In situ solution mining of uranium has environmental advantages over conventional mining. The leaching of uranium, however, alters the ground-water quality in the aquifer where the mining occurs. Currently, regulations require that the ground water be restored to approximately its original condition. This paper, a summary of a study funded by the Bureau of Mines, reviews the state of the art in restoring ground-water quality after in situ uranium leaching. Current restoration practices discussed include disposal of liquid wastes in deep disposal wells and evaporation ponds, producing from all wells during restoration, and recirculating water purified in surface plants. Methods for predicting the effectiveness and cost of current techniques are presented. Possible alternative techniques are also described. Two restoration operations are discussed.

THE constitution of the system silver-mercury has attracted the attention of many investigators during the last two decades, but since their results are for the most part in poor agreement, there is little need for a review of their individual contributions. It remained for the very careful thermal and microscopic investigation of Murphy' in 1931 to give the constitutional diagram in its present and unquestioned form, which is shown in Fig. 1. He devised methods for taking cooling curves on alloys under high pressures and for the microscopic observation of alloys which contained liquid mercury as a structural constituent at ordinary temperatures. The compositions of the intermediate phases were confirmed and supplemented through X-ray analyses by Preston2 and Stenbeck.3 According to Murphy, at 276° C. silver is able to dissolve 44 to 45 weight per cent of mercury, which may increase at lower temperatures to about 50 per cent. Preston concluded that the saturation boundary occurred at 46 ± 2 per cent at 100° C. From the values reported in the literature, these are the only ones that may be accepted as lying even in. the right region. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS The silver used in the present investigation was supplied by the United States Metals Refining Co. through the courtesy of the Committee on Industrial Uses of Silver and, since a complete spectrographic and chemical analysis was furnished, no attempt was made to purify it or to further establish the impurities present. The analyses reported by the company are shown in Table 1. Milligan4 has found that the magnesium content is probably less than 0.0005 per cent.

Of the treatment of the slime-pulp of gold- and silver-ores by cyanidation, agitation is an essential part. When prepared for treatment, this pulp, consisting of ore reduced to such fineness that approximately 80 per cent. of it will pass through a 200-mesh screen, is mixed with a certain proportion of water, carrying in solution the cluantity of cyanide (KCN) and other chemicals required. The water-constituent of the pulp thus prepared usually ranges from 1 to 2 parts by weight to 1 of the dry ore. Thus constituted, the pulp is charged into treatment-tanks, the shape and capacity of which vary, according to the quantity of pulp to be treated daily and the method of agitation to be employed. Tanks have no other function in a cyanide,plant than that of being economical and corlvellient containers or receptacles for holding the pulp, solutiou, or water used in the operations. It is by agitation that the solids in the pulp charged into the tanks are kept in suspension in, and mixed with, the solution in the proper proportions required for the treatment. If the proper mixture of solution to dolids be determined to be 2 to 1 by weight (which is, approximately, 5 to 1 by volume), this proportion should be maintained in every part of the charge; that is, each solid particle of the pulp, whether it be of' 180- or 400-mesh size, should be surrounded by five times its own volume of solution throughout the whole period of treatment. The reason is, that the amount of chemicals ascertaiued to be necessary for dissolving the gold and silver contained in the solids, is held in uniform solution in the water-constituent of the pulp, and, therefore, the determined proportions of solution and solids must be maintained at all times during treat-

This investigation describes the kinetics of alloying in a (Cb-15 wt pct W. 5 wt pct Mo, 1 wt pct Zr) powder-metallurgy alloy. The degree of homogeneity obtained in hydrostatic ally pressed and vacuum-sintered samples is described by composition distributions resulting from analysis of X-ray dvfraction line profiles. Sintering variables and degvee of powder dispersion were evaluated. The utility of single-value parameters obtained from composition distributions is disaissed. The spatial distribution of composition, as revealed by anodically tinted metallographic sarrzples, was used to provide diffision models based on a concentric-sphere geometry. Diffusion equations developed from these models were found to be in general agreement with experimental results. The powder-metallurgy method for the