An experimental study on interparticle breakage of three iron ores was carried out by compressive stressing of particle-bed in a piston-die device. The feeds to the particle-bed stressing were five narrow size fractions in the size range of 0.2~3.2 mm respectively and a wide size fraction of 0/4.0 mm. The pressures applied were in the range between 30 and 360 MPa. The results show that the energy absorption of the particle bed increases linearly with the pressure; the increase of the product fineness with the pressure declines as the pressure goes up; and the product size distributions resulting from interparticle breakage of different narrow size fractions have no self-similarity. Using data obtained from the piston-die compressive stressing test, the suitability of a previously-developed material-characterization model for interparticle breakage was verified for these ores. It is shown that the particle-bed compression test conducted with piston-die device in lab-scale may provide a cost-effective way of studying and modelling size-reduction of ore materials by interparticle breakage.

All high stopes and pillars in Anqing Copper Mine were extracted by use of large-diameter longhole mining method. The height of stopes was 120 m. The forced mining was the leading concept that the safe and efficient operation was carried out in this mine, while the mining production was faced with the major technical problems on the stability of both primary ore pillars produced in the first-step stoping of stopes and the cemented fillbody on two sides of stope in the second-step stopping of pillars. Starting with mining technology, the authors emphatically describe the test results obtained in Anqing Copper Mine and make an approach to the deployment prospects and development trend of large-diameter longhole mining technology in China underground metal mines.

This study is concerned with the electric potential induced by deformation, fracturing and sliding of non-piezoelectric geomaterials. In experiments, the acoustic emissions together with electric potential measurements were also measured in order to see how the so-called seismic electric signals are associated with new fracture occurrence and propagation and sliding in case of existing discontinuities. The outcomes of this experimental study may explain why such electric potential variations may occur during the fracturing and sliding of non-piezoelectric geomaterials. On the basis of these outcomes, their possible implications in geo-engineering and geo-science are discussed. Ce travail concerne 1e potentiel électrique produit par la déformation, 1a fracture ou le glissement du matériel géologique non-piézoélectrique. Aux expérimentations, on a mesuré 1es émissions acoustiques avec le potentiel électrique afin de constater la relation entre les phénomènes de glissement ou de formation et de propagation de nouvelles fractures le long des discontinuités existantes. Les résultats de ce travail expérimental expliquent pourquoi de telles variations de potentiel electrique se produisent durant le glissement ou la fracture du matériel non-piézoélectrique. Sur la base de ces résultats, on a discuté de leurs éventuelles implications dans les domaines de 1a géologie et de 1a géo-ingénierie. Diese Studie befasst sich mit dem elektrischen Potential das durch die Deformation, Bruchbildung und Gleiten von nicht-piezoelektrischen Geomaterialien induziert wird. In Experimenten wurden die akustischen Emissionen zusammen mit elektrischen Potentialmessungen gemessen, um zu sehen, wie die so genannten seismischen elektrischen Signale mit neuer Bruchbildung und Ausbreitung sowie Gleiten im Falle von vorhandenen Diskontinuitäten verbunden sind. Die Ergebnisse dieser experimentellen Untersuchungen könnten erklären warum elektrische Potential Schwankungen während der Bruchbildung und dem Gleiten von nicht-piezoelektrischen Geomaterialien entstehen. Auf der Basis dieser Ergebnisse, wurden ihre möglichen Implikationen in Geoingenieurwissenschaften behandelt.

In spherical agglomeration in water, the pattern of the growth behaviour of agglomerates is essentially determined by the surface chemical properties of the particles and the oil-water interface. When particles are suitably hydrophobic and oil-water interfacial tension is not too low under an adequate condition for agglomeration, large agglomerates are formed in the initial stage and micro- agglomerates do not appear. When particles are poorly wetted by oil and the interfacial tension is low, initially micro-agglomerates are formed and, after certain aging time, they grow to large agglomerates in a relatively short time without formation of intermediate size agglomerates. Under adequate conditions, the amount of oil and power input do not produce any remarkable effect on the pattern of growth.

A description is given of an experimental ventilation control system designed, built, and tested by WVU under United States Bureau of Mines sponsorship. A description is given of the control, system used and the mine-wide microcomputer-based ventilation monitoring system used with it. Test results of experiments conducted with this system at Eastern Associated Coal Corporation's Federal No. 2 underground coal mine are presented. In addition, a brief description is given of a new microprocessor based system presently being tested.

