High-energy consumption in primary aluminum production (from bauxite ores) makes secondary aluminum production (from metallic raw materials such as scrap and dross) very critical. Aluminum dross, as a waste, arises in pyrometallurgical processes, and it is the mixture of metallic Al, Al2O3, other metal oxides, metal halides, and some other compounds like AlN. Aluminum dross has two subgroups (white and black) with respect to its metallic aluminum content. White dross is a secondary aluminum resource because of its high metallic aluminum content, whereas black dross, having low metallic aluminum content, is generally disposed in dumping areas. In the present study, it was aimed to develop a simple technique to valorize aluminum black dross in the form of alumina-based ceramic materials through pyrometallurgical (calcination) and hydrometallurgical (leaching) operations. Moreover, thermochemical simulations were conducted by using HSC Chemistry 6.12 software to simulate calcination conditions. After leaching experiments, an alumina-based ceramic containing approximately 36.8% Al2O3, 61.4% MgAl2O4 with 1.8% Na2FeO4, which might be available to use as a spinel refractory in steel smelting furnaces, was obtained in the experiment carried out in a solution containing 10 mLH2SO4 and 40 mL distilled water (3.5 M). Moreover, the sinterability of the alumina-based ceramic was investigated at the temperatures from 1350 to 1550 °C. In the sample which was sintered at 1550 °C, a density value of 3.15 g cm−3 and a hardness value of 69.58 HV were measured.

Fe-6.5wt.%Si alloy has excellent soft magnetic properties compared with conventional silicon steel. It is very brittle at room temperature due to appearance of ordered phases, like B2 and DO3. In this paper, we investigate the effect of ordering on cold workability of this alloy. Methods of rapid quenching and hot rolling were utilized. It is found that rapid quenching and proper heat treatment of the hot rolled sheet could decrease the degree of order due to the very high solidification rate and high cooling rate. The rapid quenched sheet and hot rolled sheet after proper heat treatment could be cold rolled without crack. Microstructure, phase ordering, micro hardness, and cold rolling properties were investigated by Optical Microscope, X-ray Diffraction, Micro Hardness Indenter and Four-high Mill.