production of refractory metal alloys has the ability to produce an inherently fine-grained, fabricable structure. The more general use of this method is inhibited, in part, by the presumed difficulty in obtaining homogeneity on a microscale. The degree of homogeneity therefore is an important, but usually neglected, variable in specifying the quality of a powder-metallurgy alloy. Convenient techniques for measuring the degree of homogeneity are now available,' and have been used to develop a model describing the process of alloying in a simple binary mixture.' In this investigation, the process of alloy formation has been studied in a more complex system. PROCEDURE The columbium-based F-48 mixture was prepared from the constituent powders shown in Table I. The particle sizes tabulated were provided by the vendors of the individual powders. Standard laboratory techniques utilizing a jar mill were employed for blending. The blended powders were hydro-pressed into 1-in. diam rods which were then sliced into thin discs for vacuum sintering. All samples were given a preliminary treatment at 1700°C for 2 hr. Varying degrees of homogeneity were obtained using additional treatments at higher temperatures. The degree of homogeneity obtained by a specific sintering treatment was evaluated metallographi-cally using the anodic-tinting technique described by olff,' and quantitatively by the analysis of X-ray diffraction line profiles using the X-ray diffraction technique developed by udman.' The diffraction technique is strictly valid only for binary systems. However, the relatively small difference between the lattice parameters of tungsten and molvbdenum when compared with columbium permitted the treatment of the complex composition of F-48 as a (W, Mo)-Cb pseudobinary. Calculations were weighted in accord with the W-Mo ratio in the F-48 composition. The contribution of the 1 pct Zr was ignored since it could not even be detected in the blended powder. Two factors are required to convert an X-ray line profile into a composition distribution. The variation of these factors with composition is shown in Fig. 1. An error lzas been found in the conventional way of determining the time exponent of linear shrinkage for the solution-precipitation stage of liquid-phase sintering. Large amounts of shrinkage due to initial rearrangenzent result in erroneously low exponents and tni si dentification of the rate-controlling process. Two alternative, mathematically correct, methods of calculation are applied to existing data on Fe-Cu, WC-Co, and Tic-Ni-Mo. This results in reidentifi-cation of the rate-controlling process and somewhat better agreement with related data. In each case the solution-precipitation process is solution-controlled and not diffusion-controlled. THE liquid-phase sintering process has been the object of a considerable amount of research for many years. Linear shrinkage vs time data at various sintering temperatures have been used recently in an attempt to identify the prevailing mass-transport processes in a number of metallic and nonmetallic systems. There is an analytical error inherent in the methods previously used for handling data during the "solution-precipitation" stage of shrinkage which must be recognized before the correct rate-controlling processes can be determined. It is the purpose of this paper to show how the error has affected previous conclusions and to suggest corrections. A number of mechanisms have been proposed to explain experimental observations during sintering in the presence of a liquid phase. The earliest of these is due to Price, Smithells, and williamsl who attributed the observed growth of the solid phase to the simultaneous solution of smaller particles and growth of larger particles. From the work of Lenel et al.2,3 and Gurland and Norton4 has come the suggestion that the liquid-phase sintering process may be divided for analysis into three steps: 1) rearrangement upon formation of the liquid phase; 2) solution and reprecipitation of the solid phase in the liquid; and 3) "coalescence" or a final stage of sintering, characteristically slower than the solution-precipitation process. The sequence of steps is shown schematically in Fig. 1. Kingery5 presented a thermodynamic and kinetic analysis of the first two "stages" of the liquid-phase sintering process in which the functional dependence of lineal shrink- age on time at temperature was used to identify the rate-controlling mass-transport process. Table I summarizes the time dependences and processes considered by Kingery.5 This method of data presentation has been employed by Kingery and coworkers for Fe-CU,6 WC-Co, and a number of nonmetallic systems," and bv Whalen and Humenik for Tic-Ni-Mo and Fe-cu.8 In each of these studies, the rate-controlling step during the "solution-precipitation" stage was identified from the slope of the curve in that stage on a logarithmic plot such as Fig. 1. However, in all of the previous studies, at a certain composition, relatively large amounts of shrinkage due to rearrangement preceded the