Previous studies and research efforts have shown that noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a problem in the U.S. mining industry. This is especially true in surface and underground coal and stone mining where large, noisy equipment predominate. Workers in coal preparation and stone processing plants have also been found to be subject to high sound levels that could potentially cause NIHL over prolonged periods of exposure. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers have been conducting a cross-sectional survey of equipment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry to estimate the potential for NIHL within the mining community. One commodity recently surveyed was the extraction of sand and gravel from surface pits and by river dredging. Little is known about the noise environment and worker exposures in these environments, where processing and mining equipment similar to coal and stone are employed. To address the potential for NIHL in the sand and gravel industry, sound levels on and around the dredges and processing equipment were recorded to identify areas of high noise levels. Full-shift worker dosimetry, in conjunction with task observations, was documented to determine the relationship between exposure and source. This paper presents research examining noise on dredges, in several surface mine sand and gravel operations and in the processing facilities. The locations where workers are likely to be overexposed and were found to be most susceptible to noise overexposures are reported. Results indicate that there are areas on the dredges (crane, suction pumps, and diesel engines) where sound levels greater than 90 dB(A) are present. In addition, crushers and screens used in the processing of the sand and gravel also generate sound levels greater than 90 dB(A). Although no surveyed worker exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Permissible Exposure Level (PEL) of 90 dB(A) TWA8, laborers, mechanics, oilers, helpers, pickers, and greasers are the workers likely to be exposed to hazardous sound levels and thus develop NIHL over time. Knowledge of the equipment noise, area sound levels, and worker dose levels is information that management and employees can use to reduce exposures. Exposures can be reduced in certain areas through administrative controls and through engineering controls applied to the noisiest equipment.

This paper is one of a series on mining methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. It describes briefly mining practices at the Sunrise iron mine of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Corp., Platte County, Wyo. The Sunrise mine is in the Hartville iron district in east-central Wyoming (fig. 1). The district covers part of the Hartville Mountains, a region of moderate relief in which erosional features have been formed by the dissection of a low plateau. Altitudes vary from 4,300 feet along the North Platte River to 6,000 feet in the uplift. The climate is semiarid, with hot summers and winter temperatures below zero for short periods. Grasses, cacti, yucca, and low desert shrubs grow at lower elevations. Cottonwood and boxelder trees and willows grow along permanent streams; juniper and coniferous trees are confined to the higher elevations.

In response to increased aluminum demand, U.S. producers have begun reactivating primary aluminum capacity which was shutdown during the 1974-1975 recession. Reynolds Metals Company started up almost 80,000 tons per year of idled capacity at Listerhill, Alabama, and Jones Mills and Arkadelphia, Arkansas plants. Howmet Aluminum Corporation and Alumax announced that the operating rate at their jointly owned facility at Frederick, Maryland was being increased from 75 percent to 100 percent, equivalent to a 44,000 ton-per-year increase in output. Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. expected to restart one of the two idled potlines at its Mead, Washington facility in May raising its production rate by 27,000 tons per year. ANTHRACITE - The anthracite market for the larger sizes continues at a good level, and although the demand for industrial sizes has been weak, the current trend indicates an increased demand for industrial fines by the steel, auto, and other industries.

The performance of a 12.7 cm hydrocyclone was investigated by considering the effect of design variables (diameters of the vortex finder and apex) and operating variables (pressure drop and solids content of the feed) at a medium feed solids concentration of mixed minerals. Cut-size was found to be the most important parameter in hydrocyclone design and operation. The effect of feed pressure in reducing hydrocyclone cut-size is less pronounced at medium feed solids concentration with a mixed mineral feed. The choice of vortex finder diameter and apex diameter becomes more sensitive at medium feed solids concentrations. The effect of feed solids concentration in increasing the cut-size becomes less marked at higher concentrations. Predictions of an empirical model were found to be in good agreement with experimental data. Comparison of results obtained from the model with those predicted by theoretically derived models showed the latter to be more promising, with the turbulent two-phase model giving closer agreement with the experimental data

