"Froth flotation is a process in which valuable minerals are separated from gangue minerals on the basis of surface wettabilities. It is a universally accepted process for the beneficiation of coal. The large amount of coal fines that have been generated from both mining and beneficiation processes has been reported as a chronic problem to both fine coal preparation and utilization as these fines contain a high amount of ash forming minerals. The current study investigated the potential application of Synthetic Bio-compatible Polymers as slime depressants in fine coal flotation for the possibility to enhance the combustible recovery and ash rejection. Raw coal samples containing 21% of ash-forming minerals were crushed, grinded and floated in the presence of Chitosan polymer. Flotation tests were carried out in D-12 Denver flotation cell with 1-Liter capacity. Flotation outcomes were studied as a function of polymer concentration. Box-Behnken factorial method was used for experimental design. Second order response functions were produced for ash% and combustible recovery. The results obtained from this study demonstrated positive influence of chitosan polymer on ash% and combustible recovery. Ash % was decreased by 3.32 % while an increase of 48.15 % in combustible recovery was observed when chitosan was introduced in the flotation process. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is a widely used method of separating minerals by utilizing the difference between surface wettabilities [1], [2].Modern mechanized mining and ore handling operations produce large amounts of coal fines which in the past were not processed but discarded as waste[3]. Even though flotation is the best method of beneficiation for coal, it can be challenging in case of fine coals. In fine coals, slime coatings of colloidal mineral matter exist on the coal surface. These coatings render the coal hydrophilic, hence reducing flotation efficiency and recovery. Of late, different researches have been using biodegradable polymers to determine their feasibility in enhancing fine coal flotation efficiency[4].Naturally occurring and synthetic polymers, for example, polyacrylamide-based polymers, have been widely used in flotation as multifunctional reagents[5],[6],[7]. Hybrid polyacrylamide polymer has been successfully used as a depressant for ash forming minerals in fine coal flotation[3]. Recently, chitosan has been successfully used in flocculating quartz particles to produce faster settling rates of fine tailings [4]."

While the use of synthetic polymers for solid/liquid separation is not raw technology (1)(its history goes back to the mid 1950's), its importance has increased dramatically over the past decade. This can be attributed to two major factors. The first of these was a change to mechanized mining (strip mining and continuous underground miners) which resulted in a lower quality (higher reject) preparation plant feed, as well as a higher percentage of smaller size particles in the feed. The second factor has been the greater restrictions imposed by governmental agencies on effluent discharge and solids impoundment, requiring pre-treatment of recirculating water before reuse and treatment of refuse before disposal. Today, synthetic polymers find utility in almost all applications requiring separation of solids from aqueous suspension, including "in-process" as well as waste treatment applications. In spite of the fact that there are over several hundred commercially different flocculants available in the marketplace (2), there are a limited number of chemically different materials available which are useful from a cost/performance standpoint. The potential reasons for using flocculants in a coal preparation plant are summarized in TABLE 1.

Synthetic seismograms of reflectivity method and some field records available are studied to detect the amplitude anomalies at the interface of the gaothermal reservoir the gas and/or oil boundary, and the underground tunnel. The first arrival of PO wave on the P-SV record are weak and emergent while those of P wave only rotated with respect to an incident angle are clear. This can, be explained by means of the energy loss of P-SV wave conversion. The primary reflections of P waves about depth fade away as compared to SH waves which do not perform any conversion, although they hold high attenuation in the fully saturated fluid layers. Reflection of comparable strength is present at the P-wave and S-wave... boundaries, but gas-saturated zones correlating with P wave bright spots do not show equivalent attenuation anomalies. Thus the comparative technique of P-SV wave and SI i wave records is very useful to indicate the strong amplitude anomalies at the boundaries of sealing targets.

This paper explores how to apply system dynamics principles to surface mining problems towards understanding the consequences of mining efficiencies. Some simulation examples related to machine and people performance have been used to demonstrate systems engineering concepts to mining engineers. The simulation tool used is Vensim, which is widely used in industrial engineering applicable to systems thinking, and systems dynamics. The science and mathematics behind the system dynamics as well as benefits and typical challenges are discussed to explore the applicability to mining problems. The benefit of having one less drill is easily quantifiable with the developed model which is one of many other measurable benefits, using the developed model. Some of the benefits of the improved quality of drill holes are not fully quantified as this depends on the mine specific inputs. There are examples of quantifying this in the other industries using system dynamics tools.

