit and have freed it of clay. Since I have told you nothing beyond this, do not be dismayed if you see the castings so rough and in a form that scarcely shows what they really are, for I wish to open up part of the way into the great labor of finishing them so that it may seem to you that you have been somewhat helped by me. Therefore, when it is a gun, first see that the iron spindle that has been placed in the middle of the core is taken out. You can do this easily by striking the heel of the core, especially if the spindle had first been covered with ashes, hemp, or a little rope. Then saw off the feeding head above the mouth, using either a dun steel saw with tiny straight teeth that has been tempered with oil or some other fat, or a hay sickle whose edge is gently hit by a little hammer. Then have the clay that is attached to the curls or other bronze parts lifted away with a chisel. Then with a scouring brush and water uncover the emblems, coats of arms, borders, and cornices that you made as ornaments. Striking it with a hammer, push inwards every superfluous bit of bronze. Finally, having cleaned the bronze by washing, scraping, and cutting away every bit of clay, strike its surfaces gently with a large hammer and thus make it very smooth. Likewise finish the mouth and all its cornices as exactly and completely as possible with files and any other instrument that serves best. WHEREVER the amount of work renders it practicable the plan of using permanent standard solutions, in connection with the colorimetric carbon test, affords such manifold advantages that it is to be strongly recommended. That it has not attained a wider and more general application, is mainly due to the fact that, as the method is generally employed, the difficulty attending the production of the colors, and their doubtful stability when produced, have been only too evident to those who have undertaken their composition. The old method of using standard solutions made from sugar, coffee, etc., has always been hampered by the tendency of the colors to change upon exposure to the light, and the consequent liability to serious error, unless they are closely watched. Appreciating these difficulties, while recognizing the desirability of permanent colors, Mr. Magnus Troilius, at the suggestion of Prof. F. L. Erkmann, investigated the properties of cobalt, copper and ferric chlorides, with the view of determining their efficacy in the production of standard solutions. His results, as obtained, seem to have been satisfactory, but his treatment failed to eliminate many of the objections that have rendered the use of organic colors undesirable. The

The solidification mechanism of experimental steel ingots (7x7x20 in.) was studied by thermal analysis. It was determined that solidification proceeds in wave-like fashion at rates which are determined by the carbon level, superheat, and mold thickness. The thermal cycles of the mold walls were related to the course of solidification. ESPITE marked advances in the field of solid state transformation, metallurgical research has contributed comparatively little exact quantitative data on the mechanism of solidification of metals. There is, therefore, a great need for such data in the various metallurgical industries. The mechanics of solidification of ingots have been investigated in the past primarily by studies of the rate of skin formation as indicated by bleeding or "pour out" tests. The "pour out" method, however, is a tool which gives only approximate information. In the case of alloys with wide solidification ranges, such as irons and certain nonferrous alloys, the method will not work at all; in the case of alloys of intermediate solidification ranges, such as commercial steels, the information may be misleading. Thus, the general adoption of this method has resulted in divergent conclusions regarding the solidification process. Chipman and Fondersmith1 by means of bleeding tests have shown that the linear growth of a solidifying ingot wall follows a parabola of the general form, D = K C, with the start of solidification delayed until superheat is exhausted, as indicated by the constant C. These tests were carried only to a wall thickness of about 5 in. using an ingot of approximately 17x39 in. in cross-section; hence the latter stages of solidification were not studied. Matuschka2-3 indicated that linear solidification of ingots is rapid at first, then slow, but toward the end of solidification the rate becomes extremely rapid again. Spretnak's4 bleeding studies indicated that, wall growth is expressed more rigorously by two parabolas, and that their point of intersection corresponds to a change of solidification mode from columnar to equiaxed. Spretnak also showed that the K values of the first parabola are always the same regardless of superheat. Nelson bled ingots of square cross-section and found that linear wall growth is initially rapid but decreases continually until the end of solidification. He also concluded that rate of solidification in ingots of square cross-section increases 2.15 pct for every 10 pct increase in cross-sectional area of the mold. The mold ratios considered (ratio of cross-sectional area of the mold to cross-sectional area of the ingot) were all less than 2 to 1. The subject of solidification has also been treated mathematically in many cases, but because of the lack of accurate thermal constants and the simplifying assumptions required, as their authors generally acknowledge, they represent only approaches to the actual conditions of ingot solidification. A third