Pig iron nuggets, which have similar chemical and physical properties with blast furnace pig iron, were produced by a single step heat treatment of self reducing – fluxing dried greenballs. During this single step heat treatment the transformation of self reducing fluxing dried greenballs into pig iron nuggets did not take place instantaneously. Rather, it was composed of three transformation stages, (1) transformation of self reducing – fluxing dried greenballs into direct reduced iron (DRI), (2) transformation of DRI into transition direct reduced iron (TDRI), and (3) transformation of TDRI into pig iron nuggets. Thus, the objective of this research was to investigate these transformation mechanisms by analyzing the transformation stage products. The transformation stage products were produced at a constant furnace temperature of 1425°C and various furnace residence times. They were characterized according to their microstructure, microhardness and apparent density. The changes in the product’s physical and chemical properties with furnace residence time were utilized in understanding the transformation behavior, the chemical events that took place and the controlling mechanisms. It was determined that the transformations were dictated by the changes in the slag viscosity and wetting properties, and by carbon diffusion into metallized areas.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Northwest Barricade LLC (NWB) conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel fire blocking gel for use in underground coal mines to extinguish or to retard the growth of a coal fire. The gel agent was subjected to controlled laboratory testing to assess its ability to delay coal ignition. It was then evaluated to determine if manual fire hose application could be used to apply the agent to mine roofs and ribs to provide a safe egress for mine rescue teams from a fire area. The gel agent was also evaluated in a water sprinkler system to determine its potential for use in conveyor belt fire suppression systems. The agent was then tested in live-fire exercises to examine its effectiveness in retarding and extinguishing a deep-seated coal fire and wood fire. Lastly, the ability of a Mine Rescue Team to quickly and safely apply the gel agent to a mine entry during a simulated mine fire exercise was determined.

Many large caverns are being constructed in great depths in Korea mainly for the storage of oil and LPG. These caverns are mostly located near the port where rock conditions are reasonably good. In some instances, the horizontal stress is very high and endangers the stability of the cavern. The purpose of this study is to assess the stability of large caverns excavated in a rock mass with high horizontal stress where Ko value is close to 3. Result shows that stress exerted in the shotcrete at crown exceeds allowable value when the 3rd bench is excavated. Also found is the tensile failure of shotcrete near the boundaries between benches. In Korea werden viele grosse Kaverne fuer Aufbewahrung vom Oel und Fluessiggas in grosser Tiefe gebaut. Am Meisten befinden sich diese Kaverne in der Naehe von Haefen, wo der Fels gute Verhaeltnisse zum Bauen einer Kaverne besitzt. In einigen Faellen ist die Horizontalspannung sehr gross und dadurch wird die Stabilitaet vom Kaverne gefaerdet. Der Zweck dieser Arbeit ist die Stabilitaet des im Fels gebauten grossen Kavernes mit hoher Horiaontalspannung zu schuetzen, wo Ko-Wert sich auf 3 naehrt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Spannung im Spritzbeton an der Krone den zulaessigen Wert ueberschreitet, wenn das dritte Bank ausgegraben wird. Im Bereich des Spritzbetons zwischen Baenke wurde das Zugversagen festgestellt. Des larges cavités nombreuses sont en train d’être construites en grand profondeur en Corée prin-cipalement pour le stocage du pétrole et LPG. Ces cavités sont pour la plupart situées près de la porte oú les conditions des roches sont résonablement bons. En quelques cas, la contrainte hori-zontale est trés haute et met en danger la stabilité de la cavité. L’objet de cet étude est d’estimer la stabilité des large cavités excavées dans une masse de roche ayant une haute contrainte horizontale oú la valeur de Ko est proche à 3. Le résultat montre que la contrainte exercée dans le shotcrete à la couronne dépasse la valeur admissible quand le troisième banc est excavé. En plus une faillite en tension du shotcrete près de la frontière entre des bancs est trouvée.

