AT the meeting of the Committee on Engineering A Education of the Institute at the New York meeting last February, it was brought out that the number of men graduating in mining engineering from our colleges at the present time is not sufficient to meet the ordinary needs of the mineral industries. Following the meeting, Samuel S. Wyer, consulting engineer of the Fuel-Power Transportation Educational Foundation of Columbus, Ohio, prepared a pamphlet called "Mining Engineering's Appeal to High School Seniors." Under the auspices of this Foundation the pamphlet is being sent to every high school in the United States. The pamphlet does not in any way paint glowing word pictures of the profession; rather it is a statement of the importance of mining engineering in our present-day civilization, together with the requirements in young men who are looking forward to an engineering career.

The great advantage to he gained by a careful inspection of all materials used in construction, in regard to safety and permanency, and to accuracy of workmanship, has been longer recognized in Great Britain and on the Continent than in America. This is probably owing to the way in which great enterprises have been " rushed" in the United States. Time and cheap first cost, in too many instances, have been considered of more importance than absolute safety and durability; the structures being afterwards strengthened if this was found necessary. This has been most noticeable in railroads built through " new " country, where the object in view has been to reach the terminal point and get to work. THE developments in construction and operation of the basic open-hearth furnace that have taken place in recent years have placed new emphasis on the vital influence played by regulation and control of the combustion system in both furnace production and furnace life. The several factors influencing flame development, such as regulation of fuel supply, air supply, air preheat, furnace draft, and furnace reversal, must be controlled closely if successful furnace performance is to be accomplished. Rugged instrumentation of distinctive design is required to supply dependable information concerning operating conditions, which is requisite to proper regulation of combustion. This chapter attempts to give a practical discussion of the various features of open-hearth practice and instrumentation related to the efficient heating of the furnace, control of temperature, and protection of the furnace structure from accidental overheating. The appended references will be helpful to readers wanting a more detailed treatment of individual topics. OPEN-HEARTH FUELS The most important open-hearth fuels are listed in Table 4-1 together with their compositions and other data useful for combustion calculations. A detailed discussion of open-hearth fuels is not attempted here, but certain factors peculiar to their application to this type of process are briefly indicated on the following pages. Very often an open-hearth shop is forced by economic factors to use a fuel to which its furnaces are not very well adapted, because the general fuel-allocation scheme for the works as a whole seems to demand it. Often a variable marginal supply of coke-oven gas or tar must be consumed by the open hearth, together with another fuel such as producer gas, natural gas, or oil, to fill out total requirements. Prof. H. S. Munroe, New York City : In his reference to cop per-dressing at Lake Superior, p. 325, Mr. Douglas says that " the .. concentration .. . has been carried out with greatest financial economy,... I do not say with the greatest economy of min eral." And again, on p. 344, referring to the same, " it would not pay to reduce the quantity treated, and increase hand-labor, in order to save a few hundredths of one per cent. of copper." Mr. Douglas probably has in mind the fact that the copper lost is all included copper, locked op in grains of sand. To save this, the rock must be crushed finer. If the mesh of the stamp-screens be reduced, the stamps will crush less; and thus we shall have to reduce the quantity treated in the mill per day, while the labor re mains the same per day, or is increased per ton, as he says. Submitting to the loss of copper, however, is not the only solution of the difficulty. A large quantity of rich sand is now collected by the jigs, and it would be easy to save so much of this material that the escaping sands would be quite poor. What is wanted at Lake Superior, and at many dressing-works in this country, is an efficient crushing-machine to treat the sands thus collected. Abroad, we have the Heberle machine and the Schranz mill for this purpose, the latter being the more successful. The Heberle grinder was tried at the Calumet and Hecla mill for crush ing these rich sands, with what success I do not know. STATISTICAL methods are becoming increasingly important for inter-preting routine reports, or for analyzing special test data in industrial plants, such as steel plants. They have already become practically a necessity to the plant metallurgist. A paper by Chancellor,1 written in 1933, gives many examples of the benefits the plant metallurgist can derive from the use of these methods. The present paper discusses applications of importance to many others who must analyze reports in the steel plant, as well as other examples of interest to metallurgists. Statistical Methods Logically Suited to Plant Problems.