Surface analysis by X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) of samples taken from the galena flotation section of the Hilton Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines Limited are presented. Flotation rate and pulp chemical data taken during the sampling period are also presented and discussed. Surface analysis suggested that, under normal operating conditions, an overlayer of precipitated calcium sulfate existed at the surface of the sulfide minerals. In particular, there was a decrease in the surface concentration of calcium sulfate for the concentrate samples relative to that occurring on the tailing samples. This suggests that the flotation process was selective against minerals which have calcium sulfate predominating at the surface. Heterocoagulation of hydrophilic calcium sulfate on to the galena surface considerably reduced galena flotation rate. Methods to control calcium sulfate precipitation, which include sodium carbonate treatment of the pulp, are also discussed. Sur- face analysis results of samples taken from the Hilton Concentrator during sodium carbonate addition to the grinding circuit are also presented. This shows clear evidence for the removal of calcium sulfate from the mineral surfaces without concomitant surface precipitation of calcium carbonate. Reasons for the apparent dispersion of precipitated calcium carbonate are discussed. Galena flotation rate was increased by the addition of sodium carbonate apparently due to the removal of interfering calcium sulfate.

Open-source technology for supporting the Industry 4.0 has become the target of academic research in many sectors. This study reviewed the trends of open-source technology, its forms, and some industrial applications. As a case study using open-source hardware and software for the mining industry, this study proposed a low-cost environmental monitoring system for non-metallic underground mines to support mine safety and occupational health issues. The system was developed using open-source hardware, Arduino and 3D printer, to design the monitoring device. An open-source software, MIT App Inventor, was used for developing an Android application for smartphones to enable remote communication with the system. Field experiments were conducted at an underground tunnel and a non-metallic underground mining site to assess the performance of the system in both mobile and static modes, respectively. Although a few limitations related to the precision of the low-cost dust and gas sensors still exist, the findings of the experiments show that the mining industry can benefit from open-source technology deployment when considering cost factors

Cleveland-Cliffs lron Co., which operates Marquette lron Mining Co.'s Republic mine, conducted a test whereby 35,000 tons of self-fluxed pellets were produced in the grate-kiln system from specular hematite flotation concentrates. A brief description of the pelletizing plant is presented along with pertinent operating details. Date is included which compare operating conditions and the chemical and physical properties of the green and fired pellets for the self-fluxing pelletizing test with the normal acid pelletizing operation. The success of self-fluxed sinter in enhancing the operation of the blast furnace during the past few years has reasonably led to the assumption that the use of self-fluxed pellets might result in even greater furnace efficiencies. A great share of development work in agglomeration has been directed towards techniques related to the production of self-fluxed pellets, but only a limited tonnage of self-fluxed pellets had been produced on a commercial scale until this past year when The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. produced 35,000 tons of such pellets by the grate kiln system at the Republic mine during the period May 21-June 5, 1962. REPUBLIC'S GRATE-KILN PLANT The grate-kiln pelletizing process consists of four stages, namely: feed or balling circuit, traveling grate, rotary kiln and annular cooler (Fig. 1). The balling section is conventional and utilizes four 9x30-ft balling drums in closed circuit with 5x14-ft vibrating screens having 3/8-in. rod decks. The traveling grate is 12 ft wide by 126 ft long and has 14 windboxes — six in the drying section and eight in the preheat section. The rotary kiln is 15 ft ID shell and 114 ft long. The annular cooler is 40 ft in diameter and has 12 windboxes. The cooler is divided into two zones by a moveable curtain wall. The high temperature air from the first zone is used as secondary combustion air in the kiln. Normally the only heat supplied is through the burning of No. 6 oil in the single kiln burner. Hot gases pass counter to the pellet flow through the system. The exit gases from the kiln pass down draft through the preheat section through cyclones and are drawn through the drying bed prior to exiting via the stack. The temperatures are normally held within the following ranges: Kiln 2400-2445 °F Preheat 1850-1950°F Drying 480-520°F Exit gas 200°F Pellets 120°F The design capacity of the Republic mine grate-kiln system was 2500 Itpd. Sustained production in excess of 35% over design capacity has been achieved. No screening of the cooler product is practiced. PELLETIZING TEST CONDITIONS When a decision was made to proceed with a test at the Republic mine pelletizing plant to produce 35,000 tons of self-fluxed pellets, several potential failure factors had to be carefully considered. Research work on a batch and pilot plant scale indicated that the grate-kiln system at Republic would require some major changes in order to obtain optimum conditions. In many cases compromises were agreed upon as major equipment changes and revisions were not feasible. The pelletizing conditions which laboratory development tests revealed were required in order to insure successful production of self-fluxed pellets were: 1) Good mixing of limestone and concentrate and proper moisture control; 2) Higher gas flow rates in the preheat section than are normally used; 3) Higher preheat temperatures than normal; 4) Maximum kiln temperature 2350°F. There was just cause for concern about balling problems that might occur. Currently in Canada there are 15 major mining companies with a minimum of $1 billion in market capitalization or net private value. This group forms the core of an important sector for Canada. The mining sector had gross revenues of about $35 billion in 1988. This compares to a Canadian GDP of $410 billion in 1988. There are at least three different sub-groups within the mining group, each facing the future with very different prospects for the coming years.

