FOR many years the disk-type and cloth-covered drum filters have found widest application in liquid-solids separation, which uses continuous filters. The disk type is less expensive, occupies less floor space per square foot of filtration area, and re- quires negligible down time for filter media changing. However, because filter cloth is billowed out by the blowback in the cake discharge, it is very short-lived if the scraper blades are set too close. Consequently cake weight is very important in assisting cake discharge, which normally necessitates a minimum cake thickness of 3/8 to ½ in. Also, the vertical position of the disks eliminates the possibility of efficient cake washing for removal of soluble values. The disk-type filter is generally limited, therefore, to applications that require no cake washing and form relatively thick cakes within the normal range of filter cycle times. The conventional cloth-covered drum filter is a more flexible unit, permitting wider variation in the percentage of cycle time devoted to cake formation, dewatering, or washing, as required by the application. Thinner filter cakes can be discharged be- cause a horizontal line across the filter medium at the location of the scraper blade is equidistant from the edge of the blade at all points. The scraper blade therefore may be set a short distance from the filter medium or, where wire winding is not used, a floating scraper can be utilized so that the contour of the cloth can be followed. The drum filter is generally employed when there are difficult filtering slurries with resultant thin cakes or when cake washing to recover soluble values must be practiced.

THE introduction of underground machinery in mines, and especially the invention of the rock drill, called attention to the necessity for some motive power to drive them. The use of steam generators underground is as a general thing inadmissible, owing to the, difficulties of ventilation and the transportation of fuel, and the great loss of power by condensation in the pipes, when surface generators are used, added to the inconvenience of getting rid of the exhaust steam, has precluded the direct use of steam for this class of machinery. Water as a power has with very few exceptions proved a failure, owing to its weight and incompressibility, and there-fore the attention of mining engineers has very naturally turned to the use of compressed air. This agent not only answers all the requirements for power, but has the double advantage of greatly assisting in thoroughly ventilating remote workings, and in cooling the underground atmosphere. It is therefore clear that the successful introduction of underground machinery is dependent on the economical production of good and efficient air-compressing machinery. Although many improvements have of late years been introduced in this class of machines, the most of them are open to serious objections, the chief of which are the very small duty they perform for the power expended, and their great expense, due to the complexity of their construction. This latter fault is the chief reason why the introduction of rock drills and other underground engines is so limited, as comparatively few mines can afford to expend the required capital for the installation of a complete compressing plant. But with the introduction of a cheap and effective compressor, there is no doubt that power drills will become as generally used in mines as the hand drills are now. The great excess of power required in most machines to compress air over that given out again by the use of the air thus compressed (amounting as it does in most cases to sixty per cent.) is well known to all mining engineers. Of course a portion of this loss is due to the friction of the air through the pipes, and will always occur however effective the machine used maybe, but the chief cause -of the

AT the meeting of the Western Division of the American Mining Congress, held in Denver last September, papers were read by F. H. Brownell, a vice-president of the American Smelting and Refining Co. and chairman of its finance committee, and by H. Foster Bain, former director of the United States Bureau of Mines and now secretary of the A. I. M. E.. which dealt thoroughly with certain phases of my sub-ject. These addresses can hardly have failed to awaken serious reflection in all who listened to them; but their implications have apparently not penetrated the con-sciousness of bankers, economists and statesmen, whose business it is, or should be, to prepare for the economic and social changes which must inevitably follow, if the conclusions which I shall outline hereinafter are true. In discussing this subject I wish to disclaim any intention or desire to forecast the course of the metal markets or the immediate prospects of the mining in-dustry. The facts' adduced must inevitably influence the value of metals, the activity and profitableness of mining, and perhaps also the social status of those en-gaged in it. But my forecasts do not refer to this year, next, year, or the year after. The nearest ap-proach to a date on which I will venture is that the relative scarcity of gold may begin to make itself felt in something like ten years from now, but its effect will not culminate for several years thereafter. Scarcity of new gold is likely to be offset, to some extent, by increasing use of currencies based on credit; but unless it is found possible to dispense with the gold standard altogether, this can hardly prevent a great ultimate fall in commodity prices. This fall, moreover, is likely to be more severe in manufactured goods than in what are, popularly termed raw ma-terials; and most of all in those manufactured goods which are susceptible to the greatest degree to cheapen-ing by mass production, and which are least counter-affected by increasing metal prices; by which I mean those in which the cost of metal contained forms a relatively small, element in the total cost of production.

