A model was developed to facilitate secondary tailgate support selection based on analysis of over 100 case studies, compiled from two different surveys of operating longwall coal mines in the United States. The ALPS (Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability) program was used to determine adequacy of pillar design for the successful longwall case histories. A relationship was developed between the secondary support density necessary to maintain a stable tailgate entry during mining and the CMRR (Coal Mine Roof Rating). This relationship defines the lower bound of secondary support density currently used in longwall mines. The model used only successful tailgate case history data, with adequate ALPS SF according to the CMRR for each case. This model facilitates mine design by predicting secondary support density required for a tailgate entry depending on the ALPS SF and CMRR, which can result in significant economic benefits.

Tailings and water management facilities are essential and integral components of mine and mill operations. They must be managed for the long term in order to ensure that safe and environmentally responsible stewardship is achieved. Toward this end, in 1998, The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) published A Guide to the Management of Tailings Facilities, which recommended the implementation of a tailings management framework (Figure 1) to integrate environmental and safety considerations into each stage of the life cycle of a tailings facility, from initial site selection and design, through construction and operation, to eventual decommissioning and closure. By February 2000 it was becoming apparent that while mining companies were making significant progress toward implementing and documenting tailings management systems, and integrating them with overall environmental management systems, further effort was warranted in their application at the operational level. In particular, a need was identified for further guidance in preparing manuals that outline procedures for the safe operation, maintenance and surveillance (OMS) of tailings and water management facilities.

Petroleum exploration in onshore Gippsland was directed in the 1950s and 1960s towards plays in the basal Latrobe and Strzelecki Groups, but these became forgotten in the 1970s with the Latrobe play discoveries offshore. The principal explorationists of the time were Woodside Oil and Arco Ltd, who then departed the scene after drilling some 18 wells without major success. In the late-1980s successful hydrocarbon finds in equivalent age Otway Group sediments in the Otway Basin were made and in early 1990 Tyers Petroleum began investigations into Strzelecki Group prospects as applied to the onshore Gippsland Basin. Some 18 anticlines have been mapped, based on shallower coal exploration drilling in the Latrobe Group, which from seismic and gravity evidence are believed to unconformably overlie similar anticlinal structures in the underlying Strzelecki Group. Strzelecki targets of interest within drilling depth are the basal Tyers Conglomerate/Rintouls Creek Sandstone Formations which outcrop in the north of the Latrobe Valley and are analogous to the Pretty Hill Sandstone in the Otway Basin. In addition, intra-Strzelecki Group targets similar to Heathfield and Windermere Sandstone Members are also considered to be present. Good source rocks are abundant including coal seams and carbonaceous sediments of Neocomian and Jurassic age, which lie within the oil window. Seal is provided by the overlying Aptian-Albian aged volcanogenic sediments. The Tyers/Rintouls sandstones - a target in the Woodside/Arco wells, with two exceptions, were not reached. Encouraging intra-Strzelecki shows were reported in many of the wells. Basal and intra-Strzelecki porous quartzose sandstones remain one of the few untested plays left in the Gippsland Basin and, in the onshore, merit extra attention as they he within the oil window at economically drillable depths.

Smoke abatement is a subject of which fuel technology, although absolutely essential, is only a part. Its successful accomplishment starts and ends with human factors that must be given thorough consideration; between this "start" and "end" fuel technology is applied. Smoke abatement usually starts from the desire of some person or persons to be free from uncleanness caused by the stack of someone else and ends with the sincere desire of the operator of the fuel-burning equipment to maintain a clear stack. Although "smoke abatement been discussed for many years, it is only recently that the public has been mindful of such expressions as "air pollution" and "air hygiene." The subject has duel in common with that of supplying pure water but is more complicated. The public desires pure water, expects pure water, is willing to pay for pure water, and expects to continue to pay for it indefinitely; it is a development of civilization. It is doubtless correct to say, however, that people in general do not et realize the detriment of air pollution to their well-being or give the question enough serious consideration. This is illustrated by the fact that in city smoke abatement it is the mass of small householders that sins the most and is the hardest to handle. It is rather difficult to assemble a group of people in a room without the air becoming contaminated with smoke. Smoke abatement will lag with the lack of desire for pure air - probably the biggest human factor involved in its accomplishment.

