This paper is limited primarily to a description of dry coal-cleaning processes in which air currents are used to effectuate a separation between coal and refuse. Processes depending mainly on differences in the coefficient of friction, resilience and shape are not described unless the use of air is necessary for the proper functioning of the process. The air cleaning of coal is of primary importance to the coal industry of the United States. From figures presented in the 1941 edition Mechannual, it is estimated that at least 12 million tons of bituminous coal was cleaned in the United States during 1940 by machines using air as the separating medium. One of the current problems confronting the coal-preparation engineer is the dry cleaning of small sizes and slacks. Progress in machine development for the cleaning of small sizes has been slow in recent years in the United States of America; it has been much more rapid in Britain and on the European continent. This paper does not attempt an exhaustive survey of all these developments, and only machines and processes that have found considerable commercial application are cited. Further, no critical analysis has been made of the theory involved in the separation of coal from refuse by processes using air as the separating medium other than that necessary for an understanding of particular machine designs and applications. The possibility of using air for the separation of coal from refuse was recognized early by mining men and many attempts were made to develop commercial machines. The ingenuity of the early experimenters is to be marveled at in view of their lack of knowledge of the theoretical principles involved. As in other arts, practice has largely preceded theory. Yet, science and practice play a game of leap frog, now one ahead, then the other; the careful experimenmenter governs his efforts along practical lines by adapting his experiments to the limits prescribed by scientific laws. By first studying developments and the theory involved, it is not only possible to adapt processes to new uses but also to reduce materially operating cost and to build larger units without costly failures. Although many inventors have applied for patents for separating minerals by the use of air currents, the literature in regard to coal is meager. Berrisford2 describes briefly some of the early attempts to clean coal without the use of water. Several of the examples cited by him are reproduced herein. Fig. I shows a machine used for grinding and; izing, in which rollers running in a pan with a perforated bottom and fan opening on the side crushed the coal, which was then carried by the air currents to a settling chamber. The heaviest particles dropped out first and the light ones farthest away, as shown. In the year 1864, a machine was made that could be used as a sizer or to separate dirt from coal with a sized feed (Fig. 2).

This paper states the theory underlying the design of two kinds of dimensionally scaled models of parts of idealized oil fields. One of these simulates an oil well and its surrounding sand for a distance of 16 ft. radially from the well. The other model simulates linear flow through layered sands. Construction and operation of the models are described and typical data are given. The unique features in the design of the models are: (I) the treatment of the permeability-viscosity quotient as a single variable and (2) the use of previously reported experimentally developed relations between relative permeability and saturation and capillary pressure, saturation, porosity, permeability and interfacial tension. The models at present simulate flow of oil and water only, through unconsolidated sands. They are superior to unscaled models, which may give rise to erroneous conclusions. The models are designed to study the desirability of various methods of well completion and the effects of various factors on recovery of oil from layered sands. Introduction Recent work on the fundamental behavior of flowing mixtures of fluids in sands has resulted in the development of some new theory in this field, much of which has been presented in previous papers.l-4 However, the application of this theory to the behavior of oil wells or oil fields has proved too complicated for ordinary mathematical techniques, except in very highly simplified cases. A practical solution to this problem appears therefore, to lie in the use of dimensionally scaled models of elements of oil fields. The object of this paper is, first, to present the theoretical and experimental basis of the design of such models, and, second, to describe their construction and operation. Experiments now under way on the models already built will yield material for other reports, which will be devoted to interpretation of the results in terms of oil-field behavior. So far, simple dimensional models of two kinds have been built and are being operated. These models represent different parts of an idealized oil field but obey the same underlying theory. The only fluids represented are oil and water, since certain questionable approximations are necessary for gas-liquid systems. General Theory Dimensional models have been used in other fields for a long time, and their theory is adequately given in the literature. 5 Here, it suffices to state that each physical element entering into a dynamic relation may be given a definite description in terms of three fundamental, but arbitrarily chosen, dimensions. These usually are mass, length, and time, symbolized here by the small letters m, I, and t. Two systems are said to be dimensionally similar or dimensionally scaled if for each element in one system there is a corresponding element in the second system and the ratios of the numerical magnitudes of corresponding elements are constant for all elements of the same dimensional type.

