"It is extremely difficult for a mine's central control room operator to control peakpower demands and to maintain normal materials handling operations at the same time. An investigation of the Falconbridge Strathcona Mine 's central control room has revealed that there are more than eight thousand possible combinations of ""situations"" that can arise. For such a circumstance, an expert system can become a very valuable tool to assist the operator in taking the most appropriate and timely action.A forward chaining expert system module has been developed for this application. The module is based on Level 5 ObjectTM software. It is graphics oriented and user-friendly. Training requirement is minimal.ForewordThis paper has arisen out of work carried out by YLS Associates and Falconbridge Limited as part of a contract between Falconbridge and the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Government of Canada, on the application of expert systems in mining operations.IntroductionThe electrical bill charged to large consumers by Ontario Hydro is based upon two elements: demand and energy consumption. The demand is the peak kilowatt level that the consumer has required during a monthly period. It is not uncommon for the demand portion to be as much as one third of the monthly bill. Energy consumption is the total kilowatt-hour s (kWh) consumed during the period.Ways to reduce the energy consumption part of the electrical bill involve utilizing energy-efficient equipment and operating machines in off-peak hours when a lower energy rate is charged. Maintaining the peak power below a critical level may require that simultaneous usage of major pieces of equipment be avoided. A 3000 kW skip run at an inopportune time could cost a company an extra $30,000 in that month's power cost.Potential disadvantages associated with peak power control are lost production due to work stoppage and increased operating costs due to the need to employ extra personnel. Most companies find these matters relatively easy to deal with and with incentives provided by Ontario Hydro, actively pursue this facet of energy savings (Harju , 1991)."

Flyrock is the unwanted throw of rock fragments to excessive distances in opencast blasting. The incidence is relative in nature incorporating the distance of objects of concern like structures within and outside the mine, equipment within the mine & near the blast and persons within and off the mine. Several attempts to predict and defi ne fl yrock made worldwide could not address the problem since the phenomenon is not a regular feature in blasting. This probabilistic nature of fl yrock allows for risk calculation. CIMFR, India developed a Factor of Safety based risk criterion (10, 14) for evaluation of throw/ fl yrock in opencast mines that incorporates all the above in terms of distance and allowable limit of throw – which in turn determines the risk. The criterion provides the blaster a tool for mathematical evaluation of fl yrock risk in terms of a Factor of Safety and threat ratio (defi ned for the 1st time), thereby enhancing confidence when blasting. The method is easy to use and has been applied to several mines in India and the results are signifi cant. This paper details the evolution of the concept and its application in three limestone mines of India and the results obtained. The application of the method for defi ning a fl exible danger zone is also discussed.

Factorial optimisation technique has been used to develop regression equations at different time intervals for extraction of manganese from precipitated manganese oxide/hydroxide in sulphuric acid using charcoal as the reductant. The three parameters chosen for a 23 full factorial design were : acid concentration, amount of carbon and temperature. The regression equations were used to predict >> 90% extractions as well as kinetic data.

The impact of fatigue is seen not only in its effect on the job performance of haul truck operators but also on the health of the operator and the productivity at the mine site. Its impact can even extend outside of the mine site to the health and well-being of the surrounding community (Fourie et al., 2010). In this paper, a case study of a small, surface mining organization is presented. The goal is to highlight the fatigue risk management system implemented at the studied mine site. Mine safety personnel who were interviewed discuss the changes made to the infrastructure of the mine, to administrative areas such as the number of shifts and the use of vacation time, as well as the implementation of new technology into haulage vehicles. This paper reviews how these changes are supported in the research literature.

