"The Quintette coal property lies in the Rocky Mountain foothills of northeastern British Columbia (see Figure 1). Quintette and the adjacent Bullmoose property of Teck Corporation are soon to become the first commercial coal mines in the Peace River Coal Field, which is estir1ated to contain 10 billion tonnes of metallurgical coal reserves.Denison Mines Limited acquired the original Quintette coal licenses in 1969 and 1970. Exploration began soon after and the first feasibility study was conducted in 1975. Denison devoted the following six years to extensive planning and feasibility studies of the project. During this period, the provincial and federal governments also undertook studies to assess infrastructure requirements and economic viability of development in this part of the province. Many of the proposed mine sites such as Bullmoose and Quintette were at least 100 to 150 kilometres from the towns of Chetwynd and Dawson Creek, the nearest centres serviced by good highways and a railroad, and a complete network of services would have to be provided if such mines were to be developed. The overall project became known as the North East Coal Development.Concurrently with the feasibility studies, numerous technical and sales missions to Japan were made by representatives of Canadian industry and government, culminating in January 1981 with agreements for Quintette Coal Limited and Teck Corporation to supply a total of 115 million tonnes 8 million tonnes per year for 15 years of primarily metallurgical coal to the Japanese Steel Industry."

Across the life-of-mine, water is both an essential commodity to mining, and one of the most significant hazards. In Australia, a land of drought and floods, availability of water is a critical strategic risk for mine sites and neighbouring stakeholders, with both insufficient water leading to curtailed operations and contested space, and extreme water closing operations through flooding of mine sites, transportation infrastructure and unplanned regulatory restrictions. In addition to these major strategic risks, water must be addressed in operational risk management activities in many different ways.This paper develops a set of categories for classification of water risks based on academic papers from the water in mining literature. These categories are applied to media content analysis of articles in International Longwall News (ILN) (an online coal industry news site) obtained with the search terms ‘water’, ‘rain’ and ‘flood’. Identified risks are discussed within the context of the life-of-mine. The paper uses these same categories to analyse the treatment of water risks in a new coal industry risk management body of knowledge called RISKGATE (http://www.riskgate.org, Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre, The University of Queensland). The discussion of water risks in both INL and RISKGATE is compared and contrasted to pinpoint opportunities (and a roadmap) for further development of a specific RISKGATE water module for site-based operations. The waste rock and tailings backfill into the mined-out areas are the most effective method for solving the environmental pollution and surface disasters for nonferrous metals mines. In practice, the success and availability of backfill operations are dependent on the slurry fluidity and the strength properties of cement backfill. The transport of the slurry through the pipeline to the designated backfilling area relies on its eximious flow properties, while the appropriate strength of the filling body ensures the safe operation of the stope. In this paper, the effects of cement and aggregate types on the slurry fluidity and strength characteristics of cemented backfill are studied in detail, which are often ignored in other pieces of literature. Diffusivity is used as an indicator to evaluate the slurry fluidity. Various slurries whose concentrations ranging from 70%, 73%, 75%, 78%, and 80% are made with different aggregate ratios and cement-sand ratios are tested. It has been shown that slurry fluidity is inversely related to its concentration, but 78% is the “stopping point” for the deterioration of fluidity. The addition of rod-milled sand improves or worsens the cemented backfill (CB) strength depending on the amount of rob-milled sand. The uniaxial compression experiment results on 216 CB specimens produced by different combinations of influencing variables showed that CB specimens made from cement with superior mechanical properties have a higher uniaxial compressive strength (σucs). It has been also found that the effect of aggregate ratio on the CB strength is not singular, but works in conjunction with the curing time and the cement-sand ratio. The longer the curing time and the higher the cement content, the higher the CB’s σucs. To avoid the time-consuming and costly problem of obtaining the strength of the CB from indoor experiments, an SVR model capable of predicting the uniaxial compression strength of CB specimens is proposed, which is optimized by genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The results of the three performance indexes (MAPE, MSE, and R2) show the superior performance of the GA-SVR and PSO-SVR models and the agreement of the predicted results with the experimental results, which indicate that these two models can accurately predict the σucs of CB.

