Any laboratory corrosion test, as judged from the practical point of view, is valuable only to the extent that it foretells what will, in all probability, occur in service. Such a test is most properly to be considered as a "pilot test," that is, a test which indicates the direction along which action may be expected to occur rather than as a truly quantitative test which would be expected to tell just how and to what extent the action would proceed. It is generally recognized that laboratory corrosion tests should be chosen with particular reference to the character of service expected for any particular type of metal, so far as it can be foreseen. Even when this requirement has been fulfilled, however, the question whether the actual service behavior of the material is in accordance and general agreement with predictions based upon such laboratory tests is always a pertinent one. The information available in the technical literature bearing on the correlation between the service behavior of metals from the corrosion standpoint, and the results obtained with the same metals in laboratory corrosion tests is very meager, indeed. The results which have been obtained in weather-exposure tests of sheet duralumin which form the body of this discussion are presented here for their bearing on this particular phase of the problem of the corrosion resistance of duralumin. Although the exposure tests described have not been completed, in the sense that all of the tests, in the series initially laid down, have been accomplished, still the general trend shown by the results is so clear that a number of definite conclusions at this stage (subject, of course, to possible modification in the light of later results) are believed to be warranted. The tests reported upon here form one phase of the much broader study of this subject which has been under way for several years in which the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the Bureau of Aeronautics of the Navy Department, the Army Air Corps and the Bureau of Standards have cooperated. AN incomplete phase diagram for the U-Ti systern was determined earlier 1 and more recently, a tentative diagram was presented for the uranium-rich end of the system.' In the present re-examination of the whole system of U-Ti alloys, high purity materials were used. Melting stock for the alloys was high purity uranium, containing about 0.09 pct C as the only appreciable impurity, and high purity iodide-process titanium purchased from New Jersey Zinc Co. Both metals were cold rolled to about 1/6 in. thickness, sheared to about I/' in. squares, and cleaned by pickling. The alloys were arc melted under a helium atmosphere in a water-cooled copper crucible. A thoriated-tungsten electrode was used. The furnace chamber was evacuated, then flushed with helium, prior to each melting. It was finally filled with stagnant helium at one atmosphere pressure. Each alloy was remelted three times after the original melting, to insure homogeneity. The alloy button was turned bottom side up before each re-melting operation. Some 22 alloys were examined. Their compositions were spaced at appropriate intervals between 100 pct Ti and 100 pct U. Analyses were made on chips taken after fabrication. The major contaminant was carbon, which varied from 0.03 to 0.08 pct. It appeared in the microstructure as titanium carbide. Alloy compositions were calculated to a carbon-free basis for consideration on the diagram. Tungsten and copper, possible contaminants from the melting operation, were generally less than 100 parts per million each. Fabrication All alloys were forged and rolled to bars approximately V8 in. square. They were clad either in SAE 1020 steel or in a 5 pct Cr-3 pct Al-Ti-base alloy, depending on the fabrication temperature. A temperature of 1800°F (980°C) was used for alloys near the compound composition. This necessitated using the titanium-base alloy, since iron reacts with titanium at this temperature, producing a low melting alloy. Other alloys were fabricated at 1450°F (790°C), using steel jackets. No iron-titanium reaction occurred at this temperature. The jackets were welded in place in an argon atmosphere. Those alloys sheathed in steel were declad and then reclad between rolling and forging operations. On the other hand, those clad with the titanium alloy were cut to a roughly rectangular shape prior to clading and were then carried through both the forging and rolling operations without opening. Those alloys near the compound composition were found to be cracked when the clading was removed. The cracked materials had been plastically deformed, however, and at least some of the cracking had OCcurred during cooling. Heat Treatment The rolled bars, after being declad and shaped to remove surface contamination, were all given an homogenizing treatment of 160 hr at 2000°F. (Samples were taken for analysis following the declading and shaping operations.) All were heat treated at the same time in one furnace, but each was sealed in a purified argon atmosphere in an individual Vycor glass tube. Argon pressure was such that it was approximately atmospheric at temperature. One end of each tube contained titanium chips and this end was heated to 1200°F (650°C) for 10 min prior to the heat treatment. This purged the atmosphere of residual reactive gases. The balance of the tube was warmed during the purge to liberate adsorbed moisture and gases, which also reacted with the hot chips. The bars were furnace cooled from the homogenization treatment. Specimens of each alloy were water quenched after 2 hr heating at 1000°, 1200°, 1400°, 1600°, 1800°, and 2000°F (540°, 650°, 760°, 870°, 980°, and 1095°C). In addition, some were treated at intermediate temperatures of 1300°, 1500°, and 1700°F (705", 815", and 925°C) and at 2150°F (1175°C). Specimens, about '/s in. cubes, were cut from the bars, sealed in individual Vycor tubes, and heat treated as described. All specimens heat treated at the same temperature were processed together. Samples were quenched by breaking the Vycor tube rapidly under water. Metallographic Examination Specimens were mounted in bakelite and ground wet on 180 grit paper held on a 1750 rpm disk. They were then ground wet by hand, using 240, 400, and 600 grit papers. The rough grinding was continued long enough to get well below the surface. Specimens were mounted separately because of the variation in the rate of etching between alloys. The specimens were polished with rouge on a 4 in., 1725 rpm wheel covered with Miracloth. Alloys on the titanium side of the compound composition were etched with a solution of 2 pct hydrofluoric acid in water saturated with oxalic acid. A few crystals of ferric nitrate were added as a bright -ener. Specimens were immersed 5 sec, polished to remove the etch, then re-etched. With the higher titanium alloys, it was often necessary to start the etch on the polishing wheel, because of the formation of a passive film. In some instances, a plain 2 pct hydrofluoric etch was satisfactory. For the alloys on the uranium side of the compound, a distinction between the compound and the uranium phase developed after standing a short time in air. This could be hastened by the application of heat, such as obtained by placing the specimen on a radiator. A deep etch was necessary to develop details in the uranium-rich phase, such as the Widmanstaetten pattern sometimes obtained by quenching y uranium. A 2 pct hydrofluoric acid solution was used for this deep etching.

