Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, zinc, electrowinning Zincor has been producing zinc since 1969 via the roast-leach-electrowinning process. It is the only primary zinc producer in South Africa, and currently supplies the entire country with zinc. The plant was built by Goldfields of South Africa, on the site of an old gold and uranium mine. Since then, the ownership of the plant has changed a couple of times, and the plant and process have also been improved. Production output has increased from around 80 000 tons per year to more than 110 000 tons per year. This was done mainly through increasing the capacity of the roasters and acid plant. Zincor produces four main grades of zinc: SHG, Zn1, Zn2, and Zn4, in three shapes: a 25 kg ingot and 1 and 2 ton jumbos. In 2005, a pre-alloy furnace was built that enabled the production of jumbos pre-alloyed with aluminium. This has allowed Zincor's customers to improve the efficiency of their continuous galvanizing lines and to lower their production costs.

The Newcrest Mining Limited Cadia East Panel Cave mines near Orange, New South Wales, Australia commenced production 1200 m below the surface in May 2014. Understanding the mine-wide impact caving had on excavation stability was a primary objective to ensure a safe working environment as production ramped up in the Panel Cave 1 operation and establishment activities were implemented in Panel Cave 2. The impact of cave interaction between Panel Cave 1 and Panel Cave 2 and establishing monitoring systems to assist mine planning and production as both caves joined is explained in this paper. Monitoring tools such as a microseismic system, open holes, HI-cells, extensometers, fibre optic sensing, cave markers, closure monitoring, underground observations and damage mapping were used to characterise the performance and position of the cave back. The data and observations collected were compared to predictions from numerical and empirical methods and used to calibrate the numerical models for forward prediction and to develop site empirical design tools. At the beginning of the 1990s, Communism fell and signaled the end of the Cold War. The world rejoiced but also watched and waited to see how those countries would restructure themselves. The 1990 SME Annual Meeting was held at the Salt Palace Center in Salt Lake City, UT. The keynote session featured Alistair Frame, chairman of RTZ; Paul Queneau, professor of metallurgy at the University of Utah; and TS Ary, director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The SME Board of Directors voted to hire a Manager of Public Information and Education to be the GEM Program coordinator. This person was to collect and disseminate information that could be used by individual members and Local Sections to interface with government personnel and the general public.

