Las razones de la presencia de este metaloide están asociadas a la mineralogía propia del país. En este manuscrito se presentan los resultados de pruebas a escala industrial realizados en una compañía minera ubicada en el distrito de Canarias, provincia de Víctor Fajardo, departamento de Ayacucho.

ON Oct. 27, 1941, the Sanitary Water Board of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania called a meeting of the representatives of the coal operators in the Schuylkill River Basin, and frankly suggested to the operators that they "clean up their house" before someone else came in and did it for them; that they should not emulate the railroads with their "public be damned" policy and its fateful results. It had been four years since the passage of the antipollution law of 1937, a law which exempted silt from collieries until such time as a practical method existed for the removal of their water polluting properties. It had been fifteen long years since Sisler, Frazer and Ashmead concluded that 900 million tons of culm and silt had been deposited in Pennsylvania's streams in the process of preparing five and a half billion tons of anthracite for the world's consumers. Fine coal was being "mined" in the streams by "washeries" and river dredges downstream from the collieries, and silt banks no longer held back the endless black stream entering the Schuylkill at the rate of 350,000 tons per month. The coal operators were apparently working on the outmoded assumption that each ton of fine coal prepared displaced a ton of larger sized, more profitable coal. The meeting between the Sanitary Water Board and the coal operators signaled the beginning of the end of Pennsylvania's pollution problems. As a result a committee was formed at that meeting by the operators to find out what conditions were at each colliery. The Bureau assisted in the indication of methods of measurement and sampling and in the development of forms for reporting the needed data. One large producer had its chief engineer supervise the gathering of the information concerning the quantity of waste waters, the amount and sieve analyses of the waste solids, and the existing means for retaining

La méthode d?exploitation traditionnelle de la mine est le chantier chambre-magasin. Cependant, lors de l?exploitation d?un chantier, nous avons été confrontés à un problème de soutirage. Le minerai abattu est resté accroché à l?intérieur du chantier ce qui nous obligea à soutirer environ 200 wagons, représentant 700 tonnes. Suite à l?ampleur de la situation, nous avons décidé de finir l?exploitation du chantier par la méthode sous-niveau long trou retraité. Cette première expérience de récupération de piliers ayant été réalisée avec succès, nous avons décidé de continuer avec deux autres récupérations de piliers afin de pouvoir augmenter notre expertise autant au niveau technique qu?au niveau économique.

"Modern history is full of breakthroughs in technology, all striving to increase productivity and efficiency. What are the elements that should be taken into consideration in the design and implementation of modern automation systems in a control room? Both industry and international standards are now demanding that Human Factors be considered as part of the design of control rooms to maximize efficiency and minimize the potential of human error which can lead to downtime and a loss of profit as a result of interruptions in production. As the current workforce ages and the younger generation matures, this is also becoming a key element when planning a control room. New standards are helping to address some of these challenges that are facing the mining industry today. With an increased focus on the operator, an intelligent and ergonomic workspace can both mitigate risk and optimize production. Optimization is money. We will examine how to analyze and implement innovative control room planning to maximize mineral processing production and minimize risks that can impact overall production and profit.INTRODUCTIONIn this day and age, optimization of production in an industrial environment is becoming more and more of a challenge. With ever changing technology as well as other external factors, this can be especially daunting. There are several key elements that may not be immediately obvious when planning a control room design or renovation, most notably the role of the human in this environment. Fatigue, stress, distraction, reaction times and situational awareness are all critical in a 24/7 environment. With the growing need to include human factors when considering and designing an optimal work and production environment, it is becoming even more important to design a control room that can address as many of today’s challenges as possible.The standard definition of the word “optimization” is “an act, process or methodology of making something (as a design, system, or decision) as fully perfect, functional or effective as possible.” (www.merriam-webster.com). If we apply this to business, what it really means is finding the most cost effective way to achieve the highest level of performance while considering constraints, both external and internal, by maximizing the desired factors and minimizing undesired ones. Sometimes, however, we can get caught up in the day to day processes, without taking a moment to step back and objectively review what it is we need to achieve, and more importantly, the steps that can facilitate our success."

Conveyors are a highly effective means of transporting material over long distances. Recently there has been a trend toward long conveyor systems with high capacity single flights. These conveyor systems are an efficient alternative to costly truck fleets. Also with deeper mines, the use of diesel driven trucks becomes more difficult. Another trend is in underground mining, where conveyors are an efficient alternative to drift hoists or dedicated rail systems.

