The U.S. Bureau of Mimes evaluated the effects of two iron-based fuel additives on diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions. The 5.6-L, six-cylinder test engine is typical of engines used in underground mines. One additive, ferrous picrate, did not measurably affect exhaust emissions. This report is mainly about a ferrocene-based additive that reduced DPM between 4 and 45 pct, depending on engine operating conditions. The report concludes that the DPM reductions were caused by the catalytic oxidation properties of a ferric oxide coating that developed inside the engine's combustion chamber. The ferric oxide coating also decreased gas-phase hydrocarbons and O, but it increased CO, and NO,. The increase in NO,, of about 12 pct, is considered the only adverse effect of the ferrocene-based fuel additive. The results suggest that the effectiveness of ferrocene was partially offset by increased sulfates because of the high-sulfur fuel used. Recommendations for continuing fuel additive research are presented.

"A number of high wall failures have occurred in some of the Alberta coal strip mines of a type called by the authors ""Multiple block plane shear slope failure "". They cause rapid deterioration of the dragline bench, reduced productivity and maintenance costs.The failures are invariably associated with the presence of almost horizontal (± 5 degrees) bentonitic clay bands in the overburden, often immediately above the coal seam, and regress behind the slope as a series of tension cracks which isolate detached blocks. As many as 17 sets of cracks have been observed, at lateral distances in excess of five times the slope height from the toe.The theory of this mode of failure is presented and a limiting equilibrium computer program which will produce deterministic or probabilistic (Monte Carlo) solutions is briefly described. A case history of one such failure is documented. It is shown that the extent of the regressive failure is exceedingly sensitive to the water table elevation, leading to the conclusion that drainage, if practical, represents the best control strategy. CEET, an acronym for Comminution Economic Evaluation Tool, was jointly developed by MinnovEX Technologies Inc. and 13 major mining companies for the purpose of designing and predicting the performance of grinding circuits. It fundamentally differs from other methods by using as its’ data set a geostatistically significant population of hardness data distributed across the mine block model. Historically the characterization of an orebody for the purpose of either designing a grinding circuit or predicting the performance of an existing circuit has been done with a relatively limited number of discrete samples. In addition to power selection, shell sizing, and costing for multiple circuit options, CEET also outputs tons per hour, P80, and operating cost on every mining block for subsequent integration back into the block model. This paper will provide an overview of what CEET is and how it works.

Recent advances in computing, rendering, and display technologies have generated increased accessibility for virtual reality (VR). VR allows the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations, test conditions, and visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a VR framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization, and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine using self-escape and proximity detection as case studies. Features include mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models.

In undertaking to write a few notes on practical mining in Bendigo, the great quartz mining centre of Victoria, which just now is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary of gold mining, satisfaction must be expressed which is, no doubt, shared by all mining men and inyestors, that Bendigo has not lagged behind other Australian mining districts in the evolution of mining from its crude state, subsequent to the discovery of gold in 185 to its present more perfect state; and though it may be said that it has not yet reached the high pinnacle of perfection towards which advanced science and change of conditions may yet lead it in the course of future progress, yet, what has already been done in this respect, the adoption of the most approved methods appliances and modern machinery, tending towards greater and still greater efficiency, facility, and economy in our mining industry, must be accepted as a guarantee that in tne future as well as in the past, progress in our means of developing our mining resources will ever remain our watchword, by means of which future difficulties will be overcome as well as they have been removed in the past.The adoption of this principal, combined with a study of rigid economy, has raised gold mining here, as well as in other places, from a state of speculation, and sometimes wild speculation, to the status of a solid, stable industry, the strong supportand backbone of the country in which it flourishes. Two of the principal factors which have been to a great extent instrumental in bringing about this satisfactory state, must be specially mentioned.

An evaluation of a pilot scale Delkor horizontal belt filter at Bellambi's South Bulli Colliery showed high productivities and low moisture contents for a range of feed slurries. When treating flotation concentrate, a productivity in excess of 1000 kg/m2/hr (dry) at a moisture content of less than 22 per cent was obtained. The results indicated the belt filter had a capacity twice that of conventional drum or disc filters, and was capable of dewatering a very fine, thickened, classifying cyclone overflow slurry to an acceptable moisture content. The superior performance of this filter is discussed in terms of the factors influencing cake formation and the stratification of solids in the filter bowl of a conventional rotary vacuum drum filter.