Brief descriptions of several types of unit pulverizeI' are given and the functioning of the components that crush, carry, dry and classify the coal is considered. A distinction is drawn between pulverizers which crush particle beds and those .operating by free-crushing. The overall performance of pulverijlers is considered in terms of correlations between mill variables, coal grindability, abrasiveness, moisture and particle size. Brief discussioiJ. of the influence of pulverized fuel quality on boiler operation and of pulverizing costs concludes the paper.INTRODUCTIONModern coal pulverizers function as carriers of materials and as crushers, as dryers and as size classification machines and, thus, the unit pulverizer comprises. several components that normally function as separate apparatus. The controls of the unit pulverizer must have sufficient flexibility to accommodate rapid variations of boiler load or coal quality. Further, the machine must be robust, yet easy to maintain preferably at annual intervals-so that maintenance costs are small (for coal is a relatively cheap material). Usually, the full load of a modern pulverized-fuel fired boiler can be raised with one pulverizer off-line. All coals, from anthracites to brown coal, may be prepared as pulverized fuel (hereafter P.F.) .Each pulverizer of a direct-fired boiler has, broadly, to supply the burners with coal powdered so that about 80 per cent passes a 200 B.S. sieve and only a small proportion, less than about 10 per cent, remains on the 100 B.S. sieve. The classification processes must prevent any appreciable proportion of coarse particles in the P.F. and yet not return excessive proportions of "finished" fines. Thermal, metallographic, and vapor pressure data were obtained to establish the phase diagram for the thorium-zinc system. Four compounds corresponding to the stoichiometric formulas Th2Zn, ThZn2, ThZn4, and Th2Zn17 were observed. The melting points of these compounds under constrained vapor conditions were found to be 1055°, 1105°, 1095°, and 1015°C respectively. Four eutectics exist in this system with the following eutectic temperatures and thorium contents in wt pct: 1040°C, 89 Th; 945°C, 79 Th; 1045°C, 55 Th; and 995°C, 35 Th. The standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds were determined from zinc vapor pressure data. ALTHOUGH the thorium-zinc system has been of technical importance in the commercial production of thorium and more recently of interest to some proposed pyrometallurgical separations processes for reactor fuels or blanket materials no detailed investigation of this system has been made in the past. Some previous work has been reviewed by Hanssen.1 The existence of four compounds, Th2Zn17, ThZn4, ThZn2, and Th2Zn has been established and their crystal structures have been studied by X-ray diffraction techniques.2-4 Smirnov et al.,5 determined the solubility of thorium in zinc and investigated the two-phase region between Th2Zn17 and zinc. They calculated some of the thermodynamic properties for these alloys from emf measurements on the cells Th/ThCl4(fused)/Cl2, C and Th2Zn17(s)+ Zn (l)/ThCl4(fused)/Cl2, C. The possibility of reaction between the anode materials and fused thorium tetrachloride to produce a lower valent thorium salt would have to be resolved in order to evaluate the results obtained. The purpose of the present investigation is to establish the phase diagram for the thorium-zinc system and to determine the standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds formed. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The metals employed in the preparation of alloys were Bunker Hill slab zinc, 99.99 pct pure and Ames Lalboratory thorium. The major impurities in the thorium in parts per million were oxygen—1250, carbon—350, iron—100, nitrogen-75, and silicon—70. The metals in the form of several small massive pieces, total weight about 30 g, were cleaned with acid, washed with water and acetone, and dried just prior to their use for alloy preparation. Tantalum containers were found to be suitable for all the alloys studied and were used throughout this investigation. The metals were sealed inside of small 1-in.-diam tantalum crucibles by welding on preformed tantalum covers. As mining continues toward deeper reserves in thick western US coal fields, the control of mining induced-seismicity has become a priority in many operations in Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming. Gradual floor heave, common in many coal mines, has historically not been a safety issue. However recent occurrences of sudden floor heave accompanied with seismicity in a few deep mines have fueled this investigation. The focus is to identify and study the mechanisms resulting in sudden heaving of the mine floor in western U.S. deep coal mines through analytical calculations and back analyses of an actual event in a cooperative mine. Based on review of available data in three mines, underground observations and back analyses of an actual event, the authors have identified the following contributing factors (1) presence of stiff stratigraphic units and thick seams mined at depths exceeding 1000-ft (2) presence of geological discontinuities reducing the in-situ strength of the coal with calculated factor of safety near 1 for the mine floor (3) mining approaching areas of higher than normal stress gradient associated with previous mining or structural anomalies or surface topographic highs and (4) an additional source of energy triggering sudden failure such as periodic caving or slip along geological discontinuities. Preliminary examination of seismic data for the actual event in the cooperative mine and underground observations excluded fault slip at the mining horizon as the triggering mechanism but highlighted the significance of weak, anisotropic strata conditions near the intersection of two faults.

Fires in underground coal mines are persistent problems anywhere in the world that coal is mined. Coal fires pose safety and health hazards in the form of mine subsidence, loss of energy reserves, destruction of property and surface improvements, and air pollution. In 1995, the US Bureau of Mines (US-BM), in cooperation with the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology (CDMG),entered into a contract with Goodson & Associates Inc. (GAI) to design and field test the effectiveness of a new foamed grout technology called ThermoCell. GAI is a Lakewood, CO geotechnical and mining reclamation engineering firm. The company developed ThermoCell to control and extinguish underground coal fires. The viability of the special grout and the technology of application were established during a full-scale field demonstration at the abandoned IHI Coal Mine fire, near Rifle, CO. Following acquisition of additional funding by CDMG in 1999, Goodson returned to the site in April to continue the grouting to fully extinguish the IHI fire.

New technology for on-line particle size analysis of mineral slurries has opened up new applications for particle size measurement. In some cases the particle size distribution of the final concentrate is an important quality issue. This paper discusses established on-line particle size analysis technologies and presents experiences on the use of a new technique employing laser diffraction in several minerals processing operations. The main innovations in the new instrument are a simple dilution system and multiple scattering correction algorithm, which allows wide solids content variations of diluted sample in the measurement cell. Representative sample for laser measurement is produced by a simple and reliable dilution system. The applications discussed are; Blaine number measurement of Fe concentrate before pelletizing, grinding of variable batches of ore and paste thickener control.

