Arsenic sulfide [orpiment, realgar, amorphous AsS and As2S3] oxidation rates were measured in mixed flow reactors at pH~2 and temperature of 25-30oC. The measured oxidation rates for arsenic sulfide solids by dissolved oxygen are in the range of 10-11 to 10-10 mole m-2 s-1 after being normalized to final surface area. The order of arsenic sulfide oxidation rates decreases at pH~2 from amorphous AsS > realgar > orpiment > amorphous As2S3. In comparison to pyrite, arsenic sulfide oxidation rates are approximately 1.5 to 15 times slower than pyrite oxidation rates at pH~2.

THIS paper covers, besides laboratory work, a study of actual operation at the Washoe Smelter over a considerable period of time, together with the results of a visit to the Midvale plant of the United States Smelting- & Refining Co., near Salt Lake. For the latter privilege, as well as permission to publish the resulting data herein given, I am indebted to George W. Heintz, General Manager of the Midvale plant, and here take pleasure in. expressing my appreciation for the many courtesies extended to me by Mr. Heintz and members of the technical staff at the smelter. Almost all of the world's supply of arsenic is recovered as a by-product in the smelting of other metals. It is seen on the market in various forms, the most common being arsenic trioxide, the ? white arsenic " of commerce, which is sold as a heavy white powder, or in white, glassy, translucent masses. The trioxide is used in the manufacture of pigment, glass, and insecticides. About 50 per cent. of the domestic consumption is supplied by imports.

A thermogravimetric study has been conducted to follow the decomposition and volatilization of arsenic from enargite concentrate in nitrogen and slightly oxidizing atmospheres. Temperature has a large effect on the rate of volatilization of arsenic. Fractional volatilization of arsenic as high as 98% were obtained in less than 60 min at 650°C in nitrogen atmosphere, while in slightly oxidizing atmosphere the same volatilization could be achieved in 30 min. It was found that arsenic volatilizes as sulfide in nitrogen atmosphere and as 4xture of sulfide and oxide in atmospheres containing 1% oxygen. By using the pore blocking and the first order kinetic models, apparent activation energies of 213 and 200 kJ/mol for the temperature range of 780 - 900 K and 205 and 184 kJ/mol for the temperature range of 900 - 985 K were determined for enargite and copper concentrate, respectively.

THE object of this investigation was to compare the arsenical antimony-lead alloy with some of the regular bearing-metal alloys. With this end in view, the following tests were made: 1. Chemical analyses to show the composition. 2. Thermal analyses. 3. Macroscopic examination of fractures. 4. Microscopic examination. 5. Tensile tests. 6. Crushing tests. 7. Scleroscope tests. 8. Brinell tests, at temperatures from 80° to 400° F. Tests 3 to 8 were conducted on both sand-cast and chill-cast specimens. For the purposes of this paper the alloys have been numbered from 1 to 6; their composition is as follows: LEAD, ANTIMONY, TIN, COPPER, ARSENIC, NUMBER PER CENT. PER CENT. PER CENT. PER CENT. INTRODUCTION Necessary science and technology are not well established for the design of responsible treatment and disposal of arsenical residues from refractory gold ores. Specifically, there is uncertainty about the precise composition and behaviour of oxidised arsenic species in these wastes, and an analysis of possible chemical behaviour suggests that potentially difficult control and disposal problems remain to be so 1 ved. In tackling these the undoubted toxicity of arsenic in excess and its bad press should not blind one to the realities of actual behaviour in the environment, and that some adverse behaviour inevitably has to be to 1 erated as a cost in return for the recovery of an operation's gold for society. The problem is to minimise any such cost. Each refractory ore will be different. Many will contain so little arsenic that it will cause only trivial problems in disposal, but there remain others with significant arsenic content, say in the order of 1% or more, to cause concern. As already implied, concern can be over emphasised but equally underestimated. The balance which must be struck in the design of responsible disposal in the widest sense requires objective and practical assessment of a complex range of chemical, biochemical, engineering and economic design factors, all of which should involve the process design team in constructive dialogue with the 1 oca l regulatory authorities. In British terms, the general objective should be the Best Practicable Environmental Option. Arsenic is ubiquitous in waters, rocks and soils and all living things. Its compounds undergo natural geochemical and bi ochemi cal cycles including powerful adsorption and precipitation processes which return to nature all leakage from the inevitable disturbance of mining and extraction operations. Within limits, all life is tolerant to its presence, and adaptation and detoxication processes occur to deal with local excesses.