The Alabama By-Products Corp. is an entirely independent Alabama enterprise. Organization of the company stemmed from the consolidation of three important properties in the Birmingham District and a by-product coke plant at Tarrant, Ala. In 1924 ABC was merged with the Pratt Consolidated Coal Co. This merger greatly extended the company's holdings of valuable coal lands in Walker and Jefferson Counties.

The company was formed in 1926 to exploit tin bearing veins adjacent to Aberfoyle Creek in north-east Tasmania. In 1928 a 923ft tunnel was driven to explore and develop the mine 150ft below surface. This put the company on a path to become Australia's second largest tin producer by the late 1960's. Recently, Aberfoyle Resources Limited completed a 1.1km tunnel to access the major Hellyer zinc, silver, lead orebody at 300m depth. Production at 1 million tonnes a year is likely, and will make the company a significant world supplier of zinc by the late 1980's. The intervening 20 year history of survival and diversification illustrates principles of mineral exploration which proved valid in the Australian context. The objective of exploration should be to develop mines which can survive rigorous competition and downturns in commodity prices. Such mines will be based on orebodies with many of the following characteristics described by Richards (1986).

Corte, furação e texturização são alguns dos processos que utilizam laser na produção industrial comercial. São processos bem estabelecidos, que contam com equipamentos dedicados e metodologias bem estabelecidas. Apesar de eficientes e de certa precisão, são processos térmicos com inconvenientes intrínsecos como rebarbas, material ressolidificado, zona afetada pelo calor e certa imprecisão dimensional. A utilização de pulsos laser ultracurtos, de largura temporal da ordem de algumas dezenas de femtossegundos torna possível a realização destes processos sem a produção de calor, como no caso de dielétricos, ou com geração desprezível de calor para o caso de metais. Neste trabalho, utilizou-se o aço AISI 1045 para o estudo da interação com pulsos laser de femtosegundos, com o intuito de obter as condições de processo em que a produção de calor seja minimizada ou até mesmo eliminada. Os parâmetros de processo variados foram a largura temporal dos pulsos laser, 25, 87 e 124 fs, a densidade de potência e o número de pulsos sobrepostos. A técnica D-Scan foi utilizada para a determinação dos limiares de ablação em função deste número de pulsos sobrepostos. Foram analisadas a microestrutura das regiões vizinhas à região ablacionada, com o intuito de identificar as possíveis transformações de fase que poderiam estar correlacionadas à produção de calor pelo processo. Condições de mínima produção de calor foram obtidas com minimização de produção de rebarbas e de material ressolidificado.

Devido à possibilidade de se remover quantidades muito pequenas de material de cada vez, a ablação seletiva por laser tem se mostrado um método muito eficaz para remoção de finas camadas de materiais depositados sobre um substrato. Neste trabalho, um laser de femtossegundo foi utilizado para remoção de um filme fino de nitreto de titânio (TiN) depositado sobre um substrato de carboneto de tungstênio (WC), configuração comum em pastilhas de usinagem mecânica, objetivando fornecer um método eficiente para tal processo. Os limiares de ablação do filme e do substrato foram determinados, evidenciando a problemática do trabalho, remover um filme com limiar maior que o substrato. Um sistema de controle de espectrometria de emissão atômica induzida por laser (LIBS) foi testada, com a intenção de controlar em tempo real, a espécie do material ablacionado, mostrando-se muito eficiente. Os parâmetros do laser bem como da varredura de usinagem ainda estão sendo testados para definir a viabilidade do processo.

Dentre as diversas técnicas de Analítica Preditiva disponíveis, algumas se destacam pela sua capacidade de facilmente aprenderem o comportamento dos ativos a partir dos dados históricos, assim como monitorarem pequenos desvios que estejam relacionados aos mecanismos de falhas de interesse. O presente trabalho apresenta como estender uma das técnicas de Inteligência Artificial para Modelamento Baseado em Similaridade para aplicação em ativos que possuem uma dinâmica rápida de funcionamento ou de operação para seus estados estacionários. São demonstrados os resultados dessa abordagem em aplicações práticas que exemplificam como aumentar o resultado proporcionado por essa técnica na obtenção de ganhos para o desempenho dos ativos e resultados do negócio.