Four companies ? H.C. Spinks Clay Co., Inc., Imerys, Old Hickory Clay Co., and Unimin Corp. ? mined ball clay in four states in 2013. On the basis of preliminary data, production was 1 Mt (1.1 million st) with an estimated value of $47 million. Production increased by 3 percent in tonnage from 973 kt (1.1 million st) with a value of $45.1 million in 2012. Tennessee was the leading producer accounting for 64 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 67 percent of total ball clay production was airfloat, 22 percent was crude or shredded and 11 percent was water-slurried.

This study aimed to produce magnesium oxide (MgO) particles with different properties from dolomite ore using an experimental procedure comprising four stages: sample preparation (S1), HCl leaching (S2), precipitation (S3), and calcination (S4). Three different base sources (NaOH, KOH, and NH4OH) were used as precipitant in the third stage to obtain magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] from a leachate solution, which was obtained in the second stage. Next, Mg(OH)2 particles generated by different alkali sources were calcined at various temperatures from 600–1000 °C for different durations (1–5 h). The effect of these base types on the properties of each product was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and wet chemical analyses. The experimental results indicated that each product was identified as periclase (MgO) mineral, which was produced with a specific surface area (SSA) of 4.49–44.54 m2 /g depending on the production conditions. The surface roughness of the MgO particles increased with increasing calcination temperature. SEM analyses showed that MgO particles produced at a temperature of 600 or 800 °C were amorphous, indicating that the process was not influenced by the base type, but MgO crystals were smooth when the calcination temperature was 1000 °C. Finally, it was determined from all experimental findings that MgO particles produced via the addition of NaOH have superior properties (such as higher SSA and lower surface roughness) compared with MgO particles produced with KOH or NH4OH as the alkali source. These properties led to great improvement of its usability in industry.

Everyone has a role in site safety, even consultants. This paper presents a summary of how a geotechnical and environmental consulting firm, with field staff on construction and subsurface explorations sites, engaged their staff and leveraged relationships with contractors to assess the construction related risks to which its staff members are exposed. These findings were then integrated into their technical training materials for both new staff and those needing a refresher, so that safety is discussed at the same time as the technical work and not treated as a separate topic. The paper outlines the process of identifying and evaluating the construction related risks that staff members face and presents examples of how the consultant can engage contractors in the process. By doing this, knowledge can be shared and there is a better mutual understanding of the risks associated with common construction and exploration related field tasks. The work resulted in an increase in staff engagement in safety, a better understanding of the true risks that staff face in the field, better relationships with contractors, and lower safety metrics. HISTORY At Haley & Aldrich, Inc., we renewed our safety journey in May 2012. Like many others, we had concerns over injuries our staff experienced in the three previous years, and a potentially significant utility strike we experienced while excavating a trench. In 2009, 2010 and 2011 we experienced an increase in recordable injuries, including two significant injuries, which caused our Experience Modification Rate (EMR) (see note below), Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR), and Days Away-Restricted, and Transferred Rate (DART) to rise significantly. See Fig. 1 for details. This caused us to step back and review our approach to safety, and our “safety culture”. The rise in reportable incidents and injuries also corresponded to the beginning of a growth period for the company.

Surface coal mining in West Virginia has supplied energy to the eastern coast of the United States for over a century. The coal mining industry has been forced to adapt as societal demands regarding health, safety, and environmental impacts have changed with time. More recent pressure has called for another iteration of change: long-term post-mining sustainability. The research presented in this paper investigates one potential solution?or component of a solution?to improve mining sustainability in Appalachia: post-mining wind power. This paper intends to demonstrate and explain the feasibility of synergistic mine closure and wind development. Wind conditions at three reclaimed mine sites in West Virginia were monitored in order to develop representative case studies for post-mining wind power. This paper contains a summary of the literature consulted to plan the site assessments, the methodology employed to execute them, the analysis steps undertaken to derive conclusions, and a discussion of all findings. This research has found that significant cost savings can be yielded from synergistic mine closure and wind development, as compared to greenfield wind development. Though wind conditions themselves remain the primary driver for site feasibility, post-mining wind power is a practice with significant promise for improving project economics, contributing to renewable energy development, enhancing company-community relations, providing local employment opportunities, and exemplifying sustainable business practices in Appalachia.

