Aragonite, co-occurring with calcite and dolomite as matrix minerals, has been discovered in Mahogany zone oil shales of Colorado's Eocene Green River Formation, posing puzzles on the geochemical patterns of their separate origins, reasons for their simultaneous existence, and their interrelation. The presence of aragonite is demonstrated by X-ray diffraction. Amounts of aragonite and dolomite are significantly and inversely related, but the calcite quantity is essentially independent of either aragonite or dolomite quantity. A geochemical pattern outlining the deposition conditions that created the Green River Formation oil shale is postulated from characteristics of the oil shale. The development of the three separate carbonates--aragonite, calcite, and dolomite--the inverse relationship between aragonite and dolomite, and the independence of amounts of calcite and the other two carbonates are shown to be natural consequences of this oil-shale genesis pattern.

The Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program (DEEP), a research consortium formed in 1997 by Canadian mining companies, labour unions, and provincial and federal government departments, completed its work by mid-2006. This program, in which Vale Inco participated with both direct funding and in-kind contributions, investigated the ability of currently available technology to significantly reduce underground concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM) with high efficiency and low maintenance over a long-term period (years of life).While DEEP?s testing showed that engine maintenance is a critical component for lowering DPM, it was clear that reduction of DPM to the very low target levels of ~0.05 mg/m3 was not possible with maintenance alone. The best candidate technology for achieving low DPM levels was particulate filter systems. Furthermore, successful deployment of such systems was highly dependent on removing them from having to rely on human intervention for their regeneration. The search continues within Vale Inco to identify a reliable and rugged system.

The first full year of the second World War for the United States presented a picture of the metal-and nonmetal-mining 4 industry which, without proper analysis and explanation, would convey a distorted view of achievements during 1942, especially because employment at gold and silver (lode and placer) mines-the largest group-declined to such an extent that the over-all totals for the country were reduced even though increases were made at mines producing copper, lead-zinc, iron, miscellaneous metals, and non-metals. A complete panorama of the metal-and nonmetal-mining industry, exclusive of coal mining, reveals a decrease in the number of men employed, the man-hours of employment, and the accident-frequency rates. Were the gold and silver (lode and placer) mines to be considered as a separate category; it would be seen that the number of men employed at all the other groups of mines increased appreciably over 1941. These other increases must be considered important, since these mines produced the vital war minerals that made valuable contributions to the military successes of the United States and its Allies during the year. A separate analysis of each of the various groups of mines may be found elsewhere in this bulletin. For the purpose of maintaining continuity in this series of bulletins, however, the discussion in this introduction will be confined to the entire metal-and nonmetal-mining industry (excluding coal mining, for which a separate bulletin, No. 462, has been published).

For mining medium-hard materials on the surface, "Continuous Surface Miners" have been employed for some years. The latest generation surface miner extends the performance of this type of machine to the point where the same cost efficiencies can now be achieved in medium-hard materials as has been achieved in softer materials by machines such as the bucket wheel excavator. The paper explains briefly the technology of the Krupp Surface Miner (recently released to the market) and develops the costs of ownership and typical operating costs. Comparisons are made between a shoveLtruck system and Krupp Surface Miner (KSM) systems based on both truck and conveyor transport systems. Further benefits of mining with the KSM, such as environmental, selective mining and improved product reovery are discussed briefly. The equipment is now available to mine semi-hard materials (with compressive strengths up to 60MPa) on a continuous basis and reap the benefits which continuous systems can deliver. All new and existing open cut mines should review their costs with regard to this technology.

The Magruder and Chambers copper deposits in the Little River gold district, on the border line of Lincoln and Wilkes Counties, Georgia, have been known for a number of years (fig. 1). The Magruder deposit was first opened as a gold mine but has produced mostly copper and load. Records show that about 50 cars of concentrates were shipped from this property. No record of any production at the Chambers deposit is available. The Bureau of Mines, in its program of investigation of strategic minerals deposits, diamond drilled 10 holes, totaling 3,784 feet, on the two properties between December 3, 1948, and June 23, 1949. Eighty-eight core samples were analyzed, and the analyses and drill-hole data are presented in this report.

