Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) is a copper, gold and magnetite mining and processing operation located 38km north east of Cloncurry. The EHM ore body has an average grade of 0.9% copper (chalcopyrite), 0.5g/t gold and 22% magnetite.Open pit mining commenced in March 1998, but EHM transitioned to underground mining in December 2012, extending the life of operations beyond 2024. The underground mine currently produces up to 3Mt/year of ore, hauled up a decline by truck. This figure shall double in 2014 with the completion of a 1000m shaft. The EHM Concentrator has a nameplate capacity of 10Mt/year. In June 2011, Xstrata Copper acquired the Mount Margaret resource to supplement underground production and utilise the full capacity of the Concentrator. The Mount Margaret Mining (MMM) operation was established to develop the five deposits making up the resource by way of open pit mining.Copper concentrate is produced by the EHM Concentrator via grinding, flotation and dewatering circuits. The grinding circuit comprises a SAG and ball mill in a closed AB configuration. Flotation consists of a rougher train, regrind and three stages of cleaning, with the tail from the first stage reporting to the tailings thickener.The mineralogy of the MMM ores is complex, comprising fine textures of active pyrite, copper oxides, native copper, clay and secondary copper sulphides. This paper provides an overview of the metallurgical test work completed to forecast the performance of the MMM ores through the EHM Concentrator and identify flow sheet modifications for maximising copper recovery and producing a saleable concentrate. A technologic group such as the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division of the Bureau of Mines, which conducts research on many of the complicated and frequently interrelated problems of extracting crude oil and natural gas from the ground, transporting them to market or to places for subsequent treatment, and manufacturing products, should report progress from time to time. Engineers and others who apply the results obtained by this division are closely associated with its personnel, because may of the problems are attached cooperatively with groups in industry. Some of this cooperation is formal, as exemplified by work now in progress under cooperative agreements with the States of Oklahoma, Kansas, and others, but much of it is informal, prompted by the desire to be mutually helpful in the public interest. Furthermore, the published reports of the Bureau on subjects pertaining to petroleum and natural-gas technology come to the direct attention of a relatively large number of persons, whose interest in results and appreciation of the value of this type of work have caused them to be kept currently informed regarding available data.

In addition to the normal work and that pertaining to strategic minerals, the Metallurgical Division has been made responsible for carrying on major investigations in the development of processes' for the treatment of low-grade domestic manganese ores that heretofore have failed to yield products suitable for the preparation of ferromanganese, an alloy essential to every ton of steel produced. These investigations are particularly important at this time because of their part in tucking this country self-sufficient with regard to manganese when the stock-piled ore becomes e exhausted and as foreign shipments of ferro-grade ore are cut off. The results indicate that there is a good probability of accomplishing this objective, while at the same time conservation may be promoted through the use of normally useless material from the large, low-grade ore deposits.

This paper briefly describes the principal commercial and near-commercial deposits of gold-bearing gravel and the important placer-mining operations in Lemhi County, Idaho. It is on of a series on western mining districts being published by the Bureau of Mines. This paper is based on a field survey of the placer-mining districts of Lemhi County in the summer of 1938. Available information concerning gold-bearing gravels was obtained from prospectors and claim owners; operators supplied the data on mining operations. No attempt was made actually to test the gravels. The principal object of the examination was to indicate placer areas worthy of further investigation by prospective operators.

Frithia humilis is an endangered succulent plant species. Its distribution range overlaps with the coal fields of Mpumalanga and it is therefore threatened by opencast mining activities in particular. One of the 11 known populations of F. humilis was translocated from a licensed coal mining site to three suitable receptor sites within the species? distribution range. A longterm monitoring programme was initiated to track the progress of the newly established populations. Temporal trends in population demography, size classes, and fecundity were recorded. Population numbers of size classes fluctuated annually. However, flower frequency increased over time and seedling recruitment contributed significantly to population growth. Receptor sites with similar geological conditions to the donor site had more persistent cohorts, which suggest that such sites should receive priority during the translocation of endangered edaphic specialists. This study not only confirms that a Frithia humilis population can successfully establish after a translocation, but also serves as an important baseline for future comparative purposes to gauge the long-term success of the translocation effort.