In the past, the main emphasis in attacking the problem of the recovery of oil has been on the determination of fluid flow characteristics and residual oil saturation in the part of the reservoir which is contacted by a displacing phase. It is recognized that the determination of the fraction of the reservoir contacted in secondary recovery operations is also of great importance in predicting the ultimate recovery to be expected. A method is described in which radiographic techniques are used to determine these areal sweepout factors for any type of well spacing. Data showing the relationship of viscosity ratio and relative permeability to areal sweepout efficiency are presented for the five spot and the direct line drive well spacing patterns. Further applications of the method to studies of the displacement efficiency in the area contacted are mentioned. INTRODUCTION The problem of increasing oil recovery from typical reservoirs is generally attacked by trying to devise some means for reducing the residual oil in that part of the reservoir which is contacted. The fraction of the reservoir contacted in the displacement process. however, is also of major importance but has been given less consideration in the past. one reason for this neglect is the meager information available on the portion of the reservoir contacted and the magnitude of changes in this factor as operating conditions are varied. Until recently, the only means available for determining this quantity has involved the use of the electrolytic or poten-tiometric modelsl in which one is limited to working with a mobility ratio of unity. while means for calculating the volume of a reservoir contacted do exist. the calculations are very tedious for systems with mobility ratio different from unity. Recently several such determinations have been reported,213 and an experimental method involving a step-wise use of potentiometric models has been described.' A new method which has been developed for studying the areal distribution of phases in a porous medium is discussed below. This tool can be' used to determine the effect of operating variables such as viscosity, relative permeability, presence of gas, mobility ratio, rate and stratification on the fraction of the reservoir contacted by the displacing medium. This development based on the use of X-rays gives a pictorial representation of the location of the phases. Further, the amount of each phase at each point of interest can be determined quantitatively. X-RAY METHOD FOR AREAL STUDIES In this method the location of various phases distributed Over a test area are observed simultaneously by obtaining a photographic record of the transmission of X-rays through the test plate. This procedure is an adaptation of the radiographic techniques which have 10% been used in the medical and industrial fields. Just as the medical profession uses a chest plate to show spatial interrelationships, the location of an X-ray absorbing fluid and a nonabsorbing fluid in a porous medium can be determined by obtaining a photographic record of transmitted X-rays. Moreover, as changes occur in such a System, these changes can be observed by taking successive photographs. Previously, X-ray methods have been used in fluid flow studies to determine quantitatively the saturation at a given point in the system. The intensity of the transmitted X-rays was measured by an ionization chamber, so that a point by point survey of saturation could be made. A centennial meeting should be a time to take stock, to evaluate performance, to plan ahead. It is like a line in a televised commercial that goes, "You've come a long way to get where you've got to today." And no less should be said of the mining and energy industries. We have come a long way. A hundred years ago when AIME was founded, this country produced 23 million tons of bituminous coal and 5.2 million bbl of oil. The figures in 1970 were about 580 million tons of coal and 4.1 billion bbl of oil. In spite of such accomplishments, serious and compelling voices are heard in the land - doubting sincerity, questioning corporate structures, and challenging ethics. Those doubts are raised in one part of Washington at the same time that other sections of the Capitol are asking us to produce more energy in order to keep up with population growth, emerging nations, and new technologies. Those of us in the fuel or energy business frequently talk about the race for energy. The question is, can we develop enough energy fast enough to outdistance our present and increasing demands? Recently I heard of an incident that - in an odd way - caused me to think of the energy race. The incident involved a sky-diver who jumped from an airplane without a parachute. He was handed a chute in mid-air by a sky-diving companion. He put it on, opened it, and landed safely. In a way, it seems to me that our society is hurtling through space and that it needs some help from the energy industries to land safely. We're doing our best, but under some rather difficult conditions. Because of illegal strikes and work stoppages the coal parachute is snarled a bit. The cut in percentage depletion and other tax changes have put some holes in the oil parachute. And the gas ´'chute has been in trouble for some time because of unrealistic controls on producer prices. The irony of the situation is that some of the very people who have been taking potshots at the energy parachutes for a long time are the ones who are complaining loudest now because the 'chutes are not functioning the way they could. The safety of the entire nation can depend on the energy industries.

Why and how the nuclear industry entered the electric power generation business is discussed in terms that nuclear energy was an undoubtedly additional energy resource and that it had promise of becoming a virtually inexhaustible generating power if breeder reactors could be devised. The growth of nuclear power, its total generation capacity, are related to the need of increasing energy requirements. The use of atomic energy for power generation will grow if it can compete economically with other fuels. The rate of growth, the time scale and direction of technical development is dependent on ore supplies. It is predicted that by 1980, 50% of all new power installations will be nuclear stations. INTRODUCTION Ten years ago, the nuclear industry was virtually unborn, the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 had just been signed, and peaceful applications of atomic power was little more than a phrase. Serious discussion of the practical application of nuclear energy to electric utility installations in the West was highly unlikely. The questions: Why and how did the nuclear industry enter the electric power generation business at all?; What is the predicted growth of nuclear power?; What technological changes do we predict?; How will the above changes affect the utilities? will in part be answered by this paper. WHY NUCLEAR POWER? The only justification for the West as for any other section of the country for atomic power