1.0 PROLOG Since the "end" of the Cold War, revolutionary new research and commercial remote sensing capabilities are being developed that will dramatically change the way we map the earth and address its environmental problems. The technology challenge is not the growth of new environmental remote sensing technologies themselves. It is, rather, how these new innovative observing systems can be accepted and used to the benefit of both the regulatory and the mining communities in the light of present concerns about unknown risks of discovery and liability. "The Aurora North mine has been operating for more than ten years, and is the source of over half of Syncrude’s bitumen production. In order to minimize front-end rejects, and to allow for high throughput, the ore top size at Aurora has been set at a nominal 125 mm. These relatively large lumps have a significant effect on both pump performance and pipeline pressure gradient. Current design methods underestimate the solids de-rating effect of lumpy slurries in pumps, and do not accurately describe the distribution or magnitude of the lump effect on pipeline pressure gradient. Data from the Aurora hydrotransport systems has been compiled, to quantify the effect of lumps on the pump head ratio and pipeline pressure gradient, and how this effect changes as lump ablation occurs along the length of the pipeline. A model has been built, using a logarithmic curve, which predicts the effect of 125 mm lumps on pipeline pressure gradient as a function of velocity and the distance from the start of a hydrotransport pipeline. This model is applicable only to Aurora hydrotransport operation, but similar models could be developed for other operations using the same methods. Using accurate pipeline pressure gradients and pump head ratios when designing future hydrotransport pipeline systems will help improve their reliability and operability."

In 1988, Albania's centrally planned economy continued to decline. The country's officially published yearend economic report did not contain concrete results such as the growth of national income or industrial output. 2 The shortfall for central budget earnings for 1988 amounted to 9% below the planned target. Losses in industry were attributed to poor management and organization, as well as to low technical standards and excessive consumption of fuels and raw materials. The construction, energy, and mining sectors of industry did not meet their annual production plans. As in 1987, within these sectors, the chromite and petroleum extracting and processing industries continued to lag in output. Both chromite and petroleum remained Albania's chief sources of foreign exchange; the production downturn of these commodities continued to negatively affect the country's foreign trade position, especially in view of constitutional prohibitions against using foreign credit to finance trade. The chief events in the minerals industry in 1988 included the construction startup of the first of four planned new concentrators at the Bulquize chromite mine, as well as the construction startup of new ferrochromium capacities at Elbasan. Also, the copper mining industry reported the completion of facility expansion at the Perlat mine in the Mid-rite district. Albania began new facility construction at the Dinamo heavy-equipment enterprise at Tirana to maximize self-sufficiency in mining equipment production. Upon completion, the new factory would double the out-put of mining equipment at the enterprise and would introduce new designs for electric trucks and pneumatic drills for the mining industry. The new facility would also increase the production of new machinery and equipment for the country's beneficiation plants.