-Statistical methods are not new as a branch of mathematics. Until comparatively recently, however, practical applications were confined mainly to actuarial science, biology, and economics; fields in which an observed result is obviously influenced (and often determined) by a complicated set of vari-ables more or less constantly tending to affect it. As pointed out by Daeves, 2 a decade or more ago, problems in industry are basically similar to those in these other fields in that a given result is at least partly due to that chance combination of causes happening to be present at the time. When trying to do the same thing repeatedly, constant results are never attained; they vary about the desired result with more or less well defined mathematical regularity. Such a condition arises out of the great number of factors tending to affect the final result. If statistical methods are so valuable to the biologist or economist, why then should they not also be of great value to plant managers and engineers, and to all who must interpret reports from various sources in the industrial plant? Within the last few years, industry has become conscious of this situation, and the use of these methods has been rapidly expanding in such plants. ?

The writer has devoted a number of years to practical operations and to the study of geology in the oil fields. In consequence, he has been brought to investigate the theories advanced to account for the accumulation of oil and gas in commercial deposits. It is the result of these investigations and his personal conclusions that he wishes to sum up in this paper. The writer is an advocate of the organic origin of petroleum found in pools. He has been led to believe that the present theories of oil and gas accumulations are incomplete and, in certain respects, incorrect, although they may embody certain elements of truth; that the forces that are called upon to explain the movement are only secondary forces in the process, and insufficient, by themselves, to cause this movement; and that the phenomenon of accumulation is of much larger order than heretofore admitted and bears an intimate relation with the general as well as with the local deformations of the crust and is a direct consequence and a mechanical effect of these deformations to which the term " diastrophie " has been applied. As a complement to this theory, the writer offers a new interpretation of the "rock pressure" and of the mechanism of the "sealing up" of this pressure in oil and gas pools. The Anticlinal Theory The theory most generally accepted to account for the accumulation of hydrocarbons in commercial deposits is the anticlinal or structural theory. This theory, the principles of which have been laid down by I. C. White, Orton, Winehell and others, and which has since been modified and perfected, is too well known to need a detailed statement. ADMIRALTY nickel is a new corrosion-resisting and heat-resisting white metal alloy composed of 70 per cent. copper, 29 per cent. nickel and 1 per cent. tin. It has been given the trade name "Adnic." In 1924, Wm. B. Price1 described this alloy and its successful use as a diaphragm metal. The physical properties of Adnic at ordinary and elevated temperatures were given in Mining & Metallury.2 A patent3 was granted on Adnic, April 28, 1925. Work was first started on this alloy during December, 1921. An investigation of the patent situation in this country and abroad, and also a search of the literature, did not reveal any work on the ternary diagram, copper-nickel-tin; and the only wrought copper-nickel-tin alloy found was that known as "Newloy," composed of copper, 64 per cent.; nickel, 35 per cent.; tin, 1 per cent. This was being manufactured and sold by Wm. Gallimore & Sons, Ltd., Sheffield, England, for unplated spoon and fork stock, and first came to our attention in January, 1922. The preliminary work in connection with the development of Adnic was started by casting four binary copper-nickel alloys of the compositions shown in Table 1. Various amounts of tin were added to each of these mixtures, to produce the series of ternary copper-nickel-tin alloys also given in Table 1. A 200-gm. sample of each of these was cast by melting in a clay graphite crucible and allowing the melt to slowly cool with the furnace. A longitudinal section from each of these castings was polished and etched for examination. There is more information contained in a screen analysis than is ordinarily recognized, and there is an increasing need for methods of making this additional information easily available. As more comprehensive studies of crushing and grinding are made, and as the possibilities of decreased expense and increased extraction through a closer control of grinding are explored, methods of interpreting screen analyses assume an importance which they have not had heretofore. The information commonly desired, which can be determined from a complete and carefully made screen analysis, includes: (1) the size distribution of the material passing the finest screen, (2) the presence of a hard grinding fraction, (3) the location of natural grain sizes, (4) the presence of different materials with markedly different grinding characteristics, (5) the presence and amount of finely divided material