"SynopsisMining value chains are dynamic systems and should be managed according to systemic flow-based principles. This includes a detailed focus on the impact of variable geological conditions on material flow, product quality, and production cost, visibility of the total mining system to operators and managers, as well as the synchronization of resources and activities in downstream processes. Thirty mining operations across the African continent were studied to establish to what extent systemic flowbased principles are applied in day-to-day operations. The study indicated that although most mining operations have identified the relevant geoprocessing variables, only a small number apply this information in a flow-based management approach. Most mining operators do not focus on developing a clear flow view of the mining value chain and on making it visible to operators and managers to enable them to optimally set and reset operations. Daily synchronization of geoprocessing variables is limited to a small number of variables, e.g. synchronizing ore hardness with drilling or milling requirements, in less than 30% of the operations evaluated. Operations where these principles have been adopted reported a noteworthy improvement in performance. The study indicates that notable potential exists in most of the operations evaluated to implement flowbased management principles, including geometallurgical principles. This can significantly improve value chain performance without exorbitant capital layouts and enhance ROCE. IntroductionObjective of the studyThe study seeks to establish to what extent systemic flow-based principles have been adopted in the southern African mining industry and the implications thereof. Specific attention is given to the importance of defining and managing geoprocessing dependencies (geological variables directly impacting mining and plant performance – the geometallurgical approach), establishing a flow view of the mining system, which typically includes a dashboard of the flow of ore/product quality and cost from the mining face to the customer, and limiting the impact of dependencies through synchronization of activities and resources, e.g. ensuring that a continuous miner does not wait for a roofbolter, or that reagent addition rates are matched with a specific ore/concentrate composition."

Controlling the access of equipment, and people, has become more critical over the last few years for improving productivity and to meet safety responsibilities imposed by legislated obligations to have safety management systems. Hence Mine Site Technologies (MST) has spent the last three years completing the development of the tagging system to meet the mining industryÆs requirements, particularly streamlining access control. The basic tagging system tracks active Tags carried by personnel, or attached to vehicles and equipment, within underground zones. These Tags are detected (read) by Beacons placed strategically throughout the mine. As a Tag, or Tags, go past a Beacon they are read and the information transmitted back to the main database PC. This allows the current whereabouts of personnel and equipment to be known, as well as the history of their movements. The objectives of implementing the TRACKER Tagging System at Oaky No 1 Coal Mine were to: maintain a count of personnel inbye a particular point, and can alarm when a pre-set number is reached (eg the limit imposed by availability of SCSRÆs, etc); maintain a count of vehicles (and vehicle type) inbye a point, and can alarm if when a pre-set number is reached (eg when rated diesel units exceeds the limit for the ventilation present in that zone); manage the vehicle fleet, by keeping track of various vehicles underground better control and dispatch management of the equipment is achieved; keep track of equipment, knowing the location of equipment (such as forks, baskets, pumps, fans, etc) where last used or stored will minimise the risk of losing gear and assist in keeping inventory to a minimum; and locate personnel in emergency situations, by placing read Beacons throughout the mine the location of all personnel can be known in real time so that in the event of an emergency, their withdrawal can be monitored.