The importance of the pressing operation in the forming of articles by powder metallurgy depends to a great extent on the type of product to be made. While in some few cases the pressing is merely a means of compacting loose powder particles into a solid mass preliminary to a sintering treatment, in most applications it constitutes a molding operation with the purpose of shaping the raw material in powder form into a certain predetermined, accurately defined part not altered in shape by subsequent sintering. In still other cases, no pressing at all but sintering in molds gives useful articles. A limited number of products are made by the simultaneous application of pressure and heat. The factors that control the product of the pressing operation are raw material, lubricant, type, size and shape of die and compact, magnitude and time of application of pressure, as well as temperature of pressing. All such factors need to be controlled; yet, depending on the function of the pressing operation, greater emphasis may be placed on processing factors other than the pressing operation. In any complete discussion of pressing, subsequent sintering cannot be disregarded. For the sake of brevity, the present paper has been limited to the mechanics of pressing and only occasionally refers to sintering. For the same reason, hot-pressing has been omitted as beyond the scope of this paper In any survey of the literature on the pressing of metal powders, the 1938 paper of Balshinl on the theory of the process of pressing deserves mention. The first attempts at an interpretation of pressing phenomena were made by Balshin' and RakovskL2 The experimental results of both are of great interest. Since the experimental results are not described, the work was repeated, using our own interpretation of the possible techniques, and is reported in the following pages. The basic theory of Balshin,' based on a hydro-dynamic analogy, however, leads to hut another way of plotting density and pres- , sure against height of a pressed compact. Since it does not give any new insight into the phenomena, nor account for the influence of side-wall friction, a discussion of the theory has been omitted from this paper. Density Gradients in Compacts The process of pressing metal powders in a die (disregarding for this consideration the powder filling and ejection operations) may be divided into three phases: (I) packing, (2) elastic and plastic deformation, (3) cold-working with or without fragmentation. Natural carbon dioxide has recently been exploited in the United States in consequence of oil and gas developments in the Western States and the growing demand by transcontinental and transoceanic shippers for solid carbon dioxidc. The discovery by drilling of commercial deposits resulted in consideration of its geographic and geologic distribution and occurrence. Its wide distribution in nature is evidenced by its occurrence in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere. The question of origin of carbon dioxide involves consideration of theories similar to those concerning natural hydrocarbons, although available evidence favors an inorganic rather than an organic source. Areas favorable to development of commercia1 production appear to be those in proximity to igneous rocks or in the vicinity of decadent volcanic activity, where, it has long been known, the gas is evolved either free or dissolved in the waters of fumaroles, geysers or mud pots. Structure contour maps are presented showing the Wagon Mound anticline in New Mexico and the Farnham anticline, Utah. A well drilled on the latter supplies gas to a 20-ton plant manufacturing solid carbon dioxide at Wellington, Utah, on the Denver and Rio Grande R.R., whence it is shipped to surrounding territory and to the West Coast. Before funds are invested in a plant for the manufacture of liquid or solid carbon dioxide, whether supplied by wells or springs, an effort to ascertain the volume of gas available is advisable. The use of present methods of estimation of gas reserves with modifications to account for the quantity absorbed by any water present in the producing formation is recommended. The Farnham anticline is used as an example and computations are made of the probable volume of gas originally present in the structure. No attempt was made to compute reserves in the Niland area, California, for the reason that in such areas it is believed the volume is indeterminate. Introduction Carbon dioxide, in liquid and solid form, has found a wide variety of uses other than its primary application in carbonating beverages. It is now used in more than 40 different ways, ranging from cooling or freezing to use in gas or liquid form for mechanical purposes, chemical industry, explosive, fire extinction, and tire manufacturing. Undoubtedly the chief supply of carbon dioxide is obtained from industrial plants or artificial sources and until recently natural deposits of the gas have received little consideration. INRODUCTION Roan Consolidated Mines Limited (RCM) operates five underground mines - Mufulira, Luanshya, Baluba, Chambeshi and Chibuluma (figure 1) . Associated metallurgical plants provide for the operations of milling, smelting two refineries for copper and a cobalt plant. Primarily a producer of high quality copper (242,000 tonnes during 1980) the Company is also the world's second largest producer of cobalt metal. RCM's remaining ore reserves at 31st March 1980 were 275 million tonnes at 2.84% copper. Monthly ore production is in excess of 1.2 million tonnes. Sublevel open stoping was the choice of mining method for the first underground operations on the Copperbelt for ore with dips steeper than 30 degrees. This was for use at the Roan Antelope mine, subsequently to be called Luanshya mine. The sublevel open stoping system was planned based on the methods used in many of the iron mines of Michigan and New York and in the copper mines of Tennessee. Peterson (Ref. 1) gave the following reasons for employing sublevel stoping, reasons which are still valid today: (1) the working place could always be barred and made safe, and the sublevel exit was always at hand; (2) the working conditions were similar day by day and drilling operations were repetitive; (3) pillar spacing can be varied as conditions demand; and (4) stoping operations could be shut down completely or opened up to full capacity at short notice, without affecting grade or causing wastage of reserves. Such was the success of the method that it was adopted as the basic mining method at all the RCM mines in their initial stages. Although cut and fill, block caving, and sub- level caving methods have been used, sublevel open stoping in its many variants still accounts for nearly 90% of total ore production in the Company. The following descriptions outline some of the applications of sublevel open stoping within RCM. LUANSHYA Geology There are two main ore deposits at Luanshya: the Roan (Luanshya Mining Area), in which mining began in 1930, and Baluba, in which mining production started in 1973 (figure 2). Both orebodies occur in synclinal and variably folded basins. These basins are underlain and completely surrounded by much older schists and granites. The ore formation, an argillite, lies near the base of the sediments and is underlain by conglomerates, quartzites and arkoses. Copper mineralisation is mainly found in two well defined zones, separated by a varying thickness of pyrite mineralisation. In the eastern part of the Roan deposit only the upper orebody is present, but west of 18 shaft and at Baluba the lower orebody predominates. Locally the subjacent quartzites of the footwall formation are also mineralised with copper. The copper mineralisation is found princi- pally as disseminated sulphides, mainly chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite. Near the surface the sulphides have been changed to oxides. At Baluba the cobalt mineral carrollite is found with the sulphides. Mining methods Sublevel open stoping is the basic mining method. In its standard form this method is best suited to steeply inclined orebodies, with simple structures and with a strong foot- wall and hangingwall. In recent years, as more complex folding and flatter dipping orebodies have been encountered, considerable variations have been introduced. Stope drilling is effected with drifters and extension steel.