BHP Billiton?s Cannington facility is a mining and minerals processing plant near Mt. Isa in Central Queensland, Australia, producing silver, lead and zinc. Mine ore is processed in a concentrator, which consists of grinding, flotation, thickening and filtration. Grinding is carried out in a fully autogenous (AG) mill. The mill operates in closed circuit with a pebble crusher. Throughput is approximately 380 tph. Cyclone overflow from the grinding circuit is fed into a flotation circuit for the recovery of lead, zinc and silver. Two concentrates are produced (lead and zinc), which are then thickened and filtered. The filtered concentrate is transported by road to a rail receiving station. From here the concentrate is railed to port in Townsville for shipment to the smelter. Matrikon and Engineers at BHP Billiton?s Cannington Mine have used ProcessACT to develop a flexible, nonlinear dynamic simulator for the grinding circuit to further enhance process understanding, as well to investigate various optimization strategies. An online charge volume estimator was also developed for the AG mill to aid in the understanding of overload conditions, which for the previous two months had been the primary contributor to downtime. The models were developed using a combination of first-principles modeling along with input-output dynamic responses. Examples of models used include: Morrell ?C? model for power and charge shoulder/toe angle prediction; Whiten?s mixing model for breakage and hold-up; Nageswararao cyclone model for predicting cut size; slurry recovery and water recovery. The composite model simulates system dynamics starting from the stockpile reclaim system and finishing at the feed for the flotation process. The objective was to provide a tool that assisted Cannington in understanding their Grinding Circuit and allowed them to develop and evaluate circuit optimization strategies. BHP Billiton Cannington Mine is now considering development of a Grinding Circuit Optimizer utilizing the models developed for the simulator.

"Lately, the development work in closed circuit grinding has mainly been focused on mills and on different types of instrumentation, mathematical models and automation in spite of the fact that the poor efficiency of the classifier is well known. It has also been proven by several investigations that by improving the sharpness of classifier separation, remarkable technical and economical advantages can be achieved. Some attempts to improve the performance of the most common classifier, hydrocyclone, have been made, among them injection of wash water above the spigot cyclone and retreatment of either or both of the products of the primary classifier. No method has been successful enough to achieve general adoption in the industry. The purpose of this paper is to introduce some industrial results achieved by two-stage classification where the coarse product of the turbulent-flow classifier, hydrocyclone, is cleaned in a laminar-flow cone classifier.The main target of the adoption of the two-stage classification circuit it naturally to improve the sharpness of size separation. This again leads to the following advantages in the grinding process:- lower circulating load and increased capacity- lower energy consumptionnarrower size distribution in the fine product- less overgrinding and less slimes- reduced specific surface areaThese improvements, no doubt, reflect on the subsequent concentrating process in the following aspects:the rate of flotation is improved, less reagents and energy is neededthe recovery and grade of valuable minerals in concentrates is improved- savings in dewatering can be expected- less fines in tailings improve the conditions for water recirculation."

Hydrochem Developments Ltd. has developed and put into full scale operation a novel type of vertical flotation column incorporating a multiplicity of mechanically agitated stages. Characteristics of this flotation column include a low height to diameter ratio, high upgrading factors and the possibility of modifying geometry and operation to specific flotation requirements. A commercial unit is currently handling up to 100 tpd rougher concentrate at Dickenson Mines Limited, Balmertown, Ontario. Design parameters and plant performance will be discussed.