"While many classic mineral processing circuit design approaches rely on deterministic methods, numerous studies have shown that the uncertainty inherent to the various input parameters can significantly influence design decisions. In a separation circuit, many of the technical uncertainties can be mathematically represented as statistical distributions for the unit recovery and feed grade. These uncertainties are then propagated by the circuit design and reflected in the circuit performance indicators, such as product grade and global recovery. An effective design strategy entails identifying which units are most influential in this uncertainty propagation and thus merit further consideration. Unfortunately, few analytical tools provide this information, particularly those that rely solely on deterministic methods. However, one promising approach is through the application of Taguchi’s method, in a fashion similar to statistical tolerancing of manufactured products. Since the technical challenges are fundamentally similar, Taguchi’s method shows promise in evaluating the level of compounded uncertainty by various circuit designs while determining the role of each separation stage on the overall selectivity and variability of separation circuits. This paper demonstrates Taguchi’s method in several two and three unit circuit designs. INTRODUCTION AND METHOD DESCRIPTION Uncertainty in Mineral Processing Circuit Design Analysis and estimation of uncertainty propagation in mineral processing separation circuits is an essential and significant aspect of an optimal circuit design procedure. Most of the current circuit design methodologies have been constructed, implemented, and validated using a deterministic modeling approach. However, numerous studies have shown that the inherent uncertainty induced by uncertain design parameters can be a significant factor in many mineral processing applications (e.g. Kraslawski 1989; Xiao and Vien 2003; Ghaffari et al. 2012). Thus, an effective circuit design methodology must be able to quantify uncertainty in separation circuits with limited input data. This paper describes Taguchi’s method, as an experimental design technique, to approximate uncertainty in mineral processing applications, and then the similarity of results between Taguchi’s method and Monte Carlo Simulation is investigated. Monte Carlo Simulation The term “Monte Carlo Simulation” has been used to refer to a variety of stochastic simulation methods spanning a broad array of business, technical, and scientific domains. Most generally, Monte Carlo Simulation refers to numerical analysis which is based on (pseudo) random sampling from a domain of input parameters with a known statistical distribution. This methodology allows one to determine the distribution of expected results from a standard deterministic process model. Execution of a Monte Carlo simulation begins by identifying the domain of input parameters, statistical distributions for each parameter, and a deterministic process model which describes the anticipated result as a function of the inputs. Next, one discrete random sample is taken for each input parameter, considering the input distributions. The process model is then solved for this mix of input parameters, producing a single simulation result. This procedure is then repeated a “large” number of times, utilizing new randomly sampled input parameters for each simulation iteration. Once the desired number of iterations is reached, the results of each independent simulation are aggregated to produce descriptive statistics such as minimum, maximum, mean, standard deviation, kurtosis, and other distribution parameters. Given enough iterations, the Monte Carlo method fully explores potential synergies between the input parameters. The slurry of the packed body varies widely in concentration and suitability for different mining conditions. It consists of two liquid materials, each composed of a cementing agent, tailing sand and water. The thick liquids are transported to the packing place at the same time. Their pumping property is good; they do not solidify or block up the pipe during transportation. At the packing place, the two liquids are evenly mixed.The mixed liquid flattens out well and its solidifying speed is so fast that it solidifies into a packed body within a very short period of time. The compressed strength of the packed body can reach 1.2-5MPa in one day, which satisfies the requirements of different mining conditions. By using the new mining technique, all the tailing sand can be used again in the packed body and it is low in cost and investment. "Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the earth’s crust. Not only does quartz have many valuable industrial applications, it is also one of the most concentrated gangue minerals encountered in the processing of other minerals. Minerals such as hematite, apatite, calcite, feldspar, barite, and many more. Numerous applications of industrial minerals are sensitive to the hardness and abrasiveness encountered with quartz minerals, while other applications may lead to processing challenges for the end user. Therefore, process and chemistry optimization must be applied to ensure optimal grade is obtained for these valued industrial minerals. Extensive studies have been conducted in processing various industrial minerals, thus achieving a range of quality specifications, which entailed the application of ArrMaz’s CustoFloat and CustAmine collectors towards the separation of quartz from other minerals. INTRODUCTION Industrial minerals often have the misfortune of the gangue mineral being very similar in surface charge, and coordination properties, to that of the mineral of interest. An example is seen in phosphate beneficiation, when dolomite can be a gangue minerals (Table 1). Therefore, the development of processing reagents are quite complicated. Some minerals, like clays, may be washed away. However, most require the manipulation of the pH, in efforts to fine tune the system to the narrow difference in isoelectric points of the different minerals, as well as the knowledge, and resources that are necessary to exploit the differences to yield and an optimal grade/recovery. In some cases, the application of a depressant may be required, such as the phosphoric acid commonly applied to achieve the optimal balance of grade/recovery for phosphate from a mineral with elevated concentrations of dolomite (Wang, 2016), or the application of hydrofluoric acid to assist in producing feldspar product from a mineral rich in quartz (Heyes, 2012).ArrMaz's CustoFloat and CustAmine product lines have successfully been applied to the processing of industrial minerals for more than 50 years. Applications include, but not limited to phosphate, sand (glass, foundry & high purity quartz), clays (feldspar, kaolin, etc.), and many carbonaceous and sulfate minerals. The successes of these 50 years are largely due to ArrMaz's ability to tailor make the processing chemistries to fit the ever changing and declining mineral feed grade and variations in water quality (Moore, 2015; Moore, 2016). THIS paper makes no claim to any new idea; it simply reviews the Treasury Department Regulations pertaining to the practical application of depreciation and depletion and other allowances governing taxation of oil and gas properties. Other methods may be existent, but as they may not conform to the legal status they must be discarded. In complying with the present laws governing the, industry with regard to taxation and the allowable deductions therefrom, the following considerations are essential: Depletion, depreciation, amortization, other allowances, and items not deductible. It is definitely understood that depletion is the loss or exhaustion sustained in the continuous operating of an oil and gas property, and that each unit of oil or gas taken out reduces the value of the property until its final exhaustion. Depletion applies only to the natural deposits of oil and gas due to their-removal in the course of exploitation of any property. Depreciation is defined to cover the waste of assets due to exhaustion, wear and tear, and obsolescence of the physical property, and is separate and distinct from depletion; its allowance is that amount which should be set aside for the taxable year in such sums as for the useful life of ,the property will suffice to repay its original cost-or its value as of Mar: 1, 1913, if acquired by the taxpayer before that date-less the salvage value at the end of such useful life. Amortization is allowed for such facilities as were built or acquired on or after Apr. 6, 1917, for the production of articles contributing to the prosecution of the war and, in the case of vessels, those built and acquired after that date. The amount to be extinguished, in general, is the excess of the unextinguished or unrecovered cost of the property over its maximum value under stable .post-war conditions.

