THE American oil 'industry has reached the critical stage where the demand exceeds the supply with no hope of permanently bettering the situation through the development of new fields in the United States. Remedies may be sought along three lines: 1. Securing a foreign source of supply. 2. Curtailment of the use of oil and its derivatives. 3. Improvement in methods of recovery (including the recovery of shale oil), refining, and utilization. The oil companies with proper government support will push the acquiring of foreign territory; the price of oil and oil products will enforce a curtailment in use; it remains for the producers and refiners to brings about improvements and economy in recovery, transportation and refining; the general public must be instructed in utilization. The solution of the problem, therefore, rests largely in the hands of the technologists of the industry -the drillers, engineers, geologists, chemists, etc. Only through an exchange of the ideas of the individuals who are conducting the industry will its technology be advanced. , Among the agencies at work to bring about this result are the United States Bureau of Mines, the American Petroleum Institute, and the A. I. M. E. The Bureau of Mines has a trained staff of experts, maintains experiment stations and a field force of technologists, and issues many technical papers helpful to the industry. The Petroleum Institute is a clearing house for useful statistics and is now. organizing a research division under the able direction of Doctor Manning, but its principal field of activities is in the realm of co¬ordinating ?the financial and commercial activities of the` oil' companies.' It remains for the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to organize the individual technologists of the industry and provide them with means of exchanging and disseminating ideas through meetings and publications. It is the aim of the Petroleum Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to foster this exchange of ideas among oil men by enlarging the membership of the Institute among the field and office technical forces of the oil companies and thus arouse their interest in the vital problems of the oil business.

For elevated temperature-constant load creep tests of a solid solution alloys, the creep strain is a function of a temperature-compensated time parameter 0 = je H/RT dt. The activation energy H is equal to o constant of about 36,000 cal per mol. The substructures resulting from a given creep stress condition are functions of the creep strain independent of temperature. Each new creep stress gives a new unique set of grain substructures; this is one of the factors responsible for the failure of the mechanical equation of state for creep. IN this report an attempt is made to correlate the creep properties of dilute a: solid solutions in aluminum with the subgrain structures that are developed during creep. The possibilities of such correlations have already been suggested by Wood et al. and others1-" who demonstrated that the subgrain structures are functions of the creep stress, creep strain, rate of creep, and temperature. Investigations by Sherby and Dorn' have shown that the creep strain, E, at constant load for dilute a solid solutions of aluminum is given by the functional relationship: e = f(8,u,) [1] where: 0 equals te-AH/RT = temperature-compensated time; t, time; AH, activation energy, - 35,800 cal per mol; R, gas constant; T, absolute temperature, above 400°K; and u,, initial creep stress. Consequently, it was anticipated that the subgrain structure that develops during a constant load creep test should also correlate with any two of the three significant variables C, 8, and Another possible correlation between the subgrain structure and the creep variables is obtained by differentiating Eq. 1 with respect to time, whence the creep rate, 2, becomes: = (2L) (2) =f (, u,) e-AHRT [2] or: e = F (c e H/RT, 0) [3] For the minimum creep rate, ;,, 8 is solely a function of U, as revealed by Eq. 1. Consequently, at the minimum creep rate Eq. 3 reduces to: = F (eAH/RT) [41 Correlations between U, and i, eAH/RT were found valid for solid solution alloys of aluminum where AH was a constant of about 35,800 cal per mol. The parameter ;, eH/RT is identical to the Zener-Hollo-mon parameter8," used by them in evaluating the tensile properties of copper and other metals. Eq. 4 suggests that the subgrain structure developed during secondary creep might be correlatable with either of the two variables 2, e H/RT or u,. Some of the solid solution aluminum alloys which were discussed in an earlier report' were also used in the present investigation. Sheets of these alloys were homogenized, cold rolled from 0.100 to 0.070 in. in thickness and then recrystallized to about the same grain size. Their chemical composition and grain size are recorded in Table I. Creep specimens were selected with their tensile axes in the rolling direction. The details for creep testing have been described10 and will not be repeated here. All creep tests were performed under constant load conditions. Experimental Results and Discussion Metallographic Structure of Creep Specimens: In order to obtain a preliminary concept of creep on the metallographic structure of high purity aluminum, the various ruptured specimens previously used to obtain the creep data for pure aluminum were polished and etched electrolytically in a dilute solution of fluoroboric acid. Oblique illumination was used to reveal the substructures which, for convenience, are shown in correlation with the vs. ;, eH/RT curve in Fig. 1. It is necessary to emphasize that the data for the curve refer to the