Several transition metal nitrides have been prepared and their saturation magnetization determined. On the basis of an atomic model of ferromagnetism involving a consideration of nearest neighbor interactions and the assumption that all atomic moments of the metal point in the same direction, it appears that the nitrogen interacts with d-shell of the transition metal in such a way as to reduce the magnetic moment. THERE is a large class of materials having metallic properties which are formed by a combination of hydrogen, boron, carbon, oxygen, or nitrogen with the transition metals. Several attempts have been made to establish the type of metal-nonmetal bonding in these interstitial alloys because it is believed that many of the physical properties of these materials are determined by the characteristics of this bond. Several of these alloys are ferromagnetic, and thus a powerful method is available for investigating the structures in a direct manner by measuring the saturation magnetization. The latter is a fundamental property of ferromagnetic metals and alloys which depends primarily on the electron distribution surrounding the atom. For the first row of transition metals, this refers specifically to the 3 d-shell. Since bonding involves the electronic configuration between atoms, there is reason to suppose that a relationship exists between ferromagnetism and bond type. In the case of the interstitial structures studied in this work, bonding will refer to the distribution of electrons between the transition metal and the nonmetal. Since these alloys have metallic properties, it is further proposed that any bonding interactions will involve the outer p-shell of the interstitial element and the incomplete d-shell of the transition metal. If this is the case, then the relationship between ferromagnetism and metal-non-metal bonding is established qualitatively. In order to investigate the subject quantitatively, certain transition metal nitrides were chosen because they have simple crystal structures, are ordered alloys, and are ferromagnetic. They also have sufficiently high saturation magnetization to be of technical interest. Currently there are two major theories of ferromagnetism, each of which has been applied to the interpretation of the saturation magnetization in terms of atomic structure. They are usually referred to as the band theory and the atomic theory. The former has found widespread application to the study of pure metals and certain solid-solution allays. However, it has not been applied to the interstitial structures or ordered alloys because it does not interpret the properties directly in terms of the crystal structure. The atomic theory on the other hand is especially suited to the study of interstitial structures because it permits an interpretation of ferromagnetic phenomena in terms of the crystal geometry. As has been pointed out previously, the nitrides have simple ordered crystal structures and, therefore, the choice of the atomic theory for the interpretation of the data is a natural one. One of the prime difficulties with the atomistic theory is that its mathematical justification is much more difficult, and for this reason its general acceptance will depend to a large extent on the value it has in explaining and predicting the results of experiment. Before the presentation of the theoretical basis for understanding the metal-nonmetal bond, it is useful to review the ideas existing prior to this work. Four different interpretations have been given to the metal-nonmetal bond. These are summarized as follows: 1—acceptance of electrons by the nonmetal from the incomplete d-shell of the transition metal, 2—transfer of electrons from the nonmetal to the incomplete shell of the transition metal, 3—no exchange of electrons between the two atoms, and 4— a resonating type of bond involving the p electrons of the interstitial atom giving rise to half bonds. Zener'-4 in a recent series of papers has proposed a new theory of ferromagnetism and has developed an explanation of the observed saturation magnetization of iron nitride (Fe,N) using the concept that nitrogen accepts electrons from the 3d-shell of iron. Jack," on the basis of atom size considerations in iron carbonitrides, has proposed that nitrogen transfers or donates electrons to the inner 3d-shell. He found that the effective size of the carbon atom was less than that of nitrogen and thus suggested that the interstitial atoms give up electrons. Kiessling" has studied the borides of several transition metal atoms and proposed that boron loses one p electron to the transition metal. He postulated that the additional electron added to the metal lattice compensates for the loss in metallic properties which results from the increased metal-metal atom separation. GuillaudT3" has proposed similar arguments from some recent magnetic studies he had made on manganese nitride. However, he did not base his conclusions on a quantitative argument. Pauling," in a recent paper, discussed electron transfer in in-termetallic compounds. He classified nitrogen as a hyperelectronic atom which can increase its valence by giving up electrons. He classified the transition metals as buffer atoms which are capable of either accepting or giving UP an electron. He pointed out that two factors are operating which promote electron transfer because they lead to increased stability. The first is an increase in the number of bonds, and the second is a decrease in the electric charges on the atoms. These ideas when applied to the interstitial nitrides would indicate a viewpoint favoring electron transfer by nitrogen to the transition metal. The wire textures for cold rolled and recrystallized iodide titanium and the sheet textures for this material produced by cold and hot rolling, and recrystallization at a series of temperatures were determined. &apos;The effect of the a + ß transformation on the sheet texture was noted. UNTIL recently it was believed that all hexagonal close-packed metals deformed by slip on the basal plane, (0001), and that rolling should tend to rotate this slip plane into the plane of the rolled sheet. The pole figures of cold rolled magnesium&apos; are satisfactorily explained on this basis. There is a tendency for the <1120> directions to align parallel to the rolling direction, and the principal scatter is in the rolling direction. Zinc% as a rolling texture in which the hexagonal axis is inclined 20" to 25" toward the rolling direction. Twinning is believed to account for the moving of the basal plane away from parallelism with the rolling plane. The texture of beryllium3 places the basal plane parallel to the rolling plane with the [1010] direction parallel to the rolling direction, and the