Cerro Vanguardia SA (CVSA), property of AngloGold Ashanti, mines gold and silver from a system of vetiforme orebodies located in the south of the Argentine Patagonia, in the Province of Santa Cruz.Surface mining techniques are applied to develop a series of narrow pits with an average waste to ore ratio of 26:1. This quite unique constraint brings into focus the need to maximise inter-ramp and final wall angles, leading to a strong need to optimise wall control drilling and blasting in order to reduce back-break damage to an absolute minimum.The paper describes a program of applied investigation and design modification implemented during?2008?and?2009 in?two?separate pits of Cerro Vanguardia. Three distinct yet complementary damage mechanisms were identified and observed during the field components of the work; vibration induced strain fracturing, surface cratering around blasthole collars and quasi-static loading and unloading of the surrounding rock mass as a consequence of poorly controlled confinement.With these mechanisms identified, a measurement, modelling and modification campaign was conducted in order to reduce the incidence of each source of damage. Interactive design analysis and modelling, near-field vibration measurement, video capture and the application of electronic initiation technology were supported by seed wave modelling and topographic evaluation of the achieved results.Results point to the usefulness of simulation techniques for determining optimum delay timing to reduce vibration impact, while the visualisation of explosive energy distribution produced by drilling and explosive loading decisions assists in reducing the probability of over-confinement.This paper presents relevant aspects of the two fieldwork campaigns:1) describing the application of the techniques, and2) summarising the results obtained.