such as clay, which is merely unlocked in grinding, and (6) the total surface area of the ground product. It is necessary to know the fundamental law of size distribution of a homogeneous material in order to correctly resolve a screen-analysis curve, and to understand the variations and anomalies that a sample may exhibit when compared with the ideal curve. This fundamental law was developed by Gaudin,1 who showed that when the logarithm of the per cent weight retained on any screen and passing the next larger screen in the Tyler standard screen scale was plotted against the logarithm of the screen aperture the resulting curve for the finer sizes of a homogeneous crusher or grinding-mill product would be a straight line. The province of Otago consists, roughly speaking, of the southern half of the South Island* of New Zealand. On three sides it is washed by the Pacific Ocean and on the north it abuts against Westland and Canterbury. It covers an area of over 20,000 square miles, and for the most part has an extremely broken surface; the narrow plains of the sea-board are bounded by the rounded foothills which in turn are overlooked by range after range of the snowy summits whose varied beauty has made the island known as the Switzerland of the southern hemisphere. The gold-fields are confined to the quartzose schists which, in a broad band, 70 to 75 miles wide, cross the district, extending in a northwesterly direction from the shore of the western ocean into the northern provinces. These quartzose schists are the characteristic rocks of Otago, and to their curious structure are due the interesting differences exhibited by the mining districts in the modes of occurrence of the gold. These rocks, which are almost unbroken over their full extent, have been divided by the Provincial Geologist, F. W. Hutton, into two series of beds, named respectively the Wanaka and Kakanui formations. The only reason given for this division is the desire " to divide such an enormous thickness of rocks in order that the map might display somewhat of the geological structure of the district." As Hutton and others have pointed out, there is in fact no dividing line. The changes noticeable in the ascending series of schists are very gradual, and are due to the slowly decreasing effects of metamorphism. Hutton estimates the thickness of the Wanaka series at as much as 50,000 feet, and the

RittingeR's law of the energy expended in crushing is, as roughly stated by Profcssor Richards,' that the work of crushing is proportional to the reduction in diameter; or, as I have more fully expressed it: "The work done in crushing is proportional to the surface exposed by the operation; or, better expressed for this purpose, the work done on a given mass of rock is proportional to the reciprocal of the diameter of the final product—assuming that all the mass has been reduced to one exact sine, which is only theoretically possible."² Kick's law is stated by H. Stadler as follows :3 "The energy required for producing analogous changes of configuration of geometrically similar bodies of equal technological state varies as the volumes or weights of these bodies." In other words, the energy expended is proportional to the volume reduction, instead of the diameter reduction. That these two laws would give widely different results may be shown by a simple imaginary case. A ton of 16-in. cubes is broken to 1-in. cubes at the first operation, and these are broken to 1/16. cubes at a second operation. Since the first operation produces only one-sixteenth as much new surface as the second, the ratio of energy expended in the two operations would be by Rittinger's law as 1 to 16. By Kick's law, since the volume-reduction ratio is the same in both cases, the ratio of energy would be 1 to 1. During 1965, a new stoping method was developed at the Bunker Hill Mine at Kellogg, Idaho to enable the profitable mining of a large low-grade zinc orebody. This method, called the Bunker Hill pillar system, incorporates the use of the air-powered Atlas Copco T2GH or CAVO 310 as the prime production component. The method and equipment proved highly successful and was the first step in mechanizing what had been a classic example of a square-set and horizontal cut-and-fill operation. Since that time there has been a realization that the small rubber-tired type of loader could be effectively used to advantage in increasing productivity and decreasing costs in many different stoping and development applications throughout the mine. The net result since 1967 has been that a large and increasing portion of the mine production and an increasing share of the development is being done with small rubber-tired loaders. Presently, ten Atlas Copco T2GH and six CAVO 310 air-operated loaders are in use, having replaced the time-honored slusher which was first introduced into the Bunker Hill Mine in about 1898 in the form of a slip scraper. The recent advent of diesel powered loaders in the one yard size range has in 1970 further accelerated the trend toward rubber-tired mobile equipment at the Bunker Hill Mine. Although The Bunker Hill Company is using small diesel loaders of several different types and manufactures for inclines, declines and level development and will undoubtedly find stoping applications for this equipment, .the bulk of this paper will be confined to the