scatter from this orientation is primarily in the transverse direction. Cold rolled textures reported for zirconium&apos; and titanium5 how the [1010] directions to lie parallel to the rolling direction and the (0001) plane tilted by approximately 25" to 30" to the rolling plane in the transverse direction. Rosi has recently reported that the mechanisms for deformation in titanium are distinctly different from those commonly reported for hexagonal close-packed metals. The principal slip plane is the prismatic plane, {1010), with some slip also occurring on the pyramidal planes, (1011). However, there is no evidence for basal slip. The slip direction is reported to be the close-packed digonal axis, [1120]. In addition to the twin plane commonly reported for metals of this class, {1012), Rosi found the twin planes (1122) and {1121), with the dominant twin plane being (1121). Information regarding the recrystallization and hot rolling textures of hexagonal close-packed metals is limited. Barrett and Smigelskas report that rolling beryllium at temperatures up to 800°C and recrystallization at 700°C produce textures not differing from the cold rolled sheet texture.3 McGeary and Lustman find that hot rolling at 850°C produces the same basic texture in zirconium as rolling at room temperature.&apos; These investigators also report that the texture for sheet zirconium recrystallized at 650 °C differs from the cold rolled orientation inasmuch as the [1120] direction, instead of the [1010] direction, is parallel to the rolling direction. In the case of titanium, it is not possible to deduce which direction is preferred in the recrystallized state from the pole figures presented by Clark." The purpose of this paper is to report an extensive investigation of the preferred orientations in iodide titanium. Since the deformation mechanisms for titanium are different from those commonly given for hexagonal close-packed metals, it is not surprising to find distinct differences between the textures of titanium and other metals of this class. Materials and Methods This investigation was carried out on iodide titanium obtained from the New Jersey Zinc Co. with an analysis as follows: N2, 0.002 pct; Mn, 0.004; Fe, 0.0065; A1, 0.0065; Pb, 0.0025; Cu, 0.01; Sn, 0.002; and Ti, remainder. The crystallities of titanium were broken from the as-deposited bar and melted to form 20 g buttons on a water-cooled copper block in a vacuum arc-furnace. Hardness tests conducted on the material before and after melting differed by only two or three Vickers Pyramid Numbers, indicating no or insignificant contamination. The buttons were hot forged, ground, and etched to sizes and shapes suitable for the rolling schedule, and vacuum annealed at 1300°F. Specimens for determination of the wire textures were reduced 91 pct in diameter to 0.027 in. in 24 steps using grooved rolls. In order for the orientation of the central region to be studied, portions of these wires were electrolytically reduced to a diameter of 0.005 in. using the procedure described by Sutcliffe and Reynolds.&apos; The sheet textures were determined on titanium cold rolled 97 pct to a thickness of 0.005 in. A reduction of approximately 10 pct per pass was used, and the rolling direction was changed 180" after each pass. Specimens used for determination of the recrystallized textures were annealed in evacuated quartz tubes at 1000°, 1300°, and 1500°F. The grain size of the 1000°F specimen was sufficiently small to give satisfactory X-ray patterns with the specimen stationary. However, it was necessary to scan the surface of the other recrystallized specimens. The microstructure of each annealed specimen was that of a recrystallized material. The diffraction rings all showed the break-up into spots typical of recrystallized structures.

INTRODUCTION The Henderson Mine, located near Empire, Colorado, utilizes a continuous panel caving system to extract ore as one of the world&apos;s major producers of molybdenum. Any mine using a caving-by-gravity technique of mining must rely on closely controlled draw of the caved ore. This control is essential to insure proper caving action, to avoid damaging load concentrations of weight and to minimize the dilution of ore with waste material. Henderson is no exception. Draw control is a major factor in all production planning, from long- range plans to short-range and day-to-day ore scheduling. Draw control is reviewed constantly and administered daily in an effort to optimize production efficiency, ore recovery, and cave management. MINING METHOD The cave at Henderson is massive, moving slowly through large panels that are 244 m (800 ft.) wide by 610 m (2,000 ft.) long. Generally two cave areas are drawn at one time. The areas under active draw vary in size but can be as large as 244 m (800 ft.) by 244 m (800 ft. ) containing 400 draw points. Each draw point contains 45,360 mt (50,000 st) on the average and takes about two and one half years to exhaust. A complete panel is worked for seven to ten years. No pillar exists between panels, but rather a buffer zone of broken ore, or "static face," is left in each panel to be drawn with the adjacent, yet-to-be-caved panel in efforts of minimizing dilution of a working area from an exhausted one. (Figure 1) Production drifts are driven on 24.4 m (80 ft.) centers through the ore body. Between the production drifts are funnel-shaped draw bells on 12.2 m (40 ft.) x 24.4 m (80 ft.) centers to receive ore from the cave. Each bell is accessed by two draw points, one from the production drift on either side, thus forming a 12.2 m (40 ft.) x 12.2 m (40 ft.) draw pattern. Extraction of the ore is by rubber-tired, 3.8 m3 (5 yd3) load-haul-dump equipment. The LHDs then tram the ore a maximum of 49 m (160 ft.) to ore passes. Cave initiation and bell development are done from the undercut drifts which are parallel to and 17 m (55 ft.) directly above the production drifts. Longhole rings are drilled and blasted from the undercut drifts to define the bells and establish the undercut for caving. (Figure 2) DRAW CONTROL Since the cave line at Henderson is constantly advancing, it is necessary to be continually initiating new cave at one end while exhausting it at the opposite end. There must exist, therefore, an angle on the ore-waste contact in the broken rock from initiation to exhaustion. The basic concept of draw control is to keep this angle as smooth and even as possible, particularly at the time of exhaustion. If this is achieved, draw points are exhausted more or less in a line, avoiding pockets of remaining ore surrounded by exhausted areas. These pockets would cause spotty ore extraction at the time of exhaustion, increasing the amount of dilution occurring while