various secondary stages of creep whereas the micrographs refer to the fractured creep specimens. Nevertheless a regular and systematic correlation is observed between E, eAH/RT (or the creep stress) and the micro-structure at fracture. UNFORTUNATE evasions of metals specifications recently brought to public attention through news items and editorials have caused executives of at least two great corporations to set up defensive procedures and to re¬affirm the patriotic purpose and conscientious effort of their plants in this battle of production. Whatever the exact conditions affecting these cases, in which the public interest has been safe-guarded by vigorous action, my reaction to such offenses in general is a feeling that they arise from the pressure and limitations that afflict our overextended war effort and that inevitably there will be more of them, doubtless more and more expertly conceived and less and less subject to detection as simple faked, or substituted analyses or tests. To the ladies, who doubtless are already beginning to ac¬quire a sense of painful resignation to a dry technical talk, may I say that the cookbook is full of specifications which customarily are varied within rather wide limits but it is generally recognized that the proof of the pudding is in the eating without regard to its exact composition or some scientific evaluation of its texture.

The device to which I desire to call the attention of the members of the Institute consists of a water-tight caisson, which is connected By a stuffing-box with the tube to be laid, and the caisson is pushed forward with hydraulic jacks set against the end of the tube. The tube is of hard white iron, cast in chills in segments. These segments are carried from shore through the tube itself, in which a track is laid as the work progresses, and the segments are bolted together in the caisson, where there is ample room to work and proper appliances for handling heavy weights. As each segment is bolted on, the jacks are set against its forward end, and when the whole ring is complete, the caisson is pushed forward by the jacks, a trench having been dredged out in front of it, or, in very loose ground, jets of water under a heavy pressure can be thrown out to loosen the ground in front of the caisson. The direction in which the caisson is pushed is completely under control, and both the caisson and the tube are loaded to the amount necessary to overcome their buoyancy. I understand that Mr. H. H. Hall, of New York, the inventor, is negotiating for the construction of a 16-foot tunnel of this kind across the Straits of' Northumberland, between Prince Edward Island and the main-land, and for tunnels in several other places. 4 One of the most interesting uses of this system is in laying water mains out into lakes. Of all the military services, the Signal Corps is the most concerned with piezoelectric minerals because of its function as a supply service to the strategic and tactical military forces. Consequently this paper is written from the point of view of one associated with that organization. The Signal Corps is responsible for the research, development, and supply of communications, radar, and components to the using services of the Department of the Army and to some extent the Other branches of the National Defense Department. Their work therefore includes the study of the sources* characteristics, and application of quartz and other piezoelectric materials. These materials have become a vital consideration in strategic planning and are essential for efficient tactical operation by all the Armed Forces. The Signal Corps at the beginning of world War 11 Was respon-sible for both Army Ground and Air Force electronic equipment. Since that time this Army service organization has probably done more in the development of frequency control devices using piezoelectric materials than any other group. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, Minerals yearbook of 1945, shows that during the four war years, 1942 through 1945, 9,598,-410 Ib of quartz crystal were imported for all uses and of this total, 5,168,000 lb were consumed to produce 78,320,-000 crystal units for electronic application. Other government records confirm these data which conclusively show that approximately 53 pct of the crystalline quartz imported was consumed in the production of electronically applied quartz crystal units. It may be assumed that some effort was made to maintain a stockpile over demands for all purposes. and this would mean that the actual percentage of quartz used electronically was considerably over the 53 pct figure. These data only emphasize that electronic application of crystalline quartz was the greatest requirement, and per- haps the actual value in this application to national defense is many times greater in importance than is apparent on first inspection. Current electronic research and development programs of the Armed Forces are planned around the fundamental use of piezoelectric minerals for frequency control and this at present, at least, means quartz. Definition and Early Development The word piezoelectricity is formed from combination of the Greek word "piezein". meaning "to press," and "electricity." It is that property shown by numerous crystalline substances whereby electrical charges of equal and opposite value are produced on certain surfaces when the crystal is subjected to mechanical stress. It appears to be intimately associated with the better known property, pyro-electricity and in fact, the two may be manifestations of the same phenomeuon. This property was discovered by Pierre and Jacques Curie in quartz, tourmaline, and other minerals