use of the air-operated loader, leaving the diesel equipment to a future presentation. During the last decade the petroleum refinery engineer has made great progress in achieving a better understanding of the physical behavior of hydrocarbon mixtures, with particular reference to their pressure-temperature-volume relationships, the mechanism of the evaporation of liquids, the condensation of vapors, including the changes in composition, and the heat effects accompanying them. With the new insight into the mechanism of movement of oil and gas through the formations in which they occur, achieved by the production engineer, it is clear that the latter will need to utilize in the solution of his own problems much of the information outlined above. It is the purpose of this paper to outline the portions of that information that seem most certain to prove of importance in production work. Properties of Pure Hydrocarbons While it is true that petroleum always consists of highly complex mixtures of hydrocarbons, none the less understanding of the behavior of the mixture must be based upon a knowledge of the properties of the pure components. However, in view of the tremendous number of hydrocarbons existing in petroleum, the determination and formulation of the properties of all of them would seem a discouraging task. The difficulty of the situation is increased by the undoubted facts that the overwhelming majority of chemical individuals in petroleum have never been isolated as pure compounds, none of their physical properties have been determined and even their chemical constitution is unknown. The situation would be hopeless were it not for the fact that certain extraordinary correlations of important properties of various hydrocarbons have been discovered which make it possible to predict those properties for a given chemical individual on the basis of a very limited characterization of it. DURING the past 4 or 5 years, much has been added to the detailed geologic knowledge of the Mesabi Range. This has not been in the direction of discovery of any new fundamental facts, but of detailed study, subdivision and correlation of different parts of the whole formation and of individual orebodies. Prior to this time, mining engineers in the district were so engaged with the commercial interests of exploring and developing orebodies that close geologic study and subdivision was done in only a few instances. The demand for refinements of work in this direction has caused caused extensive structural subdivision and correlation to he done in all exploration work during the past 4 years by the engineers of the Oliver Iron Mining Co. Such work has become a commercial necessity rather than a scientific refinement, and at the present time is being extended to all parts of the Range. In the summer of 1914, the author of this paper wrote a series of articles on the orebodies and special features of the Mesabi Range, which was published in the Engineering and Mining Journal, issues of July 17 to Aug. 7, 1915. Since that time studies of subdivision of the iron-formation have been extended considerably. The principle feature of this paper is the presentation of the subdivisions of the iron-formation. To this is added a discussion of the relations of the orebodies to the gentle folding and fracturing of the formation, and special features of the Range. The outline will he as follows: I. General geology. II. Subdivision of Biwabik iron-formation. III. Relation of orebodies to folding and fracturing of the iron-formation. IV. Special features. Acknowledgment is due to W. J. A study of the structures arising from the decomposition of the ß solid solutions in the Cu-Zn and the Cu-A1 systems is of peculiar interest in the study of the mechanism of precipitation from solid solutions. It is possible in these alloys, by varying the composition within the ß field, to precipitate from the same basic lattice phases having different lattice structures. It has been rather generally assumed heretofore that the type of structure originating from the decomposition of a solid solution— the Widmanstätten structure—-is determined by the lattice structure of the parent solid solution alone. In the first paper of this series1 evidence was advanced which threw doubt upon this hypothesis; but definite proof of the correctness or incorrectness of the hypothesis should be forthcoming from a study of these alloys, for if the structures originating, for example, from the precipitation of the a phase from ß and of the ? phase from the ß in the Cu-Zn system should be shown to be crystallographically different, the hypothesis would necessarily be held as definitely disproved. Furthermore, the newer proposal enunciated in the first paper of this series—that the origin of the Widmanstätten structure lies in a cooperation between the lattice of the parent solid solution and that of the precipitate-—which at present seems the only a1ternative hypothesis, would in such an event be given added weight. The work here reported shows that the Widmanstätten structures originating in the precipitation of the a phase from the ß and in the precipit'at.ion of the y phase from the y in the Cu-Zn system are indeed crystallographically different; and incidentally presents some new descriptive information on the Widmanstätten structure from a more general point, of view.

