The present study 'of pure ZnS and NiS and ZnS (marmatite) by detailed electrokinetic methods has shown that by careful control of experimental parameters much new' information on sulphide-water interfaces can be obtained. Time-dependent processes of alteration of sulphide surfaces are foHowed by electrokinetic methods and indicate that the isoelectric point of the surface depends on elemental sulphur coverage, oxidation product coverage, and the conditions which promote or minimize such reaotions in the presence and absence of activator.

Fire-clay blocks lining the combustion chambers of zinc concentrate flash-roasting, furnaces operating at 1,000-1,200° C. have suffered moderately rapid deterioration due to slagging. The attack is accentuated by high temperatures, and is probably caused by lead oxide volatilized from the roasted concentrate.Resistance of refractories to attack increased with increasing alumina content from 30 to 45 per. cent but at 90 per cent alumina spalling was troublesome. Magnesite bricks were'subject to some spalling, but some types may lie satisfactory. Chrome and chrome-magnesite bricks spalled seriously.Material thought to be suitable for use as a monolithic lining slagged badly and an alternative may be tested.INTRODUCTIONThe Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd. uses two multi-hearth furnaces and four flash or suspension roasting furnaces for the roasting .of zinc concentrates at its Risdon Works. The hearth roasting plant has been described previously by Forster (1949).A brief descriptioI1 of the first three flash roasters was given by Gordon and Forster (1955). A fourth flash roasting furnace began operation early in 1957. This furnace is somewhat larger than the earlier furnaces, and the designed capacity is also higher, auxiliary equipment being altered to suit. An important structural difference between the older furnaces and the fourth flash roaster is that the walls of the combustion chamber of the new furnace are lined with high alumina fire-bricks instead of fire-clay blocks. Thischange was made because the fire-clay blocks in the older flash roasters had shown s-evere wastage due to slagging by lead derived from the concentrate.

Data are presented on the global warming issue to reinforce the decision by the U.S to reject the Kyoto protocol. The evidence that CO2 is a problem rather than a benefit is inconclusive and will be discussed in this paper. Nevertheless, for economic reasons alone, the US steel industry will continue to minimize CO2 emissions (and the release of real pollutants) per ton of steel through energy reduction programs. However, relative to inevitable increases in absolute CO2 emissions from the utility industry and the transportation sector, future reductions by the steel industry will be inconsequential in the "big picture."

"AbstractLarge diameter tubular piles offer significant advantages in terms of design performance and economy for major marine structures. This is particularly true for foundations of major overwater bridges in regions of high seismicity such as the west coast of North America. The use of large diameter piles in the range of 2 to 3 m diameter means that fewer piles are required, and the size and mass of the pile caps can be significantly reduced, thereby greatly reducing lateral load demand during seismic events. Another advantage of using larger diameter piles is increased pile stiffness that allows the pile caps to be located at or near the waterline rather than being positioned at or below the mud line. This elevating of the pile cap offers significant cost savings by eliminating the need for deep cofferdams. However, relocation of the pile cap creates new problems and opportunities in regard to the means and methods used to construct the pile cap. With the pile cap at depth, conventional steel sheet pile cofferdams with thick tremie seals are typically used to isolated the cap location and allow dewatering for construction of the cap. However with pile caps positioned up off the bottom, conventional bottom founded cofferdams are no longer cost efficient. Float-in or lift-in cofferdams have been developed to address the need for a more cost efficient method for cap construction. This paper describes the key features of the concept and provides three case history examples of its successful implementation.Pier Construction Using Conventional Sheet-Pile CofferdamsCofferdams are temporary structures used in the construction of bridge piers and other marine structures. Their primary purpose is to hold out water and unstable soil from the construction area, and thereby, allow in-the-dry construction of the permanent structure below the water line and quite often below the mud line. Typically, cofferdams consist of long interlocking steel sheet piles driven through water into the bottom of the waterway. The sheet piles form temporary exterior walls which are typically braced internally with wales and struts. The bottom of the cofferdam is typically sealed with tremie concrete or an impervious clay layer if one exists. The depth at which this type of cofferdam can be used is typically limited by the length of steel sheet pile that can be transported and handled by conventional marine equipment."