ABSTRACT: An evaluation of the importance of the thermo-hydro-mechanical couplings (THM) on the performance assessment of a deep underground storage design has been made as part of the international DECOVALEX III project. It is a numerical study that simulates a generic repository configuration in the near field in a granite medium. The thermo-hydro-mechanical evolution of the whole configuration is simulated over a period of 100 years. The model used to represent the unsaturated behaviour of the various porous media makes allowance for moisture transfers through the effect of thermal and water gradients. The paper presents a comparison of the temperature, water pressure and stress fields obtained by TM, TH, HM and THM coupled calculations. The results demonstrate that temperature is hardly affected by the couplings. In contrast the influence of the couplings on the mechanical stresses is considerable. This is attributed to the key role that water has on bentonite swelling or shrinkage effects that are dependent on its saturation level variations. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG : Im Rahmen des internationalen Projekts DECOVALEX III wurde untersucht, wie groß der Einfluss thermisch-hydraulisch-mechanischer Kopplungen (THM) auf die Leistungsfähigkeit eines Konzeptes zur Lagerung hoch radioaktiver Abfälle zu bewerten ist. Bei dieser numerischen Behandlung wird eine generelle Lagerungskonfiguration in granitartigem Milieu simuliert. Die thermisch-hydraulisch-mechanischen Prozesse werden für eine Dauer von 100 Jahren simuliert. Bei dem Modell, mit dem das Verhalten der verschiedenen, unterschiedlich porösen Milieus in ungesättigtem Zustand dargestellt werden soll, werden die Feuchtigkeitstransporte infolge thermischer und hydraulischer Vorgänge berücksichtigt. Verglichen werden in diesem Artikel verschiedene Temperatur-, Wasserdruck- und Beanspruchungsfelder, die sich aus TM-, TH-, HM- und THM gekoppelten Berechnungen ergaben. Dabei stellte sich heraus, dass die Temperatur nur gering von den Kopplungen berührt wird. Die Einflüsse der Kopplungen auf die Mechanik sind hingegen bedeutend; ausschlaggebend dafür ist der Faktor Wasser, der den Bentonit je nach Sättigungsgrad quellen oder trocknen lässt. RESUME : Dans le cadre du projet international DECOVALEX III, une évaluation de l’importance des couplages thermo-hydro-mécaniques (THM) sur les performances d’un concept de stockage de déchets fortement radioactifs a été menée. Il s’agit d’une étude numérique simulant une configuration générique de stockage en champ proche dans un milieu granitique. L’évolution thermo-hydro-mécanique de l’ensemble est simulée sur une période de 100 ans. Le modèle utilisé pour représenter le comportement non saturé des différents milieux poreux prend en compte les transferts d’humidité sous l’effet de gradients thermiques et hydriques. L'article présente une comparaison des champs de température, de pression d’eau et de contraintes obtenues par des calculs couplés TM, TH, HM et THM. Les résultats montrent que la température est peu affectée par les couplages. En revanche, l’incidence des couplages sur la mécanique est importante; ce qui est attribué au rôle majeur joué par l’eau à travers les effets de gonflement ou de retrait de la bentonite selon la variation de son degré de saturation. "This study evaluated the Salvinia sp action on metals biosorption in a synthetic sample of acid mine drainage (AMD) in order to determine the time and amount of metals uptake. Biosorptives tests were realized varying the contact time of 5, 20, 60 and 240 minutes. And keeping constant the follow parameters: pH (2.6), biomass concentration (1g.L-1), temperature (25°C) and agitation (175rpm). In order to quantify the metals concentration captured by biomass, the AMD samples will be analyzed by ICP. Biosorbent, Salvinia sp., will be characterized before and after the biosorptives tests through analysis of SEM and IR. The micrographs indicate the occurrence of micro-precipitation and changes in biomass physical structure. The infrared spectra indicate changes in functional groups present in the biomass before and after the biosorptives tests.IntroductionThe current emphasis on environmental sustainability leads the industry in general, to treat their waste. The human activities are increasing, highlighting the industrial and mining activities, and have promoted the contamination of soil, waterways and groundwater by metals (1). The waste must undergo treatment processes aimed at reducing pollution, and therefore, less aggression ecosystems.This means the importance of studies of economic and effective methods to eliminate these metals from wastewater generated. The bioindicators are good investments in this area. The aquatic weeds are plants that inhabit swamps up from truly aquatic environments. They have several morphological and physiological adaptations that enable them to colonize the various aquatic environments. They are used as bioindicators of water quality and have also been used in decontamination of aquatic environments, production of biomass for livestock feed, fertilizers, soil and fish tanks (2)."