Amenability studies were conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines on an electrooxidation technique for the extraction of mercury from cinnabar ores, particularly those that are too low in grade to be furnaced or retorted economically. Oxidation was accomplished by electrolysis of the ore while slurried with brine. Mercury was dissolved through the formation of the soluble tetrachloro mercury complex, HgC142-. Mercury extractions ranged from 90 to 98 percent in 4 to 6 hours of processing time when tests were made on eight different types of cinnabar ores containing from 0.7 to 18 pounds mercury per ton ore. Salt concentration was varied from 4 to 10 weight-percent depending on whether Pb02 anodes and iron cathodes were used or whether graphite was used for both electrodes. Power consumption ranged from 17 to 64 kilowatt-hours per ton of ore treated. Ninety-nine percent of the mercury was recovered from pregnant solutions by precipitation on an active metal such as zinc, followed by distillation of the resulting amalgam at 600° C.

The interaction between rock and drill bit during drilling has been modeled for many years, but a complete understanding of the phenomena occurring has yet to materialize. Successful models will allow the prediction of rate of penetration in a given environment and optimal selection of drill bit and drilling parameters, thus minimizing exploration costs. In most rock-drilling models the value of the unconfined compressive strength of the rock (UCS) is used in the predictive equations, within the concept of specific energy, and the value of UCS is the percentage of the value of the stress applied on the drilling bit in order for the bit to advance. While the exact percentage depends on the model used and it is not known with certainty, good knowledge of UCS is nevertheless required before any decent prediction can be made on rate of penetration. Determination of UCS, normally done via destructive testing, requires not only the availability of sound rock core samples but also expensive testing and significant time for the test, which frequently are not available for routine drillability predictions. Hence, a multitude of methods and techniques has been proposed for estimating UCS from various indirect and/or non-destructive measurements, or combination of measurements with neural networks, such as point load index, block punch index, unit weight, and apparent porosity, water absorption by weight, sonic velocity, and Schmidt hardness. The many proposed approaches are critically reviewed and the results are compared, and what becomes apparent is that after many years, not only in mining but also in oil-well drilling, accurate indirect determination of UCS is still an elusive goal. An equation to predict UCS from sonic velocity data is suggested based on several data sets reported in the literature. Use of the specific energy equation with UCS or sonic data and utilization of drilling data allows an estimation of the efficiency of energy transfer from the bit to the rock and of the friction coefficient. Analysis of data reported in the literature, both from laboratory and field studies, has shown that this approach is sound and enables the determination of energy transfer efficiencies and friction coefficients, which for the cases studied range between 15 and 30% and 0.15 and 0.30 respectively. Thus, the suggested data analysis approach allows drillers to focus on inefficiencies and optimize drilling practices in future campaigns. As part of the Woodrow Wilson Replacement Bridge project several damaged wetland and environmental areas were to be mitigated. One of the mitigation projects consisted of constructing a Denil fish ladder around Peirce Mill Dam in Rock Creek National Park, Washington, D.C. The dam is a historic structure operated by the National Park Service. The fish ladder is located between the east abutment of the dam and Beach Drive, a major collector road. Construction of the fish ladder required removal of a portion of the east abutment and an excavation that extended about 22-ft below the pavement of Beach Ave. It was not possible to close Beach Drive except for very brief intervals or at night; therefore, a support of excavation system that would minimize disruption to the public was required. The high groundwater required that the groundwater be cut off prior to excavation; the random rubble and soil fill, and shallow but erratic rock surface precluded driving sheet piling. A jet grout system was selected because the grout probe could penetrate the rubble fill, stabilize a variety of soil conditions, and cut off the ground water prior to excavation. It was not possible to construct a stable wall without tiebacks or soil nails. Given the schedule and tight working conditions it was decided that soil nails through the jet grout wall facing would be the most cost effective method, as it did not reduce the working space as rakers would and would be more cost effective than prestressed tiebacks.