"The gravity circuit at Les Mines Camchib Inc. consists of two pinched sluices to bleed a feed to one of two 76 cm (30"") Knelson concentrator. The Knelson concentrate is upgraded to smeltable grade with a smaller Knelson (18/30 cm) and a riffleless table. Their tails are column cyanided and washed prior to recycle to the grinding circuit. This paper details size-by-size circuit performance. The Knelsons recover around 90% of free gold (as determined by Mozley Laboratory Separator), even below 37 µm. The sluices are ineffective, with upgrading ratios around 2, but approaching unity in the fine sizes. Much of the effectiveness of the circuit lies in the high gold circulating loads in the grinding circuit, which partly atone for the poor sluice performance, and the ability of the Knelsons to recover free gold. Secondary upgrading recovers slightly above 99% of the primary concentrate gold, 90% of it in a 65% Au concentrate and the balance in a heavily loaded (10 to 20 oz/st) pregnant solution. INTRODUCTIONBackgroundThe operating performance of the mill of Les Mines Camchib Inc. has been described earlier (Laplante et al., 1989). The presence of significant chalcopyrite (1 % and up) makes flotation necessary prior to cyanidation, to limit cyanide consumption and minimize environmental impact. In 1982, the presence of very high gold circulating loads in the grinding circuit lead to the commissioning of a gravity circuit, schematically shown in Figure 1. Gravity recovery of gold has been found beneficial because it increases metallurgical recovery by 1-3% (Laplante et al, 1987), as only part of the flotation tail is cyanided, and economic recovery, because of the lower net smelter return of gold in the flotation concentrate (as compared with the gravity concentrate). The latter increase is estimated, with a net smelter return of 95%, at 1.5% when gold recovery by gravity is equal to 30%. In early 1988, a sampling program was initiated to characterize the behaviour of gold in the grinding/gravity circuit. This paper reports on the results of this study."

Flotation schemes for the separation of molybdenite from other minerals are based on utilizing the Inherent hydrophobicity of molygdenite (Fuerstenau1). This natural floatability was attributed to the crystalline structure of molybdenite by Gaudin et al.2 who suggested that any surface formed by the rupture of van der Wall's bonds should be hydrophobic and, therefore, naturally floatable. Other authors argued that "natural floatability" is dependent of adsorption of hydrocarbon ions and/or molecu1es on the surface of the minerals. This theory, albeit-c questioned 1,2 has long been recognized in actual practice of molybdenite flotation as the latter in carried out with hydrocarbons, such as fuel oil, kerosene and stove oil. Although conferring ready floatability to molybdenite, these presents generally have little effect on other sulphides and silicates. However, talc is a noteworthy exception because of its innate floatability4. Not withstanding the reason for this behavior which has also been attributed to crystal structure2 its end results as in the case of molybdenite is an immediate flotation response to frothing oils arid kerosene, as was observed by Baranovski5, Sutherland and Wark6.

Selection of the best possible truck type (model) is of crucial importance for the mine decision-makers. In this paper, authors contribute to the body of knowledge by developing a novel methodology for the selection of mining truck. Both the Coefficient of Technical Level (CTL) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods were used in this study. The CTL represents a mathematical function which takes into consideration the interrelations among the main technical parameters of mining trucks. The authors developed a hierarchical structure where both attribute categories and their importance, i.e. priority or weight in the selection process were determined. For each category, a number of sub-attributes and their priorities were assigned, and a pairwise comparison among them was performed using the AHP method. In the final part of the study, the CTL was integrated into the AHP and represents a holistic approach in the selection of mining trucks. A case study on 180 tonnes truck category offered by five manufacturers was carried out. A sensitivity study of obtained results was also performed indicating a very stable solution. The methodology presented in this paper may be used by mining operators to help in the selection of a specific type when acquiring a new truck. It may also be used by equipment manufacturers to help in analysis of potential benefits of envisaged modifications concerning an existing truck type and/or development of a new type.

The economy of Belize continued to show a very slight but still positive growth during 1986. The gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated to have been about $164 million,2 almost the same as those of 1984 and 1985. Foreign investors looked favorably on Belize because it had remained isolated from the sometimes turbulent political and social strife elsewhere in Central America. Reportedly, in late 1986, Guatemala had decided not to pursue its claim to Belizean territory and to give full recognition to that country. Discussions were to be held regarding any matters of mutual concern. New investment possibilities were oriented toward agriculture or manufacturing endeavors. Except for some interest in petroleum exploration, the minerals sector remained limited to the quarrying of construction-related materials.