solution-precipitation stage. SLAG composition, slag constitution, reactions in slag, and reactions between slag and metal-in other words, the physical chemistry of slags-are matters of great importance to the open-hearth operator, whether or not he makes use of any detailed knowledge of them. Although this is a relatively young branch of the science of steel- making, much progress has been made; however, much remains to be learned, and many of the statements that can be made at present are probably--or even certainly-subject to future change. Nevertheless, the physical chemistry of slags is sufficiently developed to provide a reasonably secure basis for real understanding of steelmaking reactions. FUNDAMENTALS OF SLAG CONTROL By way of introduction, some time is spent in this chapter on effecting an easy transition from some of the more "practical" manifestations of slag to discussions couched in the more formal language of physical chemistry. This necessitates a certain amount of repetition, but it is felt that the purpose of the chapter is best served in this way. Reactions in the metal phase have products that find their way into the slag and are important components thereof; they are discussed in detail in the preceding chapter. Some substances distribute themselves Between slag and metal in definite fashion, and others are found only in the slag. Their reactions are a large reason for this chapter. Limitations of Slag Control. The open-hearth process is essentially oxidizing and cannot be otherwise operated. (Oxygen gradients in the furnace, the mechanism of oxygen inflow, and similar subjects are discussed in Chapter XIX.) As shown in the calculations of material and heat balances for the charge (see Chapter XV), from 25 to 50 lb. of oxygen will flow from air or combustion gases into the charge or molten bath during the heat for each ton of liquid steel

During recent years considerable interest has been focused on the energy-absorption characteristics of metal when it is cyclically stressed in vibration. The most familiar manifestation of this phenomenon, which is called the "damping capacity" or "internal friction" 06 a material, is involved in the dissipation of mechanical energy of vibration, which otherwise would build up to stress levels where the problems of noise and fatigue are involved. In addition to its engineering importance in structures, the damping behavior of metals, particularly at low stress amplitudes, has also been used as a unique metallurgical research tool with which to provide sensitive means for indicating certain structural changes within metals. Important contributions toward understanding the energy-dissipating -mecha-nisms that are responsible for internal friction in metals have been made in the last few years. The information is not yet sufficiently extensive, however, to provide a useful metallurgical concept describing exactly how the structure affects the internal friction, or to encourage more general use of this technique among metallurgists. Three fundamental mechanisms have been proposed, as a result of recent experi- mental investigations, to account for the internal friction in nonferrous metals in low-stress amplitude tests. These include damping due to internal thermal currents that are created and flow in metal because of differential vibratory stress effects,' damping due to localized inelastic stress relaxation at inhomogeneities within the meta1,2,3 and damping related to plastic flow of a localized type for which an explanation has been sought in terms of the dislocation theory.' How each of these mechanisms functions as a result of structural changes in the metal is, in general, not well understood because of insufficient experimental data for which the controlling variables ham been segregated and because of uncertainties in regard to the nature of the structural changes themselves. In several investigations the effects of cold-working on the internal friction of polycrystalline brass and aluminum have been described. As reported by Köster and Rosenthal,5 and by Förster and Breitfield,6 there is an initial large increase in the damping when the metal is worked. The initial high value is not stable, but declines rapidly, at first, in a hyperbolic manner. About Ioo hr. after straining, a stable value is reached of magnitude proportional to the amount of strain.' In Fig. I is shown the relationship found by Zener and his collaborators between the internal friction due to cold-working of alpha brass and the amount of cold-working.8 Several investigators have made internal-friction measurements on worked poly-