Since both rotary and jet piercing drills are used by the Iron Ore Co. at Smallwood, it is often desirable in planning to know in which regions of the orebody or new orebodies a particular drill will be the most economic. This makes it necessary to establish a correlation between drillability and pierceability and some physical rock properties. For rotary drills a good correlation was found with penetration rate and grinding factor index. The jet piercers were found to have a reciprocal relationship in the sense that the best rotary ground was the worst jet ground and vice versa. It is also indicated how an economic comparison could be made using these penetration rate versus grinding factor index curves, the hole size distribution curves for single pass and chambered holes and the mine distribution curve for grinding factor index. A discussion is presented on the fuel oxygen ratios to be used in jet piercing and on the site gas sampling and analysis which has been used to set up the drills. The fuel has been cut back so that stoichio-metric conditions exist, carbon monoxide is drastically reduced and pop-up or exploding holes eliminated. No decrease in penetration rate has been observed contrary to the published results of previous workers. The blasting procedure and results at Smallwood are discussed and the operation of Iron Ore Co.'s slurry pump-mix truck is also described briefly. Smallwood mine is part of the Iron Ore Co.'s Carol Lake operation and is situated in Labrador, 240 miles north of Sept-Iles, Quebec. Last year 15 million tons of crude ore were crushed to yield 6.3 million tons of concentrate and pellets. This year the figures will be 17 million tons of crude and 7% million tons of concentrate and pellets which is the full plant capacity. Carol Lake ores consist primarily of specularite and magnetite mixed with quartz. For convenience the ore has been split-into the following classifications depending on the percentage of magnetics in the sample, shown in brackets: specularite (0 to 10%), specularite-magnetite (10 to 20%), magnetite- specularite (20 to 30%), magnetite (>30%). The order of classification also represents the order of increasing grinding difficulty - the specularite generally being the easiest and the magnetite the hardest. The orebody also contains a small percentage of waste materials consisting of limonite carbonate, quartz carbonate and quartz magnetite. The first two materials are among the softest in the mine, generally softer than the specularite, and the quartz magnetite is amongst the hardest. The bulk of the material in the mine is of the specularite-magnetite and magnetite-specularite classifications. As a result of test drilling at Smallwood in 1960 with rotary, jet and percussion drills, the Iron Ore Co. purchased four JPM-4 jet piercers for the bulk of production drilling and set up an oxygen plant to supply 20 tons of oxygen per day. This oxygen is sufficient for two machines operating full time and one part time. In addition, there are two 50-R, one 60-R and one 40-R machines in use. The benches are 45 ft high and 50 ft holes are generally drilled. JET DRILLING At the onset of jet drilling in the late fall of 1962, two major problems were encountered: 1) freezing due to winter operations; experience and the use of heat at more places, such as the rotary head, has eliminated this,'" and 2) exploding or "popping" drilled holes; this happened frequently (several holes "popping" each day) and was the cause of two lost time accidents. In one instance a hole was being measured with a tape which fell down the hole causing it to "pop." Safety glasses though pulverized saved the wearer's eyesight. Various methods were then employed to detonate the holes before measuring or loading (dropping lighted rags of fusees down, or sparking across a spark gap). These methods were time consuming and far from completely successful. Consideration was given to the fuel oxygen ratio on the machines and what this would produce in the way of product gases. A fuel oxygen weight ratio of 0.35 which was quite oxygen negative was being used. Theoretically appreciable carbon monoxide would be produced at this fuel oxygen ratio. On the close down procedure of the jet which calls for low oxygen after flame out, oxygen would be left in the hole along with this carbon monoxide. This is an explosive mixture. THE search for potash salts in the great "Red Beds? region of the Southwest, conducted for several years by the U. S. Geological Survey, the work being carried on for a part of the time in coöperation with the Bureau of Economic Geology and Technology of the University of Texas, has resulted in the discovery, within shafting depth, of potash salts, apparently of workable thickness and commercial quality, and prob-ably of great extent. Definite information is lacking as to the exact thickness of the potash beds, the size and boundaries of the areas underlain by workable strata, and the locations of the deposits richest and most favorably situated for exploitation. Briefly to review the salient features, of the general situation: We have in the great Red Beds region of the southwestern United States, embracing portions of central Kansas, western Oklahoma, eastern New Mexico, and northern and western Texas, .a series of sandstones. shales, anhydrite beds, clays and limestones, which; through an interval of 1000 ft., more or less, carry beds of salt, estimated by Darton1 to contain over 30,000 billions of tons of rock salt. It is the greatest known salt field of the world. At some points the intercalated beds of rock salt, one of which is reported by the driller to exceed 300 ft. in thickness, aggregate, accord-ing to the drillers' records, over 1000 ft. The sedi-mentary strata are similar in composition to those carrying the potash deposits of western Europe, and they were laid down at the same time and under condi-tions which, in many respects at least, were similar The stratigraphy and character of the beds are des-cribed by Darton2 and a, part of the area and the reported aggregate thicknesses of salt are shown, with some revision after Darton, in the accompanying map Fig. 1. The assumption that in the great areas of shallow evaporation basins spread over -the vast base-level region of saline deposition in the Southwest during Permo-Triassic time, potash salts were in some places, and at different stages, thrown down in crystalline deposits associated with the beds of rock salt, anhydrite, and gypsum, is, geologically speaking, more than reason-able. They are to be expected, and the conviction that they are probably present has long been held both in the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology and Tech-nology, under Dr. J. A. Udden, and in the- U. S. Geological Survey. Accordingly, for many years, efforts to determine whether potash deposits are present in this region have been made, though under very great difficulties, such as insufficient funds for boring, hack of drilling on private initiative in the more promising regions, hack of interest at first on the part of the drillers and companies, and, hater, inadequacy both of the methods of boring and of the sampling, to reveal in definite terms the thickness-of any saline stratum of given composition.

