"THE SUBJECT of permanent molding has received a great deal of attention in the technical press as illustrated by the many excellent articles in the bibliography which follows. In general, this covers the period 1940-1958 and is merely representative of what is available. Numbers in •brackets refer to items in the bibliography.It may be desirable at the outset to give a few definitions covering those terms directly related to this subject. The following is a definition of permanent-mold casting as given by J. W. Meier in a paper, ""The Non-Ferrous Metals and Alloys"", read before the Ottawa Valley Chapt.er of the American Society for Metals:""Permanent Mold Casting is used where a large number of castings of the same part are required and higher mechanical properties, greater density and closer tolerances are essential. Since metallic mold s are very expensive, the number of castings must be sufficient to, defray, at least partially, the added expense. Molds are usually made from a good quality cast iron, 1but other mold materials, such as the aluminum and copper alloys, graphite, ceramics, etc., are being used in certain cases. Important factors in permanent mold casting are the mold temperature; the proper mold dressing; and, as in all other casting methods, the mold geometry, that is to say, the design of spruces, gates, risers and vents""."

In 1970, the U. S. Bureau of Mines contracted with Theodore Barry and Associates, a management consulting firm, to perform a one-year industrial engineering study of working-face hazards in underground bituminous coal mines. The field data was accumulated from industrial engineering observations in fifty underground mines. Supporting data for the analysis was derived primarily from the Bureau's fatal accident reports for the years 1966 through 1970. This report, Industrial Engineering Study of Hazards Associated with Underground Coal Mine Production, consists of three main parts: 1) The Fatal Accident Reports Analysis, 2) The Industrial Engineering Analysis, and 3) Multiflow Process Charts and Standard Time Data. The Fatal Accident Reports Analysis (Volume I, Section II) is based upon individual USBM fatal accident reports for 1966-1970. These were read, coded and computerized in terms of 84 significant variables. Cross-tabulations of these variables have been used to identify major underground hazards and to quantify significant causal factors. A very strong relationship was found to exist between fatal accident occurrences and low task experience. This led to a recommendation for formalized training, certification and supervision programs for miners. Victim compliance with federal regulations, mine regulations and supervisor instructions was analyzed, indicating that supervisors provide the most crucial communication link to workers. Thus, every attempt should be made to ensure the competence of immediate supervisors in the industry. Analysis of roof fall variables revealed a fatal propensity on the part of the miners to work under unsupported roof or under support conditions that are marginal. The technical approach to the problem is to make it physically impossible for a miner to work under these conditions; the behavioral approach is to ensure adequate training and develop proper safety attitudes among the miners. The Fatal Accident Reports Analysis revealed a need for normalizing data to interpret the results more accurately.

The Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) announced plans to shut down production at the remaining two potlines at its Point Comfort, Texas primary aluminum smelter due to the increased costs of natural gas. Total capacity of the facility, which had been partially closed since 1976, was 185,000 tons per year representing 3.6 percent of current capacity in the United States. There were practically no price movements in March on 99.5 percent aluminum ingot, with producers at 53¢ per pound and dealers, 48¢-48.5¢. BISMUTH The March selling position of U.S. producer metal was held at $3.50 per pound. In contrast, east coast dealers and traders adjusted their quotes from $2.55-$2.60 to a wider range of $2.40-$2.60.

In-1992, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the Anderson Mountain study area, including RARE II area 4-942, in Lemhi County, Idaho. The 7,340-ha study area lies within the Salmon National Forest about one kilometer north of the old mining town of Gibbonsville (pop.: 100). The eastern boundary of the study area is formed by the crest of the Bitterroot Range. The crest also serves as the continental Divide, and as the border between Idaho and Montana. The study area lies within the Gibbonsville Mining District, an important past producer of gold from lode and placer deposits. Since the 1870's, several hundred claims for both types have been located in the study area. Thirty-six current (1992) lode claims and two patented claim groups (one lode and one placer) are wholly or partially in the study area. No placer claims are current. In all, twenty-seven lode and five placer properties in and adjacent to the study area were investigated. Workings on the properties included 2 caved shafts; 36 caved adits; 8 open adits; 120 small pits, cuts, and trenches; and 4 large dozed cuts.