Today, the mining and mineral sectors are being impacted by highly fluctuating supply ? demand, extreme price volatility and tremendous market uncertainty on a world-wide basis. This pattern is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. In particular, large consumers of tonnage quantities of industrial gases (oxygen, nitrogen) all have to make informed investment decisions in this uncertain economic environment. Plant owners ? operators need to carefully examine their current and future industrial gas needs in order to develop the most cost-effective industrial gas plant configuration. This can be done by partnering with an experienced engineering company that offers a complete technology portfolio for producing industrial gases. Ideally, the mineral and engineering companies have to work together as a single team to identify the most efficient and economic plant design. This includes an in-depth assessment of capital and operating costs, in order to deliver an optimal solution, taking plant reliability and process safety into account. It is important to consider all the industrial gas needs at a given manufacturing complex, in conjunction with available utilities and infrastructure to develop the best possible long term solution. Oxygen (O2) requirements include: oxygen enriched and oxy-fuel combustion, smelting and hydrometallurgical operations. Nitrogen (N2) is used for annealing. All of these industrial gas requirements have to be examined at a given site over a long term horizon in a holistic manner. Cryogenic air separation was first practiced at a commercial scale in 1902. Since then, the technology has been constantly refined to reduce cost; and improve reliability and flexibility. Today, using advanced engineering techniques, including proprietary process simulation, and modern fabrication techniques, it is possible to build air separation plants that are both low cost and high quality at the same time. It is important to work with an engineering company that owns a complete portfolio of industrial gas technologies, functional engineering capabilities and a variety of plant solutions. Such a partnership can quickly identify a ?sweet spot? for a given situation. By drawing on experience gained from hundreds of projects, it is possible to quickly optimize a given requirement. In situations where a customer wants a complete solution it may be appropriate to provide an air separation plant on a turn-key basis. This will enable the mining and mineral processor to focus on their core business. By using global procurement and construction capabilities it is possible reduce cost and improve project execution, thereby making industrial gas plant procurement simpler and cheaper for the mining and mineral sector.

The difficulties associated with wet-processing fine size coal led the Bureau of Mines to investigate a dry process for removing pyrite from coal pulverized to powerplant fineness. The dry process that was investigated consists of two cleaning steps: First, centrifugal separation is used to remove a fine, pyrite-depleted portion as a product; second, the remaining coarser, pyrite-enriched portion is taken to electrostatic separation in which pyrite is concentrated and rejected. Ball milling and Hardgrove milling were used to pulverize the coal. Three coals from the Pittsburgh seam were treated by the dry-removal process. Over 55 pct of the pyrite, which amounted to 70 pct of the available pyrite, was removed in a reject of 10 to 20 pct from one of the coals. Similar treatment of the other two coals removed about 35 to 50 pct of the pyritic sulfur, which amounted to about 70 pct of the available pyritie, sulfur from these coals. Both centrifugal and electrostatic separations were more efficient when pyrite particles were as large as possible. Separation efficiency was improved by confining the particle size of the feed to a relatively narrow range and by avoiding excessive amounts (more than 10 pct) of dust in the electrostatic range. The removal efficiency was increased with the use of stage grinding.

This paper seeks to examine some of the technical factors influencing the deflection of Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining walls based on the authors' field observation of numerous structures. Excessive deflections can be unsightly and can be perceived as wall failure. Deflections can cause cracking or gapping of the facing units and general misalignment. Deflection of the reinforced backfill zone behind the wall face can result in settlement of the backfill zone and adjacent pavement cracking. Deflections can be the result of excessive movement external or internal to the reinforced soil structure. This paper only examines internal factors affecting wall deflections. External factors such as foundation settlement are not discussed.

"The process control and cost of monitoring mining slurries is normally accomplished using a continuous mass flow system, conventionally embodying a volumetric magnetic flow meter and nuclear density meter. DuPont’s Maxville Mine at Starke, Florida, USA was chosen to examine costs associated with performance of a nuclear density meter. Since it is typical of many mid-sized establishments and has a long history in their use. The published accuracy under ideal conditions of a nuclear density meter is ± 1.0%, but in practice considerable ambiguity of cost in annual production implies ± 2% at best. Using such accuracy in a 400mm (16”) pipe carrying zircon slurry at 75,000 tons/day, the cost of ambiguity, together with initial and running costs, amount to nominally $962,000 per year.Such cost leaves much to be desired. This paper describes an unique continuous, direct mass per unit volume Density Meter used for mining slurries in pipe sizes up to 1000mm (40”), which significantly reduces the cost of ambiguity of measurement and running costs. At the same time the disadvantages of nuclear devices are obviated.In an effort to reduce costs, a 400mm non-nuclear Density Meter was installed at the DuPont Maxville mine. A typical on-site accuracy can be shown to be ± 0.285%, whereby the cost of ambiguity, initial and running costs in the example above shows an annual improvement of $78,660, a reduction of over $880,000 per year.Even higher cost savings may be demonstrated with mass flow systems having gas entrainment compensation. Unlike nuclear and other inferential density meters, the signal quality of this non-nuclear Density Meter is totally unaffected by entrained gas found in mining slurries. This non-nuclear density meter is then ideally used with a vortex velocity domain sonic flow meter, and provides for the first time compensation in wet density or dry % solids, as well as wet or dry mass flow of mining slurries with entrained gas, resulting in enormous reductions in cost ambiguity."