The apparatus was of a modified Sieverts type1&apos;2 with a reaction tube designed to function also as the cell component of an oxygen pressure gage. The reaction tube assembly is shown in Fig. 1 and described in Table I. The main body is a 1-in.-OD 15 mol pct calcia-stabilized zirconia tube. The ground-glass joint, g, the male part of which carried a prism for optical pyrometer use, was connected to the remainder of the Sieverts apparatus. The calibration of the cell (at its 1000°K operating temperature) for internal oxygen pressures (PO2in) in the range 0.2 to 10 9 atm was made against internal air pressures measured by mercury manometer and McLeod gage. At very low po2in values down to l<Tn atm the performance was checked by comparing pQ calculated from electromotive force measurement when the apparatus was filled with a) pure CO gas and b) a CO-CO2 mixture of the ratio CO-CO2 = 1:0.398, with Po, values calculated from the equilibrium constants of the following reactions at 1000°K:

The Ohaaki Rhyolite and the Rautiwiri Breccia are two volcanic units occurring in the shallow and deep parts of the Broadlands-Ohaaki geothermal system. Alteration of these units by chloride waters results in distinct mineral assemblages that also have distinct whole rock compositions. The Ohaaki rhyolite is altered to an assemblage dominated by quartz, adularia, illite and pyrite as a consequence of silica, potassium and sulfur metasomatism. Locally, these rocks contain up to 0.5 ppm Au. The Rautiwiri Breccia by contrast is altered to an assemblage dominated by albite, adularia, quartz, illite, chlorite and pyrite in association with modest sodium metasomatism. Whole rock oxygen isotope compositions of altered rocks range between 3.3 and 7.5 ë, and are generally lower compared to their fresh rock equivalents having values of 9.5 to 10.6 ë; the result is broad pattern of lower values with increasing alteration intensity.

"Shallow-depth (<200m) high temperature submarine hydrothermal systems are not commonly observed on mid-ocean ridge settings, as most known systems are located within arc - island-arc volcanic settings, often proximal to coastal areas (meteoric waters added). In 2013, during the Centre for Geobiology’s 2013 oceanographic cruise (R/V G.O. Sars), a dredge successfully sampled massive sulfides and hydrothermally altered rocks from the top of a volcanic edifice (~144-284 m depth) located on the northern sector of the Kolbeinsey Ridge. Dredged samples include vesicular altered basalts, and matrix supported anhydrite, barite and barite-pyrite-anhydrite volcaniclastic breccias. Sulfidesulfate breccias depict complex zoning where numerous small vent orifices are distributed with large blades of marcasite that appear intergrown with barite. Native sulfur was observed in one of these small vent orifices. On a microscopic scale, numerous spherical silica-rich structures appear associated to these breccias. These rocks are evidence for the presence of a relatively high temperature (minimum 150ºC) shallow-water seafloor hydrothermal system in the Arctic mid-ocean ridge, far from mainland influence. This new discovery presents a unique opportunity to study the dynamics of fluid chemistry, metal mobility and precipitation in shallow hydrothermal systems. The remote location of this system dictates that fluid recharge will be influenced solely by seawater and magmatic fluids, In July-August 2014 we expect to survey this new field and acquire new and comprehensive data."

THE old mill erected by the .Irvinebank Company consisted of 10 heads of stamps (850 lb.), rock-breaker, Hartz jig, two Krupp tables, two Luhrig vanners, three sand-pumps, one mixer; six flotation vessels, and the necessary settlers. Power was supplied by a small colonial-type boiler, and 10-in. x 15-in Tangye engines. The ore was darted from the mines to the mill and hand-fed, into the rock-breaker, and the broken product elevated into the batter bins and fed into the stamps, the pulp from the stamps passing to a classifier, the spigot to jig, tables, and vanners, the overflow from the classifier passing to settlers. After the removal of bismuth-wolfram concentrates, the pulp was pumped to the molybdenite flotation plant and the olybdenite recovered by flotation.A commencement was made with the erection of the first unit (20 heads) of the new mill in August, 1917, and milling and concentrating commenced in February, 1919.