THIS paper does not deal with all sands used in the glass industry in Missouri; it covers only that used in the plate-glass factory at Crystal City. However, it is probably safe to say that other sands, produced throughout the state for this purpose, are of identical nature. The glass sand used in Missouri is commonly called the St. Peter deposit, which is ascribed to the Ordovician Rock series in the form of sandstone. This St. Peter deposit, aside from a few small outliers, covers a large area of eastern Missouri. It forms, through a broad curve, the northeast margin of the typical Ozark region between Cape Girardeau on the southeast and Mineola, Montgomery County, on the northwest. The belt is extremely irregular, varying from one to ten miles in width; its length is 150 miles in a straight line. The outcrop near the entrance to the Crystal City mine appears in the form of a sandstone bluff approximately 30 ft. high, running along Plattin Creek (Fig. 1). Above the sand rock an overburden of Joachim limestone appears, which thickens to nearly 300 ft. and forms the hill commonly called Buck Knob. Test holes where drilled at various points and the drillers' log indicate that the St. Peter deposit ranges in thickness from 63 to 71 feet. PROPERTIES OF THE ST. In 1951, Tata Steel became the pioneer in Asia by setting up its first ever washery in West Bokaro Colliery. The first beneficiation plant used to produce clean coal of 19% ash with chance cone. Feed size of chance washers were -75 mm to +6 mm. The fine coal (-6 mm) were used directly. With change in technology,in 1986,chance cones were replaced by DM cyclones and coal was washed in two circuits. In the coarse circuit -13 mm to +0.5 mm coal was washed in two stages while the fine coal of -0.5 mm was treated in froth floatation cell. With further improvement in the process the higher ash raw coal was feed to produce clean coal of 13% ash. In 1998, DSM cyclones were replaced by scrolled Evolute design cyclone which has Ep of 0.020 to 0.025 ranges resulting in increase efficiency of separation. With the increase in demand of clean coal, lower seam proportion has increased in raw coal production. The washability studies of individual seams indicated large difference in the seam characteristics in terms of washability and specific gravity cut points of the individual seams. So washing all seams together had resulted in frequent change in the character of coal and warrants frequent changes in the operating parameters of the plant in which the separating efficiency comes down and ultimately resulted in yield loss initially. With increase in knowledge and experience in coal washing the solution to this problem was achieved by adopting, seam-wise washing which is enabling process engineers by keeping set point for longer periods there by to enhance the separation efficiency. The U.S. coal mining industry consumes a significant amount of energy, primarily diesel fuel and electricity. The continuous global increase in energy demand, high energy prices, and environmental issues related to carbon dioxide emission represent a substantial challenge for the mining industry. This paper presents a result of research work on development of an integrated data environment system for analysis and control of energy consumption in a surface coal mine. A case study on an operating surface coal mine is carried out to demonstrate the practical application of the developed system. The research work presented here may be used by mining professionals to help provide the answers to the crucial questions of when, where, and how much energy is being used. "INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. 5/ No reports were made on motor gasolines Bold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. 6/The present report presents analytical data for 1,499 samples, representing the products of approximately 105 companies. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gaso¬line are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for these analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items and brands comprising each group is as follows; Regular-price, 872 samples, 266 items, and 83 brands; -premium-price, 584 samples, 217 items, and 72 brands; third-grade, 43 samples, 32 items, and 21 brands. "Stringent environmental performance criteria and regulations, and the desire to minimize water use have made membrane-based treatment and separation processes an attractive option. This has lead to many advances in all aspects of the technology. Membrane separation processes have found application in sea water desalination, brackish water treatment, decontamination of ground water, and wastewater treatment. Development of membranes with better resistance to harsh feed conditions has created new opportunities for the broader application of membrane separation technologies to mineral processing streams. There are examples in mineral processing operations, including treatment of acidic drainage, pre-concentration of pregnant leaching solution in heap leaching operations, separation of acids and metals from waste streams and intermediate process streams, as well as gold and cyanide recovery from a heap leaching operation. This paper provides a brief overview of membrane technology principles, followed by a discussion of current membrane technology applications relevant to the mining and mineral processing industry. The paper further explores the potential for the application of membrane separation as an integrated component in mineral processing operations.INTRODUCTION Increased regulatory pressures, emphasis on water conservation, and scarcity of water in arid regions have resulted in substantial changes in industrial practices in recent years. As a result, many industries have become more open to adopting innovative technologies such as membrane separation. The mining industry, which is typically very conservative, has adopted membrane separation as an effective end-of-pipe solution for effluent and acidic drainage (AD) treatment; however, its use as an integrated component in plant operations has progressed more slowly. With increasingly stringent environmental regulations coupled with the desire for low- and zero-discharge operations, the use of membrane separation technology for achieving acceptable environmental performance may be unavoidable in the future. The relatively small footprint requirement, versatility, and modular construction of membrane separation units facilitate their introduction into existing processes with a suitable feed stream. Membrane separation is not a stand-alone process that provides the ultimate solution to water and wastewater treatment; however, it can often be economically added to conventional waste treatment plants to increase throughput and/or decrease contaminant output (Mortazavi, 2008). Although membrane separation technology has become an established separation technique that is widely used in drinking water production and other industries, it is still considered an emerging technology within the mining and mineral processing industry. This technology offers many potential benefits such as clean water recovery from wastewater, significant reduction of volume requiring conventional treatment, decreased usage of reagents, and acid recovery, all of which lead to increased treatment efficiencies and lower reagent consumption. This could translate to smaller and more efficient plants with lower capital and operating costs and lower environmental impacts. Plant expansion may be facilitated by incorporating a membrane separation unit operation in order to utilize existing treatment systems at higher throughputs."