in 1880 while studying the symmetry of crystals. The converse effect, that is, mechanical strain in the crystal when placed in an electrical field, was predicted by the French physicist, G. Lippman, in 1881, and verified by the Curies almost immediately. As has been the case with many discoveries of similar character in the basic sciences, not much attention was paid to this property for man)- years except as an entertaining curiosity. Between 1890 and 1892 a series of papers was published by W. voigt in which the theoretical physical properties were put into mathematical form. The first practical application of piezoelectricity occurred during World War I when professor P. Langevin of France used quartz mosaics to produce underwater sound waves. The same mosaics were used to pick up the sound reflections from submerged objects which were in turn, amplified by electronic means and used to determine the distances to such objects. This device was intended for use as a submarine detector but development was not completed in time for war service although it was used later for determining ocean depths. About the same time, A. M. Nicholson, of Bell Telephone Laboratories, developed microphones and phonograph pickups using Rochelle salt crystals. A major step in the application of piezoelectric quartz came in 1921, when professor W. G. Cady, of wesleyan university, showed that a radio oscillator could be controlled by a quartz crystal; from that date, this use of quartz has increased steadily, reaching its peak in world war 11 as is shown by the figures previously given. Essentially all American electronic equipment for communication, navigation, and radar, utilized quartz crystals for the exacting frequency control required. Crystalline Minerals with piezoelectric Properties QUARTZ Hundreds of piezoelectric crystalline materials are known, most of which are water soluble. Of these, quartz appears to be without a peer for electronic frequency control. Unfortunately, the quartz must be of superior quality. It must be free of mechanical flaws, essen-tially optically clear, free of both Brazil and Dauphiné twinning and must be, for average uses, over 100 g in weight. Because of these stringent requirements, raw quartz of the quality desired is of rare occurrence. In addition to quartz, several other naturally occurring crystalline materials are known to have the piezoelectric property and could perhaps be substituted for quartz in some applications. These

An underground excavation project usually is a highly organized complex of different but interrelated construction activities. It is the whole effort, including the necessary tools, which will be referred to as the System. Tunnel-driving and shaft-sinking operations are among the most systematic of construction efforts. Systems are not new in the performance of construction. It is the Systems Concept which seems only recently to have been discovered and made the subject of much study and discussion. HISTORICAL From the seventeenth century, when explosives were first utilized for rock excavation, until the successful application of the rotary-head continuous tunneler in this decade, the cyclical drill-blast-muck-support method has been standard tunnel-driving procedure throughout the world. Whatever improvements occurred were the result of development of better tools for performing the various operations of the cycle. The electric locomotive replaced the mule and permitted the use of larger muck cars. The steam drill, which ended the day of the double jack, was itself quickly made obsolete when compressed air replaced steam as the source of drilling energy. Power shovels were introduced to save the time and money involved in the hand-loading of excavated materials. A cubic yard of rock tunnel muck can be excavated today for just half the man-hours of labor required in 1948. Developments over 20 years which cumulatively have resulted in this economy include: drifter drills mounted on hydraulically controlled booms and positioners; tungsten-car- bide-tipped bits; long feed shells on the drifters, making it possible to drill the full depth of a round without changing steel; better designed,

REJUVENATED is an apt word to apply to Chino, Kennecott's big open-pit mine at Santa Rita, New Mexico. Back in 1923 Chino was merged with Ray by an exchange of shares, and in 1926 the Ray-Chino combination was taken over by Nevada Consolidated through an issue of bonds that were traded for the Ray and Chino assets. Subsequently, of course, the whole package was acquired by the Kennecott Copper Corporation. On the basis of the terms of the Ray-Chino-Nevada exchanges, Chino was rated third in value, something less than thirty per cent of the total. In 1955 the appraisal would doubtless be forty per cent or more. But it is not only vis-a-vis Ray and Nevada that Chino has blossomed out. At the end of 1931, Chino ranked seventh among the Porphyries in point of output; whereas by the end of 1954 it was fifth,. having passed both Inspiration and Nevada Consolidated. Sharp curtailment in production in 1932-33-34 and total suspension in the two years following (see Fig. 21) found the property in a somewhat parlous position. However, the engineers had not been idle; they had been planning for the future, and in 1937 a far-reaching program of rejuvenation was launched. During the ensuing five years, capital expenditures totaled more than $8,500,000. Among the projects undertaken were the following: (1) Mine-Purchase of larger and better equipment for drilling, loading, and transporting the ore. (2) Mine-Beginning of the first systematic project to leach and recover copper in the waste dumps at the mine.