The Parral area, a part of the Parral mining district of Southern Chihuahua, is situated in and near the City of Parral, with the most important mine of the district, La Prieta, lying within the city limits. The famous Veta Colorado and Palmilla veins near Villa Escobedo or Minas Nuevas are a few kilometers to the northeast (see Fig. 1). The chief metals produced are silver, lead and zinc, with some copper and gold. This area was one of the earliest to produce metal in Mexico, according to records at Parral, which show that mining started in 1632. In near-by Santa Barbara, however, mining had begun 85 years earlier. It is said that when silver was discovered in the Veta Colorado, the Santa Barbara gold deposits, at that time nearly exhausted, were immediately abandoned for the more profitable silver mines at Minas Nuevas (New Mines) During the post-revolutionary period, 1923-1928, the author made many trips to the Parral district to do mine examination work for several units of the American Smelting and Refining Co. This paper is an abstract of some of the geologic data collected, together with the results of a microscopic study of the ores and rocks—the latter investigation made at the University of Minnesota—and is intended to supplement one recently published. Topography The Parral district lies in the eastern foothills belt of the Sierra Madre Oeste. The area is about evenly divided between fairly flat to rolling plains and mesas on the south and rounded hills to rough precipitous slopes on the west and north. The relief is approximately 550 m. (1800 ft.). The areas of intrusive monzonite and Jurassic (?) sedimentary rocks give rise to a topography of low rounded hills and relatively flat valleys; as contrasted with the volcanics, with their alternating beds of soft

Strategically situated in almost the heart of the leading fertilizer-consuming area of the United States, Tennessee long has ranked second only to Florida as a phosphate-producing state. Since 1932 its share of the national output of phosphate rock has increased steadily, and in 1937 its production mounted to an all-time record. More significant even than the increase in tonnage are the forward strides in technology. The Tennessee Valley Authority's research program has led to quasicommer-cia1 operations using hydroelectric power to manufacture concentrated phosphatic fertilizer that is used to further the farmer education program designed to streamline the fertilizer business and halt the appalling waste of farm land by soil erosion. Even more stimulating to chemically minded imaginations is the production of elemental phosphorus by a private company that not only has succeeded in extracting it from the phosphate rock in electric furnaces but actually has contrived to capture it and to transport it safely in tank cars. New values have been created for low-grade phosphate deposits, and the economic life of reserves has been lengthened while the waste of former years goes back into the mills for recovery of its values by modernized methods. Tennessee's phosphate-mining industry dates from the discovery of blue rock in Lewis County in December 1893. Its known reserves are of the order of 101,500,000 tons, which compares with the production of 825,099 tons in 1937; that is, 21 per cent of the phosphate-rock output of the whole nation. The total output reported from 1894 until July 1. 1938, was approximately 19,000,000 tons. Offcial estimates of reserves are overly conservative and evidence submitted before a joint Congressional committee in November 1938 places "probable" reserves at more than 6,000,000,000 tons.