The title of Randy's talk is "An Expert Control System for Phosphate Beneficiation." RANDY YNCHAUSTI: System integration. How does the systems integrator survive when caught between plant engineers, plant management, and third-party engineering firms, and stay within the budget of the corporate goals? I'm not sure that anyone knows how to do all of that on one project. Results are critical when we talk about how systems integrators work with operating people, how the operating people want systems integrators to work with them, and how both groups work together so that at the end of a project, you have been provided with solutions that meet your needs and solve your problems at a fair price. How does the integrator's role change when working with different types of professionals, such as plant managers, plant engineers, engineering firms, or other system integrators? Finally, what is the dynamics of people working with machines and providing services and solving needs? The average number of employees per pound of copper processed has decreased significantly during the past 15 years. I would dare to generalize and say that the average number of employees per whatever unit of measure we have in whatever industry we work in has decreased over the last 15 years. From a system integrator's perspective, there are some clients who lack a bit of internal expertise as corporate downsizing occurs, and that's one reason why we go out to system integrators or third-party vendors and buy things from them to solve our problems. Downsizing really amounts to savings, but more than that, I think Brian expressed this and I agree with him, it also amounts to a cost. Unfortunately, most of us count the savings and none of us count the cost in that approach. It's easy to count the savings, which is one reason why we count it so quickly. Maybe that also accounts for why we set our pencils down so quickly after we get that dollar value. Maybe we should pick that pencil up every once in awhile and refigure the expense, the cost to us, and determine what we're going to pay during the next year or two or three in losing that expense, or that staff. A multi-layer feed-forward neural network was trained (using the error back-propagation algorithm) to learn a subset of rules designed to stabilise the performances of the copper flotation section of a complex sulphide processing plant and then tested in order to evaluate its expert performances. Two types of neural networks were compared: the classical ones, fully connected between one layer and the adjacents (with different architectures), and entropy networks, partially connected and generated according to a methodology that simplifies its building up. The advantages and drawbacks of both were analysed and compared with classic (rule based) expert systems.

Rock engineering risk is defined in this paper as a function of the potential ground motion; the vulnerability of the workplace; exposure of people; and a general term – quality of information. The paper describes the development of prototype software that is a combination between an expert system approach for determining overall risk assessment, a risk control recommendation and a basic GIS (Graphic Information System) approach for graphically overlying input parameters and the output risk. The expert system uses a Bayesian probabilistic approach to combine various workplace-related information, a quantified seismological environment and the exposure of underground staff to provide an overall RE risk rating. The risk assessment is dynamic in that it is recalculated each time that any of the input parameters change, for example each time a seismic event is recorded in the area of interest. The code was tested on a data set from Savuka Gold. As risk assessment is not an absolute prediction of a specific outcome, it is therefore not possible to relate to individual case studies and the reliability of this method would only be determined after an extensive period of use with appropiate back-analysis. L’étude présente décrit le développement d’un logiciel prototype qui est une combinaison entre une démarche de système expert pour déterminer une évaluation générale du risque, une recommandation pour le contrôle du risque, et une démarche de SIG (Système d’Information Géographique) pour superposer graphiquement les paramètres d’entrée et le risque de sortie. Le système expert utilise une méthode de probabilité bayésienne pour combiner des informations variées sur le lieu de travail, des données quantifiées sur l’environnement sismique, et l’exposition du personnel travaillant sous terre, pour finalement produire un classement général de risque minier (RE). "The objective of this expert system application in a copper-zinc concentrator, is to increase the availability of assay data through substitution for erroneous data. The assay data is used by the Operations personnel and automatic process control strategies to control flotation circuit performance. Two online X-ray fluorescence analysis systems analyze 24 streams across four divisions to provide the required data. Data availability of individual streams average 90% while the resulting circuit availabilities are 70%. The unavailability of correct data results from mechanical, X-ray or process problems. The erroneous data can be identified by process experts using knowledge relating stream interdependencies and historical process behaviour. An expert system was devised to provide real time identification of erroneous data and substitute for that data with the ultimate aim of improving metallurgical response by both the operator and automatic control systems.The paper discusses the early development work and architecture of the knowledge base designed using Neuron Data's expert shell NEXPERT.INTRODUCTIONThis paper describes the early development of an expert system (ES) prototype at the Kidd Creek concentrator. The project is a joint undertaking of the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Limited and CANMET. Kidd Creek entered into the project to apply heuristic rules to the XRF assay data to improve the metallurgical control of the flotation process by increasing availability of analysis data. This project provided a problem of suitable size and future expandability while making use of a wide base of in-house expertise and experience. Another important benefit is the introduction of expert system technology to the site providing tools and experience for future system selection and technology application. CANMET has an on-going interest in assessing various aspects of ES technology (hardware, software, knowledge engineering, integration) while addressing problems in process operations that could most readily benefit from the technique. CANMET's role in the project was to provide project assistance, financial support, substitution algorithm assistance and software for data substitution. The expert system for coal preparation plant design mainly solves the crux--separation flowsheet design and optimization of product structure. There are twelve basic flowsheets available in the system which are representative of financial plants. The system can select better flowsheets automatically according to the property of feed and scale of plant. Then, it can choose the best flowsheet and product model from the better flowsheets through analysis and optimum calculation. The expert system is made up in Turbo Pascal 6.0 and consists of three sub-systems: Lump and grain coal system, coal slimes processing system, and raw coal system. Several representation methods, such as production rule, procedure, and object-oriented programming, are used to express the expert's knowledge in the system. To decide the optimum product structure, Zangwill's method is used to make an advance product model. The expert system has the performance of interpretation strategy, by 'tracer" technology and pre-arrangement text, and of learning new expert's knowledge.