INTRODUCTORY. THE presentation to the Institute, eight years ago, of the paper of Pošepny on " The Genesis of Ore-Deposits " has borne fruit in much fresh: investigation, as is evidenced, for example, by the group of very valuable papers, by distinguished members" of the United States Geological Survey, read at the Washington meeting-discussions of general principles particularly suggestive to those who are engaged in mining. Pošepny, in the discussion of his famous treatise, said that the present writer seemed to look at every new conception in ore-deposition" from the sole standpoint of its immediate usefulness in mining."* Protesting mildly against " sole " and "immediate," I accept the impeachment. It calls for no defence. THE DEVELOPMENT OF RECENT THEORIES. Given the idea of an underground water-circulation as the chief factor in the deposition of ore, the next step in the inquiry as to the genesis of such deposits is, the endeavor to determine which particular part of the general water-circulation is responsible for the results. Around this question have centered the controversies of a generation, and to these controversies we owe the gradual clarification of our ideas upon the processes of ore-formation. It is unnecessary to sketch here their progress from Werner to Le Conte, who combated in 1883 the extreme views of the lateral-seeretionists, and in 1893 opposed the narrow interpretation of the ascensionist-theory. The generally accepted opinions of to-day are a well-deserved tribute to his philosophic discrimination. The piece of spiegeleisen, the analysis of which is given below, was collected by my father, together with various other specimens, while he was manager of the Glendon Iron Works. It bears a label stating that it was taken from a building in the town of Newton, New Jersey, erected in 1765 and torn down in 1863. The building belonged, in 1863, to T. N. McCarter, Esq. The label is in the hand-writing of Mr. McCarter, now deceased, well known as a member of the bar of northern New Jersey. The specimen was, no doubt, given by him to illy father, with whom he had business in 1863 and 1864. It is now in the metallurgical collection of Lehigh University. I know nothing further as to the history of the specimen, but there is no reasonable doubt that it was made from ore from the Andover mine, at the old charcoal-furnace which once stood at the village of Andover, about 5 miles south of Newton, on the Sussex railroad. It was probably broken from one end of a bearer over an open fire-place, is about 6 in. wide by 2.5 in. thick, has been cast in open sand and shows the charcteristic fracture of spiegeleisen rather low in manganese, as shown in Table I. [Secretary's Note.—At the Spokane meeting of the Institute, in discussion of President Brunton's address on "Modern Progress in Mining and Metallurgy in the Western United States," and at the request of members present, Mr. Ayres gave an oral account of his new separator, which is here published as an independent paper, partly because of its inherent importance and partly because it describes an improvement which did not originate in the Western United States, and therefore does not fall, strictly speaking, under the title of President Urunton's address.—R. W. R.] A brief history of the growth of the anthracite-coal preparation will give a better view-point from which to judge the present problem of separating slate from coal. At the beginning of the commercial value of anthracite, 70 years ago, only the pure portions, or " splits," of the veins were mined and shipped to market, and without any preparation or screening other than the selection, while loading, of the glassy lumps, and the rejection of the fine material and the slate that had strayed accidentally into the coal. The next step was the crushing or breaking of the coal (hence the name "breaker" as applied to the preparation-building), and the sizing of it by means of bars or revolving screens. This stage of its development marked the advent of the " breaker-boy " as a slate-picker, with his ever-increasing capriciousness. As the richer veins or a splits " became exhausted and the market demanded a still greater output, the less-pure " splits " and the thinner veins were utilized to produce the coal. Carrying as they do a far greater percentage of impurities, particularly when removing the pillars, it became necessary to build new and better equipped preparation-plants. Finally, we are now at the highest stage of complicatioii yet known to the art of coal-preparation. We are dealing with varying specific gravities, frictional difference, hardness, structure, and form in the pieces of coal and slate coming from many different veins, and

