Mathematical simulation of reservoir behavior may be used to help understand reservoir processes and to predict reservoir behavior, thereby leading to the most economically desirable form of exploitation. In addition, simulation can be used as a tool for reservoir description to learn more about the physical nature of the reservoir and the mode of primary recovery. This use is essential in most reservoir studies and represents one of the more significant applications of simulation. Prediction of reservoir behavior provides information concerning displacement efficiency, optimum well locations, and the comparison of alternative producing processes. Since oil, water and gas all commonly occur in many reservoirs, a simulation that takes into account the simultaneous flow of three immiscible phases is a prerequisite for obtaining such information. Furthermore, a simulation that describes this flow in two dimensions provides the capability of evaluating combination gas- and water-drive reservoirs with either an areal or a cross-sectional description. Many reservoir problems require such a simulation. The objective of the research described here was to develop a mathematical model and associated computer program for accurate, efficient, and economical prediction of the reservoir flow of three phases in two-dimensional geometry. Several authors have discussed multidimensional reservoir simulation of two phases.l-3 Gottfried et al.' presented an analy- sis of three-phase simulation in one dimension. Fagin and Stewart" and Garrett6 have discussed the simulation of three-phase flow in two dimensions, but their solution techniques were different from the method discussed in this paper. In particular, previous models and computer programs have usually involved either fewer capabilities or inefficient and less rigorous descriptions resulting in limited applicability. In the following sections, we present a description of the model, an evaluation of the method, and the application to reservoir problems. Additional and supporting material is presented in the Appendix. The Three-Phase Model General Description The three-phase model consists of the mathematical description of the flow of oil, water and gas in a reservoir. Conceptually this description considers flow in all three space dimensions, but in the subject simulator it is assumed that no flow occurs in the third dimension. The model includes the effects on reservoir behavior of fluid and rock compressibility, viscosity, gravity, capillary pressure, relative permeability and gas solubility. Within the two-dimensional restriction, the reservoir considered may be completely heterogeneous and anisotropic. Keyboard patterns of hundreds of minor faults with vertical displacements of 3 mm to 2 m occur within the Greta coal seam and cause serious mining problems in collieries. Many of the faults are concentrated in linear zones termed swarms. One swarm is 600 m wide and more than 800 m long and others are of comparable size.The minor faults between the swarms are normal and are relatively widely spaced and show dip-slip movements, but the faults within a swarm are clustered and show strike-slip and oblique-slip movements. Fault swarms ofthis size and frequency have not previously been described from the Sydney Basin or on a comparable scale elsewhere but appear to be a widespread phenomenon in Australian coalfields. The faults are assigned to classes onthe basis of orientation which are then assigned to sequential phases I to IV on the basis of offsetting relations between representatives of each class. Phase I faults are minor thrusts. Phase IT, Ill, and IV faults are concentratedin the swarms and show sinistral strike-slip and normal dip-slip movements. The interference of slickenlines indicates that multiple movements have occurred within a single phase; their order is (i) strike slip (ii) dip slip and (iii) oblique slip. All faults truncate and post-date both cleat and sedimentary "stone" dykes.Phase I minor thrusts trend at a high angle to the Hunter Thrust and are considered to predate the Late Permian movements on the Hunter Thrust. Phase II and III minor faults are younger and may be any age between the latePermian and Tertiary.

For more than a decade, changes have occurred each year that have improved the regulatory and business climate for mining in Alaska. These changes have taken place during Republican and Democratic governorships as well as when the state House of Representatives and Senate were controlled by either party. During some years, the changes have been relatively minor. In others, including the 2003 legislative session, the changes could only be characterized as massive. These improvements have encouraged exploration. This, in turn, has resulted in some major new discoveries. But Alaska is essentially unexplored and tremendous opportunities remain.