The aim of this work was to study the use of steelmaking slag as raw material to the production of rock wool and glass wool. Firstly, the chemical composition of the slag was analyzed. These results were used to infer the amount of additives to assemble the charge for the experiments. A laboratory-scale electric furnace was used to melt the mixtures used as charge. The melt material were turned into a water filled recipient, this process was performed in order to impose a fast freezing that is a characteristic of mineral wool production. Finally, with the rest of the melt material it was performed the Herty Viscosity Test. Samples of the produced material were characterized by different analyses. The results found in this research may lead to a technological innovation, because they indicate that the use of steelmaking slag to produce rock wool and glass wool is possible.

All aspects of precious metals processing were featured at a symposium held Oct. 3-6, 2007, at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, AZ. Although billed as "Precious Metals Processing: Advances in Primary and Secondary Operations," the symposium also looked at economic, regulatory and environmental issues affecting the precious metals industry. The symposium was sponsored by SME; The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS); and the International Precious Metals Institute (IPMI). It included workshops, technical presentations, guest speakers and social activities. Mining industry management, process engineers, equipment manufacturers, consultants, metals marketers, academics and others involved in the precious metals industry attended the conference. Needless to say, with gold nearing $25.721g ($800/oz) and platinum pushing $41.801g ($1,300/oz) at the time of the meeting, the mood among the attendees could not have been more positive. The symposium was privileged to have Father Ernest S. Sweeney, professor of Latin American History at Loyola Marymount University, as a guest speaker. Sweeney, a Jesuit priest, provided a colorful account of the history of mining in Arizona and the surrounding region of North America (Fig. 1). He described the importance of the mining industry and said, "To go down into the bowels of the earth to extract its riches for the benefit of all of us is an awesome task deserving our sincere respect and gratitude." However, he warned the industry that: "The ever increasing de¬mands on the mining community for the protection of the environment calls for endless efforts to maintain ethical standards in a business filled with risk, uncertainty and frustrations." Sweeney noted that the Spanish conquest of the Americas was driven by the three fundamental motives of "God, glory and gold." He noted that gold was the basic, most powerful driving force of the conquest and occupation of the Spanish empire. The first European to explore Arizona was the Franciscan missionary Marcos de Niza. He came to Arizona in 1539 in search of the fabled Seven Golden Cities of Cíbola. Sweeny noted that Spanish explorers were consumed, as Cortes himself described it, "with a burning fever that only gold could cure." Sweeney told the story of some of these early explorers, including Francisco Vázquez de Coronado who "mounted an expedition in pursuit of gold and rich empires to conquer." Coronado passed through Arizona and discovered the Grand Canyon. "Coronado returned to Mexico exhausted, bankrupt and disillusioned, but with a wealth of new knowledge of the borderlands of the Spanish empire," said Sweeney. He then described the colorful history of early gold, silver and copper exploration and mining in Arizona, including the famous tale of the Lost Dutchman's Mine. A computer program was written for the design of a shell and tube heat exchanger on a price optimum basis for the following conditions: (1) Triangular pitch; (2) single or multiple pass; (3) heating or cooling; (4) no change in phase; and (5) inside pumping costs immaterial. Price optimum design was obtained for four standard tube sizes and standard pitch. The inside pressure drop was fixed and outside pressure drop was computed for the optimum baffle spacing and when the baffle spacing equaled the shell diameter. Standard shells whose areas equaled or exceeded the required area were also listed. The program was made adaptable to various fluids and to various tube sizes and pitch by reading in many of the required data such as physical properties of the fluids, tube data, and standard shell data in tabular form.