The John Fritz Medal was awarded in January, 1916, to Dr. Elihu Thomson, "For -Achievements in Electrical Inventions, in Electrical Engineering, and in Industrial Development, and in Scientific Research." The medal will be presented to Dr. Thomson at a meeting, to be held in Boston on Friday evening, Dec. 8, 1916, in the Central Lecture Hall of the new buildings of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The program of the evening will include adresses by John J. Carty, Chairman of the Presentation Committee of the Board of Award, E. W. Rice, Jr., President, General Electric Co., and Dr. Richard C. Maclaurin, President, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The presentation will be made by Dr. Charles Warren Hunt, Chairman of the Board at the time the award was made, and the ceremonies will conclude with the response of Dr. Thomson. The John Fritz Medal is awarded from time to time for notable scientific or industrial achievement, and was provided for in a fund subscribed in memory of the great engineering pioneer, John Fritz. The award of the medal is made by a permanent board composed of four members from each of four American National Engineering Societies, namely, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. ENGINEERS as a group are often criticized because they have been responsible for the development of many technical improvements only to allow the administration of them to pass into the hands of others who may have little understanding of how they operate and little competence in their use. These criticisms are not always justified. There are many engineers who have shown themselves to be great administrators in addition to being great creators or builders, and more and more one sees the engineer demonstrating unusual administrative ability as he moves into the executive ranks. The last five or ten years have seen a new movement developing in this country-a movement brought about through the recognition by business statesmen that successful business administrators and executives just cannot be expected to develop like Topsy, that the management of a company must deliberately take steps to cultivate the proper climate or environment for growth if it wishes to provide an adequate and capable succession of executives in the future. This movement has taken on a number of names-Management Development, Executive Development, Personnel Development-but are these not actually misnomers? Can we develop anybody? In the strictest sense of the word, the author doubts that anyone can change any other person, at least, not much. The change must come from within. Perhaps this movement should be looked at not as a program of developing people but as one of giving people an opportunity to develop themselves. In the Humble Oil & Refining Co. there is an Executive Development Program; maybe it might better be called a Program of Development for Executives.

THE activation energy values for self-diffusion in pure metals have been correlated with a number of physical properties such as melting points,1 valences,' Debye temperatures,3 and cohesive energy densities.4 Extending the melting point correlation, the self-diffusion activation energy values for the alloys can be similarly correlated with the solidus temperatures. For metals and alloys which exhibit phase transformations, such a correlation is not feasible because of the uncertainty of various physical properties of the corresponding phases. Using thermodynamical approach, Ardell5 calculated the hypothetical melting points of the low melting phases of the polymorphic metals. However, these calculated melting points do not show reasonable correspondence with the activation energy of self-diffusion. Recently, a new approach treating metals and alloys as electron concentration phases has been developed by Engel6 and Brewer.7 These workers have attempted to correlate the crystal structures with the electron configurations of the atoms existing either in ground state or in an excited state of low promotion energy. The basic postulate of this theory is that whereas the contribution to the bonding of the metal comes from the interaction of both d and (s-p) electrons existing either independently or in hybridized states, the existing crystal structure is controlled by the (s-p) electrons alone. Specifically, a metal is supposed to crystallize in bcc, hcp, or fcc phase provided the metal has one, two, or three valence electrons per atom in the (s-p) configurations. The diamond, or ZnO and ZnS structures, occur with four (s-p) electrons per atom. Secondly, the contribution of d electrons to bonding is supposed to increase with atomic number

THE gypsum industry of Canada, like all others connected with the construction business, has felt the full effect of the depression during the past few years, and sales of its products have been greatly curtailed. The year 1934, however, saw a decided turn for the better and a gradual but steady improvement is noticeable in all its branches. In many ways the depression has been a blessing in disguise to the gypsum industry; during the years from 1926 to 1930, demand increased so rapidly that companies were forced to expand and often new apparatus and machinery were placed in operation regardless of expense, or plants already existing were taxed to their limit and forced to keep running with the minimum amount of repairs. The depression, therefore, has really given the industry what might be called a breathing spell, in which it has had time to take stock of its position, to reduce its costs of production, to devote more serious attention to the quality of its products, and to con-solidate its operations into a smooth working whole, which as conditions improve will enable it to meet the demands of the trade with more varied products of a quality hitherto unattained. Progress in the gypsum industry, however, has not been confined to the years of the depression, for some of the greatest advances occurred under the spur of increased demand for its products by the building trade. The purpose of this paper is to review briefly some of the out-standing trends in the development of the gypsum industry in Canada during the past 10 or 12 years.