Movement on a fracture of irregular shape can cause local widening of the fissure and thereby offer freer channelways for circulation of ore-depositing solutions. This influence: coupled with large areas of wall rock available for reacting with ore solutions in brecciated and shattered ground can account for locally active deposition of metals and the resulting ore shoots. Such irregularities in the fracture system may be caused by local variations in the strength of rocks and by pre-existing lines of weakness, especially if these stand at favorable angles to certain components of the fracturing stress. Therefore correct interpretation of the mechanics of fracturing should permit deductions as to structurally favorable places on unexplored portions of the vein system. Introduction It has long been recognized that movement on a curved or irregular fault surface is capable of separating the walls in certain portions of the fault, but until very recent years the importance of this mechanism as a factor in localizing ore shoots has escaped proper recognition. A short time ago W. H. Newhouse' presented a careful analytical study of displacements and their corresponding open spaces. For reasons that will be discussed later, it frequently happens that portions of the vein which are favorably oriented are not merely wider but also richer than the average. In many cases the widening with its accompanying richness coincides with very minor changes in the dip or strike of the vein, irregularities that commonly escape notice unless the vein is mapped in detail and a careful geometrical analysis made. While the relationship between the width of the vein and the changes in dip or strike has been recognized as a matter of observation, the irregularities have been accepted as more or less the result of accident. There has been very little effort except in isolated cases to find out the causes of these changes in dip or strike. Yet it is clear that if the causes can be recognized and expressed in terms of geologic structure the geologist will know where to look for repetitions of these favorable conditions either on extensions of the same vein or on adjoining veins. Any lack of understanding of the causes is due to the limitations of our ability to interpret our observations and not to the sheer capriciousness of

THE introduction of the logarithmic sector method of quantitative spectrography by Scheibe and Neuhäusser in 1928, and the subsequent .modification and improvement of the method by Twyman and Simeon, would seem to have marked yet a further advance in quantitative spec-trum analysis and its industrial application, inasmuch as it offers a simple means of eliminating some of the uncertainties inherent in the older methods based upon mere visual comparison of line intensities. In their recent admirable review of the position and capabilities of industrial spectroscopy, Brownsdon and van Someren1 say: Ways and means of facilitating the comparison of line-intensities so as to give them numerical values are helpful, and of these a logarithmic sector rotating in front of the slit appears to he one of the most promising; . . . the success recently experienced by the author in using this method for the examination of steels and solutions of metallic salts prompted him ,to investigate its possible use in estimating the impurities commonly present in crude and refined tin. The results of this investigation are submitted in the present paper. Details of a number of spectrographic analyses of tin for various impurities have already been published. Thus, Schweitzer2 describes the spectrographic examination of tin for lead, bismuth and cadmium, and was able to distinguish between such atomic percentages as 0.01, 0.05, 0.10, 0.30, 0.60, 1.20, 3.00 and 10.00. Negresco3 investigated the bismuth content of tin over a range of from 0.0005 to 35 per cent. Meggers, Kiess and Stimson4 compare spectrographic and chemical analyses of tin metal for copper, lead, iron, zinc, silver, nickel and bismuth. They stress also the value of spectrum analysis in the examination of tin used for boiler plugs, where the requirements that only minute quantities of impurities shall be present render the chemical analysis both tedious and difficult.

The lattice reorientations in (1011) and (1013) twins of pure magnesium have been investigated using polarized light. Both forms (Ire subject 20 almost complete second-order twinning on the (1012) plane of the first-order twin. The observed deviations of composition planes by 6 and 3 deg, respectively, from coherent twinning planes are caused by second-order twinning. The experimental data indicate that (1011) and (1013) are reciprocal twins with a twinning shear 0.136. In a previous paper1 it was shown that the primary fracture mechanism in single crystals of magnesium strained in tension parallel to the basal plane is parting or fracture inside twins. In the temperature interval 25oto286oC, the observed twinning form, dominant in fracture, was a very small twin which formed in bands. Because these twins were very small and appeared in extensively deformed regions they did not lend themselves to X-ray analysis. Lacking Cou-ling and Pearsall&apos;s2 recently reported polarized light technique for magnesium, the twinning plane indices (K1) were originally determined by two surface composition plane measurements. This plane fell in a major zone (axis < 1120>) at an angle of 55.75 deg to the parent crystal basal plane. Because its habit deviated by 6 deg