A review is given of the principles on which recently proposed methods of electric log interpretation in shaly sands are based and of the evidence brought up in support of the theoretical derivations. It is. pointed out that the qualitative techniques suggested to date have a tendency to be too pessimistic in the prediction of the presence of commercial hydrocarbon accumulations. In the quantitative treatment, a new concept is introduced, namely that of strongly reduced activity of the double layer counter ions which are present near the negatively charged rock surfaces. This lemmu when applied to the calculation of the equilibrium concentratiotls of interstitial waters yields a set of very simple relations. The resulting expressions for electrochemical potentials across rock samples appear in satisfactory agreement with laboratory experiments. The formulae obtained for the electrical conductivity of shaly formatioris are of the same form as those arrived at empirirally by previous workers. Combination of the expres.riorls for potentia1s and conductivities gives a direct proof of the Tixier relation which states that for shaly water sands the product of apparent formation water resistivity and apparent formation factor equals the resistivity of the sand 100 per cent .saturated with formalion water and which was verified by the work of Wyllie and Perkins and their co-workers. The relations for the resistivities and spontaneous porer11inI.s have been extended to the case of hydrocarbon hearing shaly formations, thus laying a formal basis for the quantitative interpretation of electric logs in shaly oil sands. INTRODUCTION The presence of disseminated clays in porous rocks saturated with electrolytic solutions has a strong influence on the transference of ions taking place under electrical or chemical potential gradients. Both the electrochemical emf's in evidence on the SP curves of electric logs and the electrical conductivity measured on resistivity logs arc directly dependent on the ionic transference in the interstitial waters of the formations traversed by boreholes. A large number of researches have been carried out on the nature and magnitude of the effects of clays on ionic transference. The most recent of these have been described in papers by McCardell and Winsauer,1 2 Wyllie and Southwick,3 poupon, Loy, and Tixier,4 and by Perkins et al.5 Most of these authors consider the effects of the clays as due to the fixed negative charges on the clay lattice. These charges cause the formation of diffuse surface layers with a high concentration of positive ions. The internal solution of the shaly reservoir rock has therefore a different ionic composition and concentration than the electrolyte with which it is in equilibrium (connate water produced from the formation or mud filtrate by which the formation is invaded). To calculate the equilibrium concentration of the internal solution, use is made of the Donnan6 relation, which states that the mean ionic activities of the internal solution and of the external electrolyte must be equal. Henry Marion Howe, in whose memory we are gathered together, was one of the great thinkers who develop from time to time to whom is given the rare gift of synthesis. Analysis is given to few, but synthesis, the ability to show the relation of all parts to each other and thus to give a clear picture of the whole, is reserved for the very few. Analysis can be achieved by honesty, intelligence, and industry, but synthesis is only given to genius. Professor Howe's crowning achievement is the picture of the whole iron-carbon series shown in Fig. I, which places steel, malleable, gray iron, mottled and chilled irons in their proper relation to each other and shows the essential unity of the series. Perhaps his best statement of the case is found on page go of the Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron in these words: " Each member of the gray cast-iron series consists of the metallic matrix approximately equivalent to that member of the steel-white-cast-iron series to which it corresponds in percentage of combined carbon with its continuity broken up—by masses of graphite ..." Apparently he had taken considerable interest in this idea around the turn of the century, for he refers to a discussion at the Franklin Institute in I900 in which he said: "Though many others had probably conceived this relation between the steels and cast irons, it was here enunciated for the first time, so far as I know. It was received with great incredulity." The concept was explained in some detail in a paper on "The Constitution of Cast Iron" presented before the A.S.T.M. in 1902 when Professor Howe was retiring president of that young society. Henry Marion Howe, in whose memory we are gathered together, was one of the great thinkers who develop from time to time to whom is given the rare gift of synthesis. Analysis is given to few, but synthesis, the ability to show the relation of all parts to each other and thus to give a clear picture of the whole, is reserved for the very few. Analysis can be achieved by honesty, intelligence, and industry, but synthesis is only given to genius. Professor Howe's crowning achievement is the picture of the whole iron-carbon series shown in Fig. I, which places steel, malleable, gray iron, mottled and chilled irons in their proper relation to each other and shows the essential unity of the series. Perhaps his best statement of the case is found on page go of the Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron in these words: " Each member of the gray cast-iron series consists of the metallic matrix approximately equivalent to that member of the steel-white-cast-iron series to which it corresponds in percentage of combined carbon with its continuity broken up—by masses of graphite ..." Apparently he had taken considerable interest in this idea around the turn of the century, for he refers to a discussion at the Franklin Institute in I900 in which he said: "Though many others had probably conceived this relation between the steels and cast irons, it was here enunciated for the first time, so far as I know. It was received with great incredulity." The concept was explained in some detail in a paper on "The Constitution of Cast Iron" presented before the A.S.T.M. in 1902 when Professor Howe was retiring president of that young society. DURING the investigation of the electrical