THE submission of carefully prepared estimates of the oil reserves of the United States calls for no apology or explanation. In this country, petroleum is a rapidly wasting asset and an occasional appraisal of the amount remaining in the ground is a simple business procedure to safe-guard the general welfare and the prosperity of the republic. The rumored danger of failure, in the near future, of the foreign supply on which we depend in constantly increasing amounts makes the immediate review of our available reserves the more imperative. The Director of the U. S. Geological Survey, in March, 1921, requested the American Association of Petroleum Geologists to cooperate in the preparation of new estimates of the oil remaining in the ground. With the members of this cooperative committee, state geologists, regional geologists, consulting specialists, and geologists and engineers attached to many companies worked both independently and through sub-committees. The reports for districts, counties, fields, etc., after review by local or state committees, were discussed by the joint cooperative committee in conferences that, in some instances, were attended by the original compilers of estimates for the states or smaller areas. Finally the data were reviewed and the figures revised by the joint cooperative committee, so that the totals given in Table 1 represent the opinion of the committee, which was composed of F. W. DeWolf, W. E. Wrather, Roswell H. Johnson, Wallace A. Pratt, Alexander W. McCoy, Carl H. Beal, C. T. Lupton, G. C. Matson, K. C. Heald, W. T. Thom, Jr., A. E. Fath, Kirtley F. Mather, R. C. Moore, and David White, chairman.

Based on Kurdjumoiv-Sachs orientation relationship for the fee bee transformation in metals, the jirzal crystal orientation resulting from successive transformations of bee-fee-bee has been analyzed mathematically. There are 528 different variants; many of ther are crystallograpyically equirvalent. Specific examples show that, for equal probability of all the variants, the principal crystallographic axes [100 ], [110], and [111] of the initial bcc crystal can be transformed into vairous axes in the fina1 crystal However, fur each of these principal crystallographic axes, a continuous range of orientation within certain regions of the unit triangle is completely avoided by the finctl Crystals. For uses of higher indices, the final orientations are more uniformly distributed throughout the unit triangle. Results from the PI-esent analysis are in good agreement with preferred Oientations Observed in a zone-meltecl iron bar. THE allotropic forms of iron are characterized by the unusual fact that at both high and low temperatures a bcc structure is stable, whereas at intermediate temperatures (1400" to 910°C) the metal is fcc. Hence, during cooling from its melting temperature, iron undergoes successive phase transformations ofd—? —a with corresponding changes in the crystal structure of bcc — fcc -bcc. while numerous studies have been made in the past of the 1 — a transformation in iron and in various iron-base alloys, no information is available in the literature as to the mechanism of 6 — l transformation and the lattice orientation relationship between these two phases. Oil production in north Louisianat in 1939 was 25,249,640 bbl., a decrease of 11.2 per cent from 1938. The only important increases in production were in the Cotton Valley and Shreveport fields, but Caddo, Homer, Sligo and Zwolle also made slight gains. Greatest decreases were in the Lisbon and Rodessa fields. Xatural gas production of 313,333 million cu. ft. was an increase of 5.6 per cent over 1938. The increase was accounted for in the Monroe field, while all other fields showed only minor variations from the production of the previous year. Well completions in 1939, as compared with 1938, were as follows: The decline in number of completions was due entirely to lack of proved areas for drilling, and would have been greater except for a revival of interest in the old Caddo shallow field. A majority of the wells completed during the year were in various old, shallow fields, so the average depth of drilling was much less than in several preceding years, notwithstanding a few very deep tests. No new fields were discovered, the only wildcat well reported as a producer being a very small oil well in northwestern De Soto Parish, which is of no apparent commercial importance. Deep gas-distillate production in the Cotton Valley formation was opened at Lake Bistineau and Lisbon, and oil at Shongaloo, but all these wells were too small to encourage additional drilling. An account is given of the way in which a new process for desulphurization of hot metal is carried out at a Swedish blastfurnace plant. In the process powdered burnt lime is used as a desulphurizing agent in a rotary furnace. Results are given. IN a paper by Kalling et al.