from{l0ll), 61.9 deg, the experimental data per se were not consistent with simple (1011) twinning and, for expedience, the twin was designated with habit plane indices (30341, 54.5 deg, representing the lowest set of indices corresponding to measured angles. Couling, Pashak, and sturkey3 have also found bands of reoriented lattice with a similar habit in polycrystalline specimens of magnesium and certain dilute magnesium alloys. These bands are significant because their formation in large numbers during plastic flow permit specific magnesium alloys to undergo very extensive deformation by cold rolling. Using polarized light2 they showed that the basal plane in the reoriented material was nearly parallel to the band habit and, as a result, proposed a mechanism for band formation involving a double twinning process in which (1011) twins form and then retwin according to (1012). Because of the obvious similarity between the twin bands observed in single crystals and in polycrystalline specimens, it was decided to investigate if the two phenomena were not identical and, if possible, to verify the retwinning hypothesis. The present paper is a report of this investigation and shows that the twins with the (3034) habit correspond closely to retwinned (l011) twins. Evi- dence is also given for an analogous retwinning process in (1013) twins. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Rectangular single-crystal specimen deformed in tension (stress axis in the basal plane parallel to [1010], as previously described,4 were polished electrolytically by Jacquet&apos;s method5 and etched in acetic picral.2 All twins studied in this investigation belong to a major zone, whose axis, [1210], was perpendicular to both stress axis and two sides of each specimen [(1210) surfaces]. These latter contain the plane of shear of the twins and measurements of the basal plane trace of twins on these surfaces determines the lattice orientations of the twins. The position of the basal plane in each case was determined with a polarizing microscope using a modification of the technique of Couling and Pearsall.2 For each twin the four positions of maximum extinction were measured, the data averaged, and then the pair of extinctions corresponding to the basal plane was determined by rotating the microscope stage and observing the position at which the color changed from orange to blue with a gypsum red, first-order plate inserted between the crossed Nicol prisms. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS (1013) Twins—In general, especially in speci-mens deformed at 150°C, (1073) twins appear in greater numbers and larger sizes than (1011) twins, and the lattice reorientation inside these twins is therefore easier to study and measure. Fig. 1 shows an area of an unetched and unpolished (1210) crystal surface containing a number of (1073) twins sloping upward to the right at about 29 deg with the basal plane of the original crystal (horizontal direction). Slip line segments may be seen in both the parent crystal (running horizontally) and in the twins (sloping downward to the right at approximately -22 deg with the horizontal). A method is developed for improving the low recovery efficiency which results when viscous oils are flooded by water. Viscous oil has been diluted with a lighter liquid miscible in it in any ratio which produces a mixture possessing a reduced viscosity and which is then displaced by water. Light gasoline was used in these tests to reduce the viscosity of the oil in place. Oils possessing viscosities in the range of 1.28 to 324 cp at the test temperature of 30C were displaced from a cylindrical unconsolidated sand core, with a length of 2 m (6.6 ft) and a diameter of 10 cm (3.9 in.) at a flood of 6.27 cc/sq cm/hr. In two test series up to I PV of light gasoline was injected into the core before water flooding. In the first series the recovery of a low-viscosity oil (1.28 cp) increased as the volume of light gasoline was increased. However, only the oil which could not be recovered by water flooding alone could be replaced by the light gasoline. In the other series, the recovery of a more viscous oil (13.5 cp) was not increased even if large quantities of light gasoline were injected. An oil bank built up ahead of the water front so that the flood water met with equivalent saturation conditions, as would be the case in flooding solely with water. However, the recovery of more viscous oils could be increased substantially when the core was first flooded with water, followed by a slug of light gasoline, and then flooded with water again. Furthermore, an oil bank ,built up ahead of the second water front. The formation of this oil bank is particularly favorable for the displacement process; the greater part of the light gasoline injected was pushed out of the core ahead of the oil and recovered. Using a light oil of low viscosity, it was possible to replace only the residual oil that could not be recovered by water flooding by the light gasoline. As the basic study had shown that highly viscous oils