introducing the potential for significant weight problems in the production area. To arrive at the desired angle on the ore- waste contact, maximum tonnage percentages are assigned to each row of draw points increasing at 10% or 15% increments (depending on cave size and velocity of draw) working away from the cave line. The available tonnage indicated by these percentages is the maximum allowable tonnage to be extracted from each draw point until the available tonnage percent- age is increased. As the cave moves, these percentages increase for each draw point regularly. However, in general the tonnage drawn from each draw point is kept at about 50% of this allowable maximum in order to maintain adequate available tonnage in the cave to sustain production for seven months if cave initiation were to cease. This available tonnage cushion is a safeguard built into the draw control program at Henderson to accommodate fluctuations in the rate of cave advance. When draw points move past the row of 100% tonnage availability, they are drawn past the desired 50% at the same increments per row until exhausted. The various theories that have been advanced to explain or predict the conditions under which a metal fractures may be divided into two categories: First, there are the macroscopic theories generally used in engineering practice. These are empirical in nature and limited in application. For example, the maximum normal stress criterion, which is quite satisfactory for a mild steel in simple tension at atmospheric pressure,&apos; no longer suffices when this steel is pulled under hydrostatic pressure.2 In all of these empirical theories, the critical condition characteristic of the material and of the loading conditions must be obtained experimentally. Secondly, there are the theories based on interatomic forces,3&apos;4 or on the energy required to form new surfaces.5,6 These have all dealt with the theoretical evaluation of the tensile stress necessary to bring about rupture in a purely brittle manner; that is, without plastic flow preceding fracture. All of these attempts have led to values of the tensile strength of crystals or of polycrystalline bodies that are 100 to 1000 times higher than observed values. On this account, it has been thought necessary by some investigators to conceive of a microcrack structure or distribution of flaws throughout the specimen such that the resulting stress concentrations provide the factor necessary to bring about agree- ment between calculation and experiment. It has been pointed out by several observers&apos; that this point of view is highly unrealistic, in that the weakening effect of these flaws or microstructures must be very uniform from specimen to specimen, since the fracture stresses found for various specimens of the same material tested under similar conditions are so nearly constant. Furthermore, since calculations based on atomic forces or atomic energy are for purely brittle fracture, a condition probably never satisfied in tests, agreement is hardly to be expected. Thermodynamic Theory of Fürth In order to resolve this apparent discrepancy between the theoretical cohesive strengths and the observed fracture strengths, Fürth8 advanced a thermodynamic theory of the tensile strength of isotropic bodies based on work of Born relating to the melting of crystals. Assuming an isotropic material free from imperfections and flaws, behaving elastically up to the breaking point, and assuming a connection between rupture and the melting phenomenon, Fürth obtains an expression for the rupture stress a, in the form where Q is the melting energy per unit mass, p is the density, and is Poisson&apos;s ratio. Furth compares fracture stresses computed from Eq I with the fracture stresses of metals as given in the Landolt-Bernstein Tables (1927) and in the Hand-

Production of crude oil in Venezuela for the year 1937 was 186,653,-916 bbl., as compared with 155,228,982 bbl. produced in 1936, an increase of almost 31,500,000 bbl. The oil-field strike, which started on Dec. 14, 1936, lasted until Jan. 25, 1937, when a total of 10,000,000 bbl. of production was estimated to have been lost (5,750,000 bbl. in 1936 and the remainder in 1937). Of the total of 186,653,916 bbl. produced in 1937, the Lagunillas field contributed 45.6 per cent, a drop of approximately 10 per cent under 1936 figures; Tia Juana, 14.3 per cent; Quiriquire field, 14.0 per cent; La Rosa area, 13.3 per cent and the Mene Grande field, 7.6 per cent, these being the five leading contributors of the year&apos;s production. Detailed production figures by fields and by companies are shown on Table 1. Of the total production of Venezuela the following four major companies accounted for the greater proportion: Standard of Venezuela and Lago Petroleum Corporation together, 48.3 per cent; Shell, 37.4 per cent and Venezuela Gulf, 14.0 per cent. At the end of the year, 2491 wells were producing, of which number 1291 wells were pumpers, or about 52 per cent. Production The accompanying statistics of production record of Venezuela oil fields from its inception to Dec. 31, 1937, shown on Table 2, indicates that the cumulative production reached 1,503,283,228 bbl. In order of importance, Lagunillas leads all the fields, having accounted for about 50 per cent of Venezuelan production, followed by La Rosa area, which produced about 21 per cent; Mene Grande, which produced about 13 per cent, and Quiriquire, which produced 6.5 per cent. Table 3 shows the age of each field. Mene Grande is the oldest, having produced for 24 years; Tarra is next, 21 1/2 years old, and El Mene third, 171/2 years. The gravity of the crude from the various fields, also shown on Table 3, remained unchanged, the only addition being the new Tia Juana field, which averages 15.6&apos; A.P.I. Table 4 shows the method of production by fields as of Jan. 1, 1938; at the end of the year 2491 wells were producing, compared with 2005 wells producing at the beginning of 1937, or an increase of 486 wells. Of the 2491 wells producing crude oil, 1291 wells, or approximately 52 per cent, were pumping, 925 (approximately 37 per cent) were flowing naturally and 275 (11 per cent) were on