The toxicity of arsenic is well known and documented. However, the presence of arsenic in copper electrorefining anodes and electrolyte is critically necessary to produce high quality cathode. Arsenic as well as antimony and bismuth concentrations vary depending on their relative concentration in the anode copper received from the smelter. This paper will discuss the behaviour and benefits of arsenic in copper electrorefining and the detrimental effects of antimony and bismuth on cathode quality and tankhouse performance. This will include the minimization and mitigation of problems associated with arsenic, antimony and bismuth including cathode contamination, floating slimes, scaling and anode passivation.

"Perhaps .I should start this talk on Arsine poisoning, by giving a brief background and history of the Bralorne Mill.The present Bralorne company started milling operations in 1932, with amalgamation and flotation, and operated continuously until 19 61 . In 19 59, it was decided to change over to cyanidation, and to use double filtration rather than counter current. The cyanide portion of this new plant was completed and went on stream in August 1961 utilizing the grinding circuit of the old flotation plant. The new grinding circuit was completed and started operating December 15, 1961.The grinding circuit consists of a 7 1 x 101 Hardinge Rod Mill, and a 7 1 x 101 Hardinge Ball Mill. In series with the rod mill is a 16"" x 24"" Denver Duplex Jig, and two of these jigs are also in parallel with the ball mill. The rod mill product is classified by a Kreb cyclone, the oversize going to the ball mill. The ball mill is in closed circuit with this same cyclone. The jig products are amalgamated daily, and the amalgam barrel tails are returned to the ball mill for regrind. Arsenious oxide (As203) is one of the reagents used in amalgamation. Approximately 39 ozs. per day is used.The cyanide circuit consists of a 481 x 121 thickener, three 24' x 24' agitators, two 141 x 161 drum filters and a Merrill Crowe precipitation unit.The Krebcone overflow is thickened to 60 - 62% solids. Hydrated lime, along with a settling agent is added to the thickener. Some of the overflow water from the thickener is returned for use in the jigs. The balance of this overflow water goes to waste. To the thickened pulp entering No. 1 agitator, barren solution is added, along with sodium cyanide and hydrated lime. Cyanide strength is held at 0. 9 - 1. 0 lbs/ ton solution and lime at 0. 8 lbs/ ton solution. The lime content usually drops to 0. 5 lbs/ ton in No. 3 agitator. The two drum filters are in series and are washed with barren solution. The discharge of No. 3 agitator is fed to No. 1 filter and the discharge of No. 1 filter is repulped in barren solution and feeds No. 2 filter. No. 2 filter discharges to tails, The filtrate is clarified, deaerated and the gold precipitated. One hundred to two hundred tons of barren solution are bled to waste each day. The ore contains 1 % Arsenopyrite and 1. 5% Pyrite."

Let’s start off with your assessment of the mining industry. Today, the status of the mining industry is stronger than it has been over the previous few years. While mining continues to be a major part of the world’s economic foundation, the industry is gaining strength due to rebounding metals and minerals prices. And now, with these rising prices and the changes the industry instituted during the years when mining-related commodities were selling at low prices, our stronger, more productive and internationally competitive industry should flourish. Mining remains an essential business and the industry is far ahead of the game when it comes to the trend of globalization as a key to sustained growth. Also, the industry continues to realize increased productivity through technological innovations. And an increasing number of countries are moving towards capitalism, which opens doors for exploration and mining within their borders. After looking at all of these factors, I believe that the mining industry will only continue to gain momentum in the future.

Henry Carlisle: This is June, 1961, and my friend Arthur Bunker is on the other side of the tape recorder. I, Henry Carlisle, am pursuing the hobby of chronicling the interesting parts of the mining careers and the lives of well-known mining engineers. Now, Arthur, supposing we skip, for the time being, where you were born and brought up, and start right in with where you went to school. Arthur Bunker: I graduated from Taft School and then went to Yale, Sheffield Scientific School, and took a course in electrical engineering. I was quite fascinated by higher mathematics and physics, and this offered more in mathematics and physics than any other one of the engineering courses at that time. The school was only a three-year course, and so I graduated from there in 1916.

By two o'clock Wednesday afternoon things had quieted down enough so we had our interview in the foyer to the Ball Room. There were the usual questions. Where were you born? In La Salle County, Ill., on March 26, 1885. Where did you go to school? Northwestern University, B.S. degree in 1906. Where did you start work? For E. J. Longyear right after leaving school. One's ability as a geologist was measured by one's ability to wield a brush hook and ax. He stayed on the job as geologist for three years and then got to thinking about the advantages of a warmer climate. The advantages stacked up favorably, so off he went to Birmingham, Ala., just about the time U.S. Steel took over the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co.