could be recovered by flooding first with water, then with light gasoline, followed by a second injection of water, the study was extended by tests made with reservoir fluids and cores taken from the low-gravity oil reservoir of the Wietze field, Germany. A great increase in recovery over flooding with water alone was obtained in these tests. The results may show a way to recover high-viscosity oils by a comparatively simple flooding procedure. INTRODUCTION In fields where oil recovery has not benefited from natural water drive, increased recovery may be obtained by the injection of water into the reservoir, especially in the case of fields which produce high-gravity, low-viscosity oil. There is a rather close relation between the viscosity of the reservoir fluid and the recovery that can be obtained by water flooding. As the viscosity increases the oil recovery decreases proportionately, so that an oil viscosity about 30 times that of water is generally considered to be the upper limit for an economically successful water flood.&apos; This limitation has been recognized theoretically by Buckley and Leverett,&apos; and has been verified by numerous laboratory flooding tests, such as by Croes and Schwarz,V n the viscosity ratio range of oil to water from 1 to 500. The reason for the inferior recovery of viscous oils by water flooding can best be understood by considering the mechanism of flood tests. In such tests water is introduced into one end of a sand-packed tube which is saturated with oil of the viscosity to be tested, and oil is produced from, the other end. Oil, with a viscosity lower than that of water, is pushed ahead of the advancing water with considerable uniformity, and irregularities in the displacement process tend to be eliminated as the oil saturation decreases and the water saturation increases. However, oil recovery is not complete, for the water forms interfaces with the oil and traps residual oil droplets in certain of the pore spaces. These residual oil droplets are distributed rather uniformly through the sand, and they are not susceptible to recovery regardless of the amount of water passed through the test cylinder. In the case of an oil possessing a viscosity greater than that of water, the injected water tends to move irregularly through the sand in the test cylinder. At the place in the sand where initial water movement takes place, resistance to the movement of water is lowered and the water finger so formed will grow perceptibly; it will extend to the outlet end of the test cylinder so that a breakthrough of water takes place long before much of the oil-saturated volume of the sand has come in contact with water. Once the breakthrough of water takes place, the water-oil ratio is gradually approaching the economic limit, even though much of the oil in the test cylinder remains unaffected by water. Disconnected drops of oil are trapped in the portion of the sand that has been invaded by water, just as when an oil of low viscosity is flooded. The poor recovery of the more viscous oils, therefore, is due to the irregularity of water movement through the test cylinder, and the rate of water movement through restricted sections of the oil-saturated sand increases with the more viscous oils. The kinetics of re crystallization and the effect of recovery on recrystallization of pure iron were investigated within the temperature range of 517" to 632 OC. Grain growth and activation energies were also studied. Two stages can be distinguished during recrystallization; the first is gvowth-controlled and the second is nucleation-controlled. The extent to which the first stage succeeds before the second stage begins depends on both temperature of recrystallization and temperature of recovery. The softening of cold-worked metals and alloys due to transformation of the deformed crystals to strain-free equiaxed grains during annealing is well-known, and early inestiators established that recrystallization kinetics is strongly influenced by minute quantities of impurities. Generally, it is believed that impurities decrease the rate of recrystallization and the rate of grain growth. To understand the basic phenomena of recrystallization, investigations should be on pure materials. Most of the research on high-purity materials has been on metals having the fee Bcc materials, and especially high-purity iron, have been studied only in recent years. It is known that recovery may influence recrystalliation;" however, no general description of the influence, applicable to all materials, has been presented. This paper presents results of a study of the recrystallization kinetics of high-purity iron, after 60 pct cold deformation by drawing, with particular reference to the influence of recovery on the rates of recrystallization and grain growth. From observations of these rates, conclusions are drawn concerning nucleation. MATERIAL AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Preparation of Material. High-purity iron, prepared by zone refining of vacuum-melted electroiytic iron at Battelle