method of studying solidification is the electrical analogue method promulgated by Pasch-kis6-7 and by Jackson and coworkers.8 This method treats solidification as a heat transfer problem with the solidification cycle synthesized on an electrical circuit. Paschkis in his treatment of solidification considered the fact, which was generally ignored, that solidification of steel is not simply the growth of a plane solid wall but a more complex process occurring over a temperature range as indicated by the constitution diagram. Undoubtedly, the anomalous results obtained by bleeding tests arise from the inability to measure quantitatively this mushy condition. The shape of Paschkis' solidification curves are more nearly in accord with those of Matuschka, in that they indicate rapid linear solidification at the beginning and end of solidification with intermediate solidification occurring at a slower rate. Paschkis indicates a definite lengthening of solidification time with increasing superheat. Thermal analysis is a direct method providing exact information for all types of metals regardless of solidification range and was thus adopted in the present program to follow the entire course of solidification from the surface to the centerline of the ingots. The method has the added advantage of being adaptable to following the thermal cycle of the ingot mold during the course of solidification. Test Methods The ingots studied were of square cross-section, 20 in. long, tapered from 71/4 in. at the top to 63/4 in. at the bottom, and fed with a hot top 7 in. in diam and 12 in. high. New Mexico retained its position in 1938 as the sixth largest oil-producing state, with a total production of 35,510,176 bbl. This was 2,875,598 bbl. less than the 1937 production of 38,485,774 bbl., or a decrease of 0.077 per cent, which was caused by the lack of pipe-line facilities and storage at the pipe-line terminals. The production for Lea County (excluding Maljamar) was 32,926,788 bbl.; for Eddy County (including Maljamar) was 2,225,411 bbl.; and for northwestern New Mexico (San Juan and McKinley Counties), 357,977 bbl. The average daily nonmarginal well allowable for Lea County on Jan. 1, 1938, was 65 bbl. At the close of the year it was 49 bbl. The average daily pipe-line runs for domestic consumption were less than the state allowables recommended by the United States Bureau of Mines. There was a demand for Artesia crude for foreign export, which if included in the daily production for New Mexico would be slightly in excess of the daily production recommended for New Mexico by the Bureau of Mines. The daily average production for the year was 97,329 barrels. There were 622 completions in the state, of which 520 were oil wells; 16 hydrocarbon gas wells; 5 carbon dioxide gas wells, and 81 dry holes. Of the dry holes 38 were in or near-by proven fields and the remainder, 43, were wildcats. Five new fields were discovered in New Mexico during 1938, three in Lea County and two in Eddy County. Southeastern New Mexico Lea County.—The Monumcnt field was the largest producing field in Lea County, with 9,440,334 bbl., and was closely followed by the Eunice field with 8,872,335 bbl. The Hobbs field was third with 5,010,414 bbl. The greatest activity in Lea County was in the Vacuum pool, with 129 completions, of which 126 were oil wells and three were dry holes. The Texas Company completed its Corbin NO. 1 in the KW 1/4 SW1/4 sec. 10, T. 18 S., R. 33 E. in August. This well was drilled to a depth of 5118 ft. in a white sand, encountering salt water. It was plugged back to 4315 ft, and pumped 43 bbl. of 36" gravity oil in 12 hr. It was approximately 6 miles southwest of the closest production in the Vacuum

H. H. Bleakney (Dept. of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa, Canada)— The work of Dr. Machlin and his colleagues at Columbia University is so scholarly that one hesitates to take issue with them. Nevertheless the writer feels compelled to enter a demurrer to the mechanism of intercrystalline cracking proposed in this paper. The principal obstacle to its acceptance is found in its preoccupation with purely mechanical influences and its disregard for the chemical effect of impurities. The writer believes that the destruction of metallic cohesion by concentration of impurities at the grain boundaries is a necessary and sufficient condition for the development of intercrystalline cracking; and he believes that discussion of the numerous mechanical explanations proposed should wait until some valid objection to the chemical hypothesis has been advanced. It is nearly twenty years since Gillett" drew attention to the possibility that the chemical influence of precipitation might be the cause of intercrystalline cracking. As early as 1935, Greenwood'" remarked that grain-boundary precipitation of impurities in lead appeared to promote intercrystalline cracking. Again in 1939, Scott commented as follows on a paper by Thielemann and Parker:'" "There are at least two familiar phenomena that can influence grain-boundary cohesion: 1) intergranular oxidation; and 2) grain boundary precipitation. An important consideration in this work, therefore, is to determine which, if either, of these factors is responsible for the low values of cohesive strength observed." In 1952. the writer presented evidence," some original and some abstracted, which indicated that in copper, silver, aluminum, lead and iron, intergranular cohesion was a function of the purity of the metal. In 1954 Glen, discussing a paper by Ridley and Tapsell14 indicated his belief in