Autonomous mining systems have been deployed for improving mine performance. However, there is a fear of job losses. Adoption of autonomous systems is envisaged to be resisted by major stakeholders in Ghana due to high illiteracy and unemployment. This paper assesses the preparedness of Ghanaian mining stakeholders for the adoption of autonomous systems to Ghana’s surface mining industry. Closed and open-ended questionnaires were administered to mine stakeholders. Respondents generally expressed unwillingness to accept autonomous systems into Ghanaian mines due to fear of increased unemployment. We propose setting up a mining education fund (MEF) for training stakeholders in autonomous mining systems. INTRODUCTION Mining contributes enormously to the sustenance and growth of global and national economies through the provision of raw materials, employment, revenues and foreign exchange (Carvalho, 2017; ICMM, 2017; Cordes et al., 2016; Solomon et al., 2008; Walser, 2000). The International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM, 2014) reported that globally, formal mining employs approximately 2.5 million people. Many resource-rich countries, especially the developing ones, have experienced strong socioeconomic growth propelled by the discovery and extraction of valuable minerals. McMahon and Moreira (2014) reported a positive linkage between mining and sustainable development. They revealed that averagely, resource-rich countries have improved Human Development Index (HDI) scores than countries without mineral resources. Mining remains a crucial industry in Ghana’s economic development (Bermúdez-Lugo, 2016; Amponsah-Tawiah and Dartey-Baah, 2011). Over the years, mining has contributed significantly to the gross domestic product (GDP) of Ghana. In 2013, mining accounted for 1.7% of Ghana’s GDP and about 19% of government revenues (Ghana Chamber of Mines, 2015). The Ghana Chamber of Mines also reported that mining contributed over 50% of foreign direct investment, 37% of export earnings and 1.1% of direct employment revenues. The US Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that 65% of coal, 92% of metals and 96% of industrial minerals are mined using surface mining methods (DOE, 2007). Generally, mining is a capital-intensive venture, with high operating cost, hence there is a constant demand for mining companies to seek efficient cost reduction and production maximization strategies. One strategy being pursued keenly is automation, which is noted to improve productivity, and worker safety at minimal cost. According to Parreira (2013), mining automation involves direct teleoperation whereby workers remotely control the mining process using computers from a control room.

This report describes a Bureau of Mines study undertaken to determine the applications and limitations of solution techniques as a general method of fluorescent X-ray spectrographic analysis. Systematic errors due to variations in particle size, surface preparation, and sample inhomogeneity are eliminated by the use of solutions. The range of applicability of fluorescent X-ray spectrography is increased in two ways: (1) Samples in the form of wire, filings, turnings, etc., can be analyzed as solutions, and (2) samples submitted as solutions can be analyzed as received 0 The lower limit of detectability varies from 0.14 gram per liter for sulfur, atomic number 16, to 0.0015 gram per liter for strontium, atomic number 38. Most elements have limits of detectability between 0.02 and 0.002 gram per liter.

Titanium ranks as one of the more abundant elements, is widely distributed, and occurs in concentrated form in numerous deposits. This substance was discoveres 140 years ago; but despite the efforts of metallurgists and chemists to find a place for it in industry, only within the last 10 or 15 years has the increased use of titanium pigments provided any extensive outlet for titanium ores. Even to-day titanium is confined to a few highly specialized industrial applications. The metal itself is now quoted regularly in trade journale, but scarcely yet can it be said that the production or use of the metal. has progressed very far beyond the laboratory stage. Ferroalloys containing the element were largely used for a time, especially in connection with the manufacture of Bessemer steel rails; but as American rail- ways adopted open-hearth rails in preference to Bessemer rails, the demand for the alloys in the rail manufacture gradually dwindled into insignificance. New outlets for ferrotitanium have been found in the steel industry; and the production of titanium alloys, both in the United States and in Europe, has increased in recent years. By far the largest use of titanium at the present time, however, is in pigments. The manufacture of titanium white began in Norway, but at present the United States is the leading producer. One of the two companies now operating in the United States is also the leading factor in European production. Although titanium occurs, in many minerals, the principal commercial sources are rutile (the natural oxide, Ti02) and ilmenite (iron-titanium oxide, FeO. TiO2). The latter is a coal-black mineral, but it is the one used in the manufacture of the titanium white of commerce, as well as in the manufacture of ferroalloys and arc-lamp electrodes. Rutile, the natural oxide, is not pure white and, being less common in nature, costs more; it is, therefore, reserved for use in the manufacture of titanium chemicals employed in relatively small amounts in dye works and bleacheries and for sundry minor purposes. This paper summarizes the titanium industry, with special reference to its economic aspects. It is offered as a survey of current trade literature and as a digest of material in the files of the bureau and is presented in response to numerous inquiries from prospective producers as to ways and means of exploiting deposits. (At present, much of the ilmenite consumed in this country comes from overseas, principally from British India..). A forthcoming circular, devoted to deposits of titanium-bearing ores, deals with foreign and domestic sources of supply.