The 26th Peruvian Mining Convention (Convención de Ingeneieros de Minas del Perú) was held Sept. 15 through 19, 2003, in Arequipa. The convention was sponsored by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (Instituto de Ingeneiros de Minas del Peru). The Institute has been organizing these events since 1954. They are now held every other year. The conventions spotlight Peru’s mineral resources and have contributed to the tremendous growth of the Peruvian mining industry. This year’s meeting consisted of technical sessions, forums, field trips and social activities. It was held at the Tecsup Institute of Technology of Arequipa. More than 3,000 mining professionals attended. As always, the meeting was well organized, and participants expressed gratitude to the organizing committee for another successful meeting.

Contract 240 of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link comprises construction of twin4.7 km long running tunnels through a densely populated area of East London. The tunnels were constructed by EPBM in Sands and Sandy Clays, passing 4.4 m below the existing London Underground tunnels, and at depths of 20–30m below ground level beneath the Great Eastern railway lines into London Liverpool Street and a series of railway bridges and hundreds of buildings. This paper describes how the project team managed the challenges relating to the issue of settlement: mitigating settlement effects, prioritising the structures to be assessed, controlling resource expenditure by incentives and flexible response to urgent work relating to unforeseen events such as ground collapse and discovery of unusual structures.

NIOSH has developed an active proximity warning system called HASARD (Hazardous Area Signaling and Ranging Device) for warning workers as they approach known dangerous areas around heavy mining equipment and other dangerous work zones. HASARD is composed of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter generates a 60-kHz magnetic field using one or more wire loop antennas. Each antenna is adjusted to establish a magnetic field pattern for each hazardous area. The receiver, worn by the worker, is a magnetic field strength meter. The received signal is compared against preset levels which are calibrated to identify levels of danger. The receiver outputs can include visual, audible, and vibratory indicators and it can also be made to disable machine functions. HASARD was field tested on a Joy 12 continuous miner, a Komatsu 210 M Haulpak, and on a highwall launch vehicle. Slight modifications were made for each application. HASARD provided warnings as designed and proved to be rugged enough to withstand the harshest of production environments.

This paper presents the results of the geotechnical investigation for the repair of the Fashion Island Boulevard Bridge, Bridge No. 350160, in San Mateo, California. The concrete, precast girder bridge suffered considerable damage during the Loma Prieta earthquake. The existing 36-inch, precast, prestressed concrete piles cracked and spalled at their tops. Based on analyses performed by Biggs Cardosa Associates, structural engineers, the piles did not have sufficient strength and ductility to resist the dead plus seismic loads specified in the Caltrans "Bridge Design Specifications". Additional support for the bridge was needed and the repair strategy consisted of installing large diameter pipe piles at the existing bent and abutment locations. This paper describes the geotechnical engineering analysis and design decisions for the large diameter pile design.

In underground mines worldwide, a large number of short and small diameter slot holes need to be excavated. Herrenknecht has developed and built a new boxholeboring machine based on the well-proven Microtunnellingpipe jacking technology. The innovative Boxhole Boring Machine significantly increases work safety and requires only minimal drift dimensions. The high and consistent production rates that can be achieved result in enormous time savings compared to conventional drill and blast excavations. GENERAL ASPECTS In gold, copper and ore mines ventilation shafts are required to prepare block caving operations, to discharge ore onto the transportation level and to provide evacuation shafts. A high level of occupational safety and efficiency is the main objective when drilling vertical or inclined shafts. The faster and more safely shafts can be constructed, the earlier the actual production in the mine can start or be continued. Mechanized or conventional methods (drill&blast) that have been used to date only partially meet the required safety standards and fail to provide the requested production rates.