India does not possess any soluble potash reserves and depends completely on imports. In this study, an attempt has been made to recover potash (K) values from the mica sample employing thermal and mechanical routes followed by leaching. Direct leaching of mica in different lixiviants is found to be ineffective with very low K-dissolution (1–5%). Heat treatment with different fluxes, such as NaCl, NaOH, and CaCl2, is carried out and almost 85% K-values are recovered. Mechanical activation of mica and with different calcium additives is carried out to recover potash values. K is recovered in leach solution in the form of soluble salts, such as K2CO3, K2SO4, and KOH, and leach residue consists mainly of calcium-alumino-silicates. Using mechanical activation with flux, it is possible to recover >95% K-values from mica sample. Mechanical activation with calcium-based flux is found sustainable in the recovery of K-values from mica.

From presently available components a portable, rugged, reliable apparatus can be built which will be able to detect methane concentrations of 0.1% and lower in air. Sensitivity and design considerations of the apparatus are given. Ways to build even simpler and cheaper apparatus in the future are indicated. Traditionally the problem of detecting and monitoring the presence of dangerous gases present in small concentrations in air has been a difficult one. Whether canaries,' or sophisticated chemical or thermal conductivity methods are used, they seem to be either slow, cumbersome, or otherwise not completely satis factory. A seemingly natural way of gas detection is to measure the strength of absorption undergone by light of a wavelength that the gas to be detected absorbs. This method has been difficult to apply in view of the low power output over a narrow wavelength range in the infrared from traditional glow bar light sources. Besides, the apparatus to select such a narrow band of wavelengths is quite costly and complex. The use of a laser solves these problems simultaneously. Although a variety of lasers are available to detect a variety of gases (such as carbon monoxide or methane) whose early detection would be desirable, this paper deals exclusively with the use of lasers for methane detection. ABSORPTION SPECTRUM OF METHANE IN AIR The absorption spectrum of pure methane is very well known.2-4 There are four fundamental vibrations, all occurring in the infrared of which only two absorb strongly. They occur at 3.3 µ and 7.7 µ. The absorption spectrum is quite complicated due to the fact that the methane molecule can rotate in a variety of rotational quantum states. These rotational states are furthermore split by anharmonic forces such as the Coriolis force.4 When methane is present in air at atmospheric pressure, much of the very fine structure due to the anharmonic force is washed out since the pressure broadening is of the same magnitude as the splitting due to anharmonicity. For most of the spectrum at 3.3 µ, the rotational lines are typically separated by 0.01µ while the individual linewidth is 0.0001 µ. It is thus very important that the laser emit at a wavelength that coincides with one of these rotational lines. Physical testing of rock support for rockbursting conditions has been carried out for over 40 years. A review of this testing shows that it has been mostly component?based, rather than actually testing support systems. Further, it is concluded that none of the testing is truly representative of rockburst loading in a similitude sense. Similitude conditions are not achievable, mainly because the real conditions in a rockburst event, such as seismic source location and magnitude, wave frequencies, amplitudes, and interactions, are not all known. Because such information is not available, and because the results of all testing carried out to date have not been able to define, for support design purposes, the capacity of support systems, ongoing physical testing of rockburst support systems is essential. It is essential that the test should simulate, or actually take place in, a supported rock excavation. A rock support system is a combination of individual support components that work together to retain and contain the rock. In doing this, the components are subjected to loading by the rock and to interactive loading between one component and another. It is necessary to prove the capacity of such rockburst support systems by subjecting them to severe loading, as in direct blasting. The direct blasting approach, pioneered more than 40 years ago, probably still provides the greatest validity as a significant test of rockburst support capabilities, even though it does not simulate a rockburst. Direct blast testing of rockburst support systems in a surface environment, such as in a quarry or on exposed rock cutting surfaces, could represent a practical development of the approach, facilitating the execution and monitoring of tests.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop economical mineral dressing processes for removing objectionable quantities of impurities, such as quartz and pyrite, from refractory clay deposits in east central Missouri. The presence of excessive quartz in these clays causes crazing. Pyrite causes bloating and unsightly dark blobs on the surface of fired refractory brick. The iron concentration in the proper state of oxidation may also act as nucleation centers for carbon crystal growth which can result in bursting of the refractory. Numerous deposits, representing a very large tonnage, have been examined and prospected by various refractories companies and found to contain impurities in objectionable quantities. Upgrading these clays would greatly extend our reserves of high-quality refractory clays. Wet-tabling and wet-cyclone concentration were found to be effective for removal of impurities from clays. Of the two methods, wet-cyclone concentra¬tion would be cheaper and more effective. Although wet-tabling improved the refractory properties of each clay, beneficiation by wet-cyclone produced clays of superior quality. Clay recoveries by wet-cycloning ranged from 56.1 to 81.8 percent of the weight of the crude samples, and the beneficiated clays contained from 71.9 to 94.4 percent of the total alumina. The pyrometric cone equivalent (PCE) was increased from 1 to 3 cones by wet-cycloning. The beneficiated clays also met the reheat shrinkage requirements on refiring to 1,400° C. Missouri is one of the major domestic sources of fare clay. In addition to deposits of high-grade refractory clays, there arc many deposits that contain small percentages of impurities, which render the clays unfit for the production of high-heat-duty firebrick. Development of methods to beneficiate these submarginal clays to usable materials would greatly increase commercial fire clay resources.