Memorial Institute under sponsorship of the American Iron and Steel Institute, was used in this study. Table I gives the reported chemical analysis of the material, taken at a point near the last molten zone and thereby rep- resenting the maximum impurity level for the entire bar. Prismatic specimens, approximately 10 x 10 X 50 mm, were sawed from the 50-mm-diam bar, perpendicular to the zone-refining direction, and turned to cylindrical shape. These specimens were sealed in quartz capsules under vacuum, approximately 10"e mm Hg, austenitized at 930° C for 15 min, slowly cooled, removed from the capsules, and cold-worked in air by swaging to approximately 20-pct reduction of area. The encapsulating, austenitizing, and swaging operations were repeated two additional times, after which the samples were encapsulated, austenitized, and cold-drawn to 60-pct reduction of area. A further vacuum anneal at 630°C for 120 min and cold drawing to 60-pct reduction of area produced wire 2.8 mm in diameter. The drawn wire was electropolished to remove deformed material on the surface, after which it was sawed into 4-mm-long specimens for the recrystallization study. Microscopical examination before the final cold reduction revealed equiaxed grain structure with very fine grains in a thin layer near the surfaces of the specimen and nearly uniform ASTM 3-4 grain size in the center. Recrystallization Heat Treatment. a) Direct Recrystallization of Cold-Worked The 60 pct cold drawn iron specimens were recrystallized at five temperatures, 517, 556, 590°, 612, and 632C, in a lead bath covered with graphite (the temperature was controlled to 1°C). Specimens were treated for twelve different times at each temperature, and all were water-quenched after heat &eatment. b) Recrystallization Following Preliminary Recovery Heat Treatment. After cold working, specimens were sealed into quartz capsules under vacuum, 105 mm Hg, and recovery-annealed at 362", 400", and 440°C for 20 hr prior to recrystallization. No evidence of recrystallization was found

A method has been developed for evaluating acid treatments in fractured limestone fields by breaking down pressure drawdown into three component parts: (I) pressure differcntial across "skin" near the borehole face, (2) pressure differential due to flow resistance in the coarse communicating fissures and (3) pressure differential between the fine voids and the coarse fissures. It is apparent that in most successful acid treatments the first term, skin resistance, has been reduced or eliminated. Further, it is often possible to estimate the volume of coarse fissures associated with the second term, coarse fissure flow resistance. In cases where this volume is comparable with practical acid volumes it seems likely that this resistance also may be attacked with a suitably retarded acid. INTROD UCTION Acid treatment has been successfully applied as a general practice in the limestone wells in the Mara/ Maracaibo districts of Venezuela for some 10 years. At the same time the need has been felt for a more precise method of: (1) evaluating the effect of an acid job and (2) selecting wells which should benefit from an acid treatment. The following method, based on an analysis of build-up curves for wells producing from fractured limestone, provides a means of forecasting the effect acid will have on a well and in many cases the probable order of production rate increase which may be expected. In certain cases it is also possible to calculate the fissure volume through which the acid has to be displaced for best results. Various approximations are introduced in the method, but within the limitations of these the analysis gives an indication of how a well, whether previously acidized or not, may be expected to respond to acid treatment. Suitable build-up curves cannot be obtained on "tight" wells which do not give sustained production and the method is not applicable to such wells. Figs. 1 through 7 illustrate various types of build-up curves obtained from limestone wells in Western Venezuela. Curves are included showing (1) both skin and coarse fissure resistance, (2) skin resistance only, (3 and 4) reduction of skin resistance by acidization, (5) fissure resistance only, (6) reduction of coarse fissure resistance by acidization, and (7) acidization failure. This theory has been successfully applied for over three years during which 22 acid treatments have been carried out specifically to reduce skin resistance and three treatments to reduce coarse fissure resistance. The method has been found to be a useful aid in the selection of wells for acidization.

U.S. Bureau of Mines efforts under longwall research programs to develop the capability to predict support requirements for longwall/ shortwall support systems are discussed. Ground control studies are being conducted in conjunction with several longwall/shortwall demonstration projects. Geologic, support performance, and strata behavior are being documented on these projects. A hypothesis is presented for the prediction of support requirements.