a precipitation mechanism for the intercrystalline embrit-tlement of molybdenum steel and suggested that with an absolutely pure metal it would be almost impossible to obtain an intercrystalline crack. The laminarturbulent transition was studied for monodisperse rigid polymer latices as functions of particle diameter and concentration at several tube diameters. Breaks in the graph of friction factor US Reynolds number were used to characterize the transition; rates of shear were sufficiently high so that Newtonian behavior at the high shear limiting viscosity could be assumed. No abnormal behavior was noted at concentrations below 30 volume percent. At higher concentrations, suppression of turbulence was observed with critical Reynolds numbers rising to as high as 5,500 at 50 volume percent. No definite effect on the transition was noted due to variation of particle size or tube diameter. The type of surfactant used to stabilize the latex was found to have an important influence on the critical Reynolds number. INTRODUCTION For some polymer solutions and solid-in-liquid suspensions, the transition from laminar behavior to turbulence in pipeline flow has been reported to take place at unusually low1-5 and in some cases at higher than normal6,7 critical Reynolds numbers. Extreme values of critical Reynolds numbers (NRe*) have been found to range from 1 to 6,000, as opposed to the values of 2,000 to 3,500 which are obtained for ordinary liquids. Observations have also been reported of drag reduction in fully developed turbulent flow, i.e., a decreased value of the friction factor in the Reynolds number-friction factor plot6*10-14 in colloidal and polymeric fluids. In some cases, turbulence suppression (unusually large values of Nre*) was noted to occur preceding the drag reduction,6 while a normal transition was noted in other cases of drag reduction.14 To relate the occurrence of turbulence suppression and drag reduction to the molecular or particulate structure of the fluid, it is desirable to characterize the structural variables with some precision. For most colloidal dispersions and polymeric fluids, this is very difficult; particle sizes, shapes and stiffnesses may vary over wide ranges in the same sample. Recently, however, a colloidal fluid has become available which consists of rigid spherical particles of highly uniform diameter dispersed in a simple Newtonian liquid. These are monodisperse polymer latices, prepared by carefully controlled emulsion polymerization reactions. The purpose of this research was to study the transition to turbulence in these well-characterized colloidal fluids as a function of concentration, particle diameter and tube diameter. Typical flow curves of latices of high solids content are shown in Fig. 1. While these curves were obtained with monodisperse latices, the general shape of the curve is also typical of a polydisperse latex. It is observed that a shear-thinning region occurs for low to moderate rates of shear. At sufficiently high shearing rates a limiting Newtonian viscosity is reached. The viscosity µ diminishes with decreasing volume fraction 4 at all shear rates. The process of' spheroidization, or more properly coarsening, of Al-CuAl,eutectic alloy specimens with various initial microstructures was studied by quantitative metallographic and X-ray diffraction techniques. By measuring the rale at which specimens with a very fine dispersion of phases (produced by quenching molten droplets of the alloy in water) coarsened it uias determined that the rate-controlling mechanism for coarsening was diffusion, probably of aluminum in the aluminum-rich phase. The lamellae in specimens with a high degree of microstructural and cr-ystallog/uphic anisotropy (produced hy unidirectional solidification of ingots) thickened during heat treatment by recession of the CuAl, platelets from jaulted regzons, yet the specinlens retained a very high degree of. anisotropy after prolonged heat treatments at a temperature within 8°C of the eutectic temperature. In such specimens the crystallographic orientation relationship between the phases remained constant and no change in the crystallographic substructure occurred. Based on these observations a model was developed for the coarsening—or rate of' thicken-ing—oj- the lamellar structures which predicts that the rate of decrease of interface area is proportional to the square of lamellar interface area. Experiments with degenerate and very coarse lamellar microstruc -tures preduced by extremely slow unidirectional solidification) indicate that initial microstructure is a most important factor governing the final micro-structure after heat treatment. The particle size and shape of dispersed phases are important parameters affecting the properties of a wide variety of two-phase materials. As is well-known, varietythe dispersed-phase particles tend to coarsen at appropriately high temperatures because the interface energy of the system is reduced by the concomitant reduction in interface area. THE " Munroe effect" of shaped explosive charges was discovered by Charles E. Munroe more than 50 years ago (in 1888), but it was not until World War II that it was put to any practical use. Both Allied and Axis armies used the principle effectively in bazooka projectiles, artillery projectiles and in fixed shaped charges. The first two were used primarily to combat tanks and other armor and the latter to assault pillboxes and other fixed concrete emplacements. Many engineers and others who saw the military application of the jet effect of shaped charges believed