"The Louvicourt Mine located near Val d’Or, Quebec has been in operation since 1994. It produces copper and zinc concentrates. The tailings generated from the ore processing operations have a strong net acid generating potential. Louvicourt Mine, a grass root project, was designed for closure with the best available technology at the time of design. In order to inhibit short and long time acid potential generation, sub-aqueous disposal was selected at the design stage. Given the fact that disposal in a natural lake was ruled out up front for obvious reasons related to loss of natural habitat and risks of permitting delays, a man made facility built with dams was planned. This mine includes therefore the first fully man-made sub-aqueous tailings disposal facility built in Canada. The requirement of using sub-aqueous disposal had serious implications on the placement of tailings. This tailings facility located about 9 km from the mine site has been selected based on the available natural confinement, the favorable foundation and hydrogeological conditions. This paper describes the site and the design criteria that were used. A presentation is also made on the placement technique to maximize storage and its impact on the operation of the basin. The performance of the basin, the dams and the decant structures is reviewed.Résumé : La mine Louvicourt, située près de Val d’Or, Québec est opérationnelle depuis 1994. Elle produit des concentrés de cuivre et de zinc. Les résidus générés par les opérations de traitement du minerai possèdent un fort potentiel net de génération d’acide. Le parc à résidus de la mine Louvicourt, implanté dans un milieu naturel intact, fut doté dès sa conception initiale de la meilleure technologie de fermeture disponible à l’époque, soit la déposition sous couverture aqueuse et ce, dans le but de bloquer le potentiel de génération d’acide à court et à long terme des résidus. Etant donné que la déposition dans un lac naturel fut mise de côté dès le départ pour des raisons évidentes reliées à la perte d’habitats naturels et au risque d’introduire des délais dans l’émission des permis, un étang artificiel délimité par des digues a été conçu. Cette mine fut donc la première au Canada à être dotée d’une installation anthropique de disposition des résidus sous une pleine couverture aqueuse. L’exigence d’une déposition sous couverture aqueuse a eu des implications sur le mode de mise en place des résidus. L’emplacement de l’installation de gestion des résidus a été choisi en un lieu situé à environ 9 km du concentrateur sur la base du confinement naturel disponible et des conditions hydrogéologiques et géotechniques favorables. Cet article décrit le site et les critères de conception utilisés. Une présentation est faite sur la technique de mise en place utilisée pour maximiser l’entreposage et son impact sur l’opération du bassin. La performance du bassin, des digues et des structures de décantation est également revue."

The computer program, HYBMODE, has been developed to meet the need for a fast and economical method for clustering data points on the sphere. The algorithm used in this development is an extension of D. Wishart's one-level mode analysis. The program can be used to cluster either vectorial or axial data; it is currently being used by the Bureau of Mines to cluster fracture orientations.

A multiple coal fired boiler house provides steam for utility usage in various production plants. Maintaining stable header pressure and boiler availability is of critical importance for downstream consumers. Advanced Process Control comprising of a G2 based expert system and Model Predictive Control was implemented to improve the boiler house performance. The results yielded improvements in the main header pressure stability, reduction in boiler saturation and significant saving in coal consumption. Laboratory column leach tests are used routinely to evaluate gold and silver ores for heap leaching. The tests are fairly straightforward. The ore to be tested is placed into an appropriately sized leach column. Then an alkaline cyanide solution is applied to the ore and the effluent solutions are collected. The effluent solutions are then put through a column of activated carbon to recover the gold and silver in solution. Zinc precipitation may also be used for silver ores or if the ore contains a significant amount of soluble silver in addition to gold. The length of the leach time in the tests is mainly a function of how quickly the precious metals are recovered from the ore. At the completion of the tests, the tailings are assayed and the recoveries determined from the calculated head grades. The amount of ore to be used for a test is partly a function of its crushed size. The coarser the size, the larger the sample size for the column. A typical small-scale laboratory column test on ore crushed to -12 mm (-0.5 in.) would usually be conducted in a 100- to 150-mm-diam (4- to 6-in.-diam) column 2 m (6.6 ft) in height, containing about 20 to 45 kg (44 to 99 lb) of ore. A comparable test on the same ore crushed to 50 mm (2 in.) would be conducted in a 200- to 300-mm-diam (8- to 12-in.-diam) col¬umn 2 m (6.6 ft) in height, containing about 80 to 200 kg (176 to 441 lb) of ore. The United States has not begun commercial operations to tap its largest poten-tial sources of oil supply - oil shale and coal. The reason is that domestic petrol-eum has been plentiful in the past and liquid products probably could be produced from it at the lowest cost. In view of the ever-increasing need for petroleum in the United States, the critical international situation threatening foreign supplies, the growing demands for steel, and the heavy costs to industry of constantly discovering and developing new oil fields, it is believed that the prompt development of a synthetic fuel industry based on oil shale and coal is not only requisite to safeguard our oil supply but is an economically sound course for the foreseeable future. To neglect its development is to close our eyes and minds to our own resources at a time when they are needed critically. It also is apparent now that neither the Government nor industry would be taking any considerable economic risk in starting the initial plants, especially as measured against their potential value in meeting critical oil and chemical demands and in building a new industry in the West.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been concerned for many years with the general problems of underground coal mining and the particular problems due to the methane content of the coal. The Bureau and others have worked diligently to improve the health and safety conditions for underground coal miners. It has been recognized for many years that the methane in coal would have some value if it could he recovered and used, Also its removal before coal mining began or during the mining cycle itself would make mining safer and more economic due to a potential saving in ventilation costs. The work covered in this report was carried out to review methods of removing methane from active and inactive regions of operating coal mines and to determine how the methane could be concentrated and utilized economically.