Molybdenite is the world’s principal source of rhenium (Re), a critical element in multiple high-tech applications. However, the Re contents in molybdenite vary by orders of magnitude on scales ranging from single grains to whole deposits. In order to better understand the systematics of this variation and what geochemical factors control molybdenite Re concentration, and hence overall Re resources, we examine global patterns in molybdenite Re contents through a compilation of > 3000 measurements of Re in molybdenite from > 700 mainly ore-bearing moderate- to high-temperature hydrothermal systems of different types. Our results are similar to but expand on those of earlier studies. Rhenium concentration in molybdenite has a lognormal distribution and varies systematically with type of geologic system, intrusive lithology, and Mo grade. The lowest-Re molybdenite occurs in greisens (geometric mean 1 ppm ± a multiplicative standard deviation of 9), quartz vein-hosted W-Sn deposits (2 ± 5 ppm), unmineralized granites and granodiorites (12 ± 8 ppm), intrusion-related deposits (24 ± 8 ppm), and porphyry W-Sn deposits (16 ± 11 ppm). Rhenium is most enriched in molybdenites from volcanic sublimates (23,800 ± 5 ppm), with skarn Fe and Au (560 ± 5 ppm and 540 ± 3 ppm respectively) and porphyry Cu and Cu-Au deposits next (470 ± 4 and 430 ± 7 ppm respectively). Among porphyries, skarns, and quartz vein-hosted deposits, Re is most highly concentrated in molybdenites from Cu and Au systems and its concentration decreases systematically through Cu-Mo, Mo, Sn, and W deposits. In nearly all cases, molybdenites from systems associated with intermediate igneous rocks contain more Re than molybdenites from systems of the same type with more felsic rock associations. The disparity between Re contents of molybdenite in felsic and intermediate systems is largest for porphyries, quartz vein-hosted, and skarn deposits and is near zero for subeconomic or barren granite and granodiorite Mo systems; felsic intrusion-related deposits have slightly higher molybdenite Re than their equivalents associated with intermediate intrusions. In most systems, molybdenite Re content does not correlate with metal grade, but may have an inverse correlation with Au grade in intrusion-related deposits (based on a small number of data points) and does exhibit a strong inverse correlation with deposit Mo grade. Dilution of Re through larger amounts (higher deposit grades) of molybdenite explains about 40% of this correlation, but the relative enrichment of Re in molybdenite from low-Mo deposits must also reflect some selective enrichment of Re/Mo in porphyry Cu systems compared to porphyry Mo systems. We found no evidence for secular increase or other systematic temporal variation in molybdenite Re content. The data regarding the use of molybdenite Re content as a proxy for mantle influence are ambiguous. Nearly all observed empirical correlations can be traced back to differences in redox state and sulfide concentration, the two geochemical factors identified here and by previous experimental work as the controlling influences on Re mobility under hydrothermal conditions. Hydrothermal systems with reducing conditions (W- and Sn-rich) tend to have low molybdenite Re even though compiled whole-rock data indicate that their source rocks have as much or more Re as those of more oxidized systems (e.g., Cu-rich). Vapor-phase exsolution, crustal assimilation, and mixing with external fluids may all enrich molybdenite Re concentrations in individual deposits and deposit types, but their extent and importance in overall hydrothermal concentration of Re is uncertain. Thus, it appears that the available molybdenite Re resource in an ore deposit largely depends on how the deposit’s redox and sulfidation conditions have varied over time and space during the timespan of hydrothermal activity. Oxidized, high-sulfide conditions tend to concentrate Re in molybdenite, whereas reducing conditions tend to leave Re dispersed at low concentrations in the bulk rock.

The Minera Yanacocha operation consists of several heaps interconnected with ponds and gold recovery plants and presents various operating challenges. A comprehensive process model has been developed in order to better understand the effects of certain operating parameters and inventory issues. An integral component of the process water/mass balance is a model of each heap that describes heap behavior based on the individual characteristics of the heap. The heap models are linked to a mass balancing program in order to track flows and concentrations throughout the circuit. A case study of the process heap model is presented for the La Quinua heap, including results for the normal base line operation and several operational problems such as loss of solution flow to the heap (i.e., pump failure), increased flow to a section of the heap (i.e., pond volume control), effect of significant rain events, and impact of a change in material properties (i.e., change in ore type). The impact on heap operating efficiency is discussed with regard to effects on recovery and gold solution grades.