"The majority of U.S. underground coal mines use some form of cable bolt as supplemental support to a primary roof bolting system. Many coal operators employ the high load capacity of non-tensioned cable bolts, cable roof trusses, or solid bar trusses in an attempt to suspend the primary bolted horizon to overlying strata. However, in cases where many discontinuities exist in the roof strata or where pre-existing fractures are present, these passive supplemental support systems often cannot adequately control roof deflection. This paper examines the application of tensioned cable systems to minimize roof deflection in very laminated and fractured strata. Three underground case studies are presented to demonstrate the application of tensioned cable bolts. The first case study involves the rehabilitation of a longwall head gate in the Eagle Seam with highly laminated and fractured sandstone. The second case study examines the recovery of a longwall face in the Alma Seam. The final case study addresses rehabilitation of a longwall head gate in the Pittsburgh No. 8 Seam that was developed in a sandstone channel margin area and subjected to horizontal stress concentration.INTRODUCTIONDuring the previous decade, Jennmar Corporation has recognized coal operators' increasing interest in tensioned cable bolts. The majority of these tensioned cable bolt systems have been applied in adverse roof conditions including broken ground, high horizontal stress areas, and highly laminated roof strata. In most cases, qualitative data on roof conditions after application of tensioned cable bolt support indicate successful implementation of these systems. The qualitative evidence suggests that the combination of high load' capacity and applied tension provides superior supplemental roof support in adverse roof conditions. This research aims to quantify the effects of applied tension to cable bolts. This paper will review the types and installation of tensioned cable bolt systems, present initial laboratory test data, discuss successful case studies, and propose an instrumentation system for quantification of tensioned cable bolt performance."

Pearson's hard and soft acid and base (HSAB) principle may be applied to flotation systems. The HSAB principle states that hard acids prefer to bond with hard bases and soft acids prefer to bond with soft bases. By determining the Drago E and C parameters for the different components of a flotation system, the HSAB principle could be used to explain the selectivity of some collectors such as thionocarbamates against some minerals. Determination of these parameters is done by utilizing Drago's theory and flow micro-calorimetry.

Application of the Anaconda Simplified Work Index for Multiple Test Sizes Vale uses Bond Work Index measurements extensively in a number of applications. The Bond Work Index is usually a good parameter for checking scale up procedures when sizing ball mills, as well as the basis for variability analysis whenever drill core data is available. It is typical to measure between 100 and 150 Bond Work Indexes, depending on the deposit characteristics. The Bond procedure is relatively complex and time costly. It also requires relatively large amounts of sample, which are very expensive to be obtained. The benefits of the Anaconda simplified procedure are: considerably smaller sample requirements and laboratory time. This makes it very much attractive at Vale's development centre, including geometallurgical mapping, operation efficiency control, mine to mill, etc. The Anaconda simplified procedure was implemented and evaluated at Vale's Development Centre using a number of ores and several samples of each ore totalling more than 190 measurements. The Anaconda simplified method was calibrated for several test sieves and a correlation for any test size was determined for Vale's test mill. The calibration was also extended for two sample top sizes. The relative error of the simplified procedure was found to be in the range of nine per cent which is within the expected error Bond standard procedure. The implementation of the Anaconda method at Vale's development center has been used with great success over the past years in several green field, brown field projects and operating plants.

The aqueous biphase separation process (ABS) has been used to separate ultrafine industrial minerals. The partition behavior ofTiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and kaolin was not pH dependent. The partition behavior of SiO2 was, however, pH dependent. The partition coefficient of kaolin in PEG 3400/ Na2CO3 biphase system was 150 and that of the silica in the same system was 0.02, resulting in a separation factor of 8500 between kaolin and silica. The aqueous biphase separation system was used to separate free silica from kaolin in a raw clay sample from Mexico. The partition behavior of mica, feldspar and clay from North Carolina was also evaluated.