YALE UNIVERSITY looked like a top-notch school to "Bert" Phillips in spite of the belief that the college in the home town sometimes looks less attractive than a more distant campus. So Bert, a native of New Haven, earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Yale. Immediately after Yale days lie served as metallurgist of the Scovill Manufacturing Co., Waterbury, and then went to the Central Research Laboratories of the American Smelting and Refining Co. at Maurer, N. J., where since 1931 he has been superintendent of research. Bert has contributed to metallurgical literature many reports of studies on the constitution and the physical, metallurgy of copper and copper alloys as well as papers on general nonferrous physical metallurgy.

THE 1944 Chairman of the Institute of Metals Division might be classed as metallurgically ambidextrous ; he is teacher of theory and practice of both nonferrous and ferrous metallurgy, and he is consultant on brass and on highspred steel. Arthur Phillips was born in Troy N.Y. and attended the New Haven Connecticut high school. Upon graduation he entered Yale, receiving a degree in metallurgy in 1913. At that time Professor Mathewson was starting his plan of '"co-operation with the metal industries in metallographic work at the Hammond Laboratory of the Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, and Arthur Phillip, became the first co-operative graduate student, working in the laboratory of the Bridgeport Brass Co., and receiving his Masters of Science degree in 1915. A little later, when the department of metallurgy at Yale was expanded. Me. Phillips was appointed assistant professor. In 1928 he was made associate professor, and in 1934 he was promoted to full professor.

TO metallurgists generally, Arthur S. Dwight is no stranger even to those who do not know him personally. He is one of those contributors to technical progress whose names will go down to posterity because of their being attached to a successful machine or process, such as Dorr, Hardinge, or Marcy, or Wedge, MacDougall, or Herreshoff. The roasting and sintering method and equipment developed by Colonel Dwight and his associate, the late Richard L. Lloyd, may be found in lead smelters throughout the world, and also in many metallurgical works dealing with other ores, including those of iron. It is ordinarily used to desulphurize and agglomerate fine ores for subsequent smelting. Colonel Dwight's citation as James Douglas Medalist reads: "For his contributions to the art of smelting nonferrous ores; and particularly for his pioneer work in developing equipment and technique for sintering such ores and metallurgical products." The medal was awarded at the last Annual Meeting of the A.I.M.E. but unfortunately the medalist was unable to leave Florida at the time to receive it in person.

"INTRODUCTION Conventional mine planning is performed on a single resource model at a selective mining unit (SMU) scale deemed appropriate for the deposit and mining method. Estimation methods such as kriging and inverse distance, commonly used to construct a single model, are susceptible to histogram smoothing (Rossi & Deutsch, 2014). This can be mitigated by limiting the number of composites per estimate, therefore correctly reproducing the distribution of estimates (Boisvert & Deutsch, 2012). Search limiting techniques remedy histogram smoothing at the cost of introducing a problematic conditional bias (Isaaks, 1999) and introduces even greater spatial smoothing. Localization is an alternative, offering histogram reproduction through post processing of more robust probabilistic modeling techniques. A single localized model at the SMU scale is desirable. The correct histogram can be reproduced and a single model allows for the use of conventional mine planning and resource evaluation techniques. Despite the advertized benefits of localization, the necessary reliance on a larger panel scale as a middle step in the localization process yields unsightly “edge-effect” artifacts (Boisvert & Deutsch, 2012). Two approaches to artifact reduction are presented here. The first is a straight forward optimization approach designed to minimize an objective function that penalizes artifacts including panel edge discontinuities to generate a model free of panel edge-effects. The second approach redefines a panel in a less conventional fashion as a randomly chosen set of SMUs throughout the domain. This method produces a model void of any regular panel shape resulting in an artifact free model. Artifact reduction minimizes the obvious “edge-effect” issues of localization but local precision issues described by Boisvert & Deutsch (2012) persist. Localization is not a replacement for quantified uncertainty for comprehensive risk analysis and resource evaluation. LOCALIZATION Initially developed with Uniform Conditioning in mind, localization collapses a distribution of local uncertainty at a panel scale to an SMU scale model for mine planning (Abzalov, 2006). This process has been extended to Indicator Kriging (Hardke, 2011), Sequential Gaussian Simulation (Boisvert & Deutsch, 2012) and MultiGaussian Kriging (Daniels and Deutsch, 2014). The localization process is performed in a similar fashion regardless of which technique is chosen to create the prior model of uncertainty. Methodology There are three scales of importance considered in the localization process. The point scale, otherwise known as the data scale, is the smallest and is the scale at which experimental data is collected. The SMU or block scale is the familiar scale at which mine planning and resource evaluation takes place. Lastly, the panel scale is larger and contains a number of SMUs. Each of the three scales is illustrated in Figure 1."