The quality of iron ore fines have been deteriorating, which has affected sinter quality and productivity adversely. New pretreatment and sintering technologies are therefore required to tackle the gradual change in the quality of iron ore fines. In the sintering process, iron ore fines are first granulated with fluxes such as limestone and coke breeze, and are then loaded and fired in a sinter machine. Sinter productivity and quality are heavily influenced by the reactions occurring in the sintering bed. Hence fundamental understanding of these high temperature properties of ores is urgently needed.Formation of initial sinter melt, penetration and assimilation of nucleus particles by the initial melt, and consolidation and final solidification of final sinter melt are believed to be the key sintering reactions. The assimilation and penetration phenomena have been studied separately in the literature with model particles and diffusion couples and are therefore difficult to relate to sinter quality. In addition, the effect of ore mineralogy has not been studied in detail.In this study, tablets consisting of coarse particles from various iron ore fines as nucleus particles and chemical reagents as adhering fines were made and fired under various sintering conditions to investigate the penetration and assimilation behaviour simultaneously. The degree of assimilation, pore structure, compressive strength of the resultant analogue sinters were evaluated and the relationship between sinter strength and ore characteristics was further discussed. The nucleus particles from Ores A and B were found to be more porous and assimilated more readily with sinter melt, resulting in a viscous melt and a macro-porous sinter structure. The nucleus particles from Ores C and D on the other hand, assimilated less readily with sinter melt, resulting in a fluid melt and a denser sinter structure. This is consistent with the results reported in the literature, suggesting that the present evaluation method can be utilised for studying sintering reactions and predicting sinter quality.CITATION:Higuchi, T and Lu, L, 2017. The development of a process for removal of iron oxides from ilmenite is outlined whereby the Ti02 content of Western Australian ilmenites can be upgraded from 55 to approximately 90 per cent. In the first stage, the iron oxides are reduced with solid carbon (coal) to metallic iron. Experimental reductions were carried out in crucibles, a fluidized bed, and a small pilot plant rotary kiln. The reduced ilmenite was then agitated in aerated water, in the presenceof catalysts, so that the iron "rusted" away from the ilmenite grains and the precipitated iron oxide was easily separable by decantation.The influence of variables on the rates of reduction and oxidation are discussed. The oxidation rate was examined for both the physical oxygen transfer characteristics and electrochemically by reference to Pourbaix diagrams, in which redox potential is plotted against solution pH.The upgraded ilmenite is expected to be an attractive material for pigment manufacture, and the iron oxide has prospects of being a marketable by-product. The process may possibly be applied to other ores.INTRODUCTIONThere are extensive deposits of ilmenitic beach sands, Le. iron titanium oxides of the general formula FeTi03, 'occurring in the lower south-west portion of Western Australia, and although there has been considerable commercial development, local producers face keen competition on a freight-cost basis. Thus the removal of the unwanted iron oxide constituent would have the double advantage of reducing the freight differential and presenting a more attractivematerial to pigment manufacturers.

This is one of a series of publications by the Bureau of Mines dealing with mining methods and costs at representative operations in the United States. The report describes all phases of the mining methods for the open-pit operation and milling practices employed at the Vermont Asbestos Mines in Lamoille and Orleans counties, Vermont. A brief history of discovery and development of these asbestos deposits is given, and the ore deposits are described. Methods employed in exploration, sampling, and estimation of tonnage and grade are outlined. A breakdown of available cost figures is summarized in the last section. All asbestos ore produced in this area has been won by the use of surface-mining methods. Two quarries, the Lowell and the "C" Area, are in operation. The quarries combined are producing and the mill is processing approximately 3,500 tons of ore per 3-shift day The average 40,000 tons of crysotile asbestos fiber produced at this plant annually accounted for 96 to 98 percent of the total fiber produced in the United States in 1958. The mine is located (fig. 1) approximately 4 miles north of Eden Mills village on the southeastern flank of Belvidere Mountain (fig. 2).