Iron ore pellets are a preferred feedstock for ironmaking. One method used for pelletizing is the grate-kiln process, first established in 1960.During the past decade, the establishment of new grate-kiln plants has increased rapidly, especially in China, and new constructors of pellet plants have started to operate in the market. It is well known that the grate-kiln method yields a superior and more consistent pellet quality compared with the straight-grate process. However, certain issues exist with the grate-kiln plant, which are discussed here, together with proposed practical solutions.

When the 2008 Olympic Games begin in Beijing, China is September it will not only mark the end of the journey for the Olympic torch and the thou-sands of participating athletes, but the games will also mark the culmination of a massive amount of construction in the city. On display for the world to see will be 31 new and refurbished venues including the 91,000-seat National Stadium called the ?Bird?s Nest? and the aquatics center, called the Water Cube. What will not be featured as prominently on the television cameras broadcasting the games around the world will be the network of tunnels built beneath the city. But that infrastructure of rail lines will be of critical importance to the games. While preparing to host the world, China added a subway tunnel that will include four stops in the Olympic Park. The 4.4-km (2.7-mile) subway line that runs through the complex of stadiums, gymnasiums and parks began trial operations in June. Prior to the opening of that line, Beijing&apos;s No. 5 subway line, which runs through the heart of the city from north to south, opened in October. INTRODUCTION Countries that are currently developing their mineral potential have unique information systems requirements to support these activities. The mining laws usually grant the State considerable authority over the process. In many instances, the mining laws give a government agency the responsibility for granting and controlling exploration permits and development concessions. This is the case in Costa Rica. The Direcion of Geologia, Minas, y Hidrocarburos (DGMH) of the Ministerio de Industria, Energia y Minas (MIEM) is responsible for the management and operation of the National Mining Register. This paper describes the results of two studies of the information system requirements to support the National Mining Registry as well as those supporting some of the other function of the DGMH. The first of the studies reviewed the situation before the installation of computer equipment. The second study evaluated the installed systems. BACKGROUND Historical Perspective Mining in Costa Rica is at present a relatively minor part of the economy. It consists primarily of industrial minerals and gold production. Gold production is largely by small-scale miners and may be more substantial than reported. There is considerable interest on the part of the Government in both having a better understanding of the existing mining industry and promoting future development. Mining law was first provided by the Ordinanza de Mineral (of 1830). This was replaced by the first Mining Code of 1953. Apparently, one of the first problems caused by the 1953 law was the granting of concessions which were not worked. A 1968 agreement with ALCOA also resulted in political conflict. The Government worked on a new Mining Code for many years and in 1982 the current Mining Code was enacted. Draft implementing regulations were prepared in April 1984. Mining Code of 1982 The Mining Code of 1982 addresses most aspects of mining in Costa Rica including the declaration that all mineral resources are to be the property of the State. The State may grant exploration permits and exploitation permits. The exploitation of hydrocarbons, radioactive minerals and certain water resources was reserved to the state. The DGMH was given authority to settle placer claim disputes, maintain a registry of exploration permits, and exploitation concessions. and generally supervise mining activity. Towards this, the Mining Code of 1982 includes rather detailed requirements for the processing of application for permits and concessions. Mining Code Application Requirements The following briefly describes the requirements to give the reader a feeling for the complexity of the process. Currently, over 1,000 active applications, exploration permits and exploitation concessions are being monitored under the process. The number remains relatively consistent in that the number of new applications is usually about the same as the applications that are put aside. The time and date of the filing must be certified by the DGMH. The application must include all the information specified in the Mining Code. If incomplete, DGMH must notify the applicant of the deficiencies or omissions and direct that the applicant correct the deficiencies or omissions within 8 business days (a single 30 business-day extension is allowable). If the applicant does not respond as directed, the application is deemed as not having been filed and the pertinent information is placed in the files. The DGMH must reject the application outright and direct it be placed in the files in the following cases: (a). If the new application covers the area of a previous permit or concession, either being processed or already granted.