In a recent speech in Pittsburgh, Dr. George Keyworth, the President's Science Advisor, made a statement which I believe deserves our very careful consideration. Dr. Keyworth said that there is no energy crisis. The crisis, he explained, is simply that people refuse to accept the solution. The solution which Dr. Keyworth has in mind is increased utilization of our abundant supplies of solid fuels and, in particular, uranium. I share his view concerning the solution to our energy needs. The use of uranium fuel is a safe, clean, and dependable means to generate our electric power. It is time that we addressed the real energy crisis: the refusal to accept the nuclear solution. The reason for the refusal is not difficult to find. It is nihilistic thinking about risk. Under this thinking, we assume the worst possible case and act accordingly, simply because we cannot prove to a total certainty that nuclear energy is perfectly safe. If this absolutist approach were generally applied throughout our society, there is no doubt all of us would soon be sitting around our campfires fearfully holding the wild animals at bay with our trusty spears. Today I am here to enlist your support in reversing the regulatory trend that threatens the very extistence of the nuclear power industry. As distinguished scientists, engineers and businessmen, you can use your influence to help bring rational regulation to the industry. Our industry supports strong safety and environmental protection programs. We understand the need for and do not object to reasonable regulation. Many anti-pollution measures can be practical to implement, cost effective and highly successful in minimizing environmental impacts. However, it is a fact of life that in the field of health and safety regulation, the law of diminishing returns operates with a vengeance. Absolute or near-absolute safety is impossible and any attempt to achieve it is intolerably costly. Fixation on absolute safety is particularly acute in the regulation of the nuclear power industry. Government Agencies, overly anxious to allay the irrational fears of those opposed to nuclear power, are literally regulating the industry to death - exactly the result sought by the anti-nuclear groups. Dr. Robert L. DuPont wrote in a recent issue of [Business Week]: "The nuclear power industry has been virtually stopped in the U.S. [because of fear]. This is true despite the fact that for more than 20 years the commercial nuclear industry has operated under unprecedented public health scrutiny and that to date there have been no radiation-related injuries, let alone deaths, suffered by any member of the public."1 I believe a useful way to convey the nature of the problem faced by the nuclear industry is to review an example of [unreasonable] regulation. While the example relates to our domestic industry, I am certain there are similar situations in other countries. For the example I will use the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's recently issued regulations governing the stabilization of uranium mill tailings.2 These regulations, known as the Uranium Mill Licensing Requirements, specify, among other things, that radon emanation from uranium mill tailings be limited to no more than 2 pCi/m2-sec. First, one must understand that this standard will have virtually no impact on the total amount of radon to which the public is exposed. Radon emitted from even completely unstabilized tailings piles is a tiny fraction--much less than 1%--of the amount of radon released from natural soils in the United States.3 In fact, it is far outweighed by natural variations in the background flux. For example, changes in the level of the Great Salt Lake in recent years have had [eight times] as much effect on the amount of radon released into the Salt Lake City regional air than the annual release from the Vitro Mill tailings pile located in that city.4 Nevertheless, NRC claims that the standard is required to protect the public. The Commission admits, however, that there are no studies which establish that exposure to radon at the low levels associated with uranium mill tailings will result in any adverse health effects.5 In the absence of actual evidence, the Commission assumes that some such effects will occur on the basis of the linear, non-threshold model.6 Employing this model, NRC calculates that the maximum hypothetical risk for the average member of the population is only about 1 in 70,000,000 from the radon that would be emitted from [three times] the number of mills now in existence, even if the tailings produced through the year 2000 are left unstabilized.7 NRC has elsewhere explained that this level of risk would be equivalent to the risk posed by "a few puffs on a cigarette, a few sips of wine, driving the family car about 6 blocks, flying about 2 miles, canoeing for 3 seconds, or being a man age 60 for 11 seconds." This level of risk is [de minimis] in comparison to other risks commonly and readily incurred in our society.9 Moreover, even this remote risk is overstated. A group of prominent health physicists, including experts from the Department of Energy, The Environmental Protection Agency, Britain, Canada and Germany recently published a study indicating that the risk to the public per unit exposure to radon can be no greater than one-third that suggested by the Commission, and [may in fact be zero].l0 Regulators routinely rationalize the need for their regulations. For example, NRC attempts to justify the radon flux standard because it is necessary to reduce the risk to someone who builds a house on top of a tailings pile. "Groundwater inflow into underground constructions may cause hazardous working conditions and environmental problems. It is essential to localize and characterize potential flow paths and to estimate the amount of water leakages, so that appropriate sealing works can be performed. Estimating the amount of water ingress is a multi-phase process starting from qualitative and quantitative examination of rock mass. Due to association of uncertainty, vagueness and incompleteness with the monitored data set, particularly resulted from the in situ tests, accounting relevant approaches such Fuzzy Logic and Recurrent Neural Networks, are proposed in this research for learning acquisition, extraction of rules and prediction of behaviors. The computational set of artificial tools permits using the complex information entities or information granules (rock types, geologic structures, hydro-fracture potential) for data abstraction and derivation of knowledge from records (numerical or linguistic format). This is more a theoretical perspective than a set of methods or principles. As a theoretical perspective, this proposal encourages an approach to data that recognizes and exploits the information present in indexes at various levels of resolution or scales. In this sense, it encompasses the methods which provide flexibility and adaptability in the resolution at which knowledge or information is extracted and represented. The product of merging these tools is a 3D artificial-mapping of rock classification (Qi-system), geological conditions and Lugeon units that permits, as far as possible, to understand more and better the flow behavior."