S. Gasification is a process that converts a carbon feedstock into synthesis gas (CO+H2). Slagging gasifiers operate at high temperature and pressure and in a corrosive-wear environment from the slag. Cr2O3-based refractory linings are used to protect the steel vessel that comprises the gasifier from the aggressive gasification environment. Increasing service life of the gasifier is one of the keys for wide spread development of this technology. In support of the goals, research on the gasifier atmosphere, the slag chemistry, the interaction of Cr2O3 refractory with different feedstock mixtures (e.g., coal and petcoke) were characterized by post mortem analysis of bricks from service in gasifiers and thermodynamics simulation of the environment. Examples demonstrating how thermodynamic calculations can explain the post mortem results and make predictions of material interactions will be given. Attention is placed on the possibility of Cr+6 in different feedstock mixtures and operating conditions.

STABILIZATION of the adjustment of normal consumption to normal production of world commodities is quite different from reducing production until visible surpluses are consumed. The first means restoration and maintenance of prosperity, the second means merely a temporary alleviation of a condition with the prime cause remaining uncorrected. Overproduction of foodstuffs in some sections of the world while millions starve in other sections represents not so much overproduction of foodstuffs as mal-distribution of foodstuffs. The flour mills of Washington and Oregon normally ship quantities of flour to China. Now, the wheat that would make this flour goes East instead of West. Is this overproduction, or is there something wrong that calls for study, analysis and correction? Can the plan used by the ostrich of hiding its head in. the sand get us by this present world tragedy, or must the challenge to solve this problem be met, constructively? Can we not make out of this breakdown in the world's economic system an opportunity? And use it as the stimulus for remedying the basic cause of the trouble and not content ourselves with devising temporary expedients that aim at remedying this or that of the obvious conditions, in themselves not causes at all but rather the evidence of causes, or that are the symptoms of the real trouble.

Em julho de 2010, a linha de Tiras a Quente da Usiminas, planta de Ipatinga, passou a operar com um novo sistema de controle para o laminador de acabamento. Assim, foi necessário atualizar o simulador offline de set up do Trem Acabador, utilizado frequentemente pelas áreas técnica e operacional. Para isso, toda a lógica de cálculo e formulações matemáticas do sistema online foram assimiladas e empregadas no novo simulador. Os resultados das simulações, quando comparados com os valores gerados pelo modelo online, mostraram-se bastante confiáveis. Sendo assim, conclui-se que o aplicativo desenvolvido está apto para ser utilizado como uma ferramenta de simulação offline do modelo de controle do Trem Acabador. Os benefícios potenciais do uso do simulador são: (i) aumento da produtividade por meio da redução de paradas da linha, (ii) melhoria da qualidade final do produto, (iii) redução do número de experimentos na produção e (iv) ajuste dos parâmetros dos modelos de controle. No presente trabalho são apresentadas e discutidas as características do desenvolvimento, da apresentação e da aplicação desse simulador.