T HIS has been a most momentous year in the annals of the Institute. We have been in the midst of a situation which, were it not for the convulsions of social unrest with which life is surrounded on every side, would have attracted the attention of the world at large. I do not refer to the desperate campaign for new members. That has gone on much as usual except that, this being leap year, the annual proposal to the M. & M. Society has been omitted. Nor do I refer to the desperate situation which we found in other directions, the spread of Bolshevism, the burning of the Engineers' Club, the fact that the selling of copper appears to have become one of the lost arts. No, I speak of the great question which has to be. settled once and for all, as to whether this great Institute should adopt simplified spelling. The whole trouble started in the ranks of the California Hysterical Society. It appears, while most of the San Francisco members can read and write, several of them cannot spell. It also appears that the Secretary, in editing the Transactions, has perhaps made just a little bit too much of a point of employing the correct Stoughton idiom. At any rate, the rebels filed an amendment to the constitution, and the stage was set for civil war, with perhaps more stress on war than on civil.

Processos de fundição de ligas de alumínio com altos teores de Mg são um desafio da indústria, uma vez que diferentes taxas de resfriamento ocorrem em geometrias diversas. Este trabalho tem como objetivo caracterizar a liga de alumínio AA5052 com variações em teores de Mg por meio de experimentos de solidificação direcional transitória, e compreender seus efeitos com relação a evolução de parâmetros térmicos, microestruturais, e propriedade mecânica. As leis experimentais de evolução do espaçamento dendrítico primário (?1) com relação a taxa de resfriamento resultam em: ?_1=640 ?T ?_L?^(-1/4) para a liga 5052 com 2,4%Mg e ?_1=300 ?T ?_L?^(-1/4) para a liga com 3,2%Mg. As leis de crescimento de espaçamento dendrítico secundário (?2) com relação a velocidade de solidificação resultaram em: ?_2=27 ?V_L?^(-1,1) para a liga 5052 com 2,4%Mg e ?_2=15 ?V_L?^(-1,1) para as ligas com 2,6%Mg e 3,2%Mg. Maiores teores de Mg na liga AA5052 proporcionaram uma expressiva redução no valor de ?2 para uma determinada VL. A evolução da dureza mostrou-se diretamente relacionada ao tamanho e a distribuição dos intermetálicos presentes, sendo ?2 o fator predominante neste controle.

To sustain the circular economy, defence applications, and other renewable technologies, recycling rare earth elements (REEs) and other critical elements from their secondary resources is important. This cause has resulted in rigorous research and development for viable extraction and separation of REEs. Previously, Sm-Co recycling has been done with technologies, which fall under the categories of pyrometallurgy, physical separation, and hydrometallurgy. All these methods have limitations associated with energy, cost, and environment. Reportedly, the chemical leaching technology has successfully recovered and separated Sm-Co. Still, it has limitations associated with slow mass transfer and leaching kinetics, and there is a need to intensify the process to make it time efficient. This approach has also adversely impacted the environment by an extensive use of toxic, corrosive, non-selective, and expensive reagents. In this research study, chemical leaching of Sm-Co was performed using this new class of solvents, Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs), which fall under the category of ion metallurgy. Four different DESs were used, proven to be green, non-toxic, biodegradable, cheap, and selective for cobalt over samarium by 82% leaching conversion. To improve the slow mass transfer and leaching time, this new technology of resonant vibratory mixing (RVM) was also tested. RVM intensifies mixing by establishing near instantaneous, low energy mixing conditions through resonance. It has been shown to improve the adsorption kinetics and was tested for the leaching kinetics. Four combinations of DESs were prepared, which are made up of two quaternary salts: Choline Chloride and Tetra Butyl Ammonium Chloride, and three organic compounds: Oxalic Acid, Urea, and Ethylene Glycol. These combinations were used for chemical leaching of Sm-Co with leaching factors of time, temperature, and type of DESs. After leaching, the samples were tested with and without resonant vibratory mixing with conditions of time, intensity (%), and type of DESs. Samples were analysed with Induced Coupled Plasma - Optical Spectroscopy (ICP - OES). Future work will involve a life-cycle assessment to assess the RVM technology with other conventional mixers, and an extensive study of DES properties to improve selective leaching.