El presente texto aborda el aspecto termodinámico del sistema de lixiviación -en tanto predice los fenómenos que ocurren en el interior de la pila para luego continuar con el análisis del mecanismo cinético. La metodología aplicada en cuanto a los mecanismos de lixiviación, difiere de otros trabajos porque aquí se considera los tres mecanismos por separado (óxidos, sulfuros secundarios y primarios) basados en el análisis secuencial del cobre. Asímismo la cinética per se obedece las leyes de la termodinámica ergo, cuyo aspecto no puede ser ignorado en un análisis global. En este sentido, se presenta el modelo de desarrollo matemático como una herramienta óptima que controla y predice este proceso del lixiviación por medio de la simulación utilizando la ecuación de continuidad, la cual supone flujo tipo pistón de la fase líquida en el interior de la pila.

ABSTRACT. A retrospective analysis of some geomechanical classifications for rock masses is presented. It is shown that estimates of rock mass strength according to geomechanical classifications developed, e.g., for construction of tunnels and for ore mines can differ very much. Development of specifically oriented classifications for rock masses with certain geomechanical properties is required. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG. Es wurde eine retrospektive Analyse einiger geomechanoschen Klassifikationen von Gesteinsmassiven durchgefuhrt. Es idt aufgezeigt worden, dass die Bes-timmung der Festigkeit des Massivs nach geomechanischen Klassifikationen, die z.B. fur den Bau von Tunnelen und fur Erzbergwerke entwickelt wurden, sich um etliche Male unterscheiden kann. Es ist eine Entwicklung von spezialisierten Klassifikationen fur Gesteinsmassive mit bestimmten geomechanischen Eigenschaften erforderlich. RESUME. Il a ete fait l’analyse retrospective de certaines classifications geomecaniques des massifs de roche. Il a ete montre que les estimations de solidite du massif suivant les classifications geomecaniques etudiees, par exemple, pour la construction des tunnels et pour les puits de minerai peuvent differer en quelques fois. When you think of the state of Maine, you probably think of lobsters or lighthouses. The last thing you would think of is metallic mineral mining, and that is for good reason. According to the Maine Geological Survey?s website, ?no metals have been mined in Maine since 1977.? Moreover, Maine?s metallic mineral mining laws and rules, which were last rewritten in 1991, have effectively made mining in the Pine Tree State impossible. Statutory changes enacted in 2012, however, put Maine on a path to make metallic mineral mining part of the local economy in the near future. History of metallic mineral mining in Maine Currently, Maine is not a metallic mineral mining state, though that has not always been the case. The 1800s saw various mining operations in Maine, including what the Maine Geological Survey calls a ?mining boom? from 1879 to 1882, where mining of iron, silver, copper, lead and zinc expanded rapidly. Mining and mining activity in the more recent past, however, drove the debate before the state legislature when this issue was debated in 2012.

In 1950 the phosphate fertilizer market warranted the design and construction of a new fertilizer plant by Cominco at Kimberley, B.C. The initial rated capacity of the plant was 70,000 tons per year of high- grade ammonium phosphate. The plant was placed on-stream in 1953. One of the major problems in operating the fertilizer plant was the disposal of the gypsum tailings slurry which was a by-product of phosphoric acid manufacture. The original weight of dry tailings produced by the mill was 500 tons per day. This quantity increased over the years until a projected 2200 tpd was selected for the pond design described in this paper. The original gypsum tailing area was located south of the fertilizer plant and adjacent to the St. Mary's River. By 1965 the original disposal area had proven inadequate and Cominco's engineering staff had selected a 500 acre disposal site to the east of the plant.