"The highly specialized communication systems used in the mining industry place exacting demands on equipment and transmission media. Safely and reliability of services are perhaps the two most important factors. Fibre optics is ideally suited 10 meet these stringent requirements. Aside from being an intrinsically safe, non-sparking and EMI/RFI immune medium , fibre optics offers greater reliability , higher quality of services and superior flexibility over conventional copper or radio-based communication systems.This paper wilt show how fibre optics can be applied in mining industry applications. The communication system must be rugged , safe and reliable, yet provide an ever increasing amount of high quality services. Presently, these systems are implemented using conventional copper cable. As mining method s and technology advance and the demand for better and more communication services increases, traditional systems quickly reach their limitations. It is under these circumstances that we turn to fibre optic communication systems.Fibre optics is a mature technology which is finding its way into more and more applications worldwide. A fibre optic communication system can provide a level of performance unattainable by conventional cable systems yet ca n be cost competitive. As is well known, fibre optics provides a noise-free, noise-immune, high -capacity communications channel. Glass fibre, being dielectric and non-sparking, is an intrinsically safe communications medium. Clearly, it is ideally suited to the harsh environment present in a mine.From a communication systems point-of-view, the topology of a deep mine is unique. The objective of the systems engineer is to implement a total communications capability throughout this wide spread area. Ideally all classes of services should be accessible throughout the network-an integrated network concept. Recent advances in communications technology combined with fibre optics make this realizable."

A limitation to present theoretical roof reinforcement design methods is the inability to derive accurate and quantitative information about the roof rock condition and the action of reinforcement at various excavation stages. To obtain the information required to assess roof rock stability, detailed monitoring of the in-situ behaviour of reinforcement and roof strata is required. Reliable instru- mentation and techniques have been developed for use in underground coal mines to identify the geometry and magnitude of displacements occurring in roof rock and the forces generated in reinforcement. The use of such instrumentation allows an accurate assessment of the in-situ capability of reinforcement and the mode of reinforcing action developed. In-situ monitoring can supply data required for the practical design of reinforce- ment and assess the potential stability of current designs. The use of such data together with mine wide appraisal of rock and stressfield considerations, can allow roof reinforcement to be designed on the basis of a predicted roof Response.

A series of field experiments investigated the perfonnance of fine mesh curtain screens which were used to suppress coal dust in a transport roadway of a New South Wales colliery. Four types of screens were tested under dry and wet conditions. The screen materials consisted of flyscreen and garden "shadecloth" with single and double membranes of both materials. Personal dust samplers coupled to dust cyclones and filtration cassettes were used to collect the respirable and total components of dusts respectively. The procedure used for locating the samplers upstream and downstream of the screen was based on the roadway air velocity profiles. The number and configuration of the water sprays impinging onto these screens had significant influence on the results. The study showed that wet double layered flyscreen is the most effective of the four configurations tested.

Separation of geochemical anomalies from background is an important and essential issue in the exploration of mineral deposits. Statistical methods are used to separation of anomaly from background. Fractal/multifractal and singularity methods are very suitable for the separation of weak anomalies. For interpolation, various methods could be used such as most distance-weighting methods, kriging, spline interpolation, interpolating polynomials, and finite difference methods. This paper addressed application of multifractal techniques together with finite difference procedure to detect the anomalous regions. Fractal models such as concentration–area, spectrum–area, and singularity index model were selected to identify Pb–Zn anomalies. In this research, 170 samples from 33 boreholes were taken in the Haft-Savaran area and analyzed for determination of Pb–Zn anomaly. Singularity method was a suitable method for separating Pb and Zn anomalies. Also, the results showed that the geochemical anomaly has occurred along NE–SW trend and is consistent with the sulfide mineralization process and the faults of the region.

Demonstrate the technical feasibility of using nontraditional, low-rank, coal-based fuels and new coal-based technologies for mineral and metallurgical applications. Approach A cooperative research effort was initiated between the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of Energy and the minerals industry to extend the application of the fixed-bed gasification process to low-rank Western coals. The research effort enabled cooperators to gain operating experience in the use of hot, raw producer gas for iron ore pellet induration and other high-temperature mineral processes. Researchers were able to gather data regarding the fundamental engineering aspects of the fixed-bed process and gas cleanup for a wide range of solid fuel properties. Applying Fixed-Bed Gasification As a prerequisite to gathering the data needed for the study, the Bureau of Mines designed and installed, at one of its laboratories, a 6.5-ft-diam. single stage, fixed-bed, air-blown atmospheric pressure gasifier. The gasifier was coupled with a hot, raw gas combustion system and iron ore pellet in. duration kiln. The gasifier is rated at 1.5 ton/h capacity of bituminous coal.