DURING the last several years, the U-Zr system has been studied at many laboratories as one of the research programs sponsored by the Atomic Energy Commission. The equilibria in part of this system have been difficult to determine, although the phase diagram from 0 to 60 atomic pct Zr has been established with reasonable certainty. Existing diagrams of the system vary appreciably beyond 60 atomic pct Zr, particularly with regard to the existence of an intermediate phase. Most existing diagrams show a transformation or reaction horizontal near 600°C. In 1955, a collection of uranium phase diagrams' was prepared at the Battelle Memorial Institute and the U-Zr diagram in that collection contained a questionable region in the vicinity of 60 to 80 atomic pct Zr. Summer-Smith" has published a phase diagram of the system that shows no intermediate phase. Summer-Smith did his work with powders and found only the uranium and zirconium eutectoid mixture from X-ray patterns of material annealed below 600°C. Mueller3 at Argonne National Laboratory did similar work with filings, and he found that initially there was a pattern of an intermediate phase, but on long-time annealing

Experiments were conducted al temperatures of 480° to 800° C. and hydrogen pressure of 6,000 p.s.i.g. to determine the effect of coal residence time on the conversion of a high-volatile bituminous C coal to liquid and gaseous products when using a semicontinuous apparatus designed fur rapid heating and cooling of reactants. The objective of the studies at high temperatures was to determine if appreciable quantities of coal could be converted to gaseous hydrocarbons and low-boiling liquid hydrocarbons. Experiments at lower temperatures were designed to indicate shifts in product distribution with respect to temperature and to learn more about the general mechanism of the reaction when using close control of coal residence time. One percent molybdenum, based on m.a.f. (moisture-and ash-free) coal, was used throughout this investigation. At 800° C., 6,000 p.s.i.g., and "zero" residence time) the yield of gaseous hydrocarbons was about 38 percent and the yield of oil about 4.5 percent, based on m.a.f. coal. With IS minutes residence time, under the same conditions, the yield of gaseous hydrocarbons was approximately 80 percent with no increase in yield of oil. Apparently at 800° C., and hydrogen pressure of 6,000 p.s.i.g. coal was rapidly carbonized to char with expulsion of volatiles. Char was then slowly hydrogenated to gaseous hydrocarbons without production of oil.

This paper reports on research on leaching pyrite in a germ-free system. The effects of mineral particle size, pulp potential and various oxidation agents on pyrite leaching were studied. The results indicated that a smaller mineral particle size leads to a higher leaching rate of pyrite. The optimum results were obtained with a mineral particle size of -0.037 mm. The pulp potential reflected the leaching process and an increasing pulp potential improved pyrite leaching. The leaching rate rapidly increased with the addition of oxidation agents such as Fe3+ and H2O2. However, the precipitate generated by ferric ion coated the surface of the pyrite and prevented further leaching.

"Canada became the world's largest uranium producer in 1984. That leadership position is likely to be maintained for many years into the future because of a firm production base, many undeveloped known deposits with commercial promise, and a large geologicalpotential for new discoveries.There are some uncertainties on the horizon, principally because of restrictive actions in process within the U.S.A., which are aimed at preserving a deteriorating domestic uranium industry. Should such actions result in import restrictions, for example, there would be a negative effect on foreign producers at least in the short term. Canada may avoid such difficulties under a tentative U.S.-Canada free-trade agreement where restrictions on the import of Canadian uranium into the United States would be eliminated. Over the longer term, demand for Canada's uranium resources will grow because of the foreseen growth in the world's installed nuclear power capacity. IntroductionSince the phenomenon of nuclear fission was discovered in 1938, the utilization of uranium has grown substantially. Initially, the principal use for uranium was in the production of nuclear weapons. However, once civilian nuclear power reactors began to be built in the 1950s, an increasing fraction of uranium output was directed to the production of fuel elements for use in electricity generating stations.The cumulative uranium production by those countries in the World Outside Centrally-Planned-Economies Areas, WOCA, during the period 1938 to 1985 exceeded 800 000 tonnes of uranium. Some 60% of that was mined in the United States and Canada, as indicated in Figure 1. In 1986, nearly 80% of WOCA output came from five countries, Canada, United States, South Africa, Australia, and Namibia, as indicated in Table 1 and illustrated in Figure 2.During the past decade the world annual consumption of nuclear energy has more than tripled (Fig. 3). As of December 31, 1986, the world total of nuclear power reactors had reached 394 with a total net capacity of 270 GWe. The thermal output from nuclear power plants in 1985 exceeded 60% of the energy contained in all of the oil produced that year in the Middle East. Thus, nuclear power has already become an important component in the world energy supply picture."