The protaxis of the North American continent consists, as is well known, of a large V-shaped area of Archæan rocks, which lie for the most part in the Dominion of Canada, and occupy an area of not less than 2,031,000 square miles. The western limit of this area extends from 'Lake Superior in a northwesterly direction to the Arctic Ocean, the southern is found along the Lower St. Lawrence as far as Labrador. A minor area, spoken of as the Adirondack region of northern New York, has a somewhat broken connection with the main body in a narrow band of igneous rock, which crosses the Upper St. Lawrence where it leaves Lake Ontario. The ancient crystallines are also presumably beneath all the later sediments, hut the above brief description outlines their principal exposures. This great rock-complex consists, for the most part, of a series of gneisses, which present great variations in both structure and composition. In certain sections areas of gneisses of the general composition of granite, and remarkably uniform in character, prevail. They consist largely, if not exclusively, of crystalline rocks in which a banding or foliation has been induced by pressure. These rocks constitute the basal member of the Laurentian system, and by later writers have been referred to as the Ottawa gneiss. In other and quite extended areas, gneisses, regarded by many as composed of altered sediments, are associated with crystalline limestones, quartzites, and much injected igneous matter. To this series the term Grenville has been applied. Both of these series of gneisses are penetrated by various igneous masses, of which the most important are great intrusioiis of several members of the gabbro family, such as anortho-sites, norites, pyroxenites, and gabbros proper; the whole form-

SINCE the discovery of von Laue, that a crystal forms a natural grating for X-rays, our knowledge of the structure of solids has gone forward with rapid strides. This progress is not only of purely scientific interest, but has also yielded direct technological results. One of the most valuable results is the broadening of our knowledge of the structure of pure metals and alloys. To promote these studies it is often desirable to have at our disposal pieces of metal consisting of one single crystal. As is so often the case in the natural sciences, we obtain the best results by making our earliest experiments on pure, simple materials and avoiding unnecessary complications. The Cryogen Laboratory at Leyden followed this method with much success, because the work was done at such low temperatures that the heat movement of the atoms was almost absent. Similarly we can simplify the studies of metals by leaving out of consideration the influence of the grain boundaries and the mutual influence of the crystals by using unicrystalline instead of polycrystalline metal. Methods of making single crystals have been scientifically studied during the past few years. Some methods were already known in the arts, but these have been improved and new methods have been developed. STRATEGICALLY situated in almost the heart of the leading fertilizer- consuming area of the United States, Tennessee long has ranked second only to Florida as a phosphate-producing state. Since 1932 its share of the national output of phosphate rock has increased steadily, and in 1937 its production mounted to an all-time record. More significant even than the increase in tonnage are the forward strides in technology. The Tennessee Valley Authority's research program has led to quasicommercial operations using hydroelectric power to manufacture concentrated phosphatic fertilizer that is used to further the farmer education program designed to streamline the fertilizer business and halt the appalling waste of farm land by soil erosion. Even more stimulating to chemically minded imaginations is the production of elemental phosphorus by a private company that not only has succeeded in extracting it from the phosphate rock in electric furnaces but actually has contrived to capture it and to transport it safely in tank cars. New values have been created for low-grade phosphate deposits, and the economic life of reserves has been lengthened while the waste of former years goes back into the mills for recovery of its values by modernized methods. Tennessee's phosphate-mining industry dates from the discovery of blue rock in-lewis County in December 1893. Its known reserves are of the order of 101,500,000 tons, which compares with the production of 825,099 tons in 1937; that is, 21 per cent of the phosphate-rock output of the whole nation. The total output reported from 1894 until July 1, 1938, was approximately 19,000,000 tons. Official estimates of reserves are overly conservative and evidence submitted before a joint Congressional committee in November 1938 places "probable" reserves at more than 6,000,000,000 tons.