The use of hydraulically stowed classified mill tailings as a subsidence preventative will be discussed as well as the use of sandfill in pillar recovery and as a part of the regular mining cycle.

The Olmsted Locks and Dam project is located on the Ohio River approximately 16.5 miles upstream of its confluence with the Mississippi River. It consists of twin 1200 ft. locks with floating and fixed approach walls, five 110 ft. wide tainter gate bays, a 1400 ft. wide navigable pass boat operated wicket gate section, and a 400-ft. section of fixed weir (Fig. 1). The project will have a total cost over 1.0 billion dollars, and as such is one of the largest civil works project underway in the Corps of Engineers.

This study investigates upgrading of low-grade banded hematite quartzite iron ore (Fe ~31%). Conventional beneficiation was found to be futile. The susceptibility of iron phases to microwave exposure and their selective absorption assists in the liberation of iron values. Microwave exposure of coarse particles at 540 W for 10 min yielded a concentrate with Fe 56.30% and recovery of 50.68%. Conventional carbothermic reduction at 500 °C, 60 min and 9% charcoal yielded a concentrate with Fe 57.6% and iron recovery of 68%. The presence of sufficiently bonded silica leads to an easy formation of a fayalite phase. The microwave reduction design yielded FeG of 57.6%, FeR of 47% and a yield of 24% at an optimal condition of 540 W, 8 min and 6% charcoal. It was found that a small fraction of microwave-irradiated ore-charcoal mixture melted rapidly, and pure ferrite balls were observed within 8 min. An optical micrograph of a ferrite ball reveals the retained austenite and martensite phase.

The Block 76 project includes the demolition and redevelopment of an entire city block for mixed use retail, office and residential properties directly adjacent to Historic Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. Excavation was carried out 65 ft below street grade and by as much as 50 ft directly below adjacent buildings supported by shallow foundations. Movements of the earth retention system and adjacent buildings were monitored in real time using automated equipment which complemented traditional geotechnical instrumentation. In the areas immediately adjacent to the existing buildings 9 stories or greater, anchored diaphragm walls were employed. Areas of the site not supported by diaphragm walls employed a soil nail wall system. Jet grouting was used for water cutoff in lieu of dewatering along the north and east sides of project. In total, the earth retention scope included 45,000 sq. ft of diaphragm wall, 104,000 sq. ft of soil nail wall, and micropile underpinning of 3 buildings. This paper provides an overall description of the Block 76 project. A detailed account is provided of the technical and commercial lessons learned. The project provided a unique example of how an owner can receive best overall value by acceptance of some technical risk up front. Benefit was gained by allowing the contractor to reduce contingencies within the bid from unknowns on a fast-track project.

The primary recrystallization textures of 11 single crystals cold rolled 70 pct were determined. The effect of crystal orientation on recrystallization behavior was investigated also and found to be large. An exception was found to the relationship that strong components of the recrystolliza-tion texture are rotated from the cold rolled texture by 30° about <110> axes, but generally this relationship was found to hold quite well. Evidence supporting oriented nucleotion was found and discussed in terms of probable active slip systems and <110> edge dislocations. THE present paper is one of a series&apos;.&apos; on recrys-tallization phenomena in cold rolled 31/4 Si-Fe single crystals and is mainly concerned with the textures produced on recrystallizing from stable end orientations. Data for the cold rolled textures of the crystals used have been reported by Koh and Dunn." Their results showed that the sharpness of the cold rolled textures varied throughout the range of stable end orientations and that the tendency to re-crystallize was related to the sharpness of the cold rolled texture, wherein the rate of recrystallization increased and the size of recrystallization grains decreased with decreasing sharpness of the cold rolled texture. In the project under consideration the cold rolled crystals involved a range of initial orientations that, together with those studied earlier,&apos; provide information on several points. The first point is whether the recrystallization texture from a (111) [112] cold rolled texture, a stable end orientation that can be approached from different directions, correlates in any way with the initial orientation before cold rolling, or whether the recrystallization texture is entirely determined by the observable features of the cold rolled texture. The second point involves a preliminary study to see if the main components of the recrystallization textures correlate with the most probable active slip systems. The third point is to determine what effect departure from slip on one slip system has on the tendency to recrystallize. Experimental Procedure Nine specimens from a previous investigation and two additional ones from thicker stock (lot D) but of similar composition to the others were used in the present work. The latter two crystals, like the nine, were cold rolled to a reduction in thickness of 70 pct and the amount of widening was determined. Depending on their primary recrystallization behavior, the cold rolled crystals were given short or long anneals at temperatures of 980°C or higher. Table I summarizes the data on initial orientations, the textures obtained by cold rolling, and the anneals given to provide samples for the present work. Fine grained specimens were thinned to 0.002 in. thickness and placed in an integrating specimen holder. Chart recordings using a transmission X-ray method and MoKa radiation were obtained for diffraction from (110) planes. This method,&apos;,3 which gives data for all of the pole figure except a central region of 30" radius, proved sufficient to give generally five, and sometimes six, of the six possible pole concentration areas of any one component of the texture. These data, therefore, were generally adequate for a positive identification of each component present. The first texture obtained for specimen B-2 was poorly defined because of too coarse a grain structure and therefore too few crystals in each component for satisfactory X-ray reflections. The same