is economics. Whatever energy source will provide the lowest generation cost will prevail; the only electric utilities which have shown an interest in nuclear power are those to whom it means lower generation costs. It is true that the Government sponsored the development of this technology long before there was any evidence of better economics; but a Government must take a very long-range view and it is the only type of organization that can afford to look more than twenty or thirty years into the future. The Government looked at projections such as shown in Fig. 1, which shows various rates of energy consumption, and matched these against estimates of fossil fuel resources. This showed that we will exhaust our low-cost fossil fuel supplies within 75 to 100 years and our total known fuel supplies within 150 to 200 years. The decision to invest in nuclear energy rested, therefore, on two arguments: a) It was undoubtedly an additional energy resource; and b) It has promise of becoming a virtually inex-haustable resource if breeder reactors could be devised if, while generating power, the reactors would produce more fissile materials than they consumed. This decision produced an unexpected bonus: nuclear power became competitive with fossil power much earlier than had been expected and, as shown in Fig. 2, forced the coal industry to take a hard look at its own position. I believe that the drop of coal prices shown here is the direct result of the entry of nuclear power into the energy supply business. At this point, it ought to be explained why and under what conditions nuclear power can be cheaper than fossil power. Fossil fuel cost to the utility is composed of two factors: a) Mining; and b) Transportation. As a result, the cost of fossil fuel to the utilities varies from 126, 106 Btu to 306, 106 Btu and higher. Nuclear energy is highly concentrated and the transportation factor becomes insignificant. That an oil-land law is the most needed item in the proposed program of mineral-land legislation follows from the fact that Congress has never enacted a law really applicable to petroleum and natural gas. The action of Congress in 1897 in authorizing entry of oil lands under the placer law, enacted 27 years before for the mining of gold in surface gravels, was plainly only makeshift legislation. Naturally the provisions of this placer law with its requirement of discovery as a prerequisite to location are nothing less than absurd when applied to petroleum deposits hundreds or thousands of feet beneath the surface. Other reasons which render oil-land legislation an urgent necessity arise first from the large acreage of lands believed to be valuable for their deposits of oil and gas and therefore withdrawn by Executive order from all entry pending the enactment of . an appropriate law for their disposition—a withdrawal that has been specially ratified by Congress in the case of one State, Utah—and second from the exceptional importance of this resource to the nation, the large industrial worth of petroleum, and indeed its paramount value to the navy, not being suspected 17 years ago when Congress last legislated upon this subject. Mineral land of this type is also well adapted to serve for purposes of illustration in discussing the general principles that demand recognition in legislative reform. Most of the issues involved in the consideration of oil-land legislation are clean-cut, and essential differences of opinion will be seen to be based upon radical divergence in economic theory rather than upon conflicting views concerning unimportant details. For the last five years or more the geologists of the Federal Survey have discussed this subject and prepared memorandums and reports on the various bills introduced in Congress. Most of the provisions suggested in the present outline have been under consideration at one time or another during that period, and many of the statements which follow can be said to represent the consensus of opinion among those of us who, both in the field and in the office, have given special attention to the public oil lands.

MARSHAL Foch has been made an honorary member of the four national American societies of civil, mining and metallurgical, mechanical, and electrical engineers. The governing bodies of these societies, aggregating 45,000 members, conferred this signal honor in expression of the appreciation of American engineers for the unmatched services of this master of engineering principles. At Engineering Societies Building, in New York City, on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 13, the presidents of the four societies presented one beautifully engrossed certificate of honorary membership in the four societies. The auditorium was filled so that not even standing room was left, more than a half hour before the cere-monies began, and the main entrance on the street had to be closed. J. Vipond Davies, president of the United Engineering Society, made the opening address. Col. William Barclay-Parsons, 'who was commander of the first engineer regiment to go abroad, addressed Marshal Foch in French. Colonel Parsons said: The art of engineering was defined a long time ago as "the art of directing the great sources of power in nature for the use and convenience of man." No better definition can be found today. Of all the sources of power in nature, the greatest, the most valuable, and at the same time the most difficult to direct, is the energy of man himself. He who can direct human energy and turn it to the service of mankind is a great engineer. You, Marshal, have directed a greater mass of human energy than any other man has ever done. And you have successfully directed this mass for the highest uses of mankind, in that you by its aid have preserved for him one of the most precious of human possessions-liberty-liberty not only for your own illustrious country, but for all the nations of the world. The four national engineering societies, of the United States now desire to make record of their appreciation of this fact and to convey to you an expression of their most profound admiration for the great leader of men by conferring on you honorary member-ship in all the societies, the highest honor in their gift and one hitherto never conferred on a single individual. Four thousand members of these societies were enrolled in the armed service of the United States, the greater part of whom had the glorious distinction to serve the common cause in France under your orders. They heard the voice and they saw the hand of the master as he led them through battle to victory. Now we desire that you will still continue to lead us, but in peace, by permitting us to inscribe your name at the head of our roll of honor, where it will be, as your deeds have been, an example to us to do better work, and where it will remain forever a noble inspiration for all future generations. Marshal, in the name of those members of the societies who served under your orders and particularly .in the name of those who fell on the field of honor in France, I salute you.