Twelve years ago, Jeffrey Mining Machinery Division of Dresser Industries Inc. developed the 120H HELIMINER. This machine was the world's first fixed-drum continuous miner and soon became the standard among manufacturers of continuous miners throughout the mining machinery industry. This paper will first outline a brief history of continuous miner development, then discuss significant parameters which are essential to a successful continuous miner design, and finally describe a number of specific applications of Jeffrey continuous miners in a variety of materials, such as coal, potash, iron ore, and trona, around the world.

"This is a report on the combined application of ""long-chain"" flocculants and classifier cyclones in the field of slimes treatment, with emphasis on the simultaneous thickening and clarifying of industrial effluents, at low cost. The principle of the process described below involves: (1) the formation of small floes of relatively great strength, by sequential dispersion and conditioning, with average floe size of about 1501 microns; (2) the floes being of sufficient strength to withstand the shearing forces operating within a cyclone and consequently behaving as solid particles with an equivalent diameter (Stokes) that exceeds the size cutpoint of the classifier cyclone; (3) the removal of flocculated solids by means of a classifier cyclone the size cutpoint of which permits effective separation of these solids from the water. Results of test work to date indicate that a broader use of cyclones in industry is possible with the above types of flocculants because the submicron particles and colloidal material are readily collected and clear water is produced, with the attendant advantages of compact construction and low cost that are characteristic of centrifugal separation. The process generally permits classifier cyclones of medium throughput capacity (e.g. 12-in. diam.) to be used for clarifying effluents that contain minus 10-micron particles."

As market conditions become more competitive, U.S. coal producers are faced with the increasing need to find methods of lowering production costs in their operations. One area worthy of investigation is the additional recovery of fine coal that is normally discarded in the preparation plant waste stream. United Coal Company is currently assessing the capability of the Deister Flotaire, a new application of a column flotation cell, to recover additional, saleable coal from preparation plant waste. This paper presents the technical data obtained to date. Work with a 0.76 m (30 inch) diameter cell installed in a plant shows considerable coal recovery is possible from a nominal 0.595 run (28 mesh) X 0 refuse stream.

Concentrates produced from MnO2 and Fe203 ore fines have been targeted as potential feedstocks for direct metallurgical processing. Prereduction of pyrolusite-rich Mn02 sands to MnO has been investigated in batch and continuous experimental bubbling fluidised beds using CO-H2 reducing gas mixtures. This process has been found to produce a high grade feedstock suitable for smelting to ferroalloys or acid digestion for chemicals production. Similarly, production of highly metallised direct reduced iron (DRI) from hematite ore fines has also been investigated in batch bubbling bed reactors. Programs to characterise the reduction kinetics, fluidisation behaviour and defluidisation phenomena for both feedstocks are currently in progress to enable optimum process conditions to be determined.

Ingress of air into the longwall goaf environment needs to be managed appropriately to reduce the risk of creating a spontaneous combustion event. The maingate goaf edge is an area of particular concern in this respect, as air often penetrates for some distance into the goaf along this region inbye of the longwall face. Since the flow rate in this part of the goaf is also quite low, an opportunity exists to disrupt the air pathway by implementing a barrier to the airflow. Previous attempts using plugs made from an assortment of materials have resulted in varying degrees of success. More recently, Narrabri Coal Operations (NCO) has introduced the use of a chemical foam that is mixed with nitrogen to produce a standing barrier with the consistency of shaving cream. The implementation of this practice has consistently proven to be very effective for reducing the oxygen concentration along the maingate goaf edge by systematically retreating the foaming unit with the longwall. This paper presents how the foam is applied in the underground goaf environment to prevent oxygen ingress and uses results from gas monitoring to confirm the foam effectiveness.

For a given flotation system, the rate-controlling step in fine coal flotation can be the attachment of bubble to the fine coal particles. The probability of attachment depends upon the surface characteristics and the collector adsorption on the coal particle surfaces. Thus, to further improve the flotation rate and selectivity is to alter the distribution of hydrophobicity on coal particles efficiently by applying the effective means of collector dispersion. In order to enhance the combustible recovery and selectivity of fine coal flotation, and lower the amount of collector used in the fine coal flotation processes, four modes collector dispersion/addition techniques are tested. They are direct liquid addition in pulp (mechanical agitation), ultrasonic energy dispersed collector into pulp, atomized collector into pulp and gasified collector transported by air and formation of collector-air bubbles in pulp. The effect of four collector dispersion/addition methods on the floatability of -600 µ m (-30 mesh US sieve) coal samples from four ranks of coals were studied. The ultrasonic energy dispersed collector and atomized collector flotation processes enhance flotation yield and most significantly improve the kinetics of fine coal flotation. The gasified flotation process can increase the selectivity of separation and decrease the collector consumption due to starvation flotation is achieved in this process. The flotation efficiency of gasified collector process is as high as that of conventional flotation. It is because that the effect of the decrease in the combustible recovery is offset by the increase of selectivity. In addition to flotation experiments, induction times of bubble attachment to the bed of fine coal particles for four ranks of coals are measured.