Two mine-fire experiments were conducted in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) which demonstrated that smoke from diesel-fuel fires of 500 kW and 660 kW heat-release rates in a return airway can develop, without causing a complete air flow reversal, into a roof layer that can migrate upwind forming a counter flow to the primary airflow in a crosscut. Subsequently, smoke can penetrate into an intake airway and create a hazardous atmosphere in the intake airway upwind from the fire. Visibility conditions less than 13 m were created by the smoke in the intake airway downwind from the crosscut. Modeling of the event with a three-dimensional, time-dependent, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program correctly represented the smoke movement.

"THE SUPER CYCLE IS GONE The utopia of the rising sales volume, for mining companies from 2002-2011, was entirely due to rising production volume and prices. The Australian mining sector experienced an 18 percent annual growth rate in revenues, and 11 percent growth in prices. (1) However, EBIT remained flat during the same time period. In addition, Australian mines saw a 7 percent annual decline in both labor and capital productivity. (2) Mines in the U.S. and Canada produced similar results, whereas the world-wide mining industry has seen a productivity drop of 40% since 2001. (3) The decade “Bull Run” of rising prices was trashed by companies that chased low-quality assets while increasing debt on their balance sheet. It seemed everyone believed the “super cycle” would last forever, while completely ignoring the history of cycle downturns. Worldwide mining operations are as much as 28 percent less productive today than a decade ago, according to new McKinsey research. The results from McKinsey’s new MineLens Productivity Index (MPI), which adjusts for declining ore grades and mine cost inflation, show that the pronounced decline in productivity is evident across different commodities and is seen in most mining players and geographies. (4) McKinsey sees three important areas of focus to address the root causes of productivity decline. 1) Embed effective management operating systems at mines 2) Prioritized operational excellence and capabilities development 3) Focus on innovation Reality has now settled back in and companies are struggling to make ends meet. The basic management staple of controlling costs and improving the production/productivity that was lost in the excitement is now back in play. Traditional cost-cutting approaches, such as across-the-board spending cuts, layoffs, and hiring freezes are only short-term initiatives and will not permanently improve a company’s cost structure or improve long- term competitiveness. This can only be accomplished by engaging front-line employees and empowering them to make necessary improvements in their daily work. It is time for leaders to lead and develop cultures of continuous improvement within their organizations in order to sustain their mining project to the end of mine life. Successful operating managers require two different skill sets of Leadership and Management; knowing how to lead people in their organization and how to manage the work they do."

Drilled shafts and precast concrete piles were installed for the foundation of several structures in a reconfiguration project of a refinery in Minatitlan, Veracruz, in the Gulf of Mexico. The soils are alluvial deposits of flat land from the Coatzacoalcos River, which are embedded with layers of sand, soft clay, and peat. As part of a QC/QA program, load tests, both static and dynamic, axial and lateral, were performed. In this paper results of 32 axial tests are presented, in which typical load-displacement curves were measured at the top of the foundation elements; from the interpretation of these plots, data were recorded for ultimate side shear and in some cases for end bearing capacities, which are compared with the theoretical results of the final stage of the foundation design. The comparison shows that under allowable loads, side shear determines the bearing capacity of piles, even when the tip is embedded in a hard layer. Underestimation of the side shear is evident; therefore design criteria, as well as the methods used for obtaining soil parameters, should be reviewed.