Wastewaters generated during the extraction of gold from the ore can contain a variety of contaminants such as cyanide, heavy metals and arsenic. Proper management of these wastewaters is therefore necessary to minimize the negative impact of gold mining and milling operations on the environment. The Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC),located in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, has been involved in several studies related to the evaluation of various effluent treatment technologies which are relevant to the treatment and proper management of gold mill effluents. These studies have included bench and pilot scale tests, and the evaluation offull-scale systems. Furthermore, the WTC staff developed protocols for cyanide analysis in gold mill effluents, and a mathematical model for predicting the degradation of cyanide in tailings ponds. The information generated by the WTC staff has been referenced in several reports and papers published over the last ten years (Schmidt et.al. 1982, Simovic & Snodgrass 1989, Whittle et.al. 1989, Zaidi et.al. 1989, Zaidi et.al. 1991). Recently, the WTC has started to develop a micro­computer based expert system for use by decision makers in the gold mining industry and relevant government agencies who are involved in process design, process evaluation, costing, evaluation of the best practicable technology, approval of suggested effluent management systems, and so on. The problems experienced with longwall mining machinery motivate the development of an expert system for fault diagnosis. The techniques of knowledge representation, database, knowledge base and inference engine guide the selection of the expert systems and languages -"Turbo Prolog"- as exemplified in the case study of hydraulic support. The aim is to hasten future development of a fault diagnosis system and the design of a system to locate and determine the causes of failure of longwall machinery. The system would use its stored case history and other information to make fault diagnoses and suggest appropriate remedies. Consequently down-time would be reduced and production and profitability should increase.

Mining engineers in charge of open pit mine planning very often face decision making situations dealing with the selection of the most economical method for the removal of overburden. Ripping versus conventional drilling and blasting are the options considered. The choice of a particular overburden removal method depends upon the physic-mechanical properties of the overburden material as well as the various cost factors involved in the process. The analysis of techno-economical factors involved in different methods of overburden removal needs detailed study and investigation by a technical expert. But the expert system "Fragmentation System Design" has been created in a way such that it will help and expedite the decision making process relating to overburden removal in surface mines. Furthermore, this expert system can be used for detailed design aspects of overburden removal in open pit mines.