The trona deposits near Green River, in southwestern Wyoming are world class in size and quality. They contain more than 25 times the reserves of the next largest trona deposit at Lake Magadi in Kenya. Based on present rates of production, the Green River reserve should last for more than 500 years. Since their discovery in 1938, the Union Pacific Corp. has been instrumental in the promotion, development and production of soda ash in Wyoming. Union Pacific spent several years drilling the deposits and trying to promote them to chemical companies. In 1947, Westvaco and Union Pacific entered into what became the first trona lease agreement. Today, the Green River Basin leads the world in soda ash production, accounting for about 25% of the world's supply. Green River producers process more than 14.5 Mt/a (16 million stpy) of trona to produce more than 8 Mt/a (9 million stpy) of soda ash. The future for Green River soda ash looks good, with more of the world looking towards the cheaper and higher quality source of soda ash coming from the natural deposits. Production from the Green River deposits should continue to grow as trade barriers and tariffs begin to fall in Europe and energy and environmental costs force the synthetic producers to exit the market.

As in other industries, companies engaged in mining and extraction use and develop intellectual property (?IP?) in the form of new technologies or production processes. The development of IP assets in mining may occur as a byproduct of ongoing operations, or result from investment in dedicated R&D efforts. New technology may lower costs, increase quality of output, and/or increase operational efficiency or safety. Key business questions with respect to any new technology are how best to use IP assets, how to protect them and how to derive value from them. IP assets can provide a competitive advantage to a developing firm that uses the technology to improve its operating results. The developing firm can preclude others from using the technology if it believes that is the best way to exploit the technology?s value. Or, it can be shared with others taking care to ensure rights are maintained, thereby generating royalty income or strategic value through cross licensing or other business relationships. Either way, in order to fully realize the maximum economic benefit, innovators must protect the IP assets and control their dissemination.

SO much has been written recently about the use of silver to replace scarce metals that certain facts about silver and its uses should be of interest. Figures for the production and use of silver, taken from the Handy & Harman annual reviews of the silver market, are given in Table 1. It will be seen that the rate of production has remained fairly constant and has been affected in recent years by the production of base metals, of which silver is a by-product. In each of the years 1937, 1938, and 1939, the U.S. Government acquisitions alone exceeded the entire world production, the difference, of course, being made up by imports of previously accumulated stocks. In 1940 and 1941 the U. S. Government acquisitions plus the United States and Canadian uses in the arts and industries exceeded the Western Hemisphere production. The U.S. Government pays a premium price for silver newly mined in the United States, at present 71.11c. compared with the price of 35'/8c. for foreign silver, with the result that the current U. S. production is not used commercially for the arts and industries. At the time this is written (June 1942) there is much uncertainty as to the future effect of this situation.

The necessary uniformity of mixture to produce slags of regular composition and the choice of the slag—forming ingredients and products to be formed can be made only before the charge to dropped.It was found (R.I. 3096) at Kellogg, where the charge is mostly sinter, that the ratio of the slag—forming ingredients taken from each tuyere was nearly constant, in contrast to the irregular composition of slags taken similarly from a furnace whose charge consisted of ingredients differing greatly in chemical and physical nature, including size. If the charge consists almost entirely of sinter, the blast furnace should then operate more uniformly."

Underground mining of stone in the US is increasing, as is the depth of overburden above the mines. Data gathered from mine visits, maps, discussion with operators and numerical simulation have been used to investigate pillar design and recommend safe practice. Many pillars have slender shapes with relatively large adjacent mine openings: width-to-height ratios range from 0.54 to 3.13 and extraction ratios from 0.56 to 0.91. The pillar material is often very strong and average overburden only 80 m, but occasional failure due to excessive local stress has occurred where pillar size had been unintentionally reduced, overburdens were greater than 200 m, width-to-height ratios were less than 1.25 or extraction ratios were greater than 0.83. Pillars with width-to-height ratios of less than 1.5 appear more likely to fail under excessive stress. When width-to-height ratios fall below 1.0, defects such as through-running discontinuities can have a significant influence on stability. Dip, orientation and material properties are also important