transport properties of copper, it became necessary to prepare large single crystals of the highest obtainable purity. In an effort to meet these demands, single crystals of copper have been grown by the conventional pulling technique—as has been used for the growth of germanium and silicon crystals.' Low-temperature resistance measurements made on these crystals show that, as far as their electrical properties are concerned, they are generally of significantly higher purity than the original high-purity material. The use of these pure single crystals with very high resistance ratios has made possible the acquisition of detailed information regarding the electron energy band structure of copper2-' and has stimulated widespread effort on Fermi surface studies of a number of other pure metals. It is the purpose of this note to describe our method of preparing very pure copper crystals by the Czochralski technique. Precautions were taken to prevent contamination of the melt from the crystal growing apparatus. A new fused silica growing chamber was used to prevent possible contamination from previous groqths of other materials such as germanium, silicon, and so forth. A new high-purity graphite crucible was used to contain the melt. This crucible was baked out in a hydrogen atmosphere at -1200°C for an hour, prior to its use in crystal growth. Commercial tank helium, containing uncontrolled traces of oxygen, was used as the protective atmosphere. A trace of oxygen in the atmosphere appears to be necessary for obtaining high-purity copper single crystals. A 3/8-in-diam polycrystalline copper rod of the same purity as the melt was used as a seed. The copper rod was allowed to come in contact with the melt while rotating at 57 rpm. When an equilibrium was observed between the melt and the seed (that is, the seed neither grew nor melted), the seed was pulled away from the melt at a rate of 0.5 mils per sec. As the seed was raised, the melt temperature was slowly increased, so that the grown material diminished in diameter with increasing length. When this portion of the grown crystal was -1 in. long and the diameter reduced to less than 1/8 in., the melt was slowly cooled and the crystal was allowed to increase to - 1-1/4 in. diam as it was grown. By reducing the diameter of the crystal in this manner, the number of crystals at the liquid-solid interface was decreased until only one crystal remained. Fig. 1 shows a typical pulled copper single crystal. The purity of the starting material and the crystals was determined by the resistance ratio method: where the ratio is taken as R273ok/R4.2ok. The starting material, obtained from American Smelting and Refining Co., was the purest copper available. Most of the pulled copper crystals had much higher resistance ratios than the starting material. The highest ratio obtained to data is 8000. Table I is an example of the data obtained from some of the copper crystals. Note that Crystal No. 126 had a lower resistance ratio than its starting material and this might be due to carbon in the melt. The melt of this crystal was heated 250" to 300°C above the melting point of copper. At this temperature it was observed that copper dissolved appreciable amounts of carbon. The possible presence of carbon at the interface between the liquid and the crystal will result in reducing conditions and negate the slight oxidizing condition required for high purity as discussed below. The possible explanations of the improvement in the copper purity compared to the starting material are: improvement in crystal perfection, segregation, and oxidation of impurities. Of these, the latter seems to be most probable. A study of the etch pits in the pulled crystals showed them to have between 107 and 108 pits per sq cm. The etch procedure used was developed by Love11 and Wernick.10 The resistivity of the purest copper crystal grown was 2 x 10-10 ohm-cm at 4.2oK; from the work of H. G. vanBuren,11 the resistivity due to the dislocations would be approximately 10-l3 ohm-cm, which indicates that. the dislocations in the copper crystals would contribute relatively little to the resistivity of the crystals at this purity level. Segregation does not seem likely as the reason for purification of the material, since the resistivity of the first-to-freeze and the last-to-freeze portions are approximately the same, as was observed on Crystal No. 124. On most of the crystals that were examined, the entire melt was grown into a single crystal. If the

The complete equations of average linear momentum balance for a single-phase fluid in an incompreisible, homogeneous, porous medium are derived. The derivation begins with Euler's equation of motion for a continuum and uses an integral transform recently developed by Slattery. 7 For steady flow of a compressible, Newtonian fluid, the usual equations of motion result. For transient flow, the space-time description of the pressure is determined in the lowest approximation by the telegrapher's equation. From the analysis a new phenomenological coefficient results which connects the viscous traction to the deriv ative of the linear momentum density. The magnitude of this coefficient determines the velocity of sound through the pore structure in this approximation to the pressure field. INTRODUCTION The modification of Darcy's law of momentum balance for steady, single-phase flow through porous media has been discussed for many years. The first modification was suggested by Forcheimerl who added terms of higher order in the velocity. These can be expected to appear because the underlying microscopic equations of momentum balance are themselves nonlinear in the point velocity field. The Reynolds tensor pvv, which represents the convective flux of momentum density, appears in the momentum balance equation. Only in rectilinear flow (parallel stream lines) does the divergence of this tensor vanish. Since the steady flow stream lines in most porous media are not parallel, nonlinear dependence of the pressure gradient on the velocity should naturally appear. This nonlinearity has nothing to do with turbulence in the ordinary sense of random fluctuations in the pressure and velocity fields. It arises simply because the stream lines converge and diverge, even for steady flows. Klinkenberg2 demonstrated that the permeability coefficient in Darcy's law depends on the absolute pressure or, alternatively, on the