Modern metallurgical plants typically have complex flowsheets and operate on a continuous basis. Real time interactions within such processes can be complex and the impacts of streams such as recycles on process efficiency and stability can be highly unexpected prior to actual operation. Current desktop computing power, combined with state-of-the-art flowsheet simulation software like Metsim, allow for thorough analysis of designs to explore the interaction between operating rate, heat and mass balances and in particular the potential negative impact of recycles. Using plant information systems, it is possible to combine real plant data with simple steady state models, using dynamic data exchange links to allow for near real time de-bottlenecking of operations. Accurate analytical results can also be combined with detailed unit operations models to allow for feed-forward model-based-control. This paper will explore some examples of the application of Metsim to real world engineering and plant operational issues.

A system of steel sheeting and multiple levels of high capacity double corrosion protected soil anchors were used to restrain a major slope failure that occurred at the base of the Watchung Mountains mid-way through construction of a 650,000 SF retail center along Route 22 in Watchung, New Jersey. The implementation of a design-build earth retaining structure was necessary to stabilize and repair the disturbed mountainside in a timely fashion to permit completion of the retail center on a fast track schedule. The tied back steel sheetpile wall was approximately 2,000 feet long and varied in height from 12 to 25 feet. The hillside extended approximately 350 feet above and 600 feet beyond the wall with the main failure scarp extending 50 feet above and 90 feet beyond. The wall was constructed in a top-down manner and required the installation of 475 anchors to resist loads of up to 70 kips/ft produced by the creeping hillside and groundwater flows from both a series of springs and steady state seepage through an inclined zone of fine sand. Incorporation of a unique tie point connection eliminated the need for a waler, facilitating and simplifying modifications to anchor locations based on anchor load test results and conditions encountered during construction. Post grouting also proved to be an essential element in the successful construction. This paper presents the design and the construction methods used to restrain the significant earth lateral loads produced by a slope failure using steel sheeting tied back with high capacity soil anchors with anchor loads distributed to the sheeting through a unique tie point connection on a fast track schedule. Installation techniques, testing programs, and construction quality control are also discussed.

A implantação do ProQuali possibilitou a realização de análises de campanha para produtos críticos pela equipe técnica e auxiliou a equipe operacional na tomada de decisão online durante o processo. Com isto foi possível evidenciar uma evolução significativa nos principais indicadores do laminador: índice de rendimento metálico (RM), utilização (IU) e geração de produtos não conforme (NC).

This paper will discuss the inherent value engineering associated with the design and construction of approximately 184,000 SF of anchored tieback wall, installed as part of the widening and drainage improvements for KY9 in Campbell County, Kentucky. The total project is 2.2 miles in length. The anchored walls, excavation grading and drainage total to a complete project cost of $28.4 million. This is one of the largest design-build projects undertaken by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It also features another first for the Transportation Cabinet - the general contractor is responsible for quality control/quality assurance. The project is located just south of Cincinnati, OH and is situated along the east bank of the Licking River. The slopes along this stretch of the river have had a long history of movement and instability. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet advertised the anchored wall portion of this project to be designed and constructed by pre-approved specialty contractors. The Transportation Cabinet provided the basic design parameters to each specialty contractor. Aspects to be discussed include the site and project history, previous attempts at slope stabilization along existing KY9, the technical proposal and bidding process, and the actual design and construction.

The autogenous grinding method has been progressively employed in mineral dressing plants during the last 15 years. The term has been used with somewhat different meanings (1), (2), (3). In this paper the author will use it in the most restricted way, for processes where run-of-mine ore (rock) in one step is reduced to a grind product by the action of the ore itself without any other grinding media present. The pebble grinding process where the major part of the ore enters the mill as finely crushed product which is ground further with selected coarse ore pieces acting as grinding media, is not considered autogenous grinding. Processes where a minor amount extraneous media as steel-balls is added to supplement an autogenous mill charge will be called semiautogenous. Other terms need also to be defined. "Mill charge" will be used about the active part of the mill content which performs the grinding, that is the steel balls in ball grinding and the coarse ore pieces in pebble and autogenous grinding. The interstitial nearly finished material is not included in the term "mill charge", and for the wet grinding operations is called the "mill pulp' The term "pebble" will be used for any rounded ore or rock piece in the mill charge whether it is an autogenous or a pebble grinding operation.