Ilmenite concentrates prepared from beach and dune sands of Florida, India, Australia, and other localities deviate to varying degrees from the theoretical composition of pure ilmenite, and generally contain more TiO2 than the formula FeTi03 would indicate, and some Fe2O3. This variation in composition is due to different amounts of altered ilmenite in the concentrates. (&apos;) The alteration has been shown to take place by oxidation and leaching of the iron in ilmenite, to yield residual products consisting of amaphous or very finely crystalline titanium dioxide and ferric oxide. Other studies(2) have stressed that ilmenite may alter first to an amorphous titanium-iron oxide, or to an amorphous mixture of titanium and iron oxides, with later alteration to crystalline titanium dioxide. There has been some speculation as to whether alteration of ilmenite is usually caused by weathering or by hydrothermal pr0cesses.(3,4,5 Three main methods of approach were used to study the mechanism and rate of ilmenite weathering. (1) Etch tests were used to learn the relationship between crystallographic orientation and the rate of chemical attack on ilmenite. (2) Altered ilmenites in New Jersey sands were compared with ilmenite in rocks of the area from which the sands were probably derived. (3) Experiments were carried out to determine at what rate, and by what agents, originally fresh ilmenite could be altered in the laboratory under simulated weathering conditions. ETCH FIGURES ON ILMENITE CRYSTAL PLANES A rather large ilmenite crystal from Sannidal, Norway, about 11/2 x 11/2 x 2 inches, bearing a few natural faces with imperfect surfaces, was prepared for etching by grinding and polishing crystal planes whose Bravais-Miller indices (referred to hexagonal axes) had been determined by X-ray methods to be 00.1, 10.0, and 10.2. Metallographic examination showed that the crystal was homogeneous, and uniform in orientation, except for the presence of twin lamellae which were oriented with their broadest surfaces parallel to the 00.1 planes of the large crystal. Since ilmenite is rather inert to standard etch reagents, strong solutions of hot sulfuric acid and cold hydrofluoric acid were used. Preliminary tests established that better etch figures were obtained using HF than with H2So4 solutions. The etch figures produced on 00.1 and 01.0 planes of ilmenite by etching 3 to 5 minutes in cold concentrated HF solution are shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3. "Recently4/ it was shown that the total energy method5/ of spectrochemical analysis is suitable for the quantitative estimation of many of the elements of which ores are composed. It was shown how this method can be applied to the determination of germanium, tin, and lead. Continuing this work, the present report deals with analyses for beryllium, zinc, cadmium, and indium.There are three basic problems in these investigations. The first is to study the influence of those elements that make up the greater part of an ore sample on the spectral-line intensities of the elements for which analyses are being made, the latter generally being the minor constituents. The second is to develop proper methods for the preparation of standard spectrographic curves. Finally, we are concerned with improvement in equipment and procedure, so that greater accuracy can be achieved.As discussed previously, it is better to study as groups those elements that belong to the same group in the periodic table because their spectra are similar. Beryllium, zinc, and cadmium are thus related. Indium was included in this work because it is associated with zinc and cadmium in zinc ores.The authors wish to acknowledge the valuable assistance of the staff of the Bureau of Mines Analytical Laboratory who made the chemical analyses and supplied the ore samples used in this work.A brief description of the procedures followed in making the standard curves and analyses is given below; a detailed discussion will be found in an earlier paper.6/Basically, the procedure for determining a standard curve consists of two parts: (1) Choosing a suitable line in the spectrum of the element to be determined and (2) determining the variation in the intensity of this line with the amount of the element burned in the arc."

The extraction of ore in panel caving operations also involves the coextraction of non-economic material, known as dilution. Forecasting, avoiding, and understanding the mechanics of dilution is critical to longterm planning. The models of dilution that are currently in use in panel caving operations are those by Laubscher (1994), who postulated that dilution is due to gravitational flow and depends on the height of interaction, the column height, and the draw uniformity. This paper presents a back-analysis of extraction and dilution behaviour at Codelco?s El Salvador and Andina Divisions, which use panel caving as a mining method. This analysis was conducted in order to review the existent dilution entry mechanisms and calculation methods. Three sources of dilution were identified. The first source is ?gravitational dilution?, which is due to gravitational flow and mixing as dilution migrates by gravity from a sector located above the panel under analysis. The second source of dilution is ?caving dilution?, which occurs when an air gap is formed in a large area and a sudden propagation of a hang-up occurs, inducing early ingress of waste into the production level from a level above. The third mode observed is ?lateral dilution?, which occurs when the panel is located next to an exhausted sector and the broken material enters the draw column early during draw. In the last two cases, dilution could migrate large distances horizontally. The mine data indicated that draw and caving strategy are key for long-term planning of large panel caves.