When conducting gold leach tests on free milling gold ores which method is the best, bottle rolls or the stirred beaker test? Recently, a client requested that gold leach tests be conducted using the stirred beaker methodology. When asked why, because the laboratory was set up to conduct tests using the bottle rolls technique the reply was that the stirred beaker leach test would replicate the plant more closely. Not wishing to upset the client, the instructions were followed. However, the opportunity was taken to complete additional tests so that the two leach procedures could be compared. Further, this comparison was completed on two different gold ores as well as a number of different grinding media types.This paper provides a description of the two laboratory techniques employed, and presents the results of these parallel tests. Interestingly, the assertion that the stirred beaker methodology more closely replicated plant performance was not validated. In fact, the results obtained using this procedure were noticeably different from those observed in the plant, with lower recoveries and significantly higher cyanide consumptions. The bottle rolls test however more adequately replicated plant performance in terms of recovery and cyanide consumption. The Kauri Block (Hauraki Hill) andMatawai Valley epithermal vein systems, near Coromandel township, are hosted by hydrothermally altered Miocene andesites and Mesozoic greywackes of the Coromandel VolcanicZone. The hydrological setting of both geothermal systems was probably that of an andesitic volcanic arc. Two types of veins are recognised: 1. Simple veins composed of fine comb quartz, and 2. Complex (breccia) veins composed of vein fragments of sulphide-bearing, chalcedonic silica cemented by saccharoidal and fine comb quartz.   Pyrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, and gold form the ore minerals. Both deposits historically exploited hypogene and supergene bonanza gold.   At Hauraki Hill, breccia veins up to 7m wide contain abundant fragments of recrystallised colloform banded-crustiform textured quartz veins ('Golden Cross' style) and were probably major channels for ascending deep mineralising fluids. Alteration assemblages are zoned with the higher elevations of Hauraki Hill-Bunkers Hill characterised by strong kaolinite alteration whereas deeper levels are dominated by illitic clays.   At Matawai, complex veins and hydrothermal breccias pinch and swell, and inflect, within a total width of veining and alteration that exceeds 50 m. The greywacke host rocks are altered to an assemblage of illitesmectite, quartz, chlorite and pyrite although there are pockets of kaolinite.   The proposed genesis of veins and ores in both deposits invokes episodic rapid mixing (quenching) of hot mineralising reservoir fluids with cool acid condensate waters, whilst acidification and increased fO2 triggered gold deposition. These hydrothermal systems heated up during their later stages and at Matawai visible gold was deposited from a late mesothermal stage. The main conclusion is that the northwest CVZ has excellent potential for large gold deposits (= 30 tonnes contained gold).

The Thames gold-silver deposits are part of the Hauraki goldfield, situated within the Miocene to Pliocene calc-alkaline Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The Waitangi vein system is one of the mineralised ore shoots in the Thames district. The Thames gold deposits are characterised by shallow level epithermal vein mineralisation with phyllic to advanced argillic alteration assemblages and abundant sulphide minerals including pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite. Gold occurs as electrum in association with sulphide minerals. Microprobe analyses.of sphalerite grains from the Waitangi deposit mostly range from 0.8 to 1.5 mole % FeS, although one sample contains 9.5 mole % FeS. Arsenopyrite from Waitangi yields a range from 33.1 to 34.6 atomic As (%). There is no discernible correlation between the FeS content of sphalerite and gold grade in the Waitangi deposit suggesting that gold deposition is probably not controlled by changes in temperature and activity of sulphur aS2 that control the FeS content of sphalerite. The possible causes for gold deposition are thought to be boiling, mixing and changes in pH. Sulphur isotope analyses of mixed sphalerite-galena and sphalerite-galena-ehalcopyrite samples yield a narrow range of d34SCDT values (-1.0 to 0.9 ë;n=5), whereas late spongy pyrite gives unusually light sulphur isotope values (-16.7 to -27.9 ë; n=4). The sulphur isotopic values of base metal sulphides from Waitangi suggest that the sulphur was derived from a magmatic source. However, the source of light sulphur in the late pyrite grains is not known. Preliminary fluid inclusion+studies indicate homogenisation temperatures between 173¦ and 284¦C and salinities of 0.23.0 NaCI equiv. wt % (uncorrected for C02). Vein quartz at Waitangi yields d18OSMOW values from 6.8 to 12.7 ë (n=23). The calculated oxygen isotopic composition of ore fluids is between -2.1 to 3.8 ë at 250¦C and -0.1-5.8 ë at 300¦C. Oxygen isotope analyses have revealed significant variations in d18O values with elevation and gold grades. Zones of gold enrichment coincide with a zone of variable oxygen isotope values at the top of the vein system, where boiling and/or fluid mixing most likely occurred. Oxygen isotope values varying with gold grades within the Waitangi conduits suggest that d18O values may be useful in targeting bonanza grade gold mineralisation in epithermal vein systems.