This work was commenced at a time when information on the manufacture of cemented tungsten carbide was urgently needed in Australia. Much information of a general type has been published, but many of the details of the processes used are still undisclosed. The aim of this research was to determine a satisfactory way in which cemented tungsten carbide could, be made, and to investigate the problems which are associated with the process. As the work proceeded, its ramifications grew continually, and it was necessary to limit the possible lines of investigation. After much experimental work, a 9% cobalt-tungsten carbide alloy was developed which had satisfactory properties when used as a cutting tip. The effect of certain variables on the properties of this particular alloy was investigated.The tungsten carbide was prepared in stages from King Island scheelite concentrates under strict laboratory control, whilst the cobalt (1) used was made from cobalt oxide prepared from crude cobalt oxide obtained from Eisdon.In order to clarify the detailed experimental work, a brief summary of the method used for the preparation of cemented tungsten carbide follows.Tungsten carbide and cobalt are prepared in a very finely powdered state, and are then thor,oughly mixed by a ball milling operation. The resultant mixture is pressed in a suitably shaped die into small compacts which are subsequently &apos;&apos;&apos;presintered,&apos;&apos; i.e., heated&apos; in hydrogen between 800&#176;C. and 1000&#176;C. The final sintering is carried out in hydrogen between 1,400&#176;C.and 1,600&#176;C. for about half an hour. These &quot;alloys&quot; may contain from 3 to 13% cobalt, depending on the particular properties required of them.PREPARATION OF MATERIALSThe tungsten oxide prepared as described by Smithells (2) was extremely finely divided, and after a few hours&apos; grinding in a ball mill, the powder consisted of material below 10 microns iJ;l size. The oxide was reduced to tungsten metal with hydrogen in a tube furnace. Butte, Montana holds a prestigious place in the history of mining, deemed “The Richest Hill on Earth,” containing a plethora of underground mines. The Orphan Boy/Orphan Girl underground mines, on the western side of Butte, operated from 1895-1956 producing zinc, lead, silver, and manganese. Today, the Orphan Boy mine is part of Montana Tech’s Underground Mine Education Center (UMEC) and the Orphan Girl mine houses the World Museum of Mining. Underground development in the Orphan Boy mine continues to progress as students from Montana Tech receive hands-on underground training; in addition, the UMEC is a multi-disciplinary research facility. Repeated underground blasting occurs in close proximity to old mine workings (wood supports installed circa 1950 or earlier). Research began to determine the impact of underground blasts on nearby pre-existing structures. Using the ISEE Field Practice Guidelines for Blasting Seismographs, one seismograph monitors the predominately-wooden structures to measure their response during each underground blast and one seismograph positioned on the surface to monitor surface structure response to the blast. This paper presents the findings of the research conducted to date for the project. The paper includes analysis of the research data, and conclusions determined from the research. Recommendations for the future work are included as well.

"Since 1999, COREM (formerly the Centre de Recherche Minérale) has conducted and coordinated research and development activities for a consortium of mining companies that uses the benefits and advantages of collaborative pre-competitive research. In particular, COREM’s “In Situ Optimization Group” is involved in the development and implementation of modem information technologies related to process optimization and control.The POP Project was launched in order to increase and consolidate the use of such technologies applied to mineralurgical and metallurgical processes. To ensure a successful transfer to the industry, there are a number of essential activities that have to be undertaken. These activities have been identified by COREM’s members and are grouped into three main modules:- R&D Module: research and development in universities and research centres;-Technology Transfer Module: integration of new tools into the POP Software, industrial applications and technical support;- Training Module: education of new engineers in universities and continuing education of plant personnel through on-site workshops.This paper outlines the opportunities that led to the definition of the POP Project, presents its main objectives and describes its main modules. The main features of the POP Software are outlined, the first applications at COREM’s member plants are presented and, finally, future developments are discussed."