INTRODUCTION The Salvador Division of Codelco Chile is an important copper molybdenum production center, located 1,200 km north of Santiago and 124 km east of the Pacific Ocean, in the foothills of the Andes Range. El Salvador Mine produces by block caving 8,600,000 t of ore with a content of 1 .l0% Cu and 0.02% Mo, from a copper porphyry ore body. The geology of the ore body shows a great heterogeneity as to rocks, grade distribution, ore height and undercutting levels. This has resulted in a variety of designs for the productive units (blocks) and in the mineral handling systems. Up to now, 4 systems have been employed: grizzly and intermediate haulage; slusher drifts with intermediate ore pass and haulage; slusher drifts with scraper loading directly into trains; and, LHD. On the other hand there is a marked dispersion in the final results from each block mined out. We report here the conclusions reached after analyzing the data gathered on the mining of 163 depleted blocks, representing a total production of 102,000,000 t, with an undercut area of 340,000 sq m. The final results of each block, characterized in terms of tonnage and fine cop- per recovery, were studied as a function of a number of design, geological, and operational parameters. BASIC CONCEPTS Indices of Efficiency In order to evaluate the final result of each block, or group of blocks, the following indices of efficiency were defined : Tonnage Recovery (TR) . It is the ratio between the ore tonnage extracted and the in situ tonnage estimate for each block or group of blocks. Grade efficiency (E) . It is the ratio between the Cu mill feed grade and the in situ Cu grade estimate for each block or group of blocks. Grade efficiency is numerically equal to the ratio between fine copper recovery (FR) and tonnage recovery (TR) . Figure 1 shows the final results for 163 mined out blocks, in terms of tonnage and fine copper recovery. Different grade efficiencies are also indicated. The marked dispersion in the final results of mined out blocks must be stressed since it greatly incides in mine planning. It must be kept in mind that an eventual concentration of low overall efficiency in the blocks during a given period (e.g., one year) will make it necessary to bring into production new blocks over the standard development schedule. It is worth noting that the final results in the 163 mined out blocks corresponding to a production of 102,000,000 t of ore with a mill feed grade of 1.445% were obtained from an ore estimate of 93,000,000 t and a grade of 1.671% Cu, which represents 110% tonnage recovery and 86% grade efficiency. Parameters Studied The following parameters are considered in this study: Geological Parameters. These parameters depend exclusively on the geological and geotechnical features of the ore body. IN SITU GRADE: The initial estimate of the block grade. Four copper grade categories were considered : (a) lower than 1.3% ; (b) 1.3 to 1.6%; (c) 1.6 to 2.0%; (d) higher than 2.0%. The overall initial in situ estimate of the ore body was 1.6% Cu. IN SITU TONNAGE: Initial tonnage estimate of the block. Four categories are considered: (a) below 500,000 t; (b) 500,000 to 1,000,000 t (c) 1,000,000 to 1,500,000 t; (d) over 1,500,000 t. CONTACTS SLOPE: Since up to 4 rock types can be found in a block, resulting in a corresponding number of contacts, a horizontal con- tact was defined as that which forms an angle of less than 45" with the horizontal and a vertical contact that which forms an angle of more than 45" with the horizontal. GRADE DISTRIBUTION: As in rock types, horizontal and vertical grades were defined. ORE HEIGHT: The distance measured between the undercut level and the top of ore. Four categories are considered: (a) less than 60 m; (b) 60 to 100 m; (c) 100 to 150 m; (d)over 150 m

EPPELSHEIMER, * Middletown, Ohio.-The housing of employees has so many and so varied aspects that in order to reach even an approximately correct solution it is necessary to have in mind a few fundamental principles; but it is not possible as yet to write these housing principles in the clear and correct form that is possible with many of our natural laws. Manifestly, the problem depends first on the kind of people it is necessary to house. What is suitable for the Southern unattached negro is not suitable for the married skilled American. The influx of colored labor has affected quite a number of what were satisfactorily housed communities. The second important factor is the relative proportion of the number of employees to the total employable population of the community in which the industry is located. The employer of a hundred men in. a large city has little responsibility in the matter of housing his employees. If he employs 75 per cent. of the employable population in a community of 27,000, as is the case of the company with which the writer is connected, it means a large responsibility. In the establishment of an entirely new plant in a more or less isolated place, the responsibility becomes greater. As engineers, we design and write the specifications for the machinery to accomplish a definite purpose, and proceed to house it, provide the necessary buildings with their accessories in the way of cranes, or heating systems, or sprinkling systems, as the case may be. There is no reason why the operating force should not be built up in very much the same way: design the organization, write its specifications so that the employment department can secure the proper men, and then house that organization with just as much thought and care as is given the plant. In the plant, the various machines will work along certain definite lines and accomplish certain results; but even if we start with the proper organization it takes considerable time to get that organization working together. One of the most important elements to this end is the proper housing of the organization. A man usually spends more time at home than at work. Proper surroundings and a comfortable, convenient house of good appearance exercise an influence that cannot be denied, and an employee situated in such surroundings is far more inclined to follow the policies of his employer and take an active part in furthering them