There is a close relationship between the mining industry, economic growth, and technological and social development. Mining activities benefit all economic agents, but only during a timespan determined by available reserves, primarily driven by internal factors such as production rate, technology and costs, and external factors such as prices determined by the market and taxes and royalties controlled by governments (Gordon and Tilton, 2008; Henckens, 2021; Tapia Cortez et al, 2018). The intense use of Mineral Commodities (MC) needed to maintain the current lifestyle has placed ore depletion as one of the main threats to sustainable economic, social and technological development. However, ore depletion does not only arise due to the finite nature of MC, price fluctuations or technological challenges. It is also triggered by the ‘economic limits of extraction’, determined by the optimisation of financial factors and technical restrictions within the regulatory framework (Henckens, 2021). Most reporting standards – if not all – define ore reserves as ‘the economically mineable part of a Measured and/or Indicated Mineral Resources’ determined by the technical and economic viability of extracting, processing and commercialising MC having the NPV as the fundamental decision – making tool (JORC, 2012; Krzemień et al, 2016). However, is the NVP an ‘economically’ basis index able to capture the complexity of economic phenomena? No, it is not, and it is crucial to define what is economic and financial. Although related, they are different disciplines. Economics studies the behaviour of the different market agents, including human behaviour and policies and explains the factors involved in the scarcity (or surplus) of goods and services. Finance focuses on financial systems and managing funds considering the time, cash available, and risk. It involves banks, loans, investments, and savings and can be considered a small subset of economics (Simon, 1959; Tapia Cortez et al, 2018). Given the economic nature of ore Reserves, endorsed by governments (Figure 1), NPV is an incomplete tool to determine ore Reserves as it limits the problem to simply maximising cash flows instead of optimising the economic benefits for all economic agents. In addition, using the rigid scheme of controlling taxation – unable to adapt to new market or economic conditions and systematically increasing – within the NPV framework only increases the sub-optimisation of ore reserves, mainly due to the systematic taxation rise. Short-term benefits of higher taxes and royalties are unlikely to offset the impacts of reducing exploration and project development in the long-term, which not only boosts ore depletion concerns but also reduces competitiveness, threatening economic and social welfare (Fisher, Cootner and Baily, 1972; Gordon, Bertram and Graedel, 2007; Lilford, 2017; Mardones, Silva and Martínez, 1985; Radetzki, 2009; Rodrik, 1982; Tan, 1987; World Bank, 2000). Holistic methods and collaborative tools, able to dynamically simulate and assess how changes in the technical settings, regulatory framework (taxes and royalties), and financial factors affect the availability of ore reserves and the impact for all economic agents, should be incorporated into the evaluation process to fill the gap.

A requisite corollary of mineral sand mining on North Stradbroake Island (Queensland (Qld), Australia) has been the progressive rehabilitation of post-mined lands for the revegetation of native subtropical Eucalypt communities. Since 2005, rigorous environmental monitoring has been undertaken to verify the annual development of post-rehabilitated sites. From these long-term analyses, a chronosequence of land revegetation (ranging from three to 26 years postrehabilitation) was developed to examine the rehabilitation trajectories of various post-mined sites in relation to proximal undisturbed locations. Here, we identified that some sites may be deviating from the intended natural analogues as evidenced by the opportunistic colonisationand otherwise æinvasiveÆ behaviour of a regionally native species (Black Sheoak - Allocasuarina littoralis), which appear to be displacing the intended Eucalypt varieties. Although it is recognised that the broader data trends correspond to distinct periods of adaptive modifications to the implementation of rehabilitation (ie pre- and post-1995), this analysis focuses on further identifying potential above- and belowground feedback mechanisms underlying these divergent ecological outcomes.CITATION:Audet, P, Gravina, A, Glenn, V, McKenna, P, Vickers, H, Gillespie, M J and Mulligan, D R, 2012. Three water-spray ventilation systems were tested to determine their effectiveness in diluting methane at a room and pillar coal mine face. These systems were: the shrouded nozzle, the spray fan, and the conventional nozzle system that is normally supplied with continuous miners. The testing was carried out in two stages. The air-moving capacities of the nozzles were first evaluated in a duct. The duct tests showed that: (1) the volume of air moved by the nozzle is controlled by the type of nozzle, the space around it, and its location relative to the duct wall; (2) the spray fan nozzles or the shrouded nozzles are both capable of moving air quantities up to 6400 cfm (3.02 m3/s); and (3) when the shroud was removed from around the shrouded nozzle, its bare nozzle moved between 9 and 65 percent more air. In the second stage of testing, a full-scale evaluation of the three systems was conducted. The three spray systems were mounted on a continuous miner which was positioned in an aboveground simulated mine entry. The simulated face tests gave the following results: (1) the standard nozzle system, which is mounted on the front end of the miner, is inadequate for diluting methane; (2) under the best testing conditions (lowest methane emission rate, highest primary ventilation airflow, and closest brattice set back), the slight improvement given by either the shrouded system or the spray fan is the same; and (3) under the worst testing conditions (highest methane emission rate, least primary ventilation airflow, and farthest brattice set back), the spray fan gave superior performance.