P. S. ROLLER,* College Park, Md.-The author introduces the idea of a grind limit, or lower size limit of the particles formed directly by grinding, and this is stipulated to be 0.70 micron. I wonder where all the particles come from that lie between the resolving power of the microscope and 0.7 micron, which are seen under a microscope in examining a sample of grind? There is also introduced the idea of excess fines; this is all right in itself but the author&apos;s quantitative definition seems to be virtually impossible to justify, and, moreover, is obscure. Just why E, the excess fines, should be defined as the distance between an F line and a y line is hard to follow, and just where the distance should be measured does not appear to be stated, as it should be since the F and y lines intersect and the distance between will depend upon where that distance is measured. The basis of the presentation is the relation of log weight against log size that was "discovered" by Schuhmann. While this relation is implied to fit, the only evidence that I can see is a slightly irregular line in Fig. I between 2 per cent and 18 per cent by weight and then a precipitous drop at 18 per cent away from any sort of straight line. Some of the conclusions are rather startling, It is stated that E, the excess fines, remains constant for all the comminution products of any particular material, except that it may decrease for some coarse crusher products. No reason is given for this assertion. One would, on the contrary, expect that excess fines, if such a concept is permissible, would generally vary with different conditions instead of being constant. Again, "as much net energy is required to reduce a ton of quartz to particles of the grind-limit diameter (namely, of course, 0.7 micron) by grinding as is required to melt the quartz." This would require many data to prove, but no proof is given; any consideration would reveal the impossibility of such a result. Still further, ore samples "ground to widely different sizes, and with different circulating loads and different size distributions or product, show the same production of new surface area per revolution of the mill, when this grind limit is used." This statement is confuted by ordinary experience, which teaches that grinding efficiency varies generally with the condition of material. For example, the cushioning effect of fines is widely accepted, while the inefficiency of a ball mill when the feed is too coarse is also well known. R. SCHUHMANN, JR.,* Cambridge, Mass.-Contrary to Mr. Bond&apos;s stand, there is a great deal of miscellaneous experimental evidence that comminution does not stop at around 0.7 micron, nor does it cease consuming energy at that point. Comminution is in fact recognized as an important method of producing colloids.5 Mechanical comminution methods were used by von Weimarn6 to produce colloidal dispersions of a variety of solids, including the minerals chalcocite, galena, hematite, stibnite. SOME advances have been made recently in the theory of the kinetics of precipitation from metallic solid solution despite the complexities of the problem, but there is surprisingly little quantitative information available on rates of precipitation with which to test present theory or upon which to build new theory.‡ Attempts to measure rates of precipitation have been beset with difficulties which originate both in the anomalies that attend the changes in the properties selected for measurement, as, for example, in electrical conductivity or mechanical properties, and also in the complexities in the structural changes in some systems, as in the aluminum-copper system. If the functional relationship between the quantity of precipitate and the value of the selected property is uncertain, measurements of that property are obviously of uncertain utility in determining absolute rates of precipitation. If the precipitating system passes through one or more transition stages, the interpretation of measured rates lacks definiteness; in such cases, it is necessary to measure the rate of reaction in each separate stage, if the rate measurements are to have any significance from the kinetic point of view.* These difficulties cannot be wholly avoided, for at least in some measure they are characteristic of the process of precipitation from solid solution, but they can be minimized both by the selection of a simple system and by the use of a method of measurement relatively free from anomalous behavior. The present paper reports dilatometric measurements on the rate of precipitation of silicon from the aluminum-rich solid solution in the aluminum-silicon system-a study that approaches the desiderata of simplicity. The aluminum-silicon system offers advantages from these points of view: there are no known anomalies in the property changes accompanying precipitation; 2.3,4 there are no known transition stages; the precipitate is an element, not a compound, and both matrix and precipitate are cubic, and while the structures are not identical (the solid solution is face-centered cubic and the precipitate is diamond cubic), the system at least approaches the ideal case of a crystal precipitating from a matrix of the same crystal type-the ideal case which Becker5 assumed in treating the precipitation process theoretically. The smelting of galena in the ore hearth has been practiced in many countries for several hundred years with varying success. In the United States, the water-jacketed American hearths and the Jumbb hearths have found some favor in the Missouri lead belt, where large quantities of non-argentiferous galena concentrates are produced. In form and method of operation the ore hearth has changed but little since its earliest conception. A detailed description of the furnace is lot needed here; it has been fully described in most works on the metallurgy of lead and in many technical papers. Since its field is restricted to non-argentiferous galena, containing over 68 per cent. of lead, its use is limited to a few districts; and, on account of certain disadvantages attending its operation, modern sintering and blast-furnace practice has nearly driven it out of the Missouri field. It is not generally known that the cost of producing pig lead is smaller by the hearth method than by sintering and blast-furnace smelting. Yet it is doubtful if any metallurgist knowing this to be true would recommend an American hearth installation—by reason of the disadvantages which will be briefly enumerated. The furnace has been limited to a length of from 4 to 5 ft., requiring for its operation two men working an 8-hr. shift as a maximum. The product per man is small; the work is hot and laborious; and the difficulty of completely removing the dust and fume has made it a notorious source of lead poisoning, Although suitable for operations on a small scale a large number of hearths would be required for a plant smelting 10,000 tons of 68 to 70 per cent. concentrates per month; and the number of semi-skilled laborers would be six times the number of hearths—a condition which is prohibitive. On account of the high percentage of dust and fume produced, a large flue and bag-house installation is required and, in the past, the handling and re-treatment of this dust and fume has -been a serious problem.