Forging under the hydraulic press, which was introduced by Haswell in the year 1861, at the machine shops of the Imperial State Railway Company of Austria, has since been greatly improved, so that at the present time there are very few parts of machines which cannot be produced in this way, and at no greater cost than iron castings. The process is now used at Vienna chiefly for such parts of locomotives as cross-heads, link-bars, axle-box frames, etc., especially where the form is intricate, and there are many angles and projections. These objects weigh from 50 to 150 lb. or more, and it is claimed for them that they are not only much cheaper than ordinary forgings, but are much more regular in form and stronger. The results which Mr. Haswell has attained, after years of patient experimenting, were well shown in the Austrian Department of the Vienna Exhibition by a collection of the pressed objects in iron and steel, just as they left the moulds, with some of them cut asunder longitudinally and the surfaces etched, so as to show the internal structure or direction of the grain. Through the courtesy of Mr. Haswell and his son I saw the hydraulic presses in full operation at the works, drawing down large Bessemer ingots, cutting them up into blocks of convenient size, and forming various park of locomotives. They have two large hydraulic presses in use; the largest, with a piston 24 inches diameter, gives 1200 tons pressure, and the second, with an 18-inch piston, gives 600 tons pressure. The pressure in the pumps is 600 atmospheres. The action is vertical; the piston descends upon the work, and for forging ingots is armed with a hammer-like head. An ingot of No. 7 soft Bessemer steel, which was forged in my presence, weighed 2030 lbs. One end being placed upon the anvil, the piston is brought slowly down and crowded into the mass as if it were putty or dough, forcing it each way, but chiefly in the direction of the length of the ingot, this being the narrowest section of the anvil and hammer. The piston is then raised and the ingot is moved forward for a second squeeze, and so on, until the first half of the ingot has been reduced in thickness, when it is turned on edge and the operation is repeated. The relationship between areas of iron powders, briquettes, and sintered compacts and tensile strength has been determined. It has been found necessary to distinguish between two types of areas which exist in such powders—a macroscopic area due to the shape and size of particles and a microscopic area due to pores and cracks in the surface. Only the macroscopic area, specifically the area due to particle irregularity, contributes to tensile strength; the microscopic area cannot be forced into contact with adjacent particles ond does not participate in bond formation. Of the two methods of area measurement employed in this study—permeability to liquids and gas-phase adsorption—only the former is useful for determining the roughness factor. A measure of this roughness, (area measured by permeability to liquid) -f- (orea of powder with the same size distribution, but made up of spherical particles), is shown to be uniquely related to tensile strength at constant density. The other important factors in determining the strength of sintered-metal compacts are the density and presence or absence of surface oxide. THE manufacture of metal parts by the process of powder metallurgy is an important and rapidly growing industry. Progress has been rapid and continuous, largely because of the excellent research in the field. Nevertheless, the process remains inherently complex and empirical. Several investigators have shown that the properties of the final compact must depend on many variables; namely, shape,' size distribution,"-" nd compositiona of the original particles, the pressure necessary to compress to the desired density, the density of the compact, the time and temperature of sintering, and so on. Through the application of some new techniques to the study of powders and compacts, and the correlation of a number of observations of known variables, the present paper attempts to clarify and simplify the underlying theory of the powder-metallurgy process. Any theory must start with the obvious fact that the strength of a compact, its most useful property, is due to the formation of welded areas between adjacent particles, and attempt to deduce what effect other variables will have on (a) the area and (b) the intrinsic strength of these welds. Such welded areas can be demonstrated by electron micrographs, as in Fig. 1. It was believed that (a) could be most directly studied by means of surface-area measurements on the original powders and on the compacts made from them; the area decrease should be related closely to the welded area. A representative group of eleven iron powders from commercial sources, and made by a variety of processes, was chosen for this study. In addition to the surface-area measurements, correlations were established between the tensile strength and all the known variables which might possibly affect it. The results are quite unexpected. They indicate that the situation is much simpler than the authors had anticipated. The strength of the sintered compact is determined, indeed, by no more than three variables; viz., the irregularity of the original particles, the density of the compact and, in exceptional cases, the amount of surface oxide. All three had been recognized previously as having some effect on the tensile strength, but in the absence of the special techniques and interpretations to be developed here, there could be no suspicion that they were the only relevant variables. Materials and Methods Material—All the iron powders were commercial products obtained from the Amplex Division of Chrysler Corporation. Powders A, B, C, and J were very pure electrolytic iron. Powder D was made from oxidized scrap reduced by heating with an excess of cast iron. Powder E was a high-grade iron ore reduced by hydrogen. Powder I was prepared by atomizing molten cast iron in an air blast, quenching the droplets in cold water, and crushing the coarse powder. those who are to lie in the torn fields of France. Today we read of Lieut. William Hague, whom we said good-by to hardly more than a month ago-—so clean, ao young, so strong—who, abandoning the professional career in which he had won such commendation and which held for him such promise, leaving his wife and his little boy to whom he was so dear, answered at once the call for men of his training, and is now dead "in the service of his country." There are many friends of that courtly and dignified gentleman James D. Hague who recall, both here and in Stockbridge, the parental pride in the promising lad of such a little time ago—the eager schoolboy at Milton, the rather grave youth at Harvard, his entry into new experiences in the Western mining world, and who, seeing him during his stay at Camp Upton, realized that the old Puritan stock was still sound and true—and now with him the struggle is over and the sacrifice made. Captain William Teasdale Hall Captain Hall, who was admitted to Junior Membership in the Institute in 1915, while still a student of mining at the University of Toronto, was killed in action in France on May 19, 1917. Captain Hall was born in Toronto in 1893, and received his academic training at Harbord College, from 1908 to 1911, when he entered the University of Toronto, School of Practical Science. During the three summer vacations of his university course, he was employed by the O'Brien mine at Gowganda, next by the McIntyre Mining Co., at Porcupine, and finally by the Mines Branch of the Geological Survey, which was conducting magnetic surveys to the north of Port Arthur. When war was first declared, Mr. Hall endeavored to join the artillery as an officer, and for the purpose secured a provisional lieutenancy with a Hamilton battery, but he did not receive an overseas appointment, and on being graduated as a mining engineer in 1915, he was offered a position in Chile, which he accepted. He left Toronto on May 27, 1915, and was engaged in Chile as a mining engineer for nearly a year. In the latter part of April, 1916, he decided to offer himself again for service at the front. He crossed the Andes and sailed for LiverpooI, where he landed on May 13, 1916. On May 27, 1916, Captain Hall was given a commission as a lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps, 21st Squadron. He went to the front on Sept. 1, 1916, and remained there continuously. His