Discussion of the paper of A. N. MITINSKY, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1697 to 1705. LAWFORD H. FRY, Burnham, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*). -The author assumes that the proportional limit and the elastic limit are coincident or very nearly so, and then further assumes that the stress corresponding to these two points is the least stress which if repeated will cause failure. The point is extremely interesting and it is to be regretted that the author did not quote experimental data to show the relation between the limit of repeated stress and the other properties of the material. The author&apos;s suggestion that a steel of poor quality may have a normal value for the yield point and tensile strength (see Fig. 2) and an abnormally low elastic limit, and that this will correspond to a low resistance to repeated stress, may account for a number of failures of axles in which the tensile tests show normal physical properties. If so and if a determination of the proportional limit would have eliminated the material before it was put into service, this determination will merit most earnest attention. It appears, however, that considerable further research is necessary before any definite conclusion as to the quality of a steel can be drawn from its proportional limit. Mr. Mitinsky&apos;s paper is extremely interesting and if it stimulates thought and work along the lines indicated, it may prove of considerable practical benefit. H. V. WILLE, Philadelphia, Pa.-The paper discusses the difference between the proportional limit, or elastic limit, and the yield point, and refers to the fact that much harm results from confusion of the terms yield point and elastic limit. Teamwork: The famous first sentence of an essay en- titled Aphorisms, by Hippocrates, is as follows: "Life is short, the Art long, opportunity fleeting, experience treacherous, judgment difficult." The future of science does not depend so much on the number of scientists or the number of colleges, but rather on the individual qualities and the degree of perfection of a limited group of leading scientists and colleges. These are individual factors which require inherent talent which in turn is a condition evolved after generations of culture. Thus, very elaborate higher education for indiscriminate masses of humanity or students may not necessarily show the expected results. In other words, it is possible that higher specialized education should be given only to the few talented individuals, and their capacity and worth should be judged by as highly qualified and talented teachers. Quality is the greatest of all competitive aids. An essential qualification that must be possessed by a quality mineral industries college is a high caliber teaching staff, for the mineral sciences will advance in the coming years only if the leading minds of today are made avail- able as the mental springboards for our scientists of tomorrow. Mineral industries schools are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain a high caliber staff of instructors and administrators in competition with private business and governmental demands for similar

Meramec Mining Co. has put into operation a crushing and conveying system on its newly established 2475-ft level, 200 ft below the lowest production. To develop this level without interrupting hoisting or mine haulage, a 15.8% decline was driven from the 2275-ft level. A 5-cu-yd LHD diesel loader and a diesel-powered drilling jumbo were put into operation midway down the decline, and were used to develop the remainder of the decline and the entire level. Development of the ore pass system to the crusher required the construction of Swedish-type dumps on the main haulage-ways of all production levels with a minimum disruption of ore haulage. Concrete was handled by both rail-mounted and rubber-tired vehicles. The system features four Swedish-type dumps with control chutes at the lower three dumps, a 42-in. gyratory crusher with attendant feeders, and an 1800-ft long roof suspended conveyor feeding two 5000-ton ore bins. The crushed ore from these bins is conveyed to the lower of the mine&apos;s two original loading stations for hoisting. The retention of the original dumping and ore pass system as an alternate route has given mine production a unique flexibility. Operation for 22 months has permitted evaluation of the system from a long-term standpoint.

THE One Hundred and Twenty-sixth meeting-of the Institute, held in San Francisco, Sept. 25 to 29, 1922, was a success in every way. Character-istically, San Francisco presented climate suited, to the occasion, while the Committees on Arrangements left nothing undone that would contribute to the interest and entertainment of the members and their wives. There was a registration of over 230, and all sections, save three, were represented. In the technical meetings, under the leadership of Albert Burch in the mining session and C. W. Merrill in the milling session, the greatest interest was manifested in ore-hunting geology and modern ore-dressing methods. The general geologic phase developed numerous discussions and had for its aim the study and correlation of known data and the application-of these to the finding of commercial orebodies. The geologic features of the Comstock and their significance to the development of the present orebodies were discussed. This brought out matters of much technical interest as well as those of romantic nature in the history of the early life of that camp. The profitable application of modern milling methods to ores, non-commercial a short time ago, was discussed with much interest. The recent work on the Comstock ores occupied a conspicuous part in these discussions. Basic principles delineated by mathematical study of mechanical devices for the milling of ore came in for a prominent part in the program as well as the physical-chemical side of the processes devised for the winning of precious metals as a profit.