The project involves structural repairs, modifications and new construction requiring underpinning and temporary supports, custom framing details, and construction staging procedures to meet stringent limitations within the operating transit station and around the Columbus Circle street intersections.

I. INTRODUCTORY. IN the dry regions of the globe many silver-deposits display certain remarkable features which at the same time are so totally unlike anything met with among ore-bodies elsewhere, that they have long presented exceptional difficulties not only to a satisfactory explanation of their origin, but to economical milling. A most striking peculiarity of these ores is the haloid character of many of their bonanzas. To this fact more than to any other may be ascribed most of the unusual uncertainties of mining-operations in desert countries-the marvelous local richness of the ores under certain conditions and the often abrupt transition, to utter poverty; the inadequacy of ordinary prospecting customs and the constant devising of new exploratory methods; the unaccountable losses in smelting and the continual change in treatment-practice. For these anomalies certain climatic conditions seem to be chiefly responsible.

A series of tests was carried out on one of the rock-pebble milling circuits treating complex nickel ores at Kambalda Nickel Operations of Western Mining Corporation. A mathematical model to describe the behaviour of a 508 mm hydrocyclone was developed from the data.A "flat" reduced efficiency curve was observed for the system. This was attributed to a marked difference in the specific gravity of different size fractions of the feed. A modified approach in describing the shape or the reduced efficiency curve resulted in accurate prediction of the hydrocyclone performance.

Ventilation modelling is used to evaluate ventilation system performance. This paper describes modelling to assess potential changes to a single entry longwall ventilation circuit to improve ventilation and gas management. The longwall panel is extracting a 215 metre face in a 1.5 metre coal seam at a depth of 900 to 1000 metres below surface. The 1.5 metre B seam is located approximately 25 metres below the main 3.0 metre A seam and the gas content of both coal seams is approximately 20 to 25 m3/t. The B seam is extracted prior to the A seam and the mine relies on fracturing of the overlying strata to induce gas emission from the A seam to reduce the gas content prior to mining. Longwall operations in the B seam are constrained by limited ventilation and high gas emissions. Due in part to statutory limits on gas concentration and air velocity, the average longwall production rate is approximately 700 t per day.Gate roads in the B seam are single entry, developed using road headers and supported with steel arches. Additional timber cog support is installed to reduce roadway closure from abutment loading. Due to the slow advance of gate road development, mine management were reluctant to consider significant mine design changes, such as two heading gate roads; therefore, the investigation focused on determining the extent to which ventilation and gas emission impacted on longwall production performance, while recommending short-term, low-cost actions to improve ventilation and gas management to support increased longwall production.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. "Regardless of orebody value, at some stage, the pit will reach a depth where the reward for mining wider and/or deeper is not justified by the anticipated returns. ‘Last-blast’ strategies may help to some degree in recovering additional quantities of the resource but when a pit remains, there is often significant value left in the ground. In addition, in many cases, one or many good reasons may dictate why going underground and pursuing the orebody below the pit is also not justifiable. Whereas the company can hopefully move on to other more prospective parts of the orebody, the remaining options for the pit are usually very limited. Typically the pit is either held for potentially more favourable future pit expansion opportunities or it could be used for an alternative purpose, such as tailings or waste storage. This paper will present an alternative option that involves the direct extraction of values using in situ recovery (ISR) methods to recover additional value metals from the walls and/or floor of the pit. ISR involves circulating a fluid through the remaining orebody, solubilising the target metal and subsequently returning the solution to the surface for metal recovery. ISR is not the panacea to all but it has been employed selectively in the minerals industry for some time and the production of metals, such as uranium, rely heavily on this approach. ISR is not yet considered by many operators as an approach to compete with open pit or underground mining, largely because of the perceived limitations of this approach and the perceptions of risk. Rapid recent development of tools and enabling technologies relevant to ISR have made us reconsider the most economic approach to extracting many other metals from known mineral systems, even those currently listed as subeconomic. We suggest that ISR has the potential to make mine operators rethink the end of the pit life and adopt an innovative ISR approach to work toward a more complete recovery of value metals from existing pits.Citation:Kuhar, L L and Robinson, D J, 2016.