One of the heaviest burdens uselessly cast by our mineral land laws upon the holder of the title conveyed by a patent from the United States is due to the provision excepting known veins from land patented as placer. In many instances the expense of defending such titles from the assaults of the owners of lode locations made upon the theory that the veins so located were known to exist at the date of the placer application for patent has exceeded many times the value of the land in question. Neither the lapse of time, however long after the issuance of the patent. nor repeated adjudications by the courts serve to quiet such titles Or to prevent them from being questioned. In the passage of laws providing for the acquisition of title to the mineral lands of the United States, Congress provided that the title to known veins should not pass from the United States by a patent based upon a placer location. As construed by the courts, the law (Sec. 2333 R.S.U.S.) provides that the applicant for a patent upon a placer claim may, if any vein of sufficient value to justify the expenditure of money in its development is known by him to exist within the boundaries thereof, include in his patent application an application for patent upon the vein as a lode claim; and failure to do so is to be deemed a conclusive declaration that the applicant makes no claim to the vein nor to an area of surface ground extending for 25 ft. (7.6 m.) on each side of its middle or center. As to such vein and such area of enclosing surface ground under the circumstances stated, the title remains in the United States notwithstanding the issuance of a patent that purports to convey the entire surface of a described area and everything beneath it, excepting only the segments of veins the apices of which lie outside of such area. Such known veins with such area of enclosing surface ground are, of course, at any time, so long as they remain unlocated, subject to location and appropriation in the same manner as other. veins upon the public domain. The history of the operation of this law in one district will serve to illustrate its effect generally throughout the mining regions of the United States. The substance of this paper, now amended and altered in form for its present use, was the basis of a private report prepared under professional engagement.* A private report is necessarily objective, and deprived of the scope and technicality of a scieintific treatise—which accounts for the prevalence of drawings and succinct mathematical statements rather than full descriptive details in a paper reproduced from data, of which all the original working-notes have been destroyed. In a practical sense the Hudson river valley clay-deposits owe their present existence to the protection afforded by the rock-formations on which they are supported, and, instead of being uniform in depth or continuity, are subject to the irregularities of the rugged masses which preceded and are now concealed by them. The only available information concerning these deposits contained in previous public reports or maps furnished at best a mere photograph of the surface, and as now apparent this was misleading or unreliable. It was the object of this investigation to determine in a practical manner the location, form and extent of all the clay-deposits at present existing in the lower Hudson river valley, and to ascertain with a

The effect of neutron bombardment upon the stability of type 347 austenitic stainless steel has been investigated by a magnetic technique. The relation of the ferrite content of a stainless steel to its magnetic properties is given, and an apparatus suitable for the measurement of the ferromagnetic saturation induction of small specimens is described. Results of measurements on irradiated specimens are tabulated. Exposure to a neutron flux was found to cause a slight increase in the ferrite content of type 347 stainless steel, the change increasing with increasing length of exposure and with increasing initial ferrite content. The similarity of the effect of irradiation to the effect of annealing is pointed out. Possible effect of irradiation upon density of austenitic stainless steel is discussed. COMMERCIAL austenitic stainless steels are alloys of iron, chromium, and nickel, plus small quantities of other elements. Although these alloys are normally used in the austenitic condition, this state is thermodynamically metastable at ordinary temperatures and transformation to a more stable state takes place under favorable conditions. In the austenitic state, these stainless steels have the face-centered-cubic crystal structure characteristic of y iron, but the stable state at room temperature is a mixture of austenite and body-centered-cubic ferrite. The transformation from the pure austenitic condition may be brought about by cold working the alloy at a temperature below that at which the aus- tenite becomes thermodynamically unstable (about 400°C), the completeness of transformation increasing with increasing severity of cold work and decreasing temperature. The behavior of the austenitic stainless steels under ordinary conditions of use is rather well known. However, use of these alloys in a nuclear reactor introduces a new variable: the effect of neutron bombardment upon the transformation from the austenitic to the ferritic state. It was with this in mind that a study of the radiation stability of austenitic type 347 stainless steel was undertaken. Magnetic Technique for Ferrite Determination Commercial austenitic stainless steels such as type 347 undergo little transformation under normal conditions of fabrication and use. In view of this fact, it seemed likely that neutron irradiation would change the ferrite content of the alloy but little. The method chosen for measurement of the effect of neutron irradiation was thus limited to one which would be quite sensitive to small changes in the ferrite content of the alloy. Of the properties of the stainless steel which can be measured, the magnetic characteristics are most sensitive to the quantity of ferrite present.