The phase is a hard and extremely brittle material with a tetragonal crystal structure, containing 30 atoms per unit cell&apos; It occurs in many binary and ternary alloys of the transition elements. The existence of twelve a phases has been reported in binary alloys of metals from the group vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten with metals from the group manganese, iron, cobalt, and nickel. It is a characteristic fact that the composition of the o- phases in the various binary systems is not the same. Rather, there is a gradual shift in composition, for instance in the series of chromium a phases, approximately as follows: CrMn,, FeCr, Cr3Co,. In recent years several ideas have been put forward to account for this variability of composition. SullyZ proposed that a was a type of electron compound, characterized by 1.7 electrons per atom in excess of the number required to fill the Pauling atomic orbitals. These excess electrons were supposed to just fill the first Brillouin zone of the u structure. However, later work indicated that the phase is ferromagnetic at low temperatures, so that a- is unlikely to be a full zone compound.~ Another proposal,* which is also based on the structure of the transition elements advanced by Pauling, and in fact leads to essentially the same a compositions as Sully&apos;s theory, suggests that the u phase is characterized by a constant number of electron vacancies per atom. The electron vacancy numbers N,. used were originally the same as those in the Pauling theory, but were later modified empirically vn order to bring about better agreement with data for the p phase in certain ternary systems. For alloys, N,, was calculated on the assumption of simple additivity from the electron vacancy numbers of the components, as follows: N,. = 4.66 (Mo + Cr + V) + 3.2 (Mn) + 2.2 (Fe) + 1.71 (Co) + 1.6 (Ni). On this basis a reasonably constant value of N, = 3.4 was obtained for all of the binary u phases and a fairly constant value of N,, = 3.1 for the various p phases. More recently, Bloom and Granta pointed out that a similar correlation with the total number of 3d and 4s electrons per atom is also fairly well fulfilled and concluded that no reference need be made to the Pauling theory. This proposal does not lead to the same binary a compositions as the one described above, so that the relative merits of the two proposals may be determined on the basis of direct comparison with experimental composition data. The purpose of the present paper is to provide such a comparison. Since the experimental data for the composition ranges of several of the known u phases were rather incomplete, it was decided to carry out new experimental determinations for many of the binary systems. Experimental Procedure The alloys were prepared by induction melting in recrystallized alumina crucibles, either in vacuum or in helium atmospheres. Some aluminum was picked up from the crucibles in the alloys of high vanadium content, but this was minimized by keeping the alloys in the molten state for as short a time as possible. The maximum aluminum impurity was 0.13 wt pct by chemical analysis, in an alloy containing over 50 wt pct V. In general, the as-melted compositions agreed accurately with those obtained by chemical analysis. In the case of manganese, however, losses inevitably occurred; consequently all manganese alloys were analyzed. Specimens of all alloys were annealed at temperatures ranging from 1000" to 1300°C in an atmosphere of purified 92 pct helium and 8 pct hydrogen mixture. All manganese alloys were sealed in quartz tubes under vacuum before annealing. The specimens were held at temperature for between four and eight days before being quenched into cold water. Alloys were prepared for microscopic examination by mechanical polishing, usually followed by electrolytic etching. X-ray diffraction specimens were prepared by crushing the homogenized alloys, and by reanneal-ing the obtained powders in evacuated quartz tubes for a few hours at the temperature of the lump anneal. Using- galvanic cells of the form Sn(liq)/Sn" (LiCl-KC1-SnCl,)/Sn-Ag (alloy), measurements have been made of relative thermodynamic properties of the a, C, E, and liquid phases of the Ag-Sn alloy system. Partial heats of solution of the components in the liquid alloys lzave also been observed by direct cal-orimetric measurement in an isoperibol calorimeter. The thermodynanzic quantities are disczlssed in relation to structural and other properties and the existence of anomalous minor fluctuations in the partial heats and entropies of solution in liquid alloys is tentatively suggested. In the course of a recent electro motive-force study of the thermodynamic properties of Sn-Ag-Pd liquids,&apos; some measurements were also performed on the Ag-Sn binary system. Most previous thermodynamic studies of this system have been concerned with the liquid state. Measurements confined to the limiting heat of solution of silver in liquid tin have been made by many calorimetric workers2 while high-temperature calorimetric measurements of the heats of formation of the full range of liquid alloys are reported in the early work of Kawakami~ (1323°K) and more recently by Wittig and Gehrin~(1248°K). Electromotive-force studies on liquid alloys have been made by Yanko, Drake, and Hovorka&apos; (606" to 686°K; 86 to 99.4 at. pct Sn) and by Frantik and Mc Donald&apos; (900°K; 30 to 90 at. pct Sn). The only known measurements on the solid state are of heats of formation of the a, £, and c phases; these values were obtained using tin-solution calorimetry, at 723"K, by Kleppa,~ whose investigation also yielded heats of formation of liquid alloys containing more than 64 at. pct Sn. The present experiments on the Ag-Sn alloys include a re-examination of the liquid phase and, because of the dearth of free-energy data for the solid state, attempted measurements on the a, c, and E phases. The principal new feature of electromotive-force results obtained for the liquid phase was an indication of anomalous fluctuations in the partial heats and entropies of solution of tin at certain compositions. However, since the values for these thermodynamic quantities were determined from the temperature coefficients of cell potentials, which are commonly subject to considerable error, confirmation by calorimetric measurements was considered desirable. A detailed investigation of the partial heats of solution of the components in the binary liquids was made using a liquid metal solution calorimeter. I) GALVANIC CELL STUDIES a) Experimental Details. Measurements were made, as a function of alloy composition and temperature, of the potentials of reversible galvanic cells of the form: ~n(liq)/~n++/~n-Ag (solid or liquid alloy) Details of the apparatus and experimental techniques have been given elsewhere.