ABSTRACT: Hydraulic experiments have been conducted since 1997 within a small fractured calcareous rock mass in southeastern France, at a site called Coaraze. On this reduced-scale site closing a floodgate located on a downstream spring produces repeated hydraulic loadings. Simultaneous measurements of normal deformations and pressure in several joints have provided a better understanding of the hydromechanical behaviour of such a fractured rock mass. The present paper first describes both the site and conceptual interpretation of the measurements performed. We showed that accurate measurement reproduction requires incorporating certain features: a variable normal joint stiffness, the joint vicinity (through introducing a Z coefficient), and the initial stress state. The paper then develops an original analytical interpretation of the coupled pressure-displacement measurements carried out, which reveal the high level of measurement suitability to the non-linear behaviours examined. 2D modelling, using the discontinuous code (UDEC) was used to proceed with the calibration step. In diesem kleinen Standort, werden wiederholte Wasserdruck Erhöhungen durch das Schliessen eines Hahnes produziert. Gleichzeitiger Druck und normale Verformung Meßungen in mehreren Fugen haben erlaubt, das hydromechanische Verhalten einer solche gebrochene Felsenmasse besser zu verstehen. Der Artikel beschreibt zuerst den Standort und stellt die begrifflichen Interpretationen der Meßungen vor. Um die Meßungen gut zu reproduzieren ist es wesentlich, bestimmte Faktoren wie die veränderliche normale Steifheit der Fugen, die Nachbarschaft der Fugen (über einen Z-Koeffizient) und der Spannungstand zu berücksichtigen. Der Artikel erklärt die originale Methode für die Druck- und Verformungs-Meßungen Interpretation und zeigt die gute Korrelation der Meßungen mit dem nicht-linearen angenommen Verhaltens der Fugen. Die numerische 2D-Modellierung mit dem UDEC Software ist für die Verkeilung der Faktoren gebraucht worden. Pour bien reproduire les mesures, Il est essentiel de prendre en compte certains facteurs tels que la raideur normale variable du joint, le voisinage du joint (par l'intermédiaire d'un coefficient Z), l'état de contrainte initial. L'article précise la méthode originale d'interprétation des mesures pression-déplacements qui montre la bonne adéquation aux lois de comportement non linéaire proposées. This document presents a description of the results of a project aimed at producing a broad description of current mining training programs and an evaluation of their effectiveness with respect to reducing mine injuries. Aggregate training and injury data were used to evaluate the overall training effort at 300 mines as well as specific efforts in twelve categories of training course objectives. From such evaluations, recommendations were derived with particular emphasis being placed on identifying program characteristics that tend to be associated with effective training. Recommendations were also formulated with reference to role changes in industry and government interaction with respect to training programs, new or additional training programs, changes in the types of course materials and training methodologies, and recommendations concerning new areas for investigation.

Strainbursts are common in overstressed brittle rock around deep mine openings. Such failures are characterized by a biaxial state of stress in the plane of the opening boundary. A zone of compressive stresses imposes initial failures near or at the surface of the opening that results in spalling of thin slabs of rock roughly parallel to the free face. While the failure of rock under biaxial loading conditions is increasingly common in deep underground mines, only a few representative laboratory studies have been reported in the literature, without emphasis on rockbursting aspects, and none in the last decade. This paper presents the results of a testing program on a granite rock type. Biaxial testing, conducted on 100 mm cubic samples, was carried out to examine the influence of lateral confinement and loading rate on the rock’s ultimate strength. The paper reports the test results in terms of normalized biaxial failure envelope s1/sc-s2/sc. A discussion of the failure mechanisms observed is presented. Les coups de toits de déformations sont choses communes dans le rock cassant surcontraint en place autour des ouvertures minières profondes. De telles ruptures sont caractérisées par un état de contraintes biaxiales dans le plan de la périphérie de l’ouverture. Une zone de contraintes compressives impose des ruptures initiales à ou près de la surface de l’ouverture, qui produit des relâchements de minces plaques de roc plus ou moins parallel à la surface. Bien que les ruptures de roc sous des conditions biaxiales sont de plus en plus communes dans les mines à grandes profondeurs, il n’y a eu que quelques études représentatives en laboratoire de publiées, sans emphase sur des aspects de coups de terrains, et aucunes publiées depuis la dernière décennie. L’article présente les résultats d’une campagne d’essais appliquée à un type de granit. La campagne d’essais biaxiaux, sur des échantillons cubiques de 100 mm, avait pour objectif d’examiner l’influence du confinement latéral et le taux de chargement sur la résistance ultime du roc. Cet article fait part des résultats en terme de l’enveloppe de rupture biaxiale normalisée s1/sc-s2/sc. Une discussion sur les mécanismes de ruptures observés est présentée. Dehnungsbrüche findet man häufig in übergespannten spröden Felsen um die Öffnung von tiefen Minen. Solche Brüche sind von einer zweiachsigen Spannung in der Ebene der Grenze der Öffnung charakterisiert. Eine Zone von Druckspannungen verursacht initiale Brüche, entweder an der Öberflache der Öffnung oder in der Nähe. Davon scheiden sich dünne Felsplatten mehr oder weniger parallele mit der freien Wand. Obwohl Felsbrüche unter zweiachsiger Beanspruchung immer mehr häufig in tiefen Minen beobachtet sind, hat man über nur einige repräsentative Laborversuche in der Literatur berichtet. Diese Studien diskutieren das Thema ohne Betonung auf Felsbrüchen, und keine sind in den letzten zehn Jahren erschienen. Die vorliegene Arbeit gibt die Ergebnisse eines Testprogramms auf einem Typ von Granitfels. Durch zweiachsige Prüfungen von kubischen Proben mit Seitenlangen von 100 mm sollte man den Einfluss von seitlicher Ermittlung und der Beanspruchungsrate auf die Bruchfestigkeit des Felsen studieren. Man findet auch die Prüfergebnisse in bezug auf das normalisierte, zweiachsige Bruchkriterium s1/sc-s2/sc. Die beobachteten Bruchmechanismen sind auch diskutiert.