This paper presents data obtained using a flood-pot technique to determine the fuel available and the corresponding theoretical air requirements for in situ combustion of crude oils. Since the technique is relatively quick and easy, it is a practical and convenient tool for evaluating reservoirs as fireflood prospects. It is also a research tool which facilitates systematic study of the variables affecting fuel availability and corresponding air requirements. The understanding of these variables is of prime importance to those concerned with the technical and economic development of in situ combustion as an oil-recovery process. The experimental results show conclusively that the fuel available for in situ combustion is not a constant but, rather, varies with crude-oil characteristics, porous-medium type, oil saturation, air flux and time-temperature relationships. Thus, the fuel availability for specified field applications should be determined using actual reservoir crude and core material and the process conditions expected during in situ combustion in the reservoir. INTRODUCTION In situ combustion is a thermal process for recovering crude oil from reservoirs. The thermal energy released during the combustion of a small amount of the oil in place aids in the displacement of the remaining oil. Numerous articles have been published describing the in situ combustion process giving detailed results of laboratory and field experiments.10 In order to engineer an in situ combustion project, a number of important factors must be considered and determined. These factors include: (1) the amount of fuel consumed per unit of reservoir volume swept by the combustion zone, (2) the composition of the fuel consumed, (3) the amount of air required to consume this fuel, (4) the portion of the reservoir swept by the combustion zone, (5) the appropriate air-injection rates and pressures, (6) the amount of oil that will be recovered, (7) the rate of oil production and (8) the operating costs. Nelson and McNiell1 recently have described a procedure which utilizes laboratory combustion-tube data as a basis for the calculation of some of these design factors. Various authors have attempted to describe the in situ combustion process mathematically, and considerable progress has been made. Analytical solutions to the problem of heat transfer from a moving combustion front have been obtained for linear and radial systems."-' All of the published results involve the assumptions that: (1) fuel concentration is constant throughout the reservoir, or that fuel concentration is inversely proportional to the velocity of the front for a given rate of oxygen consumption; and (2) the fuel reacts instantaneously with injected oxygen, while liberating a constant amount of heat per unit weight of fuel at all temperatures. It seems both desirable and reasonable to test the validity of these assumptions experimentally. This paper presents laboratory data which were obtained by means of a "fire flood-pot" method for determining fuel availability and composition, and the corresponding theoretical air requirements for in situ combustion of crude oils under variable conditions. The mechanics of the method are similar to a conventional tube-run experiment.' The important differences involve the size of the reservoir model used and the method for providing the experimental environment. The new method subjects conventionally-sized core samples or unconsolidated sands to a programmed environmental sequence similar to that experienced by a similar volume of rock during the approach and passage of a combustion front in a long tube or in an oil reservoir undergoing in situ combustion. Restored-state samples can also be used. The small samples and relatively simple techniques involved allow an experiment to be set up, run and calculated in about three 8-hour days. This is a considerable improvement over long-combustion-tube techniques which can require several days to run and several more work days to set up and calculate. All the runs presented were run at 40-psig injection pressure. An apparatus and a procedure for determining the viscosity behavior of hydrocarbons at pressures up to 10,000 psia and temperatures between 77 and 400° F are described. The equipment is suitable for measuring viscosity of either the liquid or vapor phases or the fluid above the two-phase envelope for systems exhihiting retrograde phenomena, according no the phase state of the system within these ranges of temperature and pressure. Equations are developed for calculation of viscosity from the experimental measurements, and new data for the viscosities of ethane and propane at 77° F are reported. INTRODUCTION With the advent of higher pressures and temperatures in industrial processes and deep petroleum and natural gas reservoirs, demand has increased for accurate values of physical properties of hydrocarbons under these conditions. Proportionately, more frequent occurrence of natural gas and condensate-type fluids is encountered as fluid hydrocarbons are discovered at greater depths. This increases the importance, to the reservoir engineer, of being able to predict accurately the physical properties of light hydrocarbon systems in the dense-gas and light-liquid phase states. Reliable gas viscosity data are limited primarily to measurements made on pure components near ambient temperature and at low pressures. Few investigations have been reported for high pressures, and except for methane, data on light hydrocarbons are subject to question. This is demonstrated by the large discrepancy between sets of data on the same component reported by different investigators. For mixtures in the dense gas and light liquid regions and for fluids exhibiting retrograde behavior there are very few published experimental data. Viscosity data for methane have been reported by Bicher and Katz,1 Sage and Lacey,12 Comings, et al,3 Golubev,3 and Carr,3 with good agreement among the last three sets of data. Comings, Golubev and Carr utilized capillary tube instruments for which the theory of fluid flow is well established. The theory permits calculation of the viscosity directly from the experi- mental data and dimensions of the instrument alone. Sage and Lacey, and Bicher and Katz used rolling-ball viscometers. The theory of the rolling-ball viscometer has not been completely established, and these instruments presently require calibration by use of fluids of known viscosity behavior before viscosities of test fluids can be measured. To obtain accurate data it is necessary that the rolling-ball viscometers be calibrated by use of fluids of density and viscosity similar to the test fluids, a difficult selection for the gas phase. From the methane data and experimental