With a demand for increasing energy efficiency and a need for improving bitumen recovery, a highly integrated solution for sustainable lease development of Aurora North of Syncrude has been proposed and implementation plans are underway. Flocculation and thickening technology as an important component of the integrated solution provides Syncrude an opportunity of rapid heat recovery from tailings and more flexible tailings closure and reclamation options. Flocculation of fine-particle suspensions by polymers is a non-equilibrium process whose performance is strongly influenced by physical and chemical variables. While polymeric flocculants are frequently used to establish the chemical conditions favorable for flocculation, the actual performance of a flocculation process generally depends more on the physical variables, such as the hydrodynamic conditions in mixing the flocculants and slurry. In order to study the effect of hydrodynamic conditions on flocculation of Syncrude fine tailings, a standardized laboratory test procedure called power flocculation has been developed in comparison with the conventional manual mixing methods. It is shown that the agitation speed and time in conditioning the flocculant solution and the slurry have a profound effect on the flocculation performances measured by initial settling rates, supernatant clarity and sediment density. It was found that the optimum bench test conditions for power flocculation of Aurora fine tailings with a sand-to-fine ratio (SFR) of about 1:1 are conditioning of the flocculant solution and the tailings slurry at 250 rev/min to 300 rev/min in 20 s to 40 s. The test results are inter-preted with a flocculant adsorption/redistribution kinetic model that helps understanding of the effect of hydrodynamic conditions on flocculant adsorption, floc formation and floc growth.

Conventional methods designate a factor of safety, a deterministic number, to indicate the stability of a mine excavation. However, this deterministic description of excavation stability is frequently insufficient or inaccurate and, sometimes, misleading. Employing the probabilistic analysis to determine the likelihood of mine excavation failures will lead to a better understanding of ground control problems and result in more rigorous designs of the excavations. Based on the theory of probability, two approaches are taken in this study for the probabilistic analysis of excavation stability. The first one utilizes direct integrations for the estimation of failure probabilities of mine excavations. Due to the complexity of the integration, this approach can only be applied to solve relatively simple problems. In order to overcome the limitation of the direct integration method, the second approach employs the first-order second-moment approximation of the failure probabilities for more complex ground control problems. The probabilistic analysis offers a deeper insight into the uncertainty associated with the stability of mine excavations. The study indicates that the distributions of parameter values play a significant role in the mine excavation stability, which can not be disclosed by the conventional methods of stability analysis. Greater dispersiveness of the parameter values will lead to a different probability of failure, although the factor of safety estimated by conventional methods stays the same if the mean values of the parameters are constant. By taking consideration of the probabilistic distributions of the parameters, the probability model can provide more reliable designs of mine excavations.

The report provides guidance for determining those environmental impacts associated with the surface mining of steeply pitching coal seams. In addition to the environmental impacts, four additional issues are addressed, namely (1) Time and motion studies of those coal mining systems employed in mining seams which pitch in excess of 250, (2) Assessment of those mining techniques, (3) Development of rationale for the mining methods employed, (4) Identification of the reclamation practices and determine whether these practices were in compliance with appropriate Federal and State regulations. Five surface mines located in three geologically distinct basins of the United States were analyzed during the period of August through November 1979. The three basins include the Hanna Basin of Wyoming, the North Park Basin of Colorado and the Southern Anthracite Field of Pennsylvania.