A number of challenges face platinum concentrator plant operators. These challenges include the increase in operating costs, the increase in smelter cost for the processing of concentrate, the shortage and cost of power, and the tightening of specifications on concentrate quality by the toll-smelting operations. Over the years the focus has moved from extracting the platinum group metals (PGM) from the Merensky Reef to the UG2 reef. This has a number of advantages, including the higher ?basket price? for UG2 concentrate, reduced mining cost per unit volume as a result of the higher density of UG2, and the reduction in overall concentrate tonnage to be smelted. In many cases the Merensky ore has been fully exploited and it makes sense for the focus to shift to the UG2 ore that can be accessed through the Merensky shaft infrastructure. The presence of relatively high levels of chromite in UG2 concentrate is, however, a major disadvantage due to the problems associated with smelting such a concentrate in conventional submerged arc furnaces. In addition to increasing the specification on the minimum PGM grade of concentrates, smelters have had to impose strict specifications on the levels of chromite in the concentrate. The threat of high penalties has forced concentrators to change their modus operandi, often resulting in a significant loss in recovery. The final concentrate grades and PGM recoveries are shown to vary significantly throughout the industry. The reasons for this include varying ore mineralogy and different operating philosophies. This would therefore imply that the opportunity exists to optimize the operations by considering fundamental aspects such as the PGM mineralogy and the application of appropriate technologies. By returning to the fundamentals of flotation and applying the findings of detailed process reviews, it has been possible to increase the concentrate PGM grade, reduce the concentrate chromite grade, and in some cases increase the recovery of PGM to concentrate. This paper presents case studies where this approach has been used to successfully optimize concentrator performance, resulting in lower operating cost and higher PGM production. Researchers at the U. S. Bureau of Mines have developed a control algorithm to efficiently manipulate chaotic systems. The control, based on both fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms, prescribes actions that drive the chaotic system to acceptable regions of state space. The use of fuzzy logic enables a person who has limited experience with a chaotic system to establish a set of rules for manipulating the problem environment, and a set of membership functions that define terms used in the rule-set. Genetic algorithms are search algorithms based on natural genetics, and are used in the control algorithm to select membership functions that provide for a suitable level of control. The Bureau-developed algorithm controls the computer simulation of a ball bouncing on an oscillating table, a system that exhibits chaotic behavior.

Many underground instabilities, such as excessive shield loading and roof falls, occur at longwall faces causing safety problems and production losses. Such instability problems are directly related to roof conditions which can be categorized using geological information. . However, most geologic information describing anomalies and variations of immediate and main roofs are not available before mining resulting in unexpected problems in a longwall face. It is apparent that the evaluation of these geologic anomalies provides a great benefit for longwall stability. The purpose of this study is to evaluate roof categories associated with geological anomalies employing fuzzy set theory. The evaluation is based on real-time monitoring information, such as shield leg pressure, developing load on shields, intervals of periodic weighting, and the ratio of developing loads during periodic to normal times. This paper introduces the application of fuzzy set theory for characterizing roof conditions and evaluating of roof similarities.

Longwall faces can move at high advancing rates, but many geological variations can cause unexpected instabilities and production losses. The rapid movement makes it necessary to evaluate different geologic conditions in the rock mass as fast as possible to assess their effects on the longwall face and shields. It is believed that prompt awareness of geologic conditions is the key to preventing instability at a longwall face. This paper introduces the application of fuzzy set theory for characterizing and evaluating roof conditions. Real-time monitored data coupled with fuzzy set analysis provides valuable information, such as shield leg pressure, developing load on shields, intervals of periodic weighting and the ratio of developing loads during periodic to normal times.