density field. However, because he neglected inertial terms of the Forcheimer type, his correction coefficient could not be represented by a constant but tended toward a constant as the velocity decreased. Forcheimer's and Klinkenberg's modifications can be combined in a rigorous way to account for both inertia and slip during steady flow. This will be shown in a future paper. The transient change of pressure in porous media has been described by the diffusion equation.3 This form results from eliminating the velocity and density fields from a combination of the equations of motion in the form of Darcy's law, the continuity equation and an equation of state. Fatt4 suggested that the cause of deviations from the prediction of the diffusion equation for pressure transients lies not in the choice of Darcy's law as the equation of motion but on the existence of dead-end pores which might invalidate the averaged equation of continuity. On the other hand, Oroveanu and Pascal5 noted chat the time derivative of the momentum density must be included in the equations of motion since this measures the local rate of change of momentum density. Their differential equation for pressure is the telegrapher's equation (neglecting gravity). However, their form of this equation predicts that the speed of pressure propagation through the pore structure is the same as that through the bulk fluid. M. K. Hubbert6 attempted a derivation of Darcy's law by volume averaging the Navier-Stokes equations. Since these equations represent momentum balance at a point within an open set of points containing the fluid itself, Hubbert's volume averaging cannot lead to tenns involving transfer of momentum between the fluid and the walls of the pores. This has led to the many forms of peg models, in which the usual course of construction includes a peg for the well bore, and the suspension of strings from peg to peg to illustrate the formation correlation between wells, thus developing the usual folds and flexures. Such models proved unsatisfactory for the analysis of fault problems. Consideration was then given to the use of transparent materials. A model of the Dominguez oil field was constructed in 1935, which consisted of a series of glass panels irom well to well on which the formations were shown in color. This model, though serving its purpose at the time, proved to be impractical from the standpoints of cost, breakage hazard, and extreme difficulty in maintenance. The cost of materials was estimated to be approxi-mately $300, and the construction required the services of one man for a period of from 10 to 12 months. Maintenance after actual construction was an additional expense. Consideration was then given to the use of celluloid, and aiter some experimental work it was found that the advantages in its use were: (I) a short construction time, (2) ease of handling the material, (3) sec-tions are easily reworked, (4) low cost. Construction It would be of little value to recount here the difficulties encountered in the building of the first celluloid model. The conclusions drawn, however, suggest the following pro-cedure for those who contemplate the construction of such a model: 1. Determilzatiolz of the Scale.—Accurate geological interpretation requires the use of the same scale horizontally and vertically. It should be emphasized that the limited size of the celluloid sheets (20 by 48 in. maximum dimensions), the area to be studied, the maximum depths to be plotted, and area of possible future development are the controlling factors in adopting a scale to he used. 2. Construction of the Base.—A satisfac-tory base may be constructed by using two pieces of three-ply wood separated by strips of I by 2-in. material. This type of construction prevents warping of the base. The size of the base is determined by the dimensions of the area to be studied plus 5 in. on all sides. A map of the same scale as that adopted for the model, indicating the lines of section to be used, should be fastened to the base. 3. Constructiolt of the Frame (Fig. I).—In the construction of the frame the use of %-in. 0.d. pipe welded in a box shape is suggested, with two horizontal rods on each of the four sides, top and bottom. The diffusion coefficients of zinc in single-crystal zinc and carbon in single-crystal and poly crystalline nickel were measured by means of radioactive tracer techniques both with and without the application of ultrasonic vibrations under conditions such that the temperature of the sample was closely controlled. The results of this investigation indicate no enhancement of diffusion in any of the samples. It is suggested that previously reported enhancement may have been due either solely to temperature increases caused by ultrasonic vibrations or in combination with changes in the boundary conditions. A number of observations have been reported in the literature in which it has been implied or inferred that the application of ultrasonics enhances diffusion (see, for example, Refs. 1-5). The present study was undertaken in an attempt to observe this effect under carefully controlled conditions, particularly with regard to measurement and control of the temperature of the sample. Two different types of systems were studied; these were the self-diffusion of zinc and the diffusion of carbon in nickel. EXPERIMENTAL For diffusion with ultrasonic energy applied, the samples were included as part of a resonant ultrasonic system operating at 58.5 kcps. The ultrasonic generators used were rated at 100 and 250 w and could be tuned over a frequency from 10 to 100 kc. A PZT (lead titanate/lead zirconate) ceramic transducer provided the driving vibration. This system requires no metallurgical joining of the specimen to the acoustical transmission line since the ultrasonic driver and the follow-up section clamp the specimen in position by means of a constant pressure of 50 lb developed by an air cylinder. The ultrasonic driver and follow-up section, both made of titanium, were 4 in. in length from clamping point to the end in contact with the specimen. Using the relationship given by Mason,6 A = V/f, the resonant wavelength, A, in titanium is calculated to be 3.3 in. at a frequency, f, of 58.5 kc, taking the velocity of sound in titanium, V, as 1.95 X 105 in. per sec. The 4-in. driver and follow-up section, therefore, are each 4.0/3.3 =1.21 times the resonant wavelength. Clamping pressure