After considerable input from the mining industry, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) finalised National Instrument 43-101: Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects. This Instrument, which became law across Canada on 1 February 2001, applies to all technical public disclosure on mineral projects and requires all technical disclosure to be based on the work of a æqualified personÆ (QP). While the QP is quite similar to the Competent Person in Australia there are important differences when it comes to all disclosure. This paper will summarise the main areas in which the Instrument introduces major changes to Canadian disclosure standards on mineral projects including the role and responsibility of the qualified person; the increased requirements to file technical reports; the incorporation by reference of the October 2000 CIM definitions of resources and reserves and additional rules governing written disclosure of scientific and technical information. In October 2001, eight months after the implementation of NI 43-101, the CSA compiled a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) and CSA responses to assist mining industry participants and their advisors in understanding and applying NI-43-101. This document has been well received by industry. The CSA plans to update the FAQs when further guidance is requested. Two industry committees have been established to provide the CSA with technical advice on the application of NI 43-101. As recommended by the Ontario Securities Commission/Toronto Stock Exchange Mining Standards Task Force, the CSA has established an external industry advisory committee û the Mining Technical Advisory and Monitoring Committee (MTAMC) û to monitor the application of NI 43-101 and advise the CSA on industry and professional developments. The role of the CSA-Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Working Committee on Reserves and Resources is to ensure that the future changes and updates to the CIM Standards can be efficiently and effectively incorporated in NI 43-101. During this first year, the Canadian securities regulators have seen an improvement in the quality of disclosure on mineral projects, which will increase investor confidence in the industry.

NICKEL Plate mountain coincides closely with that portion of the Hedley mining district which is of economic interest. From it has come almost the entire past production, and the active mines of the present epoch, Nickel Plate-Sunnyside and Hedley Mascot, lie in a compact group near its summit. The Hedley district, which is 210 miles due east of Vancouver, is situated in the Okanagan range of southern British Columbia, where this rather gentle uplift is deeply dissected by the canyons of the Similkameen and its tributaries. The region is essentially part of the Interior Plateau of the Province (Figure 1), but is adjacent to easterly elements of the Coast Range. The Similkameen canyon, 4,000 feet in depth and frequently less than 4 miles from rim to rim, traverses the district from northwest to southeast. The deepest and narrowest portion of the canyon lies between Hedley and Keremeos, 18 miles to the southeast. At Hedley, an important tributary, Twenty Mile creek, enters from the north in a bold canyon, making a focus of unusually rugged topography. Nickel Plate mountain occupies the sector to the east of this junction (see Figure 2) and its flanks are ringed by the cliffs of Twenty Mile canyon on the west and by those of the Similkameen canyon on the south. On the east, it slopes gently to the hanging valley of Eighteen Mile creek, and on the north, with only slight loss of elevation, it merges into the moderately hilly surface of the plateau.