Suggestions have been made at various times that there may be a recurrence of lodes similar to those at Kalgoorlie in the country to the south of the Golden Mile, but, so far as is known, there has been no geological evidence to support these suggestions apart from the possible extension of the younger quartz-dolerite greenstone in this direction.Geological mapping carried out by the writer in the Coolgardie district in 1946, provided some additional geological evidence to support this claim, and the ideas then held have since been expanded and are now considered to be sufficiently advanced to present them as concrete suggestions. As will be seen from the following pages, the critical area for lode prospecting is Hannan's Lake, where the basement rocks may include younger quartz dolerite greenstone, which, although perhaps distributed over a smaller area than at Kalgoorlie, could, on structural grounds, have a similar fracture system and similar ore deposition.There is little need to stress the importance discoveries in this area would have in prolonging the life of the field, and stimulating the post-war gold mining revival.Previous Work: Only the publications having a direct bearing on the preparation of this paper are given in the list of selected references, but the writer is very conscious of the fact that much other geological work has been carried out in the Kalgoorlie district since its discovery, by the W.A. Department of Mines, by mining companies, and others, all of which has contributed to the present knowledge of the field, and acknowledgment of the value of this work is given herewith. In presenting the suggestions in this paper a broad structural control of ore deposition is assumed, but this has already been established in other parts of the goldfields of Western Australia, including adjacent areas. In the early nineteen thirties, the Western Mining Corporation commenced work on the basis that there was a close relationship between geological structure and auriferous ore deposition, and a similar approach was first made by the Geological Survey of Western Australia in the South Yilgarn in 1935. These ideas were further developed during later surveys, particularly in the North Yilgarn and the Mount Margaret Goldfield.During the Coolgardie Survey in 1946, broad structural mapping was done in greater detail than before, and the structural ideas were implemented and further developed, leading to some success.Other work to which particular acknowledgment is given is that of Stiltwell, Gustafson and Miller, Forman, Prider and Finucane, at Kalgoorlie, and that of Honman in the Kalgoorlie-Coolgardie district, references to which are given at the end of this paper.Valuable constructive criticism of this paper has been given by Professor E. de C. Proper selection of large walking draglines, based on sound engineering principles and field experience, has not kept pace with the large capital expenditures needed to buy these stripping machines. The use of large walking draglines for stripping overburden in US surface coal mines grows steadily, but equipment selection continues to pose problems. An improper size, model, make, or spoil reach selected for a particular stripping application results in additional, unnecessary coal production costs. Large walking draglines are being used to dig deeper tar sands at the Syncrude operations near Fort McMurray in Northern Alberta, Canada. This application is compared with typical deep digging operations and dragline use prevalent at typical US strip mines.

"Gekko Systems developed the Gekko Resin Exchange Column (G-REX) in order to optimise the recovery of gold in complex leach-to-electrowinning processes, as an intermediate step using a highly gold-selective resin to isolate contaminant metals. The AuRIX®100 resin produced by Purolite is licensed exclusively to Gekko, with the G-REX column designed specifically for this resin (Lewis-Gray et al, 2015). Operational experience has been gained at the CGT Ballarat Gold Plant in near continuous operation since 2008, treating unclarified concentrate leach solution. The extension of the technology to higher throughputs and more complex chemistry is discussed.Aurix®100 ResinAuRIX®100 resin is a cross-linked polystyrene alkaline resin developed by Henkel (Virnig et al, 1996). The resin beads are off-white in colour, spherical, with a nominal size of 100% +600µm. This resin is highly selective for gold and silver over many metals, by way of extracting precious metal cyanide complexes from leach solutions with a pH less than 11.5. The higher end of the pH scale produces best selectivity according to the order of preference: Au > Ag > Hg > Zn > Ni > Cu > Co > Fe. Purolite produces the resin and Gekko Systems maintains licensing of AuRIX®100 resin for use in its G-REX column as part of its unique suite of gravity gold handling equipment.Significant cost savings over carbon-in-solution (CIS) systems are realised with AURIX®100 resin, of around 4% to 12% in capital savings and 27% to 40% in operating costs (Virnig et al, 2004). Allied to this is that AuRIX®100 resin is not susceptible to fouling, that is, the resin does not load with inorganic salts or organic compounds which would affect the loading and extraction of precious metals. To counter any potential for fouling by inorganic salts, in service a dilute acid wash is carried out periodically on the resin to unblock resin pores."

GENERALTHE coal deposit, where it is being worked, consists of a bed of brown coal varying in thickness from 120 ft. to 200 ft., covered by an overburden of clay, drift, loam, etc., of a thickness of 22 ft. to 40 ft., and averaging 28 ft.The overburden is first entirely removed from the coal, and then the coal is excavated by. large revolving shovels which work at the bottom of the hole or open cut in the coal and deliver it in shovel bucketfuls to the transport system. The shovels owned by the Commission and available for this coal excavation are two Bucyrus steam revolving shovels, one being type 150B, weighing 150 tons, having a 21-cub. yd. bucket, and capable of digging a 47-ft. face; and the other being type 175B, weighing200 tons, having a 31-cub. yd. bucket, and capable of digging a 61-ft. face.In addition to these two steam shovels, the Commission has recently obtained a No. 250 Ruston electric revolving shovel weighing 340 tons, and having a bucket of 10 cub. yd. capacity, and capable of digging a 75-ft. face. When this electric shovel has been erected it will replace the steam shovels on the coal excavation, and the permanent transport system has been designed to take delivery of the coal from its bucket.The duty to be performed by the transport system is to take the coal from the shovels, elevate it out of the open cut, transport it to the screening house, deliver it iuto the hoppers at the top of this building, then to take the coal after it has passed over the screens and distribute the required grades to the power house and to the briquetting plant.