The rapid development of the global alumina and aluminum industry is straight coupled with the demands and the needs of these materials. Nowadays, the only well-known accessible resources to produce alumina and aluminum are bauxite ores. But bauxite ores are limited, and the remaining exploitable reserves do not have high contents in alumina. In countries where there is little or no bauxite reserves or where the recovery of existing bauxite ores to produce alumina with the Bayer process are not economic, alternative resources for alumina have been explored. The most attractive resources for replacing bauxites are aluminosilicate clay minerals and coal fly ash. The important processes developed for the recovery of alumina from these sources are acid leaching and alkaline leaching processes. The acid leaching is known as the most efficient in which thermal and mechanical activation are included for improving the performance of the process. The objective of this review is to give a comprehensive insight on the production of the alumina from thermally or mechanically activated clays and coal fly ash by hydrochloric, sulfuric, and nitric acid leaching processes.

The classification performance of a Dutch State Mines (DSM) Rapped Sieve Bend has been investigated in a series of experiments. Coal slurries of a nominal 0.5 mm size were classified in the separation range of 0.10 to 0.14 mm at pulp densities from 6 to 21 per cent by mass of solids, and flow rates of 110 to 1375 litre min-1.The results obtained showed that the partition curve and water split io oversize was dependent on the solids flow rather than slurry flow rate or pulp density. For most of the operating conditions considered an accurate classification of the fine coal was obtained. The undersize efficiency was susceptible to solids flow rate, and was less than 70 per cent for solids flow rates greater than 16.7 tonne hour-1 metre-1 width of screen.

Stirred milling using either horizontal or vertical mills has made a rapid entrance into PGM ore and tailings concentrator flow sheets. Currently there are in excess of 40 units installed in either mainstream, ?MIG? or intermediate concentrate regrind, ?UFG?, applications in PGM, primary ore treatment plants or in tailings scavenging and reclamation treatment plants. This represents a total of approximately 70 MW of installed fine grinding equipment. This paper outlines the reasons why the technology take-up has been rapid and illustrates the advantages of this technology over conventional milling. Explosives, originally used only in fireworks and warfare, became legitimate contributors to human progress when miners in Eastern Europe began using them to break rock in the early 1600%. Since that time these powerful materials have had a dual role in the world: as agents of destruction in war, and as irreplaceable tools necessary to advance civilization. In the latter role, they serve as agents to enable mankind to produce metals, build roads, and drive tunnels. In other words, to provide those materials, services, and infrastructure without which the modern world could not exist.

With unprecedented worldwide growth and increasing global demand for energy expected to swell by 60 per-cent in the next two decades, mining matters as much now, if not more, than it ever has. This was the consensus at the 110th Annual National Western Mining Conference presented by the Colorado Mining Association, Feb. 12-14 at the Westin Hotel in Denver, CO. The role of coal ? America?s most abundant energy source ? the future of uranium and its possible resurgence in the energy marketplace, the skyrocketing value of gold as well as the issues of health, safety, climate change, legislation and government?s role in mining were all discussed during the three-day conference that operated under the banner of ?Mining Matters.? Barbara Filas, chairperson of the 110th National Western Mining Conference, president of Knight Piesold Co. and former SME president, welcomed the record crowd with an inspiring speech in which she pointed out that although ?most normal folks don?t know what role mining plays in their everyday life, mining does matter. ?Our industry,? she said, ?matters to Colorado. It matters to Colorado because it is a $3-billion industry. It matters to the 13,000 people who are employed directly or indirectly by the industry and it matters to schools that receive more than half of the royalties that are generated by mining.? During discussions of mining?s place in Colorado, the western United States and the world, special attention was paid to coal, uranium and the future of energy. ?It is time to rethink our perceptions about coal,? said Mark A. Smith, president and chief executive officer of Chevron Mining Inc. He spoke during the opening reception in a presentation titled, ?Coal to Liquids: Bridging America?s Energy Gap.? Although coal is America?s most abundant, and cheapest energy source, it is also one of the most scrutinized because of the pollution it causes and recent, and heavily publicized, tragedies that have claimed the lives of some who mine it.