"Highland Valley Copper is a conventional truck-shovel mining and flotation concentrator operation located 75 km southwest of Kamloops, British Columbia (Fig. 1).The ore is situated within a porphyry copper deposit and is mined at a rate of 135,000 mt/day from two separate open pits. The nearby mill produces concentrates containing 375 million pounds of copper and 5 million pounds of molybdenum metal yearly. In the Valley pit, head grades are roughly 0.40% Cu at a 0.23% Cu equivalent cut-off. The Valley pit strip ratio currently sits at 0.55:1 with waste quantities made up of separate rock and unconsolidated overburden units. From the mill, concentrates are trucked to nearby Ashcroft and then hauled by rail to ocean port facilities in Vancouver. The mine employs 950 people and is planned to operate until 2009. The operation is a partnership between Teck Cominco (63.9%), BHP Billiton (33.6%), and others (2.5%). Management is shared by the two principal owners and directed by a management committee."

In its April 1991 issue, MINING ENGINEERING published a salary survey form asking for information relating to engineering and management jobs in the minerals industry. 1038 of these forms were filled out and returned, most of them being received in the magazine's offices at SME headquarters before the end of June 1991. An SME volunteer took on the task of tabulating and analyzing data from the forms, but the press of other business interfered with this work, and publication has been delayed until this issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Appreciation is extended to SME members who took the time to fill out and return the salary survey forms, and our apologies go to MINING ENGINEERING'S readers for the delay in publication. Of the total number of forms received, more than 97% were from SME members. The geographic distribution of the respondents closely mirrored that of SME membership as a whole, about 50% being from the Society's Western Region, 19% from the Central Region, and 23% from the Eastern Region. About 8% were from outside the US. Average salaries for each of the four geographic areas ranged between $55,000 and $60,000, with the highest average in Eastern Region (Fig. 1). Respondents were asked to answer a number of questions formulated to determine if there are significant differences in salaries based on the type of organization for which they work. As indicated by Table 1, salary averages at mining companies do not vary markedly with the size of the company: • Large companies, defined as those having more than $1 billion in annual sales, accounted for just over 16% of the returns. Their average salary was $61,840 per year.

The steps for the beneficiation of iron ores differ from ore to ore, depending on the mineralogical phases of the particular iron ore and the nature of the association of the gangue minerals with iron oxide in that ore. The extent to which the beneficiation can be undertaken economically depends both on the amount and the nature of the gangue. The analysis of the phases present in an orebody optimises the mining and process operations (separation, beneficiation, sintering, etc).X-ray diffraction (XRD) provides qualitative and quantitative information about the main ore phases as well as the gangue mineralogy and the amorphous content present in a sample. In addition, modern quantification methods such as Rietveld refinement allow the calculation of the distribution of elements in solid solutions such the substitution of Fe with Al in goethite or hematite.The use of high speed detectors has made XRD an important tool for grade and process control. Finger printing of XRD data can facilitate multi-dimensional mapping of ore deposits and drill cores, identifying regions of favourable mineral compositions. Grade control using XRD can be completely automated and controlled remotely.The two case studies in this paper demonstrate how XRD and finger printing can be used for grade control, process optimisation and quality control of a goethitic and a magnetitic iron ore. The enormous potential of XRD as an inexpensive, reliable tool, useful in the characterisation of iron ores will be demonstrated.CITATION:K÷nig, U, 2013. THIS BULLETIN analyzes and summarizes research at the Bureau of Mines dealing with the preparation, properties, and reactions of iron carbides in the period 1948-60, part of which was sponsored by Wright Air Development Laboratories. The objective was to develop better catalysts for the synthesis of methane and higher hydrocarbons from hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The investigations resulted in the first adequate characterization of epsilon iron carbide, which later proved to be an important intermediate in the tempering of martensite in steel. At temperatures near 170° C, the carbon in carbon monoxide reacts nearly quantitatively with finely divided alpha iron to form an iron carbide in which the metal atoms occupy the positions of the close packed hexagonal arrangement with lattice parameters of ao=2.754 A and co=4.349 A. The carbide has a composition within 2 atomic percent of that required for the formula Fe2C, a Curie point of about 370° C, a specific magnetization of 160.4 ergs per gauss-gram Fe at 50° C, and a ferromagnetic moment of 1.70 Bohr magnetons. Epsilon iron carbide can be converted to chi iron carbide by thermal treatment at 343° C for about 70 hours. The chi iron carbide so formed has a Curie point of 247° C, a specific magnetization of 142.5 ergs per gauss-gram Fe at 50° C, a ferromagnetic moment of 1.72 Bohr magnetons per iron atom, and a paramagnetic moment of 5.5 Bohr rnagnetons per iron atom. Direct synthesis of this carbide from carbon monoxide at 240° C indicates a composition within 7 atomic percent of that required for Fe2C. Chi iron carbide can be converted to cementite at 550° C in about 315 minutes. The theta iron carbide so prepared has a Curie point of 210° C, a specific magnetization of 147.3 ergs per gauss gram Fe at 50° C, a ferromagnetic moment of 1.72 Bohr magnetons per iron atom, and a paramagnetic moment of 3.9 Bohr magnetons per iron atom. Pure chi iron carbide reacts to form theta iron carbide by the elimination of free carbon. In the presence of an excess of free iron in intimate contact with the carbide, chi iron carbide reacts with the free iron to form theta iron carbide. The second reaction proceeds at an appreciable rate at 320° C and can be used to snythesize finely divided theta iron carbide with no free-carbon impurity at low temperatures. The ease of the reaction in the presence of free iron suggests that chi iron carbide is an intermediate in the tempering of epsilon iron carbide to theta iron carbide as it proceeds in steels. Experiments on carbon steel show that the magnetic moment of the iron atoms in martensite is about 2.2 Bohr magnetons per atom, a value approximately the same as that of the iron atoms in alpha iron. The Curie points of epsilon iron carbide, chi iron carbide, and theta iron carbide were found -in various specimens of tempered steel to be 10° to 20° C lower than normal values. This shift is probably the result of manganese in solid solution. Preparations of various compositions of epsilon iron carbonitrides show many effects of extensive isomorphism between epsilon iron carbide and epsilon iron nitride. The action of carbon monoxide on finely divided alpha iron at 400° C results in free carbon deposits containing filaments about 0.1 micron in diameter and several times as long. The filaments are characterized by nuclei of dense material located midway from each end of the filament. Although carbiding to near completion at 240° C over periods of about 300 hours produces a preparation containing no appreciable percentage of epsilon iron carbide, very brief periods of carbiding of the order of a minute result in the formation of detectable epsilon iron carbide even at temperatures as high as 325° C. The data indicate that epsilon iron carbide is an intermediate in the formation of chi iron carbide during its formation from carbon monoxide in the gas phase. Attempts to convert cementite to chi iron carbide by cold work increased the Curie point but did not change the X-ray powder diffraction pattern.

