Dense medium cyclones are the preferred means for cleaning 1/2 in. x 14Mesh to 28Mesh (12.7 mm x 1.0 mm to 0.6 mm) raw coal and are becoming a common choice for cleaning raw coal from a nominal top size of 2-1/2 in. to 3 in. (63.5 mm to 76.2mm) down to 14 Mesh to 28Mesh (1.0 mm to 0.6 mm). During the last ten years, dense medium cyclone circuitry design has undergone changes which have combined to improve process efficiency. This paper describes these improvements and compares present day design with the design used prior to the mid 1980's. Improvements in the following areas are described: Raw coal desliming, cyclone configuration, drain and rinse applications, dilute medium circuitry, and instrumentation and control.

In this paper we present the results of preliminary investigations into the applicability of new laboratory scale tests for the prediction of operating gap and specific throughput in high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). The work is a part of the CAMIRO HPGR research program being conducted at the University of British Columbia, which aims to develop a suite of small-scale tests and procedures for the selection and sizing of HPGRs. A focus of the presented study is to test sample types in terms of their terra-mechanics based characteristics and relate them to specific throughput and gap results from pilot HPGR testing on the same samples.

bauma 2004 will feature a couple of firsts for one of the world’s largest construction and building materials machinery exhibitions. The event is scheduled for March 29 through April 4 of next year at the New Munich Trade Fair Center in Munich, Germany. For the first time, bauma will feature an exhibition area dedicated to mining equipment and technology. Also for the first time, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) will be a partner region of bauma.

Laboratory strength and deformation testing of freshly blasted sandstone and claystone overburden from Jeebropilly colliery in Queensland and in-situ plate-bearing tests on four backfills of different ages showed that the bearing capacity of backfill is a function mainly of compaction, not of age. The modulus or stiffness of the backfill is significantly increased by previous loading, in some cases up to threefold. Backfill material experiences some compaction through the passage of mining vehicles, likely to provide a bearing capacity that will support normal construction activities; the limited testing performed suggested that completed backfills are capable of supporting loads of up to 200 kN/m2 while sustaining displacements acceptable for a wide range of residential and industrial uses, but may be susceptible to collapse settlements due to saturation in the long term

The reduction process of pre-oxidized ilmenite concentrate powder in 30%CO–70%N2 atmosphere was characterized by thermogravimetric and differential thermogravimetric (TG-DTG) analysis system at the temperature from 1073 to1223 K. The isothermal reduction results show that the reduction process is divided into three stages and the corresponding apparent activation energies are obtained by iso-conversional method and model-fitting method, respectively. For the first stage, the conversion degree increases sharply with increasing time, and the reduction process is controlled by the random nucleation and subsequent growth model (A2 model). For the second stage, the conversion degree increases slowly with increasing time, and the reduction process is controlled by the diffusion of carbon monoxide in the reduced layer (D1 model). For the third stage, the reduction processes at different temperatures are controlled by the diffusion of carbon monoxide in the reduced layer (1073 K and D1 model), phase boundary chemical reaction (1123 K and R2 model), random nucleation and subsequent growth (1173 to 1223 K, A2, and A3 models), respectively. For the whole reduction process, the apparent activation energies obtained by iso-conversional method and model-fitting method are 71.72 and 31.92 kJ mol−1 , respectively

Bureau of Mines studies of mine roof fall problem in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed of southern West Virgania and southwestern Virginia have established that type and sequence of rock are significant factors in roof competence. The poorest conditions occur where the immediate roof consists of slump structures and slickensided rock. The best conditions occur where the roof consists of a sequence that coarsens upward from shale to massive sandy shale. A small manual of color photographs of rock types was devised to aid in identifying drill cores. Proper identifications should enhance the prediction of areas of potential roof problems in advance of mining.

Large language models (LLMs) have generated a lot of hype since ChatGPT was released in early 2023. In essence, they allow people to interact with computer systems through natural language and have the ability to generate highly complex text, images and videos (Patil and Gudivada, 2024). It is clear that this technology has significant potential, however most mining companies have not yet found practical applications for it within their operations. In this paper, we present a range of such applications along with the tactical considerations associated with developing and implementing them. We have identified use cases across a variety of operational and functional areas within the mining industry and evaluated them based on their potential business value and ease of implementation. Firstly, we provide an overview of how LLMs work and a review of how LLMs are being applied in other industries to provide best practice inspiration for mining. Next, we present a list of possible applications in mining and a critical assessment of each use case. This section also includes a technical deep dive into the different methodologies for developing the technologies as well as an analysis of barriers to adoption within mining organisations. Finally, we share a discussion of the potential path forward for LLMs in mining and the impact they could have on the industry. We analyse the potential differences between early adopters and laggards in the artificial intelligence (AI) space. This research draws on interviews and surveys with artificial intelligence experts as well as mining subject matter experts to connect cutting edge thought leadership with the specific problems faced by our industry.