Seismic integration schemes aim to incorporate the rock mass response provided by the historical seismic activity to improve the ability of numerical models to reproduce future response to mining. Up to now, integration schemes considered the events using quasi-static models. This paper presents case studies that consider some of the seismic and modelling issues needed to extend these schemes to include the dynamic characteristics of seismic events. The ultimate aim of an automated integration scheme seems impractical for dynamic modelling. The predictions of the WAVE elastodynamic finite difference program are, however, suitable for modelling limited numbers of events to determine either the near-field velocities and damage or the effect of fractures and excavations on the far-field low frequency response. Les projets d’intégration sismique ont le but d’incorporer la réponse de la masse rocheuse à l’activité sismique historique pour améliorer la capacité des modèles numériques à reproduire la réponse future à l’exploitation minière. Jusqu’à présent, les projets d’intégration étudiaient les évènements avec des modèles quasi-statiques. L’étude présente révèle des études de cas qui considèrent certaines des questions concernant modelage et séismes qui sont nécessaires pour porter plus loin ces projets en incluant les caractéristiques dynamiques des évènements sismiques. Le but final d’un projet d’intégration automatisé semble impraticable pour la modélisation dynamique. En revanche, les prédictions du programme élastodynamique par la méthode des différences finies WAVE sont appropriées à la modélisation d’un nombre limité d’évènements de façon à déterminer soit les vitesses à petite échelle et les dommages, soit les effets des fractures et excavations sur la réponse de basse fréquence à grande échelle. Seismische Integrationsschemata zielen darauf ab, Reaktionen der Gesteinsmasse, die von den Berichten seismischer Aktivitäten stammt, zu inkorporieren um numerische Modelle in die Lage zu versetzen, künftige Antwort zum Bergbau zu reproduzieren. Bis dato betrachteten Integrationsschemata die Fälle mit quasi-statischen Modellen. Diese Arbeit stellt Fallstudien dar, die einige der seismischen und modellierenden Fragen betrachten, die benötigt werden, um diese Schemata auszuweiten, um die dynamischen Charakeristika seismischer Fälle einzuschließen. Das Endziel eines automatisierten Integrationschemas erscheint für das dynamisches Berechnen undurchführbar. Die Vorhersagen des WAVE elastodynamisch begrenzten Unterschiedprogramms sind jedoch verwendbar für das Berechnen von begrenzten Anzahlen von Fällen, um entweder die Nahfeldgeschwindigkeiten und Schaden oder den Effekt von Brüchen und Extraktionen auf der Fernfeld Niederfrequenzantwort festzustellen.

"To remain competitive in an open market, mining companies are more and more requested to optimise their complex and highly multivariate processes. The increasing amount of process data, brought about by intensive use of instrumentation and the progress in computer data acquisition, enhances the need for more and more powerful and robust tools for the analysis and modelling of the process data. Now, with the emergence of multivariate data analysis (MDA) techniques, on-line clustering of mineral process behaviour is possible and could help in the extraction of valuable process operation indicators. MDA can be used in different mineral processes such as flotation, grinding, smelting etc. In this paper, the focus will be on grinding process as it is the one of the most costly node in the mineral processing scheme (i.e. power consuming) and it is a highly multivariable process. Particularly for primary grinding mills (SAG/AG), more instrumentation outputs and more powerful and significant process indicators are needed for efficient control and optimisation.MDA is a novel approach suitable for understanding mineral process behaviour compared to the traditionally approaches based on empirical and phenomenological modelling. Multivariate techniques can be used for several purposes. In this paper, the following objectives will be addressed:operation diagnosis: Shift differentiation and operation test differentiation can be showed by using MDA tools such as principle component analysis and factorial discriminant analysis.operation performance monitoring: operation regimes can be evaluated by clustering based on an economic criterion performance such as costs, tonnage, product quality, profit, etcIdentification of operation behaviour (monitoring) and selection of drift correction trajectories (control):MDA can be used to identify periods of unusual or abnormal process behaviour and to diagnose, if it is possible, causes for such behavior."