application would be possible in many industrial fields where blasting is used, such as mining and quarrying. Some work has already been done on the problem of making shaped charges applicable to mining operations. Experimentation conducted at the National Tunnel and Mines' was directed primarily along the lines of use of shaped charges for secondary blasting in connection with long-hole stoping methods. Experimentation initiated earlier and conducted by the author2 at the University of Utah on a more scientific basis was directed at revealing the basic principles of the functioning of shaped charges, as well as the feasibility of using them in mining operations after the principles of their operation had been clearly defined. It was found that: (I) a given design of charge required an optimum standoff to make it most effective, either in penetrating solid rock or steel (see Fig 3); (2) for a given design of charge there exists an optimum ratio of charge diameter to charge height above which the increase in effectiveness of the charge decreases rapidly (see Figs 4 and 5); (3) partial confinement has the effect of making charge performance much more consistent; (4) the higher power and higher velocity explosives tested are much more effective than relatively low-strength explosives; and (5) shaped charges may be adaptable to mining operations in secondary breakage and drilling blasting holes. Fig I is a diagrammatic sketch of the action of a shaped charge for two types of cavities, while Fig 2 shows the approximate manner in which the jets are believed to be formed when an explosive wave encounters the cavity, approaching it from the top. The experimentation already completed has laid the foundation for further research in the study of shaped charges. THIS note reports a determination of the melting point of germanium, and the liquidus of the Ge-Ga alloys; lattice constants of the a phase are given. The alloys were prepared by melting germanium (>20 ohm-cm resistivity) and gallium (99.6 pct) in evacuated silica tubes. The materials (50 to 70 g) were heated at 1000°C, held in the liquid state for about ¾ hr, and then cooled rapidly in the tubes. Points on the liquidus were obtained by thermal analysis which consisted of obtaining time-temperature data during heating and cooling the materials in high purity graphite crucibles and a helium at- mosphere. Temperatures were determined with a Pt—Pt-Rh thermocouple protected by a silica sheath. The couple was calibrated against a National Bureau of Standards calibrated couple and also against the freezing points of copper, silver, aluminum, and the 28.1 wt pct Cu, 71.9 wt pct Ag alloy eutectic. The samples for X-ray analysis were prepared by heating small pieces of the ingots in evacuated glass or quartz tubes at temperatures between 600" and 900°C for periods ranging from 2 hr to 22 days, periods deemed sufficient for equilibrium to be attained, followed by quenching in water. The heat-treated samples were ground to powder for X-ray analysis. The lattice constants of the germanium-rich phase (a) were determined with a baok-reflection focusing camera. The: mysterious Lake Erie price for iron ore, established each spring, determines the maximum price that will be paid during the following season for ore of Mesabi Non-Bessemer base grade. This price is important to the ore producers, hut since most of the ore in the Lake Superior district is owned or controlled by consuming interests, the really important question to them is not the price of ore but how much it will cost them to mine and transport their season's requirements to their furnace plants. However, a few million tons are actually sold each year, and considerable quantities are traded for mixing purposes, and the negotiations lor these sales and trades usually begin with some reference to the Lake Erie price. There is no difficulty with the Lake Erie price itself or with the manner in which it is established, but the system prescribed for determining the values of ores that are not exactly base grade is incomplete. The Lake Erie price takes into consideration only the iron and phosphorus contained in the ore, but when the ore producer is negotiating a sale or trade, he is confronted by the fact that his ore must he studied and the price adjusted, not only on the basis of the iron and phosphorus analyses, as specified by the Lake Erie price, but also on the basis of silica! alumina, manganese, structure, etc. The vague and unsatisfactory methods used in making these adjustments bear some relation to the manner in which the ore is supposed to act in the blast furnace. The ore producer may not understand all of the idiosyncrasies of the blast furnace, but if the smelting-plant operators have a system more accurate than the Lake Erie price method for determining the relative values of different ores, why not pass this information on to the ore producers, so that they can make use of it and perhaps modify their practice in such a manner as to benefit both themselves and their customers? There is a lack of understanding and appreciation between these two groups that may, to some extent, be unavoidable, but in the interests of efficiency and conservation rules that are more accurate and complete than the Lake Erie price method in use at the present time should be established for the guidance of the ore producers. Recently a paper was read before the Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association, by Mr. G. W. Hewitt, Manager Production, Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Department, Wheeling