The assessment of landslide instability and risk has become a topic of major interest for both geoscientists and engineering professionals as well as for local communities and administrations in many parts of the world. In this paper, based on a new developed Geographic Information Systems (GIS) grid-based 3D deterministic model and taken the slope unit as the study object, the landslide hazard is mapped by the index of the 3D safety factor. Assuming the initial slip as the lower part of an ellipsoid, the 3D critical slip surface in the 3D slope stability analysis is obtained by means of a minimization of the 3D safety factor using the Monte Carlo random simulation. The failure probability of the landslide is calculated by an approximate method in which the distributions of f,c and the 3D safety factor are assumed to be in normal distributions. The assessment of the earthquake triggered landslide hazard is done by the dynamic displacement analysis using the index of the Newmark displacement. All the calculations are implemented by a computational system call 3DSLOPEGIS in that a GIS component is used for fulfilling the GIS spatial analysis function. Besides the results of 3D safety factor and probability, the possible landslide body and boundary can be three-dimensionally quantitatively identified. Dans cette étude, basé sur un modèle de maillage 3D et une approche déterniniste couplée au Système d'Information Géographique (SIG), étudiant la stabilité des versants , le lieu d'étude à risque est maillé suivant le facteur de sécurité calculé en 3D. En supposant que le glissement initial soit la partie inférieure d'un élipsoïde, l'analyse de stabilité pour le glissement critique 3D d'un versant 3D est obtenu grace à une minimisation du facteur de sécurité en 3D utilisant la méthode de simulation aléatoire de Monte Carlo. La probabilité d'un glissement de terrain est calculée par une méthode approximative, supposant la distribution de c, f et du facteur de sécurité 3D normale. L'estimation d'un risque de glissement de terrain causé par un tremblement de terre est faite grace à une analyse du déplacement dynamique suivant l'index de Newmark. Tous les calculs sont effectués par le biais d'un système de calcul appellé 3DSLOPEGIS dans lequel te GIS est utilisé pour gérer l'analyse spatiale. En plus de cela, les résultats du coefficient de sécurité en 3D, des probabilités, le terrain susceptible de glisser, et ses limites, peuvent être quantitativement évalués en trois dimensions. Die Bewertung von Erdrutsch-Instabilität und risiko sind zu einem Thema von großen Interesse für sowohl Geowissenschaftlern und Ingenieuren als auch von Gemeinden und Verwaltungen in vielen Teilen der Welt geworden. In dieser Arbeit, basierend auf einem neu entwickelten Geografische Informationssysteme (GIS) gitterbasierten 3D deterministischen Modell und mit der Böschung als Untersuchungsobjekt wird die Erdrutschgefahr durch den Index des 3D-Sicherheitsfaktors kartografiert. Unter der Annahme, dass der erste Rutsch der untere Teil eines Ellipsoiden ist, wird die 3D kritische Schlupfoberfläche in der 3D-Böschungsstabilitätsanalyse mit einer Minimierung des 3D-Sicherheitsfaktors mit der Monte Carlo Zufallssimulation erhalten. Die Fehlerwahrscheinlichkeit des Erdrutschs wird mit einer Annäherungsmethode berechnet, bei der die Verteilungen von f,c und dem 3D-Sicherheitsfaktor als innerhalb normaler Verteilungen angenommen werden. Die Beurteilung der Erdbeben-ausgelösten Erdrutschgefahr wird mit der dynamischen Verdrängungsanalyse mit dem Index der Newmark-Verdrängung gearbeitet. Alle Berechnungen werden mit einem Berechnungssystem mit der Bezeichnung 3DSLOPEGIS ausgeführt, bei dem eine GIS-Komponente zum Erfüllen der GIS räumlichen Analysefunktion verwendet wird. Neben der Ergebnissen des 3D-Sicherheitsfaktors und der Wahrscheinlichkeit kann der mögliche Erdrutschkörper und der Umfang dreidimensional quantitativ identifiziert werden.