Ausmelt Technology has a unique capability of removing the impurities, phosphorus and sulphur, from the feed materials to the process. Sulphur is removed to the gas phase almost completely because of the interactions of ore and coal in the reaction region at the top surface of the slag bath. Phosphorus is removed to the slag phase, with both basic and higher, controlled iron oxide levels in slag being achieved in the process. The significance of these features of the process relate to the production of pig iron with very low levels of these impurities for the further processing to steel, and to the treatment of high phosphorus and high sulphur raw materials. The marketability of pig iron and the raw materials are discussed in relation to this feature of Auslron.

When most people think of explosives transport they think of a hazardous operation. We all know that we aren’t allowed to transport explosives through tunnels and are discouraged from traveling through heavily populated areas. Popular opinion suggests that explosives transport is a very risky operation. The authors decided to look into this a little more thoroughly and found just the opposite to be true. While there have been some disastrous world-wide accidents involving the transport of industrial explosives, this is not the case in the U.S. Over the past 10 years, accidents related to the transport of explosives used in mining and construction have resulted in 5 major injuries, 11 minor injuries, and no fatalities. Explosives and ammonium nitrate (AN) transport outside the U.S. has not had such a good record; there have been 4 major explosives or AN transport accidents resulting in a total of more than 300 deaths. Most of these fatalities could have been prevented if the accident site had been evacuated once the explosive or AN cargo began burning. The safe history of explosives and AN transport in the U.S. is due to diligent efforts by government, labor, and industry. However, accidents will become more common and disastrous if we become complacent.

"Operational challenges associated with solvent extraction (SX) plants include the effective on-line management of solids introduced from a variety of process streams. Solids are carried over from leaching circuits due to incomplete solid–liquid separation, may be formed as a result of chemical precipitation within the SX circuits, or introduced from downstream electrowinning operations. Solids in SX settlers result in operational challenges that impact plant availability and reduce optimized name-plate design capacity operation. Most available SX crud and bottom solids removal systems are limited in their effectiveness to handle high total suspended solids in SX circuits. Operations are often forced to take settlers off-line for complete removal of contained solids. These cleaning operations are hazardous, high risk, labour-intensive and costly in terms of production down-time and organic extractant and diluent reagent losses. Production pressure results in operations being reluctant to take SX settler units off-line for solids clean-out, resulting in continued operation of the SX, at reduced levels of mass transfer performance. Crud ForxTM is an SX solids removal system, for the on-line removal of interfacial and bottom solids associated with hydrometallurgical SX processes. A case study conducted at Glencore’s Mutanda Mining copper and cobalt operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo demonstrated the effectiveness of the Crud Forx. Benefits identified were an overall improvement in SX fire risk reduction, SX occupational health and safety and an improvement in copper mass transfer. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical copper extraction and purification processes are often associated with ultra-fine solids distribution profiles throughout the process flowsheet (Virnig et al., 1999). The level and impact of the undesired deportment of solids to process streams varies from operation to operation, but the common denominator for all operations that employ solvent extraction (SX) as a copper upgrading and purification step is that, at some stage, they will have to manage solids (crud) within the SX circuit. Available crud removal systems in the industry have had limited success in continuous, effective interfacial crud and bottom solids removal from SX settlers. Most operations use basic removal methodologies which, at best, only result in delaying the requirement for taking the affected SX settler stages off-line for complete clean-out. This operational methodology results in production loss, increased SX organic extractant consumption and adds occupational health and safety risk to SX operations. The integrated Crud ForxTM/Crud FrogzTM SX solids management system assists operations in on-line SX solids management. The system has been proven to significantly reduce the requirement for off-line cleaning of settlers."