THIS IS a progress report on a study of the application of statistical practice to mine and mineral sampling undertaken by the Federal Bureau of Mines to provide sound theoretical and practical data for use of the mineral engineering professions. One of the problems in mine sampling is determining the reliability of the results. For certain types of sampling data (random data) the reliability of the results can be stated mathematically. For other types of data there is no known means of quantitatively expressing reliability. In applying measures of reliability to a set of random data, some knowledge or assumption of the characteristics of the particular data is necessary. In many fields these characteristics are well known. However, in mining, where the data are in assays, these characteristics are not well known.

"RÉSUMÉ La lixiviation acide d’un minerai oxydé cupro-cobaltifère en milieu non réducteur et en milieu réducteur en utilisant le Fe2+ et le métabisulfite de sodium (SMBS) a été étudiée et les résultats ont été comparés. Les tests de lixiviation ont été effectués à température ambiante, dans une pulpe à 30 % solide, avec une vitesse d’agitation de 600 tr/min, un potentiel redox de 350 mV pour les tests en milieu réducteur, et un pH de 1,8. Les tests de lixiviation avec usage du SMBS comme réducteur ont donné la meilleure cinétique de lixiviation du cuivre. Pour le cobalt, c’est l’usage du Fe2+ qui a donné la meilleure cinétique de lixiviation. L’augmentation de la dose du fer dans la solution au-delà de 5 g/L a influencé négativement les rendements de lixiviation du cuivre et du cobalt. ABSTRACT Acid leaching of a copper-cobaltiferous oxide ore in a non-reducing environment and in a reducing environment using Fe2+ and sodium metabisulfite (SMBS) was studied and the results compa¬red. The leaching tests were performed at room temperature, in a 30% solids pulp, with a shaking speed of 600 rpm, a redox potential of 350 mV for the tests performed in the reducing environment, and a pH of 1.8. The leaching tests using the SMBS as a reducing agent produced the best copper leaching kinetics. As for cobalt, the best leaching kinetics was achieved using Fe2+. An increase in the amount of iron in the solution above 5 g/L negatively influenced copper and cobalt leaching yields. INTRODUCTION La République Démocratique du Congo (RDC) est un pays reconnu dans le monde pour son sous-sol qui regorge d’énormes quantités de cuivre et de cobalt (USGS, 2014; Palisade Research, 2016). La technique qui semble être la plus recommandée pour extraire à la fois le cuivre et le cobalt des minerais oxydés cupro-cobaltifères est la lixivia-tion acide en milieu réducteur. Cette technique est appliquée par la majorité des sociétés minières qui exploitent ces minerais dans l’ex-province du Katanga en RDC, à savoir: Tenke Fungurume Mining, Mutanda Mining, Kamoto Cop¬per Company, Sicomines, Gécamines, Boss Mining, Chemaf, Ruashi Mining et Somika. L’usage d’un agent réducteur est indispensable pour l’obtention d’un bon rendement de lixiviation du cobalt. En effet, plusieurs chercheurs s’accordent sur le fait que le cobalt trivalent de l’hétérogénite (CoO·2Co2O3·6H2O) est insoluble à l’action de l’acide seul; il ne devient soluble qu’après réduction en cobalt bivalent (Mwema, Mpoyo, & Kafumbila, 2002; Mulaba-Bafubiandi, Ndalamo, & Mamba, 2007; Ferron, 2008; Seo, Choi, Kim, & Tran, 2013; Stuurnam, Ndlovu, & Sibanda, 2014)."