The ‘Metallurgical Operations’ Department of Grinaker-LTA Process Engineering (GLTA) currently undertakes then primary mining as well as the re-deposition of tailings forTicor South Africa (Ticor) at their Hillendale mine near Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The mining plant, which was designed by GLTA on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis, is capable of mining 780 000 tons per month of ROM material which is then pumped to the Primary Wet Plant for treatment by Ticor. Hydraulic mining via high pressure water cannons and subsequent transfer of the heavy mineral slurry at an RD of between 1.35 and 1.48, has never before been undertaken successfully at this level of production on an in situ reserve. The presentation will take the form of a case study in which the unique site operating conditions will be detailed and discussed, as will the innovative process and engineering solutions employed by GLTA to overcome the engineering and production challenges encountered. In order to protect the intellectual property involved in this operation, this paper is fairly general in nature, and attempts merely to provide the reader with a broad perspective understanding of the operation, and some of the difficulties encountered during the early stages of production.

"Triton Mining Corporation acquired the rights to Mina El Limon in Nicaragua in 1993 by international bid. The bid included the gold operations at Limon and an exploration concession of approximately 4000 km2. Triton assumed control of operations and exploration in May 1994.The Limon mine is located in west-central Nicaragua, approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Managua. The climate is tropical, characterized by a wet season from May through October, and a dry season November through April. Gold at Limon is associated with both banded quartz and silicified breccia veins in Tertiary volcanic rocks, belonging to the lower Coyol Group. Mining is from two open pits and one mechanized underground operation. A second underground mine is currently under development for production during 1997.This paper describes the expansion of the milling facility at El Limon from a nominal capacity of 400 tonnes/day, producing approximately 20,000 ounces of gold annually, to the existing 900 tonne per day mill operation. Engineering of the new mill facility was initiated in September 1994 and construction was completed a year later."

"Steel manufacturers have noticed a decided tendency on the part of many of their customers to become more exacting in their steel specifications. Under these conditions, the steel must not only meet the specifications of physical properties (tensile strength, reduction of area, elongation, impact strength, grain size, normality, etc.) and the chemical analyses, but must also pass the inspection test of ""cleanliness.""By cleanliness is commonly meant the absence of oxide and sulphide inclusions. Other foreign particles such as furnace or ladle slag, ladle and runner brick, etc., must also be absent. The determination of cleanliness at present is usually made by microscopic inspection or macroetching.The rejection of steel for lack of cleanliness is increasing, out cleanliness is one of the most difficult requirements for the manufacturer to fill. The reason for this is that every steel inspector has a different conception of a. clean steel. A material which does not pass the examination of one inspector way be regarded as entirely satisfactory by the metallurgist of an¬other company. The cause of this confusion and disagreement concerning the definition of a clean or a dirty steel is simply that as yet no standardized procedure for the determination of impurities has been proposed and generally accepted, since many variables are encountered which interfere with the development of a satisfactory method. An idea of the complexity of this situation will be obtained from the following pages.A Survey of Proposed Analytical MethodsAlthough no analytical method has been accepted, many procedures have been proposed, as may be seen in Table 1. Therein are listed 16 of the better-known processes, pith references to the work of their originators, their mechanisms of determination, and their applicabilities. Bubble attachment time measurements for the rare-earth phosphate minerals monazite and xenotime were made as a function of oleate concentration, sodium fluoride addition, and temperature. Results indicate that the rare-earth phosphates behave similarly to other phosphate minerals, notably collophanlte and fluorapatite, which have been studied previously. The addition of sodium fluoride yielded a modest decrease in bubble attachment time with fluoride additions below the apparent fluoride surface precipitation point, while at fluoride additions greater than the apparent precipitation point a significant decrease in attachment time occurs. Increasing the temperature or the system gave a slight decrease in bubble attachment time in the absence or sodium fluoride. With sodium fluoride addition and below the apparent fluoride surface precipitation point, an increase in temperature actually increased the attachment time. For sodium fluoride additions above the apparent fluoride surface precipitation point, a temperature increase significantly decreased the attachment time.