Mine drainage and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, federal and local governments, and the general public. This publication and its companion three volumes are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 24-29, 1994. There were twelve sessions (69 papers) that dealt with mine drainage, including modeling, geochemistry, prediction, treatment, control strategies, characterization, hydrology, and case studies. These sessions comprise volumes 1 and 2. The six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with reclamation and revegetation of disturbed lands are included in volume 3. Volume 4 includes the six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with such topical issues as fires at abandoned mine sites, subsidence, hydrology, mine wastes, and policy. Poster session presentations are represented by 49 papers and 92 abstracts that have been placed in the back of volumes 2, 3, and 4, consistent with the subject of that volume.

Whilst a significant body of research has been carried into air overpressure levels that arise as a result of the use of explosives, few published studies have actually tried to relate the movement of a quarry face to the resulting air overpressure produced. The aim of this preliminary investigation was to monitor a number of quarry blasts at two different limestone quarries. The first using multiple separately initiated deck charges in a multi borehole blast, the second using single column charges in a multi borehole blast.

"The work on the physical chemistry of steelmaking, as carried out at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with Carnegie Institute of Technology and, the Metallurgical Advisory Board, has covered a series of fundamental studies on the action of oxygen in liquid steel and the application of the findings to open-hearth operation. The staff has varied from 14 to 23 men per year, some of whom have been Bureau of Mines physical chemists and metallurgists, others research engineers of the Metallurgical Advisory Board, and the remainder graduate students employed as research fellows at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. The work on the laboratory studies, and particularly on slag systems, has been in charge of G. R. Fitterer, associate metallurgist, Bureau of Mines, while the plant work has been under the direction of C. F. Christopher, research engineer of the Metallurgical Advisory Board. In all, some 16 physical chemists and metallurgists and 24 research fellows have taken part in the experimental work. Advantage has been taken of the opportunity for cooperation with the University of Pittsburg to have certain phases of this program made the subject of graduate work, particularly the laboratory studies on the deoxidation of steel with manganese-silicon alloys.The general method of studying oxygen has been, first, to determine the solubility of the various oxides in liquid steel. To date the solubility of Fe0 in steel has been determined, over a wide temperature range.3 The straight-line relationship in the plot of solubility versus temperature indicated that under a slag of 100 per cent Fe0 the oxygen was present in the steel as dissolved FeO. A further conclusion drawn from this work was that the solubility of FeO in the metal was proportional at a given temperature to the mol fraction of Fe0 in the slag if the slag contained a large excess of basic constituents. This result was determined from a study of the solubility of Fe0 under slags containing lime and iron oxide in various proportions. These data have been used extensively in determining the saturation of a bath of open-hearth steel under any conditions of slag composition, and results to be given later showed that the solubility curves are consistent with the results obtained in practice."

The Clearwater Deposit, a small occurrence of massive-sulphide mineralization enclosed in an envelope of disseminated-sulphide mineralization, was discovered as a result of an aeroelectromagnetic survey in New Brunswick in 1955. Subsequently, additional flights were made over the deposit and various ground follow-up methods were employed to ascertain the nature of their response. All methods proved to be capable of indicating the occurrence with varying degrees of precision. This paper is a presentation and a discussion of the magnetic and electromagnetic data, both airborne and ground, and the self-potential data obtained over this deposit. The attention of Canadian mining exploration companies was initially focussed on New Brunswick by the discovery, in 1953, of the Brunswick ore body. Ground electromagnetic surveys were of considerable assistance in locating and developing this deposit. In the following year, 1954, the Heath Steele base-metal deposits were discovered by employing an airborne electromagnetic device and ground electromagnetic surveys to follow-up the airborne indications. These discoveries demonstrated clearly that both airborne and ground electromagnetic techniques were applicable for locating the near-surface deposits of massive sulphides present in this region. Airborne electromagnetic equipment became available on a contract basis through Aeromagnetic Surveys Limited early in 1955 and was used extensively thereafter throughout a large portion of northern New Brunswick. It was as a result of one of these surveys with Aeromagnetic Surveys Limited equipment in the summer of 1955 that the Clearwater Deposit was detected. The airborne anomaly was located on the ground by means of an electromagnetic survey using a Swedish Slingram unit. During 1956, the region was investigated more thoroughly- in the hope that other sulphide bodies might be located. Airborne electromagnetic coverage was extended and the Clearwater Deposit itself was used as a testing ground for the various methods and types of equipment currently in use in New Brunswick. In this paper com prative data are presented for the airborne magnetic, airborne electromagnetic, ground magnetic and ground electromagnetic surveys over this deposit. The ground electromagnetic instruments used were the McPhar vertical-loop unit and the Slingram and Boliden horizontal-loop units. Self-potential surveys were carried out with a McPhar unit. From the geophysical point of view, all ground electrical methods employed indicated the presence and the extent of the massive-sulphide mineralization with a good degree of accuracy. The recent drop in the value of the South African Rand has resulted in an increased export value for South African coal and has lead to new coal reserves becoming available for mining. Very often these reserves are in close proximity to existing structures and utilities thus calling for stringent blast control measures to keep the risk of vibration, air blast and fly rock damage to a minimum.

A Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) is being planned at the site of the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota, under the sponsorship of the US National Science Foundation (NSF) in cooperation with the US Department of Energy (DOE). This national facility will host a variety of multidisciplinary science and engineering experiments including physics experiments that require shielding from cosmogenic radiation. Geotechnical mapping was performed in 2010 in large excavations of the Davis Campus at the 4850 Level of the former Homestake Mine. LIDAR mapping included laser scanning using a red light laser scanner and 288 Mpixels 360° still camera. The resulting vector map with the photographs digitally draped over the model, was used to create an accurate, virtual model of the excavations. For model verification, the laser scanning was accompanied by surveying and manual mapping of the geology and rock structure. The immediate use of the model was to perform structural analysis and interpretation of geology needed for the design of the DUSEL?s super large excavations. The second round of scanning, after the application of shotcrete to the excavations walls, will be used as a technical blueprint to assess the effectiveness of shotcrete application.

In 2012 the Bureau of Meteorology, under the banner of the Water Accounting Standards Board, released the Australian Water Accounting Standard 1 (AWAS 1). This standard has been in development since 2007 with key milestones being the release of the Preliminary Australian Water Accounting Standard in 2009 and the exposure draft of the Australian Water Accounting Standard in 2010. Throughout this period, the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs Water Accounting Framework has developed concurrently with the Australian standards and the standards have informed elements of the framework. However, the framework is not identical to the standard as the objectives between the two are different. The objective of the Water Accounting Framework is to create consistency in water reporting of the minerals industry and to assist companies reporting to corporate sustainability initiatives. The objective of AWAS 1 is to provide information to water management bodies to facilitate decisions about the allocation of water resources. Companies are to report on an annual basis - not only physical flows of water but contractual requirements to supply and obtain water - regardless of whether the transaction has been fulfilled in the reporting period. In contrast, the Water Accounting Framework only reports on flows that have physically happened. The paper will provide summary information on aspects of AWAS 1 that are most relevant to the minerals industry, show the alignment and differences between AWAS 1 and the Water Accounting Framework and explain how to obtain the information for the AWAS 1 reporting statements.CITATION:Danoucaras, A N and Woodley, A, 2013. The vapor pressures of manganese in equilibrium with several alloys in the iron-manganese-carbon system between 1200° and 1275°K have been measured using the Knudsen effusion technique in conjunction with a vacuum microbalance. The effect of orifice area of the effusion cell upon the measured pressure has been determined. The binary iron-manganese system shows small negative departures from ideality, and the system of mixed carbides, (Fe, Mn)7C3, in equilibrium with graphite behaves ideally. THIS work is a continuation of the investigations in which the Knudsen effusion method has been used to determine thermodynamic activities in systems and at temperatures of interest to metallurgists. In a previous publication,' the free energy of formation of Mn7C3 was determined and some preliminary work on the solution behavior of this carbide with the hypothetical "Fe7C3" was reported. The present work deals with this latter topic and also includes data on the binary ir-on-manganese system. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The Knudsen effusion method was used to measure the vapor pressure of manganese in both the alloy and carbide sections of this investigation. This dynamic method of vapor pressure measurement presents a problem when studying solid alloy systems in which one of the components has a much larger vapor pressure than the others. Over-all depletion of the alloy in the most volatile component will occur during evaporation so that the pressure of that component will decrease. Even more serious than the over-all concentration change is the surface depletion of volatile component in the alloy brought about by the slow rate of diffusion of this component from the interior to the surface of the solid particle. Since knowledge of this surface composition is necessary in order to relate it to the activity determined through the measurements, changes in surface composition from the analyzed bulk composition are to be avoided in dynamic vapor pressure studies of solid alloys. The system under investigation in this study presents the problem of surface depletion of manganese since its pressure at 1230°K is 105greater than iron and 1020 greater than carbon. Since the existence of a volatile manganese carbide had been ruled out previously,' the high manganese pressure relative to iron and carbon insured that the only species leaving the effusion cell was manganese. Therefore, the effusing species required no analysis so that the manganese pressure was determined directly from the weight loss of the effusion cell. In order to detect small weight losses near the beginning of effusion, a vacuum microbalance was used to weigh the cell continually. These initial weight loss data allowed the rate of manganese effusion to be determined before the surface of the alloy became depleted in manganese. This '90s 'Public Relations spin' approach, usually backed up by scientific data, technical reports and graphs outlining risk probability and the impact potential on people and communities, is being challenged. Challenged by communities who have greater access to information, demand greater levels of transparency and corporate responsibility of large corporate operations and possess greater awareness of the communities they live in.   The growth of the environmental movement, of anti-globalisation, anti corporatism, apprehension of a large corporate's ability to deal with community issues, and a lack of faith in the abilities of regulators to regulate corporate activities, means our industry faces challenges on multiple fronts. It must now be able to address these from a personal/community perspective if it is to remain relevant within communities.   One of the keys to this is linking the internal activities and responsibilities to the externals concerns and demands for higher levels of operation and care.   This presentation draws on Corporate Public Affairs trends, functions and approaches and the application to External Affairs activities within Newmont Waihi Gold's operations in Waihi and regional exploration activities throughout the Hauraki Goldfields.   The approach presented works on the philosophy that communities don't necessarily have to like what we do, but should be able to identify and recognise the way in which we involve them in decision making, communicate our intentions and respond to issues.