Also included is a brief description of the mineral potential of Antarctica. The Latin American region encompasses an area twice that of the United States. This is the fifth of a series of annual reports4/ of technologic investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines on the occurrence, properties, mining, preparation, and uses of coal. The research of the Bureau is carefully coordinated with the requirements of the producing and consuming industries, with a view to conservation of resources of coal in mining and use, and conservation of the health and lives of workmen employed in these industries. Such coordination is facilitated by the wide range of specialization of the several groups on engaged in studies concerning coal. Here are reported correlated studies ranging from paleobotanic analysis of the formation of coal as it occurred some millions of years ago to the effect of mechanical methods of mining on present-day employment in mines. As this is a summary of the current work of the Bureau of Mines, so the Bureau likewise has provided a condensed review of the outstanding current work of others on research and technology of coal 5/.

I. INTRODUCTION. WHEN so much has been written upon a subject on which so little definite information is available as upon this, some reason must needs be assigned for adding to the volume of literature. A sufficient reason is found in the probable great future importance of China as a producer of mineral wealth. The present undeveloped state of mining in the Empire is due to many causes, among which the most important are the relatively simple needs of the population, the lack of transportation-facilities, the inelastic regulations governing the industry, and the superstitious reluctance of the people to make excavations which might disturb the spirits of the earth and air, or of ancestors. Iron is the metal most in demand, yet the needs of the population, until recently, only made necessary a production of approximately 0.5 lb. of iron per capita per year. The present annual production of iron for domestic consumption, in the United States, is nearly 600 lb. per capita. The curious state of development of transportation in this interesting country has been a greater handicap upon the mining industry than upon any other. The point upon which it hinges is the absence of a road-system. Except for a few military roads, now almost impassable, there are no roads in China; that is to say, there is no land which is set aside as a right of way, belonging to the commonwealth. Throughout the agricultural districts, generally speaking, the entire area is in private ownership, and the lines of travel are between fields. On November 9, the Reynolds Metals Company cut production by 12 at its primary aluminum smelters at Troutdale, Oreg., and Longview, Wash., as a result of an earlier 25% power cutback by the Bonneville Power Administration due to lower than normal stream flow in September, the Aluminum Company of America had closed one potline at its Vancouver smelter because of the power cutback. Nearly 700 union workers at Anaconda Aluminum Company's primary aluminum smelter at Sebree, Ky., walked off the job when their contract expired or, November 15, after rejecting a proposed 3-year contract. The smelter has an annual capacity of 180,000 tons mid accounts for 50% of Anaconda's aluminum production. No talks are scheduled.