The Committee's proposed standards establish definitions and guidelines for the reporting of Exploration Information, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves in Canada and are identified as the "CIM Standards" and referred to as such hereafter in this document. To provide additional clarification to Qualified Persons (QPs), guidelines have been included with the respective definitions. The CIM Standards are applicable to all minerals including industrial minerals, diamonds and other gemstones. Reserve definitions for bitumen, natural gas and oil are not included in these Standards. The CIM Standards are not intended to cover mineral inventory estimates that will be reported to government agencies.

The Tecnored process is a new ironmaking technology, developed on a unique approach that combined empirical and theoretical knowledge backed by extensive tests carried out in a dedicated pilot-plant and with close support of universities and research centers. Campaigns in the pilot-plant focused on operate different reactors of different sizes, including a full size slice of the industrial furnace. This approach provided actual conditions to develop the main features of the process such as the internal dimensions, raceway pattern, thermal and gaseous profiles, etc, besides provide reliable data to feed and calibrate a specific mathematical process modeling. This paper presents the first computer model used by the Tecnored technical staff, focusing the behavior of a self reducing agglomerate in the upper shaft of the furnace (zone of solid state reduction). Some results of this model are given and discussed.

The sinking and lining of a large mine shaft with 8.0 m i.d. and 1,133 m total depth is described in detail. The ground freezing method was applied to safely sink the shaft through unstable, waterbearing strata. Following a brief introduction to the geological and hydrological conditions and the owner's shaft requirements, is the general technical concept to sink and line the shaft. Particular emphasis is put on the lining system which has to provide stability and absolute watertightness for the lifetime of the shaft, even though mining takes place in its immediate proximity. Machinery and equipment used to execute the work are mentioned and commented. Furthermore, the excavation and lining of the large filling stations using rock anchors and shotcrete are described. Details on performance rates are given.

The fatigue behavior of AM60 high pressure die casting magnesium alloys was studied in a straincontrolled manner. The fatigue test was interrupted every 2,000 cycles for X-ray tomography scanning. The specimen was removed to be scanned on a desktop micro-CT system. The value of using X-ray tomography in a fatigue properties study was assessed with respect to porosity, cracks and fracture surfaces. The 3D analysis and model results showed porosity could be well measured and modelled in 3D. Defects bands are made of pores under 50 µm in volume-equivalent sphere diameter. Larger pores are randomly distributed in the region between two defect bands. Observation of cracks by X-ray tomography occurs in three ways such that the 3D model gives the best illustration of crack-porosity interaction while the other two methods have better detectability on crack initiation and crack tip observation. X-ray tomography is also of value in failure analysis on fracture surfaces. By summarizing X-ray tomography data during fatigue testing and observing fracture surfaces on a 3D model, a better understanding on the crack initiation, crack-porosity interaction and the morphology of fracture surface is achieved.

In the present study, 1.1 volume percent of nano size copper was incorporated into pure tin using hybrid microwave sintering assisted powder metallurgy route. Microwave sintered samples were extruded both at room temperature and at 230 °C. Microstructural characterization studies were conducted on the extruded samples to investigate the distribution characteristics of secondary phase and grain morphology. Room temperature tensile test results revealed that hot extruded Sn-Cu samples exhibited higher strengths (~ 41%, in case of 0.2% yield strength and ~ 38%, in case of ultimate tensile strength) and ductility (~ 15%) when compared to room temperature extruded samples. On the contrary, the tensile properties of pure tin remained independent of extrusion temperature. An attempt is made in this study to correlate the effect of extrusion temperature on the microstructural evolution and tensile properties of Sn-Cu solder.

The success of any blast is dependent on the accuracy of the blast design and field controls placed at the shot location. The procedure by which the data is collected and analyzed is paramount to accomplishing the anticipated blast results. lf the geometry of the blast is not measured correctly, then the results will not meet expectations. Measuring the geometry and compensating for bole hole deviations is crucial not only to the lnitlal blast but also for any consecutive blasts. Excessive bore hole deviation can cancel any new technology in use. However the instruments and skills required solving this Issue are readily available.

The paper show how the inclusion of the uncertainty of the geology of the orebody into the mine planning and design process can be of great help, for the mine planner, in both assessing and quantifying the existing risk in the key project indicators such as DCF, and ore tonnage. This is achieved by using conditional simulation and Monte Carlo techniques which provide equally probable models of the original orebody model of the deposit. In this fashion, it is possible to assess the sensitivity of the pit design and related long-term production scheduling (cutbacks) to grade uncertainty.