The method of chloride-hypochlorite leaching has the advantages of short process, low pollution and higher in reaction rate compared with the traditional leaching method. In this research, NaCl - NaClO solution is used to leaching gold from a refractory gold concentrate, and the influence of NaCl and NaClO concentration, reaction time to the leaching rate were investigated in this experiment. The raw materials and the leaching residue were characterized by a series of analysis methods such as XRD, XRF, SEM and EDS. Results indicate that the leaching rate and the desulfurization rate can be achieved at 96.26% and 98% with most optimum conditions as follows: NaCl concentration 50g/L, NaClO concentration 200g/L, Liquid-solid ratio 10:1, the best reaction time was 150 mins. And these conditions should be guaranteed pH<8.0, ORP>900mV.

ONE LAW cannot he evaded, the economic law of supply and demand. Silver, like any other commodity, is subject to this law; and its price in the long run is determined by existing conditions. I say "in the lone run because at times silver has appeared to mope contra to basic coalitions. Such movements, however, are, occasioned by the market&apos;s attempt to anticipate changes in these governing conditions. If the expected changes materialize then the new market level is justified, but if they do not then the market will revert to its previous status, A striking example of such a move occurred in November when the price advanced over 70, in ten days and then in the next two weeks lost more than it had gained. The reasons for this advance were that the speculative element interpreted certain events as favorable to silver namely, England suspension of the gold standard, higher shat prices, and the Chinese-Japanese crisis. When these expectations proved unjustified the inevitably, elapse followed became the governing conditions had not channel.

Design and implementation of a roof bolting plan requires reliable geotechnical information of strata, such as rock strength, and locations of interfaces and voids/fractures. The drilling parameters obtained during normal roof bolt installation cycle provide a fast and economic way to gather information on the geological structure within the bolted horizon. The purpose of this research project is to develop a method for identifying the geological features in the mine roof strata based on drilling parameters of roof bolter. The criterion for void/fracture prediction has been developed and proven valid. This paper focuses on the estimation of the strength of roof strata by using drilling parameters. Based on the results of a series of underground and laboratory tests, feed pressure is found to be the most sensitive parameter when the strength of roof strata changes. Moreover, it was also found that both penetration rate and rotation rate have obvious impact on the magnitude of feed pressure. Based on these findings, the criterion for the estimation of roof strata strength has been developed using the relationship among feed pressure, penetration rate and rotation rate and implemented in MRGIS.