In, one stage of the purification sequence of the zinc sulphate electrolyte used at Risdon, cobalt is, precipitated as cobalt nitroso-,B-naphtholate, which is separated from the solution by filtration. Owing to the method of conducting the purification the filter cake contains much gypsum, unconsumed calcium hydroxide, basic zinc sulphate, and entrained zinc sulphate solution, Small amounts of iron and copper that have escaped previous purification steps are also precipitated with the cobalt as nitroso-,B-naphtholate. Thisprecipitate, normally carrying about 18% cobalt, is the raw material for the production of cobalt oxide, cobalt sulphate and cobalt metal.COBALT OXIDEThe main problem in the preparation of a reasonable grade of cobalt oxide from the filter cake is the economic separation ,of the cobalt nitroso-,B-naphtholate from the gypsum. This was solved by the application of flotation. It was discovered that the cobalt nitroso-,B-naphtholate, under correct conditions, would float without any addition agent, giving a relatively high grade concentrate. A plant, was built and has been in operation since 1936. The filter cake is pulped with water and pumped to one of two mechanically agitated tanks, eath capable of holding one day&apos;s output. Sulphuric acid is added until the free acid concentration reaches about 3 gm. per litre. Basic zinc sulphate is dissolved and calcium hydroxide converted to gypsum. The pulp, carrying about 2t lb. of solids per gallon, is pumped at a suitable rate to the first of a series of 10 flotation, boxes.. An empirical equation for the prediction of the viscosity of several pure paraffin hydrocarbons and nitrogen is presented. It involves temperature, pressure and six constants of the material, and it applies reliably to both liquids and gases. The equation is similar in form to van der Waal&apos;s equation of state. For the paraffin hydrocarbons methane through r-hexane and nitrogen, an average absolute deviation of 1.9 percent was obtained on 1,006 data points described in the literature by 14 authors. When this equation is extended to complex, liquid hydrocarbon mixtures, a correlation was obtained with an average absolute deviation of 9.9 percent. INTRODUCTION Equations describing the flow of gas and liquid through porous media contain the viscosity coefficient of the fluid. If other pertinent variables remain constant, the volume rate of flow is inversely proportional to this coefficient. In dealing with condensate fluids and volatile oils, however, the compositional effects resulting from changing pressure materially affect the viscosity. The effect of compositional changes also may be significant in certain secondary recovery or pressure maintenance processes, notably miscible displacement or gas injection. Early attempts to describe the performance of reservoirs utilized a volumetric material balance method wherein gas and liquid in the reservoir were identified as produced gas and liquid at the surface. This method of analysis proved adequate for reservoirs at moderate temperature and pressure that contained gas with moderately low amounts of condensable materials. The volumetric material balance procedures for "black oil" reservoirs leave much to be desired when applied to condensate and volatile oil reservoirs because phase behavior and compositional changes are relatively more important in these cases. The alternative is a compositional material balance, which in turn, requires a correlation of properties of the reservoir fluid with composition. This paper supplies this correlation in regard to viscosity, for reservoir crude oils. REVIEW OF LITERATURE The literature contains many empirical equations describing the effects of composition, temperature and pressure on the viscosities of pure liquids and binary liquid mixtures. However, the applicability of a majority of these equations is limited to very low pressures and to a small number of systems. Most of them, when applied to complex hydrocarbon systems, are of little value. The lack of utility of the majority of equations results from the fact that they were developed to show the separate effect of temperature, pressure or composition on viscosity, but not to predict the viscosity as a function of all three variables. And with the few exceptions noted below, they were developed to apply to much simpler systems than hydrocarbon mixtures. Eakin1 developed an equation for the viscosity of pure light hydrocarbons applicable in the gas, liquid and dense fluid regions, and in its most general form is written as µ - µo =A(ebP - e-cpk) The pure component viscosity at atmospheric pressure and temperature T, µo, was calculated using the Sutherland equation: µo = BT3/2/T + S The constants in Eakin&apos;s equation permitted the term e-CPk to become quite small at high densities (above 0.215 gm/cc), and the general equation would simplify to