New detailed mapping, micropalaeont- ology and isotopic dating have been successful in revising the stratigraphy of Woodlark Island. All Middle to Late Miocene intrusives and volcanic rocks have been assigned to the Okiduse Volcanics. In addition, the results demonstrate that the Tabukui beds and Wonai Hill beds (N9, late Early Miocene to earliest Middle Miocene) are a single unit. Similarly, the Nasai and Suloga Limestones are confirmed as a single stratigraphic unit as they yield similar foraminiferal ages (upper Te, Early Miocene), and both occur in the same stratigraphic position unconformably overlying basement Loluai Volcanics. Radiocarbon dating suggests a latest Pleistocene age for the upper Kiriwina Formation. Extensive Quaternary cover and low relief prevents detailed structural airphoto interpretation. In general, the structure is simple with all units on Woodlark dipping to the northwest a_4 exhibiting prominent local block faulting.

Judicious placement of a range of geotechnical instruments was employed at the Tasmania gold mine, Beaconsfield, Tasmania, as a key strategy in the monitoring of rock mass conditions over the past four years. The range of instruments employed included vibrating wire stress-meters and hollow inclusion cells to monitor changing stress conditions, resistance wire and multipoint borehole extensometers to monitor the impact of stress changes on the integrity of the rock mass, and instrumented cable bolts and threadbar bolts to monitor the static and dynamic impact of rock mass changes on the installed ground control system. Initially the monitoring was of a qualitative nature, monitoring change from the time of installation. The value of the output was considerable when considered in relation to the ongoing seismic record which was also being monitored. It was clear from the seismic record and the monitoring results that stope blasting was the primary trigger for changing rock mass conditions. However, it was unclear how well observed behaviour was reflecting conditions anticipated by elastic numerical modelling. The latter had predicted significant stress increase in the near field of man-access footwall development. Qualitative monitoring and visual inspection did not support the modelling prediction, and this led to a program of quantitative measurement being undertaken. Measurement of the absolute stress condition in the backs of footwall development immediately adjacent to monitoring hollow inclusion cells provided the benchmark for tracking quantitative stress change. The program provided insight into the evolution of principal stress field magnitude and orientation in relation to rock mass change observed with extensometers and instrumented ground control elements, as well as providing a degree of calibration between the elastic numerical modelling and the virgin stress field. Calibrated monitoring data has also provided a useful benchmark for finite element modelling which is to be used for future mine-wide design.

The study involved two projects that will produce copper concentrate and may have their operations integrated. Transport by trucks, conveyor belt, and the equipment called RopeCon were evaluated as options for the ore transport between the sites. A rainforest stretch, that Vale S.A. demands to preserve, is situated between the projects. It was suggested to further review RopeCon because it presents minimal interactions with the environment. To design the preliminary system layout, a research was done on the rainforest cover height data, but the information found was scarce and imprecise. For preserving the local forest, the use of this data would conduct to the oversizing of RopeCon towers and, consequently, overestimation of its costs. For the acquisition of reliable information, a method was developed using local data acquired through airborne laser survey. The volume between the digital surface and terrain models was calculated to generate a surface representing the forest cover height. It was revealed, by plotting the points obtained from this surface, that 85% of the vegetation is below 25 m. This height is suggested to review the preliminary project with a more accurate design of the equipment towers, thus reducing its costs estimates. The method permits the precise location of the large trees, making easier to find a pathway, for linear-shaped facilities, that would minimize the creation of vegetation-free zones as a measure to protect equipments against falling trees and forest fires. The rapid rise of industrial Los Angeles to international prominence has been accompanied by the natural corollary - a record influx of population - together with greatly increased production and fabrication of steel and nonferrous and light metals; industrial mineral processing; and high consumption of fuel oil, gasoline, and chemicals. These have resulted in the release of hundreds of tons of metallurgical and mineral dusts, fumes, and gases into the atmosphere daily. Los Angeles County, intrinsically, is no worse than other industrial centers in respect to the generation of atmospheric contamination. It is, in fact, more fortunate in that no coal is used, and it has no great primary metallurgical industries comparable to those of Chicago and Pittsburgh. Meteorologic and topographic peculiarities of the area, however, which result in poor drainage of the polluted air away from the Los Angeles Basin, serve periodically to greatly increase the intensity and frequency of industrial smog visitations. This combination of intense industrialization, population influx, climate, and topography has made mandatory control of air pollution necessary. The nonferrous pyrometallurgical industry of Los Angeles has three rather unusual characteristics that contribute to its difficulties in developing suitable fume control: It consists of a multiplicity of relatively small establishments subject to wide Variations in products and operating schedules; operations are largely of the secondary or reclaiming nature and, therefore, often work dirty scrap metals; and, unfortunately, much of the industry is concentrated, to a considerable extent, near the center of the city. A difficulty inherent in most nonferrous foundries, including the many brass-works melting alloys containing zinc, is the high volatility of zinc and the extremely small mean particle size of the resulting zinc oxide fume.