must be applied at stress nodes of the transmission line in order to preserve resonance. Therefore, a specimen length of 0.58 times the wavelength in the specimen was required to place the clamping pressure application points at stress nodes exactly three wavelengths apart. A stress antinode was contained in the center 3 in. of the specimen. A small PZT ceramic disc attached to the follow-up section provided an output voltage proportional to the intensity of the standing wave. This output voltage was monitored on an oscilloscope and the ultrasonic system was tuned to resonance by varying the frequency until the output signal was a maximum amplitude. The amplitude of the output signal was maintained constant throughout the diffusion anneal. A split cylindrical stainless-steel chamber, which was purged with argon prior to and during the runs, was placed around the specimen. The chamber in turn was surrounded by a movable furnace whose temperature could be controlled to 7C. Heat exchangers were used to cool the driver, follow-up section, and ultrasonic transducer. Great care was taken to obtain the true specimen temperature in all cases. Several different methods were tried; the most successful was that in which the thermocouple was held in contact with the midlength of the specimen by means of an asbestos insulating pad and wire straps. In the case of zinc, single-crystal specimens of 99.999 pct purity were used. The samples were 0.25 by 0.25 in. square and of the proper length for resonance, that is 1.1 in. long with the c axis parallel to the long dimension of the specimen for the case of diffusion perpendicular to the c axis and ultrasonic motion parallel to the c axis, and 1.9 in. long with the c axis perpendicular to the long dimension of the specimen for the case of diffusion parallel to the c axis and ultrasonic motion perpendicular to the c axis. In each case, one of the rectangular faces was electroplated with a thin film of zinc containing Zn The constant pressure used to clamp the specimen in place in the ultrasonic system caused some deformation in some of the samples. For these samples the deformation was concentrated in either end of the specimen; thus, for all samples (both zinc and nickel) the center in. was cut from the specimen after the diffusion anneal to be used for sectioning and counting. The nickel single-crystal samples, of 99.999 pct purity, were used in the form of rods 0.25 by 0.187 by 2.07 in. long with the (100) direction parallel to the rod axis. The polycrystalline nickel samples of 99.97 pct purity had an average grain diameter of 0.007 in. and were used in the form of rods 0.25 by 0.125 by 1.87 in. long. The direction of ultrasonic motion was parallel to (100) direction (bar axis) for the single-cqstal samples and parallel to the bar axis for the polycrystalline specimens. A thin film of c14 suspended in methanol was applied to the diffusing face of the specimen. Two specimens were butted together lengthwise for each diffusion anneal to minimize oxidation. After diffusion, a precision lapping device similar to the one described by Goldstein7 and a radiation detector were used to obtain a plot of specific activity vs penetration distance for each specimen. Like most minerals, coal is inherently a demand-limited commodity. The very sedimentary nature of its occurrence implies greater availability potential than demand. But this situation is overridden by economics among fuels, between coals, and within coal blends. Such considerations make coal forecasting a very hazardous profession indeed. THERMAL COAL If one thought that the lead times involved with a mining project were very long, one has obviously not been exposed to the planning process in the electric generation business - a process seriously confounded by shifts in load growth, environmental pressures, capital intensity, security of fuel sourcing, inter-fuel economics, and so on. But as a general rule, the near-term forecasts for thermal coal can reliably be based on a bottom-up, plant-by-plant analysis. Cement plant conversions can also be reasonably estimated next in order of reliability, although they have a much wider spectrum of coal qualities and fuel sources to choose from with a notably higher tolerance for sulfur and ash. Finally, industrial demand can be assembled from the estimates for conversions by pulp/paper plants, chemical plants, etc. The industrial sector is harder to estimate, since it may involve small boilers or dual-fired units. Assessing demand in the Pacific Rim is relatively a straightforward process in the near term because the major importing countries are all located on the Asian continent with either negligible or very minor (yet stable) indigenous coal production, (itself often operated on a subsidized basis). Furthermore, all imports are seaborne. These major importers are Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong with Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia up-and-coming consumers. The suppliers to this market all have substantial reserves to back up decades of exports to these countries. Australia, the US, Canada, South Africa, China, and the USSR dominate the supply side. The second oil-shock of 1979/1980 has convinced the importers that reliance on oil can be expensive and eminently interruptible. Thus, they are determined to diversify away from oil' to nuclear and coal for generating electricity and for coal for other purposes where possible. This trend is seen to continue even in the face of the oil glut worldwide and oil-price reductions in early 1982. But the importers are also convinced that reliance on one coal source and, in particular, one infrastructure route for the coal chain from mine to consumer can be equally expensive and interruptible. Strikes in the US and Australia; excessive demurrage at certain ports; relegation of coal to a lower priority on multiple-use railroads in the USSR and China; and concern over escalation on high-infrastructure or high-freight coal chains are among the risks worrying the importers. As a consequence, Pacific Rim thermal coal purchases are being allocated among supplier nations, between ports, and within each country. An example of Japan's shift away from Australia and toward the US and Canada is shown in the estimates in Table 1. But the confidence of the import estimates deteriorates sharply beyond the plant conversion timetables and construction