Miners in underground coal mines experience prolonged exposure to high noise levels, often with A-weighted sound levels in excess of 90 dB. Field tests have shown that the continuous miner conveyor is a dominant noise source. This paper will identify the most significant noise-radiating surfaces on the continuous miner tail section using vibration levels and surface areas to estimate the sound power levels of each surface. In addition, using five test cases, this study will examine the effects of three engineering noise controls on the surface-averaged vibration levels and average sound levels measured with four microphones located two meters from the tail section. The noise-radiating surfaces of the conveyor’s tail section include the top and bottom decks, the sideboards, and the flex plates. Emphasis is placed on the changes in the estimated sound power levels in the 500 – 2500 Hz 1/3-octave bands since this frequency range accounts for 80-85% of the sound energy near the tail section. The results show that the bottom deck is the most significant noise radiator for the untreated miner. Installing a coated bottom deck reduces the estimated sound power level radiated from the bottom deck by 11 dB and the average sound level by 2 dB. Using a coated tail roller results in reductions of the estimated sound power levels for individual components from 1 to 4 dBand reduces the average sound level by 2 dB. Coating the slide plate has little effect on both the estimated radiated sound power levels and the average sound level. The test results indicate that modifications that reduce flex plate vibration and reduce energy transfer from the tail roller into the tail section will be effective in reducing noise when combined with a coated tail roller and coated return deck.

Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation is a zinc-lead mine located in southern of Namibia. It is currently considering the development of a low grade ore body containing about 2.8% zinc. This ore can be utilised by the concentrator if it could be upgraded prior to the ball mill. Preliminary work indicated that the ore may be upgraded in a pre-beneficiating stage by using dense medium separation, X-ray sorting or a combination thereof to a feed grade of minimum 9% zinc. This paper describes the process followed in evaluating the technologies for pre-beneficiation. The results from test work indicated that the low grade ore is amenable to pre-beneficiation by both dense medium separation and X-ray sorting. A comparison between the two technologies showed that dense medium separation marginally outperformed X-ray sorting on grade and recovery. The results for the X-ray sorting were achieved by tuning the calibration curve specifically for the samples tested.