Arbitration is a legally recognized alternate litigation for the resolution of civil disputes. The parties agree, either before or after a dispute arises, to submit that dispute to an independent third party for resolution. The decision of that third party is binding on the parties. A decision of an arbitral tribunal, typically referred to as an "award," cannot be reviewed by a court except on very limited grounds, such as fraud. See, e.g., Va. Code 8.01-581.010. Indeed, an arbitral award is typically less subject to judicial review than the decision of a trial court, whose decisions are almost always subject to appellate review as a matter of right. Arbitration is typically the result of a contractual agreement between the parties to submit disputes to arbitration. On occasion, arbitration can be required by statute. For example, the California Department of Transportation requires the arbitration of all disputes arising under its contracts. Public Contract Code, Article 7.1 (§§10240-10240.13). There may be a question whether statutorily required arbitration is truly arbitration or an administrative law disputes resolution procedure. The significance of the difference is that the decisions of administrative law bodies are typically reviewable by a court of law as a matter of right while, as set forth above, arbitral awards are almost never reviewable.

The threat of global warming and its prominent position in public discussion and political debate requires all industry to take stock of its contribution to rising atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases. For the primary metals industry, the first step must be to identify the pattern and range of emissions at each step in the production chain. Only then can the industry assess the economic consequences of the penalties on emissions that will be imposed by governments and regulators and devise cost-effective plans to avoid or mitigate such penalties. While some work has been done to estimate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions using Life Cycle Inventory analysis, this approach is less useful than site-by-site emissions estimates. It is the level of specific emissions at each site that will ultimately deter-mine carbon taxation liabilities and participation in emissions trading schemes. Most mining companies have moved with the times to issue sustainability reports for their operations. But in the absence of any standardized reporting format, it is difficult to make useful comparisons between even the best-reported producers on a like-with-like basis. For this reason, Minecost.com modeled the use of fuels and energy used in mining, milling, shipping and metallurgical treatment to cover ?cradle-to-gate? emissions of greenhouse gases resulting from the production of the major base metals copper, zinc, lead and nickel. Greenhouse gas emissions ? overwhelmingly carbon dioxide ? are associated with the consumption of energy at every step in the production chain, from exploration through mining to the production of refined metal. Producers of primary metal employ diverse technologies to mine, mill, smelt and refine several different types of ore. Every orebody has its own special characteristics. In addition, most base metals are produced in concentrate that must be transported to smelters, with con-sequent emissions consequences.

Various nondestructive testing (NDT) inspection methods are available to evaluate the structural integrity of cast-in-place shafts. The widely used methods include Cross Hole Sonic Logging Testing and Low Strain Testing. Due to its advantages such as low cost, easy operation, quickness and flexibility (no need to plan ahead and prepare inspection tubes or other devices), Low Strain Test is frequently specified in quality assurance programs of many countries or when doubts arise as to the integrity of the finished shafts/piles. The method is well suited for small to middle sized shafts. However it is an indirect NDT testing method and has certain limitations. Data interpretation requires proper training, experience and judgment and, therefore, inconsistent conclusions and reporting may be provided by different testers. To avoid or reduce such inconsistencies, it is best to follow a standardized data interpretation and record classification system. In this paper, a new classification method is presented with examples. A step-by-step data evaluation and interpretation procedure is proposed with examples of real cases to help understand the LST data. The paper also makes recommendations for measures to be taken when anomalies are detected in tested production piles.