Optimizing final pit limits for stochastic models provides access to geologic and economic uncertainty in the pit optimization stages of a mining project. This paper presents an approach for optimizing final pit limits for a highly variable and geologically complex gold deposit. A heuristic pit optimizer is used to manage the effect of geological uncertainty in the resources within a pit shell with multiple uncertainty rated solutions. The uncertainty rated pit shells follow the meanvariance criterion to approximate the efficient frontier for final pit limits. Stochastic dominance rules are then used in a risk management framework to further eliminate sub-optimal solutions along the efficient frontier. This results in a smaller set of final pit shells that could be further analyzed for production scheduling. Additionally, the original solutions are analyzed for changes in the mining limits and two regions are targeted as potential regions for further exploration.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The formation of orogenic gold deposits is commonly a two-stage process. The first stage involves preconcentration of gold in a suitable source rock, such as carbonaceous black shales, felsic volcaniclastics or komatiitic volcanics. The second stage involves the release of gold (commonly with arsenic and/or tellurium) from the source rocks during metamorphism or magmatic intrusive events, accompanied by the replacement of source rock pyrite by pyrrhotite. Recent research suggests that synsedimentary gold trapped in the structure of diagenetic arsenian pyrite in reduced carbonaceous facies of continental margin sedimentary basins is an ideal source of gold for many orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits. The conversion of diagenetic arsenian pyrite to pyrrhotite during basin closure and greenschist facies metamorphism is the key process releasing gold and arsenic to the metamorphic fluid, with metal deposition in structural trap sites to form the deposits.CITATION:Large, R R, 2015. This paper describes a key element in the construction of a major project undertaken by Harbourfront Corporation in its efforts to rejuvenate the central Toronto waterfront. The Spadina Pier forms one of the two major structures of the $10 million marina complex. Completed in early 1986, the 150 metre(490 ft.) long by 43 metre(140 ft.) wide pier structure will contain a 320 car parking garage as well as providing the foundation of a 17-story residential tower and a two-story retail/commercial complex. However, the pier structure posed a considerable challenge to its developers due to the the many restrictions imposed on the site by the environmental authorities which ruled out the construction of dykes or the placing of other fill materials on the highly contaminated bottom sediments. In addition, access at the site was restricted by its proximity to the main harbour navigation channel and a grain elevator berth. The original design called for a cofferdam to form an integral part of the finished structure. However, the contractor chose to regard the cofferdam as a temporary structure and proposed to construct the pier in the dry by enclosing the 10,000 square metre(107,600 sf) site with a 450 metre(1480 ft.) long single wall steel sheet pile cofferdom 7.5 metres(25 ft.) from the final pier structure. This paper will describes the design and construction of the cofferdam. Prior to finalizing the pier design, a geotechnical investigation of the shale bedrock was undertaken as well as a small sheet pile test cell program to evaluate the feasibility of driving a Canadian manufactured cold-rolled sheet pile into the bedrock. Relying on the design parameters for the shale bedrock, Foundation designed the cofferdam utilizing a post-tensioned bipod bracing system to resist a 7 metre(23 ft.) hydrostatic head as well as the maximum wind and wave forces expected at the site. The bipod bracing system consists of diagonal H-pile raker piles and verticle pipe piles anchored to bedrock with post-tensioned anchors grouted into bedrock.