This report summarizes the results of a research project entitled "Fatal Accident Data Base Development." This project is the last project under Contract No. S0110601. Volumes I and 1I, "Industrial Engineering Study of Hazards Associated with Underground Coat Mine Production," summarize the original industrial engineering project and the Fatal Accident Report Analysis project. These projects were completed and accepted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on December 10, 1971. Both volumes of the report have been made available by the Bureau to the public through the U. S. Department of Commerce technical information service. Another project under the same con tract, entitled "Equipment Operations Safety Study, ' was completed in January 1972 and the report was accepted by the U. S. B. M. at that time. The analysis in this Natal Accident. Data Lose Development report is closely related to analysis in both of the earlier reports. The original project involved an industrial engineering and safety of production operations for a representative sample of underground bituminous coal mines. The contactor was required to make recommendations 'in work practices, mining methods, equipment, and safety practices which can effectively reduce the fatality rate from rib and roof falls.' (Longwall mining methods were excluded from the study.) Time study and work element analyses were performed in over 50 mines as part of the field data gathering effort. Another requirement of the study was to develop sets of multiflow. Process charts, which are diagrammatic illustrations of the time-related interaction of mining, cycle job elements.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the availability of this fourth issue of the IPMI Journal, a publication of the International Precious Metals Educational and Scientific Foundation. This digital peer reviewed publication has been created as a vehicle for the sharing of technical information related to the science and technology of precious metals. Since 1976, the International Precious Metals Institute has championed the exchange of information of critical importance to the precious metals scientific and commercial communities through its various communications vehicles. This has included instructional videos, annual conference symposia, special topic committee meetings, regional seminars, and professional and student achievement awards. Due to the breadth of important topics related to all aspects of precious metals, it has been the vision of the IPMI to provide a publication available to the general public that would become a key source of pertinent topics containing high quality publications by experts in their fields of study. Historically, the IPMI has attracted world renowned experts in many fields (including Nobel Laureates Henry Taube, Ei-ishi Negishi, Robert Grubs, Professor Ben Feringa, and David MacMillan) in the dissemination of discoveries, inventions, and industry proven practices. Such information has a total value greater than the sum of its parts as seemingly unrelated innovations from distinct focus areas can be adapted to solve problems. Because of this important characteristic of information exchange, we have decided to create a digital journal, available to the general public, that will not only communicate state of the art discoveries and sound practices, but will also review historical communications from the IPMI’s archives that have value and use even in today’s environment. The value of processed materials of mineral origin was estimated to have exceeded $310 billion in 1990. U.S. raw nonfuel minerals mine production in 1990 was estimated at $33 billion, a 3.1 % increase over that of 1989. The value of minerals production increased in all but 3 of the last 30 years. The metals component of production value has fluctuated much more than the industrial minerals component. This reflects the greater volatility of metal prices. In 1990, total employment in metal mining continued the increase that began in 1987. This growth was partially offset by a slight decline in employment in industrial mineral mining, resulting in an overall in-crease of 1.1 % to 179,100 in 1990. Continuing high (by historical standards) metal prices led to expansions at some mines, as well as opening or reopening of additional mines, resulting in increased employment.

"Kahama Mining Corporation Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation, poured the first dore bar and filtered the first concentrate produced at the Bulyanhulu mine on February 28, 2001. This event marked the completion of the initial development of the Bulyanhulu Mine – Barrick’s first mine located outside of the Americas.Bulyanhulu is a 2,500 tpd underground mine located in the Lake Victoria gold belt of northern Tanzania. Gold is recovered as a gravity concentrate and smelted on site to produce dore bars or collected in copper concentrate that is shipped to offshore smelters. The facilities were constructed to meet Canadian standards. Unit operations include single stage crushing, SAG milling, gravity recovery, flotation, thickening and dewatering. Tailings are converted to paste and returned underground as paste backfill or pumped to the surface tailing site. The surface paste tailing disposal system is believed to be first of its kind in the gold industry. Paste disposal has several advantages over slurry, including lower dam construction costs, reduced water losses, and lower reclamation costs. This paper describes the facilities and discusses the challenges faced during development and construction including logistics, lack of infrastructure, recruiting and training, security, and social issues as well as initial operating results.INTRODUCTIONBarrick Gold Corporation completed the Bulyanhulu mine development in 2001. Capital cost of the project was US$280 million. The mine produced 241,575 ounces from start of milling to year end at a total cash cost of $197 per ounce. Numerous challenges were overcome in the mine’s development due to the general lack of infrastructure in Tanzania and the mine’s location some 1200 km inland by road from the port of Dar es Salaam."