schedules in the near term. If part of the second generation of coal-fired power plants can handle lower-energy coals, the field of suppliers could widen to accept sizeable tonnages from Alaska, Wyoming, Alberta, or New Zealand resources. These supply sources generally have some infrastructure or freight advantage to compensate for their lower quality and to compete on a delivered energy-unit basis. These also offer diversification in sourcing. And the possibility of coal liquefaction in Japan further widens the sourcing network. A great number of Pacific Rim coal forecasts have been generated, especially for Japanese thermal-coal imports which are expected to grow strongly in the 1980's. Since the Japanese themselves have not yet settled their energy policy, the exact numbers are hard to call. Nevertheless, at 50 million tonnes of imports in 1990, Japan would consume 50-60% of the total Asian thermal coal imports as shown on Tables 2 and 6. The next most important consumers are the "island" nations of Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong (see Tables 3-5). All three are embarking on power plant developments usually with captive unloading facilities, capable of accepting more than 100,000-dwt vessels. Korea, with no-indigenous bituminous coal, is not especially enamoured with US coals, which are deemed too heavily loaded by freight and infrastructure costs -- up to 70% of the delivered price. Thermal coal contracts are presently split to Australia (70%) and to Canada (30%). Korea Electric Power Co. is already considering second-generation boilers capable of burning lower-quality coals than the present standard. Korea does burn domestic anthracite.

The material presented in this paper is an abstract of a thesis submitted by the writer to the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as part requirement for the degree of Master of Science. The investigation was undertaken at the suggestion of Prof. H. 0. Hofman, and it was conducted, under his direction, in the laboratories of the Mining Department of the Institute. The purpose of the work was, first, to study some of the reactions that have been considered as a part of the mechanism of the chloridiz-ing roast, and second, to study the conditions under which nickel oxide and copper oxide may be chloridized. While the production of chlorine gas by various reactions during the chloridizing roast may not be primarily useful in the chloridation of metal oxides and compounds, it nevertheless serves a useful purpose in preventing the dissociation and decomposition of chlorides once they have been formed; for example, the dissociation of cupric chloride into cuprous chloride and chlorine. Therefore it was thought that a study of some chlorine-producing reactions would prove of interest, and the first series of experiments dealt with this phase of the subject. he object of the latter part of the work was to show the possibility of treating heavy sulphide ores, such as those of Sudbury, Ontario, containing much iron and small amounts of copper and nickel, by chloridizing and removing the copper, leaving an iron-nickel oxide product suitable for smelting in the blast furnace for nickel-bearing pig iron. The chloridizing of the copper would, of course, be preceded by a roast for the removal of sulphur, the sulphur oxides being available for the manufacture of sulphuric acid, if under the local conditions this product would be of commercial value. Methods and equipment are subject to study in the Butte district at all times in order that advantage may be taken of any new developments that might serve to increase efficiency and lower costs. Detailed time studies of each operation involved in the entire mining process have been of invaluable assistance in analyzing the individual operation for possible improvement. In other words, the fact that a practice has been in vogue for many years does not exempt it from change provided an easier and cheaper method can be found. Exploration Ore occurs in the Butte district in such manner that structures must be drifted on, no matter how small or unimportant they appear when intersected by a crosscut. Parallel structures also add to the crosscut requirements. This prospecting work, which formerly was done entirely by drifting and crosscutting, is now being supplemented by diamond drilling, to aid in greatly decreasing the amount of waste. In long-shot prospecting, or in second or third class prospecting, where the chances of developing commercial ore are not very great, diamond drilling is of particular value. In prospecting where chances of encountering commercial ore are certain or where crosscuts can be used later for haulage or ventilation, drilling obviously is not applicable. Improvement in drilling machines and bits has contributed greatly to the present success of diamond drilling. For many Years square-set filled stoping was the principal mining method used in the Butte district. Later timbered and untimbered rill stopes were used, also some horizontal cut-and-fill stoping where both Ore and walls were particularly strong. Because of the amount of timber required for square-set stoping, and the relatively low production per stope unit, experiments with horizontal cut-and-fill stopes were begun in Ore bodies of which many had fairly weak walls. It was felt that increase in the speed of the stoping operation, followed closely by filling, to avoid weight being produced by permitting ore and walls to remain insufficiently supported over comparatively long periods, would maintain the walls and backs in safe condition without the use of timber and without ore dilution from wall slough. Cycles of drilling, scraping ore, and filling were devised, which have materially increased stope production and decreased timber consumption, so that both stope labor and supply costs were lowered appreciably without materially affecting grade control. In the larger mines of the district, where wide veins favor this stoping method, half of the total production is now being mined by horizontal cut-and-fill stopes (Fig. I). The increase of the filling rate demanded by the increased stoping rate was the greatest obstacle encountered in the accelerated stoping operations. Finally this problem was solved by replacing the time-honored method of transferring filling waste by small cars, which were hoisted or lowered in the auxiliary shaft, by a transfer