&apos; so that a brief account will suffice here. Molten salt, 58 mole pct LiC1-42 mole pct KC1, containing small amounts (1 to 2 mole pct) of stannous chloride was used as the electrolyte. The salts were dehydrated by pre-electrolysis and vacuum -drying techniques. Cells were established under an argon atmosphere by immersing tin and alloy electrodes in the molten salt contained in a large silica tube, heated in a vertical resistance furnace. The tube was sealed at the top by a head plate provided with openings permitting the simultaneous insertion of six electrodes, a central thermocouple sheath, and connections to vacuum and argon lines. Temperatures were controlled to *0.2"C over prolonged periods, with maximum variation over the electrodes at any time of 0.l°C. Temperatures were measured with a standardized Pt/13 pct Rh-Pt couple. The electromotive force of this and the cell potentials were measured on a Cambridge Vernier potentiometer and short-period galvanometer. Alloys were prepared from Pass "S" tin (99.999 pct) and Johnson-Matthey high-purity silver (99.999 pct) by melting in evacuated silica capsules and quenching in cold water. For liquid phase experiments, pieces of the resulting alloys were remelted into prepared silica electrode units, while solid electrodes were prepared by remelting into 3-mm bore tubing, inserting a cleaned molybdenum lead wire, and quenching to produce uniform rods about 3 cm in length, with soundly attached leads. In all cases remelting was done under an argon atmosphere. The solid electrodes were subsequently annealed in evacu ated silica tubes for 14 days at about 20°C below the solidus and quenched. Analyses showed that these techniques produced uniform electrodes with no significant change from weighed out compositions. b) Results and Discussion. Measurements were made on about forty alloys in the solid and liquid states, over varying ranges of temperature between 550" and 1050°K. One of the well-known and important uses of the noble or precious metals has been for electrical contacts. In fact, the elements of this group, comprising gold, silver and the six platinum metals, have been called "noble" because of their ability to resist heat and corrosion, properties which were early found to be of importance in good contacts. Of these, platinum and its iridium alloys, palladium, and silver, have been extensively used. In recent years the electrical industry has been responsible for about one-eighth of the total consiimption of the platinum metals in the United States. Information is not available as to what part of this one-eighth has been used for contacts but it is certainly an important one. Substitutes for Platinum During the past 20 years a considerable number of contact alloys have been proposed in the patent literature largely with the aim of more or less replacing platinum by gold or silver, and some of these alloys are finding increasingly widespread application as the reliability of their performance becomes established. From even the partial data at hand it appears that this substitution by the less precious metals has replaced at least one-half of the amount of platinum that the entire electrical industry would otherwise be consuming at the present time. While the subject is of considerable interest to the metallurgist it is even more so to the electrical engineer and it is surprising that the literature records no systematic and comprehensive investigation along these lines. Practically all the scattered work on noble metal contacts has centered around platinum as a standard and has had two more or less distinct aims. One of these has been the replacement of platinum by cheaper matcrials, and the other, the dcveloprnent of materials of superior electrical performance. The merit of a contact metal has been assumed to be dependent on its infusibility, and since thc more precious metals have the higher melting points there has naturally been an association of the two qualities in the sense that the more precious were

REVIEWS on the applications of optical ellipsometry to the study of polycrystalline metal surfaces and oxidation-corrosion processes have been presented by Kruger and Hayfield, and white.&apos; In view of the ability of this method to measure differences in film thicknesses to below 10A, ellipsometry was used to study nitrogen chromium surface reactions during the early stages of growth. Chromium specimens in the form of a vapor-deposited film on glass substrate were exposed to purified nitrogen for selected time increments at 700°F. This temperature was selected because it gave the best combination of exposure time and thickness change. Ellipsometer readings were taken immediately after exposure to determine polarizer and analyzer angles using monochromatic light at 5000A.2 After each set of readings was obtained, the specimens were exposed for an additional increment of time in nitrogen and a new set of readings taken. Film thickness was computed from LUCy&apos;s3 equation for nonabsorbing thin films. In Lucy&apos;s derivation, two equations for computing thickness were obtained. Peterson and Bashara4 have discussed the validity for using one of these equations when an independent value of the refractive index is used. The film was assumed to be Cr2N (Ref. 5) and was determined to be optically isotropic. Optical isotropy was determined by rotating the films about the surface normal and noting that the azimuth and phase difference did not change. Since Cr2N is reported to be hexagonal, it is assumed that optical isotropy results from randomly oriented grains of very small size. The thickness was computed using refractive indexes varying from 1.6 to 2.0. The maximum variation in computed thickness over this range for a given exposure was 20 pct. The data reported are based on a refractive index of 1.8. Reference readings on the metal surface were taken just prior to nitrogen exposure. No attempt was made to deoxidize or denitride the metal surface after vapor deposition, although specimens were observed to gain approximately 2A per day in air at room temperature. Twelve experimental exposures were made on a single sample over a total accumulative time of 132 min. Additional experiments over longer time intervals were made to determine the effect of heat up and cool down during and after exposure. As a result of these experiments, the thickness computed for each exposure was increased by 4A. Time profiles based on the linear law are similar to the oxidation profiles for many metals.