"SynopsisThe application of the attainable region (AR) technique to the analysis of ball milling is currently limited to batch data. This paper introduces the use of the technique to continuous milling.To this end, an industrial open milling circuit processing a platinum ore was surveyed. Samples were collected and later characterized by means of laboratory batch testing. On site, several milling parameters were varied systematically so as to collect data for modelling purposes. These paramters included ball filling, slurry concentration, and feed flow rate. After data analysis, a simulation model of the open milling circuit was developed under MODSIM®, a modular simulator for mineral processing operations. The mill was then simulated and the data generated was analysed within the AR framework.Initial findings reveal an opportunity to gain valuable insight by studying milling using the AR technique. From an exploratory perspective and inasmuch as this study is concerned, feed flow rate, ball size, and ball filling were identified as being pivotal for the optimization of open ballmilling circuits. Mill speed, on the other hand, had only a limited effect on the production of particles in the size range -75 +10 µm.IntroductionGlasser and Hildebrandt (1997) propounded the attainable region (AR) as a technique for the analysis of chemical engineering reactor systems. Results have since been produced and tested on both the laboratory and pilot scales. The method results in a graphical description of chemical reactions by considering the fundamental processes taking place in the system, rather than the equipment. From the plotted graphs, the process and the reactors can be synthesized optimally into a flow sheet.The use of the AR method still has a long way to go as far as mineral processing is concerned. For instance, several articles have reported the application of the AR technique to ball milling: Khumalo et al. (2006, 2007, 2008); Khumalo (2007); Metzger et al. (2009, 2012); Metzger (2011); Katubilwa et al. (2011); Hlabangana et al. (2012). Their main shortcoming has been the exclusive use of laboratory batch grinding data.To address this deficiency, Mulenga and Chimwani (2013) proposed a way by which the technique could be extended to continuous milling. In effect, the batch milling characteristics of a platinum-bearing ore (Chimwani et al., 2013) were used and scaled up to an open milling circuit. Then, with simplifying assumptions, an attempt was made to optimize the residence time of particles inside the mill. Later, Chimwani et al. (2014a) presented some optimization examples involving various milling parameters. The sequence of published articles then paved the way for the study of industrial milling systems with the AR methodology."

When the Hedley Mascot mill was built in 1935, it was designed as a straight flotation plant. The ore to be treated at that time was a gold ore in which the gold was intimately associated with arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite in highly silicified and garnetized limestone gangue. This material was ground to 85 per cent minus 325 mesh in two-stage grinding and floated in standard flotation cells to produce about a 5-ounce concentrate, which was shipped to Tacoma smelter for refining. This arrangement gave us a recovery of about 89 per cent. Test work indicated that the best way to improve this recovery would be to build a cyanide plant to treat our flotation middling. Arrangements for the construction of this plant were finally approved and work on it was started in the spring of 1940. This plant was of the conventional type in which the flotation middlings were thickened, filtered, and then put through the usual cyanide process. Its capacity was 50 tons of middlings per day. This arrangement worked quite satisfactorily and gave us an increase in overall recovery of 4 per cent. Unfortunately, about the time the plant was completed, we developed, and started to ship to the mill, ore that differed entirely from that met with up to that time. Instead of being hard, it was very soft, the orebody from which- it came being much faulted and brecciated. In many sections, the sulphides were oxidized and the breccia was filled in with a very soft, hydrous iron silicate known as chloropal. When this new ore was mixed with the old ore and sent to the mill, the whole operation was disrupted. The chloropal slimed so badly that the classification, flotation circuits, and cyanide plant would not handle it. The difficulty in the cyanide plant was at the head end, where the 10 ft. by 20 ft. thickener and the 8 ft. by 8ft. drum filter would not handle the middlings containing a large percentage of primary slime and chloropal. This material would not thicken to more than 30 per cent solids in the thickener and, when pumped to the filter, would forma very thin, slimy cake. Overall recovery dropped to between 83 and 84 percent and it was quite apparent that some extensive changes would have to be made in our flow-sheet before this ore could be treated successfully.

"In this research, image analysis technique, Kuz-Ram and KCO Models were used to examineefficiency of the quarry blasts. Investigations were performed in Cendere region, Istanbul. As a firststep, image analysis software was used to determine particle size distribution of muckpiles.Additionally, the results of KuzRam and KCO fragmentation models were compared to the results ofthe image analysis technique. The efficiency of KuzRam and KCO models was investigated and theimportant points to be considered were explained. Additionally, the effect of the rock factor valueson the size distribution curves was investigated. The blasthole diameter is 89 mm. (3.5 in) in thestudied quarry. Each measured blast has a different burden, spacing and stemming length. Blastholes was drilled in a staggered pattern. It is concluded that, KuzRam and KCO models can be successfully used to determine fragment size distribution in Cendere Region Quarries, Istanbul. Site engineers can predict blast fragmentation using the theoretical fragmentation models and they may change blast design parameters before blasting operation if necessary. It is possible to calibrate the Kuz-Ram and KCO fragmentation models using the measurements obtained by image analysis technique."