RISKGATE is an interactive online risk management system developed by the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC; University of Queensland) to maximise health and safety performance in the mining industry through implementing continual improvement in management of major unwanted events. A comprehensive knowledge base has been captured for risk management of tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives, manual tasks and slips/trips/falls. This will be extended to outburst, coal burst and bumps, interface displays and controls, tailings dams and inrush in 2013. RISKGATE presents substantive and leading edge controls to assist industry stakeholders in the design, management and reporting of organisational and regulatory compliance requirements. From a broader industry perspective, RISKGATE provides an environment for knowledge capture and knowledge exchange to drive innovation and best practice in the identification, assessment and management of risk. By capturing operational knowledge from industry experts, RISKGATE provides a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover in the coal industry. All major Australian mining companies are contributing topic experts to this broad industry initiative. In the first 24 months, nine coal mining companies nominated over 80 different experts who contributed over 400 days of individual time to the knowledge capture workshops. RISKGATE is the largest single Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) occupational health and safety (OHS) initiative to date.

With access to the World Wide Web, many resources are readily available for improving claim reports. With a little time spent on line, a more thorough report can be created. Claimants will accept the conclusions of a report more readily when they can view support information on their own computer, particularly when the support information is not just from blasting related web sites. Some suggested resources are discussed including aerial pictures, local tax maps, topographical maps and home repair web sites. This paper provides suggestions for tracking down support information on the web and information on how to properly reference this information. Case studies of several claim investigations are presented. These are some examples of how a little time spent online provided clear and convincing evidence to support the conclusions of the investigation.

"INTRODUCTION The Bulk Handling Technology has suffered an important development in the recent years, allowing the use of conveyor belts in the most important and critical applications. As a consequence of this, the reliability and lasting performance of the conveyor belt components is becoming more and more significant, thus the implementation of preventive maintenance programs is a must. The rollers are one of the consumables in the conveyor belts, which have to be changed once arrived to the end of life. The actual ways of detecting this moment always require intensive use of labour and they are not very accurate. Indeed, if the rollers get broken before replacement, the consequences could be very important, generating additional costs and operational losses. The R&D Department of ULMA Conveyor Components, has been working since early 2012 on the development of Monitored Rollers along with a Management Software to provide users the capacity to Manage and Monitor the rollers from its desk, getting continuous online information on the internal temperature of the bearings, on the working status of the rollers as well as the identification of the rollers close to their end of life so that they could be changed during the next maintenance stop of the conveyor belt. In short, a system of Preventive Maintenance for Conveyor Belt Rollers BACKGROUND AND CURRENT STATE The malfunction of a single roller in certain conveyor belts can suppose the standstill of the whole installation until its replacement, due to the risk of greater and more expensive failures like the rip of the belt. In the case of a bulk handling installation where a continuous supply of material is necessary, a bare stop of one hour could entail huge economical losses. What’s more, many conveyor belts are several kilometers length or the access to some parts of them is very complicated. Due to these difficulties the inspection and maintenance operations can become expensive and hard going, with staff going over the whole area checking the correct condition of the conveyor and rollers, which means a dangerous activity. In addition, it’s quite common to find rollers working in very harsh conditions, completely exposed to the elements or working in corrosive closed environments like underground mines. These tough working conditions together with the very demanding features of Bulk Handling sector (high loads, speed, dangerous materials etc.) can bring the unexpected failure of a roller, even being designed to support them. Thus, to have the working conditions of the rollers real time is clearly required, in order to achieve an actual predictive maintenance of the system and avoid fatal failures. Early stage design of driven piles primarily relies on static analysis based on one or a combination of total and effective stress approaches, the latter known as the method to estimate axial capacity. A database of 85 piles driven in the Puget Sound Lowland region and monitored at End of Driving (EOD) and Beginning of Restrike (BOR) was compiled along with capacities estimated using the CAPWAP procedure. Established soil profiles based on borings with standard penetration tests (SPT), cone penetration tests, and geologic maps were matched with their corresponding unit shaft resistance profiles from the CAPWAP procedure and resulted in more than 1,200 observations. In this study, eight new models were developed to predict the coefficients at EOD and BOR, based on the corresponding USCS categorization. Each coefficient model is formulated using a three-parameter exponential function, calibrated to capture the profile of coefficients with depth. These models could benefit the designer by providing them with a simple, empirical model that accounts for soil type and setup in a smooth, continuous function with depth. A parallel analysis was performed to assess the accuracy and variability of the formulated prediction models to facilitate implementation in load and resistance factor design (LRFD). INTRODUCTION The design of the axial capacity of driven piles during the planning stages of a project is typically based on a static analysis approach. The goals of this approach are to predict the components of capacity, consisting of the shaft and toe bearing resistances, and to assess project concept feasibility and preliminary lengths. In most cases, this analysis is based on empirically-developed methods, such as the total stress method, also known as the method (Tomlinson 1987) or the effective stress method known as the method (Esrig and Kirby 1979; Fellenius 1991). Many other methods, such as those based on in-situ test results exist and rely on correlations of blow counts from the standard penetration test (SPT), and cone tip and sleeve friction resistance from the cone penetration test (CPT), to shaft and toe pile resistances (Schmertmann 1978; Meyerhof 1976; Nottingham and Schmertmann 1975; Nordlund 1963; Eslami and Fellenius, 1997; De Ruiter and Beringen 1979). Although these methods were generally developed using data from specific geological regions, they are often recommended in national design manuals (e.g., FHWA, Hannigan et al. 2006).