The escalating demand for coal, in addition to the steady depletion of reserves, has produced increasingly difficult mining conditions for coal mining companies within the United States, resulting in mining above or below previously mined areas. The safe and productive extraction of coal in a multiple seam environment requires specific design technology for effective mine planning. Presently, one of the most useful design approaches for multiple-seam feasibility analysis is using numerical modeling techniques. Therefore, numerical modeling programs LaModel 2.1 and Lam2D were used to determine the feasibility of mining the Herrin (No. 6) coal seam over an existing room-and-pillar mine in the Springfield (No. 5) coal seam in the Illinois Basin.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed ultrasonic measurement instrumentation capable of measuring strains and elongations on tensioned and untensioned mine roof bolting systems. This report evaluates the pulsed-phase-lock-loop and pulse-echo systems. The pulse-echo systems measure time of flight of a signal through the bolt. The ultrasonic instrument converts the measurement into elongations or stress. The most recent Bureau instrument development converts travel-time measurements directly into elongation, load, stress, and torque by simple data manipulation from the keyboard. Bolt preparation and instrument calibration are described in detail.

This study investigated roof falls in room-and-pillar drift coal mines in eastern Kentucky and utilized geologic methods for predicting roof conditions in advance of mining. In the Highsplint mine, the roof was classified in four categories or conditions: Condition A and B (Laminated Shale), Condition C (Rolling Sandstone with Shale in Pockets) and Condition D (Zone of Major Sandstone Roll(s)). Structure contour and isopach maps of the Darby coal bed and associated immediate roof rocks were used to project axial trends of the sandstone roof. Trend mapping in the mine and on outcrop provided more detailed control for roof projections.

"IntroductionThe Beaverlodge Operation of Eldorado Nuclear Limited is a uranium property located near the north shore of Lake Athabasca about 7 miles from Uranium City, Saskatchewan.The mill is a 2000 tpd carbonate leach operation producing a high grade yellowcake concentrate.The Lamella Thickener was purchased to replace a 55 foot conventional unit which had deteriorated beyond repair. The cost of the unit was considerably lower than for a conventional unit, installation was much simpler and the unit is much more compact allowing it to be installed in the mill basement and be insulated completely.The unit was sized according to the results of tests performed both by the supplier and Beaverlodge engineering staff. The supplier guaranteed overflow clarities of less than 100 ppm suspended solids. The Lamella thickener was developed by A. Johnson Co. of Stockholm, Sweden, is manufactured under license by Parkson Corporation of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and is distributed in Canada by A. Johnson Co. of Montreal."