The Trident Gold Deposit is centred on the historical Higginsville Mining Centre, between the world class gold centres of St Ives (+15 Moz) and Norseman (+6.5 Moz) in Western AustraliaÆs productive eastern goldfields. It lies towards the southern end of the Norseman-Wiluna Greenstone belt in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton. The current in situ resource for Trident is estimated at 840 000 ounces, with production to date in excess of 500 000 ounces.Trident is hosted primarily within a thick, weakly differentiated gabbro with subordinate mafic and ultramafic lithologies and comprises a series of north-northeast trending, shallowly north plunging ore zones. The deposit comprises two main mineralisation styles; thin, lode-style, nuggety laminated quartz veins (Athena and Artemis) that formed along major shear zones primarily at the contacts between the various mafic and ultramafic lithologies; and large wallrock-hosted ore-zones comprising sigmoidal quartz tensional vein arrays and associated metasomatic wall rock alteration (eastern zone, western zone and Apollo) hosted exclusively within the gabbro.The thin laminated quartz vein lodes are important to the Trident Gold Deposits production profile as they constitute 33 per cent of the metal from only 14 per cent of the tonnes. The delineation, grade estimation and extraction of these lodes require a disproportionate amount of geological and engineering input due to the small scale variability in width, grade and direction. "Economies of scale and the variable characteristics of many large ore deposits have resulted in grinding installations having large SAG mills fitted with variable speed drives. Problems associated with effective operation of this equipment has created the need for better operator knowledge of mill load behavior and the need for new instrumentation capable of providing accurate information about load movement and composition. This paper discusses two performance enhancing instruments available to address these needs.INTRODUCTIONThe economic demands of new mining projects has resulted in increased equipment sizes and this is particularly evident in milling where there are now many SAG mills operating in the range of 28’ – 40’ diameter with installed powers of 8 – 22 MW. These mills are designed to process very high capacities of ore daily2 and the variable characteristics of many of the deposits mined results in the need to vary the mill speed during processing to cater for the changes in ore hardness. Mill speed changes often result in operational problems associated with high-energy impacts striking the mill liners reducing energy efficiency as well as degrading the grinding media through breakage, accelerating liner wear and in extreme cases even breaking liners. These operational problems have given rise to the need to have instruments aimed at providing operators with accurate information in real time about the load composition and movement within SAG mills.The original concepts for operating SAG mills were derived from past experience of operation of conventional fixed speed ball mills. However, the relatively stable conditions that applies with fixed speed and constant ball charge in ball mills supports theoretical approaches to the grinding process based on energy calculations such as Bond’s Work Index concept. Later a set of parameters Si and Bij were used for describing load kinetics, but all of these methods neglect the details of load movement and how the energy is actually used inside of the mill. It is now commonly accepted as a basic rule that SAG mills grind by impact whilst ball mills grind by attrition and consequently SAG mills are designed and operated to generate a large amount of impacts by the cataracting load without paying sufficient attention to where these impacts are actually occurring. Many mills are operated on the basis that as long as the mill is consuming the expected power there is little attention given to the class of bodies using this energy and this often results in the inefficient use of energy."

The U. S. Bureau of Mines has undertaken the development of mineral industry cost escalation factors to enable the estimation of mineral development and extraction costs for mineralized sites in Alaska throught the use of the Bureau's Cost Estimating System v2.0 (CES 2.0). For the purposes of this document, all calculations are based on, and reflect the economic environment in Alaska in July 1992. The greater cost of mining in Alaska as compared to the contiguous-48 States can be estimated for Alaskan mining operations through (1 ) the analysis of capital and operating costs for analogous mine and mill plants in operation in the contiguous-48 States; (2) the hypothetical relocation of mine and mill plants from their actual location(s) to Alaska by making engineering modifications to the mine and mill plant design as required by the Alaskan site characteristics; (3) calculation of the cost of the required engineering modifications and; (4) the escalation of all costs to a level representative of the economic environment in Alaska at some specific point in time.

Long-range projection of demand for domestic crude oil indicates a continued upward movement and accentuates the need for increasing the recovery from known crude-oil resources to supplement expected future discoveries. Consequently, the industry and Government have given special attention to the viscous or heavy-oil deposits because they offer the distinct possibility of large order increases in ultimate recovery. This report presents data pertaining to 150 heavy-oil reservoirs in Arkansas including oil characteristics of samples from 38 of these reservoirs. To January 1, 1967, about 600 million bbl of heavy oil has been recovered from the 150 reservoirs in 63 oilfields; however, about 4.5 billion bbl, or 88 pct, of oil remained in the ground. Of prime importance is that much of this heavy-oil resource is in reservoirs having characteristics considered favorable for thermal-recovery operations. Data for the thermal projects initiated [thus Ear are presented in individual field discussions. Also discussed is the t crude oil supply-demand situation in the State.