* the fundamentals of a new process for desulphurization of hot metal using powdered burnt lime as a desulphurizing agent were outlined. The purpose of the present paper is to give a brief account of the way in which this process is being carried out in practice by Surahammars Bruks AB, Sweden, and of the results obtained. + The hot metal from the blast furnace is tapped into a ladle of 15 tons capacity and transferred to a rotary furnace, a simplified drawing of which is given in Fig. 1. The rotary furnace has a total length of about 160 in. and an outside diameter of the rings of about 130 in. The furnace is in a horizontal position, with its rings placed on four rollers, and can be rotated by a driving mechanism at various speeds of up to 34 rpm. The rotary furnace and its driving mechanism were designed and constructed at Surahammar. The hot metal is charged into the rotary furnace through the opening to the left in Fig. 1. See Fig. 2. An addition is then made to the furnace consisting of finely ground burnt lime amounting to 2 pct of the weight of the hot metal as well as 0.5 pct of coke breeze. After the additions are made, the furnace is sealed to the atmosphere by means of two lids and set in rotary motion at a rate of 34 rpm. The sulphur in the hot metal is rapidly absorbed by the lime added, the time of treatment needed is normally 30 min. The process is then stopped, the lid is removed, and the furnace is lifted up by a crane and used as a tilting ladle for pouring the metal into the pig-iron molds, Fig. 3. Process Metallurgy The hot metal charged into the rotary furnace has a composition which usually lies within the following limits: C, 3.70 to 4.10 pct; Si, 0.80 to 1.80; Mn, 0.40 to 0.80; P, 0.025 to 0.030; and S, 0.060 to 0.200. Figs. 4 and 5 give examples of the changes in hot metal composition taking place during the treatment in the rotary furnace. As will be seen from the diagrams, the sulphur content of the metal decreases very rapidly during the first 10 min of treatment from about 0.100 to about 0.020 pct S. During the following 20 min, the sulphur content goes down slowly to about 0.005 pct S. The carbon and silicon contents of the metal decrease by about 0.10 pct each during the treatment. The manganese and phosphorus contents remain unchanged. Thus, if the process is started with an iron of the composition given above, the finishing composition of the metal usually lies within the following limits: C, 3.60 to 4.00 pct; Si, 0.70 to 1.70; Mn, 0.40 to 0.80; P, 0.025 to 0.030; and S, 0.002 to 0.020. TEACHING engineering students how to write and speak effectively -is one of the greatest problems facing the technical schools today. No phase of engineering education has received more criticism, and rightly so, for the criticism is justified. Year after year we continue to graduate men that are indifferent to the use of a tool they will need every day of their lives. Our young engineers cannot write a clear, concise report, and their business letters are a disgrace to the profession that takes pride in precision. The problem is not new. The remark ascribed to Sir James Barrie, that "The man of science appears to be the only man who has something to say, just now-and the only man who does not know how to say it" is as uncomfortably true today as it was thirty years ago. The records of meetings of engineering educators and the transactions of the engineering societies show that the inability of the engineer to communicate his ideas has been discussed for years. Engineering educators, prodded by industry, have recognized that the problem exists, but they have not solved it. Instead they continue to expose the student to composition and rhetoric, hustle him through English and American literature, and then blame his high school because he does not know enough English grammar to write a clear sentence. We must face the fact that the graduate is not going to reflect on the high school, but on his college. If the high school has shirked the job, the responsibility for correction rests on the faculty of the professional school.