&apos; The rate of accumulation of the nitride film is rapid at first and slows down as the film thickness increases. The parabolic law x2 =k1t +k2 [11 gives a straight line in Fig. 1; therefore, it is concluded that the kinetic behavior is parabolic. Sey-bolt and Haman5 reported similar results for CrlN on chromium at 1000°C although the order of the thickness was much greater (10-3 cm). Analysis of thickness data based on other values of refractive index shows that the curves are shifted vertically but retain the same shape. According to Mott,7 it is expected that for thin films k2 is zero in Eq. [I]. Since the plot in Fig. 1 is linear through the origin, k2 is zero and the parabolic nature of the film growth is further indicated. The parabolic rate constant, calculated from the slope in Fig. 1, is 4.4 x 10-16 sq cm per sec. The corresponding work (+) required to bring an electron from the metal into the oxide is estimated to be 1.5 ev.7 The author thanks professor N. M. Bashara and D. W. With so tremendous a subject, an attempted review of the coal situation of the world in a short talk must necessarily be of a sketchy character. It is hardly necessary to tell a body of engineers that had it not been for nature&apos;s gift of coal the material side of modern civilization would never have reached its present status. On the other side, it is regrettable that it was a byproduct of coal, T. N. T., which made possible Germany&apos;s initial success in this war, because that country had an enormous development of manufacturing plants that could be immediately utilized to make this destructive agent: One sometimes hears the casual remark that when the coal of the world is exhausted we shall use electricity; but, of course, electricity is ordinarily only a means of transforming and transmitting energy derived from fuel or water power, and chiefly from coal. It is true, we have much undeveloped water power, but it is more or less remote from &apos;the, centers of industry; and when all shall have been developed it will not begin to supply the power requirements of the world. It is, however, reasonable to expect that before the world&apos;s supply of coal shall be exhausted, methods will have been discovered of harnessing other forces of nature, such as the tides, or the energy emanating from the sun. Petroleum and natural gas naturally come to mind, but the days of both, as fuel, appear to be numbered, although the products of petroleum, if economically used, doubtless will be available for internal-combustion engines, automobiles, trucks, and boats for a long time, provided the reckless use of crude petroleum as an ordinary fuel is stopped. The products of petroleum are too valuable to mankind for such waste to be permitted. The civilization of the world, therefore, appears to rest, and, so far as can be seen, will indefinitely continue to rest, upon coal. A development which could prove significant was the announcement on September 18 by Lone Star Industries, Inc., Greenwich, Conn., that the Snyder process which utilizes shock phenomena to break down ore in seconds, is operational. J. R. Kringel, chairman and president of Lone Star, says this about the process: "This new approach to the comminution of ores not only provides better mineral liberation at lower capital and operating costs, but it also makes a significant contribution toward the more efficient utilization of the country&apos;s rapidly depleting mineral reserves." The Snyder process consists of loading the material into a chamber, introducing a compressible working fluid such as steam under 300-500 psi, or as low as 80 psi, and then opening a millisecond-action discharge valve, causing the material to become entrained in the expanding fluid. The mixed fluid moves through a duct toward a discharge zone at near-sonic velocity, and is subject to a variety of extreme shock phenomena which accomplish the desired size reduction and mineral liberation.

Unit Rig & Equipment Co., manufacturer of Lectra Haul trucks, is continually studying methods of reducing the operating costs of large haulage trucks. Reduction of haulage system operating costs is an important goal that equipment operators and equipment manufacturers constantly try to improve on. One of the most variable and important factors affecting operating costs is actual truck operating practices. An examination was centered on methods to optimize truck utilization. It was found that a very effective method of accomplishing this goal would be an automatic truck control (ATC) system to automatically control a fleet of haulage trucks in a predetermined pattern. Economic studies were conducted which showed a very favorable reduction in mine operating costs by use of an ATC system. In 1970, Unit Rig & Equipment Co., in conjunction with SAAB-SCANIA began preliminary development of adapting, for truck use, a proven automated control system, previously used for train systems, small trucks, and military target vehicles. In 1974, the first prototype system was installed on a Lectra Haul M-100 and tested extensively at Unit Rig&apos;s test track in Tulsa, OK. This truck and system were then displayed publicly at the 1974 convention in Las Vegas. In 1976, the system was redesigned for production to maximize reliability, ease maintenance, and to accommodate future control and-status reporting developments proposed for haulage trucks. The new design equipment was manufactured, and a full system test will be conducted in an actual open-pit mine for an extended period to evaluate reliability, compile economic data, and obtain application information to evaluate complete mine haulage system conversions to ATC. System Description The ATC system is designed to provide automatic control of all the vehicle functions normally accomplished by the vehicle operator. The basic system consists of the on-board control equipment and the wayside control equipment. The on-board equipment receives commands from the wayside equipment and controls all the truck functions. In addition, on-board sensors monitor all critical truck functions and provide instructions to the truck and system to assure safe operation. The wayside equipment consists of a buried guidewire, block control units and a central controller which provides predetermined signals to the on-board equipment for speed control, steering, and for auxiliary functions (dumping, horn, etc.) through the guidewire located in the truck&apos;s path. The wayside equipment also controls vehicle separation, system status, and provides truck location to a central display panel. The central control panel can vary the speed level signals over any segment and can also command an emergency stop to halt all the units. [Fig. 1] illustrates a typical ATC installation. If ATC is used in operations which require flexibility and mobility at the end of the ATC guidance network, the trucks can then be operated by either radio remote control or manually to complete their assigned functions.