tests on various natural gases, Carr developed a correlation for predicting the PVT behavior of light natural gases.2,3,4 This correlation was based on data for a very limited composition range; its application to rich gases and condensate fluids is questionable. The object of this investigation is to develop an instrument which can be used to obtain viscosity data at reservoir temperatures and pressures, for rich gases, condensate-type systems above the two-phase envelope and light liquid mixtures. These data will be used in an effort to develop correlations to represent the viscosity behavior of these fluids. APPARATUS In a previous viscosity study Carr2 utilized a modified Rankine capillary viscometer configuration," Fig. 1. In this instrument the gas to be tested is forced through the capillary tube in laminar flow by motion of a mercury pellet in the fall tube, the measured displacement time being that required for the mercury slug to move between the brass timer rings. The viscometer is constructed of glass and mounted in a steel pressure vessel. The test gas pressure in the viscometer is balanced by an inert gas (usually nitrogen) in the vessel. Excellent results have been obtained with instruments of this type, with Carr2 and Comings5 reporting repro-ducibilities of 99.5 to 99.3 per cent and an estimated absolute accuracy of 99 per cent. However, these instruments have limitations which have precluded their use for liquids. The need for maintaining a balance between pressures of the test fluid and inert gas in the viscometer vessel presents operating problems, and requires charging the test fluid to the viscometer very slowly. The principle drawback to the Rankine unit is behavior of the mercury slug which provides the pressure differential across the capillary. BETTER understanding of solid surfaces and their associated adsorption products is of both academic and practical value. The study of detergents and their behavior in cleaning surfaces is fundamentally related to the nature of the products adsorbed and their ability to compete for certain surfaces. Similarly in flotation, the nature of the adsorbate before and after adsorption is basic to clear understanding of the process. The recently developed pellet technique1,2 employing infrared spectroscopy provides a powerful tool for the study of solid surfaces. Absorption bands, which are infrared-active, may be observed for adsorbed products. Also any changes in the surface substrate that occur as a result of adsorption may be detected by means of differential spectra. In applying the pellet technique to solids of large surface area, French and his coworkers3 have surveyed the adsorption of organic flocculants on clay minerals, oleic acid on fluorite, and ammonia on cracking catalysts. Recent work on application of differential infrared spectroscopy to the study of solid surfaces' has demonstrated that the difference between a sample and a reference can be obtained with double-beam instrumentation. In this way displacement of surface products, adsorption of new products, and differences in the substrate, if any, may be detected. Experimental Procedure: Potassium iodide pellets were used in this study, prepared from recrystallized analytical reagent grade KI. Grinding was carried out in a Fisher mechanical agate mortar. Two-gram plates containing the solid under study were pressed in a special evacuated die constructed in the laboratory at the University of Utah." Concentration depended on the solid in question. Zinc sulfide and willemite are sufficiently transpar- ent in the infrared region for concentrations as high as 20 mg of mineral in 2g of KI to be used. Zinc oxide is even more transparent, permitting concentrations as high as 60 mg in a 2-g plate. For non-differential operation, however, much lower concentrations (2 to 10mg/2g KI) had to be used. Spectra were obtained on a Per kin-Elmer 21 double-beam recording infrared spectrophotometer. A sodium chloride prism was used giving a spectral range of approximately 2 to 15 v wave length. For differential runs a resolution of 1000 was used and the scanning speed was controlled commensurate with instrument response. The response was checked continuously and each spectrum was repeated several times. For nondifferential runs a resolution of 927 was used. Zinc oxide used was analytical grade oxide fume. The zinc sulfide was precipitated from solution with analytical grade zinc sulfate and sodium sulfide. The precipitate was washed and centrifuged several times and dried. Before use the precipitate was washed in dilute HCl and then treated with saturated NH4Cl to remove any bulk oxides and sulfates. X-ray patterns of the precipitate were comparable to that of the natural mineral sphalerite. In the preparation of this paper the writer has drawn freely upon the writings of Orton, Munn, Shaw, Mather, Miller, Hoeing, St. Clair, Jillson, and others, as well as upon his own personal knowledge of the fields of both states. It is to be regretted that certain data gathered by him and his assistants last fall are not available for publication. Oil in Tennessee A few wells drilled for brine for salt making in Tennessee between 1820 and 1840 obtained oil, but no definite search was made for oil until just after the close of the Civil War. Active drilling was then begun in Overton and counties southwest of it on the eastern half of the Highland Rim. A number of strikes were made at shallow depths in the basal part of the Mississippian but the wells were soon exhausted and abandoned. Drilling was revived, about 1892, when the Spurrier district in Pickett County was developed and was followed by the Riverton district in the same county in 1896. A pipe line was laid from the Wayne County, Ky., fields and about 60,000 bbl. of oil were run before a very heavy slump in the production, a failure to find an extension of the field, and excessive local taxation caused the removal of the pipe line in 1906. There was then no production in Tennessee until the discovery, in 1915, of oil near Oneida, Scott Co., at about 950 ft. (289 m.) in fissures in the Newman or St. Louis limestone. This field, however, soon failed and was abandoned. In 1916, oil was found at Glen Mary, Scott Co., in the Newman limestone at a depth of 1232 ft. (375 m.) A number of wells have since been drilled there, some of which were dry while others, close by, were produccrs. The largest one yielded, at first, about 340 bbl. per day and produced for several months, when it suddenly went dry. Several of the first wells began at 6 or 8 bbl. per day and are still maintaining that output. Production is from a fissured part of the limestone and varies greatly in accordance with the size and extent of the ramification of the