The South West Rail Link (SWRL) project involved construction of a rail line to service new residential areas in south-west Sydney. The 11 km rail line is conveyed through a short tunnel at shallow depth where it crosses beneath the eight lanes of the Hume Highway. The underpass location is one of the most heavily trafficked within Sydney’s motorway network.The New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services (Roads and Maritime), as the owner of the highway asset, had the responsibility of managing the risks to the highway and traffic associated with the tunnelling project from the pretender stage through to completion. This paper considers the primary risks and mitigation measures employed, including geotechnical investigation, and development of appropriate construction constraints and concept design of an extensive real-time survey system to monitor pavement deformation during the tunnel works.The geology comprises fresh Minchinbury Sandstone in the tunnel invert and side walls, and variably weathered Bringelly Shale in the haunch and crown. Few tunnels have been excavated in these rock types in Sydney, and there is little information relating to the in situ stresses and stress-relief deformations in these materials.During tunnel construction the monitoring data indicated unexpected surface heave of up to about 24 mm. A multiparametric back-analysis of the deformation data is presented, which provides information on the deformation mechanisms and key geotechnical parameters, including rock mass modulus and in situ stresses.The approaches and methodologies developed for the SWRL underpass were effective in maintaining the safe operation and traffic capacity of the highway throughout the construction period, and the analysis of the monitoring data provides a useful reference for similar future projects, or projects constructed in similar ground conditions.CITATION:Clarke, S J and Walker, C S, 2014. MACROPILES are defined as ultra-high-capacity micropiles, with working loads in excess of 250 tons. The piles are typically 9-5/8 to 24 inch (244 to 610 mm) outside diameter. They are drilled and grouted in place, with either large diameter steel bars and/or steel pipe reinforcement. The piles are typically tested to twice the working load. Piles with working capacities of up to 500 tons and tested to 1000 tons have been installed. The paper discusses MACROPILE design philosophy, construction techniques, and two case histories where this innovative foundation system has been installed. Macropiles are descended from micropile technology pioneered in the early 1950s by Fernando Lizzi of Italy.

Despite the prevailing low gold price environment at the time of acquisition, Glamis anticipated rapid development of the San Martin project due to the quality of the deposit and other positive factors.Following favorable exploration and permitting activities in the first half of 1999, Glamis prepared a Feasibility study. In October 1999, Glamis decided to proceed with the development of the project and selected Hatch to provide the engineering, procurement and construction management services for the project. The San Martin project was in full-scale commercial operation approximately 14 months after the receipt of Board approval, and by July 2001 the San Martin project was operating at approximately 150% of its feasibility design capacity."

"The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) established on August 15, 1983, a Generic Mineral Technology Center (GTC) for Respirable Duet within the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institutes (MRIs) at The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and West Virginia University (WVU) in association with participating MRIs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Minnesota (UMN). The primary goal of the Center is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through researching and advancing the fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable duet associated with mining and milling and the interaction of dust and lungs. Other Center activities include the training of engineers and scientists, graduate students and undergraduate students through their respective institutions, and the technology transfer to the industry. The Center also serves as the reference center for publications in the respirable dust area.Exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres has long posed a serious hazard to miners. The control of these hazards, some of which can have sudden and catastrophic effects and some others, slow and long enduring consequences, has been a major concern for labor, management and government alike. This concern has manifested itself in four primary mechanisms of control -- (1) regulatory control through minimum standard setting by the passage of mine health and safety laws, (2) engineering control through design and operation of mines according to the best recommended practices, (3) interaction of dust and lung control through periodic physical examinations, wearing personal protection devices, etc., and (4) legal and social control through workmen's compensation laws for occupation related health deterioration.The stated objective of the Federal Mine Safety and Health laws is to ""... permit each miner the opportunity to work underground during the period of his entire adult working life with-out incurring any disability from pneumoconiosis or any other occupation-related disease ....""Significant progress has been made in lowering the dust levels in mines since the inception of the Bureau's respirable dust research program. It is generally agreed that mines are less dusty today than they were a decade ago. However, the most serious hazard for workers in the mining and minerals processing industries is still the exposure to respirable dust, and solutions to the problem of respirable dust disease remain to be found."