Construction of the Boddington Mine 130 km (81 miles) southeast of Perth, is about 89 percent complete. When the $2.9-billion development is finished, it will be the largest gold mine in Australia, producing 31 t/a (1 million oz/year), according to project majority owner Newmont Mining. Newmont?s acting regional group executive for Asia Pacific, Philip Stephenson, told a gold conference in Australia that the project would be ?the biggest thing for Newmont this year.? The project has been in the works for more than 10 years, but because of a three-sided ownership and fluctuating gold prices, it struggled to get started. However, Newmont is set to become the full owner of the project and is moving ahead on the low-grade project. ?We are targeting annual production of 31 t/a (1 million oz/year) for each of Boddington?s first five years. When it is in full production, Boddington will be the largest gold mine in Australia,? Stephenson said. ?The mine?s costs applicable to sales will be around US$9.64/g (US$300/oz) and that puts Boddington into the bottom quartile of the global cost curve. ?Strategically for Newmont, Boddington coming on-line will improve Newmont?s overall global geopolitical risk profile as it delivers greater exposure to an AAA-rated country.? Boddington has a projected mine life of 20 plus years. It has current total reserves of 622 t (20 million oz) and rising. Stephenson said Boddington has the largest reserve base of all gold projects in production or those that are about to go into production in A-rated countries or better. And it will be an important asset for many years to come. Newmont will acquire the remaining 33 percent share held by AngloGold Ashanti in a deal that should be concluded in the next two months. Output of mineral products was estimated to be unchanged in 1983 from that of 1982 with the exception of petroleum. The country began production of crude oil from the Seme Oilfield, and all output was exported. Wd and charcoal constituted 72% of Benin's total energy consumption, and imported petroleum products and electric power accounted for the remainder. Cement was produced from imported clinker. The gross domestic product (GDP) was $1,061 million in 1982, the latest year for which information was available.2 COMMODITY REVIEW Gold.-Exploration was underway at Perma by the U.S.S.R. as part of the United Nations development program. Gold had been produced previously at Perma, where a grade of 0.289 troy ounce of gold per ton was reported, An exploitation program for the deposit was to employ about 100 people, and output was targeted to reach 1,600 troy ounces per year. Recoverable reserves were put at 96,000 troy ounces.

1. Scope of project In South Australia, the Western Mining Corporation operates the underground copper and uranium mine Olympic Dam. The deposits concerned are enormous (approx. 570 million tons) and have been mined since 1988. At the end of 1996, Western Mining decided to increase the capacity of Olympic Dam from 85,000 t.p.a. to 200,000 t.p.a. Planning At this point, SIEMAG-GHH Mining Division was asked to carry out a study including the planning of the entire shaft hoisting operations and calculation of the investment and operating costs involved. With the assistance of Australian partners, the study was completed within a single month. The principal points of the study were as follows: ? Planning of the hoisting machinery for 1,375 tons per hour from the surge bin below ground to the discharge bunker above ground. ? Optimisation of the hoisting operation with regard to maximum availability and safety. ? Optimisation of the time schedule to minimise the financing costs of the investment. ? Statement of the investment and operating costs. ? Comparison of the technical data, design and availability of the planned machinery with reference plants. Construction of the plant Following acceptance of the study, the decision was taken within a few weeks to implement it. SIEMAG Transplan GmbH received the order to execute the entire shaft hoisting machinery on the basis of the study submitted. The decisive factors in placing the order were: ? Convincing study, adherence to schedule ? Reference to comparable plants elsewhere ? Reference with regard to availability.

AMONG the multifarious duties which fall to the lot of a mining engineer it is safe to say that there is none of more fundamental importance than the study of the ore-deposits on which it is thefunction of his profession to operate, inasmuch as the whole business of mining in all its complicated ramifications rests first of all on the existence of something to mine. -When the ore supplies in a mine fail, the enterprise comes to- an end, and nothing, therefore, is of more importance than a thorough understanding of the conditions under which the ore occurs, so that everything possible may be done to open up the mines well ahead of their immediate output requirements, and develop new ore reserves to take the place of that which is raised from day to day. The great aim which the mining engineer has to keep before him in his study of his ore-deposits is to obtain such a knowledge of them that he will have sound grounds for prediction as to how they will behave in parts of the mines which are well beyond the point of the pick. It is on his judgment of probabilities in this respect that mining operations are entered upon, and the more thorough his knowledge of all the factors affecting the problem, the more is the judgmentlikely to be a sound one. The test of any theory is experimental confirmation of the truth of predictions based upon it, and our aim should be to try to perfect our knowledge of the rules governing deposition of ores, so that our theories may prove themselves equal to the task of successful prediction.