A eficiência operacional é um fator essencial para garantir a competitividade das empresas. O desafio é estudar os processos de forma a aumentar a sua produtividade sem necessidade de investimento, gerando valor as empresas. O equipamento estudado, a Linha de Inspeção é o gargalo na produção limitando a geração de produtos em volume ou qualidade. As etapas eleitas para estudo foram os setup’s das atividades de inicio (encaixe) e final (desencaixe) do processo, atividades não automatizadas, com maior intervenção humana que sofrem interferência direta dos tempos e métodos praticados pelos operadores. Utilizando o método dedutivo, tendo como ferramenta de apoio, a pesquisa bibliográfica para fundamentação teórica e realizadas observações de campo, determinou-se os melhores tempos para realização das atividades visando a sua otimização. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo modificar o método operacional nesta Linha de Inspeção visando o aumento da eficiência produtiva, aumentando a geração dos laminados à frio. O trabalho comprovou que a mudança do modo operacional proporciona um incremento de 8% na produção (1.800t/mes).

At the Armatcuk mine in Turkey, various modifications of sublevel methods have been tried during the last decade in an effort to eliminate gob fires, dangers from roof falls, and surface subsidence, and also to increase extraction efficiency. From the experience thus gained, it was decided that the most likely system to give maximum benefits, considering the existing geological conditions and coa1-seam characteristics, was hydraulic stowing. This paper examines trends in the working techniques of hydraulic stowing and discusses the favorable results and technical problems that the method produced at Armutcuk. The Armutcuk mine, a subsidiary of Eregli Coal Mines (EKI), produces 1300 tons of run-of-mine coal daily from thick (about 10-90 ft) and highly dipping (about 50-90°) coal seams. The coal is highly volatile with good coking properties that make it highly suitable for industrial use. Most of this coal is used in the iron and steel industry at Eregli on the Black Sea coast. Complete recovery of the coal is of vital importance to industrial development and progress. Initial coal extraction was carried out by means of a sublevel mining system modified to accommodate local geological conditions and coal seam characteristics. This method is similar to that employed in metalliferous mines. Several problems arose from the application of the method, one of them being the prevalence of gob fires which caused periodic shutdowns in some sections. To achieve maximum coal extraction with minimum dilution, to eliminate gob fires and surface subsidence, and to reduce fatal accident rates, a decision was taken to change from this method to a hydraulic stowing system. The pres- ence of large deposits of conglomerate and sandstone on the surface contributed to the decision to employ this new method. Although hydraulic stowing practices have been carried out in America and Germany, Upper Silesia may, so far as coal is concerned, be considered the birthplace of the method. Here the process was adapted to thick coal seams on a large scale to reduce dangers from gob fires and damage from surface subsidence. Today, the mining system is not only widely used in the coal mines of France, the Saar, India and Poland, but has also been successfully applied to the iron ore and potassium salt mines in Russia and Germany. LOCATION AND HISTORY The Kandilli-Armutcuk coal field, the most western outcrop of the North Anatolian coal basin, extends for five miles along the Black Sea coast (Fig. 1). The Armutcuk Mine is situated on the southern boundary of the coal field about 40 miles from Zonguldak and about 12 miles from Eregli. The history of coal mining in the North Anatolian coal basin goes back more than a century. Mining commenced on a small scale in the Kandilli-Armutcuk coal field in the late 1880's, and from this time until nationalization in 1940 the mines were operated by private Turkish and foreign interests. In 1940, Eregli Coal Mines was established to takeover the management of these enterprises. The Armutcuk Mine was developed for the first time in the mid-1940's. Since then it has been in continuous production and it now produces an annual 440,000-ton run-of-mine output from which 320.000 tons of salable coal is obtained. MINE GEOLOGY The carboniferous inlier of the Kandilli-Armutcuk coal field crops out over an area about three miles long and one mile wide. The major part of the inlier consists of the Namurian formation with only a relatively small area of Westfalian-A visible on the surface (Fig. 2). A major focus of ground control research presently being conducted by the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to incorporate weak rock masses (such as are associated with operations in the Carlin Trend in Nevada) into existing design relationships. The original database that led to most of the empirical design relationships presently employed in hard-rock mining was derived from fair-to-good-quality rock. In this study, the relationship between weak rock quality and opening design (nonentry/entry methods) is being investigated. The common factor in all mines is a weak back or wall. This work attempts to provide tools that will enable a mine operator to make economic decisions that will also ensure a safe working environment.