A radioisotope probe (Minexan 202) capable of simultaneously analyzing a mineral slurry for five elements and pulp density has been developed by Outokumpu Oy, Finland. The probe is designed to operate immersed directly in a process stream, or it can be equipped with a flow cell through which passes a continuous sample of the main stream. A minicomputer (PDPII) is used to control the probes and calculate the assay data. This paper describes the probe as applied to slurry analysis and compares it to the conventional x-ray on-stream analyzer (Courier 300).

Recovery via gravity is one of the oldest mineral processing methods available. Unfortunately, the use of gravity techniques for gold recovery has been in decline for the past century as more effective chemical processes such as flotation and leach/CIP have been developed. Recently, with the push towards more sustainable environmental outcomes, the benefits of gravity separation have become more apparent. While gravity as a unit process is not usually capable of achieving as high a recovery as flotation or whole ore cyanidation, a combination of gravity devices alone or in conjunction with these processes can offer significant advantages to the operator. This paper reviews the range of gravity devices available, their application and the results that can be achieved by maximizing gravity through the use of a combination of gravity recovery devices. Three case studies are provided.

Size-by-size partition curves for mineral separation in dense-medium cyclones pivot about a single characteristic point. This is defined for stable, non-segregating media by the medium density and the proportion of the medium reporting to the underflow. The pivot point departs from these values for unstable, conventional media. The phenomenon can be represented by an equation with two parameters defining pivot point coordinates and two the Ep value. On the basis of experiments in a 200 mm cyclone using ferrosilicon media, simple regression equations were developed for the separation parameters in terms of operating conditions (the coefficients were likely to be site-specific). The experiments successfully decoupled the effects of medium density and viscosity and showed that the value of Ep was independent of the former but strongly dependent on the latter. A classification model was used to predict the density of the underflow medium, a knowledge of which is required to determine the pivot parameters. The model correctly reflects the performance trends observed in dense-medium cyclone operation and has the potential to be generalised to a wide range of industrial practice.

This regional report covers the mineral industries of Canada and 40 countries and areas in Latin America and the Caribbean Basin. Also included is a brief description of the mineral potential of Antarctica. The Latin American region encompasses an area twice that of the United States. Latin America and Canada have a rich and diversified endowment of mineral fuels, metals, and industrial minerals. Tables 1 and 2 provide a summary view of Latin America and Canada's output of its major mineral commodities in world mineral supply in 1990 and 1991. Table 3 shows the relative importance of a selected group of minerals produced in Latin America in the world mineral economy.