Steel Corporation, in which he explained how his company determines the relative values of different grades of Non-Bessemer ore. The effects of magnesium-rich surface layers of varying thickness on the mechanical properties of LiF have been studied. The yield stress, critical tensile stress, and work-hardening slope increase linearly with layer thickness, while the strain to fracture decreases yapidly with increasing layev thickness. The results of tension tests, supplemente!d by metallogvaphic evidence, indicate that the yield stress and the critical tensile stress of LiF are not determined by surface-source operation. DESPITE many studies, which have recently been reviewed,' certain fundamental aspects of the plasticity of LiF remain obscure. For instance, one question still awaiting a satisfactory resolution is: does the nucleation and/or multiplication of dislocations in LiF occur preferentially near the crystal surface? It is now well-known that mobile dislocation half-loops are readily introduced into LiF by surface damage and that the mechanical properties of LiF are affected by such surface damage. However, it is not known whether, in the absence of large numbers of artificially introduced surface sources, dislocations arise more easily near the crystal surface than in the crystal interior. It is also not known to what extent existing mobile dislocations multiply preferentially near the crystal surface. The present work is an experimental study of these matters. A short investigation of the effect of magnesium -alloyed surface layers on the deformation of LiF single crystals has been published by Westwood.~ Some relevant conclusions drawn from this research are restated here for purposes of comparison with the present work. 1) Tests on as-cleaved, chemically polished, coated and uncoated specimens show that a coating can restrict the operation of artificially introduced surface sources, thereby raising the yield stress. A coating also decreases the initial rate of work hardening of as-cleaved LiF crystals by reducing the number of active dislocation sources, so that mutual dislocation interference effects are lessened. 2) A catastrophic breakthrough of groups of edge dislocations piled up against the coating can cause stress drops in the stress-strain curve. 3) A surface coating can act as a stable barrier to the egress of dislocations, causing pile-up,

THE experiments here described were made under my supervision while temporarily acting as head of the Department of Metallurgy at the Missouri School of Mines, at Rolla. The work was done by Messrs. W. E. Brown, W. C. Richards, and F. L. L. Wilson, and the description of the results forms a portion of a thesis presented for the degree of Bachelor of Science. These results are submitted because I have seen no description of the application of pot roasting to the treatment of a copper-concentrate. This work followed that already described in the discussion of the ' Lime-Roasting of a Galena-Concentrate,"' and was similarly occasioned by the lack of a furnace of the reverberatory type in which the copper-concentrates could be smelted. The material for the tests was a mixture of three lots available. The first consisted of 8-mm. jig-concentrates and the second of 0.5 mm. table-concentrates, from the San Juan district, Colo. Both contained pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena. The third was a lot of copper-ore, found in the laboratory, which had been crushed through 8-mm. screen, and had at some previous time, before the laboratory roasting-furnace was torn down, received a partial roasting. The analyses of these ores are given in Table I. In order to determine the applicability of pot-roasting as to each lot of ore, and the effect of varying proportions of lime, six preliminary tests were made in a " size N " Battersea crucible, 9 in. high by 6 in. in diameter at top, with a 5/8 in. hole bored through the bottom. FOR a great part of the progress of the world we are indebted to the works of engineers. It is to them that we owe our means of rapid transportation, our canals, our railroads, our bridges, many of our automatic machines, and most of those appliances which, by facili tating or decreasing the amount of human labor to be expended and by utilizing the great forces of nature, have made the present progress of the world possible. Their education is a matter of momentous interest to the whole civilized world. I have, therefore, thought that some discussion of the theory upon which their education should be based would be of interest to this body, and have ventured a few reflections and suggestions upon the subject. The word education, in its original signification, meant the draw ing out of a man what there was in him. In our common schools the practical work of education consists in putting into the brain a larger number of facts than can be retained, which are consequently more or less understood and digested. It ordinarily consists simply of teaching a round of abstractions or facts which when not assim ilated are not only useless to the individual, but generate careless habits of thought and make more or less untruthful, unfaithful or unsuccessful men. In most of our schools a procrustean system is adopted; all are made to advance upon one general plan, the quick being kept back and the slow dragged on at a rate too great for their power of comprehension. Until within a very few years it has been a theory in common school education that the brain alone should be developed, and that little or no attention need be paid to the train-