"The use of Artificial Ground Freezing (AGF) for temporary soil strengthening and seepage control is an effective alternative to grouting when dealing with soils whose degree of finesses would imply the use of highly expensive chemical grouts. However, compared to grouting, the application of this improvement technique usually needs a more accurate preliminary soil investigation campaign and a design assisted by specific calculation software. Besides a general description of the main features of this technique, the paper will describe a recent application of AGF carried out in Rome to underpass an existing metro station.INTRODUCTIONNatural ground freezing occurs seasonally or permanently (permafrost) in some areas of the globe close to the poles and can negatively affect the engineering performance of underground structures. On the other hand, Artificial Ground Freezing (AGF) is man-made controllable freezing process that can be used in foundation engineering to temporarily strengthen the ground and create a barrier to the passage of groundwater. During the process, the heat is extracted from the soil in a cylindrical shape around a number of freezing pipes installed into the ground. This action produces columns of frozen soil, which expand gradually till they merge and create continuous frozen wall. The thickness of this barrier can be regulated according to the specific project requirements. Nowadays, AGF technique is applied to a wide range of foundation engineering problems where soil stability and groundwater flows are an issue (Pimentel et al. 2011, Haß and Schäfers, 2013). Typical applications include the temporary stabilization and waterproof of the ground around the excavation profile of mined tunnels until the construction of the final lining (Figure 1).The case history described in this paper deals with a recent application of AGF carried out during the construction of metro Line “C” in Rome. Specifically, this technique has been applied to allow the construction of two single-track mined tunnels running underneath an existing metro station belonging to Line “A”. In that case, the AGF has been evaluated by the Designers as the only possible solution for improving the mechanical and hydraulic characteristics"

This paper describes an artificial ground freezing (AGF) application carried out to ensure both watertightness and structural support for the safe excavation of four cross passages of the Forrestfield Airport Link (FAL) project in Perth. The line will deliver 8.5 km extension of the existing urban rail network connecting the growing eastern suburbs of Perth with the existing suburban rail network. The proposed soil improvement technique is adopted as a smart alternative to jet grouting from the surface since the use of heavy equipment with long vertical mast was not allowed due to the line underpassing an airport in operation. In this paper, details of the challenges and lessons learned during both design and construction phases are given. Furthermore, it is described the geometry and the installation of freeze pipes in presence of a massive steel frame, ventilation system and slurry pipes of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) in operation. It is also illustrated the web monitoring system to allow key personnel to follow in real time the development of soil temperatures, tunnel convergences and ground surface deformations as well as changes in the interaction between international parties involved due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This paper seeks to establish an empirical relationship between the impact of mining technological innovation implementation and a company’s market value. The company’s market value is represented by its stock price. In a bid to ascertain the relationship, a stock price prediction model is sought to be established using the firm-specific factors impacted by the implementation of innovative technology. This work is performed under the watch of the prevailing macroeconomic factors. The background anchors in the understanding that the difference between the economic status of a mineral deposit and its uneconomic status lies in the level of mining technological innovation most prevalent at a given time (Hartwick, Olewiler and Preuss, 1986; Wellmer and Scholz, 2017; Wright and Czelusta, 2003). This is derived from productivity improvement, resulting in sustainable profitability due to technological innovation. Unfortunately, there is not an adequately established relationship that links this technological innovation impact to the share price performance of the mineral commodity company.