The purpose of this paper is to develop an expert system for hydraulic excavator and truck selection in surface mining. Hydraulic excavators and trucks are finding increasing applications in mining operations. Hydraulic excavators are extensively used especially when bringing electricity to rural areas is difficult and for small-scale mining. This paper describes an expert system, which selects the optimum hydraulic excavator truck configuration such that unit production cost is minimized and technical constraints such as geological, geotechnical and mining constraints are satisfied. The system has four modules: user interface, rules and an methods, databases and output module. The expert system in this study is developed within KappaPC shell. It supports object-orientated technology for the MS Windows environment. The software provides a very useful tool to practitioners, saving time and cost. Equipment selection is a recurring and expensive problem of mine planning and often involves interdisciplinary experts from different fields. It is very difficult and expensive to bring together all these experts. The capabilities of the expert system developed are illustrated in the paper. The software overcomes the difficulties of selecting the proper equipment for surface mining operations, which is very important, and results in substantial savings. Equipment databases for hydraulic excavators with 15-59 yd3 capacities and trucks with 35-360 tons are constructed and these databases are used to select the proper configuration. "The development process of Metal Resources Technical and Economic Evaluation Expert System (MRTEEES) is introduced in the aspects of requirements analysis, design of the expert system, main functions of the expert system and features of the expert system. The system is based on C/B/S mixed mode and uses ASP.NET technology with .Net Framework being chosen as the development platform and metal resources database providing data support at the bottom layer. The system is an auxiliary management system for metal resources technical and economic evaluation and has the basic functions of auxiliary decision analysis, metal resources database management, data management and comprehensive query. Technical and economic evaluation model can be set up by users independently according to at which stage a project is, mainly including exploration stage, development stage and production stage, and according to the mining methods, for example underground mining, surface mining and in-situ leaching mining. Then, the technical and economic evaluation parameters can be generated. By inputting the value of each parameter in a simple and convenient way, the evaluation results can be directly calculated out and shown in the form of diagrams among others, and feasibility evaluation report can also be automatically generated, making the technical and economic evaluation process accurate and efficient. As the system can achieve the functions of scenario analysis, sensitivity analysis, shareholder’s returns analysis, horizontal comparison of different projects, it can improve the ability of project senior decision makers for rapid response to the rival and meet the demand of pricing negotiations. IntroductionWith the arrival of a new round of industrialization upsurge in both developing and developed countries, growth of demand for metal resources is entering a new stage. Population involved in the new industrialized countries is about four times that of all previous industrialized countries, implying resource consumption increases dramatically both in speed and in quantity. It is a must to seize the strategic opportunity of developing and utilizing metal resources around the world to lay abundant resource base for national industrialization. Objectively speaking, global configuration of metal resources is an inevitable tend. Presently, many issues, for example, resources exploration, mining, merge of mining companies, metal trades, mining financing, etc., generally show the feature of globalization. For the reality that competition for metal resources is becoming fiercer, industry standards of mineral resources will undoubtedly be improved. Occupying large scale mineral resources with high grade and developing them with low cost is the base for the survival of mining companies and metal resources merchants. With the growing demand of global investment in mineral resources exploration, which is at the upstream of the industry chain, geological exploration industry is promising. Globally building market relationships for mineral resources exploration companies is key to their sustainable development. Developing large and super-large deposit with low cost is also an important approach to enhancing core competence of a country or an enterprise. Mining companies around the world are rushing to purchase mineral resources globally. However, in different countries, economic, financial and tax systems for mineral resources vary greatly, and mining and processing techniques, technical parameters and equipment selection also change a lot. There are 3 steps in the process of forming a mine ventilation system, (1) selecting a reasonable ventilation pattern (included pit shaft arrangement); (2) optimizing of the ventilation network and (3) computing and outputting the flow splitting results of the network with the optimal ventilating equipments selected. In the past, the first step was relied on artificial decision-making. In order to design a common ventilation system, some ventilation experts were needed to participate or do some examinations. Even so, the design made was reasonable only for those experts. If there is a mistake in the first step, then even the followed 2 steps are best done, the losses are very difficult to retrieve. So that, the first step is very important. The development of expert systems provided an efficient means and tool for all engineering fields. This paper presents an expert system of selecting mine ventilation pattern and pit shaft arrangement. After testing many times, it is shown that the system can perform the first step of designing a mine ventilation system, and can help the experts doing their study works more efficiently.

A longwall-based coal mine in Australia, referred to in this paper as AusMine Colliery, experienced windblasts resulting from goaf falls. Windblasts were the cause of serious injuries and threatened the continued operation of the mine. A microseismic early warning system was installed and a significant success rate in providing early warning of large roof instability resulting in high velocity windblasts, has been achieved. Early warning of goafing is accepted as an operational tool on the mine. Severe demands are placed on the operator in terms of 'real time' interpretation. The development of an expert system allowed for a probabilistic approach to achieve automatic alarms. This paper will quantify the success, failure and false alarm rates achieved by manual operation and automatic expert system-based decisions making, respectively.

"The operation of flotation circuits is often regarded as a combination of art and science. Expert systems offer a method by which the art may be captured and supervisory control of flotation circuits fully realized. Operating knowledge, the art, can be consistently employed to enhance regulatory control through the judicious application of an expert system. Using an expert system, a supervisory control routine was developed, and success- fully implemented, in the copper flotation circuit at Brenda Mines Ltd.The expert system ran in conjunction with regulatory PI controllers on a personal computer. The expert system received assays via an on-stream analyzer and adjusted regulatory loop set points as required in real-time. From its commissioning in November, 1989, to the end of the mine 's operation in June, 1990, it was enthusiastically embraced by the operators and attained operating levels superior to those achievable manually.IntroductionExpert system (ES) software springs from research into artificial intelligence and is currently making significant inroads into business and industry. ES proponents make many attractive claims; they are a means of capturing the knowledge of experts and they can be programmed by non-programmers. To date, most uses of this software in the process industry are in off-line applications, meaning that the applications are not tied directly to operating (on-line) environments. Moreover, in on-line environments, they are typically employed as advisors and only suggest changes. Human operators are required to close-the-loop to the process. Yet, an ES should be applicable to operating environments and, if the claims of the proponents are valid, should also be better than existing tools. As an intelligent controller an ES must use the knowledge of experienced operators, apply it directly to a process and do this without the intervention of human operators. On-line applications have been successfully employed in the closed loop control of SAG circuits (Herbst et al., 1989) and flotation circuits (Hales, 1989). Harris and Kosick (1988)detail an implementation for flotation control at the Polaris Mine."