The impact of seismic loading on open pit slope stability in Australia is often only considered where the slopes are located adjacent to tailings facilities or other major infrastructure. The debate regarding application of seismic loading in open pit design in Australia is usually founded on limited reporting on significant damage of open pit operations during earthquakes, the common perception that earthquakes do not occur in Australia or that they are unlikely to occur during the mine life of the mine. It is frequently overlooked that pit slopes that have withstood strong earthquakes in highly active seismic regions are often designed under strict seismic guidelines. This paper discusses the factors that impact earthquake performance of open mine slopes. These factors include topography, slope geometry, rock material and mass properties, water management and intrinsic pit design. Further, the paper presents insights into the characteristics of earthquake activity in Australia such as magnitude distribution, earthquake depths, areas prone of earthquake activity and general seismic hazard that are relevant to pit design. Guidelines are provided on the conditions and circumstances under which earthquake design in open pit mining should be considered. In addition, this paper provides recommendation on the applicable methods for assessment of the impacts of earthquake loading on pit slope stability.

In September 2009, Newmont began the commissioning of a 3 stage crushing and milling circuit at its Boddington Gold Operation in Western Australia. The Boddington ore has been recognized as one of the hardest and most abrasive ores treated to date and this played a pivotal role in the selection of crushing and HPGR technology for this operation as opposed to the more conventional SABC circuit. This paper will examine the scale up from laboratory to pilot plant and full scale operation of the crushing circuit. There have been many challenges to overcome in the first 18 months of operation; however, the HPGRs have in general met design expectations and performance is expected to improve further with ongoing design changes

Rhenium occurs in very small quantities (12).4 In order for the Federal Bureau of Mines to conduct an investigation of rhenium sources and methods of extraction, it was necessary to devise improved techniques for detecting and measuring minute quantities of the metal. A modification of the procedure of Malouf and White (46) was developed which can be used to detect rhenium in concentrations as small as 0.1 part per million and can be used to measure quantities of 1.0 part per million. It can be used for the analysis of siliceous and calcareous ores, of molybdenite concentrates, of fumes, of flue dusts, and of other metallurgical products. Development of the method involved devising an amine extraction procedure for separating rhenium from all interfering elements except tungsten and a selective distillation procedure for separating rhenium from tungsten. Adoption of these separation procedures permits use of large samples and precise determination of rhenium by colorimetric analysis of the thiocyanate complex of rhenium by means of a spectrophotometer.

An abandened breakwater, located at the rear of No. 2 berth in Dongdu Port area of Xiamen City, was not cleaned thoroughly when the backfilling of sand started. The uncleaned stone layer was about 2 to 3 meters deep, with the average piece of stone weighing about 1 to 3 kN. A large grain storing house, 220X 60m2 in area, was designed and built at the above mentioned complicated site. The foundation of the grain house are made up of the cast-in-situ piles. It is well known that it is difficult for the submarine engineering drill to go down through such large-sized stones. Having com-pared the various plans, a final decision has been made which involves explosions with small amounts of charge plus cone bit in the enlarging of the size of the pores. Such a method has successfully prevented the pores from slumping and made it possible to fulfill the project without any difficulties. This paper also introduces the ways in effectively dealing with each individual stone.
